fix(runner): preserve cleanup ownership across startup failures (#18658)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip controls which run owns an agent task. > - A plugin can continue accepted work after Core stops waiting. > - A late task-creation reply can therefore arrive after startup cancellation. > - Core must keep that work owned until its resource identity and cleanup outcome are known. > - This PR supplies the cleanup and recovery support before shared startup is enabled. > - The dependent activation PR can then reuse transport data within a bounded startup context. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18405. This is the independently mergeable prerequisite for that stacked activation PR. **What existing behavior does this improve?** Cleanup of explicitly recorded startup work that outlives its caller. **Current behavior** Caller timeout, worker exit, or failed cleanup-intent persistence can leave work without a complete recovery path. **Proposed behavior** Retain the cleanup obligation, use existing Stop and recovery queues, and release ownership only after the exact task and accepted work have stopped. Ordinary calls keep their existing startup payloads and budgets. This PR does not create startup contexts or advertise transport reuse. **Reason and benefit** Separate the failure-handling contract from activation so each can be reviewed on its own. This support PR has **no standalone TTFT speedup**. ## What Changed - Add the startup cleanup marker, exact ownership checks, verified completion, and acknowledgement helpers. - Connect recorded cleanup obligations to existing Stop, deadline reconciliation, restart recovery, and retry scheduling. - Retain typed cleanup responsibility when a database write fails. Keep the nonterminal run from being treated as ordinary completed cleanup. - Observe late acquisition results and save resource identities before retiring them. Retain real host writes and received results across worker exit or persistence failure. - Queue abandoned replacement tasks through the existing creation journal and cleanup machinery. Require the replacement's own Stop proof. - Accept an explicit startup context in the internal bridge for lifetime tracking. Automatic context creation, marker production, capability advertisement, transport capture, and executor activation belong to #18405. - Add PostgreSQL and worker IPC regressions, including legacy payload assertions. ## Verification Initial split source `8fb482d8be9e70101b0cfdd0830f41cf5b8e3cf4` had tree `95508bd1859e991670cad8afd4de8d2167009ac5`. **190 distinct targeted tests pass**, along with server typechecking. The selected checks cover real PostgreSQL cleanup/ownership, worker IPC, the bridge and creation journal, ordinary/distributed Stop, restart and deadline recovery, idle-sleep behavior, and the unchanged legacy warm-task suite. Independent recovery and worker reviews found no blocking issue. The first correction, `b6342d42042601b376da38dc8e1dba9ca80e9539`, fixes the replacement cleanup finding with the existing startup-cleanup marker, scoped to contextual abandoned task creations. The replacement was never prepared, so preparation-stop proof is not required. No dispatch is fabricated and no normal-startup query is added. The actual queue/sweep/driver/receipt/cancellation regression fails before the fix and passes after it: void, running or foreign-task status retains ownership; exact-task stopped status permits completion even when Release returns void. **64 affected targeted cases and server typechecking pass**. Independent review found no blocker. Current source is `f53af72af76f263096c3c2e788506e6faef9474f`. It fixes both recovery findings from the prior head's Apex 3/5: orphan recovery now preserves pending or completed-but-not-cancelled cleanup through its existing final-write fence, and exact late identities can reach verified cleanup after reconciliation or restart. The regression selection went from four failing assertions to six passing cases. Affected selections cover 217 distinct cases; the exact final six-case regression and server typecheck pass. Independent reviewers found no blocker in either fix. Current-head standard review is 5/5 and all CI checks pass (54 successes, three expected skips, plus Snyk). Apex also completed at **5/5** on this exact head, with zero unresolved threads. The requested independent availability audit is complete on this head. It found an activation-dependent operability gap: an acquisition response that is never received can leave an unknown creation identity with no supported task inspection/reconciliation path, while cleanup keeps the run owner reserved. This does not occur in ordinary lower-only calls. The contract and recovery policy need follow-up before activation; the external review scores do not resolve that availability tradeoff. The split preserves the accepted implementation at `21db7b3851` after its clean merge with frozen master `946735d03a55c1fb4cc5434d6bf1d87742daa9df`. The initial dependent activation PR restored exact aggregate tree `f68c6895f87c7b93ae03e6324d955d2659a99dce`. Both subsequent cleanup corrections are integrated into upper head `27978f294a02da3992585c7f4daa73cd8fcf99f8`; its current aggregate tree is `a0b66c33f5e22745f034f45d24d213f5c210cf16`. Lower-only payload tests cover the absence of capability advertisement and transport projection. Only targeted local tests and typechecking are used. Full regression coverage runs in GitHub CI. No deployment or ROM qualification is part of this change. The lower audit covered connected worker, creation-journal, Stop, restart, deadline and orphan-recovery paths. A new isolated real-PostgreSQL characterization reproduced the unknown-ID hold through actual recovery, cleanup verification and run-control cancellation. It models a lost acquisition response; it is not a live provider or complete IPC test. No source edits were made by the audit. The upper/composition audit remains required after its review cycle. ## Risks - Recording a replacement result now commits with the existing cleanup notification. This conditional replacement path adds transaction/notification responses; common retained startup is unchanged. - This adds cleanup and recovery state handling. A missing receipt or permanently inaccessible old backend can keep ownership held indefinitely. Temporary outages retry; an ordinary retry is not evidence that a deleted or replaced backend stopped. - A caller timeout does not undo work already accepted by a plugin. Unknown resource creation remains unresolved until its identity/outcome is established. Current task creation has no supported inspect-by-operation or operator reconciliation API for a permanently lost identity; repeated Stop alone cannot resolve it. - The support code understands records produced by the dependent activation PR. It does not enable the shared startup policy by itself. - Existing legacy callers must retain their behavior; context-only automatic replacement cleanup remains explicitly scoped. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact model ID and context window are not exposed in this session. Tool-assisted implementation, targeted testing, and independent subagent review. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used, with available version and capability details - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this is the requested split of existing work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue with the required fields - [x] I have not referenced internal issues or private links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket ID - [x] Targeted local tests pass on this source - [x] I have added or updated relevant tests - [x] I have updated relevant documentation - [x] I have documented the risks - [x] All current-head GitHub CI gates are green - [x] Current-head standard Greptile and Apex are 5/5 with no unresolved findings - [x] I will address all review comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(recovery): preserve unfinished remote exports before Retry (#18678)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agent work and preserves each task's saved files. > - A completed native result can still need workspace export. > - Remote workspaces now use a different saved descriptor from legacy copyback. > - The execution hold checked only the legacy descriptor. > - Task Retry could admit another run before the original export finished. > - A later failure could then supersede the original recovery record. > - This change keeps unfinished remote exports fenced and permits explicit historical file recovery. > - Recovery keeps human review and newer execution authority intact. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A native run completed successfully, but its remote workspace export failed. The recovery action used `native_workspace_sync_out_retry_exhausted`. Task Retry created a second task run while the original files still needed preservation. The newer failure then superseded the original action. A board file-recovery request could queue that cancelled record, but the worker excluded it from discovery. **Expected behavior** Keep Retry behind the unfinished export. Save the exact source and finalize the existing accepted result once. Preserve pending human review. An explicit request for a superseded source must save its files without applying an old result over newer work. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Save an accepted successful native result with a prepared `remoteWorkspace` descriptor. 2. Fail its final export and retain its exact sandbox lease. 3. Select Task Retry before preservation completes. 4. Observe another task run before the original workspace is saved. 5. Supersede the original action and request file recovery for its exact source. Observe queued work that the worker does not select. **Paperclip version** Observed at `1f8f2e195f4897cd1c237bdc068de95780ab0c3c`. The regression is present on current master before this patch. **Deployment mode** Authenticated hosted instance with native Paperclip Runner and remote sandbox workspaces. Related: #18403 introduced the remote workspace path. #18644 reduces export scratch disk use. #17916 covers a separate legacy warm-copyback policy case. This change repairs remote export admission and explicit historical preservation. ## What Changed - Include prepared remote descriptors in the existing native export hold. - Retain remote source identity in the blocker and continuation read projections. - Let the existing worker select a cancelled export-repair record only after an explicit board file-recovery request. Keep the current action and workspace binding unchanged. - Add real PostgreSQL, HTTP, filesystem and Git regressions. Update execution semantics and recovery maps. ## Verification - Red before the admission fix: HTTP Retry creates two task runs instead of one. - Red before the historical-source fix: the explicit recovery stays scheduled and saves no snapshot. - All 588 focused tests pass across the workspace recovery, recovery source, explicit continuation and native export retry suites. The three new integration cases verify duplicate request identity, original result finalization, restored bytes and Git HEAD, pending human review, current-writer exclusion, and preservation without older-result commitment over newer work. - `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm build`, map validation and `git diff --check` pass. - Full hosted CI passes on `c598718379fa939ec539e8e91a15a94d90321b59`, including all server, workspace, serialized, Runner and browser lanes ([run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41529739604)). Greptile reviewed that commit at 5/5 with no findings; there are no unresolved review threads. Paperclip Review also published a complete 5/5 assessment for that exact commit with zero findings. Its check conclusion is advisory/neutral, titled `5/5`. The first attempt lacked a structured assessment; one normal completion request recovered the saved analysis and published the validated assessment. - The local `pnpm test:run` passed all six chat partitions, then was stopped during the general server group after equivalent full CI completed. Its partial log is retained; it is not reported as a completed local full-suite pass. - The test provider boundary uses real temporary files and the production archive path. It simulates provider resume/stop calls. The deployed fix and original hosted task recovery remain unverified until merge and rollout. - The older local Node 24.11.0 runtime failed to load the installed tsx worker. Node 26.4.0 passed the isolated worker check. Required repository checks use an isolated Node 24.22.2 runtime. The earlier failure logs remain recorded. ## Risks - Recognizing another unfinished export can keep previously admitted work waiting. This is intentional until persistence is verified. - Explicit historical recovery can resume the exact stopped sandbox to read files. It retains source, allocation, ownership, writer and bounded-attempt checks. It starts no provider turn. - A newer run still prevents commitment of an older accepted result. This change does not infer that a cancelled run had no external effects. - No schema, credential, deployment or fleet configuration changes. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The runtime does not expose the exact model ID or context-window size. Reasoning, repository inspection, tool use and code execution assisted this change. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

test(runner): cover document guidance for file-only objectives (#18669)
## Thinking Path > - Completion guidance can link a saved task document even when the user requested only a file. > - The validator loads document publication proof when the objective requests a document or the completion report cites one. > - The success tests added in #18661 all requested both a document and a CSV. > - Those tests therefore could not detect loss of the cited-document branch. > - This test requests only a CSV and resubmits the actual guidance link with a registered file receipt. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Addresses the [coverage warning on #18661](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18661#discussion_r4447457009). **What happened?** The earlier success cases exercised the document-requested condition. The independently cited-document condition lacked regression coverage. **Expected behavior:** A file-only objective can cite a verified saved-document guidance link alongside the required registered file. **Steps to reproduce:** Publish a task document, register a CSV, request only the CSV, obtain the saved-document href from completion guidance, and submit both pieces of evidence. Removing only the cited-document lookup must make this case fail. **Paperclip version or commit:** Current master after #18661. **Deployment mode:** Local source tests with real PostgreSQL and native publication receipts; the remote CSV reader is controlled. No deployment is part of this follow-up. ## What Changed - Allow the existing registered-file test helper to accept a file-only objective. - Add one success case using real document publication, file registration, and the server-generated guidance href. - Keep production source and the existing negative cases unchanged. ## Verification - All 27 native completion feedback tests pass on current production code. - The new case fails when only `|| citesTaskDocument` is temporarily removed from publication lookup. The production file is restored exactly afterward. This demonstrates a coverage gap; it does not establish a new production defect. - Server typecheck and `git diff --check` pass. - Full repository CI passed, including both required E2E and verify aggregate gates. Greptile scored the current head 5/5 with no unresolved findings. The separate optional Paperclip review is queued and has supplied no finding. The preceding production PR records its separate local full-suite timeout and isolated passing retry; this follow-up uses the focused local suite and full CI rather than repeating that long local run. ## Risks Low risk: only the existing test file and its fixture helper change. The new case depends on real document/file publication contracts, including the CSV receipt requirement. ## Model Used OpenAI `gpt-6.1-sol` through Codex, with reasoning, code editing, shell execution, and automated tests. The context-window size is not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): recognize verified task document evidence (#18661)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and keeps their results attached to tasks. > - Native tools return links to saved task documents. > - Completion feedback asks agents to include those links. > - The file-delivery validator treated every such relative link as a workspace path. > - A valid document and CSV result could therefore fail completion when it cited the supplied document link. > - This change derives document links from the same verified publication projection for guidance and validation. > - Requested files still need their own verified delivery evidence. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** The native document tool and completion feedback produce a link such as `/EX/issues/EX-1#document-output`. When a task also requests a downloadable CSV, citing that link causes completion to reject it as a workspace-only file. This occurs even when the document is published and the file has a valid current-run delivery receipt. **Expected behavior** Accept a server-derived document link only when it names the current company/task and a currently attached revision with a matching native publication receipt. Keep the separate requested-file requirement and all foreign, stale, missing, and workspace-file guards. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Save a task document through the native `write_document` tool. 2. Publish a CSV through `register_deliverable`. 3. Ask completion feedback for the final-response guidance. 4. Cite its returned document link alongside the file receipt in the next completion report. 5. The old validator rejects the valid document link as a workspace-only file. **Paperclip version or commit** Current source checkout. The regression exercises the real native document producer and completion validator. **Deployment mode** Local source verification on macOS arm64 with Node 24.22.1, pinned pnpm 9.15.4, locked dependencies, temporary PostgreSQL, and a controlled remote file-reader boundary. No live provider or hosted deployment is included. ## What Changed - Derive the canonical document href in the existing company/task/current-revision publication query. - Use that same verified href in completion guidance and reference validation. - Keep file registration and hash/size receipt requirements separate from document evidence. - Cover evidence, artifact, and criterion references; foreign companies/tasks; bogus keys; local paths; and lost current-revision publication proof. - Exercise actual native document writes and CSV registration, including attachment download query and fragment links. - Update the execution contract and the document feature/access maps. ## Verification - Red before the production edit: native completion generated a real saved-document link, then rejected the same link alongside a valid published file. The failure was the workspace-only-file guard. - Green: 210 tests across native completion feedback, explicit output validation, and the existing native file-handoff suite pass. These use real PostgreSQL and native tool receipts; the remote file reader is controlled. - A saved document link alone still fails the explicit CSV requirement. A document whose current revision lacks its publication receipt is rejected. Foreign task/company links, missing keys, malformed links, and workspace paths remain rejected. - Full workspace typecheck, server typecheck, and production build pass. - `node scripts/check-maps.mjs`, `node scripts/check-module-boundaries.mjs`, and `git diff --check` pass. Map checks establish structure only. - Full `pnpm test:run` is running separately. There is no full-suite verdict yet. CI and review are pending. - Hosted acceptance and any recovery of existing tasks remain separate steps. This PR does not change final-response recovery or scheduling. ## Risks - An overly broad URL exception could admit foreign or unpublished output. The validator accepts only exact hrefs from the authenticated publication projection. - Document evidence could hide a missing requested file. A separate regression keeps that delivery gate effective. - The shared projection adds current task/company joins. Existing document feedback and publication tests cover those consumers. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(native): preserve warm continuity and deferred review replies (#18631)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their saved work. > - Product E2E tests must check saved personal files across separate turns. > - The server records file collection in the durable `instruction_save` run-log event. > - The warm test read optional terminal result metadata instead and rejected a recorded successful save. > - This pull request reads the complete event stream for the current run and uses its latest save receipt. > - The prompt now specifies the exact nine bytes required by the temporary-file transfer count. > - Human review actions select the actual interaction card, which can share its interaction ID with a navigation button. > - A later real three-turn run exposed a missing reply after workspace finalization moved to its durable recovery owner. > - Reply recovery handled completed tasks but omitted ordinary tasks that awaited review. > - This pull request also publishes their recorded final reply once while preserving the pending review. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** The [retained live continuity attempt](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41477302876/job/125420001074) saved the correct memory file and unchanged 8 MiB binary. Its durable run log contained a successful `instruction_save` receipt. The oracle read `resultJson.instructionSave`, which was absent, and failed before turn two. The temporary file also had a trailing LF. Its prompt allowed that result, while the byte-count check required nine bytes. **Expected behavior** The oracle must use the documented authoritative save event. A missing receipt, a later failed save, incorrect transfer counts, or another run's events must fail. The prompt must specify the bytes that its independent check requires. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Run `daytona-warm-continuity.runner-codex.daytona.warm-three-turn` with the configured protected credentials and immutable image. 2. Complete a native turn whose terminal result has no `instructionSave` field. 3. Compare the oracle output with the same run's successful `instruction_save` event. A subsequent [three-turn attempt](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41495337334/job/125451304553) passed every personal-file assertion and reused the same warm process. Its first final reply was recorded as a completed agent-message event but was absent from comments. The log shows `native_workspace_finalization_busy`; the durable recovery path excluded `needs_review` replies. The final message matcher correctly failed. This failure remains recorded. The observed application revision was `aab87ce70744660a4a21c77278b0ede267c04720`. Related work: #14695 and #18494. The retained failed result keeps its original grade and definition. ## What Changed - Read all run-event pages through the existing bounded collector. - Require events to belong to the requested run and select the latest `instruction_save` event. - Retain strict byte counts and reject missing, failed, pending or superseded receipts. - Specify nine ASCII bytes and no trailing newline for the temporary file. - Scope human review actions to the interaction card and its exact interaction ID. - Advance the warm suite definition to version 5 and document its evidence source. - Recover recorded final replies for ordinary native tasks with an accepted `needs_review` result and terminal state. - Preserve pending reviews, existing reply selection, company/turn/digest checks and external governed-response authorization. - Update the task feature and agent access maps. ## Verification - Real PostgreSQL regression: deferred review reply discovery failed before the production repair (expected one candidate; found zero). The final-message event and pending review were present. - Recovery cases cover one publication, no repeated provider run, unchanged review, and rejection of absent/wrong-turn final messages, bad digest and suppressed comments. - Red: seven new boundary regressions failed against the old receipt lookup. - Green: 169 focused oracle, event pagination and catalog checks passed. Product E2E typecheck passed after rebuilding local package declarations. - Retained-evidence replay confirms that the new lookup finds the real successful save event. The original attempt remains failed because its temporary file included an LF. - Recursive typecheck passed before the final recovery change; server typecheck passed afterward. The recovery and control-plane suites passed all 112 tests. Full build and map checks passed. - The broad local test run reached one unrelated 30-second timeout in `attention-retention-work.test.ts` (maintained-review/confirmation batching). The same unchanged case then passed on one targeted retry (39.9 seconds including module load). The original failure remains retained. The broad run also reported one unchanged workspace-conflict case, which passed on its targeted retry (14.85 seconds including module load). Both original failures remain retained. The redundant broad local run was stopped after current-head CI completed all required gates: 55 successful checks and 3 selection skips. No all-green local broad-run claim is made. - The separate artifact-transfer cell already passed on the recorded application revision: independent source and delivered bytes matched at 407,485 bytes, with a completed task, succeeded native run and cleared execution locks. This does not establish a three-turn continuity pass. - [Real native three-turn acceptance](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41499102994/job/125465795210) **passed** at `3b207a42943e9eeb371d4f2d5623de72093eb6d5`, suite definition 5. Turn one exercised `committed_task_response_recovered`. All three completed final replies were persisted once and in order. All three strict personal-file receipts passed. The unchanged 8 MiB binary survived; later transfers copied only 36 and 54 bytes. The lease was created, resumed, and resumed with the same runner PID/start time, runner instance, native session and provider session. Final task was `done`, all three runs succeeded, and checkout/execution locks were null. - The aggregate startup summary has no separate provider-process PID proof. The raw run records independently prove the stable runner process and provider session stated above. This single native cell does not qualify the legacy cell or a full provider matrix. - The passing campaign reused the signed immutable runner image. It required no disk expansion. Earlier campaign image builds used the recorded temporary 120 GiB mitigation; default 60 GiB build capacity remains unqualified. All scoped completed probes were removed and independently returned 404; org CPU/disk usage returned to zero. This does not resolve unknown historical resources under a different credential identity. - Current-head Greptile is 5/5; review-thread pagination is complete with zero threads. All 55 current-head checks are successful; 3 selection checks are skipped. The paid campaign, result enforcement and report publication all completed successfully. ## Risks - Publishing a reply must not approve the work. Recovery only copies the accepted turn’s completed final message. It preserves the pending review and does not start an executor. - Conversation and external governed-response paths retain their existing separate authorization. The latest save event can record failure after an earlier success. The oracle rejects that case. Event pagination, missing receipts and cross-run evidence also fail closed. The exact temporary-file byte count remains required. The review selector still requires the intended interaction ID and enabled action on its actual card. The production change is limited to ordinary internal-task reply recovery. It still requires an accepted result, a matching successful terminal disposition, the completed final message, and existing publication authority. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with shell and code tools. The exact deployment variant and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs: #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agent work through shared server and database services. > - High query volume can spend main-thread time on SQL construction and result decoding. > - The existing bounded response capture counts rows and bytes, but it cannot name the operation that executed a query. > - Bundled callers can be missing, and measuring every parsed JSON value adds work to the diagnostic. > - This pull request carries a semantic execution owner into each measured query and bounds response sizing. > - Operators can rank query volume by owner before choosing a performance fix. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #17504, #17522, #17537, #17564. **What existing behavior does this improve?** The opt-in `PAPERCLIP_DB_RESPONSE_CAPTURE_WINDOW` diagnostic. **Subsystem affected** Database diagnostics and existing server execution boundaries. **Current behavior** The capture groups by table, operation, and builder caller. It cannot distinguish execution owners that reuse a prepared query. Bundled deployments need source maps for caller locations. The capture visits every returned value and serializes parsed JSON again to estimate its size. **Proposed behavior** Version 2 captures use fixed semantic owners for HTTP requests, delivery queues, execution phases, and budget work. They count completed calls, returned rows, errors, and completion wall time. They sample successful results 1, 17, 33, and so on, with fixed cell and string/byte limits. Complex values remain explicitly unmeasured. Semantic ownership works without source maps. **Reason and benefit** A short census can identify which operations issue the most queries or return the most rows. It preserves each query's execution owner through pooled connections, concurrent operations, and prepared-query reuse. It reduces diagnostic work without claiming per-query CPU attribution. **Breaking changes** Opt-in capture output moves from `entry.v1`/`summary.v1` to `entry.v2`/`summary.v2`. Sampled primitive byte lower bounds replace all-result byte estimates. Consumers must use the new fields and must not extrapolate them into a total. There is no database migration or application API change. ## What Changed - Added `withDatabaseOperation(owner, action)` to the DB package. The server owns semantic labels. Queries retain execution ownership in their completion closure. - Added fixed owners at existing HTTP, delivery, budget, and execution timing boundaries. Delivery work replaces the context of the producer that woke it. - Added complete call/row/error counters and completion wall durations within the existing bounded window. Durations include waits and are not CPU measurements. - Sampled and bounded primitive-value sizing. Complex and oversized values remain unmeasured. Known owners skip repeated stack extraction. - Preserved the deadline, group limit, paced output, query outcomes, and existing coverage exclusions. Updated the operator documentation. - Added real PostgreSQL owner-isolation and prepared-query tests, server scope tests, and plain bundled-runtime proof. - Moved projection-test and benchmark full-response sizing into an explicit test helper. Existing payload-size thresholds remain unchanged; these synthetic checks do not use the production sampler. ## Verification - Final-commit DB capture suites: 43 tests passed in 13.86 seconds against the actual PostgreSQL driver, including concurrent owners, prepared reuse, transaction failure, a dedicated client, sampling, and a query crossing the deadline. DB typecheck passed. - Server attribution and existing delivery/execution/budget suites: 53 tests passed. Final concurrent HTTP GET/JSON POST scope refinement: 5 tests passed. - Runtime bundle suite: 8 existing tests passed. The new no-source-map owner test passed after its fixture was corrected to use a driver thenable. An ordinary native Promise can bypass an overridden `.then`; the real PostgreSQL tests separately cover driver integration. - Observer-only experiment: three alternating pairs per case on Node 24.22.2, macOS arm64, 3,000 calls per run after warm-up. For an already-materialized synthetic JSON result, median capture CPU fell from 82.37 to 1.87 microseconds/call. For a 100-row primitive result, it fell from 8.10 to 4.40 microseconds/call. Every result retained identity and all calls were counted. The new diagnostic intentionally measures less byte data; these are observer costs, not database latency or a hosted application speedup. Disabled-case timings were below one microsecond/call and too small for a performance conclusion. - Final lifecycle regression: 28 unit tests and DB typecheck passed. Closing the last capture disables and replaces owner storage; overlapping captures retain it. - Final-commit full recursive typecheck passed in 38.38 seconds and full build passed in 40.81 seconds. The build stamp matches `83ed4ba9cebd68d48929c46f15ab32d5c0b9687b`. Focused server attribution tests also passed 5/5 before the test-helper-only migration. Full test acceptance will use the repository's parallel CI gates; the unsharded local command takes hours. - Verification failures retained: initial sandbox runs could not open local IPC/PostgreSQL listeners; permitted reruns exercised the real services. One old test expected JSON serialization and was updated to assert explicit unmeasured complex values. The first bundle fixture used the wrong promise boundary, as described above. A retained-callback regression also demonstrated that disabling and reusing the same AsyncLocalStorage instance could resurrect an old owner; replacing the instance after the last capture closes fixes that case. - The first CI run found older projection tests consuming the previous full-response fields. Those consumers now use the full-response test helper, preserving their byte thresholds. The two complete affected route suites plus helper tests passed 115/115 in 73.08 seconds. A temporary full-row query negative control then failed the unchanged 2,048-byte limit at 5,000,812 bytes and was restored; five other service suites passed 34/34 and the affected chat cases passed 3/3. All three previously failing CI shards passed on the corrected head. A local skill-list benchmark smoke check completed 255 captured queries with no in-flight queries or overflow; this was integration verification under concurrent test load, not a timing benchmark. - Two final-head runner jobs lost communication with GitHub before reporting a test result. One targeted retry of those jobs and their dependent aggregate passed. All 53 final-head checks passed, with 3 intentional skips; previously passing suites were preserved. - Hosted capture remains pending until the reviewed revision is deployed and a bounded window is explicitly configured. Reproduce the focused checks with Node 24 and the repository pnpm version: ```sh pnpm exec vitest run packages/db/src/response-capture.test.ts packages/db/src/response-capture-postgres.test.ts pnpm --dir server exec vitest run --config vitest.config.ts src/__tests__/database-operation-attribution.test.ts scripts/bundle-runtime.test.mjs pnpm -r typecheck pnpm build ``` ## Risks - Owner context is active while a valid future capture window is armed, up to 30 minutes before accounting starts. No-window and expired calls take the direct path. Diagnostics still add bounded work while enabled. - A nearest nested owner is reported. Broad `http.request` and unattributed groups remain visible; this does not identify every service callsite or SQL shape. - The existing census excludes tagged/raw explicit-execute/streaming paths and internal protocol commands. Its counts are not PostgreSQL transaction totals. - Completion wall time includes queue/database/network/scheduling waits. Concurrent durations overlap. Sampled bytes exclude complex values, large strings, and values beyond the sizing limits. - Activation is startup-only. Operators must choose the window after artifact preparation, allow rollout/warm-up time, and remove the expired setting afterward. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with code execution, repository inspection, and parallel agents. The exact deployment model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): handle blank assigned-tool schema references (#18637)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Native agents discover assigned app tools through a governed
gateway.
> - OpenCode receives search and call tools instead of the full app
catalog.
> - A blank optional schema reference selected schema lookup instead of
search.
> - Agents received an unknown-tool error and could abandon valid app
access.
> - This pull request treats blank references as search and explains
invalid schema requests.
> - Agents can find their assigned tools while the gateway keeps its
access checks.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
**What happened?**
An agent called `paperclip_search_assigned_tools` with
`{"query":"github","schemaTool":""}`. The server tried to find a tool
with an empty name. It returned `assigned_mcp_tool_unknown` instead of
search results. The agent then reported that its GitHub tools were
missing.
**Expected behavior**
A blank optional schema reference must permit normal tool discovery. A
bad schema reference must explain how to search again.
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Assign an app tool to a native agent that uses on-demand discovery.
2. Search with `{"query":"github","schemaTool":""}`.
3. Observe the unknown-tool error instead of the assigned tool.

fix(runner): keep requests responsive during retired backup cleanup (#18619)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Remote native runs keep durable harness backups for continuation and
recovery.
> - Publishing a new backup retires earlier backup directories in the
server process.
> - The synchronous permission walk and recursive removal block
unrelated requests.
> - This pull request makes that cleanup asynchronous and keeps
publication waiting for completion.
> - The benefit is continued request progress while large retired
backups are removed.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
**What happened?**
Publishing a backup with many small files blocks the Node event loop
during directory permission repair and removal. A local comparison with
20,000 retired files reproduced 1.37–1.95 second event-loop stalls. This
is a pause candidate. A short hosted profile has not established it as
the dominant source of sustained CPU use.
**Expected behavior**
Unrelated requests can progress during cleanup. Publication still waits
for complete removal, preserves rollback on a failed lease stamp, and
leaves live files and symlink targets unchanged.
**Steps to reproduce**
Run the benchmark in `doc/performance/native-backup-publication.md`. It
compiles the actual publication service from a pinned baseline and the
working tree, prepares immutable retired backups, and sends foreground
HTTP probes from a separate process.
**Paperclip version or commit**
Measured baseline: `774ddc72713d6aa7cb516691c71f1fc23bcfa5ff`. The
measured treatment source is committed in this branch. Current head:
`0a69cf2d43c2f9fcf032d96c1dceb56163bf21ba`. The runtime patch is
unchanged from the measured source; later commits only strengthen the
test and benchmark evidence paths.
**Deployment mode**
Local compiled service on macOS arm64 with Node v24.22.2. No hosted
rollout has occurred.
Related work: #18380 changed retention scheduling. #13676 included the
existing immutable-backup cleanup behavior. Neither change makes
publication cleanup asynchronous. The GitHub duplicate search also found
#11929, which concerns database dumps rather than native harness
backups. No matching open event-loop cleanup issue was found.
## What Changed
- Use asynchronous filesystem operations for retired-backup cleanup.
Visit directories serially and skip unnecessary metadata calls for file
entries.
- Await cleanup before publication proceeds, during rollback, after
successful rotation, and in executor finalization.
- Exercise immutable current and previous backups in the publication
test. Preserve the existing symlink-isolation and rollback tests. Add a
real separate-process HTTP probe that must complete while publication is
still active.
- Add a repeatable service benchmark and document its fixture, metrics,
and acceptance limits.
## Verification
Draft status: focused correctness tests, the local comparison, and
repository typecheck pass. The complete local test gate is incomplete.
The build passed. Complete CI, hosted acceptance, and final-head review
remain pending.
- Final focused Vitest run: 2 files, 4 tests passed in 649 ms with the
normal server configuration. The regression warms a separate Node
client, waits for its HTTP request during the stamp callback, queues the
response for the next event-loop turn, and then allows final
retired-tree removal to start. The async treatment serves that response
before publication completes. The original synchronous cleanup fails the
same final regression in a separate source fixture. That expected
control failure is retained.
- Syntax and `git diff --check` passed.
- `pnpm -r typecheck` passed on head `332c57b88c` in 152.18 seconds,
including the native Runner build. Validation uses Node v24.22.2 and the
repository-pinned pnpm v9.15.4 with isolated dependencies.
- `pnpm test:run` was intentionally stopped after 1,390.24 seconds (exit
143). All six chat shards passed, covering all 1,817 parameterized cases
across their exact partitions. The general server phase was advancing
but incomplete. The repository timing manifest estimates another roughly
two hours for the serial remainder, so validation moved to final-head
parallel CI. This is not a full local test pass. The command began on
`332c57b88c`; later changes only refine the regression and benchmark,
and the final regression has its own focused pass.
- Benchmark failure/metadata checks pass in a tiny isolated Git fixture:
an injected worker exit 17 is reported in 0.44 seconds without hanging,
and the result includes a staged source change when the unstaged diff is
empty.
- `pnpm build` passed in 41.80 seconds on `9f7e4e669b`. The final commit
only releases a pending test probe on failure; runtime and build sources
are unchanged. An injected client exit verifies that final test failure
path exits promptly in 0.97 seconds instead of hanging.
- Three alternating baseline/treatment pairs used fresh fixtures with
100 directories × 100 files in each of two retired backups. Each
publication removed 20,000 files. A separate process sent HTTP probes at
fixed 5 ms intervals, including overdue arrivals.
- Every run verified the replacement manifest, complete cleanup, and
unchanged symlink-target contents and mode. All 2,395 HTTP requests
completed without errors. The largest measured generator delay was 8.8
ms.
| Metric | Baseline median (range), ms | Treatment median (range), ms |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| Foreground request p95 | 1,357.7 (1,287.4–2,014.0) | 1.8 (1.7–25.9) |
| Maximum event-loop delay | 1,439.7 (1,371.5–1,954.5) | 19.9
(17.4–40.7) |
| Publication completion | 1,429.1 (1,360.2–1,952.9) | 1,439.5
(897.9–1,649.6) |
| Process CPU during publication | 1,194.1 (1,041.8–1,225.5) | 2,423.1
(1,995.7–2,514.7) |
The treatment served 180–329 requests while publication was active. The
baseline served zero during that interval. Process CPU includes
foreground work that the baseline cannot serve until cleanup completes.
The result supports responsiveness, with a CPU tradeoff. It does not
establish lower total CPU or a hosted latency gain.
Reproduce with Node v24.22.2:
```sh
pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/services/native-runtime/native-harness-backup-cleanup.test.ts src/services/native-runtime/native-harness-backup-publication.test.ts
node server/scripts/benchmark-native-backup-publication.mjs --baseline-ref
feat(runner): define bounded startup lifetime contracts (#18490)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Native sessions and plugin workers have separate startup lifetimes. > - A caller timeout does not prove that a worker or an accepted host write has stopped. > - Shared startup code needs an exact deadline and an actual settlement contract. > - This PR adds those contracts and tests them before any production caller uses them. > - The dependent integration in #18405 will use the contracts with verified cleanup. > - This split lets reviewers assess the lifetime rules separately from runtime activation. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18405. This PR extracts the foundation from that change. The integration will depend on this PR. **Problem or motivation** A bounded startup must distinguish the caller's wait from actual worker completion. A late worker reply or an accepted host request can outlive the original RPC promise. A shorter timeout must not discard that responsibility or authorize a replacement run. **Proposed solution** Add one Core execution context, optional Runner startup deadlines, and worker settlement and retirement APIs. Test the contracts with real child-process IPC. Keep production context creation, transport projection, capability negotiation, durable cleanup, and Stop/recovery integration in #18405. **Alternatives considered** One combined PR mixed the lifetime contract with its activation and cleanup policy. Activating a shorter deadline before the complete transport and cleanup path is unsafe. Splitting only the SDK declarations would not provide a useful behavioral review boundary. **Roadmap alignment** This supports the existing plugin, sandbox execution, and bounded recovery capabilities. It adds no new product workflow, endpoint, migration, provider or runtime dependency. ## What Changed - Add `NativeExecutionContext`. It retains the selected input, binds one transport target, rejects work after cancellation or expiry, and tracks actual worker settlement. Expiry alone does not complete pending work. - Add worker startup groups. A caller timeout retains the group's responsibility. Retirement revokes obsolete invocation scopes, waits for accepted host handlers, and retires only the verified group's bookkeeping. Each cleanup wait is bounded; an unfinished handler remains pending for a later retry. - Add an optional Runner startup signal and absolute deadline for session open and retained attachment. Clean up abort listeners after synchronous failures. Existing callers keep their default timeout path. - Expose the remaining confirmed controller-lease budget without a new query or renewal timer. - Add optional SDK context and preparation-retirement fields. No production bridge sends or advertises them in this slice. - Keep the required lease mock update with the new `remainingMs()` contract so this foundation typechecks independently. Production activation files, including the native executor and environment task bridge, match the current master base. No production caller constructs `NativeExecutionContext` or passes the new Runner startup option. This PR adds no durable cleanup producer and claims **no standalone TTFT improvement**. The dependent integration must enable the context, transport and verified cleanup together. ## Verification Initial split verification on `8ebc8a2f9c6c02e90f920356138b3742a4067b28`, based on `9a3f395737e7a92faf99971459979061d423531a`: - From `server`: `../node_modules/.bin/vitest run src/services/native-runtime/native-execution-context.test.ts src/services/native-runtime/native-execution-context-worker.test.ts src/services/native-runtime/native-execution-lease.test.ts` — **17 passed**. Includes real child IPC, caller timeout with late reply, worker death, accepted host-handler draining, obsolete cleanup invocation rejection, unrelated work preservation, context scope, expiry, and confirmed lease budget. - From `packages/paperclip-runner`: `../../node_modules/.bin/vitest run src/native-session-runtime.test.ts` — **188 passed**. Includes existing callers without the new option and new synchronous-failure/expired-deadline cases for fresh and retained sessions. - Direct TypeScript checks for `packages/plugins/sdk/tsconfig.json` and `packages/paperclip-runner/tsconfig.json` — passed. Built only their shared/eval TypeScript prerequisites. - From `server`: `../node_modules/.bin/tsc --noEmit` — passed. - Checked the partition against the reviewed combined candidate. The twelve selected files match exactly. The thirteenth file carries only the required test-mock update. The production executor, bridge and target wiring remain equal to the base. - `git diff --check`, added-line secret/private-data scan, and added-code-comment scan — passed. No generated files or run artifacts are committed. - The first old-base split passed its focused tests but failed server typechecking because the unchanged executor test mock lacked `remainingMs()`. The original failure is retained. Moving that one-line mock update into this foundation resolved the split dependency; the final current-master checks above pass. - Full local CI suites, Rust builds, deployments and provider calls were not run, as requested. GitHub CI will provide full regression coverage. Current-head GitHub CI, standard review and Apex are complete; exact acceptance is recorded below. Review follow-up `d7635f4d280dab757a3666703737bcda955c9361` fixes three reproduced lifetime edge cases. A retiring startup group rejects new calls and shares one retirement promise; failed bounded retirement remains retryable. Transport identity uses a fixed field tuple rather than object-property order. Finishing a context rejects pending lookup waits without aborting an already-started backend or pretending the worker completed. All three new regressions failed before the fix; the updated foundation selection passes **20 tests**, including actual IPC and failed-retirement retry. Server typechecking and added-line checks pass. These replace the earlier 17-case selection, rather than adding 20 unique cases to it. The original failures and passing reruns are retained. Apex follow-up `cb8860bab5ab9d6357a352e11f276be0d0cdb26d` keeps removed worker handles reachable while they own startup calls, accepted host handlers or retirement work. Drain/retirement includes active and retained handles; completion callbacks remove settled handles. Stop and replacement remove only the exact handle they observed. This adds no database/network operation, polling loop or generic shutdown wait. The SDK, Runner, context and transport bridge are unchanged. Seven additional IPC regressions failed on the prior manager and pass after the fix, covering removal/replacement, Stop-all, host-handler settlement, bounded retirement failure/retry, pruning, and replacement ownership. The updated foundation selection passes **27 tests**, with server typechecking passing; these supersede the earlier 20-case selection. A separate real-PostgreSQL/child-IPC characterization uses the integration's actual SDK host, storage registry and run-control path with the exact corrected manager bytes. Before the fix, cleanup released run ownership while an accepted host write was blocked, then the late write restored obsolete metadata. After the fix, ownership and cleanup remain pending until the write completes; cleanup then removes the stale metadata before releasing ownership. The original failure, corrected result and source snapshots are preserved. Final head `cb8860bab5ab9d6357a352e11f276be0d0cdb26d` passes GitHub CI (53 successful checks, 2 expected skips, Snyk success), standard Greptile **5/5** and fresh Apex **5/5**. All review threads are resolved and the PR is conflict-free. ## Risks The shared Runner helper now observes synchronous operation failures through its asynchronous cleanup path. The affected runtime file's 188 tests pass, but full regression coverage still depends on CI. The new lifetime APIs require honest settlement signals. A future caller must not treat a deadline, worker crash or Stop intent as verified retirement. Production activation remains dependent on the complete integration and its cleanup tests in #18405. This foundation introduces no shorter production startup budget or new cleanup policy by itself. The context's transport projection is process-local. It must not be persisted or used as a general authorization cache. No production caller supplies it in this PR. There is no database migration, new dependency, or deployment requirement for merging this foundation. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, assisted with repository inspection, the split, tests and command execution. The exact serving model ID and context-window size were not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs: #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal issue identifier - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes — this description documents the inactive contracts; operational activation documentation remains with #18405 - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green on `cb8860bab5` - [x] Current-head standard Greptile and Apex are 5/5 with no unresolved findings - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
test: overlap long recovery and maintenance waits (#18544)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - CI verifies recovery, execution authority, and background work before changes merge. > - Diff selection saves work, but a selected file still runs its cases in sequence. > - The three longest files in a recent full master run each took over eight minutes. > - Many of these cases must observe real lease expiry or idle periods. > - This pull request gives independent cases separate fixtures so those periods can overlap. > - The benefit is a shorter test path with the same assertions and observation windows. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18464. The latest measured successful master [Cloud readiness run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41300933157) spent 581 seconds in issue recovery, 569 seconds in native restart recovery, and 512 seconds in maintenance server routes. File-level selection cannot divide those long serial files. Shortening their lease or idle windows would weaken the regressions they protect. ## What Changed - Split issue recovery into four files with separate database and worker fixtures. Keep all 18 cases. - Split native restart coverage into recovery, lease renewal, preparation, checkpoint cost, and disk-loss files. Keep all original 79 cases, including the existing container-qualified cases. The master update also retains its newly added recovery cases. - Close each native case's database clients after pending failure reports drain. The shortened file must not rely on idle timeouts to stay below PostgreSQL's connection cap. - Run the native Runner lane with two isolated fork workers. Register every new file in the lane and verify that the partition still includes every suite. - Give each maintenance case an owned database. Run at most two cases together with test-local assertion contexts. Keep both real 90-second quiet windows and all 17 cases. - Preserve serial execution when any explicit shared `PAPERCLIP_*_TEST_DATABASE_URL` is present. An admin URL that creates a separate database per fixture can run concurrently. - Refresh shard weights from the protected master run. Mark the initial split-file weights as conservative estimates until master measures them. - Anchor the attention-retention fake clock to PostgreSQL time. Its fixed clock started trailing real database timestamps after 12:00 UTC on November 1, causing an archive-deadline test to time out. Keep its deadline assertions and timeout unchanged. - Document the fixture and concurrency rules. Leave runner authorization and workflows unchanged. ## Verification - Final head `c9a4ff11b3ba81277341294c7721b34fb8705ede`: [full PR CI passed](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41477848686), including typecheck, build, all test shards, E2E, and the final verification gate. The rollup has 55 successful checks, one neutral review check, four expected skips, and no pending or failed checks. Greptile reviewed this exact head at 5/5 with no actionable findings. - November 2 master update: merge commit `c9a4ff11b3ba81277341294c7721b34fb8705ede` resolves the native recovery import conflict while retaining the new busy-row and remote continuity cases from master. All 38 test-runner checks and the three new busy-row cases passed locally. - Retention verification after the master update: the first local full run passed 52 cases and timed out at 15 seconds in the paged-backlog case. That case passed in isolation. The unchanged master suite passed all 53 cases (82.95 seconds), and a full PR rerun also passed all 53 (76.65 seconds). The initial timeout cause remains unproven; no timeout or assertion was weakened. - Previously verified head `fd288a8e8c88df54dcdca7b7e42366b019182782`: [full PR CI passed](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41312625439). There are 55 successful checks, one neutral review check, four expected skips, and no pending or failed checks. Greptile reviewed this head at 5/5 with no actionable findings. - Issue recovery: 18/18 passed before and after the split on the same local machine and PostgreSQL fixture path. Wall time changed from **630.6 seconds to 319.7 seconds** (49% less). All case titles match. - Maintenance also passed all 17 cases on AWS: structured file cost dropped from **511.8 to 282.6 seconds** across the linked master run and the first PR run. These are different CI runs, so the matched local comparison below is the stronger isolated measurement. - Maintenance: 17/17 passed before and after with the restored pinned dependencies. Wall time changed from **488.1 seconds to 317.2 seconds** (35% less). All 120 assertion lines remain. Both real 90-second windows also passed a final targeted run. - Native restart: 71 passed and eight existing container-only skips before and after the split. Wall time changed from **632.1 seconds to 346.8 seconds** (45% less). All 79 cases and 254 assertion lines remain. - `pnpm -r typecheck`: passed. - `pnpm build`: passed. - Extra TypeScript checking of the moved recovery and maintenance tests passed. The standard server config excludes `src/__tests__`. A separate check of attention-retention fixtures reports existing type errors; the unchanged baseline has identical diagnostics, with none introduced by the clock fix. - `node --test scripts/__tests__/run-vitest-stable-shard.test.mjs scripts/ci/test-selection*.test.mjs`: 61 passed. - `pnpm test:run`: stopped in the second chat partition: 335 passed and four failed (two GitHub retry-state assertions and two Teams timeouts), after 339 passed in the first partition. These chat tests are unchanged. All four pass in a focused run (19.1 seconds). The full-suite ordering/load cause remains unproven. All three CI chat jobs passed. The previously failing cases passed there in 1.3, 1.3, 2.4, and 2.2 seconds; see [the chat job log](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41309691650/job/124857580714). The attention-retention timeout repeated in CI and in an isolated local run. Its fake clock was fixed at November 1 noon, which had fallen behind real PostgreSQL timestamps. Anchoring it to the database clock passes all 53 cases; the failed case now takes 425 ms. - The native CI lane passed all 162 runnable cases with eight existing skips after client cleanup: **650.7 seconds on the earlier master run to 391.0 seconds on this PR**. - CI found native connection exhaustion after the long waits moved out of the main file. The same failure reproduced locally at a 100-connection cap. Per-case client cleanup fixes the shortened file at that cap, and all five native files now pass together at that cap (71 passed, eight existing skips). - Early attempts exposed a missed fixture reference and a missed reporting setup hook during extraction; both were restored. The first CI policy run also required moving the new native fixture under test helpers; that boundary check now passes locally. A separate auxiliary command picked up the host pnpm version and removed dependencies. The original maintenance baseline reproduced the same missing-package failures, so that failed attempt is excluded from timing comparisons. A later unchanged-baseline run passed all 17 cases. The pinned install was restored before the passing maintenance run. The audit also covered heartbeat process recovery, deferred receipts, chat, workspace recovery, attention, and connection management. Their shared fake clocks/provider mocks or existing partitioning need different changes. The 16,400-row attention case and the large checkpoint stream remain intact because their size protects real limits. ## Risks - Two isolated processes use more memory and database connections than one. Concurrency is capped at two. Shared database overrides force serial execution. - Moving setup into helpers can change test lifecycle order. The split suites keep the same case assertions and use independent process state; focused runs and the full CI suite check the move. - Split-file weights are estimates based on case timings from the linked run plus repeated setup cost. The next protected-master refresh replaces them. Weights never permit tests to be skipped. - Local timing varies with host load. CI measurements after merge are needed to establish the overall PR wall-time improvement. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6, with reasoning, repository inspection, tool use, and code execution. The exact backend revision and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass (changed suites and focused reruns; the full local-run caveat is recorded above) - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(runner): restore Codex auth before source recovery (#18612)
Restore disposable Codex authentication and safe provider configuration before cold source recovery. Preserve source receipts and conversation state until reconciliation, and rebuild assigned tools from the admitted launch binding. Validate remote launch destinations, clear stale authentication when no selected credential exists, and atomically publish SSH file transfers without following retained links. Red/green recovery regressions, a real two-turn Codex/MCP probe, and all current PR checks pass. Co-Authored-By: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(runner): install verified API artifacts in execution workspaces (#18494)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Native agents use authorized API tools to read saved results. > - Copying a large response as model-generated text can lose bytes. > - The execution workspace needs an exact copy of the saved artifact. > - This change copies the authorized bytes without shell API credentials. > - The runtime verifies size and SHA-256 before it reports success. > - A live evaluation checks capture origin, installation and delivered bytes. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A native agent lost one byte while copying a 24576-byte API text page. Existing capture and paging controls passed. The runtime had no verified saved-artifact-to-workspace copy tool. A separate historical screening refusal does not establish capture corruption. **Expected behavior** An authorized native run can install the complete saved artifact. The stored and installed bytes must match in size and SHA-256. A conflicting file must remain unchanged. A lost publication receipt must not cause an unsafe repeated write. **Steps to reproduce** Run `server/src/services/native-runtime/artifact-transfer.integration.test.ts` on baseline `c46b8f35add9255fc71be294d27f5a7865bcb47f`. Its capability assertion fails because `download_artifact` is absent. Apply this PR and run the same regression with the filesystem and API controls. It verifies 388131 synthetic bytes through the authority and installation boundary. Refs #18429. Related #17393, #17086 and #17285 cover paging, transfer foundations and remote output reads. This PR adds the inbound installation contract. ## What Changed - Add `download_artifact` for supported standard-mode native runs, with a 10 MiB limit. - Reuse current company, task, run, asset-content and responsible-user access checks. Check authority again before publication. - Bind installation to the current execution lease. Stage through confined Linux descriptors and publish with an atomic create-only link. Keep API credentials out of execution commands. - Verify bytes at storage and execution boundaries. Reject unsafe paths, symlinks, different existing files, truncation and corruption. Reconcile an unknown publication through verification only; an identical explicit retry remains safe. - Add API documentation, access-map entries and content-free audit records. - Preserve only the pinned Daytona SDK numeric HTTP status when failed creation cleanup is unconfirmed. Keep provider exception messages and headers private. - Keep only the finished runner binary and portable provider pack in their builder layers. Remove Rust targets/downloads and the Node install workspace/store before export. Report tree sizes. - Add one explicit Codex/Daytona Product E2E cell. Its independent oracle checks the server capture audit, redacted tool receipts, stored source, delivered attachment and browser link after reload. Uploaded substitutes and one-byte loss fail. ## Verification - Merge update at `6766b46553cab5b9787ade87a002eccaf50e68fc`: merge current master and preserve both explicit suites in the catalog. Focused catalog, image and oracle checks: 122 pass. Filesystem and authority integration: 20 pass. Maps, module boundaries and whitespace checks pass. New-head CI and Greptile are running. Full local build and typecheck remain unavailable because cargo is absent. - Behavioral red/green: the absent-tool regression failed before implementation and passed afterward. The initial missing-package attempt is recorded as setup failure. - Linux filesystem and real PostgreSQL/authority integration: 19 filesystem tests and 1 authority test pass. Existing API authority, capture and paging controls: 70 pass, 2 skipped. Provider transport in these integration controls is simulated. - Qualification calibration: 118 focused tests pass. The real persisted-event redaction case and a byte-identical uploaded substitute each failed before their oracle repair. The unchanged controls then passed. Harness typecheck passes. - Full recursive typecheck and build pass locally on the integrated production source at `086f7a2901`. Later commits change only qualification tests and documentation. - Structural map/module checks and whitespace checks pass. - Full local `pnpm test:run` was attempted by the implementation worker and stopped under its 8 GiB memory limit, with no full-suite verdict. Current-head CI must supply the full test result. - The complete local Product E2E support suite has 13 failures. The unchanged pre-qualification baseline reproduces all 13: host PostgreSQL semaphore capacity, stale timeout/profile/workflow inventory expectations, and expired fixed-date allowance fixtures. This is not a full local suite pass. - Earlier CI at `086f7a2901` failed a browser test during cleanup cancellation with a database lock timeout. It remains recorded. All browser shards passed on both later fully checked heads. - Two qualification campaigns were canceled during setup before provider execution while correcting the oracle. They provide no live product verdict. - Previous-head CI at `28fa001457f59df1c300c016dc569049e72d0061`: 53 checks pass, 3 intentional selection skips; no failed or pending checks. - Real image/export regression: campaign 41272351780 compiled the Linux runner and passed root/unprivileged CLI and transport checks, then failed BuildKit export with `no space left on device` (exit 102, filesystem 99.99%). No provider cell ran. Removing the Rust build trees alone was insufficient: campaign 41273604815 also failed during provider-pack export with exit 102. Commit `5bbb549c54` also consolidates dependency installation and pack construction so the disposable workspace/store can be removed in the same layer. All 122 image/oracle/catalog checks pass. Image and remote-pack publication then passed in campaign 41275196741 after cleanup changes plus a scoped 60-to-120 GiB expansion of only its delete-on-termination builder disk. The VM terminated and the expanded volume was deleted. This does not establish that cleanup alone makes the default 60 GiB builder sufficient. - The Daytona admission probe then failed before agent creation, with unconfirmed provider cleanup. The queued continuity case was canceled because it shares this prerequisite. No artifact-transfer or continuity success is claimed. - Status-diagnostic regression: the original generic wrapper failed the HTTP-status assertion. After the repair, the full plugin suite passes 501 tests, with 7 skips; its standalone TypeScript check passes. Controls reject invalid status values, avoid accessors, preserve the original create status and exclude credential canaries. - Previous-head Greptile: 5/5; its summary names `28fa001457f59df1c300c016dc569049e72d0061`. All review threads are resolved. - Live artifact transfer and three-turn warm continuity: NOT VERIFIED. The diagnostic case in https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41277598289 confirmed Daytona HTTP 401 before agent creation. The configured `DAYTONA_API_KEY` in the existing `runner-e2e-paid` environment needs verification or refresh. The queued continuity control was not run after its shared admission prerequisite failed. No further provider attempt is planned until the credential changes. Unconfirmed provider cleanup remains recorded. ## Risks - Source-provenance changes can repeat the provider dependency install. The combined build layer trades install-cache granularity for lower retained disk use. - Linux descriptor semantics and Node are required on the execution host. Unsupported providers and restricted runtime profiles fail closed. - Storage reads buffer at most 10 MiB. A provider outage can leave a reserved staging file. Partial bytes never become the destination. - A lost publication receipt can leave a complete file with an unknown result. Recovery verifies the existing file without installation. Conflicts are never overwritten. - Artifact contents remain untrusted. The copy does not bypass screening or authorize downstream execution. - Live qualification uses the governed Codex API profile. It does not establish every model, subscription profile, platform or historical failure cause. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 in Codex assisted with diagnosis, code, tests and qualification. The desktop runtime does not expose a more specific model deployment ID or context-window size. The model used reasoning, source inspection, tools and code execution. The native implementation agent is configured with OpenAI `gpt-6.1-sol`. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: devinfoley <139239+devinfoley@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(server): resume suspended sessions after controller replacement (#18554)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - A web server replacement must preserve a completed conversation as well as active execution. > - A warm remote Runner can suspend before the replacement admits another turn. > - The replacement restores its controller checkpoint from PostgreSQL, but lacks the Runner suspension receipt. > - It therefore tries to adopt a live process and rejects the safely suspended source. > - This change restores the verified receipt and preserves retained launch files while the old authority is reconciled. > - Later turns can keep the same provider conversation after the old web server filesystem is deleted. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18552, #18543, #18366. **What happened?** The real rolling-deployment journey passed both HTTP handoffs, with 765 reads and 78 verified saves. The first three agent turns kept their native and provider sessions. After the second replacement, the fourth continuation failed with `remote_warm_session_not_idle`. The remote Runner was suspended with an empty outbox and no pending terminal. A focused regression reproduced that exact failure. After restoring its suspension receipt, the same test exposed a stale launch-file read during source recovery. **Expected behavior** A replacement can resume the same provider conversation from a settled suspended Runner. It must validate the physical sandbox and all persisted identity fields. A live source must still pass the existing adoption checks. **Steps to reproduce** Enable the Linux Runner fixture for `native-runner-restart-recovery.integration.test.ts`. Run the `diskless-warm-suspended` cases. The fixture completes and gracefully suspends each source, deletes the controller projections, and admits a later turn from another process. It does not write a synthetic suspension receipt. ## What Changed - Reuse the existing per-turn suspended-receipt reader before warm admission chooses live adoption or suspended recovery. - Keep the receipt read retryable when a failed remote read leaves only the controller projection. - Leave every non-suspended warm state to the existing live-adoption checks. A preliminary backpressure observation cannot reject admission before that owner inspects the current Runner state. - Preserve current sandbox binding, settled-outbox, exact-identity, local-evidence and admission checks. - Pass the structured launch specification to remote asset preparation. Source reconciliation keeps the old authority's retained launch files; a current-authority launch still stages its current files. - Add two Linux Runner/PostgreSQL regressions for two controller-cache deletions and three turns on one provider thread, including an interrupted receipt read. - Update the deployment qualification record, including the failed live evidence and the successful staging database-idle observation. ## Verification - Before the fix, the focused regression fails with the exact live `remote_warm_session_not_idle` error. - Both new regressions pass with real PostgreSQL and Linux Runner. The provider is deterministic; this is not a live model qualification. - The first receipt-only fix failed on the deleted controller skills cache. The completed fix passes that same scenario without recreating fixture launch assets. - All 1,067 surrounding launch supervision, warm recovery, launch-asset and controller recovery tests pass. The exact `cc23019691` server build passes. All ten Linux continuity cases pass, including live adoption, graceful suspension, per-turn resume, changed configuration and failed-read retry. Each case checks provider-thread identity and exact turn counts. The live Codex/Daytona journey passes on the same clean source and exact build: 518 reads, 53 saves and 53 verified saves with zero probe failures; both predecessor homes deleted; the active execution completes once; all four turns preserve the provider conversation and native receipts; saved files and the final command output are independently checked. No automatic retries. Child credential and object-storage bucket cleanup pass. Browser reconnection remains a separate hosted acceptance check. - The review refinement has a failing-before regression: only the preliminary read reports transient backpressure; the subsequent adoption reads the real Runner state. It and both suspension cases pass on the final source (three cases), with server typecheck. The existing idle check remains unchanged. An initial retry hit a fixture port left by the intentional pre-fix failure; a fresh container resolved that infrastructure error. - Independent cleanup verification found two archived setup sandboxes left by the live harness. Both were deleted and confirmed absent. The failed automatic-cleanup check remains recorded. - No claim of the ten-deploy Railway campaign or production canary yet. ## Risks - A cold warm-session admission can now make one bounded remote state read when local lifecycle evidence is absent. Its failure stops admission and remains retryable. - This path cannot replace contradictory local evidence, transfer authority, or treat a suspended process as a live one. - Source recovery must keep the previous authority's launch files until reconciliation completes. The launch identity selects that behavior; ordinary launches still prepare current assets. - No schema migration or public API change. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 Codex, with reasoning, repository editing, shell execution and integration-test tools. The exact runtime model variant and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge CI qualification note: first final-head run `41322376054` passed the native/runtime and remaining suites but failed the unrelated `automatic_message_on_reactivation` browser fixture at its pre-reactivation deferred-queue count (0 rather than 1). The unchanged test passed locally against isolated PostgreSQL (1 test, 43.6 s); inspection found an asynchronous company-pause/fixture-seeding timing window. Original CI logs and local evidence are retained. The single failed-job retry passed; all final-head CI gates are green. Both reviews are 5/5 and no review threads remain unresolved. The first local embedded-Postgres launch failed before tests during cluster initialization; the isolated external-Postgres test passed, and its disposable database was removed after correcting the private launcher cleanup call. --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(server): preserve sessions and defer busy overlap recovery (#18552)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - A web server replacement must preserve remote execution and later task continuation. > - The active-run handoff now survives deletion of the departing server home. > - The next admission still compared disposable instruction and skill paths as configuration. > - A native receipt could also settle without the old adapter returning its terminal metadata. > - A replacement can also collide with a run row locked by the serving controller. > - This change preserves durable session identity and terminal evidence, and defers locked recovery work so overlap can reach readiness. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18543, #18366, #9977, #18118. **What happened?** A real Codex/Daytona journey replaced both control-plane servers and deleted their homes. Reads, saves, saved files and active execution passed. A later useful answer used a new provider session. All four run records lacked the native terminal contract. The whole qualification therefore failed. A later attempt also exposed startup failure: the replacement waited for a row lock held by the serving controller and aborted on its one-second lock timeout. **Expected behavior** An unchanged managed instruction entry and immutable skill version retain the session across server cache relocation. Actual content and configuration changes still reset it. A committed native receipt retains its terminal contract even when the originating adapter never returns. A busy recovery row defers through the existing scheduler while the replacement reaches readiness. **Steps to reproduce** Run the `rolling-web-deployment.runner-codex.daytona.recover-controller` Product E2E cell with separate controller homes and shared PostgreSQL/S3. The focused regressions reproduce the failures without a model call. ## What Changed - Read the managed instruction entry digest from the company-scoped durable file head. Do not restore or read the cache for this check. - Omit disposable instruction paths only when that durable authority exists. Fingerprint selected immutable skill versions in both runtime skill inputs. - Preserve the existing local and external instruction path checks, and unversioned skill identity. - Publish the accepted native terminal contract in the same transaction as the canonical result receipt. - Skip locked recovery rows and schedule the same run for retry. Avoid an audit write that would block on the same row. No ownership is transferred while busy. - Keep replacement readiness independent of an in-progress skill selection; migration and cache eviction still require exact pins. Missing durable skill versions still refuse startup. - Project only the instruction digest in SQL instead of loading the entire agent-file manifest per admission. - Add real PostgreSQL lock contention tests for the issue, run and coordinator, including the heartbeat startup caller and later claim. - Limit native test teardown to its owned database on a shared test host. The old behavior also fails on clean master. - Add cache-loss, scope, changed-content, changed-version and finalization regressions. Update the deployment qualification record. ## Verification - Both focused regressions failed before the source changes. - All 249 tests pass across `heartbeat-workspace-session`, `agent-file-durability`, and `paperclip-control-plane-port`. - Server typecheck and exact-revision build pass. - Assembled admission ran 59 passing cases but failed during native-suite teardown. The teardown failure reproduced on clean master. All 16 native resumption cases and teardown pass after the database-scope fix. - All three row-lock regressions fail with the pre-fix lock timeout and pass with deferred recovery. The full recovery suite passes 74 cases, including the startup caller; eight Docker-specific cases were not enabled. - The real attempt at `d2165dec5d` failed when B aborted on the run lock. Its credential and bucket were removed; all three provider sandboxes were independently confirmed absent. The next real attempt at `aae8a53d01` failed a different readiness gate while a run was preparing skill pins. That race now has a failing-before regression; all 33 readiness, durable-file and managed-skill tests pass after the fix. Its owned resources are cleaned. The `a15a12651c` live attempt passed both web replacements: 765 reads, 78 saves and 78 verified saves with zero HTTP probe failures. The first three turns preserved the provider session and native terminal contract. The fourth continuation failed because a safely suspended remote Runner was treated as live/idle; that distinct recovery gap is being handled in a follow-up. All three owned sandboxes were independently confirmed absent. No claim of full Railway qualification yet. ## Risks - The new fingerprint shape may reset a session once when upgrading from older fingerprint metadata. It is stable across subsequent cache replacements. - A versioned skill is identified by its immutable selected version; materialization and admission still enforce availability. Unversioned skills retain their existing path boundary. - A native terminal describes the accepted execution result. Workspace and issue settlement remain separate authorities. - This does not yet prove the ten-deploy staging campaign, natural database autosuspension or the production canary. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 Codex, with reasoning, repository editing, shell execution and live integration-test tools. The exact runtime model variant and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(server): complete volume-free controller admission and recovery (#18543)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Its volume-free web server must admit remote warm execution without
depending on a local disk.
> - Fresh run rows retain the initial legacy label during workspace
preparation.
> - The native runtime selector commits the execution mode later.
> - The earlier guard rejected valid remote runs before that selection.
> - This PR checks storage during preparation and the resolved lifecycle
during runtime selection.
> - Agent-file recovery also has to reconstruct disposable cache paths
from the retained remote directory.
> - The deployment test removes the complete predecessor home, including
immutable caches, to enforce that contract.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
Refs #18518, #18529, #18533.
**What happened?**
A real Codex/Daytona deployment test failed during setup because the
volume-free workspace guard checked the initial run label. After fixing
admission, controller retirement first failed on an immutable skill
cache. Removing that cache exposed a production recovery failure: B
rejected the saved agent-directory path from A, even though the remote
execution identity was unchanged. The next live attempt recovered that
directory and transferred the same runner, but adoption then tried to
recreate provider launch assets from the deleted controller home.
**Expected behavior**
Allow remote workspace preparation before native selection. Reject
actual legacy and per-turn execution at the runtime boundary. Delete the
entire stopped predecessor home, including immutable caches, without
following links to shared dependencies. B must reconstruct its local
agent-file projection from the exact registered remote lease while
preserving the save baseline and unsaved remote edits. Reattaching an
already-running provider must not prepare a new launch or require the
old launch files. The full backend must recover the admitted
instructions from the matching durable run checkpoint.
**Steps to reproduce**
Run the explicit
`rolling-web-deployment.runner-codex.daytona.recover-controller` Product
E2E cell with a complete server/UI build, disposable PostgreSQL/S3, and
an owned Daytona fixture. The new boundary regressions also reproduce
the premature guard and missing runtime rejection without a model call.
**Paperclip version or commit**
The failures were observed on
`247552fe0719dcc92f7b42c50b658be6f624986d`. This branch is based on
`e122478368`.
## What Changed
- Validate Runner and remote workspace authority before runtime
selection without trusting the initial run label.
- Reject resolved legacy execution and local-source fallback, preserving
the native warm-policy check before admission.
- Rebind remote agent-file caches on ephemeral controllers and retrieve
their validated contents without uploading over the retained execution.
Preserve pending saves when the remote collector is unavailable.
- Restore over-quota remote directories without applying save quotas to
run admission; ordinary saves still enforce quotas.
- Skip provider launch asset materialization when adopting an existing
Runner. A real-process regression deletes the old skill/instruction
sources before reattachment.
- Recover admitted system instructions through Runner-owned checkpoint
validation for the same run, session and context digest. Fresh launches
still compose current instructions.
- Make the attention-retention test advance past its database-assigned
deadline, fixing a clean-master clock mismatch.
- Serialize remote collection and cleanup across controllers with an
operation-scoped Postgres advisory lock; fence stale cache-path updates.
- Keep synthetic deployment probe tasks in a separate disposable company
so they cannot block the business completion oracle.
- Share the launcher's directory cleanup with rolling retirement. Reject
a symlink root and skip linked descendants.
- Test admission with real PostgreSQL transactions and cleanup with real
read-only directories and external symlinks.
- Update developer documentation and the canonical qualification record.
Broader deployment acceptance remains in progress.
## Verification
- `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed.
- All 156 workspace preparation, runtime selection and ephemeral
contract tests passed. Two new regressions failed before the source fix.
- Seven focused Product E2E cleanup/replacement tests and `pnpm
test:e2e:runner:typecheck` passed.
- `pnpm test:run` stopped at an unrelated 15-second chat integration
timeout after 338 passes. That exact test passed in isolation without
increasing its timeout. The later full-suite shards did not run.
- `pnpm test:e2e:runner:unit` reported 5,898 passes and 13 failures.
Clean master reproduced 11 failures in unchanged onboarding
expectations, operating receipts, Pi catalog assertions, workflow
bootstrap counts and embedded PostgreSQL startup. The other two workflow
assertions were fixed by the intervening master commit. These failures
are retained, not counted as passes.
- All 122 workspace-preparation tests pass after the reviewed
host-fallback fix. The first broader attempt exposed a test environment
leak; restoring the ephemeral flag between cases resolved it.
- Agent-directory and instruction regressions passed 179 tests. Five
focused cache-loss cases pass: different home, same path on an empty
filesystem, foreign lease, concurrent controller, and missing collector.
- The live fixture at `a18f6b85a3` gracefully stopped A and deleted its
entire home, then failed the 420-second remote reattachment deadline on
the saved local agent-directory path. That failure is retained; exact
owned sandbox cleanup was independently confirmed. The next live attempt
at `e14ca5f3e9` restored the cache and transferred the same runner, but
failed while rematerializing launch assets from A. Both failures are
retained and their owned sandboxes confirmed absent. No active-overlap,
ten-deploy, or production-canary acceptance is claimed.
- All 71 related Runner adoption/recovery cases pass, including the new
removed-context regression (failed before the source fix).
- The revised full agent-directory suite passed 110 cases and failed
three cleanup timing cases. All 20 cleanup/cache-loss cases then passed
in isolation with unchanged timeouts, including over-quota recovery.
- Server and Runner TypeScript checks pass after the latest corrections;
the live retry remains pending.
- The live test at `67714af9ff` adopted the same remote execution after
A was deleted, then failed while the full backend read the retired
instruction bundle. All owned sandboxes were independently confirmed
absent. Its regression now passes with actual backend recovery and no
new thread or turn. All 59 backend factory tests and focused checkpoint
identity tests pass. Runner and server TypeScript checks pass; the exact
committed server build passes. A fresh paid-model retry followed.
- The attention-retention CI timeout reproduced on clean master. The
deadline correction passes all 53 tests in that file with unchanged
timeouts.
- The real `cd690de4d3` run transferred the same runner/session after
deleting A, completed, and completed the next revision. During handoff,
372 reads and 38 saves had zero failures; all 38 saves were verified.
The full attempt was interrupted because the probe's open task
contaminated the business company oracle. This remains incomplete
evidence. The scope regression fails before the fixture fix, then
passes; all nine deployment support tests and E2E typecheck pass. All
three owned sandboxes were confirmed absent and temporary
credentials/storage were cleaned up. A clean corrected attempt is
running.
## Risks
- The runtime guard must still reject legacy and per-turn execution
before dispatch. Tests cover these refusals and a valid resolved warm
policy.
- Directory permission changes apply only during cleanup of stopped,
test-owned homes. Traversal does not follow symlinks. This changes no
production cache permissions.
- Cache reconstruction must not change remote execution authority or
rebase the original save baseline. Tests verify foreign-lease rejection,
preserved receipts, and absence of local-to-remote upload.
- Postgres locking is scoped to active remote file work and adds no idle
polling; local/durable-server locking remains unchanged.
- No schema or public API changes. External conversation exemptions
remain unchanged.
## Model Used
OpenAI GPT-6 Codex, with reasoning, repository editing, shell execution
and live integration-test tools. The exact runtime model variant and
context-window size are not exposed in this session.
Qualify rolling web deployments and preserve Stop through handoff (#18526)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The web server owns request handling and remote execution coordination. > - Deployment must start a ready replacement while the old server still serves. > - An outage test does not prove that two live servers can overlap safely. > - This pull request adds a separate Product E2E cell for that boundary. > - The existing run, file, recovery, and retained-session checks still apply. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18518. The runtime prerequisite is merged; this PR qualifies its ephemeral server and deployment contracts. ## What Changed - Add the explicit `rolling-web-deployment` Codex Daytona workflow. - Start independent A/B/C homes and compiled builds behind a test ingress. - Wait for readiness before routing, then drain and delete the old home. - Observe active authority before handoff and use the existing read-only recovery oracle. - Require ordinary reads and saves to succeed throughout replacement. Read back every accepted save exactly once. - Preserve the five-minute outage suites and their existing validators. - Add a model-free supervisor smoke and an unready replacement control. - Require graceful exit before deleting an old home; forced cleanup cannot satisfy the oracle. - Preserve a durable Stop through lease release/expiry until the recovered execution owner acknowledges it. Permit only fenced reattachment of the original execution for Stop cleanup; submit no new turn. - Exclude events saved by A during shutdown from evidence of B making progress. ## Verification - E2E TypeScript check passed. - Affected harness checks: 143 passed. Catalog, fixture and report checks: 120 passed. - Actual supervisor smoke passed two replacements: 436 reads, 45 saves, zero request failures, and confirmed owned resource cleanup. - B became ready in 18.7 seconds; C became ready in 109.2 seconds. A prior C timeout remains failed evidence. - Fresh browser proof: 11 checks passed, 246 reads, 50 acknowledged saves, zero failures, 1,058ms reconnect, both old homes deleted and cleanup confirmed. - Stop lease-gap regression: three PostgreSQL delivery tests passed with a simulated provider edge. Current server TypeScript build/vendoring passed. - Full harness: 5,814 passed, 17 failed, four skipped. Two shutdown races passed the focused file; two report timeouts passed an isolated 42-test rerun. Onboarding/workflow-security/Pi/date-expired fixtures are unchanged on inspected master; the host embedded PostgreSQL fixture remains a setup limitation. This is not a green full local suite. - CI at `172509b8be` passed all gates. Greptile is 5/5 with every review thread resolved. The earlier access-service race failure passed its isolated regression and the subsequent full CI. - Final review corrections: six focused executor cases, three PostgreSQL command-delivery cases, 19 harness cases and server/E2E typechecks passed. - Three live attempts failed before agent creation: two harness setup gaps were fixed, then provider authentication failed. The saved OpenAI key returns 401; a refresh is pending. The Daytona probe reported cleanup uncertain, and no sandbox with that attempt label was found through the authenticated staging manager. No live model execution is claimed. - Live Runner overlap, released-container qualification and hosted deployment proof remain pending. Merging this opt-in qualification lane does not claim those results. ## Risks - The source lane shares workspace dependencies and does not establish container packaging correctness. - The live workflow needs an explicitly owned S3 bucket, PostgreSQL, pinned remote image and provider credentials. - Qualification cleanup stops all owned processes after failure. A failed replacement must not be reported as a pass. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6. Tool use, code execution and repository review. The runtime does not expose a more specific model ID or context-window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
feat(server): support volume-free web server handoff (#18518)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Its web server also owns controller admission and user commands. > - A rolling deployment starts a replacement before the old server exits. > - Shared database state alone does not preserve local agent files, browser chunks, or in-process commands. > - This pull request adds an opt-in ephemeral server contract and a local overlap test. > - The benefit is a web server that can relinquish traffic and local files without losing acknowledged work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18403, #18327, #18335, #18341. **Current behavior** The control-plane web server still has local agent-file authority and local command targets. A new container can miss saved bytes or send a command to the wrong process. An existing browser tab also needs chunks from its original build. **Proposed behavior** Eligible servers share only PostgreSQL, object storage and stable secrets. A replacement waits for readiness. The old server drains admitted requests, keeps owner commands available through handoff, and releases controller leases. Explicit maintenance adopts existing files before the volume is removed. **Reason and benefit** This is the application prerequisite for rolling app-only deployments. Schema migrations and permanent multi-replica operation are outside this change. ## What Changed - Store agent-file manifests in PostgreSQL and immutable bytes in S3. Treat local roots as disposable projections. Preserve existing permission checks and edit conflicts. - Add an explicit migration, eligibility and object-retention command to the production runtime bundle. - Add `/api/ready`, admitted-request drain, browser restart signaling and retained immutable UI chunks. - Carry transaction-aware work hints across controllers during handoff and active execution. Keep listeners closed when idle. - Deliver durable Stop and runtime responses to the execution owner. Recheck request lifecycle and access before response dispatch. - Reject local-only configuration in ephemeral mode. Keep the feature disabled for existing installations by default. - Add an isolated PostgreSQL/S3/proxy/browser deployment harness with independent server homes and retained failure evidence. ## Verification - All CI checks pass on `ce17b95019d3cf1cabd357d19b6d37f96782cc5c`: workspace typecheck, build, Runner checks, server/general tests and browser shards. Greptile reviewed the runtime changes at 5/5 with all findings resolved; the final commit updates maps and the plan. - Local targeted checks passed: coordinator 27; Stop/recovery 33; PostgreSQL command delivery 6; route/workspace regressions 8; bootstrap Stop 1; restart recovery 75. PostgreSQL command tests simulate the provider edge. - Local browser proof passed 91 reads and 19 saves; reconnect took 1,013ms. The tab opened Audit from S3 after deletion of A's whole home/build. This uses compiled workspace code and local-trusted auth, not released containers or live agents. - Local workspace typecheck/build passed; current server and runtime bundle passed. The earlier broad local suite was stopped after three hours and is not a passing receipt. Its retained failures and isolated reruns are documented in the plan. - Stacked #18526 adds stricter graceful-exit proof, an unready replacement control, live Runner qualification and a Stop handoff correction. Hosted enablement remains gated on those results and Cloud #1096. No hosted stack has been enabled. ## Risks - Apply migration 0422 before enabling the feature. Existing data must pass each owner's migration and eligibility checks. Do not discard a volume based on a single migration page. - Durable manifests remain authoritative after the opt-in is disabled. Rolling back to a binary that ignores them is unsupported. - Cold directory restoration and complete shutdown timing still need qualification before enabling a hosted stack. - Retained UI assets must cover the supported browser and rollback window. Cleanup is explicit; no new idle maintenance polling is introduced. - This change does not claim production zero downtime or authorize a fleet-wide enablement. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact serving model ID and context-window limit are not exposed in this session. Used reasoning, code editing, shell execution and browser automation. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
Preserve native workspace files after lifecycle Stop (#18517)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Agent termination must stop execution and preserve unfinished workspace files. > - A native run can acknowledge a lifecycle Stop, then finish without an accepted result. > - The file preservation worker required a board actor even when the exact native Stop receipt was valid. > - This left a prepared remote workspace allocated without a file recovery action. > - This pull request admits the exact audited receipt for file preservation only. > - The existing recovery service can then save the files and stop the same allocation without another agent turn. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A cancelled native run can have a terminal, unowned coordinator and a prepared remote workspace. Agent lifecycle cancellation records a valid run-only Stop receipt without a board user. The preservation worker rejects that receipt because it uses the board Stop predicate. The source lease remains active. A resolved execution watchdog does not supply the missing file recovery action. **Steps to reproduce** Seed a cancelled native run with a terminal-failure coordinator, no result or owner, an acknowledged and audited run-only Stop, and a prepared remote workspace. Omit board attribution. Start the registered cancellation preservation worker. Before this change, it records no workspace recovery marker. **Expected behavior** Record file recovery for the exact bound allocation. Keep the cancelled result, accounting, task state and watchdog history. Use the normal recovery service to stop, save and clean up that allocation without another provider turn. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced on source `1e8e32290c657227857aeda2620a73db52bab4f2` with real local PostgreSQL 17. The observed deployment uses a sandbox provider and remote workspace storage. Related current workspace work: #18514. Public PR and issue searches found no duplicate repair. ## What Changed - Expose the existing exact run-only Stop receipt check. Reject empty audit identifiers. - Use that receipt only in cancelled workspace preservation. Keep board Stop and continuation checks unchanged. - Defer preservation while the run still holds a live controller lease. - Schedule that wait at the actual controller lease expiry. A lease renewal observed under the preservation lock also sets the next deadline. - Add a PostgreSQL regression for the remote-workspace-only lifecycle record, resolved watchdog history, normal recovery admission, ownership controls, rollback and idle behavior. - Document the separate file recovery obligation and its physical cleanup limits. ## Verification - Before the fix: the registered-worker PostgreSQL regression fails because the file recovery marker is absent. - After the original repair at `6fd1042efd`: 20/20 focused tests and all five sibling suites pass, 320/320 tests. The exact-head server build and typecheck pass. - The repository reviewer then found that a live controller caused a fixed 30-second retry. Both the existing-lease and real row-lock renewal cases fail against that source. The new `adb1d4eccdd48be4c86906d5bd111a6e39f20191` schedules the actual recorded deadline before locking and after the locked reread. The lock still enforces the ownership guard. - At `adb1d4eccd`: all 22 focused PostgreSQL controls pass. The directly affected retention and board receipt sibling suites also pass, 124/124 tests across three files. They prove no intermediate reads or transactions before expiry, preservation after expiry, and no extra execution. Server typecheck and the exact-head server build pass. - Map checks, module boundary checks and `git diff --check` pass. - Run `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/services/native-runtime/native-cancelled-workspace-preservation.test.ts server/src/services/native-runtime/native-failed-workspace-recovery.test.ts server/src/services/acknowledged-native-stop.test.ts` with the supported external test-database variable set to a disposable local PostgreSQL database. The earlier broader run also covered run control and workspace recovery. - Exact-head [canonical CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41274963476) completed successfully. All 59 current-head checks are terminal with zero failures; required `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e` pass. Both [Greptile](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18517#issuecomment-6553528545) and the [repository assessment](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18517#issuecomment-6553542139) reviewed exact `adb1d4eccd` at 5/5, with zero findings or unresolved threads. The repository assessment's check concludes `NEUTRAL`; the validated assessment itself is 5/5. Earlier reviews, including the valid 4/5 deadline finding at `6fd1042efd`, remain in review history. The [earlier CI run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41273965963) is also retained. No old result substitutes for a current-head gate. - Real sandbox recovery and physical cleanup remain unverified. Earlier failed QA outcomes remain failed. This PR changes no test grade or historical row. - Repo-wide local tests and typecheck were not run. The focused server checks cover this change; canonical CI supplies the remaining repository gates. ## Risks - The newly admitted receipt permits only file preservation. It cannot authorize a continuation, accept a native result or certify provider termination. - Recovery still requires exact company, task, run, lease, allocation and workspace bindings. Accepted results and live owners remain with their existing owners. - Provider or storage failure can leave recovery pending. The source must remain retained until saved-file and physical termination receipts exist. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. Used reasoning, source inspection, tool use and code execution. The exact serving model identifier and context window are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix: complete native chat responses and improve API discovery (#18364)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip must perform work and report its outcome accurately. > - A chat response and its delegated or operator-owned work are separate stages. > - Native chat contracts instead required literal completion of the user's whole request. > - Agents kept searching or waiting even when a truthful handoff should finish the response. > - OpenCode also has separate acknowledgement backlog and empty-response failure paths. > - This PR aligns chat completion with its current stage and makes OpenCode completion truthful. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18098 for retained OpenCode evidence and #18377 for separate eval setup, oracle and reporting repairs. **What happened?** Real pinned OpenCode 1.18.34 reproduced an MCP timeout behind 800 text fragments. Pilot [41222196525](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41222196525) separately exposed a fabricated successful reply after a reasoning-only response. Later restart attempts timed out without an answer. Their native criterion literally required restarting the instance, although the chat instructions and authority required an operator handoff. General authority guidance alone did not resolve it. **Expected behavior:** A standing chat completes its current authorized response. It performs and verifies permitted actions, verifies delegated handoffs, or explains the specific unavailable action and operator path. The worker's task remains separate. Ordinary execution tasks must still complete their requested work. Empty provider responses must not become invented success. **Version and reproduction:** Actual pinned OpenCode and native Rust Runner, with retained full-stack AWS attempts. Product baseline master `51ea624344`. This PR adds no historical catalog to master. ## What Changed - Build standing-chat completion contracts from the server-owned conversation identity. Scope each current request to the response stage; preserve request text, criterion IDs, order, human-response scope and source revisions. Require verified authorized actions and truthful handoffs. Ordinary task contracts stay strict. Existing admitted inputs retain their saved contract during recovery; new contract content uses the existing revision/hash mechanism. - Guide prospective defaults to their owning resource and preserve existing work unless backfill is requested. Guide unavailable board/operator operations to the supported handoff. These are general chat instructions with no eval identities or expected answers. - Batch adjacent assistant text for at most 50 ms and 4,000 UTF-8 bytes. Preserve text, metadata and order; flush before non-text frames and shutdown. - Give an empty OpenCode response one correction within its existing turn, model, reasoning, context and deadline. Accept actual completed answer parts with incomplete headers. Preserve actual active tool work, bound idle evidence grace and fail truthfully if correction stays empty. - Reject empty OpenCode terminals in Rust without actual prose or an accepted semantic result. Never invent successful replies or evidence. Refresh generated project-discovery contracts. - Preserve accurate public API-discovery descriptions for existing project defaults and managed instance restart operations, including their field scope and authority limits. ## Verification **Qualified: [pilot 41256592937](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41256592937) passes 3/3, with all 35 independent checks passing.** | Case | Checks | Full case duration | Evidence and cleanup | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Instance restart | 9/9 | 140.1 s | complete | | Project defaults | 11/11 | 204.2 s | complete | | Project work | 15/15 | 204.0 s | complete | All three are original-attempt results from source `c51e079f7f2364305b131ffd549e263ff78c5335`, containing the exact product files from `13c2b61f31d873a475ea0c3c026b19926ff42301`. Actual saved conversation contracts were inspected, as were ordinary native worker contracts where present. Each protected archive includes the actual API state and final PNG; cleanup completes. Original queries, `openrouter/deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash-1017`, finite case clocks, concurrency one and zero eval retries are preserved. Earlier passes do not transfer into this qualification. Both current heads pass all checks: product **62** (56 success, one neutral, five skipped), catalog **56** (54 success, one neutral, one skipped). Both have exact-head Greptile **5/5**, zero unresolved review threads and clean mergeability. The three trusted private-evidence protocol files remain byte-identical to the dispatch workflow. Raw evidence stays protected. - **2,044 API discovery tests pass.** Red controls showed that “restart instance” selected unrelated drain/settings operations and “save project defaults” selected repository replacement. Accurate public summaries now rank the existing operations correctly; route registration preserves descriptions. No endpoint, permission or field behavior changes. - **112 real-database, authenticated HTTP, native Runner and OpenAPI consumer tests pass locally**, using disposable task-owned Docker PostgreSQL. It was removed afterward; shared IPC was untouched. These cover persisted contract selection, admitted native input and the model envelope together. The isolated CI suites also pass. - **77 focused contract/input/context tests pass.** Red controls catch the wrong conversation predicate; canonical identity requires both agent and user IDs, including the actual heartbeat projection. Ordinary tasks, agent-only issues and planner tasks remain strict. Coalesced requests preserve criterion identities, source hashes and human-response scope. - **144 OpenCode driver tests pass**; native core **441 pass, one ignored**; packaging **56 pass, six skipped**. Server typecheck and build pass. - Real pinned OpenCode/native Runner: a delayed 25-second acknowledgement completes within the original 30-second MCP deadline. The text-fragment control changes 817 notifications / 54.1 seconds / timeout to 45 / 19.0 seconds / accepted finish. Separate fast, six-minute and real authenticated API probes complete 32 tool calls plus finish. These do not reproduce every remaining historical MCP timeout, and no common cause is claimed for all such failures. Retained failures remain attributed to their original source. Earlier runs exposed fabricated empty-response success, prospective-default backfill, a literal whole-task chat criterion, fixture readiness and oracle/reporting defects. The immediately preceding [41250502608](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41250502608), product `c0bf249807` / source `7b1de24ce1`, is **1/3**: work 15/15; restart 4/9 with the repaired contract actually admitted but no answer; defaults timed out before settlement, then exceeded the unchanged 256 MiB original-evidence allowance. Defaults domain behavior on that attempt remains inconclusive. #18377 retains the full attempt ledger, including missing archives and pre-paid cancellations. The fresh 3/3 establishes these selected outcomes; it does not establish full-catalog reliability. ## Risks The shared contract change applies to standing native chats across providers. It changes model instructions and completion scope, while permission, approval and review gates remain enforced by their existing owners. Incorrect model claims remain possible; the product evals independently require actual mutations, native work and delivery. The correction adds at most one provider request within the existing deadline; text batching can delay adjacent text by 50 ms. Three qualified attempts do not establish full-catalog reliability. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with repository inspection, tool use, code execution and live eval tooling. Exact hosted model revision and context-window size are not exposed. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge - [x] Final same-source three-cell pilot passes 3/3 with required evidence and cleanup --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix: serialize native completion replies and bounded retries (#18502)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agents and their work. > - A delegated task reports its result to the source conversation through a durable completion outbox. > - Native execution can succeed before the presentation worker saves the accepted final reply. > - The outbox treated that short interval as a missing answer and cleared the target run. > - The presentation worker then rejected the valid answer because its delivery no longer belonged to that run. > - This change retains the existing target for one fixed presentation grace while accepted presentation is pending. > - The existing presentation owner can save the reply without another model run or more budget. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A completion-delivery retry can run immediately after a native callback succeeds. It clears the callback's delivery target before the presentation worker saves the accepted answer. The reply then fails with `chat_completion_superseded`. A daily run limit correctly blocks the unnecessary replacement run, leaving the conversation active without its saved answer. **Expected behavior** The outbox must retain its current target and attempt while that exact native run has accepted presentation work. The existing presentation worker must save the answer once, acknowledge the delivery, and settle the conversation. Existing actor, session, result, digest, budget and retry checks must remain enforced. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Accept a native DONE result and current-turn final message for a completion callback. 2. Run its due completion-outbox handler after terminal projection but before reply presentation. 3. Run the existing presentation worker. Before this fix it rejects the reply because the outbox has cleared the target. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced on `b7f1c3769c00a107ffe4128b48b0ef8cc452cf3f` through the real PostgreSQL outbox and presentation services. The reported failure remains preserved. A new QA run is required after deployment; local tests do not qualify the deployed fix. Related: #17696 schedules accepted-response recovery. #18118 preserves canonical completion receipts. #18364 handles provider output and response-stage contracts. Those changes do not protect the completion-outbox target during this interval. ## What Changed - Defer a new execution attempt when the existing selector finds pending presentation for the same company, conversation, run and agent. - Retain the queued delivery target and attempt with an atomic compare-and-set. Await the existing scoped worker notification before that write in the same transaction. - Serialize retry with reply insertion under the existing child-task-first lock. Recheck locked task Done state and the delivery's stable completion-event version, status, target, attempt and exact lease. A delivered, retargeted or newer-claim winner prevents another wake. Admit the next attempt only after the winning transaction commits and releases its locks. - Limit presentation grace to five existing one-minute delivery leases, measured from the original run `finishedAt`. Clamp both the delivery lease and the native retry deadline to that immutable limit. Repeated sweeps cannot extend it. After expiry, resume the existing retry, exhaustion and daily-limit checks. - Keep publication authority in the existing materializer. The candidate query only defers a retry. Read the freshly reloaded delivery status, target and saved receipt after acquiring its child-task lock. - Fence both hold and retry writes with the exact claimed event version, attempt and lease. A stalled old hold cannot overwrite a newer lease. - Keep completion-event identity separate from mutable task ownership versions. Ordinary Done reassignment preserves its existing completion event; a real reopen retains normal supersession. - Add real PostgreSQL coverage for the observed ordering, outer commit and rollback, one saved reply, conversation settlement, idle SQL, retry boundaries and superseded deliveries. - Document the completion-outbox and presentation contract. ## Verification - Before the fix, the real PostgreSQL regression fails with `chat_completion_superseded` in `existingChatCompletionReply` when the outbox handles the terminal run first. After the fix, the same test passes without a new model wake. - Focused command: `vitest run --project @paperclipai/server server/src/services/native-runtime/agent-chat-response-recovery.test.ts server/src/__tests__/chat-completion-delivery.test.ts` — **95 pass** on `45f53a8c32fcca0bbdacf717286d37e30c1ba308`, using a disposable database on an owned local PostgreSQL 17 container. - Controls preserve retries for failed, cancelled, missing-final, missing-accepted-result, old-generation, foreign-company and foreign-agent targets. Reset or superseded task versions retain supersession. Digest and external-context declines never authorize a reply, never extend the fixed window, and leave it at exact expiry. An external native deadline cannot extend the limit. A valid reply at the last millisecond saves once without another model run. - The first reviewed head `b6f9c484b9567bc60af6d684c04e00058c1048ed` received Greptile 5/5 but an independent 3/5 review correctly found an unbounded hold. Three new real PostgreSQL controls failed on that source. This head adds the fixed bound and makes them pass. The earlier review, controls and CI remain retained; its review score does not qualify the new head. - The bounded predecessor `7300d2a978a5c4b3c13d85899bed3e98ae3c49fa` received an independent 4/5 review that correctly found an expiry-versus-in-flight-reply race. A real PostgreSQL advisory gate reproduced it after reply authority checked the delivery but before insertion. The retry lock and exact claim CAS now make that control pass. Both orderings, outer rollback, delivered/retargeted/superseded winners and competing lease claims pass. The next-wake test can acquire both parent and child locks, proving dispatch occurs after release. The valid 4/5 review and failing control remain retained. - At `39dd86e8f51d937cf382b2757736e0477201d21d`, both reviews found valid remaining defects: the reply helper still used its pre-lock delivery snapshot, and ordinary Done reassignment could stall a delivery by changing the task version. Four real PostgreSQL controls fail on that source and pass here: concurrent retry-first, a newly saved receipt after waiting, and reassignment within grace or at expiry. A real reopen through the issue service still supersedes the old event. - A later coordinator review found the hold CAS still lacked the attempt and lease fences already present on retry. A real PostgreSQL producer barrier reproduced an old hold shortening a newer claim from 120 seconds to 60 seconds. The same exact claim fences now prevent that overwrite. This failed control is retained; no old run was blindly retried. - The real worker saves one exact run-owned reply and acknowledges the delivery only after outer commit. An outer rollback publishes no reply. After settlement, advancing the scheduler clock by 60 seconds causes no further SQL. - Module boundaries, map structure, `git diff --check` and the canonical server build (including TypeScript and Runner vendor preparation) pass. The first local build stopped in the host package-manager setup; the installed pinned pnpm completed the build. Full repository typecheck, test and build gates pass in current-head CI; they have not all been run locally. - Final local checks also caught a test cleanup type error (TS2677) and one 94/95 readiness failure: the worker saves its comment before post-commit conversation settlement finishes. The test-only follow-up removes an invalid cleanup type predicate and waits on the existing bounded worker-quiet check before reading final state. All assertions and the same five-second bound remain. Source `45f53a8c32fcca0bbdacf717286d37e30c1ba308` passes all 95 cases and the canonical server build. The earlier failures are retained. - The final policy cleanup removes only 15 newly added narrative comment lines (seven service, eight test), as required by CONTRIBUTING.md. Both TypeScript AST signatures and `removeComments=true` emitted JavaScript are identical to tested source `45f53a8c32`. This was checked with the TypeScript 6.0.3 API and the installed native TypeScript 7.0.2 compiler. Assertions, timeouts and behavior are unchanged; the 95 tests were not repeated for identical compiled code. - The superseded `45f53a8c32` CI run recorded two 15-second timeouts in attention-retention cases. That failure remains retained. The test and its ten inspected owner or support files are identical on the tested master revisions. The canonical base run passes all 53 attention cases, and the comparison PR passes the same server lane, including those two cases in 9.3 and 9.8 seconds. This does not establish the timeout cause. Current-head CI is a new run after the required comment cleanup, not a retry of the failed source. - The optional Paperclip review bot ended neutral without a completed assessment because its execution paused. That result is not an approval. A separate [independent read-only audit](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18502#issuecomment-6550216227) reports 5/5 confidence on exact head `9cfd3f74c69cc7a2da7b4ee5d1fca80f15d4af0c`, with no findings. Its manual assessment does not replace or relabel the incomplete bot result. - Current head `9cfd3f74c69cc7a2da7b4ee5d1fca80f15d4af0c` has a fresh Greptile 5/5 review with no open threads. [CI run 41249007430](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41249007430) passes all primary jobs and both required gates (`ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`). All 59 PR contexts are terminal, with no failed contexts. The actual CI checkout is `18db9e2750d6a799f26b5b8ba31bcccbea254227`, which combines master `681f7b77262a9df6c1b4aad55291bf960061e491` with this exact head. Fresh QA verification on the deployed application remains required before claiming the live failure is fixed. ## Risks A candidate can retain a delivery whose stricter presentation checks still prevent publication, but only within the fixed five-minute window. The existing worker keeps publication authority. If a valid reply remains unavailable at expiry, the normal callback retry may require another admitted model run; the original result and completed child work remain preserved. Existing retry, exhaustion, model-run and spending limits still apply. Failed or cancelled execution and genuinely missing accepted output retain the existing retry path. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with repository inspection, tool use and code execution. The runtime does not expose the exact hosted revision or context-window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
feat(workspaces): keep remote files off the webserver disk (#18403)
Keep native sandbox workspace files independent of the webserver disk. Use encrypted saved versions and Postgres ownership so a replacement server can recover files and continue work. Enable the path by default for new eligible workspaces when durable storage is configured. Preserve explicit opt-outs and existing host workspaces. Include safe snapshot repair, Files access, import, migration and retention. Bound saved-Files resources, preserve imported Git recovery, reject unfinished Git operations, publish immutable concurrent captures, and verify permanent object-version deletion. Validated 471 targeted local controls, build/typechecks, all 40 CI partitions, fresh Greptile 5/5 and security review. The PR records original failed attempts and scoped retries. feat(native): record verified provider-pack session admission (#18469)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Remote native sessions can use an installed pack or a retained earlier pack. > - The current app revision does not identify the pack that a session admitted. > - Core already verifies the selected pack and binds its launch artifacts. > - Normal run records lack a closed receipt for that admitted selection. > - This pull request records that receipt after session admission and attachment. > - Operators can compare the actual Core admission identity with their expected pack. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #17749 for protected provider-pack selection and #18343 for retained controller recovery. The related OpenCode producer repair is #18456. Those changes do not publish the closed run receipt added here. A search found no existing `nativeProviderPackAdmission` PR. **What happened?** Core can admit a compatible installed provider pack with a source revision that differs from the current app. A retained session can also keep its original pack. The normal run record does not show the admitted pack digest, proxy digest, and source revision. An expected launch path or current app revision cannot fill that evidence gap. **Expected behavior** The run has a closed, server-owned receipt after actual session admission and attachment. The first receipt remains immutable history. A separate current-proof state verifies only the actual current admission epoch. Retained recovery needs positive original provenance, and missing legacy evidence stays unknown. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Select and verify an installed pack whose digest differs from the current app pack. 2. Open the native session successfully. 3. Inspect the normal run profile for a bound admission receipt. **Paperclip version or commit** The original selected base was `8bcc5a01edd5d87540401521e6f30d3df43e1848`. The branch now includes exact actual prerequisite parent `3ee4c5b6138da82d0b1f51aa010540561bf43c22`; the PR diff against it is the five receipt, executor, test and documentation files. **Deployment mode** Core remote native execution with provider-pack selection and retained session attachment. ## What Changed - Retain the verified selected pack identity only after a backend returns the matching admitted session. - Publish `runnerProfileJson.nativeProviderPackAdmission` from the session callback after attachment succeeds. - Mark the receipt with `stage: session_admitted` and `authority: core_verified_selection`. - Store bound company, agent, run, session, runner, logical `runnerEnvironmentLeaseId`, pack digest, OpenCode proxy digest, and source revision fields. Retained attachments identify `inheritedFromRunId`. The logical Runner scope is distinct from the physical environment lease. - Lock the current coordinator claim before the profile write. Check owner, attempt, generation, controller boot, lease expiry, phase, and absence of an accepted result. Merge JSON fields without replacing other profile data. - Restore retained metadata only from the exact prior closed Core receipt, positively verified prior state and matching retained binding. Capture same-run prior provenance from the locked claim row before invalidation; cross-run recovery reads only the exact source. Legacy absence remains unknown while recovery continues. - Preserve the first receipt as history. Atomically mark a new opaque admission epoch pending in the existing mandatory claim transaction. Publish current verification only for the matching claim and epoch after actual attachment; changed or unsupported admission becomes unknown without blocking authorized execution. - Preserve synchronous session publication and quarantine ordering before the best-effort receipt write. Fresh replacement selects its newly verified pack; a captured retained-process flag cannot relabel the replacement with an older pack. Preserve the existing private pack authority even when a local dirty revision is ineligible for the closed receipt. - Add focused admission, recovery, identity, PostgreSQL ownership, lock, and JSON-preservation tests. Document the receipt contract. ## Verification - RED: the actual managed-backend path verified and admitted an installed pack but had no closed metadata. Failed open published no evidence. Additional controls fail when retained recovery invents missing history or dirty-revision eligibility gates the existing private authority. - RED calibration: removing mandatory pending invalidation fails the actual pre-admission control; reusing the retained flag for fresh replacement falsely restores the old pack. Removing the epoch fence fails the real PostgreSQL stale-callback case; reintroducing a receipt-specific execution error fails both authorized Runner/logical-lease replacement controls. - GREEN: 49 focused Core tests, all 33 admission identity/transaction tests (20 pure and 13 PostgreSQL), and all 23 existing private-authority tests passed on exact integrated head `165a9096cf3e0d34d2db1e6b52960ad4ac0ad132`. No all-skipped run is counted. - Final test-only head `11ac34baf00552a5d322b5f5f1a8e491859cacec` adds the positive executor-callback SQL-writer wiring control, exact session/identity/claim/epoch assertions, profile preservation, and null-session zero-write check. Removing only the production writer call makes it fail on a missing receipt. All70 focused identity/Core tests pass with this closure; production code, the13 PostgreSQL tests and the23 private-authority tests are byte-identical to the qualified165 source (106 distinct passing controls across the combined proof). - The PostgreSQL tests used an owned loopback-only cached Postgres 17 container with the supported `PAPERCLIP_TEST_POSTGRES_ADMIN_URL` helper and aliases to current DB/shared source. The container was removed afterward. They cover immutable history, JSON preservation, stale claims and epochs, expired leases, terminal runs, changed/unsupported replacements, and a failed write retaining pending proof. - Historical pushed `f7f12fe` CI executed all 24 earlier admission tests, including nine PostgreSQL cases, in server5. Its warm-quarantine failure exposed the new hook-ordering issue fixed here. The same run also encountered a six-character UUID fixture-prefix collision and the independently repaired cached issue-link browser selector; those historical failures are not claimed as green. - Node 24.22.2 and Vitest 5.0.3. The credential-free normal QA runtime import preflight passes with networking disabled. Map contracts, token gates and `git diff --check` pass. - Local TypeScript validation still sees stale borrowed Runner/shared declaration mismatches outside the changed ranges. No diagnostics remain in the new helper or changed test/hook ranges; clean current-head CI is required. - Repository-wide typecheck, full tests and build were not completed locally. A full local executor attempt reached this host's unsupported native PostgreSQL listener and was interrupted; its result is not counted. Canonical run `41214512239`, attempt 2, is successful on exact final head `11ac34baf00552a5d322b5f5f1a8e491859cacec`. All 59 checks are terminal: 55 success, 3 skipped and 1 neutral; none failed or pending. The actual Linux suites execute all 33 admission tests (including 13 PostgreSQL cases) and all 1,022 executor tests successfully. The [original five failures and bounded unchanged-source controls](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18469#issuecomment-6545593767) remain preserved. One failed-only request was made; GitHub expanded the reusable workflow call and dependents. No second request was made. Fresh exact-head Greptile review is 5/5, all review threads are resolved, and the PR is mergeable. - These local results claim no live provider admission, rollout or recovery. ## Risks - The authority is Core's verified selection plus successful session admission. It is not an independent provider statement or continuous runtime measurement. - Receipt fields cannot grant execution or replace the existing provider, process, lease, workspace, or recovery checks. - Legacy missing receipts and unavailable database reads remain unknown. The current release cannot label an older admitted pack. - The closed receipt requires a clean, 40-character hexadecimal source revision. Verified local `-dirty` packs still execute and retain their existing private recovery authority; their closed admission proof stays `unknown`, so it cannot certify an immutable source revision. - The first receipt is historical. Consumers must require current state `verified`; pending or unknown cannot certify the current pack. Changed Runner scope or pack evidence does not add execution policy. - A receipt save failure leaves the atomically invalidated state pending. The existing artifact authority, cancellation, workspace and process checks remain responsible for execution safety. - The receipt adds no manifest, environment, credential, or filesystem path to the run record. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with reasoning, code editing, and tool use. The session does not expose an exact model build ID or context-window capacity. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub references) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(chat): recover committed native Agent Chat replies (#18465)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agent work and keeps its results available to users. > - Agent Chat needs a visible reply before the conversation can wait for more input. > - Native result commitment and reply presentation are separate obligations. > - A completed conversation can retain a valid final message without a saved reply. > - Existing reply recovery excludes these completed conversation turns. > - This pull request repairs that persistence gap through the existing recovery worker. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A native Agent Chat turn completed successfully and saved its workspace. Its accepted result and final assistant message were durable, but no reply appeared in the conversation. The chat stayed active. The deployment hiring journey in #18351 then reached its deadline while waiting for the first reply. **Expected behavior** Recover the exact accepted turn's final reply once, then use normal conversation settlement. Keep later user input active. Do not run the agent again or replace a selected or deleted reply. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Create an active conversation with one admitted native turn. 2. Commit an accepted DONE result and a final-channel assistant message for that exact run, session and turn. 3. Finish workspace finalization before live heartbeat reply presentation. Leave no saved reply. 4. Run normal response recovery. Before this fix it finds no conversation candidate and leaves the chat active. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced with actual services at frozen master `8bcc5a01edd5d87540401521e6f30d3df43e1848`. The production predicate also exists in the deployed revision that exposed the failure. Related work: #18351. The broader receipt and recovery work in #18118 and #18409 does not touch these source files. ## What Changed - Discover unanswered committed Agent Chat turns through the existing native response presentation worker. - Recheck company, agent, responsible user, current execution and conversation generation under the normal transaction locks. - Require the accepted result digest and an exact final message from the same native run, session and accepted turn. Keep external publication authority separate. - Commit the reply and presentation receipt before normal conversation settlement. Later input stays active. Recovery does not repeat agent work. - Preserve skip decisions and selected or deleted replies. Add database controls for foreign identity, stale sessions, partial commitment, duplicates and ordinary internal task behavior. - Document the recovery boundary in the developer guide. ## Verification - Real-service RED/GREEN uses all 418 canonical migrations in isolated PGlite and the exact new regression fixture. Before the fix: zero candidates, no reply, recovery returns false and the chat stays active. After the fix: one candidate, one exact reply, recovery returns true and the chat waits. A repeat returns false and creates no second reply. - All 20 canonical regression cases pass locally through a fixture-only PGlite bridge. Only local database provisioning and `createDb` selection differ from the normal embedded PostgreSQL fixture. Production services, SQL queries, transactions, protocol validation and assertions remain real. Linux embedded PostgreSQL CI is required before merge. - Focused current-source no-emit typing passes for both production modules and the new regression file, with normal Express augmentation and source aliases. The broader local presentation/ownership and conversation-settlement PGlite bridge run was interrupted before it reported results; it is not counted as a pass. No repository-wide local build is claimed from borrowed workspace dependencies. Clean-build CI and canonical PostgreSQL consumer tests remain required. - `git diff --check` and the scoped source/test secret scan pass. No captured run data, credentials or private target identities are committed. - No live journey retry, deployment, configuration change or test-plan admission was performed. The original failed journey remains failed; this production fix still needs deployed qualification through the unchanged journey. - Current-head [canonical Linux CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41207018345) passed all 57 terminal checks with no failure or pending check. The new 20-case database regression actually passed in [server shard 8](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41207018345/job/124555006090), at 13:59:25 UTC (2,643 ms). Typecheck, build and the existing consumer lanes passed. Fresh [Greptile review](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18465#issuecomment-6544208002) on exact `f32a432e10b377ae6277d6f728995d5fedcf9d7b` is 5/5; the review-thread inventory is empty with no pagination. No live deployment or journey pass is claimed by these checks. ## Risks Eligible active conversations can gain a previously missing reply. Recovery accepts only the exact saved final message under its accepted result and current conversation identity. It does not run a model, repeat hiring or change a prior test grade. Reply persistence precedes waiting-state settlement; existing conversation recovery retains ownership of a later interrupted settlement. No schema or public API changes are included. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The session does not expose a more specific backend model ID or fixed context window. Used reasoning, repository tools, TypeScript and real database test execution. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |
fix(native): fence retries when replaying an audited Stop (#18457)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Native runs keep Stop intent and retry state in durable records. > - A provider error can leave a failed retry with an earlier acknowledged Stop. > - The replay path returned the existing receipt before it closed that retry. > - This pull request applies the existing retry fence to the validated replay. > - The same Stop can settle without another provider cancellation or a new receipt. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #14733 for the related caller-bound Stop contract. This change covers a later retry that already has a Stop acknowledgement. The older CI-only #14743 is not a production delivery PR. **What happened?** A failed native run can have a retryable coordinator and an earlier audited Stop. A repeat Stop returns the old acknowledgement without moving the coordinator to `terminal_failure`. The final failed-to-cancelled transition requires that fence, so the Stop cannot settle through that path. **Expected behavior** A valid replay closes the same retry and keeps the original intent and acknowledgement. It does not send a second provider cancellation. Physical stop and workspace cleanup still require their own evidence. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Store a failed native run with a `retryable_failure` coordinator. 2. Store a matching run-scoped Stop with a dispatched acknowledgement and audit IDs. 3. Call `cancelNativeSession` for that same run and inspect the coordinator. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced on public master `f2db909393de124caf6a5380a52d4e0e1d621661`. **Deployment mode** Core native execution. The regression uses the real cancellation executor with controlled persistence and provider boundaries. ## What Changed - Reuse the existing guarded coordinator fence for a validated Stop replay. - Test repeated replay, unchanged receipts, one fence, and no second provider cancellation. - Reject foreign company, run, issue, scope, effect, and missing-audit receipts before any write. - Check that an acknowledged Stop with an unconfirmed remote lease still fails the physical-stop guard. - Document the separate retry fence and physical-cleanup requirements. ## Verification - RED on the selected public base: the new executor case returned success but left the coordinator in `retryable_failure` with a future retry. One case executed and failed for that assertion. - GREEN: 62 focused tests passed across `native-session-executor.test.ts` and `native-cancellation-request.test.ts`. These include ownership, caller conflict, changed-phase, and receipt controls. - Command from `server/`: `node ../node_modules/vitest/vitest.mjs run src/services/native-runtime/native-session-executor.test.ts src/services/native-runtime/native-cancellation-request.test.ts -t 'native session cancellation|caller-bound native cancellation|failed native retry caller admission'`. - Canonical Linux CI passed all 1,018 executor cases and all 32 caller-cancellation cases. The exact file completion lines are in [server shard 2](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41203989386/job/124545366271) and [server shard 10](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41203989386/job/124545366219). - Node 24.22.2 and Vitest 5.0.3. Map contract checks and `git diff --check` pass. - Local dependencies are linked from an existing checkout. Full local TypeScript validation reports older Runner/shared declarations that lack current Kimi and continuity APIs. The changed ranges have no diagnostics. The canonical clean CI Typecheck + Release Registry gate passed. - A broader two-file run was stopped when an unchanged integration case tried to start embedded Postgres and hit the host listen restriction. It is not a passing full-suite result. No host settings or other services were changed. - Repository-wide `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm test:run`, and `pnpm build` were not completed locally. Current-head CI passed against clean source and dependencies. - Fresh [Greptile review](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18457#issuecomment-6543772487) on `dbc1c1a5b71450194d568725592969660864cb5a`: 5/5 with no actionable findings. The review-thread inventory has no threads and no pagination. Full [current-head CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41203989386) passed: 59 terminal checks, 55 successful, 3 skipped, and 1 neutral. No failure or pending check remains. Merge status is CLEAN. No live recovery, rollout, or physical termination is claimed. ## Risks - A wrong or stale Stop must not close another retry. Existing run/coordinator locks, caller checks, receipt binding, and the final compare-and-set remain in place. - This fix changes logical retry settlement only. Provider termination, workspace preservation, lease cleanup, and continuation gates remain separate. - The regression controls persistence and provider boundaries. It does not establish the physical state of a remote provider. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with reasoning, code editing, and tool use. The session does not expose an exact model build ID or context-window capacity. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub references) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
perf(server): recover independent native replies concurrently (#18421)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages work for AI agents. > - A native run can commit its result before its reply is saved. > - The response recovery worker saves replies from those committed results. > - It checks each candidate in series, so one task can delay unrelated tasks. > - This pull request checks up to four independent tasks at once. > - Each task keeps serial checks, and the existing coordinator owns retries and shutdown. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** Recovery of committed native task replies. **Current behavior** The worker checks one candidate at a time in a batch of up to 25. A database lock or a slow read for one task delays replies for other tasks. **Proposed behavior** Check up to four company-and-task groups at once. Check candidates within each group in their existing order. Keep the current batch limit and company selection. **Reason and benefit** A ready task reply can be saved while another task waits for a database lock. The change reduces waiting under a reply backlog. **Breaking changes** Replies for different tasks can be saved in a different order. There are no API or schema changes. Other deadline workers keep serial dispatch. Related work: #17696 adds the recovery worker. #17501 reduces its read payloads. #18367 adds its timing spans. These changes are already merged. The PR search found no open change that adds this concurrency. ## What Changed - Add optional keyed concurrency to the shared scoped deadline worker. - Enable a limit of four for native response recovery, keyed by company and task. - Await all active checks before the pass ends. Retain per-candidate failure backoff, drain behavior and pending work. - Test concurrency limits, task order, company separation, drain/resume, shutdown, retries and idle wake behavior. - Add a PostgreSQL regression that holds one task's finalization row lock while a second task saves its exact accepted reply. - Document the worker's concurrency and sleep contract. ## Verification - The PostgreSQL lock regression fails with serial dispatch. It passes with this change. Both accepted replies are saved once after the lock is released. - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/scoped-deadline-work.test.ts server/src/__tests__/delivery-work-coordinator.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-work-batch.test.ts server/src/__tests__/deadline-work.test.ts server/src/services/execution-preparation-timing.test.ts` — 55 tests pass. - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/services/presentation-ownership-read.test.ts` with its documented dedicated PostgreSQL URL — 21 tests pass. The disposable database was dropped. - `pnpm -r typecheck` — passes. - `pnpm build` — passes. - One matched local replay with 25 older pending replies and one fresh reply used the real worker, a 10-connection PostgreSQL pool and 8 ms delay in each network direction. The saved fresh reply was first observed after 29.193 s with serial dispatch and 9.798 s with this change. All 26 replies were saved exactly once in both runs, with no worker errors. Both disposable databases were dropped. This is one synthetic workload pair, not a staging measurement. - `pnpm test:run` was attempted. Embedded PostgreSQL could not initialize its template after five attempts, so the broad run was stopped. The changed PostgreSQL tests pass on the separate local server. Remote CI is green. This PR does not claim a measured staging speedup. - The [first CI browser shard](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41162257463/job/124422204506) failed during company cleanup after its task assertions and empty-run check passed. Company deletion hit the `activity_log_company_id_companies_id_fk` constraint. The fixture uses paused process agents and reported no runs. The one failed-jobs rerun passed all 45 browser tests. All CI checks are now green. ## Risks - Four checks can use more database connections than serial recovery. The limit applies to this queue only; the batch limit stays at 25. - The shared helper has more dispatch logic. Its default remains serial. Tests cover task order, retry deadlines, drain and waiting for active checks during shutdown. - This improves reply recovery under backlog or lock contention. It does not establish a target for total agent-turn latency. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with code editing, tool use and local test execution. This session does not expose a more specific model ID or context-window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(native): recover controllers across webserver replacement (#18343)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Native execution runs in a remote Runner while the webserver owns its controller. > - Encrypted PRP checkpoints and session snapshots already survive a webserver restart in Postgres. > - Ordinary warm and per-turn admission still needs local markers and supervisor metadata to find that state. > - Replacing the webserver with an empty native controller directory can therefore lose a usable retained session. > - This change adds bounded recovery metadata to the existing snapshot transaction and reconstructs local projections from the selected durable source. > - The benefit is native execution continuity across webserver replacement, with the existing ownership and agent lifecycle policies. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** Native remote controller recovery and retained-session continuation during a webserver upgrade. **Subsystem affected** server/ — native runtime, checkpoint persistence, recovery scheduling and internal upgrade reporting. Product E2E qualification also changes. **Current behavior** Without both the local PRP marker and supervisor file, normal continuation can return before discovering the saved Postgres checkpoint. The snapshot already exists in Postgres, but its local reuse compatibility envelope cannot be reconstructed. **Proposed behavior** Select the existing durable source, validate its identity and ownership, restore its PRP state and supervisor projection, then use normal authenticated admission. Missing or inconsistent evidence holds recovery. It does not authorize fresh provider work. **Reason and benefit** A replacement webserver must recover active execution and later continue its retained session without the old server's native files. This is one component of deployment continuity. HTTP traffic switching, workspace storage migration and Railway rollout remain separate. **Breaking changes** No new public endpoint, schema migration or database pool. The private run-profile envelope is additive. Disk-independent rollback also requires a reader for the staged controller format and compact checkpoint part; the first production release containing these readers is the floor. Older file-backed sessions need an owner checkpoint or the bounded internal importer. **Additional context** Related foundations: #17401, #17916, #17254, #14621, #14622. The implementation contract and open acceptance gates are in [the dated plan](doc/plans/2026-10-30-native-controller-checkpoints.md). ## What Changed - Persist a versioned recovery envelope, at most 4 KiB, beside the redacted session snapshot in its existing transaction. Keep it out of public run projections. - Compare frozen admission separately from prepared attachment instructions during staged recovery, preserving exact template/identity/authority checks. - Bound the existing lazy checkpoint pool at three connections after measured two-slot burst backlog; keep request/renewal capacities and SQL operation counts unchanged. The tuning is a separate commit. - Discover and restore the exact selected retained source without local native markers. Preserve the 32-candidate window, progress barriers and current authority checks. - Fence snapshot and result writes. Acquire coordinator, issue and run locks in order and check expiry after lock waits. Combine snapshot ownership/read work into one statement. - Reuse existing recovery deadlines and drain/resume scheduling. Retained-owner waits preserve the original unstarted run and actual lease deadline. Stop, ownership and provider-progress fences precede deferral. Add bounded native evidence reporting, retained-source import and retention protection. - Admit a settled warm source with an authenticated idle goal-read suffix while retaining active-work and mixed-authority holds. - Permit lifecycle `turn.stop` checkpoints after accepted results under existing ownership fences. Claim the existing successor coordinator before retiring the old warm session, and stage shared attachments only after verified retirement. Preserve omitted isolated-home defaults and existing fresh skill-selection order during recovery without hiding real configuration changes. - Carry the exact durable six-field PRP binding during active recovery after a healthy warm handoff. Keep the Runner mismatch guard and preserve opaque attachment IDs. - Preserve an already verified active or idle warm process during remote preparation; revalidate its proof/liveness and retain later authenticated PRP attachment. Ordinary resumed leases retain suspension checks. - Drain retained source events under their original authority, reconcile immutable source accounting and block unknown source tool dispatch before target work. - Persist compact staged handoff intent through authenticated adoption and recover direct/listener command-loss windows without another Runner or duplicate attachment. - Rebuild suspended lifecycle receipts for resumed prepared tasks, and retry missing lifecycle reads after partial PRP materialization without overwriting contradictory evidence. - Add normal warm/per-turn diskless continuation coverage, real Postgres races and SQL-cost checks. Add a reproducible paired load workload. - Give only the explicit outage fixture a 15-minute provider idle window, with a red/green catalog regression preserving all production timing and lifecycle policies. - Publish the goal-less task-session pointer in the existing post-acceptance terminal checkpoint transaction, with current ownership, accepted-result, reset and newer-progress fences. Keep a private bound receipt so late completion cannot duplicate or resurrect publication. - Use a retained warm sandbox in the dedicated continuity fixture, and accept an exact output token followed by an explanation. Keep the strict identity oracle. - Extend the explicit Daytona cell to a five-minute active outage and another replacement after completion. Require retained provider identity, a new tool receipt and a useful follow-up result. Add an owned loopback Postgres E2E fixture for hosts that cannot start embedded Postgres. ## Verification **Merge recommendation — `fc68584ce6231a02e47ecd743f55b036ccea034f`: ready for the qualified native-controller component.** Full CI, fresh review, local application paths, controlled performance qualification and the strict live Linux/Daytona case pass. Independent resource cleanup is complete. Broader rollout, browser reconnection and the unexecuted transport/platform combinations remain integration gates. Integrated 484 passed full local recursive typecheck/build and ordinary active→completion→cache-loss→C component qualification. Fresh review then found a valid attached-wake failure: preparation appends attachment instructions before the verifier compares execution to the frozen admission. 9f4 fixes that by separately checking the pre-preparation admission and exact prepared execution. Both hashes are captured privately per admission; the full template, identity, configuration and authority checks remain. Its regression fails before the fix; 36 focused cases, 42 staged source/target cases and server typecheck pass afterward. The review thread is resolved. Exact-head full CI passes ([run 41168228822](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41168228822): 48 successful jobs, one intended skip); the complete `pnpm test:run` partitions are forced, with the five native suites in the Runner lane. This is not a claim that an unsharded local command passed. The fresh exact-head Greptile check succeeds with 5/5 and all six threads resolved. The original two-connection database comparison closes **steady PASS and burst FAIL**. Every relative CPU/WAL/request-p99 gate passes and all operations/ownership remain correct, but candidate arm 3 drains in 1,015.99 ms and baseline arm 4 in 1,059.67 ms against the unchanged 1,000 ms absolute gate. Those results remain failed. A separate 2→3→4→2 diagnostic reproduces drain times 1,051.57 / 956.79 / 882.02 / 1,065.72 ms: three is the smallest tested passing cap, and the repeated two-cap failure survives run-order/cache effects. Separately reviewable `fc68584ce6` changes the existing lazy checkpoint pool default to three connections. Request capacity stays ten and liveness two; idle release, shutdown fencing, transaction counts and pool count are unchanged. Thirteen DB lifecycle/cap tests and DB typecheck pass. Full recursive typecheck/build pass at exact |
feat(chat): deliver proactive task messages to agent chats (#18374)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Agent Chat gives each person a persistent conversation with each
agent.
> - Tasks and routines produce results outside that conversation.
> - Those runs need a safe way to bring a requested result back to the
person.
> - The server must select the agent's own chat and check the source
task's access rules.
> - This pull request adds proactive chat messages and unread
indicators.
> - People can see the result, open its source task, and reply in the
same chat.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
**Subsystem affected**
Server, native runner tools, shared contracts, database, and UI.
**Problem or motivation**
An agent can report progress on a task or comment on an authorized task.
It cannot send a routine result to its own standing chat with the
responsible person. A morning review routine therefore cannot leave a
visible digest in that person's chat.
**Proposed solution**
Add `send_chat_message({body, idempotencyKey})` and `POST
/api/agents/me/chat/messages`. The server selects the company, agent,
and responsible person from the active run. It saves an attributed
comment and audit record in one transaction. The chat shows a
source-task link and per-person unread state.
**Alternatives considered**
A destination parameter on a generic comment tool would expose
unnecessary routing authority. A new delivery worker would add another
durable delivery path. This change uses a dedicated tool and the
existing comment and live-event paths.
**Roadmap alignment**
This extends the experimental Agent Chat capability in `ROADMAP.md`. The
existing `enableAgentChat` setting controls it. Related public work:
Refs #13282, Refs #13283, and Refs #14408. Searches for proactive chat
and unread chat found no duplicate PR.
## What Changed
- Add a focused messaging service shared by the native tool and HTTP
route. It checks current run ownership, execution mode, recipient
membership, task access, and task privacy.
- Reuse the canonical company/agent/person conversation. Save the
comment and audit record together. Keep task completion and chat
execution separate from delivery.
- Add source-task provenance and source-scoped retry keys. Identical
retries return the saved receipt. Changed content returns a conflict.
- Enforce the conversation's fixed agent at the shared comment-write
boundary. Keep normal reply cancellation and session checks.
- Add chat unread state, accessible agent dots, aggregate Chat
indicators, and visible-message read cutoffs. Refresh through existing
live events.
- Add the request-key constraint, native tool contracts, documentation,
capability maps, stories, and regression coverage.
## Verification
- Local delivery/security proof: all 38 proactive-message cases pass.
Eight credential-scope regressions and four quota regressions fail
against the prior source. The repaired delivery and canonical
cross-issue cap suites pass all 49 cases; all 31 OpenAPI tests, server
typecheck, and capability-map checks pass. The shared per-run cap covers
native and HTTP sends, mixed ordinary mutations, concurrent last-slot
contention, and retry/recovery without double charging.
- Credential tests preserve the authenticated person and authorizer;
reject bridge/test credentials and persisted skill-test runs after
task-mode changes; and recheck API-key revocation, scope, and
responsible person after destination locking. The earlier
delivery/native-authority suites passed all 74 cases before the four
quota additions.
- Four PostgreSQL contention cases cover native and HTTP sends plus
retries during a native chat mutation. All four deadlock against the
earlier source and pass with destination-before-source/run locking.
Recovery and human-reply delivery enqueue only the human comment; a
proactive digest never wakes the chat agent.
- Passed 108 companion conversation, native-authority, and OpenAPI
tests; 112 runner catalog/workflow-report tests; 47 completion-delivery
tests; and 25 project-handoff tests. Focused runner tests cover native
tool availability without generic API tools.
- All 327 affected UI tests, UI typecheck, token gates, and catalog
checks pass. The read hook retries at most three times, respects server
retry delay, coalesces only seen cutoffs, recovers on reconnect, and
cancels on scope changes.
- Real browser journeys with a deterministic process agent verify
routine-to-chat delivery, first-chat creation, unread state across
reload, the source link, secondary chat navigation, and a follow-up
reply referring to the digest. This does not qualify live GitHub
retrieval or model output quality.
- The Storybook showcase uses production components with deterministic
network fixtures. Rendered interactions pass for the landing, ordinary
read success, transient read recovery, and persistent failure after
bounded retries. Both Chat navigation variants update from two unread
chats to one while only Kodi's dot clears. Mobile and light variants
were reviewed. The existing Coordinator Recents label contrast finding
is unchanged; no Linux visual baseline archive exists.
- Current master's independent sandbox migration retains 0418.
Regenerated the feature migration as 0419 from the combined schema and
retained exactly the newest five snapshots; numbering/safety, replay,
and schema-drift checks pass.
- Workspace typecheck and build passed before PR preparation; canonical
server/UI typechecks passed again on the combined tree. Migration
`0419_slippery_impossible_man.sql` passes safety and schema drift checks
on disposable PostgreSQL, including interrupted index repair, concurrent
migrators, one-time owner read-state backfill, preserved receipts, and
two SQL replays. A default five-second local snapshot comparison timed
out; a diagnostic 30-second run passed without drift.
- Earlier failures are retained in the record: full local `pnpm
test:run` and broad shards encountered embedded-PostgreSQL startup,
timing, and provider-recovery failures. Thirteen selected
external-channel cases pass in isolation on the original and changed
sources; an unordered comment-row assertion now explicitly orders both
reads. The earlier route registry, native tool count, runner catalog,
and accessible Chat badge-name failures were fixed and passed full
remote CI on `920b3bb7db`.
- Repeated managed-skill server8 failures came from CI's newer synthetic
merge: its Cloud guard correctly rejected the old local-disk fixture.
Master independently repaired the fixture in #18385; this branch keeps
that repair unchanged. All 57 managed-skill and Cloud prerequisite cases
pass on the combined tree, and that fixture has no remaining PR diff.
- Current reviewed head `dc16f314739a6d977bed21cb1446d0e80a541578`:
Greptile 5/5 with no findings, Superagent security assessment passed,
advisory Paperclip Review 5/5 with no findings, and zero open review
threads. All 55 current-head check runs pass, with five expected skips
and the advisory review neutral at 5/5; Snyk also passes. No checks are
pending or failing. Protected squash auto-merge is enabled and is
waiting for required code-owner approval. A normal exact-head merge was
refused by the base-branch policy; no admin bypass was used. The
previous head's Superagent quota finding is fixed and covered above.
## Risks
- Chat remains company-visible. Delivery rejects a source task with
private-task, project, or ancestor restrictions.
- Read state uses a comment timestamp cutoff. The server retains
database precision and never moves a read receipt backward.
- The new unique constraint changes comment query planning. An existing
regression now uses an explicit row order. The migration builds the
unique index concurrently, then takes a brief table lock to attach it.
It uses the existing top-level migration and interrupted-index recovery
path.
- The upgrade backfills missing chat-owner read-state rows at the latest
existing agent comment. Existing read receipts remain intact. New chats
can still be unread before the human participates.
- Quota observation commits atomically with delivery. A rejected send
rolls back its attempted denial audit row and any first-chat creation;
the canonical warning remains in server logs, and previously spent quota
remains enforced. Identical/conflicting retries and receipt recovery
spend no extra slot.
- This version delivers in-app only. It adds no external-channel, push,
or email delivery.
- Local full-suite acceptance remains limited by the failures recorded
above. The feature stays behind `enableAgentChat`.
## Model Used
OpenAI Codex. PR preparation and CI work used `gpt-6.1-sol` with tool
use and code execution. The earlier implementation also used Codex, but
its exact model ID was not recorded in the visible session. The
context-window size was not provided.
feat(skills): make managed content independent of web-server disk (#18334)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Agents use installed skills and exact version pins during execution. > - Managed skills still depended on mutable directories on the web server. > - A replacement server could lose acknowledged edits or remove an unassigned skill whose directory was absent. > - This pull request makes immutable versions the authority for managed content and installed repository reads. > - The server can rebuild delivery files from durable content after replacement. > - This establishes skills readiness for ephemeral web servers. General server draining and workspace recovery remain separate work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Skills services, shared contracts, database receipts, Skill Studio, and runtime delivery. **Problem or motivation** A fresh web server must discover, read, edit, and deliver protected installed skills using the same database, object storage, secrets, and supported application artifacts. It must not need its predecessor's files or process memory. **Proposed solution** Use `managed` ownership with a null source locator. Read installed content by immutable version. Prepare packages before a short publication transaction. Persist execution selections before materialization. Recover exact pinned runtime assets and reject deletion while active or recovering pins exist. **Alternatives considered** Reconstructing a mutable installed directory preserves the old source-of-truth ambiguity. Permanent dual writes create two competing authorities. This change uses one managed model after a bounded legacy conversion. **Roadmap alignment** This improves the existing Skills Manager, Studio, version history, and Cloud execution capabilities. The maintainer supplied the implementation contract. This does not add a separate skills product or deploy fleet changes. Related work: #18082 supplies immutable package storage. #17273 addresses edits outside the API for linked local skills; this PR keeps that source category separate. #2648 is a closed earlier ephemeral-filesystem proposal. ## What Changed - Add managed ownership and focused content publication and execution materialization modules. Keep the archive format and package storage tables. - Publish managed create, save, delete, fork, rename, restore, and catalog content with version checks. Add durable create receipts. Preserve file-save receipt responses. - Return file version identities. Keep Studio drafts after a conflict and provide an explicit reload action. A delayed reload cannot overwrite newer typing or navigation. - Persist exact runtime selections, including empty selections. Rebuild pinned assets and verify their admitted digests on a replacement server. - Preserve source access on forks and disconnected copies. Keep the existing workspace policy category for managed skills. - Add bounded conversion, eligibility, and independent verification phases. Load persisted Cloud configuration in the standalone CLI without seeding or changing it. Reject partial current versions against installed inventories; recover only complete saved content or the exact source. Document storage migration blockers and the compatible rollback floor. - Add separate-process PostgreSQL/S3 qualification and update domain, retention, policy, and UI regressions. - Pass the plugin worker manager into Studio execution, admit restricted `skill_test` mode through native Runner contracts, and preserve admitted scope across native and REST tools. Native tests cannot create ordinary tasks, browse company data, or use external tools. - Select the exact durable Studio revision even when unassigned or Beta skills is off. Persist Studio output and audit atomically with native task completion, preserving the result on replay. ## Verification - Final revision `13e8af480b88ba6fea5737bac4bd81104d604792` passed full CI: all 49 workflow jobs completed successfully ([run 41127396098](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41127396098)). This includes typecheck, test suites, Runner checks, browser checks and build. Greptile review 15 is 5/5 on that same revision, with zero unresolved threads. The PR is ready for review. - Local workspace typecheck and build passed after integrating master. Focused checks passed: 33 execution/completion cases, 52 Runner HTTP cases, 16 managed-content cases, 17 Studio cases, the new real-process CLI regression, map checks and UI token gates. The CLI regression proves inspection does not seed missing Cloud configuration. Server typecheck passed after that fix. - The independent-process PostgreSQL/S3 matrix passed through normal HTTP skill routes. It covers A → B → C replacement, lost commit responses, upload crashes, concurrent saves, binary contents and executable delivery. Metadata listing and warm selected delivery retain zero object downloads. Local timing measurements are recorded; they do not establish hosted latency. - Hosted A → B → C passed on the owned disposable test tenant with external Postgres, S3 and a real remote Paperclip Computer. Predecessor temporary homes were absent. C read and executed B's acknowledged managed save. New runs used repository v1 while v2 was installed. Hashes matched an independently checked exact upstream commit. - Compatible image rollback to `6518b323` passed. Studio retained the unassigned fork's C save. A fresh remote run executed the newer managed content and historical repository pin. The actual shell event confirmed expected hashes, stdout, exit 0 and mode 0555. - Runtime candidate `9200e3fcb4` deployed successfully ([Cloud run 41124147876](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip-cloud/actions/runs/41124147876)). The final Studio test delivered only the unassigned fork's exact v3, executed its script and persisted a successful output snapshot. Independent command-event inspection confirmed all three hashes, stdout, exit 0 and mode 0555. All 14 installations were version-backed. Independent verification checked all 25 versions: 23 remote objects, two bundled database snapshots, zero blockers. - The deployed image is `9200e3fcb4`. Later master integration, the client-only delayed-reload draft guard and the CLI bootstrap have separate automated proof. The CLI bootstrap was also exercised against the tenant's stored configuration and storage through the same read-only services. This PR does not claim that the deployed image is the final PR revision. - Live Studio checks exposed worker wiring, admission, access scope, exact selection and completion-publication gaps. They are fixed. Failed attempts remain in the evidence. The full local suite exceeded 80 minutes under host contention and was stopped. Later combined/isolated local attempts also timed out; they are not counted as passes. Full CI covers the integrated suites. Earlier CI found an obsolete restart-scope fixture, which was corrected and passed all 52 HTTP cases. - Reproduction and migration: [`doc/skill-ephemeral-web-servers.md`](doc/skill-ephemeral-web-servers.md). Pre-conversion binaries are not supported rollback targets afterward. - Cloud readiness requires remote object storage. Local provider receipts and provider mismatches remain blockers until objects are copied and verified. - Linked local sources retain filesystem semantics and are outside the cloud guarantee. - Cold reads still fetch the existing archive format. Warm runtime preparation retains the verified-cache path. - Bundled reconciliation preserves an installed head. Existing release snapshots remain selectable. An older server must not replace a newer head with its shipped files. - No production volumes, fleet defaults, or general deployment coordination change in this PR. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository tools, code execution, and browser use. fix(runner): allow session reset after confirmed task retirement (#18373)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Native warm sessions retain a Runner owner between turns. > - Closing that owner must stop execution and preserve valid recovery state. > - A failed suspension can leave a rejected close promise after the task has stopped. > - A session reset then retries that same promise and blocks every fresh session. > - This PR separates task retirement proof from checkpoint reuse for a new session. > - A reset can proceed after exact stop proof, completed handoff, and file collection. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18011. That change preserves checkpoint authority during warm preparation. This change handles a stopped owner whose checkpoint cannot be reused. Related: #14695 covers managed files retained with warm processes. A search found no duplicate stopped-owner reset fix. **What happened?** A warm Runner can stop and complete its task handoff while close reports `runner did not durably suspend before checkpoint`. The transport caches that rejected close promise. Core retains the warm owner. Each session reset retries the same promise before it can launch a provider. A controller restart clears the in-memory owner and permits recovery. **Expected behavior** A reset to a new normalized session should release the old owner when its exact task has proved that execution stopped and its handoff completed. Core must collect stopped instruction files before it admits the new session. An unconfirmed owner must continue to block replacement. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Complete a warm native run through a plugin task provider. 2. Change configuration so Core retires the warm owner. 3. Let the task stop and complete, but fail durable suspension proof. Close keeps its rejected promise. 4. Reset the session and start another run on the same task environment. 5. Observe the old close error before any new provider work starts. ## What Changed - Keep a lease-bound retirement receipt in the plugin task owner. It requires `executionStopped: true` and successful task completion after credential handoff. - Accept an unrecoverable suspension error only during retirement for a different normalized session, with that exact owner's receipt and settled Core tool results. - Collect stopped instruction files before releasing the warm owner. Preserve old checkpoint evidence. - Keep same-session, active-owner, incomplete-handoff, unrelated-owner, unresolved Core tool results, and other close-error fences. - Report Core tool settlement on the close error after ingress retirement and drain. Default missing proof to false. Expose the error through the server's Runner shim. Add regression tests and document the recovery boundary. ## Verification - The reset regression fails with the new handling disabled and passes with it enabled. - Both affected suites passed: 1,032 tests. The final 15 focused owner/reset cases pass after adding the tool-settlement guard. - The assembled regression uses the real task-owner and backend binding. Its controlled task provider proves stop and completion. Close returns the same rejected promise on every call. - Negative cases cover incomplete handoff, other close errors, same-session continuation, provider change with the same session ID, unrelated receipts, unresolved Core tool results, and failed file collection. Collection can later succeed without replaying stop or reading the old checkpoint. - Five real-process transport cases pass. They cover an insufficient suspension deadline, the cached rejected promise, late tool completion within and beyond the deadline, interruption, and result-persistence failure. Unsettled callbacks produce `semanticToolsSettled: false`. - `pnpm -r typecheck` passed with the repository's pinned Rust toolchain on PATH. After the final contract change, Runner TypeScript build and server `tsc --noEmit` passed. - The local full-suite run was stopped at the requester's direction. Full regression and build coverage are delegated to GitHub CI. - Full GitHub CI passed on `ef0040d80af679ce6d4a130468e15f75678c1f4c`. Standard Greptile reviewed the same commit: 5/5, zero comments. Apex then reviewed that same commit: 5/5, zero comments. Final checks confirm no unresolved review threads and no merge conflicts. - Initial full CI on `00c002fd5a` failed one scheduled-retry route test at 18/20 cancellations. Controlled cancellation latency reproduced the short poll-budget failure. Before the next cycle, master advanced with #18322, which coordinates that test at the first completed batch. The separate local timeout commit was dropped during rebase. The upstream test passes locally. The rebased run passed 46 targeted owner/reset and scheduled-retry route cases. This PR has no scheduled-retry source or test diff. - No deployed provider run or tenant rollout is claimed by these source tests. ## Risks The exception applies only to a new normalized session and an exact completed plugin task. The old checkpoint remains evidence and cannot authorize reuse through this path. The original suspension failure can remain visible on its run. This fix prevents repeated startup failures after a reset; it does not hide unconfirmed cleanup or make every suspension succeed. Missing task receipts and failed file collection continue to block replacement. No schema migration, plugin protocol change, Rust Runner binary change, or new polling is required. Tests use a controlled task boundary; they do not certify every external provider implementation. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with tool use and local code execution. The exact runtime model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub references) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal issue or instance details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] Greptile Apex is 5/5 with no unresolved findings - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix: persist native Runner usage before transport acknowledgement (#18354)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Agent execution must preserve usage so Paperclip can price work and enforce budgets. > - Remote Runner execution can outlive its web receiver. > - The receiver previously acknowledged Runner events before its later usage recorder saved the accounting receipt. > - This pull request saves required native usage receipts before that transport acknowledgement. > - A replacement receiver can accept the same retained report and create one ledger charge. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** Native remote Runner usage could leave its durable outbox before the web receiver saved its accounting receipt. The later recorder required a local receipt directory. A replacement web receiver could lose the only remaining report when the database write failed. **Expected behavior** The Runner retains unaccepted structured usage. Postgres owns accepted receipts. Repeated delivery preserves one receipt for each source report and one charge for the run. Missing usage keeps accounting pending. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Start a supported built-in native remote Runner. 2. Make the receipt database insert fail after the provider reports usage. 3. Replace the web receiver and its local directory. 4. Reconnect the same Runner and inspect the saved receipt and ledger. **Paperclip version or commit** The initial investigation used `ebd05e9f4c88c66af7473db86bbaacfd1544aa0a`. **Deployment mode** A web server with a remote native Runner and shared Postgres. Related work: #18327 owns output logs and provider traces. This change has no dependency on its S3 export path. #18031 covers interrupted Codex receipt recovery. #18005 covers legacy spool reads. #17516 covers Codex stop-boundary retention. ## What Changed - Add native producer receipt delivery through the existing Runner callback before transport acknowledgement. - Reuse `run_usage_receipts`, stable source sequences, and deterministic report identities. Reject conflicting replay and retry a lost commit response with the same receipt. - Restore per-turn usage from structured receipt facts. Preserve provider turns that share one PRP envelope turn. - Bind retained warm transport callbacks to the current run authority epoch, allowing old attachment control acknowledgements while preserving accounting ownership. - Persist Codex session baselines and cumulative totals in the existing provider checkpoint. Mark qualified whole-run deltas, preserve them across resume/restart/attachment, and leave old unmarked reports incomplete and unpriced. - Normalize the bounded final usage tail before the terminal event. Retain later increases for explicit reconciliation, block further attachment, and fail an affected successor without changing its baseline. - Complete runs from the accepted immutable receipt and its exact saved rate-card amount; preserve existing live-budget enforcement. - Skip the local receipt recorder for supported built-in native remote Runner execution. Keep local, legacy, and external Dot/Muse behavior unchanged. - Keep pricing, reservations, ledger settlement, source fencing, and budget holds with their existing owners. - Put the actual Runner integration test in the existing Rust-cached native test lane. Build before opening Postgres and give cold compilation its own bounded budget. ## Verification - Fresh Greptile review is 5/5 on `e7376a50c8162770da1d581ecf25c8cffac64520`, with no unresolved findings. Parent and independent peer review approved the final changes. - Real PostgreSQL 18.6 and a real Rust Runner exercise failed receipt insertion, receiver-directory loss, replay from the same producer, and exactly one 25-cent ledger charge. The actual accounting spool path stays absent. Optional logs/traces are disabled. The provider is controlled; no paid request is made and the fixture never pre-saves the expected receipt. - Producer checks passed 32 usage/provider tests,37 terminal controls, corrected completion, all 3 previously failing exit cases, and both full transport goal-continuation cases. Rejected active-goal completion retains its 120-token tail before failure. Baseline 100→successor150→33 duplicate old snapshots→old120 retains explicit incomplete reconciliation evidence and positive budget exposure. - Heartbeat executor checks passed 982/982. PostgreSQL tests preserve exact 1.002 USD pricing, the 100.2-cent ledger amount, budget holds, source takeover, partial/final receipts, cost-only corrections, equal rate-card replay, and stale-completion interleaving. Newer incomplete usage remains pending rather than settling an older snapshot. - Runtime replay and strict usage-schema checks passed 2/2; generated contracts and Rust formatting pass. Test-partition contracts passed 32/32. - [Final combined-head evidence](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/18354#issuecomment-6531526158) records full workspace typecheck/build and 41/41 accounting tests against all five cloud PR heads, including this final accounting commit. It includes commands and evidence limits. - Exact-head CI is green: 53successful checks, 6intentional skips, and the legacy Snyk status passed. Typecheck, build, Runner, server, browser, and aggregate gates pass. Runner Vitest1/2 initially failed an unchanged mocked Antigravity login fixture; its focused case passed locally, then one unchanged job retry passed 131 files/1995 tests, including all 11 Antigravity tests. The initial failed attempt remains recorded in CI. Initial local attempts exposed the host SysV semaphore limit and corrected harness path, IPC readiness, and queue-counter defects. A temporary test loader selected an existing POSIX-semaphore PostgreSQL 18.6 build without changing repository dependencies. An optional expanded debug provider run was interrupted at its unrelated 8192-turn rollover stress case; no full-file local pass is claimed. Required failure cases were run directly, and the full Runner CI remains required. ## Risks - The guarantee covers built-in native remote Runner execution. Local native execution, legacy adapters, external Dot/Muse execution, and server-originated model calls retain their existing contracts. - This does not provide traffic switching or general web-server failover. The existing controller identity, checkpoint, and generation gates still apply. - The receipt JSON gains optional structured producer facts. No schema migration or accounting S3 spool is added. Text output and raw trace payloads are excluded. - Codex accounting authority requires a Runner artifact built from this provider baseline implementation and qualified by digest. Update receivers and strict usage-schema readers before releasing that Runner; PRP does not negotiate this payload field. Existing unmarked Codex reports remain pending/unpriced. No deployed Runner artifact is claimed fixed. - Usage arriving beyond the bounded terminal tail may require manual reconciliation or a fresh session. Its evidence remains in the existing producer checkpoint/outbox; no adjustment ledger or recurring scan is added. ## Model Used OpenAI `gpt-6.1-sol` assisted with the implementation, tests, and documentation through code execution and repository tools. The context window size is unavailable. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
feat(server): persist run logs and provider traces in S3 (#18327)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Operators use run logs and restricted provider traces to inspect agent work. > - Local log and trace files depend on the web server's persistent volume. > - That dependency prevents overlapping volume-backed Railway deployments. > - This PR reuses the instance S3 store for batched log and trace payloads with conditional publication. > - Existing Postgres rows retain their contracts; native export recovery reuses events already committed before Runner acknowledgement. > - S3-configured servers automatically copy and verify retained history before a later deployment cutover. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Server run logs, restricted provider traces, storage providers, and migration tooling. **Problem or motivation** Replacing the web server and its disk must preserve committed log output and retained traces. The current S3 mirror can repeatedly upload a growing file. Moving those payloads into Postgres would add database writes, WAL, replication, and backup work. **Proposed solution** Reuse the existing instance storage configuration, S3-compatible provider and credential chain. Store new run logs under run-logs/ and opted-in raw traces under provider-traces/, below the existing prefix. Cloud keeps its existing bucket and bucket-scoped credentials per stack. Add no new configuration switches. Store immutable payload segments and bounded binary range indexes directly in S3. Publish each batch with an ETag-conditional head. Keep existing database ownership and lifecycle records. Recover canonical native exports from their existing validated control event source, checkpointing export progress in S3. Add no new payload writes to Postgres. Preserve local defaults and migrate settled history with verified byte counts and digests. **Alternatives considered** Postgres payload chunks add control-plane load. Repeated whole-file mirrors amplify transfer work. The first index prototype left superseded index nodes; the final binary index keeps all normally published nodes reachable. **Roadmap alignment** This is a storage prerequisite for replacing the main web/API server. It does not enable deployment overlap, detach a volume, or change native Runner protocol acknowledgements. The maintainer approved this implementation scope. ROADMAP.md has no duplicate implementation item. Related PR: #16770 improves the existing in-flight mirror. This PR preserves that legacy backend and uses the existing instance S3 profile for new journals. ## What Changed - Automatically select S3 segments for new logs and opted-in traces when instance file storage uses S3. Reuse bucket, endpoint, region, prefix, path style and credentials. Remove separate backend switches. Keep local-disk instances local. - Share the existing storage configuration resolver with product files. Preserve config-file settings, environment precedence and the existing root prefix. Keep pre-existing run-log mirror settings for legacy history. - Add bounded buffering, conditional ownership fencing, immutable range reads, stable byte offsets, and completion hashing. - Dispatch all existing log consumers through the recorded backend. Coalesce output progress writes and publish live log messages after storage receipts. - Recover interrupted canonical native exports from their existing durable source. Exclude separate credential, cleanup, and reprojection records. Replay missing callback ranges and deduplicate late delivery. Repair settled archives after controller lease expiry. Bound shared repair work and stop it when all readers cancel. Serve the published prefix when best-effort repair fails. - Add encrypted optional trace channels, replacement reads, durable deletion tombstones, and deadline-driven local/external expiry cleanup independently of heartbeat scheduling. Stream historical source and remote verification. Propagate worker cancellation through trace open, conditional-write probing, upload, restore and reads. Fence deletion even before the first object head exists; abort and drain owned captures. - Retry transient storage errors, distinguish 409 from failed preconditions, and backpressure bounded log admission. Track interrupted trace imports explicitly so ordinary local deletion stays independent of S3. - Automatically migrate retained history through the existing delivery coordinator. Process one log and one trace per batch. Retry unresolved history with backoff and stop scans after completion. Keep the inventory/import command as optional diagnosis and repair. Verify source and remote bytes before switching references. Verify finalized native size and digest before setting its export cursor. Require ordered source coverage when completeness metadata is missing. Preserve original trace expiry. Block active, missing, corrupt, and unproven sources. - Preserve identity and run-secret redaction in live and recovered native logs. Register runtime log redaction secrets once through the existing encrypted registry. Keep agent private keys in their existing owner. - Add storage, migration, retention, UTF-8, and route-privacy coverage, plus operating documentation and qualification tooling. - Add no schema, payload table, per-record SQL, production dependency, or lockfile change. ## Verification - Final fixes at `b3a44c898e` passed all 116 selected startup, retention, attribution and cancellation controls. The disabled-scheduler cleanup and concurrent-repair defects reproduced red before the fixes. A timed-out repair still prevents later storage reads. - The merged source passed 124 storage and real-Postgres Cloud configuration tests. These include automatic history migration, existing environment/file vault keys, source-directory removal, five real-SDK stalled-request cancellation cases, shared capability-probe cancellation and multi-chunk trace ordering. Saved Cloud S3 settings work after the legacy config file is gone. - Workspace typecheck and full build passed at the merged parent `19f702d780`. Server typecheck and build passed again at `b3a44c898e`. - Actual app acceptance: finish a process-agent run through the normal API, stage its retained local-file input, then restart. Automatic migration reports one migrated item and zero blockers. Remove the original web home and restart at `b3a44c898e` with an empty home, the existing S3 profile and the existing vault key file. The normal log API preserves all five producer lines and exactly 788 bytes, with SHA-256 `74d9ae469da28bfe89b9b50a0e132aec24fe9e6d686496ed5e4ffa6167151036`. No log-specific storage settings are present. - Actual expiry acceptance: with heartbeat scheduling disabled, a trace remains unexpired after startup and later reaches its fixture deadline. The worker marks the row deleted and tombstones both S3 channel heads. The retained run log stays byte-identical. The process fixture emits no provider protocol frames, so nonempty encrypted payloads are qualified separately through the real SDK round trips. - Isolation tests use identical run identities in two stack buckets. Cleanup in one existing prefix leaves another prefix, another company and product files intact. Read-only Cloud source inspection confirms a bucket and bucket-scoped credentials per stack. Four existing Cloud storage environment-contract tests passed. No Cloud provisioning changed and no new live vendor permission probe was performed. - Earlier qualification passed 1,014 affected storage/native tests and 27 privacy-route tests with isolated Docker Postgres. An abrupt process test commits 1,000 records, receives receipts, dies by SIGKILL and loses its directory; another process reads every byte and continues. The real Rust Runner experiment acknowledges 32 records while the export cursor is zero, then continues the same Runner PID after controller loss. All 64 records export once with exactly 64 existing control rows. Repeated snapshot/Stop commands completed in 162/81 ms. - Emulator workload: 1,000 burst records used two batch PUTs. Eight steady streams produced 240 records with 104 conditional PUTs and 72 GETs over 6.9 seconds. These are synthetic operation counts, not fleet sizing or provider prices. - Failure evidence is retained. Compact native events over 64 KiB, missing file-key support, disabled-scheduler retention and repair failure handling all reproduced before their fixes. Fixture repairs addressed cold module setup, localhost/IPC permissions, the S3 bucket-name limit and a mode-0700 crash-test directory. Full local `pnpm test:run` was stopped after host PostgreSQL semaphore exhaustion; affected suites used isolated Docker databases instead. Native package library symlinks were restored with the package's standard hydration helper. - The `19f702d780` browser session-recovery case timed out while saving a task title. All eight browser shards passed on `b3a44c898e`, including that case, with no UI behavior or assertion change. Fresh-head CI passed at `b3a44c898e`: 55 successful checks, three skipped checks and one neutral check. The branch is conflict-free. - Map and module-boundary checks passed. Current-head Greptile is 5/5 with zero unresolved review threads. Reproduce the opt-in storage suites with `PAPERCLIP_LOG_TEST_S3_ENDPOINT` and a dedicated `PAPERCLIP_RUN_EVIDENCE_MIGRATION_DATABASE_URL` ending in `_test`. See `doc/run-evidence-storage.md` for operating limits, automatic migration, optional diagnostics and rollout qualification. ## Risks - Keep the existing per-stack bucket, prefix and vault key stable across replacements. Relocating that storage is a separate whole-instance operation. - This release automatically changes new log storage for existing S3-configured instances. Local-disk instances remain local. Canonical native source replay is qualified with a deterministic real Runner; actual remote execution and production-provider qualification remain rollout gates. Generic server-only diagnostics and optional raw trace tails without a surviving source can be incomplete after a crash. This does not establish full zero-downtime deployment. - Before deploying this release, qualify the actual S3 provider. It must enforce conditional writes and pass read, version, deletion, workload, and latency qualification. A capability probe rejects providers which ignore preconditions. Moto is emulator evidence only. - Dirty output is bounded and unconfirmed until S3 publication. Storage failure leaves persistence incomplete while task results and usage can settle. - Trace expiry is not yet represented by Cloud's external wake contract. Outstanding trace deadlines conservatively block sleep. - Automatic history copying requires the original source volume. Keep it until all retained resources pass verified import and clean-filesystem reads. Stop old binaries from creating new local-file runs. Missing or corrupt history remains blocked and visible in server logs. Rollback requires a compatible reader against the same external state. Ordinary object deletion does not erase retained historical object versions or backups. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, `gpt-6.1-sol`, with reasoning, tool use, code execution, and browser verification. perf: avoid scanning unused provider pack trees during archive upload (#18340)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Native agents need verified provider files in remote sandboxes. > - A fresh sandbox can need the bundled provider-pack archive. > - The upload path also hashes the expanded controller tree, which it does not upload. > - That synchronous scan blocks the server event loop and delays other requests. > - This change verifies the archive source and the installed pack, and keeps source-tree checks for directory uploads. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** Provider-pack archive fallback scans and hashes the full expanded controller tree before reading the build archive. The archive is the source sent to the sandbox. The extra scan blocks the Node event loop for several seconds. An overlapping asynchronous operation can then appear to take as long as that scan. **Expected behavior** Verify the bytes used by the selected upload path. Keep full verification of the installed pack against the selected manifest before a provider can use it. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Use a packaged provider pack with a build archive. 2. Start a remote native run whose sandbox needs that pack. 3. Inspect `provider_pack.archive.verify` and event-loop delay on the controller. Related: #18308 adds timing detail for workspace preparation. A search found no duplicate archive-verification fix. ## What Changed - Use the verified archive without scanning the unused expanded directory. - Keep full directory verification when no archive exists or the remote lacks archive support. - Keep archive digest checks and full verification of installed bytes. - Add `provider_pack.directory.verify` for directory fallback. - Add regression cases for both archive formats, fallback, and final verification failure. ## Verification - Both archive regressions failed before the change and passed after it. - 80 focused archive, selection, and verification cases pass on the rebased branch. - 20 native manifest and admission cases pass. - Server typecheck, server build, and the runtime bundle pass. - A disposable sandbox from the recorded image exercised the real uploader and full installed-pack verifier. It accepted the unchanged build bytes and rejected an altered proxy file. No model was called. The sandbox was deleted and its absence was verified. - A local baseline/archive/archive/baseline probe used the same unchanged public build pack. Preparation took 30.673 s, 84 ms, 106 ms, and 5.371 s. The slow baseline outlier is retained. This measures one controller phase; it does not establish a whole-turn or hosted speedup. ## Risks The archive path no longer checks expanded files that it does not send. Archive checks still fail closed, and the installed files must pass the same full manifest verification. Directory fallback keeps its source-tree check. Installs without archives retain that synchronous scan. The local sandbox probe tests upload and installed-content checks; it does not qualify admission of an older pack by a newer controller. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with tool use and local code execution. The exact runtime model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(runner): attest upstream releases and bind ACPX uniformly for every harness (#18325)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Native ACPX runs admit a provider only when its saved profile and `commandDigest` match the current profile exactly. > - For Copilot, Grok and Pi, `commandDigest` hashed dozens of Paperclip source files. Claude, Codex, Cursor and Antigravity hash only their upstream release. > - Any change to a bound source therefore advanced these profiles. #18212 alone moved Copilot from v88 to v91 and Grok from v15 to v19. Each bump reset in-flight sessions and added immutable identity fixtures (about 160 on master). > - #18237 added the provider pack `contractDigest`, which now guards Runner source compatibility at the pack boundary. > - This pull request changes the Copilot, Grok and Pi digests to upstream release attestations, as the other providers already use. > - It also binds the shared ACPX layer the same way for every ACPX harness: the profile's `acpxVersion` and the pack `contractDigest`, which now covers the Runner's ACPX patch. > - The benefit is that Runner source changes no longer reset these sessions or need new profile versions and fixtures. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18237, #18212, #17972. **What happened?** A Runner change that touched a bound source file changed the Copilot, Grok or Pi `commandDigest`. The author had to advance the profile version, regenerate an identity fixture and keep every old fixture. On deploy, saved sessions for that provider failed the exact admission check and started fresh. **Expected behavior** A provider's `commandDigest` changes only when its upstream release changes: an upstream version, a platform closure, the ACPX patch or the Grok launcher. Runner source compatibility is the job of the pack `contractDigest`. **Steps to reproduce** 1. On master, change a comment in `src/drivers/acpx/runtime-host.ts`. 2. Run `node packages/paperclip-runner/scripts/grok-profile-identity.mjs --check`. 3. The check fails. The Grok profile must advance, and the next deploy resets Grok sessions. ## What Changed - Add `packages/paperclip-runner/scripts/acpx-release-attestations.mjs`. It computes the release attestation for each provider: - Copilot and Pi: a canonical-JSON hash of the profile version, upstream package versions and the platform closure pins (Pi also binds its Node version). - Grok: the SHA-256 of `launcher.cjs`. Admission already hashes these bytes. - The attestation binds no Paperclip source, shared ACPX layer, absolute path, pack manifest digest or install layout. - Bind the shared ACPX layer once for every ACPX harness (Claude, Codex, Copilot, Cursor, Grok, Pi, Antigravity): - Add the Runner's ACPX patch (`patches/acpx@<runner acpx version>.patch`) to the pack `contractDigest`. A patch change now retires older image packs for every harness. Other packages' ACPX patches are not read. A build context without the Runner's patch fails. - Remove the ACPX patch hash from Cursor's release declaration (`cursor-contract.json`) and advance Cursor once to profile 17. Copilot, Pi and Cursor no longer bind ACPX in their own digests, like Claude, Codex, Grok and Antigravity. - Saved inputs for every harness already must match the current `acpxVersion`. - Claude and Codex digests do not change. - `generate-acpx-profiles.mjs` writes these digests to `acpx-profiles.json`. `check:acpx-profiles` refuses a stale digest. - Move the Copilot closure pins to `copilot-closure-pins.ts`, so that the generator can import them. `copilot-installation.ts` re-exports them. - Advance each profile once and then freeze it: Copilot 92, Grok 20, Pi 37. A version change at the switch keeps the rollout on the same path as every earlier profile bump. - Replace the historical version lists in `profile-compatibility.ts` with a range. Every revision from 1 through the current one decodes. Claude and Codex still decode revisions 1 through 5. Launch and recovery admission still require the exact current profile and digest. - Delete: - `scripts/copilot-profile-identity.mjs`, `scripts/grok-profile-identity.mjs` and its test - the Grok launcher source stamp - 159 Copilot, Grok and Pi identity fixtures, including three unreferenced `copilot-mainline-v*` fixtures. The Cursor fixtures stay. - Rewrite the affected tests as behaviour checks: - Each provider admits only the exact current profile. Every earlier version decodes and is refused at admission. - The last source-bound digests, and a changed digest at the current version, are refused by recovery and by the backend factory. - The Rust Pi descriptor test uses the generated profile instead of fixtures. - New `acpx-release-attestations.test.mjs`: a relocated copy of the inputs gives the same digests, each upstream input changes only its own providers, and the generator refreshes and checks the manifest. - Remove the fixture exceptions from `.dockerignore`. Add the attestation script and the generator to the Daytona image content inputs. - Update the Pi install probe and the Rust integration constant for the new Pi digest. - Update the docs to describe the current attestation model: `doc/grok-native-runner.md`, `doc/RUNNER-INTEGRATION-PLAYBOOK.md`, `doc/observability.md`, `packages/paperclip-runner/docs/durable-recovery.md`, and the Copilot, Pi and rich ACP architecture reports. Each report now opens with the current profile identity; earlier source-bound profiles remain as dated chronology. No doc references a deleted file. ## Verification - In `packages/paperclip-runner`: - `node --test scripts/acpx-release-attestations.test.mjs scripts/contracts/contract-fingerprints.test.mjs`: 19 tests pass, including a Runner ACPX patch edit that changes the contract digest, other patch edits (including `acpx@0.12.0` for `adapter-utils`) that do not, and a build context without the patch that fails. - `node scripts/generate-acpx-profiles.mjs --check` passes. - `vitest run src/drivers/acpx src/backends src/contracts`: 1647 tests pass, 9 skipped. - `tsc -p tsconfig.json --noEmit` passes. - From the repository root, `vitest run --config tests/runner-e2e/vitest.config.ts tests/runner-e2e/daytona-image.test.ts`: 11 tests pass. - In `server`, the 8 test files that use ACPX profiles, pack digests or `contractDigest`: 1617 tests pass. - Not run locally: the Rust tests and `cargo fmt`, because this machine has no Rust toolchain. CI runs them. - Before this change, a synthetic upgrade check built two Runner revisions that differ only in shared source. A Claude checkpoint saved under the first revision rebinds under the second, and a changed Claude `commandDigest` starts fresh. This confirms that the provider JSON has no other build-dependent field. ## Risks - **One reset at rollout.** The Copilot, Grok, Pi and Cursor digests and versions change once. Saved sessions for these providers start fresh on their next run, as after any earlier profile bump. After this change, Runner source changes no longer cause this reset. - **Lost "source changed, so requalify" signal.** The old digest forced a new profile version when bound source changed. Nothing enforced requalification: Copilot was last qualified at v47. Pack-boundary contract changes are now caught by the pack `contractDigest`. - **Image packs are retired once for every provider.** Adding the ACPX patch changes the pack `contractDigest`, so the controller uploads its bundled pack (about 16 s per remote start) until images are refreshed. Claude and Codex sessions are not reset: their digests and versions do not change. - **Grok launcher and closure pins.** The Grok digest covers only the launcher bytes. Grok's runtime version is still checked separately at admission, as before. - **Grok digest equals early Grok profiles.** The launcher bytes have not changed since profile 1, so the new Grok digest equals the published profile 1 digest. The profile version still separates them: launch, recovery and the backend factory require profile 20. An image pack from that period has no `contractDigest`, so the pack gate refuses it. `remote-provider-pack-verification.test.ts` now covers this case. - **Docker context checks** run `generate-acpx-profiles.mjs --check`, which now imports `.ts` pin files through Node type stripping. `materialize-pi-distribution.mjs` already relies on this on Node 24. ## Model Used - Claude Opus 5.5 (`claude-opus-5-5`) in Claude Code, with tool use (shell, file edits, local test runs). ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |
fix(native): use the deadline for remote health retries (#18324)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agent work and its execution state. > - Remote Runner processes use health reads to check their saved process identity. > - A failed health request cannot prove that the process stopped. > - Three fast gateway errors can exhaust the old retry limit in half a second. > - The caller already gives these reads a shared 30-second recovery budget. > - This pull request uses that budget with backoff for read-only failures. > - A short gateway outage can then clear without stopping the existing turn. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A transient HTTP 502 during sandbox process supervision caused an active native Codex turn to fail. The probe stopped after three attempts, even when most of its 30-second budget remained. The run reported `notification_transport_failed` and required workspace recovery. **Expected behavior** Retry read-only transport failures within the existing deadline. Keep process identity conflicts authoritative. Do not repeat a signal after a lost acknowledgement. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Start a read-only process verification with a 30-second deadline. 2. Return HTTP 502 from its first three transport reads, then allow the next read to succeed. 3. The old helper rejects after three reads. The fixed helper returns the successful observation. Related repairs: #16451 introduced bounded remote probes. #16835 and #17799 require proof of process exit before replacement. This change retains those guards. ## What Changed - Use the existing absolute deadline instead of a three-attempt limit for read-only probe failures. - Back off from 250 milliseconds to two seconds. Clip each request to ten seconds or the remaining budget. - Preserve the original error and diagnostic when the deadline is exhausted. Reject non-finite deadlines before an RPC. - Add a red/green regression and a repeated-gateway-failure case around a real listening process. - Update execution semantics and both recovery maps. ## Verification - Before the fix: the new probe suite failed two behavioral assertions. The gateway case returned its HTTP 502 error instead of the later successful observation. - After the fix: 75 focused probe, diagnostic, process-supervision and adoption tests pass. The diagnostic failure tests use a controlled clock for their full 30-second budget. Their error and redaction assertions stay unchanged. - Map alignment and module-boundary checks pass. - Full workspace typecheck and build pass at final commit `ddd42f66378ebc36ec1d7e0ca1f45943473561b3`. - The broader affected suite against disposable PostgreSQL passed 994 of 997 tests; its three startup/database timeouts passed unchanged in isolation. The initial full default local run encountered embedded PostgreSQL startup failures and did not complete. The four diagnostic tests that assumed the old short retry timing now use a controlled clock without weakening their assertions. - Incident evidence came from Linux AMD64, Node 24.22.2, Core commit `0c70cedce9a803bdc201324528abb35e423e7cd0`, native Codex `gpt-6.1-sol`, and a shared ChatGPT subscription. Two separate runs recorded the same supervision HTTP 502 within one second. - A disposable live Daytona sandbox check passed on Linux x86_64 and Node 24.22.1. Three injected gateway failures recovered in 3.31 seconds on production source from `e54a355fa179022caaa6854302ff56bd85de0229` (unchanged by the final test-only commit). The real Node listening process had one launch, retained its exact identity and saved file across a second read, and produced a confirmed Stop receipt. Sandbox deletion succeeded. This is process-supervision integration evidence, not a Codex task or model execution. - Fixed-revision hosted acceptance and recovery of the original conversation require rollout. This PR does not claim either. The duration of the original provider outage remains unknown. - Final commit `ddd42f66378ebc36ec1d7e0ca1f45943473561b3`: required `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e` checks pass; Greptile is 5/5 with no inline findings. The separate Paperclip Review service has not completed an assessment and remains queued. It is not a required branch check. ## Risks - Persistent fast transport failures cause more read-only requests within the same deadline. Capped backoff limits their rate. - Missing or changed identity still returns immediately. Failed health reads still cannot authorize replacement, process signals, or provider replay. - Signal requests still have one attempt. The timeout budget and execution permissions do not change. - No schema or package changes. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-6, through Codex, with reasoning, repository inspection, and shell tool use. The exact deployment model ID and context-window size are not exposed by this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
fix(runner): paginate native task searches without hidden truncation (#18282)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Native agents search tasks to find work that already exists. > - The search schema permits 200 results, but the server returns at most 100. > - The response does not tell the agent that more results exist. > - This pull request adds pages and reports the page size and continuation cursor. > - Agents can read the full accessible inventory before they decide that a task does not exist. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A native `search_tasks` request with `limit: 200` returns only 100 tasks. Historical scans recovered 167 and 173 tasks with status partitions. This proves missing inventory and extra work. It does not prove duplicate task creation. **Expected behavior** Honor the declared limit. Report more results and give the caller a continuation cursor. **Steps to reproduce** Create 205 matching tasks in a test company. Call `search_tasks` with `limit: 200`. The baseline returns 100. The fixed path returns 200, then five when the caller uses `nextCursor`. **Paperclip version or commit** Baseline: `81ebe479e8db8a3d59c86cdfb894bd917734492f`. Related changes: #16979 changes UI status filters before pagination. #13699 adds public task URLs. Neither repairs this native limit. An exact `search_tasks` plus pagination PR search returned no result. Pattern: [Task searches omit cases beyond the first hundred](https://www.braintrust.dev/app/Paperclip/p/Paperclip%20Staging/patterns/c20462d6-05fd-4862-bfbd-7bec1f2bc159). ### Hypothesis and thesis for a fix The native authority uses `boundedLimit` with its default maximum of 100. The tool schema permits 200. The response contains only `tasks`. The raw request and result counts agree with this cause. Fix the native authority and its canonical tool contract. Keep the existing `tasks` field. Add `limit`, `returnedCount`, `hasMore` and `nextCursor`. Use ascending task IDs so task activity does not move results between pages. Apply current company, privacy and Muse read checks before each page. A cursor grants no access. Callers must keep the same filters and read every page. Concurrent task changes require a fresh scan. ## What Changed - Honor the native search limit of 1 to 200, with a default of 50. - Add ID cursor pagination and page metadata. - Describe complete inventory reads in the tool contract and access map. - Refresh the generated semantic contracts and seeded catalog identity. - Add regression coverage for complete inventories and access-filtered pages. ## Verification - Red: the database integration test requested 200 of 205 persisted tasks. Baseline returned 100. - Green: the same regression returns pages of 200 and five without duplicate IDs. - The native authority and Muse suites cover company exclusion, status filters, empty pages, invalid cursors and readable-only metadata. - Command: `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/services/native-runtime/paperclip-runner-tool-authority.test.ts src/services/native-runtime/muse-native-visibility.test.ts`. - The test uses the real run-bound native authority and disposable PostgreSQL. It does not use an external model or change a deployed scanner. - Both native authority and Muse suites pass: 71 tests. Server direct `tsc --noEmit`, Runner `typecheck:typescript`, `node scripts/check-maps.mjs` and generated semantic contract checks pass. - Full typecheck and build cannot finish here because `cargo` is absent. The full local test command was stopped after about five minutes when the complete CI matrix was running. It has no complete verdict. Current-head CI passed, including typecheck, build, all general/serialized/Runner test suites and E2E. Greptile is 5/5 with no actionable findings at `392cb7424a1fa0ec73401d5e8a10a22b504fde32`. Optional Storybook and manual Docker workflows were skipped and are not executed coverage. The success-example correction also passed all 82 contract tests locally. ## Risks Task order changes to ascending ID. Pagination is not a snapshot. New or changed tasks can require a fresh scan. Each page retains the existing full company-list read and Muse authorization cost. This change adds no database query loop or new background work. Existing callers can still read `tasks`, but must follow `nextCursor` for a complete inventory. No scanner implementation was supplied. No migration or deployment is included. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with tool use and code execution. The exact provider deployment ID and context limit are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [ ] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge The task requires the supplied branch to stay unchanged.
