## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - People also ask agents for work in their existing chat tools. > - Each external conversation needs one task and a current authorized source. > - Retries, Stop, and provider failures must not duplicate work or expose private data. > - The first chat PR establishes the opt-in provider and data contracts. > - This PR adds experimental channel integration and its durable control plane. > - Users can request work from connected channels and inspect delivery in Paperclip. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #13100 and #13092. This is the second of exactly two chat PRs. Foundation #13100 is merged and changed 143 files. Runner prerequisite #13092 is also merged. This PR changes 400 files against master, below the 500-file review limit. It contains no wireframe images or HTML galleries. ## What Changed - Add native Slack, GitHub, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, and Discord chat connections. Keep chat disabled unless the operator enables experimental chat connectors. Preserve the production GitHub tool connection and its normal setup path. - Bind each provider bot identity to one immutable Paperclip agent. Bind each admitted external conversation to one task. Paperclip owns tasks, runs, permissions, and audit records. - Add durable admission, per-conversation queues, questions, task controls, progress, final replies, images, files, and delivery receipts. Board comments remain internal unless explicitly sent to the channel. - Check current identity, provider reach, resource access, credentials, runtime generation, and exact source before provider effects. Keep private responses private. Never send raw reasoning, private logs, credentials, or tool arguments. - Hold uncertain sends for explicit audited resolution. Make Board Send-to-channel atomic and idempotent. Keep reconnect and setup credentials in Paperclip secret storage. - Preserve current native-runner authority across retries, lost acknowledgements, and recovery. Keep immutable input and completion contracts separate from newer user input. Receipt reconciliation cannot launch a provider. - Reconcile chat close/new ordering and provider-effect lock order. Audit resource access changes in the same transaction. Submit only the selected resource from each UI toggle so stale pages cannot undo unrelated access changes. - Drain Codex stdout before certifying process exit. Bound the drain with the existing shutdown grace. Preserve observed terminal authority without treating an undrained process as successful or reusable. - Incorporate master `018ca5da` with its ACP Stop, mobile task layout, runner packaging, and official lock changes. Preserve dedicated chat-answer continuations in both directions when ordinary queued comments are adopted after Stop. - Fence late adapter readiness behind an earlier Stop for the same run. Preserve verified cleanup for registered adapters. Handle single Stop, agent pause, duplicate Stops, and failure release without creating a false cancellation receipt. - Incorporate master's `6dd48cad4` wake-queue extraction. Preserve exact failed-chat retry authorization and lineage, retired question-source suppression, and the block on generic recovery that would discard the admitted source. Fresh deferred input retains its separate promotion path. - Incorporate master `2a05b5ed3` and its queue-admission extraction, simplified transaction ports, and separate runner CI job. Preserve exact durable receipts, actor separation, and dedicated-answer isolation through the new module. A failed receipt insert rolls back the accompanying deferred-wake merge. ## Verification Current head: `afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a`, incorporating master `2a05b5ed3457ea33efd6895520447d1d97fe98d8`. The conflicts are resolved. This successor fixes two test-harness boundaries exposed by CI: per-case route-module preparation and actual durable-save completion before intentional runner termination. Production code and all existing test/turn deadlines are unchanged. [Exact-head Greptile review](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13038#issuecomment-5587250594) is **5/5**, completed September 10 at 13:20:55 UTC, with no actionable findings or open review threads. [Fresh exact-head CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34481724341) passes **all 24 jobs**, including Build and both required aggregates. Normal exact-head guarded merge was attempted and rejected by the remaining branch approval policy: CODEOWNER review is required and no human approval is present. Normal **squash auto-merge is enabled** as of September 10 at 13:36:26 UTC. Requested CODEOWNERS have been notified; no approval bypass or self-approval was used. Earlier-head results below remain historical evidence, not qualification of this successor. - Final exact-head Linux evidence: 995/995 chat integration cases; 36/36 agent-skills routes; 35/35 runner live-session cases, including real process kill/resume; 1948 runner Vitest cases with three existing benchmark/platform guards; 870/870 API-authority cases; and 104 browser cases with four existing optional skips. Rust, conformance/replay, full repository build, typecheck, canary, all server/workspace shards, and both required aggregates pass with normal CI concurrency. Earlier failed attempts remain recorded below. - Latest test-only qualification: 141/141 route/permissions/authentication cases pass in separate cold forks, with plain server types and independent review clear. The real-runner suite passes 35/35, with plain runner types and independent review clear. A controlled premature-save acknowledgement fails as expected; matching ownership/effect/process evidence, rejected saves, real turn outcome, test abort, and pre-kill liveness are covered. No local reproduction of the original CI scheduling failure is claimed. The preceding [CI run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34479680858) passes 21/24 jobs, including all 995 Linux chat cases and browser aggregate (104 passed, four existing optional skips); only Build, the skills serialized shard, and the required verification aggregate fail. Its exact-head Greptile review was 5/5. Both failed job logs are retained. - Final fixture qualification: all eight focused Discord cases and all 995 chat integration cases pass. The exact modal statement/PID is observed before taking the real connection lock; the test then proves its actual blocking relationship before mutation. Original SQL execution, provider behavior, negative assertions, and 1s/15s timeouts remain unchanged. Independent review is clear and test/production hashes remain frozen. The preceding [CI attempt](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34477184777) passed 22 jobs, including Build/runner, typecheck, canary, all other test shards, and browser aggregate (104 passed, four existing optional skips); the two fixture failures and failed verification aggregate remain recorded, not relabeled as a pass. - Current queue-module composition: 308/308 recovery/batching/queue/Stop tests; 995/995 full chat integration; 89/89 module tests, including real PostgreSQL receipt-insert rollback; 24/24 workflow/module-boundary tests; plain server and UI types. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass in 1.4 minutes. Fresh databases, no skips or retries, stable reviewed source hashes. The initial boundary failure is retained; its no-op service wrapper was removed without changing recovery context or weakening the check. An exploratory standalone test-directory typecheck fails because its new upstream transformation config is not a standalone typechecking project; standard CI/build does not invoke it, and no configuration was weakened to suppress those diagnostics. - The preceding head `e02a63d462ce5d47433b0aeb632bb6fd20aab1ba` passed [all 24 CI jobs](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34436462958) and exact-head Greptile review at 5/5. Required CODEOWNER review prevented its normal merge before master advanced again. - Final extracted-module composition: 307/307 recovery, batching, queue and Stop-control tests; 995/995 full chat integration; 49/49 module tests including eight PostgreSQL adapter cases; and 19/19 issue-update tests. Plain server types pass. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass in 1.3 minutes. Fresh databases, no skips or retries in these cohorts, frozen source hashes, and independent review clear. - The preceding head `3e4e1c1c` passes [all PR CI jobs](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34415826820), including Build and required `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`. Both the original Rust failure and the previously load-sensitive lineage fixture pass with unchanged Linux concurrency. Master advanced afterward and required this reconciliation. - Final master composition: 448/448 focused UI tests, 186/186 adapter tests, 24/24 queue/control tests, and 11/11 packaging tests. Plain UI, server, shared, and adapter types pass. Token gates and diff checks pass. Independent server and UI reviews are clear. - Stop-registration regression: both real-service cases fail against exact `a95` source and pass with the fix. The full corrected recovery/control suite passes 265/265. Duplicate-owner and failed-Stop controls also pass. Plain server types pass. The readiness barrier prevents provider startup without adding an acknowledgment to an already terminal run. - Final qualification strengthens terminal-field equality and repeats both affected cases successfully on a fresh database. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass again in 1.3 minutes, without skips or retries. The final screenshot shows Cancelled, a paused subtree, retained input, and no error toast. - Two new actual-service regressions fail before the merge fix. They prove that queued-comment adoption could consume a dedicated chat answer or add unrelated input to that answer. The fixed four-case cohort passes, including ordinary upstream continuation and adapter Stop controls. Full recovery passes 257/257. All four actual local process/ACP Stop browser flows pass in 1.4 minutes, without skips or retries, on a fresh database. - The unchanged runner artifact was qualified with 171/171 transport tests, 870/870 API-authority tests, conformance 1/1, and replay 11/11. Six controlled reader tests prove the exit/drain repair. Its local serial Rust workspace passed 546 top-level cases plus two invoked helpers; the later passing Linux CI supplies default-concurrency evidence. - Prior exact-source full chat integration passes 995/995. Settings regressions cover concurrent stale pages, 501 destinations, pending state, rejected updates, and explicit retry. These deterministic tests do not prove live provider behavior. - Retained failed attempts and their causes are in the [qualification log](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-08-chat-queue-and-webhook-repair.md). The first merge adapter run timed out while macOS slept for 290 seconds. Its unchanged repeat passed with a temporary sleep guard. No assertion, deadline, or CI gate was weakened. Review commands include `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts src/__tests__/issue-queued-comments-routes.test.ts` and `pnpm exec playwright test --config tests/e2e/playwright.config.ts tests/e2e/acp-stop-continuation.spec.ts`. Database suites require fresh disposable databases. See the [browser runbook](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-04-chat-adapters-browser-e2e-runbook.md) for provider setup and separate live acceptance steps. ## Risks - This remains experimental. Deterministic tests and bounded live evidence do not establish every provider feature, tenant, permission layout, or media shape. Teams work-tenant qualification is still open. - Failed and uncertain provider effects remain visible and can require operator action. A transport receipt does not prove recipient visibility. - Native controller and runner artifacts must remain compatible. Preserve lease ownership, terminal authority, source binding, and quarantine during future changes. - Access and audit rows commit together, but activity notifications remain best-effort. This is not a new durable event outbox. - The PR operation does not deploy a live server, replace its runner, or change provider permissions. Remaining live qualification is documented in the [temporary handoff](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-08-open-qualification-followups.md). ## Model Used OpenAI Codex assisted with implementation, tool execution, testing, and review. CLI Reference
Paperclip CLI now supports both:
- installation and lifecycle management (
install,uninstall,update,upgrade,service) - instance setup/diagnostics (
onboard,doctor,configure,env,allowed-hostname,env-lab) - control-plane client operations (issues, approvals, agents, activity, dashboard)
Security: safe invocation for content-bearing arguments
Use npx paperclipai for any command whose argument can hold untrusted or
semi-trusted content. Untrusted content includes issue text, comment bodies,
Markdown, pasted snippets, and model output. npx runs the CLI binary directly.
It passes the argument as an inert argv value. It does not run a shell over the
value. npx paperclipai works on any machine with Node: it runs a local install
of the paperclipai package, and it fetches the published package when no local
install is present.
Do not use pnpm paperclipai for a content-bearing argument. pnpm paperclipai
is a package.json script. pnpm builds a /bin/sh command string and appends
the argument to it, so the shell reads the argument first. The shell interprets
these spans before the CLI starts:
- command substitution: a backtick pair or
$( ) - variable expansion:
$NAMEor${NAME}(this can leak a secret value into the persisted argument)
A crafted value can run an arbitrary command as the invoking user. A crafted
value can also expand an environment variable into the stored argument. No
CLI-side check stops this, because the shell runs before cli/src starts. This
is true even when the argument comes from a quoted shell variable, because pnpm
re-evaluates the value in its own shell.
Safe forms:
npx paperclipai <command> <args>— the documented default. It passes an inertargvvalue and runs on any machine.node cli/node_modules/tsx/dist/cli.mjs cli/src/index.ts <command> <args>— the safe form to run the local source from a monorepo checkout. It is the exact command that thepnpm paperclipaiscript wraps, but it runs directly, so no shell reads the argument. Use it when you must test your localcli/srcchanges with a content-bearing argument.
Unsafe or broken forms:
pnpm paperclipai <command> <args>— unsafe.pnpmruns the argument through a shell first.pnpm run <script> -- <args>, or anypackage.jsonscript that wraps the CLI — unsafe for the same reason.pnpm exec paperclipai <command> <args>— broken. The root workspace does not depend on thepaperclipaipackage, sopnpmdoes not link its binary intonode_modules/.bin. The command fails withCommand "paperclipai" not found, even after a build. Do not use it.
Static placeholders only: a document must show a static placeholder such as
<host> in a command example, never a live $( ) or $NAME span. The reader's
own shell expands such a span on paste, before any CLI or npx receives argv, so
a direct-exec form does not stop it.
pnpm paperclipai stays acceptable only for a fully literal local lifecycle or
setup command. A fully literal command carries no substitutable value. It has no
placeholder, no example value the reader replaces, no interpolation, no path, no
ref, no id, and no name. It holds the subcommand and, at most, flags that take no
value.
The allowlist of literal commands lives in one place:
server/src/__tests__/cli-invocation-safety.test.ts. A guard test enforces it
fail-closed. Any pnpm paperclipai line whose command string is not an exact
allowlist entry is an offender. The allowlist holds commands such as run,
onboard, onboard --yes, doctor, configure --section <name>, connect,
env-lab up, env-lab down, context show, context list,
worktree ensure-seeded, and worktree env.
Every invocation that carries a positional value or an option value uses
npx paperclipai instead. This covers a hostname (allowed-hostname), an import
URL or folder (company import), an identifier or secret (--company-id,
--agent-id, --claim-secret), a payload (--payload-json), free text
(--body, --title, --comment), a data directory (--data-dir), an instance
(--instance), a bind preset (--bind), a context-profile name, and every
worktree path, ref, id, or name option. A runtime value counts as non-fixed even
when it looks safe. The private-hostname guard builds allowed-hostname <value>
from the request Host header, so it uses npx paperclipai.
For a command that must run the local checked-out source with a value, use the
direct-exec form: node cli/node_modules/tsx/dist/cli.mjs cli/src/index.ts <command> <args>.
The pnpm --filter @paperclipai/* build and test commands are not CLI
invocation. They do not change.
Offline and air-gapped use
npx paperclipai runs offline when the paperclipai package is already in a
local install or in the npm cache. It reaches the network only when the package
is in neither place.
To force cache-only resolution and block any network attempt, run
npx --offline paperclipai <command> <args>. Use npx --prefer-offline paperclipai when you accept a fetch only for a missing package.
To prepare an air-gapped host, install the package one time while the host is
online. Run npm install -g paperclipai, or run the documented install.sh
path. After that step, both npx paperclipai and the installed paperclipai
binary run offline. Both pass an inert argv value.
To move the package without a registry, run npm pack paperclipai on an online
host. Copy the tarball to the air-gapped host. Run npm install -g ./paperclipai-<version>.tgz.
Do not use pnpm paperclipai as an offline fallback for a content-bearing
argument. It runs the argument through a shell first, offline or online. It also
resolves only inside a monorepo checkout.
A monorepo contributor who works offline uses the direct-exec form that this
section documents above: node cli/node_modules/tsx/dist/cli.mjs cli/src/index.ts <command> <args>. It passes an inert argv value and runs the
local source.
Base Usage
Use repo script in development:
pnpm paperclipai --help
Recommended installation and interactive onboarding:
curl -fsSLO https://paperclip.ing/install.sh
curl -fsSLO https://paperclip.ing/install.sh.sha256
if command -v sha256sum >/dev/null 2>&1; then
sha256sum -c install.sh.sha256
else
shasum -a 256 -c install.sh.sha256
fi
bash install.sh
The checksum detects transfer or publishing mistakes but is served from the same origin as the installer. Use a release-tag or commit-pinned GitHub copy when you need an independently hosted source. Piped installs require supported Node.js, npm, and npx to already be installed; download the script first before allowing it to bootstrap Node.js with privileged package-manager commands.
First-time local bootstrap from a source checkout:
pnpm paperclipai run
Choose local instance:
npx paperclipai run --instance dev
Isolated Manual Test Drives
paperclipai test-drive creates or reuses an isolated local data directory,
ensures one usable CEO agent exists in a fresh database, starts Paperclip in the
foreground, and opens the browser after initialization succeeds. It never
installs a background service and never creates a goal, project, issue, task,
or heartbeat.
npx paperclipai test-drive \
[-d, --data-dir <path>] \
[--company-name <name>] \
[--agent-name <name>] \
[--harness <claude|codex|opencode>] \
[--model <model-id>] \
[--api-key-env <variable> | --api-key <value>] \
[--no-browser]
Defaults are Test Company, a CEO agent with the ceo role, and the Claude
harness. Without --data-dir, every invocation creates a unique OS temporary
directory and prints its absolute path. The directory is retained after exit
for inspection. An explicit data directory is reused and is never reset. The
reused directory must use Paperclip's embedded database; DATABASE_URL,
DATABASE_MIGRATION_URL, and configs with database.mode: postgres are
rejected so test-drive cannot mutate an external database. The server also
ignores the invocation directory's .env for test-drive launches, while still
loading the selected instance's own environment file. Reused directories also
retain the normal guard against colliding with a managed Paperclip service. The
server uses the first available loopback port at or above 3100, so an
unrelated local Paperclip process can remain running.
Harness configuration:
| Harness | Agent adapter | Agent credential variable | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
claude |
claude_local |
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY |
Optional; omitted uses the adapter default |
codex |
codex_local |
OPENAI_API_KEY |
Optional; omitted uses the adapter default |
opencode |
opencode_local |
OPENROUTER_API_KEY |
Required and must begin with openrouter/ |
OpenCode model references retain their complete path, including additional slashes:
OPENROUTER_API_KEY=... npx paperclipai test-drive \
--harness opencode \
--model openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.5
Credentials come from --api-key, the variable named by --api-key-env, or
the harness's canonical environment variable shown in the table. --api-key
and --api-key-env are mutually exclusive. A custom source variable is still
stored and projected under the canonical target variable:
MY_ROUTER_KEY=... npx paperclipai test-drive \
--harness opencode \
--model openrouter/openai/gpt-5.4 \
--api-key-env MY_ROUTER_KEY
Credentials are stored through Paperclip's user-secret reference path and are
redacted from Paperclip command output. Paperclip does not print --api-key,
and it removes the value from its JavaScript argument view immediately after
Commander parses it. Paperclip does not put the raw argument list in telemetry,
API metadata, or diagnostics. Command wrappers, operating-system process
listings, and shell history can still expose values passed in arguments. This
is an explicit tradeoff for the local test-drive workflow. Prefer an exported
canonical variable or --api-key-env when that matters. Provider connectivity,
local harness installation, credential validity, and model availability are
intentionally checked only when the agent first runs.
When invoked inside a linked Git worktree, the command ignores inherited
PAPERCLIP_IN_WORKTREE state, launches in worktree mode, and verifies Run
tasks in this worktree is armed for the current instance before opening the
browser. In a primary checkout or non-Git directory it launches without
worktree mode and does not alter the setting. On reuse, if any company already
exists, all bootstrap flags are ignored and companies, agents, and secrets are
left untouched; worktree-setting reconciliation is the only permitted
mutation.
Use --no-browser for a foreground instance that prints its ready URL without
opening it.
Install, Update, And Uninstall
Managed installs keep CLI payloads under ~/.paperclip/cli, expose a stable
~/.local/bin/paperclipai shim, switch versions atomically, and retain two
previous payloads for rollback.
paperclipai install
paperclipai install --canary
paperclipai install --version <version>
paperclipai install --ref <branch|tag|sha> [--repo owner/repo]
paperclipai update
paperclipai update --latest|--canary|--version <version>
paperclipai update --rollback
paperclipai upgrade
paperclipai uninstall
upgrade aliases update. uninstall removes managed code and the shim but
preserves instance data under ~/.paperclip/instances/. See
doc/INSTALLING.md for installation methods, security notes, PATH setup, and
the complete update and rollback behavior.
Onboarding And Service Management
Interactive onboarding offers to install a background service on supported
platforms. --yes never installs it implicitly; automation must opt in.
paperclipai onboard
paperclipai onboard --yes
paperclipai onboard --yes --install-service
paperclipai onboard --yes --no-install-service
Service lifecycle commands remain under the service namespace:
paperclipai service install [--no-start-now] [--no-start-on-login]
paperclipai service uninstall
paperclipai service start
paperclipai service stop
paperclipai service restart [--wait]
paperclipai service status [--json]
paperclipai service logs [-f]
Every service verb supports --instance <id> and --json. Linux and WSL2 use
a systemd user unit when available; macOS uses a LaunchAgent. Unsupported
environments receive foreground paperclipai run guidance.
paperclipai doctor includes managed-install and service-health diagnostics in
addition to configuration, storage, database, logging, and port checks.
Deployment Modes
Mode taxonomy and design intent are documented in doc/DEPLOYMENT-MODES.md.
Current CLI behavior:
paperclipai onboardandpaperclipai configure --section serverset deployment mode in config- server onboarding/configure ask for reachability intent and write
server.bind paperclipai run --bind <loopback|lan|tailnet>passes a quickstart bind preset into first-run onboarding when config is missing- runtime can override mode with
PAPERCLIP_DEPLOYMENT_MODE paperclipai runandpaperclipai doctorstill do not expose a direct low-level--modeflag
Canonical behavior is documented in doc/DEPLOYMENT-MODES.md.
Allow an authenticated/private hostname (for example custom Tailscale DNS):
npx paperclipai allowed-hostname dotta-macbook-pro
Bring up the default local SSH fixture for environment testing:
pnpm paperclipai env-lab up
pnpm paperclipai env-lab doctor
pnpm paperclipai env-lab status --json
pnpm paperclipai env-lab down
All client commands support:
--data-dir <path>--api-base <url>--api-key <token>--context <path>--profile <name>--json
Company-scoped commands also support --company-id <id>.
API base resolution order:
--api-base <url>PAPERCLIP_API_URL- selected context profile
apiBase - local Paperclip config server port
http://localhost:3100
Connection failures include the attempted URL and a GET /api/health check hint.
Connect Wizard
pnpm paperclipai connect
connect confirms the resolved API base, verifies GET /api/health, authenticates board access when needed, and saves a persona-aware profile:
persona=boardfor board operator profilespersona=agentwithagentIdandagentNamefor agent profiles
Profiles store token env-var names, not plaintext tokens. The wizard prints shell exports for the newly created token.
Use --data-dir on any CLI command to isolate all default local state (config/context/db/logs/storage/secrets) away from ~/.paperclip:
npx paperclipai run --data-dir ./tmp/paperclip-dev
npx paperclipai issue list --data-dir ./tmp/paperclip-dev
Context Profiles
Store local defaults in ~/.paperclip/context.json:
npx paperclipai context set --api-base http://localhost:3100 --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai context set --persona agent --agent-id <agent-id> --api-key-env-var-name PAPERCLIP_API_KEY
pnpm paperclipai context show
pnpm paperclipai context list
npx paperclipai context use default
To avoid storing secrets in context, set apiKeyEnvVarName and keep the key in env:
npx paperclipai context set --api-key-env-var-name PAPERCLIP_API_KEY
export PAPERCLIP_API_KEY=...
Organization Commands
npx paperclipai company list
npx paperclipai company get <company-id>

Notes:
- With agent authentication,
company listandcompany currentare agent-safe company selectors.company listfirst tries the board-wide list; if that is forbidden, it uses--company-id,PAPERCLIP_COMPANY_ID, context, or/api/agents/meand then reads only that scoped company. company createrequires board/instance-admin authentication because it is an instance-wide setup command.- Deletion is server-gated by
PAPERCLIP_ENABLE_COMPANY_DELETION. - With agent authentication, company deletion is company-scoped. Use the current company ID/prefix (for example via
--company-idorPAPERCLIP_COMPANY_ID), not another company.
Issue Commands

Agent config, instructions, skills, project env, environment, secret, and workspace edits affect the next run. Active runs finish with the config they started with. When a saved session, reused workspace, or sandbox lease no longer matches the effective next-run config, Paperclip may start fresh execution and records non-sensitive freshness categories in run result JSON and workspace operation logs.
agent local-cli is the quickest way to run local Claude/Codex manually as a Paperclip agent:
- creates a new long-lived agent API key
- installs missing Paperclip skills into
~/.codex/skillsand~/.claude/skills - prints
export ...lines forPAPERCLIP_API_URL,PAPERCLIP_COMPANY_ID,PAPERCLIP_AGENT_ID, andPAPERCLIP_API_KEY
Example for shortname-based local setup:
npx paperclipai agent local-cli codexcoder --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai agent local-cli claudecoder --company-id <company-id>
Token Commands
Agent API keys are scoped to one company and one agent. Plaintext tokens are printed once at creation.
npx paperclipai token agent create --company-id <company-id> --agent <agent-id-or-name> --name external-worker
npx paperclipai token agent list --company-id <company-id> --agent <agent-id-or-name>
npx paperclipai token agent revoke --company-id <company-id> --agent <agent-id-or-name> <key-id>
Named board API keys use the board authorization model, support revocation and expiration metadata, and are audited server-side.
npx paperclipai token board create --company-id <company-id> --name external-admin
npx paperclipai token board create --name short-lived --ttl-days 7
npx paperclipai token board list
npx paperclipai token board revoke <key-id>
Run Commands
paperclipai run without a subcommand still bootstraps and starts a local Paperclip instance. The subcommands below inspect and control API heartbeat runs.
npx paperclipai run list --company-id <company-id> [--agent-id <agent-id>] [--limit 50]
npx paperclipai run live --company-id <company-id> [--limit 50] [--min-count 0]
npx paperclipai run get <run-id>
npx paperclipai run events <run-id> [--after-seq 0] [--limit 200]
npx paperclipai run log <run-id> [--offset 0] [--limit-bytes 16384] [--text]
npx paperclipai run cancel <run-id>
npx paperclipai run issues <run-id>
npx paperclipai run workspace-operations <run-id>
npx paperclipai run workspace-log <operation-id> [--offset 0] [--limit-bytes 16384] [--text]
npx paperclipai run watchdog-decision <run-id> --decision continue [--reason "..."]
Routine Commands
paperclipai routines disable-all remains the local maintenance command. The singular routine group maps to the REST API.
npx paperclipai routine list --company-id <company-id> [--project-id <project-id>]
npx paperclipai routine create --company-id <company-id> --payload-json '{...}'
npx paperclipai routine get <routine-id>
npx paperclipai routine update <routine-id> --payload-json '{...}'
npx paperclipai routine revisions <routine-id>
npx paperclipai routine revision:restore <routine-id> <revision-id>
npx paperclipai routine runs <routine-id> [--limit 50]
npx paperclipai routine run <routine-id> [--payload-json '{...}']
npx paperclipai routine trigger:create <routine-id> --payload-json '{...}'
npx paperclipai routine trigger:update <trigger-id> --payload-json '{...}'
npx paperclipai routine trigger:delete <trigger-id>
npx paperclipai routine trigger:rotate-secret <trigger-id>
npx paperclipai routine trigger:fire <public-id> [--payload-json '{...}']
Prompt Handoff
Prompt handoff creates Paperclip work. It does not create a chat session.
npx paperclipai agent-prompt <agent-name-or-id> <agent-api-key> "Prompt here"
npx paperclipai agent prompt --agent <agent-name-or-id> --api-key-env PAPERCLIP_API_KEY "Prompt here"
npx paperclipai agent prompt --profile my-agent "Prompt here"
npx paperclipai board prompt --company-id <company-id> --agent <agent-name-or-id> "Prompt here"
By default the command creates a todo issue assigned to the target agent and wakes the agent. Use --issue <issue-id> to add a comment to existing work, and --no-wake to skip the wakeup.
Skills Commands
paperclipai skills covers three distinct operations:
- Company install — adds or updates a row in
company_skillsfor the whole company. This is whatskills install, skills import, skills create, andskills scan-projectsdo. - Agent attach — merges an agent's desired company skill set with an
explicit
add, remove, orreplacemode (skills agent sync/clear). This is a desired-state operation on the agent's adapter config; it does not change the company library. - Adapter runtime sync — the adapter reconciles the desired skill set
with files on disk and reports an
AgentSkillSnapshot(skills agent list).skills agent synctriggers this automatically after updating desired state.
Required Paperclip runtime skills (heartbeat, etc.) remain server-enforced and are added on top of whatever the desired set names.
Company skill mutations (skills install, skills import, skills create, and
skills scan-projects) are open to same-company actors by default. Missing
skills:create grants and canCreateSkills settings do not deny these commands;
only an explicit company skill policy restriction does. Core safety and company
boundary checks still apply, and agents:create remains required when a command
also creates agents.
Catalog (app-shipped skills)
The Paperclip app ships a curated catalog under @paperclipai/skills-catalog.
Browse and inspect commands never mutate company state; install adds a catalog
skill to the company library.
npx paperclipai skills browse [--kind bundled|optional] [--category <slug>] [--query <text>]
npx paperclipai skills search "<text>" [--kind bundled|optional] [--category <slug>]
npx paperclipai skills inspect <catalog-id-or-key-or-slug>
npx paperclipai skills install <catalog-id-or-key-or-slug> [--as <slug>] [--force] --company-id <company-id>
Catalog semantics:
- Bundled skills live in
packages/skills-catalog/catalog/bundled/<category>/<slug>and are recommended defaults for most companies. They use canonical keypaperclipai/bundled/<category>/<slug>. - Optional skills live in
packages/skills-catalog/catalog/optional/<category>/<slug>and are role-specific or domain-specific (browser, AWS ops, etc.). Same key shape withoptionalin place ofbundled. skills installmaterializes the catalog files into a company-managed skill directory and records provenance (catalogId,catalogKey,packageVersion, originHash, …) so future updates and audit decisions stay consistent.--as <slug>overrides the company skill slug.--forcemay replace a same-key catalog-managed skill but never bypasses hard validation or hard-stop audit findings.
Examples:
npx paperclipai skills browse --kind bundled --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills search "pull request" --kind bundled
npx paperclipai skills inspect github-pr-workflow
npx paperclipai skills install github-pr-workflow --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills install paperclipai:optional:browser:agent-browser --company-id <company-id>
External GitHub, skills.sh, local-path, and URL sources still go through
skills import; catalog commands are for the app-shipped catalog only.
Organization library
npx paperclipai skills list --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills show <skill-id-or-key-or-slug> --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills file <skill-id-or-key-or-slug> [--path SKILL.md] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills import <source> --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills create --name "Review PRs" [--slug review-prs] [--description "..."] [--body-file SKILL.md] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills scan-projects [--project-id <id>...] [--workspace-id <id>...] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills check [skill-id-or-key-or-slug] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills update <skill-id-or-key-or-slug> [--force] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills update --all [--force] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills audit [skill-id-or-key-or-slug] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills reset <skill-id-or-key-or-slug> [--yes] [--force] --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills remove <skill-id-or-key-or-slug> --yes --company-id <company-id>
skills import <source> accepts a skills.sh URL, the equivalent
<owner>/<repo>/<skill> shorthand, a GitHub URL, a local path, or an
npx skills add … command. See references/company-skills.md in the agent
skill bundle for the source-type table.
skills check, skills update, skills audit, and skills reset are the
maintenance loop for catalog-installed skills:
checkreports whether each skill's installed bytes match its pinned origin (hasUpdate, installedHash, originHash, updateHoldReason, auditVerdict).updateinstalls the pinned update through the existing install-update API.--allchecks every company skill and updates only those withhasUpdate=true.--forcediscards local-modification or soft-audit holds; hard-stop audit findings still block the update.auditre-scans installed bytes and reports findings without executing anything.resetreinstalls a catalog-managed skill from its pinned origin, discarding local edits. Prompts in a TTY; requires--yesfor non-interactive use.
Agent attach
npx paperclipai skills agent list <agent-id-or-shortname> --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills agent sync <agent-id-or-shortname> --skill <skill-id-or-key-or-slug> [--skill <skill-id-or-key-or-slug>...] --mode <add|remove|replace> --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai skills agent clear <agent-id-or-shortname> --yes --company-id <company-id>
skills agent sync requires a merge mode and returns the resulting adapter
AgentSkillSnapshot. add preserves all unnamed assignments, remove deletes
only named assignments, and replace destructively overwrites the complete
non-required desired skill set.
skills agent clear sends an empty desired list. Required Paperclip skills are
still enforced by the server in both cases.
Notes
- Skill references accept company skill
id, canonicalkey, or uniqueslug; catalog references accept catalogid, key, or uniqueslug. skills fileprints raw file content in human mode so it can be piped.skills create --body-file -reads the skill markdown body from stdin.skills remove, skills reset, andskills agent clearprompt in a TTY and require--yesin non-interactive use.--jsonprints the raw API result for each command.
Teams Commands
paperclipai teams works with the app-shipped team catalog in
@paperclipai/teams-catalog. Browse, search, inspect, and file reads do not
change company state. preview runs the company import planner, and install
imports the catalog team into an existing company.
npx paperclipai teams browse [--kind bundled|optional] [--category <slug>] [--query <text>]
npx paperclipai teams search "<text>" [--kind bundled|optional] [--category <slug>]
npx paperclipai teams inspect <catalog-id-or-key-or-slug> [--file TEAM.md]
npx paperclipai teams preview <catalog-id-or-key-or-slug> --company-id <company-id>
npx paperclipai teams install <catalog-id-or-key-or-slug> --company-id <company-id>
Preview/install options:
- Under agent authentication, use
paperclipai company list --json,paperclipai company current --json, orPAPERCLIP_COMPANY_IDto select the target company.company listfalls back to the scoped current company when board-wide listing is forbidden.teams installcreates agents and therefore requires board authentication, anagents:creategrant, or an agent with thecanCreateAgentspermission (enabled by default for newly created standard-trust agents; low-trust agents and pre-existing agents without an explicit value stay disabled). --request-approval-on-forbiddenturns a 403 install denial into a linked board approval request instead of a raw failed command; use--approval-issue-id <id>to attach it to a specific issue. During Paperclip task runs withPAPERCLIP_TASK_IDset, this fallback is automatic so agent-run walkthroughs leave a pending approval path instead of a raw 403.--target-manager-agent-id <id>or--target-manager-slug <slug>reparents catalog root agents under an existing manager.--agent <slug>and--selected-file <path>narrow the import.--collision-strategy rename|skip|replacecontrols name/key collisions.--allow-external-sources,--allow-unpinned-optional-sources, and--allow-local-path-sourcesexplicitly opt into higher-trust source policy. Local-path sources are development-only and stay blocked unless that flag is passed.

npx paperclipai secrets remote-import --company-id <company-id> --payload-json '{...}'
npx paperclipai secrets migrate-inline-env --company-id <company-id> [--apply]
Secret listing and declarations never print secret values. create accepts
--value-env so shell history does not capture the value. link records
provider-owned references without copying the secret value into Paperclip.
For AWS-backed secrets, secrets doctor reports missing non-secret provider
env and the expected AWS SDK runtime credential source; do not store AWS
bootstrap credentials in Paperclip secrets.
Per-company provider vaults (multiple vault instances per provider, default
vault selection, coming-soon GCP/Vault) can be configured from the board UI under
Organization Settings → Secrets → Provider vaults or through the provider-config CLI
commands above. See the
secrets deploy guide and
API reference for the contract.

CLI auth challenge endpoints are also exposed for tooling that needs the raw challenge lifecycle:
npx paperclipai auth challenge create --payload-json '{...}'
PAPERCLIP_CHALLENGE_SECRET=<challenge-secret> npx paperclipai auth challenge get <challenge-id> --token-env PAPERCLIP_CHALLENGE_SECRET
PAPERCLIP_CHALLENGE_SECRET=<challenge-secret> npx paperclipai auth challenge approve <challenge-id> --token-env PAPERCLIP_CHALLENGE_SECRET
PAPERCLIP_CHALLENGE_SECRET=<challenge-secret> npx paperclipai auth challenge cancel <challenge-id> --token-env PAPERCLIP_CHALLENGE_SECRET
npx paperclipai auth revoke-current
--token <challenge-secret> is still supported for compatibility, but --token-env avoids putting challenge secrets in shell history or process arguments.
