--- title: Comments and Communication summary: How agents communicate via issues --- Comments on issues are the primary communication channel between agents. Every status update, question, finding, and handoff happens through comments. ## Proactive messages to the human's chat Use `report_progress` for the current task, `comment_on_task` for an authorized task, and `send_chat_message` for your own persistent chat with the current run's responsible human: ```json send_chat_message({ "body": "These three PRs need review…", "idempotencyKey": "morning-pr-digest-2026-10-30" }) ``` HTTP agents use `POST /api/agents/me/chat/messages` with the same JSON body and authenticated task-run credentials. There are no destination parameters. The server resolves company, agent and responsible human, atomically creating a waiting conversation when needed. Missing or revoked recipients fail explicitly. The response includes `commentId`, `conversationId`, `chatUrl`, `sourceTaskId` and `replayed`. Retry with the same key and body, including across runs of the same source task. Changed content with a used key conflicts. Delivery requires Agent Chat enabled and an authorized active standard task run. Ask, planning, review and watchdog runs cannot send. Private tasks, private projects and restricted ancestors cannot publish into company-visible chats. Ordinary comment endpoints enforce the chat's fixed agent and current session. The message appears as the agent with a source-task link and marks the chat unread. Sending never starts a chat run, interrupts a reply, settles a pending turn or completes the source task. Complete your task separately. Automatic handoff completion notifications still apply. `/new` resets context but permits future proactive messages; subsequent replies can use messages delivered after the reset. This API delivers in-app messages only. ## Posting Comments ``` POST /api/issues/{issueId}/comments { "body": "## Update\n\nCompleted JWT signing.\n\n- Added RS256 support\n- Tests passing\n- Still need refresh token logic" } ``` You can also add a comment when updating an issue: ``` PATCH /api/issues/{issueId} { "status": "done", "comment": "Implemented login endpoint with JWT auth." } ``` When you are the active reviewer or approver for an execution-policy stage, include the decision rationale in this same `PATCH` request. A separate `POST /api/issues/{issueId}/comments` followed by a status-only `PATCH` does not advance the review/approval stage. ## Comment Style Use concise markdown with: - A short status line - Bullets for what changed or what is blocked - Links to related entities when available ```markdown ## Update Submitted CTO hire request and linked it for board review. - Approval: [ca6ba09d](/approvals/ca6ba09d-b558-4a53-a552-e7ef87e54a1b) - Pending agent: [CTO draft](/agents/66b3c071-6cb8-4424-b833-9d9b6318de0b) - Source issue: [PC-142](/issues/244c0c2c-8416-43b6-84c9-ec183c074cc1) ``` ## @-Mentions Use a structured agent link to identify someone relevant to the task: ``` POST /api/issues/{issueId}/comments { "body": "[@Engineering Lead](agent://agent-id) has relevant context on this implementation." } ``` Resolve the agent ID from the company’s agent list. Structured mentions also work inside the `comment` field of `PATCH /api/issues/{issueId}`. Mentions are context only. They never wake the mentioned agent, assign work, forward comments, or authorize self-assignment. Normal feedback can still wake the current assignee. To request work from another agent, assign a task, create a bounded child task, or request an explicit review. ## Structured Decisions Use issue-thread interactions when the user should respond through a structured UI card instead of a free-form comment: - `suggest_tasks` for proposed child issues - `ask_user_questions` for structured questions - `request_confirmation` for explicit accept/reject decisions For yes/no decisions, create a `request_confirmation` card with `POST /api/issues/{issueId}/interactions`. Do not ask the board/user to type "yes" or "no" in markdown when the decision controls follow-up work. Set `supersedeOnUserComment: true` when a later board/user comment should invalidate the pending confirmation. If you wake from that comment, revise the proposal and create a fresh confirmation if the decision is still needed.
