fix(build): typecheck server/src/__tests__ and fix every type error (#18739)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - The server has about 1,100 test and helper files in `server/src/__tests__` > - `server/tsconfig.json` excludes that directory, Vitest does not check types, and no script runs the tsconfig in that directory > - So a test can call a function with the wrong arguments and still pass, and no tool reports it > - This gap hid 2,168 real type errors, and some of them hid tests that did not test what they claim > - This pull request fixes all of these errors and adds the directory to the server layers from paperclipai/paperclip#18737 > - The benefit is that a type error in a server test now fails the typecheck, with no baseline and no backlog ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs paperclipai/paperclip#18737, which is merged and added the server layers. Refs paperclipai/paperclip#18738, which is merged and checks the test projects outside `pnpm -r`, so it is not a duplicate. Refs paperclipai/paperclip#18137, which records that this directory has no check. **What happened?** No tool checked the types of 1,074 of the 1,101 files in `server/src/__tests__`. I searched `package.json`, the workflows, and all tsconfig files. 27 files are in the program of another tsconfig, and these 27 have 0 errors. 11 of the 27 are in `helpers/maintenance/tsconfig.json`. No script ran that project when I measured this. paperclipai/paperclip#18738 now runs it. **Expected behavior** The server typecheck checks these files, and a type error fails the check. **Steps to reproduce** 1. On the base commit, run `tsc -p server/src/__tests__/tsconfig.json --noEmit`. It reports 6,536 errors and needs 12.3 GiB. 2. Add a type error to any file in `server/src/__tests__`. 3. Run `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck`. It passes. **Paperclip version or commit** I measured the error breakdown below on commit `8dfd632452`, with TypeScript 7.0.2. The branch now includes master up to paperclipai/paperclip#18865. **Deployment mode** Not applicable. This issue applies to development and CI. No production source file in the server changes. ### Error breakdown Each row adds one change to the row above. | Step | Total errors | Change | Cause | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Config as committed | 6,536 | | | | Add `src/types/*.d.ts` | 4,447 | -2,089 | Config. The Express request types were missing. | | Set `rootDir` to the repository root | 2,436 | -2,011 | Config. | | Set `allowImportingTsExtensions` | 2,181 | -255 | Config. Vitest accepts `.ts` imports. | | Add `ES2024.Promise` to `lib` | 2,138 | -43 | Config. Node 24 has `Promise.withResolvers`. | | Set `allowJs` for `.mjs` imports | 2,148 | +10 | Config. It removes 8 `TS7016` errors and shows new real errors. | | Set `declaration` to false | 2,142 | -6 | Config. Tests emit nothing. | | Count only files in `server/src` | 2,058 | -84 | Other packages: 53 Daytona, 29 Runner test, 2 UI. | So 4,478 of the 6,536 errors (69%) came from config or scope, and 2,058 are real type errors in 314 files. The 29 Runner test errors are also real, which gives 2,087 errors. Tests that master added after this measurement had 81 more errors, so this pull request fixes 2,168 errors. This table classifies the first 2,058 errors. | Kind of real error | Errors | | --- | --- | | Wrong argument or assignment type | 1,023 | | Stale or partial fixture objects | 525 | | Property that the type does not have | 317 | | Missing narrowing of null or unknown | 101 | | Implicit any | 60 | | Missing name or module | 16 | | Other | 16 | ### What the type errors hid Most errors were stale fixtures and loose mocks. These errors hid real test problems, and this pull request fixes them: - **A test that never ran.** `instrumentation.test.ts` required `sdk-trace-base`, which is not installed. So 3 span tests were skipped. They now run and pass. - **Assertions that could not fail.** - `issue-thread-interactions-service` used a company ID as an issue ID. - `status-card-evaluation-work` compared `[]` with `[]` in a rollback check. - `slack-conversation-lifecycle` read `item.issueId`, which does not exist. - `email-channels` used a permission key that does not exist. - `heartbeat-project-env` imported `LOW_TRUST_REVIEW_PRESET`, which is not exported. The value was undefined. - **Postgres processes that did not stop.** 11 test files called `stop` on the test database helper. That method does not exist, and the helper method is `cleanup`. - **Arguments that the service ignored.** - `methodKey` is now `connectionMethodKey` in the Daytona, Unikraft, 1Password, and Railway tests. - 108 calls passed `"owner-user"` to a parameter that expects an options object. - 9 chat wizard fixtures passed `managementContext` as `source`, so they ran `existing_app` and not `manifest`. - 2 tests passed a `{ userId }` actor that the function ignores. - Inserts into `environments` passed a `companyId` column that the table does not have. - **Problems in tests that master added during this work.** - `sandbox-creation-operations` read `database.connectionString` when an external test database was set. In that mode `database` is undefined, so the fixture would stop with a TypeError. It now uses the external URL. - `idle-completed-history` set a Dot operation to `dispatched`. That is a Muse status, and the Dot type does not have it. The fixture now uses `admitted`, which is a real in-flight Dot status. ### Possible product problems, not changed These may be real problems in production code or types. I did not change them, because this pull request does not change production behavior: - `decisions-service` `service.create` does not validate the lenient `cancel_issue_tree` input. - `createConnection` ignores `input.connectionPurpose`. - The `createConnection` route schema default stores `{}` for `transportConfig`. - `prepareManagedAiRuntime` accepted the invalid value `mode: "connection"`. - `createBinding` accepts invalid `projectionClass` strings outside class 3. - `ensureManagedProjectWorkspace` forwards an untyped `repoRef` by spread. - `routineVariableSchema.label` is optional, but `RoutineVariable.label` is required. - `ToolRunContext.projectId` may be too strict. - `withdrawInteraction` reads `issue.status`, which its type omits. - `issueService.list` and `reconcileNativeFinalizations` omit fields that they return at runtime. - `createGitHubExternalObjectProvider` handles `tokenProvider: null`, but its type forbids this value. ## What Changed - Fixed the 2,168 type errors. The diff changes 322 test and helper files. - Corrected `server/src/__tests__/tsconfig.json`. Editors and the typecheck now read the same options and report the same errors. - Added three `test-tree` layers to `server/scripts/typecheck-layers.mjs`. They read the server layers as declarations, and any error fails them. A hash of the path selects the shard, so a new file does not move other files. - Added `server/scripts/typecheck-stubs/daytona-sdk.d.ts`. Server tests reach Daytona plugin source, and the root install does not have `@daytonaio/sdk`. - Changed two imports in `ui/src/lib/issue-execution-policy.ts` to use `.js` extensions, because server tests import this file. - Made `declarationsConfig` and `--declarations-only` skip the `test-tree` layers, because these layers emit nothing. Other projects read only the source layers. Added a test for this. - Updated `doc/DEVELOPING.md`. ## Verification Run these commands: ```sh pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck pnpm exec vitest run server/scripts/typecheck-layers.test.mjs ``` Results on macOS (arm64), Node 24, 16 cores. Each check ran after the merge of paperclipai/paperclip#18738 unless the row says otherwise: | Check | Commit | Result | | --- | --- | --- | | Server typecheck, `PAPERCLIP_TYPECHECK_LOW_MEMORY=1`, all 7 layers | `6e45a08573` | Exit 0, 0 errors, 62 seconds, peak 3.52 GiB | | `node scripts/typecheck-test-projects.mjs --low-memory` | `a3306bd13e` | Exit 0, 0 errors, 42 seconds, peak 3.25 GiB | | The same script with `--reuse-declarations` | `1b878aabc0` | Exit 0, 0 errors | | `typecheck-layers.test.mjs` and `live-recovery-work.test.ts` | `01db5634e4` | 90 passed. These include real compiler runs for a pass, a type error, and an invalid tsconfig. | | `tsconfig.declarations.json` after a full server typecheck | `0fb1e4fb0a` | It references only `below`, `cycle`, and `above`. No generated config names a `tsconfig.layers.json` file. | | Owned runtime test in `idle-completed-history` | `e8f2f448ac` | Passed, with the fix that master later replaced | | `idle-incoming-wake`, `plugin-idle-manager`, and the changed `chat-channels` test | `6e45a08573` | 30 passed | | Runner `native-execution.test.ts` | `eab4dcc1f4` | 114 passed | | The 19 server test files that changed since `eab4dcc1f4`, and `typecheck-layers.test.mjs` | `259737b700` | 4,275 of 4,277 passed. The 2 failures are in `chat-channels` and are in the list of 7 below. | The peak is the largest single process, from `/usr/bin/time -l`. Peaks for the server typecheck were between 3.42 GiB and 3.56 GiB across 8 runs. Peaks for the test projects were 3.25 GiB and 3.37 GiB across 2 runs. I did not measure a cgroup. **Runtime check of the fixes.** Types do not prove that a test still works. So I ran all 309 changed server test files, 11,929 tests, before the rebase onto paperclipai/paperclip#18737: | Result | Tests | Detail | | --- | --- | --- | | Passed | 11,913 | Includes the 2 tests and the 54 `dot-runner` tests that passed in a later run, as described below. | | Failed | 7 | The same 7 tests also fail on the commit before the fixes. | | Skipped | 9 | These tests have their own skip conditions: `sentry` 5, and 1 each in `bundled-plugin-registration`, `customer-success-cloud`, `onepassword-connection`, and `workspace-runtime-https-live-exercise`. | The 7 tests that fail with and without this change, on my machine: - 3 tests in `chat-channels` and `email-channels` stop with `ENOENT` on a `SKILL.md` file. The path is in the parent checkout, above the git worktree that I used, so I expect that the worktree is the cause. I did not prove this. - `workspace-instance-cleanup` compares `/private/var/...` with `/var/...`. This is a macOS symlink difference. - 2 tests in `git-reproducible-managed-checkouts` get `unknown_base_git_files` and expect `unpushed_managed_checkout`. I did not find the cause. - 1 more test in `chat-channels`, `materializes direct external-chat finals once`, gets `undefined`. I did not find the cause. CI is the check for these 7 tests. `ci / verify` passed on `eab4dcc1f4`. Failures during this work: - My fix to `agent-runtime-connector-access` changed an invalid permission key in the setup, but not in the assertion. The runtime check found this. I corrected the assertion, and the file passes. - `heartbeat-plugin-environment` failed one wait in the full run. It passed three times alone, so I think that load caused the failure. It can fail again under load. - `dot-runner` skipped all 54 tests in the full run because `cargo` was not on my `PATH`. It then passed 54 of 54 with the toolchain on the `PATH`. - My first `lib` value removed the default DOM types, and the error count went up by 375. I added the DOM libraries. - My Daytona stub with bare `any` left 48 errors, because generic helpers then inferred `unknown`. I added shapes that return promises. - One fix to `agent-secrets-routes` used `class_3_static_lease`, and the test failed. That class allows only specific paths. I reverted to `unclassified`. - `ci / General tests (server (8/12))` failed on `259737b700` because of the flaky port in `idle-completed-history`. paperclipai/paperclip#18853 fixed this test on master, so this pull request keeps that fix. **Audit of the diff.** I counted these patterns in added and removed lines, to find fixes that only hide an error: | Pattern | Added | Removed | | --- | --- | --- | | `@ts-ignore` | 0 | 0 | | `@ts-expect-error` | 0 | 1 | | `.skip` | 0 | 0 | | `as any` | 9 | 9 | | `: any` | 11 | 2 | | `as never` | 8 | 2 | | `as unknown as` | 35 | 4 | | `Promise<unknown>` | 16 | 5 | | `expect(` | 128 | 113 | No hunk removes more `expect(` calls than it adds. Three removals of test content were intentional, and I checked each one: - `muse-control` removed `signalToken`. Line 1012 already asserts that it is absent. - `merged-pr-confirmation-sweep` removed legacy aliases. Other tests cover them. - `heartbeat-workspace-branch-containment` removed a `finalize` branch that no test row can reach. Some partial fixtures stay unchecked through `as unknown as` and `Promise<unknown>`, mostly in `issue-agent-mutation-ownership-routes` and `issue-comment-reopen-routes`. **Accuracy of the check.** One program over the tree and the three shards reported the same errors at the same positions. Memory, as the peak of the largest process on one thread, was 3.93 GiB for one program and 2.43 GiB for the largest shard. I measured these two values before the fixes. Not run or not proven: - I did not run the full `pnpm test:run`, or a root `pnpm build`. I expect CI to run the full suites. - I did not run the 4 GiB container check, or the full `scripts/typecheck-low-memory.mjs`. The peaks above come from macOS, so they are not a Linux cgroup measurement. - I did not run the UI typecheck after the merges. - `workspace-runtime-https-live-exercise` is skipped, so its `cleanup` fix did not run. ## Risks - **A large diff in test files.** 328 files change. A pull request that edits the same tests can get merge conflicts. New tests on master can also add type errors before this merges. Any such error fails this check and needs a fix here. - **A higher cost for changes to source types.** A change to a type can add errors in test files that the author did not touch. The author must then fix them. This is the purpose of the check, but it is new work. - **Changed test behavior.** Some tests now run paths that they did not run before, such as the 9 chat wizard fixtures and the 3 span tests. They pass here, but they can be more sensitive to timing or to the environment. - **The Daytona stub can go stale.** The stub is written by hand. If the plugin uses a new SDK member, the typecheck reports an error until someone updates the stub. - **The release path.** `release-verify.yml` and `scripts/release.sh` run `pnpm -r typecheck`, so they now run this check. - **The tsconfig change.** The test transform reads `server/src/__tests__/tsconfig.json`. The options that I changed are for type checks, and the runs above passed. - **A gap that remains.** Tsconfigs in `packages/paperclip-runner` and in most sandbox provider plugins exclude `*.test.ts`. This check does not read most of those test files, so they can still drift. That work is separate from this pull request. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. fix(runner): preserve cleanup ownership across startup failures (#18658)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip controls which run owns an agent task. > - A plugin can continue accepted work after Core stops waiting. > - A late task-creation reply can therefore arrive after startup cancellation. > - Core must keep that work owned until its resource identity and cleanup outcome are known. > - This PR supplies the cleanup and recovery support before shared startup is enabled. > - The dependent activation PR can then reuse transport data within a bounded startup context. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #18405. This is the independently mergeable prerequisite for that stacked activation PR. **What existing behavior does this improve?** Cleanup of explicitly recorded startup work that outlives its caller. **Current behavior** Caller timeout, worker exit, or failed cleanup-intent persistence can leave work without a complete recovery path. **Proposed behavior** Retain the cleanup obligation, use existing Stop and recovery queues, and release ownership only after the exact task and accepted work have stopped. Ordinary calls keep their existing startup payloads and budgets. This PR does not create startup contexts or advertise transport reuse. **Reason and benefit** Separate the failure-handling contract from activation so each can be reviewed on its own. This support PR has **no standalone TTFT speedup**. ## What Changed - Add the startup cleanup marker, exact ownership checks, verified completion, and acknowledgement helpers. - Connect recorded cleanup obligations to existing Stop, deadline reconciliation, restart recovery, and retry scheduling. - Retain typed cleanup responsibility when a database write fails. Keep the nonterminal run from being treated as ordinary completed cleanup. - Observe late acquisition results and save resource identities before retiring them. Retain real host writes and received results across worker exit or persistence failure. - Queue abandoned replacement tasks through the existing creation journal and cleanup machinery. Require the replacement's own Stop proof. - Accept an explicit startup context in the internal bridge for lifetime tracking. Automatic context creation, marker production, capability advertisement, transport capture, and executor activation belong to #18405. - Add PostgreSQL and worker IPC regressions, including legacy payload assertions. ## Verification Initial split source `8fb482d8be9e70101b0cfdd0830f41cf5b8e3cf4` had tree `95508bd1859e991670cad8afd4de8d2167009ac5`. **190 distinct targeted tests pass**, along with server typechecking. The selected checks cover real PostgreSQL cleanup/ownership, worker IPC, the bridge and creation journal, ordinary/distributed Stop, restart and deadline recovery, idle-sleep behavior, and the unchanged legacy warm-task suite. Independent recovery and worker reviews found no blocking issue. The first correction, `b6342d42042601b376da38dc8e1dba9ca80e9539`, fixes the replacement cleanup finding with the existing startup-cleanup marker, scoped to contextual abandoned task creations. The replacement was never prepared, so preparation-stop proof is not required. No dispatch is fabricated and no normal-startup query is added. The actual queue/sweep/driver/receipt/cancellation regression fails before the fix and passes after it: void, running or foreign-task status retains ownership; exact-task stopped status permits completion even when Release returns void. **64 affected targeted cases and server typechecking pass**. Independent review found no blocker. Current source is `f53af72af76f263096c3c2e788506e6faef9474f`. It fixes both recovery findings from the prior head's Apex 3/5: orphan recovery now preserves pending or completed-but-not-cancelled cleanup through its existing final-write fence, and exact late identities can reach verified cleanup after reconciliation or restart. The regression selection went from four failing assertions to six passing cases. Affected selections cover 217 distinct cases; the exact final six-case regression and server typecheck pass. Independent reviewers found no blocker in either fix. Current-head standard review is 5/5 and all CI checks pass (54 successes, three expected skips, plus Snyk). Apex also completed at **5/5** on this exact head, with zero unresolved threads. The requested independent availability audit is complete on this head. It found an activation-dependent operability gap: an acquisition response that is never received can leave an unknown creation identity with no supported task inspection/reconciliation path, while cleanup keeps the run owner reserved. This does not occur in ordinary lower-only calls. The contract and recovery policy need follow-up before activation; the external review scores do not resolve that availability tradeoff. The split preserves the accepted implementation at `21db7b3851` after its clean merge with frozen master `946735d03a55c1fb4cc5434d6bf1d87742daa9df`. The initial dependent activation PR restored exact aggregate tree `f68c6895f87c7b93ae03e6324d955d2659a99dce`. Both subsequent cleanup corrections are integrated into upper head `27978f294a02da3992585c7f4daa73cd8fcf99f8`; its current aggregate tree is `a0b66c33f5e22745f034f45d24d213f5c210cf16`. Lower-only payload tests cover the absence of capability advertisement and transport projection. Only targeted local tests and typechecking are used. Full regression coverage runs in GitHub CI. No deployment or ROM qualification is part of this change. The lower audit covered connected worker, creation-journal, Stop, restart, deadline and orphan-recovery paths. A new isolated real-PostgreSQL characterization reproduced the unknown-ID hold through actual recovery, cleanup verification and run-control cancellation. It models a lost acquisition response; it is not a live provider or complete IPC test. No source edits were made by the audit. The upper/composition audit remains required after its review cycle. ## Risks - Recording a replacement result now commits with the existing cleanup notification. This conditional replacement path adds transaction/notification responses; common retained startup is unchanged. - This adds cleanup and recovery state handling. A missing receipt or permanently inaccessible old backend can keep ownership held indefinitely. Temporary outages retry; an ordinary retry is not evidence that a deleted or replaced backend stopped. - A caller timeout does not undo work already accepted by a plugin. Unknown resource creation remains unresolved until its identity/outcome is established. Current task creation has no supported inspect-by-operation or operator reconciliation API for a permanently lost identity; repeated Stop alone cannot resolve it. - The support code understands records produced by the dependent activation PR. It does not enable the shared startup policy by itself. - Existing legacy callers must retain their behavior; context-only automatic replacement cleanup remains explicitly scoped. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact model ID and context window are not exposed in this session. Tool-assisted implementation, targeted testing, and independent subagent review. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used, with available version and capability details - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this is the requested split of existing work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue with the required fields - [x] I have not referenced internal issues or private links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket ID - [x] Targeted local tests pass on this source - [x] I have added or updated relevant tests - [x] I have updated relevant documentation - [x] I have documented the risks - [x] All current-head GitHub CI gates are green - [x] Current-head standard Greptile and Apex are 5/5 with no unresolved findings - [x] I will address all review comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(native): restore plugin checkpoints for same-run retries (#17814)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Native sessions retain provider state across execution attempts. > - A same-run retry can receive a replacement plugin task lease. > - The executor loaded the old task checkpoint only for crash recovery. > - An ordinary retry could fail its local authority check before reading that checkpoint. > - This change restores the checkpoint through the existing authorized lease transfer. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A native provider turn ended without its completion result. Paperclip scheduled an exact-checkpoint retry on the same heartbeat run. The retry acquired a new plugin task lease, then failed with `runner_state_identity_mismatch: authority_indeterminate`. The checkpoint restore branch required a `resume_dead_runner` restart claim. Ordinary same-run retries have no such claim. A controlled fixture with a retained remote checkpoint and no local lifecycle receipt reproduces the error. The original controller file contents were unavailable, so that part of the incident mechanism remains inferred. **Expected behavior** Load the retained plugin checkpoint after the existing policy proves the lease transfer is safe. Keep the original run, session, and saved control journal. Reject an unverified predecessor or a changed checkpoint identity. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Start a native session through a plugin task environment. 2. End its provider turn without a completion result and retain its checkpoint. 3. Retry the same run on a replacement task lease without a restart claim. 4. With no local lifecycle receipt, observe the authority error before the checkpoint read. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced against source `507dc70be26c191e372f09e58dc0965e73bf8f57`. **Deployment mode** Native Runner with a plugin task environment. The observed provider used ACPX Claude. The controlled executor fixture uses the shared native boundary. Related work: #17439 concerns recovery after controller replacement. This fix uses the existing checkpoint contract and does not depend on that PR. ## What Changed - Restore prior plugin state for an ordinary same-run attempt when its lease changes. - Keep the existing company, agent, workspace, retained-state, and termination checks. - Extend executor regressions for ordinary retries, mismatched checkpoints, and missing stop proof. - Exercise the same-run checkpoint read through the database-backed task API. - Document the recovery rule and verification recipes. ## Verification - Failing before: the ordinary retry reproduces `authority_indeterminate`. Both new denial cases also fail because the old branch never reaches the transfer policy. - Passing after: all six focused checkpoint cases pass. The saved control journal stays byte-for-byte unchanged. Rejected cases do not construct a provider backend. - `pnpm -r typecheck` passes. - Map and module-boundary checks pass. - All 858 executor, database lease-authority, plugin task, and ownership tests pass. `pnpm build` passes. - The broad local `pnpm test:run` attempt did not complete. It hit a 20-second timeout in the existing historical workspace-recovery HTTP Retry case. That exact case then passed in isolation on the unchanged head. The broad local attempt was stopped after the full CI matrix passed; it is not counted as a local pass. - Greptile reviewed current head `5bc11fa978ab87d3d9c5d575fa9666185aaafc2c` at 5/5 with no actionable findings. The full current-head CI matrix passed on attempt 2: 55 checks passed, no pending or failed checks, and two expected Storybook jobs skipped. - The first broader local attempt could not bind embedded PostgreSQL inside the sandbox (`EPERM`). It was stopped and restarted with loopback access. This was a setup failure, separate from the observed red regression. - The first CI attempt failed two existing checks: the process-adapter signoff happy path exhausted its run wait budget, and the workspace export scheduler did not reach `complete` within 20 seconds. Both tests pass in isolated local runs on the unchanged head. Both failed shards passed on their single rerun without code changes. The initial failures remain recorded. Their timing cause is not proven by the later passes. - Live acceptance at the fixed revision has not run. The hosted workspace still serves the earlier release. No deployment or retry of the original task is claimed. ## Risks The new checkpoint read runs only for same-run plugin recovery with a replacement lease. Missing termination proof, changed scope, or a changed Runner identity still stops execution. The lease resolver owns these checks. The fix does not replay tools or change retry budgets. A turn that omitted its completion result still needs the existing bounded continuation to finish useful work. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with reasoning, repository tools, and code execution. The runtime does not expose a more specific backend model ID or context-window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Verify native Runner setup through plugin tasks (#17029)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages work for AI agents. > - An environment plugin can own a Runner task. > - The merged launch-preparation contract lets the execution owner build the provider configuration. > - Core still needs a task process owner and a setup test that uses that configuration. > - This PR connects the task API to the Runner process-owner contract. > - Operators can test a plugin environment before Core sends it task work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Runner, plugin SDK, and agent environment tests. **Problem or motivation** A task-only environment cannot use the shell-based setup path. Core must verify the Runner hello exchange and process cleanup through dedicated task operations. **Proposed solution** Add a lease-bound task driver and use it for a bounded setup probe. Keep heartbeat admission and task execution in #16978. This PR follows the merged launch-preparation contract in #16997. **Alternatives considered** A provider declaration alone cannot prove that Runner and the provider connect. A shell bridge would give the plugin an unnecessary command interface. ## What Changed - Pass structured Runner launch data to process owners. Support an external connection and explicit detach. - Add typed launch authentication checks and checkpoint operations. Check lease, run, project, and retained-task authority. - Connect launch preparation, PRP, termination proof, and credential handoff to the task driver. Reject local environment overrides during installed-account setup. Pass saved-account identity and credential home directly from Core. - Run a short-lived setup probe through the existing agent environment test API. Require a verified provider hello and cleanup. Keep saved Copilot account checks metadata-only through a dedicated task operation. - Update the Copilot source identity because the shared transport source changed. Keep provider behavior and the earlier identity fixture. ## Verification - CI passes on `f987adec7`: 55 successful checks and 5 expected skips. Standard Greptile and Apex are both 5/5 with no open findings. The branch merges cleanly with current master. - Repository typecheck and build pass after the rebase onto the workspace-provider contract. Server typecheck and build also pass after the final setup fix. - The 110 focused lease, SDK, setup, Copilot, and route cases pass after the rebase. All 14 setup cases pass after the final change. These include a real local Runner with a test provider. The saved-agent model-discovery case also passes. - Apex found that Core's relative workspace marker failed the driver path check, and non-Codex sessions omitted the observed model. Both failures were reproduced and fixed. The probe leaves physical workspace selection to plugin preparation. The transport reads each provider's observed model and exposes it to the driver. All 14 setup cases, 6 transport peer cases, and both existing real Runner/OpenCode cases pass. Runner build and server typecheck pass. - The coverage audit removed two redundant cases, repeated fixture code, and two extra real Runner launches. It kept authorization, credential selection, cancellation, lost replies, termination proof, checkpoint identity, and provider setup checks. - The Copilot source-identity check passes. The added-line secret and PII scan passes. The unmerged v52 attestation was regenerated after the shared transport fix. - CI on `13faeff02` caught one stale Copilot digest assertion after attestation regeneration. The literal now matches the candidate attestation, and all 49 installation cases pass. That CI lane otherwise passed 1,818 cases. - An earlier CI run hit an unchanged UI toast timing test. The separate fix is tracked in #16952. Current CI passes that shard. CI also caught a stale model-discovery assertion in this change; the assertion is fixed. - The local full-suite run was stopped when master changed. The final CI run supplies exact-head full-suite validation. No live Cloud or provider test was run. ## Risks - Native hello tests require a saved Core account or the installed account. Local environment overrides are unsupported for installed-account probes and fail before the provider runs. - A native task provider must declare launch preparation and authentication-check version 1. It must keep the checked configuration fixed through submission. Core rejects providers that cannot make this guarantee. - A lost task reply does not prove process termination. Core retains grants until the provider proves termination and Core saves required state. - This PR does not enable native heartbeat dispatch through plugin environments. Cloud deployment and live provider validation remain separate. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6. The exact model ID and context window are not exposed in this session. Tool use includes code editing, local tests, and the GitHub CLI. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal issue details - [x] I have run focused tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Add lease-scoped Runner task hooks to environment plugins (#15406)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip coordinates AI agents and their runs. > - Environment plugins own remote capacity. > - A plugin needs a typed API to start and stop its installed Runner. > - Core must derive authority from the saved lease. > - A lost reply or controller restart must not lose cleanup authority. > - This PR adds the worker contract and the host task service. > - Native execution and Runner changes are separate PRs. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Plugin SDK and environment lease services. **Current behavior** Environment plugins have no typed Runner task hook. Core cannot dispatch these tasks or recover their credential handoff through a saved lease. **Proposed behavior** Add validated task operations, worker negotiation, company and project checks, retained-session authorization, and durable cleanup. Keep credentials out of lease metadata. **Additional context** This PR is the first part of a smaller series. Runner installed-home support is in #16977. Native execution and setup are in #16978. Both are stacked drafts. This PR does not enable native plugin execution, change default environments, add a route, or add a database migration. ## What Changed - Add `supportsTasks` and `onEnvironmentTask` with seven typed operations. - Validate worker requests and responses. Reject shell commands and file transfer operations. - Pin dispatch and cleanup to the saved company, lease, plugin, and driver. - Authorize projects and retained sessions. Validate the current run separately from the retained PRP identity. - Save dispatch before the provider call. Fence admission during cleanup. Require observed process termination. - Save account writeback authority on the lease. Recover Codex refreshes through the existing account and secret services. - Document the task API. Keep the Runner, heartbeat, setup, workspace, and provider changes in later PRs. ## Verification - Full `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed on the separated API scope. - 201 focused tests passed: SDK worker dispatch, task validation, PostgreSQL task lineage, credential recovery, and existing environment cleanup. - The lineage test covers a third run, repeated same-run replacements, a stale submitting run, and exact termination receipts. - Initial commands hit sandbox socket/IPC restrictions. The permitted runs executed PostgreSQL and passed. A typecheck attempt lacked Cargo in PATH; the run with the installed toolchain passed. - The earlier combined implementation had a full local run with 22,286 passing tests, 120 skips, and eight failed assertions. Task fixture failures were fixed before this split. Remaining host Git and temporary-path assertions are recorded in the previous PR revision. This split does not claim a fresh full local suite pass. - The standard Greptile review scored this API head 5/5 with no unresolved threads. CI is green. The single Apex review also scored this head 5/5 with no actionable findings. - Fresh API CI lost a self-hosted runner during server shard 9. GitHub reported lost communication, with no failed test step. The affected jobs passed on retry without code changes. - CI on the prior combined head failed an unchanged workspace dev-server readiness case. No unrelated test fix is included here. Fresh CI is required for this smaller head. - This scope does not run a provider or a Cloud test. The user owns deployment and the intermediate Cloud test. ## Risks - The API is opt-in. Native plugin execution requires the later integrations. - Providers must make task submission idempotent and prove descendant termination. - A failed status read or credential export keeps the lease available for cleanup. - Codex refresh writeback requires the same active grant, secret reference, and session epoch. Revocation or account replacement discards the old refresh. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. Used source inspection, code execution, tests, and GitHub tools. The exact served model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run local checks and recorded failures and their results above - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
