DottaandPaperclip f4f02880ca fix(server): wake failed retry notices from committed changes (#17649)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip keeps exact failed chat retries in durable action and wake
receipts.
> - Deferred and declined retries owe safe notices to their original
conversation.
> - Periodic publication maintenance repeatedly inspects those receipts
when idle.
> - Committing receipt, authority, lifecycle and lease changes already
identifies when eligibility can change.
> - A scoped owner reconstructs durable obligations, drains bounded
candidates, retains contention, then becomes quiet.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

This existing failed-retry notice slice follows #17647. It removes the
failed-retry notice duty from periodic publication maintenance while
preserving the explicit manual API. Existing action, receipt,
publication and source rows remain authoritative; no new table or
scheduler is added.

**Problem:** Removing the scan alone loses notices after real admission,
cancellation, early refusal, requester or agent restoration, and
relevant lease settlement. Millisecond cursor truncation can also repeat
denied history.

**Expected behavior:** Committed supported writes wake the scoped notice
owner, which uses current authorization and precise cursors. Real
retries survive failure, contention, restart and drain; settled work has
no recurring SQL.

## What Changed

- Extract failed-retry projection under the existing authorization
owner. Preserve current receipt/source authority and provider transport
authorization.
- Register bounded scoped work using the existing delivery
coordinator/scheduler. Preserve exact PostgreSQL cursor precision,
contention and a wake arriving during reconciliation.
- Extend the shared transaction-aware notification boundary to
failed-retry notices. Cover admission, conditional denial, early
refusal, requester changes, and agent lifecycle transitions to an
invokable status. Two shared receipt hooks and their budget fixture
correction already landed in the preceding inbound slice; preserve them
once.
- Notify when relevant native lease cleanup completes or a reusable
lease is retired, preserving claim fencing and caller-owned
transactions.
- Avoid the discovery scan identified in #17647: known task scopes
require zero discovery SQL; company/startup discovery uses a single
DISTINCT projection from the same candidate predicate. Bounded current
authorization still runs afterward.
- Remove only this duty from periodic publication maintenance, retain
manual behavior and startup reconstruction, and add real
producer/lifecycle/query-budget regressions with an audit.

## Verification

Published head: `fa95a1f2fb9d546aa62dbd3b43aa714f5c88bd35`, targeting
master after #17647 merged at
`1aa3a21ac41f602977638cf0be875b01a243e69f`.

- **42 distinct current combined-master cases pass:** 21
retry-notice/native-lease/restored-input producer cases (1,651 skipped),
plus all 21 app/startup and task-drain admission-release cases. Server
typechecking, build and module boundaries pass. The final follow-up adds
acceptance documentation only; all 17 owned server source/test hashes
are unchanged.
- The prior **404-case** matrix passes at prepared revision
`c2c53b839497be6f5e28aa2cd5ba50cfd1d76d4a`: 259 across six complete
consumer/lifecycle/environment suites, 20 notice/lease cases, 53
ordinary-notice and 72 Retry/budget cases. Those chat selections skip
1,651/1,618/1,599 cases. A subsequent 21-case combined producer check
passes after the parent restoration repair. These earlier runs retain
their revision scope.
- The normal two-parent integration
`43d0f84ea56845b8fc4946a7533ecbf7f07b679a` preserves the complete
19-path owned binary patch and all 23 unrelated master paths/deletions.
The semantic merge base is the verified landed parent head
`41f7e2c9e351efa6cfa5ef699c0e69df7425012b`; squash ancestry otherwise
causes historical conflicts. Both parent commits and the exact resolved
tree are verified; no rebase or force push occurs.
- Three scope-discovery regressions fail before the fix. The first SQL
projection fails with PostgreSQL 42702 (ambiguous company column), then
passes after using a distinct company alias. Known task hints have zero
discovery SQL; company/startup discovery has one query returning only
distinct task scopes. Existing bounded projection/current authorization
remain intact.
- Current producer tests cover commit/rollback, parked authority
restoration, real agent resume, early refusal, requester changes, native
lease cleanup/replacement, drain/restart/shutdown, precise cursors and
contention. Parent shared admission/denial/restored-input notifications
are preserved once. No polling backstop or storage is added.
- [The owner
audit](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/fa95a1f2fb9d546aa62dbd3b43aa714f5c88bd35/doc/plans/2026-10-25-failed-retry-notices-sleep-audit.md#final-landed-parent-acceptance--october-28)
records current commands, fixtures, failure history and limits. Fresh
exact-head remote checks and Greptile 5/5 are pending; old-head reviews
do not count.

The owner audit preserves prior failures and their original revision
scope. The old remote head's Runner receipt timeout, cancelled gate, and
review error are not current passes; fresh exact-head checks and
Greptile 5/5 are required. No full local repository suite, live provider
tenant, external wake alarm, physical suspension or savings claim is
made.

### Final remote gates

Exact published head `fa95a1f2fb9d546aa62dbd3b43aa714f5c88bd35` has
Greptile 5/5 with no actionable findings, successful current main CI and
ready-triggered security scan. The final dependency/quality review
workflow `40747725096` passed after waiting for a GitHub-hosted runner.
No Ponytail verdict is present.

Two automatic main CI requests and two identical-head quality-review
requests were created one second apart. The older main run was
automatically cancelled; only the proven duplicate, unstarted quality
request was cancelled manually. Their same-head, same-workflow
replacements both finish successfully. The merge guard verifies these
replacements, all current checks and current required-status integration
rules before excluding the superseded cancellation contexts. No actual
failing review or current check is waived and no protection bypass is
used.

## Risks

- Process-local signals cover supported writers using this boundary, not
independent SQL or other replicas.
- Lease completion now reads/locks the exact row before updating.
Reusable lease retirement wakes company scope because its previous issue
can differ. Claims and transaction ownership remain enforced.
- Broad discovery can inspect history inside PostgreSQL; DISTINCT
reduces returned rows and round trips, without claiming constant
database cost. Task hints are wake requests, so bounded reconciliation
handles already exhausted scopes.
- Native filesystem activation belongs to execution authorization and is
not an eligibility input for this notice projection. Other
notice/maintenance duties and Cloud sleep gates remain separate.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with reasoning, local code inspection,
shell execution, and PostgreSQL testing. The exact serving model
identifier and context-window size are not exposed in this session.

DottaandPaperclip b14e1ecaf8 feat: add a complete agent YAML configuration editor (#18036)
<!-- entire-trail-link-start -->
https://entire.com/gh/paperclipai/-/trails/175/changes/paperclip/175
<!-- entire-trail-link-end -->

## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Operators configure each agent through several settings tabs.
> - Operators also need one complete, editable configuration document.
> - The document must retain each resource service's access and
validation rules.
> - This pull request defines the `paperclip/v1` Agent YAML format and
adds an Advanced editor.
> - The editor previews changes, rejects stale core writes, and explains
partial saves.
> - Operators can edit agent settings in one place and verify the saved
state after reload.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #2219. Related settings work: #10974.

**Problem or motivation**

Agent configuration spans profile, runtime, instructions, skills, tools,
channels, permissions, secrets, keys, and revision history. Operators
cannot inspect and edit those settings as one versioned YAML document.

**Proposed solution**

Add an Advanced agent tab with a YAML editor. Define a shared document
schema. Read and write resources through their existing APIs. Separate
editable settings, explicit commands, and read-only observed state.

**Alternatives considered**

A raw agent-row editor would omit related resources. A generic database
update would bypass resource ownership. The editor therefore uses the
existing resource contracts and records partial results when a later
request fails.

**Roadmap alignment**

This extends the shipped agent configuration capability. It relates to
easy AGENTS.md configuration, multi-harness teams, governed tool access,
and secrets management. Stored credentials remain redacted. This format
is an editable settings view; it does not add company portability or
provider consent.

## What Changed

- Add the `paperclip/v1` Agent document schema and format documentation.
- Add the Advanced route, sidebar entry, YAML editor, validation, change
summary, save progress, and reload recovery.
- Cover core settings, instruction files, skill pins, tool
installs/profiles/policies, channels, permissions, secret operations,
API keys, and revision restore.
- Add private-keyed configuration revisions checked under the agent
write lock. Read the current key through its owner so file-based
rotation does not require restarting the server. Preserve unchanged
secret markers at their original paths.
- Retain drafts and returned credentials after partial saves. Require
reload before retrying commands. Prevent duplicate submissions. Keep new
key tokens visible through rename and disable saves with an empty change
plan.
- Send only changed channel settings. Require explicit intent for shared
profile edits. Load destination instruction files when changing their
location.
- Update Storybook fixtures, verification maps, and regression tests.
Add browser acceptance through real APIs and PostgreSQL.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck` passes.
- `pnpm build` passes.
- The focused UI suite passes all 50 tests. The API/revision helper
suites pass all 93 tests.
- All 65 lifecycle tests pass with a dedicated PostgreSQL database. They
exercise real row locks, redaction, revision history, audit, and company
access.
- All six browser acceptance cases pass. They check saved settings and
clears, secret redaction, key creation/revocation, stale drafts,
lost-response recovery, instruction relocation, revision restore, and
key-token retention through rename. The tests use real resource APIs and
storage. The MCP target uses the existing local provider fixture. No
model run or provider login is claimed.
- Signing-key regressions cover both environment changes and real
in-place key-file rotation. The protected database save/fencing cases
pass after removing the cache. A local measurement of 1,000 file-backed
revision calculations took 48 ms.
- `pnpm check:token-gates`, `node scripts/check-maps.mjs`, and Storybook
catalog checks pass.
- The full [PR CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40725425470)
passes on `34ed97bbf9`: all 48 jobs, including all eight browser shards.
Greptile is 5/5 on this commit, with no unresolved review threads. This
final commit refreshes CI after a runner-routing fallback; its source
tree matches `fb4cf488cf`.
- Paperclip Review and Superagent Security Scan ended neutral because
their external agents did not complete a valid assessment/receipt.
Superagent passed on `fb4cf488cf`, which has the identical source tree.
One request to retry the final scan returned HTTP 404. Neither check
reports a code finding.
- The local full-suite attempt was blocked by host System V semaphore
exhaustion. Acceptance and lifecycle verification used an isolated
PostgreSQL 18 container. Earlier CI runners were interrupted. A local
combined run hit hook/test timeouts; the full 88-test route file passed
after the builds finished. The final full CI run passes. Earlier failure
logs and browser traces remain retained outside the repository.

To run the browser regression:

```sh
pnpm exec playwright test --config tests/e2e/playwright.config.ts tests/e2e/agent-configuration.spec.ts
```

## Risks

- Multi-resource saves are sequential. Earlier operations can remain
saved if a later operation fails. The editor reports the completed steps
and requires reload.
- Core settings and managed instruction files have atomic revision/hash
checks. Other unversioned resource writes and external supporting files
retain a race window after preflight.
- Shared profile definitions affect other bindings. The editor requires
`updateSharedDefinition: true` for those edits.
- The editor follows native service normalization and experimental
settings. Canonical reload can add generated access profiles or mask
environment values.
- New editor dependencies require the repository's normal automated
lockfile update. This pull request does not edit the lockfile or add a
database migration.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact current model version was not
exposed. The work used reasoning, repository tools, code execution, and
browser automation. Earlier work in this chat used the configured Codex
model before a model switch; its exact model ID and context window were
not exposed. The current context window size is also not exposed.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 835966dec8 Prepare agent-owned environments during hiring (#17761)
<!-- entire-trail-link-start -->
https://entire.com/gh/paperclipai/-/trails/1/changes/paperclip/1
<!-- entire-trail-link-end -->

## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages agents and their execution environments.
> - New agent setup saves an inactive agent before model connection
tests.
> - Some plugins need that agent to prepare its execution resource.
> - The wizard tested without the agent ID, while the setup hold
prevented preparation.
> - Environment changes also discarded the selected model account.
> - This change prepares the saved draft during setup and keeps normal
execution held.
> - Users can test the prepared resource before they finish hiring.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

An agent-owned plugin environment could not acquire a test lease during
hiring. Changing environments also returned the user to Connect and
cleared the selected account.

**Expected behavior**

Keep the selected account, invalidate its test, and prepare the saved
agent resource in the background. Test that same agent before finishing
setup.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Start a new Claude or Codex agent and select a saved account.
2. Change to an agent-owned plugin environment.
3. Try to finish setup or reconnect the account.

Related: #17750 defers probes until after hire submission. This change
implements preparation during the wizard instead. The related PR search
and ROADMAP review found no other implementation of this setup
preparation path.

## What Changed

- Add the optional `requiresAgent` driver declaration. Require agent
lifecycle participation when it is set.
- Prepare saved drafts on creation or environment changes. Keep the
setup hold and wait in `verifying` without background verification
scans.
- Bind tests to the saved agent. Return a warning without allocating a
lease when the required agent is absent or still preparing.
- Preserve the account and configuration step when the environment
changes. Save the selection and invalidate the old test.
- Show active preparation and support authorized retries. Keep approval,
company, budget, and normal task admission controls.
- Document the contract and cover lifecycle, lease, manifest, and wizard
behavior.

## Verification

- Server and UI TypeScript checks passed.
- 112 wizard and setup helper tests passed. The shared manifest suite
passed.
- 123 lifecycle, policy, lease, and environment-test API cases passed
after the approval-gate fix. The diagnostic and driver suites and all 80
agent adapter route tests also passed.
- Token gates, module boundaries, map validation, and whitespace checks
passed.
- All 66 lifecycle/policy cases passed after the stopping-draft
permission fix. The new real-DB route case verifies creator success,
other-creator denial, and refusal to complete a hire while stopping.
- Full workspace typecheck and build were attempted. Both stop at the
unchanged Rust Runner step because Cargo is not installed on this host.
- CI on 43be3c93d passed all automated checks, including full test
shards, typecheck, build, Rust checks, browser suites, and canary
checks:
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40368174530.
- The full local repository test command was started. Two unchanged
workspace tests assume Git's initial branch is master; this host
defaults to main. Both fail in isolation under the host default and pass
with process-scoped init.defaultBranch=master. The broad run was stopped
after those confirmed fixture failures; CI supplies the full clean
check.
- Early new-test failures were fixture collisions and an unscoped sweep
assertion; the fixtures and assertion were corrected. One route-suite
load raced with SDK output regeneration; rebuilding first and running
the suite afterward passed.
- Initial CI exposed a route mock missing the new prerequisite lookup.
The fixture was updated and a real HTTP no-lease case was added; all 54
cases in that route suite pass. Security review identified allocation
before required approval; the new approval gate and its tests address
it.
- CI on 50b5a08af reported 32 of 33 expected calls in the unchanged
cleanup-history scheduling test. Its isolated case passed locally
without cleanup-code changes; the original failure remains recorded and
the final CI run passes on the current head.
- Standard Greptile reviewed 43be3c93d at 5/5. A subsequent deeper
review identified runner selection, stale detail reads, error retention,
and test file size issues; 70343387b addresses all four with resolved
threads. Standard review returned 5/5 on that commit and again on
rebased head fda42c5ab. The rebase preserves master's new managed
environment skill declarations alongside requiresAgent. Full CI on
fda42c5ab passes: 55 successful checks, two intentional skips, no
failures. Run:
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40405121641.
- After those fixes, 133 UI tests and 61 lifecycle/policy cases pass;
all eight focused UI regressions fail against the previous
implementation and pass with the fix. Token, map, and whitespace gates
pass. The stale-read fixture initially omitted the setup URL because
navigation is mocked; following the URL activates the real detail query
and reproduces the race.
- UI TypeScript passes. This host's server dependency links now point to
a separate scratch checkout lacking requiresAgent, so the ordinary
server check reports that missing property. A no-emit check pinned to
this branch's shared declarations passes; it disables declaration
generation and supplies explicit local type roots. The first temporary
configuration lacked those type roots; the corrected configuration
passes. CI remains the full workspace verification.
- After rebasing onto 8373d7867, all 133 UI, 61 lifecycle/policy, and 44
manifest cases pass again, as do UI TypeScript, token, map, and
whitespace checks. The server no-emit check now hits three mismatched
SDK/Runner declarations from the scratch dependency links; these are
outside this change. Full CI builds the complete dependency set.
- Review cycle: the first Apex review scored 3/5 with four findings. All
were fixed together, the branch was rebased to resolve a schema
conflict, full CI and standard Greptile passed, and a second Apex review
returned 5/5 on fda42c5ab with zero new comments. All six review threads
are resolved, and the PR is conflict-free. Review:
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/17761#issuecomment-6422635718.
- No live provider resource was created and no deployment was performed.

## Risks

Plugins must opt in and ship a compatible declaration. Companies
requiring hire approval keep drafts paused and defer allocation and
verification until approval. Other companies prepare drafts during the
wizard under their existing agent-creation authority; the setup hold
still blocks ordinary work. Preparation uses existing lifecycle
ownership, retry, and cleanup paths. The open wizard polls only while
preparation or stopping is active. No database migration is required.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with reasoning, tool use, and code
execution. The exact serving model ID and context window size are not
exposed.

DottaandPaperclip 9bf7dc0c8f feat(agents): bulk edit connections and default models (#17215)
Add harness-scoped bulk connection and default-model edits to the agent roster, with compatible choices, change previews, per-agent save results, and retries.

Use an icon-based harness filter, keep agent rows readable, remove the status selector and selection hint, and redirect legacy status URLs to the full roster.

Preserve authorization, audit history, unrelated settings, and optimistic concurrency checks through the existing agent update route.

DottaandPaperclip 30b753f614 perf(budgets): scope accounting and deliver enforcement asynchronously (#17046)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their paid work.
> - Budgets must prevent new work and stop reported overruns.
> - Cost settlement also ran serial lifecycle reconciliation for every
eligible company agent.
> - That made request latency grow with unrelated idle agents and
delayed results on stop delivery.
> - This change separates atomic admission and accounting from durable
asynchronous enforcement.
> - Scoped live usage detects overruns without writing provisional
ledger charges.
> - The result is constant query scope for ordinary settlement and
recoverable stop delivery.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Settlement and budget checks entered company-wide lifecycle
reconciliation. A company with 1,000 unrelated idle agents performed
1,001 accounting transactions for one ordinary cost evaluation. User
requests could also wait for provider termination. Running usage
checkpoints did not enforce reported monetary exposure.

**Expected behavior**

Keep the final reservation gate authoritative. Commit charges, scope
blocks, and enforcement intent before returning. Deliver stop requests
after commit. Read only applicable policies and execution scopes for
ordinary charges. Stop long-running work when supported reported or
priced usage establishes an overrun.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Create a disposable company with one company budget and idle agents.
2. Evaluate a charge below the budget with 0, 17, and 1,000 unrelated
idle agents.
3. Compare query counts, company accounting transactions, and duration.
4. Use the controlled partial-usage and delayed-stop fixtures to check
enforcement and request responsiveness.

**Paperclip version or commit**

The measured baseline is `6c9b87d0922f1ebfc43e8b0c36889ac5ba7b9837` from
`master`.

Related public work: Refs #16976, #2006, #3539, #13763, #14296, #16853,
#13075. These cover the affected service charge, cancellation, and
accounting paths. This change removes their shared reconciliation
overhead.

## What Changed

- Batch applicable policy exposure under the existing company accounting
lock. Preserve exact fractional money and zero-reservation dispatch
fences.
- Commit a durable final budget dispatch claim before provider I/O.
Retain a separate final issue/run ownership transaction through
synchronous handoff, without holding the company accounting lock or
awaiting provider work. Preserve native recovery lease checks and
duplicate handoff fencing. Browser handoff rechecks current policy; it
reuses a consumed rate slot only for the identical policy generation.
- Separate ledger spend, live observed spend, and effective held
capacity. Use the maximum of reservation and live observation for each
unfinished operation.
- Deliver budget cancellation through the existing coordinator.
Revalidate generations and persist queued/running stop fences before
external termination. Bound stop concurrency to four.
- Apply agent holds only to the affected agent. Project budgets leave
other projects running. Project real company transitions in bounded
lifecycle batches.
- Replace periodic broad reconciliation with durable pending work,
startup repair, receipt replay, and concrete retry/window deadlines.
Retain drain and idle-safety checks.
- Enforce accepted cumulative usage checkpoints without provisional
charges. Final accounting atomically replaces live exposure and settles
reservations.
- Add operator-gated budget spans, regression coverage, map updates, and
a real-PostgreSQL comparison harness. No schema or first-party telemetry
change.

## Verification

- Full workspace `pnpm -r typecheck` passes on the final ownership fix,
rebased onto `bbcf5dfe98`. Production `pnpm build` passes on final head
`4c5f4de8b1`. Map, module-boundary, token, and Storybook catalog checks
pass.
- Focused real-PostgreSQL coverage includes the 292-case rebased
accounting/dispatch run, 63 browser cases, 52 run-control/cancellation
cases, 42 policy-generation cases, 77 lifecycle/commentary cases, and
the exact Muse confirmation regression. Native executor unit coverage
passes all 768 cases. Final ownership coverage passes: 74
adapter/use-case cases, nine public regression cases, and the additional
deleted-project race. These exercise competing ownership, budget changes
and charges between phases, zero/nonzero duplicate claims, rollback,
recovery contention, read-only capacity rechecks, and controlled HTTP
startup after commit. Another 74 pure/startup/tracing cases pass. The
complete CI matrix and both 5/5 reviews passed on `1ac9b58`; its
external security scan identified a stale-owner handoff race. The final
fix restores synchronous issue/run ownership fencing after the
accounting transaction commits. Final head `8e84f55ce8` has fresh
Greptile 5/5 with zero new comments, Paperclip review 5/5, and a passing
security scan. The complete latest-head [CI
matrix](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39535189808)
passes, including budget, browser, Runner, build, and canary jobs. The
unchanged Runner close fixture passed on its sole same-head job retry.
- Broad local `pnpm test:run` invocations were stopped before required
source updates (rebase and review fixes). They are not claimed as full
passes. Final full-suite coverage comes from the complete latest-head CI
matrix; local focused coverage and the incomplete broad invocations are
reported separately.
- Reproduce performance with `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsx
../scripts/benchmark-budget-enforcement.ts
--baseline-ref=6c9b87d0922f1ebfc43e8b0c36889ac5ba7b9837`; repeat with
`--reverse`. The harness uses disposable real PostgreSQL, 20 warm
samples per variant/count, and records raw timings, SQL/lock counts,
agent reads, unchanged agent state, and query plans. Final
production-source measurement revision:
`eff713a4f72c7f4b7a4002a701cb481d4bfccd95`; the extended harness is

- These measurements use local PostgreSQL 18.1 and Node 26.4.0 arm64.
They isolate the cost-evaluation core and complete admission path,
without hosted-region or provider latency. Prior-revision reversed-order
controls also preserved the constant query counts; the final
measurements above use the final production source.
- Complete reserve → final ownership gate → immediate offline provider
result is measured separately, with one responsible agent and one active
operation at each unrelated-agent count. Admission p95 baseline/new: 0
agents **11.54 / 29.77 ms**; 17 agents **9.31 / 27.62 ms**; 1,000 agents
**24.51 / 74.05 ms**. Baseline admission was already scoped; the
stronger final fence adds bounded overhead. New counts stay constant at
53 Drizzle statements, three transactions, two company-accounting locks,
and five agent-reading statements bound to the responsible agent. Zero
unrelated-agent reads, exactly one provider callback per sample, and no
leftover runs or holds. All admission scenarios stay below 250 ms. No
external provider calls are included.
- The partial-usage/delayed-termination fixture passed 20/20: receipt
persistence p95 13 ms, receipt return to observed durable Stop fence p95
28 ms, complete receipt-start-to-fence p95 50 ms, unrelated database
request p95 1 ms while termination was blocked. After releasing the
controlled termination fixture, acknowledgement p95 was 14 ms. These are
separately measured phases; fixture acknowledgement is not live-provider
termination latency.
- Models and provider deadlines are unchanged. No deployment, live
inference, or staging acceptance is claimed. A quiet 30-minute follow-up
waits for the merged revision on staging, then repeats classifier and
controlled budget-stop acceptance in staging, recording hosted
bookkeeping, queue delay, and actual provider acknowledgement
separately.
- Development failures retained: finalizer notification regressions
(fixed; 27/27 affected cases passed), invalid browser admission fixture
assumptions (fixed; browser coverage now passes 63/63), and first-head
lifecycle/dispatch CI regressions (reproduced and repaired). A
prior-head Cases E2E test hit its unchanged announcement-dismiss handler
race while opening a filter; the same journey passed on `1ac9b58`. The
external security review then found a stale-owner race between
accounting commit and provider entry; final verification covers a
competing run in that gap while retaining provider I/O outside the
accounting lock. Early PostgreSQL startup attempts hit local semaphore
pressure; serial reruns succeeded. The final-head Runner lane had one
failure among 1,823 tests: the unchanged `timeout-attachment` fixture
failed at its first process close after 6.28 seconds. The sole same-head
job retry passed all 1,819 active tests (four skipped), including that
fixture in 1.85 seconds. Three isolated local probes could not run
correctly because the Rust fake-provider fixture binary was absent;
cleanup masked the original startup failure. CI builds that fixture
through its normal lane. These probes are inconclusive and are not
counted as passes.

## Risks

- This changes accounting, lifecycle, and cancellation ordering. Durable
generations, source/sequence checks, ownership leases, and company
locking remain required for correctness.
- Provider stop acknowledgement can be slow or fail. Stop intent remains
pending until existing termination proof succeeds; cancelled row status
alone does not acknowledge delivery.
- Mid-run limits depend on provider usage reports or supported price
calculations. Providers that report only at completion cannot provide
exact mid-call detection.
- Signals are process-local wake hints for the supported
single-active-writer model. Durable state and startup recovery remain
authoritative.
- There are no migrations, new queue tables, or cached balances. Repeat
the classifier and controlled budget-stop acceptance after normal
rollout.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with reasoning, tool use, code execution,
and parallel coding agents. The host does not expose the exact backend
model revision or context-window size, so those values are not asserted.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 79b2bf78dd Create agent records when onboarding names are submitted (#17005)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Core onboarding selects an agent and connects its provider account.
> - The current flow creates the agent record after authentication.
> - Setup needs a stable agent identity as soon as the user submits its
name.
> - This PR saves a paused setup record on name submission and finishes
the hire on that same record.
> - The existing sandbox authentication and approval paths continue to
apply.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Core agent lifecycle, shared validators, and onboarding UI.

**Current behavior**

Onboarding creates the database record at the final hire step. Earlier
authentication and saved setup have no agent record.

**Proposed behavior**

Create a paused agent with a setup hold when the user submits its name.
Do this before adapter selection or authentication. Update that same
record after adapter selection. Reuse its ID on retries and saved setup.
Finish that record through the existing hire path.

**Reason and benefit**

Give setup a stable identity without coupling this refactor to computer
provisioning or a new execution backend.

**Breaking changes**

Incomplete setup now leaves an inactive agent record. Existing clients
can still create and hire agents without the new optional fields. The
sandbox authentication flow and API key support remain in place.

**Additional context**

Requested Core-only refactor. Related work: #15422 changes runner
defaults. This PR preserves those choices. No duplicate early-record
refactor was found in the issue and PR search.

## What Changed

- Save the agent when the user submits its name in both onboarding entry
points. Use a provisional adapter until the user chooses one. Reopen
name-only drafts at adapter selection.
- Add retry-safe setup creation and same-record hire completion. Keep
approval checks at final hire.
- Save and restore setup configuration in both onboarding entry points.
Show Finish setup for paused setup agents.
- Restrict setup changes to authorized board users. Block generic resume
until setup finishes.
- Add lifecycle, authorization, connection, and UI coverage. Update the
specification and feature maps.

## Verification

- Latest focused server run: 126 lifecycle and AI-connection tests
passed after the Apex fixes. An earlier broader run passed 301
lifecycle, instruction, adapter-validation, and AI-connection tests.
Earlier authentication, retry, cross-company, and direct-create
regressions also passed.
- Name-save verification: 336 tests across the wizard, naming dialog,
New agent, action-button, and wizard-step suites passed. Coverage
includes retry identity, repeated submission, closing during a save,
saved-model restoration, and a disabled process adapter.
- Shared, server, and UI TypeScript checks passed. The latest UI package
check and direct server TypeScript check passed. The server package
preparation command could not finish locally because Cargo is
unavailable; full build preparation runs in CI. Map checks, token gates,
and `git diff --check` passed; each pushed diff was scanned for
credentials and PII.
- All six onboarding browser tests passed together with installed Chrome
against a fresh throwaway instance after the Apex fixes. They include
numbered duplicate names, first-time Copilot without a connected
account, and Grok’s saved model. They verify early persistence in both
entry points, closing and reopening a name-only draft, same-record
adapter selection, sandbox sign-in, login reload, and failed-connection
gating. Provider responses are simulated; Core persistence is real.
- Regression coverage includes incomplete Copilot creation versus final
validation, Kimi settings through redacted responses, stale local
drafts, company switches during creation, saved environments, and
provider changes with personal/shared old bindings.
- Apex found five name-only setup gaps: numbered names, early Copilot
account validation, the Grok model default, same-name draft ownership,
and provisional runner restoration. The fixes preserve server names,
defer implicit account binding until hire, set Grok’s model, avoid
name-based reuse of unfinished records, and restore Auto for pending
adapter choices. UI, database, and browser regressions cover these
cases.
- Standard Greptile found a Grok provider mismatch in the new adapter
save. The save now uses ACPX with the Grok profile. Both the 129-test
dialog/setup run and a real-API browser regression passed after the fix.
The first browser attempt stopped on an ambiguous empty-roster button
selector; it now scopes the click to the toolbar.
- Moving the save point exposed a saved-model reset and timing
assumptions in the same-name and portal fixtures. The source choice now
preserves the restored model, and tests cover same-name recovery without
a second hire.
- Initial CI exposed direct-create compatibility, concurrent setup
effects, fixture assumptions, and a missing-fields assumption in the
provider-validation guard. These were fixed and verified locally. Review
findings were addressed with authorization, recovery,
credential-persistence, and restored-configuration regressions.
- The final desktop capture passed after host resource cleanup. A repeat
first failed before Core started because macOS had exhausted
shared-memory IDs. Standalone PostgreSQL initialization reproduced the
same error. Releasing only unattached control segments from this task’s
stopped test databases allowed the unchanged revision to pass. No Core
or system setting changed.
- Local database tests required port access outside the sandbox. Missing
declared development dependencies were supplied outside the branch. No
live provider sign-in was tested locally.
- [Full monorepo
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39522434236)
is green on `82b82fec189a172a885d4dd565ae2f4a18c73efc`. Standard
Greptile scored 5/5 with zero new comments (check `118969424903`). The
subsequent Apex review also scored 5/5 with zero new comments (check
`118972866331`) on that same commit. All review threads are resolved.
- The separate Superagent Security scan returned neutral/inconclusive
because its pinned merge-base checkout failed or timed out. GitHub
returned 404 for check and suite rerun requests. This is not a
successful security scan; the CI workflow and other security checks
passed.

## Risks

- Users can leave inactive setup records behind, including after name
submission alone. These records cannot run until hire completes.
- Setup completion touches hiring and approval boundaries. Tests cover
retries, company isolation, creator permissions, and approval snapshots.
- An uncertain credential-save result retains its new secret reference
for retry. A confirmed client rejection removes only credentials staged
by that attempt.
- No schema migration or VM provisioning change is required.
Agent-computer integration is out of scope.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with repository search, code editing, and
tool execution. The exact deployment ID and context window are not
exposed in this session.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 5f5602bba7 feat(plugins): synchronize standing connection assignments (#16603)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Lifecycle plugins prepare agent runtimes outside the control plane.
> - They need committed connection assignment changes without polling.
> - A reader and its revision hooks must cover the same fields.
> - This pull request adds a bounded standing-assignment snapshot and
its matching hooks.
> - Plugins can react to assignment changes while execution keeps its
existing access checks.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

The agent runtime reader does not expose standing connection
assignments. Changes to connection installs, active profiles, and
connector feature switches do not request synchronization. Adding
company-wide invalidation also exposes lock inversions in assignment
writers and AI adoption.

**Expected behavior**

The owning lifecycle plugin can read a bounded assignment snapshot.
Every committed change to its stored fields advances the runtime
revision. Rollback removes both the change and its event. Assignment
writers finish without a lock-order cycle.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Install a connection or bind an active profile to an agent.
2. Read its runtime inputs through the owning lifecycle plugin.
3. Rename or disable the connection, revoke the assignment, or switch
connector features.
4. Expect a committed runtime event and an updated snapshot without
periodic polling.

**Additional context**

Extracted from #16503. Catalog publication #16602 and the separate test
maintenance PRs #16601 and #16610 are merged. This PR now targets master
and is the active review. Tool-definition hooks #16604 and
access/credential hooks #16605 remain drafts without review requests.

## What Changed

- Add SDK types and an owning-plugin runtime snapshot for installed
connections, active profile IDs, and effective connector feature
switches.
- Reject more than 512 connections or 128 active profiles instead of
returning partial data.
- Add migration 0354 for the exact stored fields used by the snapshot,
with transaction-coalesced invalidation. Agent-targeted bindings and
installs notify only their old/new target agents;
project/routine/issue/gateway bindings are outside the snapshot and
produce no notification.
- Use ordered agent locks that are compatible with foreign-key
references and exclude runtime readers. Prelock complete old/new target
sets before replacing assignments or restoring managed profiles.
- Record one company baseline at delivery startup for process-managed
feature overlays.
- Lock assignment inputs before install saves, task completion, and
email assignment. Setup finalization reads the locked connection state
and prelocks company agents before activating, re-enabling, or reviving
a profile.
- Make profile binding and reassignment writes transactional and lock
parent profiles first. Keep target validation and profile/detail reads
on the reserved transaction connection, including with a one-connection
pool.
- Lock company agents in order before validated AI adoption. Keep
adoption and shared configuration writes at `FOR NO KEY UPDATE`,
avoiding an upgrade that can deadlock foreign-key inserts during gateway
creation. Configuration fields cannot change agent identity; lifecycle
transitions and deletion retain their existing locks.
- Document supported coverage and the inputs reserved for later PRs.

## Verification

- Thirteen affected suites passed: 757 tests covering runtime
hooks/assignments/skills, concurrent skill publication, tool
access/catalog, task connection intents, lifecycle delivery, email, AI
accounts, migration histories, snapshot drift, and the agent lifecycle
module. This includes the merged catalog PR's OAuth and
overlapping-refresh regressions.
- The assignment suite passes all 24 cases, including bounded snapshots,
company/agent isolation, rollback, health-field no-ops, process-start
feature overlays, and real lock contention.
- Four one-connection PostgreSQL regressions reproduce the earlier
helper-read hangs before the correction; bind, unbind, delete, and
reassign complete with it. The earlier adoption/gateway probe exposed
both lock upgrades: changing only validation still deadlocks in shared
configuration. Current scoped coverage verifies adoption with
agent-targeted binding writes; gateway-only bindings no longer
invalidate this snapshot.
- The original ordered-adoption regression reproduces PostgreSQL `40P01`
without ordered company-agent locking. Scoped-recipient tests reproduce
unrelated-peer journaling before the trigger correction and verify
repeated bind/unbind operations leave peers untouched, ignored binding
types produce no events, both reassignment recipients are reached, and
coalescing remains intact.
- Six replacement contention cases cover installs, existing setup,
activation, re-enabling, profile revival, and profile reassignment.
Negative controls reproduce `40P01` without the corresponding
target/company prelocks; all cases pass with the guards. Activation
decisions use the connection row reread under lock.
- An initial contention fixture failed because its settings connection
lacked an MCP URL. Supplying the fixture URL and controlled lookup
corrected that test setup error.
- Server typecheck, database migration numbering/safety, five-snapshot
retention, feature-map structural validation, and `git diff --check`
passed. Migration metadata preserves historical journal entries and adds
no schema change. The complete diff was reviewed for secrets and
personal data before push.
- Earlier hosted PR CI runs 38983440861 and 38985530069 passed; the
superseded promotion run 38983440470 was cancelled. Superagent
acknowledged the recipient fix and accepted the documented company-wide
cost at `359b5b2f30a8a0248177367e458663d5379810d1`. Its two standard
Greptile summaries were conditional on a later setup correction and were
not counted as independent acceptance; the setup correction is now
included here.
- At `7da246aab46274db1a120a0546abbb404c5427c7`, hosted PR run
38986958988 passed: all 55 checks succeeded, with two optional Storybook
checks skipped. Superagent passed, all review threads are resolved, and
standard Greptile independently returned 5/5 with no blocking findings
(review completed 2026-10-17 00:40 UTC). Apex independently returned 5/5
with no actionable findings (completed 2026-10-17 00:50 UTC). CI was
rechecked after Apex and remains green; the branch is mergeable against
master. Full local build and repository-wide tests were not run.

## Risks

Migration 0354 adds database functions and triggers without changing
table schema. Apply it through the normal migration flow. Agent-targeted
bindings and installs only notify their affected agents. Explicit
company-wide assignments, connection metadata, profile
activation/removal, and connector feature switches retain synchronous,
transaction-atomic company fanout. Each such transaction takes ordered
row locks and inserts up to one connector runtime event per eligible
company agent: O(number of eligible agents) work and journal storage,
with no company-size cap or cross-transaction mutation quota. This
remains an intentional scope tradeoff for this PR; deferred fanout is
not implemented. Many of these conservative changes can request
preparation even if an individual snapshot stays unchanged. Snapshot
limits fail closed. This PR provides desired assignments, not
credentials or task authorization. Later PRs must add mutation coverage
before consumers can rely on immediate synchronization of tool
definitions or credentials.

## Model Used

execution, and testing. The exact deployment model ID and context window
are not exposed in this session.

DottaandPaperclip adb69e8f09 feat: default new Codex agents to Paperclip Runner on Linux and macOS (#15683)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source control plane for agent companies.
> - People choose a harness when creating an agent.
> - The server should resolve that harness to a qualified runner.
> - Codex is the first harness in the staged default rollout.
> - Saved agents must retain their execution choices.
> - New Codex agents therefore use Paperclip Runner on qualified
macOS/Linux targets, with an explicit Legacy override.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #16028, #15555, #15673, #15422, #15631, #15926, #15932, #16149.

The runtime/install prerequisite and release repair are merged. This
slice owns Codex creation, setup, configuration and preservation. Other
harness defaults remain unchanged. It adds no database migration;
incoming master migrations, required maps and regression coverage are
retained.

## What Changed

- Resolve `runner: auto | paperclip | legacy` at the common creation
boundary across onboarding, API/CLI, hires, built-ins, plugins and
imports. Freeze pending hires and export resolved execution choices.
- Preserve existing runners on upgrades, unrelated edits and import
updates, including compatible accounts, workspace settings, Codex effort
and intentional clears.
- Use the underlying harness picker and branding; put the runner
override in Advanced. Use the shared dropdown and update
production-component stories and creation contracts.
- Support qualified Apple Silicon, Intel Mac, Linux x64 and Linux ARM64.
Linux requires GNU libc 2.39+. Disabled, external, unsupported and
unqualified combinations retain their applicable Legacy execution.
- Test the selected runtime/account/model/environment. Ordinary Connect
probes eligible immutable managed targets and refreshes scoped
discovery. Creation/discovery do not provision. Auth, dependency,
incompatible-setting and cleanup failures remain actionable without
changing runners.
- Keep setup probes read-only, preserve local/SSH isolation and resolve
packaged assets before staging credentials. Bound cleanup reads by the
remaining absolute deadline; physically close every owned ingress socket
before endpoint release. Unconfirmed cleanup retains recovery state.
- Preserve validated completed-onboarding callbacks through startup
recovery. First file-producing work belongs to the child task and uses
the existing dependency/block handoff and task-scoped registration.
- Reuse existing E2E fixtures, artifact checks, reporting and controls.
Keep Docker/Cargo/native compilation remote. Paperclip tarballs contain
no Codex payloads; official optional npm platform dependencies remain.

## Verification

Current tested head: `1c03a8815672d82c264a9b08d4ea1984e8fae107`.
**Merge-ready: required CI, fresh review, package qualification, Mac
core acceptance and Test task/follow-up acceptance pass.** The existing
attachment and native-continuity oracles independently verify both Test
downloads, run attribution and unchanged native/provider/workspace
identities. The maintainer authorized a code-owner-review exception for
this PR only. The first Test setup failure and normal Board
completion-review friction are retained below. Actual post-merge
packages and private Cloud distribution remain separate qualification
gates.

- [Current
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38564241625):
all 48 ordinary jobs and required verify/E2E pass. Attempt 1 retained
six simultaneous host-shutdown cancellations. One failed-only retry
passes those six lanes and two aggregates, preserving 40 successes.
Actual integration checkout `53104c1` combines this head with master
`c80`; it is not relabeled as the branch tree. Fresh exact-head Greptile
5/5, 30 resolved threads, no actionable findings.
- [Exact-source package
qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38565287239):
nine applicable jobs pass, nine conditional jobs skip. Four remote
native producers; Linux x64 clean install; Intel Mac, Apple Silicon and
Linux ARM64 native startup/physical cleanup controls. All 18
tarballs/four daemon source/hash/manifest bindings and 343 migrations
through 0344 verify. No Codex payload is packed. These hosted tarballs
are not a published npm canary.
- Normal Apple Silicon installation and credential-free native
startup/cleanup pass using the packaged daemon, with no source build or
provider turn. Fresh installed DB initialization passes. Upgrade
651a→1c03 preserves all three complete execution configs, accounts, ten
recorded run profiles, paused budgets, active incidents, cost summaries
and two historical unpriced events. Historical recovery state is
retained.
- Cleanup regressions: four delayed-read baseline failures become 15
passing deadline/authority controls. No-acknowledgement and prior-error
socket ownership regressions become 12 passing controls. Direct
runtime/server types, maps: 35 areas / 176 IDs, diff checks and
independent reviews pass. Permission/auth/reconnect policy and the
10-second setup budget remain intact.
- Existing source coverage includes creation/selection/imports, pending
approvals, recovery, account/lifecycle handling, mounted forms,
dropdowns and E2E support. Full typechecks/tests/build/token and
applicable Storybook checks pass in the recorded current CI; no
duplicate suite or weakened grader.
- Literal 9546 live Mac proof: ordinary Auto Codex onboarding, useful
document, real completed-child callback/reply, seven successful native
runs, manual follow-up and independently downloaded1,101-byte child
file. Existing Legacy title edit/reload preserves execution; two real
Legacy runs produce independently checked15/34-byte files. These remain
historical source records.
- Current literal 1c03 Mac core acceptance passes independent checks:
ordinary Auto native Codex onboarding without runner override; only
timeout 180 seconds/concurrency 1 saved; six successful native runs and
six serialized turns (maximum overlap 1); both same-task continuity
checks and five mechanical callback checks; actual rendered parent reply
and exact child downloads. The useful handoff advances from revision 1
to 2. Both files are 48 bytes, SHA-256
`8b742bd4e8123a7c078f0a8d9f3449fbfa8a320d7d90be641a2818db3c53d92c` and
`f42db9774fa06e804ab7d596fc8b922a2b638921c418b87d0111151d290a6afe`;
exactly one byte changes and old history remains. The agent is paused
with zero active runs/errors. Both artifact work products have
`isPrimary=false`, and descriptive titles fail a stricter title-helper
assumption; these retained results are scoped editorial follow-up, not
new merge gates. Six source-bound screenshots are uploaded and verified
in the private primary QA report.
- [Literal 9546 managed
proof](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-38485488621-1/index.html):
original 19 assertions and completed judge pass, four native turns,
child-bound240-byte file and session/workspace continuity. Checkout
reports a verified generated target-lock mutation; full final porcelain
was not retained. Signed execution-image identity remains separate from
Core source.
- Actual 651a Test deployment succeeds on one owned/pinned target. One
ordinary Auto API-key Connect then fails native cleanup before hire.
Controller turn/drain/suspend completion and service-recorded
environment cleanup are observed; they do not certify physical deletion
or native authority retirement. Failure/recovery/unknown holds are
retained. No Legacy switch or unchanged paid retry. The two source
repairs above require actual treatment.
- [Current immutable Core
preview](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38570365725)
and matching DB/shared artifacts pass. One owned, pinned Test target
serves exact `1c03`; identical migration history correctly skips the
migrator. Ordinary Auto Codex Connect succeeds and hires native; saved
native selection and QA bounds survive reload. The initial child
preparation attempt fails before provider work, with actual stdout
identifying `renewal_deadline`; its trigger remains unknown and the
failure is retained. Normal Board **Try again** and **Resume** recover
the child to Done, producing a browser-verified 44-byte file, SHA-256
`0a8458b1efcc2d7a0d815689458c4caab039a46c7c7a3e5805de6bc8b1a96ecc`. The
actual parent callback reports the completed child document/file. The
existing validator requires a parent-owned attachment, so recovery
enters normal Review; after byte checking, normal **Approve completion**
reaches parent Done. No forced status or duplicate parent file is used.
The validator is unchanged from integrated and current master.
Autonomous initial callback-to-Done is not proven. The same-child
follow-up completes document revision 2 and publishes a second
independently downloaded 44-byte file, SHA-256
`22022257300fae762784632d08d3bbe0bab61e2ce81f91864a14dcd7aa464591`; only
the revision digit changes. The unchanged existing native-continuity and
attachment oracles pass. All ten recorded runs are terminal: nine native
successes and the retained pre-provider setup failure. The QA agent is
paused with zero active runs. The pre-existing parent evidence scope
mismatch is a separate follow-up, with ordinary completion review
exercised rather than a forced status or relaxed validation. This
unsigned Core preview remains distinct from post-merge private Cloud
composition.

## Risks

- Saved agents are not migrated. Explicit runner changes use normal
configuration/session rules; historical runs retain their recorded
execution.
- Native readiness depends on verified assets and server-owned target
qualification. A Legacy probe, HTTP200 or successful account save cannot
prove native readiness.
- Recovery exceptions remain restricted to validated
completed-onboarding reports; process-loss, ownership and terminal-state
safeguards remain active. Unexecuted live journeys stay open.
- Linux ARM paid tasks, Windows, Alpine and 32-bit ARM remain deferred.
Cold Cargo cache misses are recorded; no warm-cache speedup is claimed.
- Historical invoices/physical cleanup remain unconfirmed and held.
After merge, exact published npm canary, signed standard image/migrator,
private composition and serving/live acceptance still require
qualification. Production deployment/default promotion is not
authorized.

ba4fac585d feat(agents): show who created an agent in shared companies (#16055)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - A company in Paperclip can have more than one human member, and each
member can create agents
> - The app does not record which person created an agent
> - When two or more people share a company, members cannot see who
added an agent or who to ask about it
> - This pull request records the creator of each agent and shows the
creator on the agent Overview tab
> - The benefit is clear ownership of agents in shared companies, with
no change for single-user companies

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

No public issue exists. This description follows `feature_request.yml`.

**Subsystem affected**

Agents: the agent data model, the agent create path on the server, and
the agent Overview tab in the board UI.

**Problem or motivation**

Paperclip does not record which human user created an agent. When more
than one human user works in a company, the agent page does not tell
members who created the agent.

**Proposed solution**

Record the user ID of the creator when a human creates an agent. Show
"Created by <name>" on the Identity card of the agent Overview tab. Show
this row only when the company has two or more human members. Do not
count the synthetic local Board principal as a human member. Do not show
the local Board as a creator.

**Alternatives considered**

Count human users across the full instance. We did not do this. An
instance-wide count tells a member of one company that other companies
have users. The creator is always a member of the agent's company, so
the company count is sufficient.

**Roadmap alignment**

`ROADMAP.md` has no item for agent ownership. This change is small and
additive.

## What Changed

- Add the nullable column `agents.created_by_user_id`
(`packages/db/src/schema/agents.ts`, migration `0343_new_mentor.sql`).
- Set the column in the single agent insert path
(`server/src/modules/agent-lifecycle/adapters/records.ts`). The value
comes from the authenticated user actor. The server ignores a creator
value in the request body. Agents that agents or the system create keep
`null`.
- Backfill existing agents in the migration. The backfill uses the
earliest `agent.created` or `agent.hire_created` activity row that a
user actor wrote in the same company.
- Add `createdByUserId` to the shared `Agent` type
(`packages/shared/src/types/agent.ts`).
- Add `ui/src/lib/agent-creator.ts`. It decides if the UI shows the
creator row and it resolves the creator name. If the creator left the
company, the row shows "Former member".
- Add the "Created by" row to the Identity card in
`ui/src/pages/AgentDetail.tsx`. If the company user directory request
fails, the row shows "Could not load creator". The row does not
disappear silently.
- Add the Storybook story `Pages/Agent Detail → Shared Company Shows
Creator`.
- Document the column in `doc/SPEC-implementation.md` §7.2.

## Verification

- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db typecheck` passes. This includes the
migration numbering and migration safety checks.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/shared typecheck` passes.
- `ui`: `tsc --noEmit` passes.
- `server`: `vitest run
src/modules/agent-lifecycle/__tests__/lifecycle.test.ts` passes (49/49).
Two new tests:
- The server records the creator from the actor and ignores a creator
value in the request body.
- The backfill takes the earliest user activity row. It skips agent
actors and rows from other companies.
- `server`: `vitest run src/__tests__/built-in-agents.test.ts` passes
(40/40). A new test checks that a built-in agent enabled by a human
records that human, and that automatic provisioning stays unattributed.
The gated (pending-approval) provisioning test also asserts the creator.
`src/__tests__/built-in-agent-routes.test.ts` also passes.
- `ui`: `vitest run src/lib/agent-creator.test.ts
src/pages/AgentOverview.test.tsx` passes (10/10). The tests cover these
cases: the row shows with two or more humans, the row stays hidden with
one human plus the Board, the UI never shows the Board as the creator,
the row shows an error when the directory request fails, and the row
stays hidden (no error) for agents with no creator or the Board as
creator. The last case fails without the fix.
- The current Storybook catalog uses source annotations and generated
indexes. `node scripts/storybook-catalog.mjs --check` passes (264 story
files, 2,514 stories). The merge keeps the authored catalog deletion
from master.
- `pnpm check:token-gates` is clean.
- Screenshots from the Storybook story (fake data: two human members,
Alice Admin and Bob Builder, plus the local Board). The red "Could not
load public key" text is a Storybook artifact: the story has no fixture
for the public key request. The existing `Dashboard` story shows the
same text.

**Two or more human members: the Identity card shows "Created by".**

**One human member plus the local Board: the row stays hidden.**

row](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/paperclipai/paperclip/9b62bd2ea6cf984ce6745f08cc45f44ddf00fb51/pr-16055/identity-single-human.png)

The images are on the separate branch `pr-assets/agent-created-by`. They
are not in this PR and do not go to `master`.
- Manual check: open Storybook at `Pages/Agent Detail → Shared Company
Shows Creator`. The Identity card shows "Created by Alice Admin". The
`Dashboard` story has one human, so it does not show the row.
- Final focused verification on
`5a02350cf16050a3cf3cb3f8dc061fe61758c60d`: all 99 tests pass across the
two UI suites, built-in-agent suite, and lifecycle suite. The backfill
test applies the complete migration twice. The migration uses `ADD
COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS` and preserves the company-scoped backfill.
Migration numbering and token checks pass.
- Full repository typecheck, build, and Storybook build pass. The
generated creator story ID is present. A Chromium check renders the
production agent page fixture and verifies the creator row and Alice
Admin name. Map checks and their 21 tests pass. A fresh Apex review is
5/5 on the current head with no unresolved findings. All 54 successful
CI checks pass on this head, with two intentional skips, including all
general and serialized test shards, E2E, typecheck, and build. The
workspaces-b job passed after rerunning a runner shutdown; no source
change was needed. The separate, unsharded local `pnpm test:run`
invocation has not completed; complete suite verification comes from CI.

## Risks

- Migration: the migration adds one nullable column and runs one
`UPDATE` on `agents` with a correlated subquery on `activity_log`. On an
instance with a very large activity log, the backfill can take some
time. The migration does not lock other tables and does not delete data.
- Backfill accuracy: agents with no user-authored create activity row
keep `null`. The UI then does not show a creator. This is the same as
the current behavior.
- Privacy: the row shows only names from the company user directory, and
only to users who can already see that directory.
- Low risk for single-user companies: the UI does not change for them.

## Model Used

- Provider: Anthropic, Claude Opus 5.5 (model ID `claude-opus-5-5`), run
as a coding agent through Claude Code with tool use (shell, file edit,
and test execution), standard context window.

OpenAI GPT-6 (`gpt-6`) through Codex assisted conflict resolution,
regression tests, and repository verification. This session does not
expose an exact context-window size.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 2dd9811e8b Own agent hiring and termination in a lifecycle module (#15631)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - Agent creation, approval, pause, and termination change whether an
agent can work.
> - These changes currently use separate service and database paths.
> - Some agents need setup after their record exists and before their
harness can run.
> - This PR adds one module that owns those state changes and their
transactions.
> - The module records progress and retries incomplete work after a
server restart.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation**

A hire can become active before its execution environment is ready.
Direct agent state writes also bypass one common lifecycle boundary.
Termination does not have a durable step for resource cleanup.

**Proposed solution**

Use agent lifecycle commands for hiring, approval, pause, resume, and
termination. Keep proposed hires pending until approval. Prepare each
approved hire, test its saved harness configuration, and then permit
work. Wait for required plugin work before completing a step.

**Alternatives considered**

A general database commit hook would expose transaction details to
callers. A timer alone would delay each new hire. This module owns each
command transaction and starts its worker after commit. A periodic scan
recovers work after a process stops.

**Roadmap alignment**

This change adds the lifecycle boundary for the existing agent and
plugin systems. It does not add a user interface or a provider
implementation. It replaces the lifecycle delivery approach in #15391.
Related proposals include #11475 and #13099; this change does not add
their external executor protocols.

## What Changed

- Add durable approval, preparation, verification, pause, resume, stop,
and cleanup states.
- Keep agent creation, lifecycle state, configuration writes, and agent
record deletion behind `modules/agent-lifecycle`. Keep validation,
credential rules, reads, onboarding, invitations, general approvals, and
company data deletion in their services.
- Commit a hire before the remaining onboarding or invitation work.
Serialize requests with the existing dedicated database connection
helper. Reuse the hire after a failed attempt.
- Keep accepted work in the run queue during setup. Require execution
and cleanup evidence before completing pause or termination.
- Retain the original credential owner when approving migrated hires.
- Start lifecycle work after each command commits. Use database leases
and revision checks for retries and late results.
- Add a generic required plugin method and capability. Store the
required plugin IDs for each agent. Track host and plugin completion
separately.
- Keep harness verification and credential rules in services. Supply
their results to lifecycle through explicit ports. Reject failed logins
and incomplete probes.
- Remove reverse imports from lifecycle adapters into services. Share
record queries and validation below both layers.
- Use one hire decision path for agent IDs and approval IDs. Resolve the
approval and agent change in one transaction. Expose policy
reconciliation on the command object.
- Save configuration and verification invalidation through one module
operation. Ordinary commands own their transaction. Restrict the shared
transaction integration to its listed callers. Reject identity, company,
accounting, timestamp, and unknown fields.
- Require completed termination before deleting agent records. The
company deletion service calls the module through a separate deletion
interface.
- Save an approved secret before applying its agent binding. A failed
binding leaves the secret approved. A retry reuses it.
- Remove old permission and metadata export files. Move hire
configuration rules out of lifecycle persistence.
- Report failed worker steps and scans with operation context and known
error codes. Omit provider messages, stacks, and configuration values.
Document ordinary application use and extension rules.
- Recover expired native owners only after execution stops. Retry
cleanup of failed retained leases. Wait for setup in the live smoke
script.
- Keep manual, budget, and company pause reasons separate. Guard
execution status writes with the ready state.
- Add a migration, boundary checks, regression tests, and a lifecycle
guide. Keep the current UI.
- Limit periodic policy checks to 100 eligible agents per minute.
Continue from the last agent ID. Exclude pending hires and agents in
termination or a final state. Keep explicit company and budget updates
immediate.

## Verification

- Latest head `ccc3c86b0` aligns the shared status update schema with
the PATCH route. All 15 shared tests, 104 server route/OpenAPI tests, 2
CLI tests, and shared/server/CLI TypeScript checks pass. The Greptile
comment is fixed. CI is running; no new Apex review was requested for
this small fix.

- Rebase `75708ac94` rebases onto master at `2eb5187e4`. The backup test
uses the shared 90-second timeout from master; the older timeout commit
was removed. The affected backup test passes.
- Agent budget edits now pass the target agent ID through enforcement.
All 50 affected tests, server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass.
Both configuration update paths have regression coverage. CI is running
on the latest head. No new Apex review was requested for these small
fixes.

- Rebase `9b568666a` preserves the run-control extraction and
delivery-work startup changes from master. All 559 affected tests,
server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass. CI and Apex review are
running on the final head.
- The policy scan fix passes 56 lifecycle and diagnostic tests, 24
policy and caller tests, and 11 boundary tests. A regression test checks
the page limit, interval, excluded states, and cursor wraparound.

- Rebase `fd4698750` passes all 611 tests in eight affected lifecycle,
route, and heartbeat suites. Server TypeScript and all 11 module
boundary tests pass. The company deletion rollback and concurrent hire
tests are included.

- Follow-up `00aac7646` fixes the failed decision deletion test and the
public update schema. All 126 affected server tests, 8 shared tests, 2
CLI tests, and 11 boundary tests pass. Shared, server, CLI, and UI
TypeScript checks pass.

- Server TypeScript passes: `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc
--noEmit`.
- All 11 boundary tests pass: `node --test
scripts/check-module-boundaries.test.mjs`. The repository boundary scan
also passes.
- All 68 lifecycle, failure diagnostic, and harness verification tests
pass. Tests reject forbidden fields through the root command, combined
transition command, and restricted transaction integration. They also
check invalid fields returned by configuration preparation.
- Failure tests cover host work, plugin work, claims, renewals,
deferrals, and scans. Log tests check known error codes and exclusion of
private error contents.
- All 355 tests in 10 existing caller suites pass. These tests cover
secret approval, pairing, pending hires, credentials, company import,
built-in agents, managed agents, instructions, and skills.
- The branch is rebased onto `origin/master` at `2eb5187e4`. The queue
guards and cancellation lock fix use the extracted heartbeat queue.
Agent cancellation uses the extracted run-control file. The source diff
scan found no secrets or private URLs.
- Earlier checks cover approval retries, rollback, late verification
results, policy holds, deletion rollback, concurrent company deletion,
and queue admission during setup.
- Before the rebase, CI passed on `00aac7646` and Greptile Apex rated it
5/5 with no open comments. CI and a new Apex review are pending for the
rebased commit. The branch has no merge conflicts.
- The full local build and native Dot suite were not run. The host has
no Cargo. No live provider test was run.

## Risks

- Background policy recovery takes more than one minute when more than
100 agents are eligible. Explicit company and budget updates still
reconcile immediately.

- The restricted configuration integration keeps an agent reference and
its dependent records in one transaction. It cannot change a budget or
invoke a lifecycle transition. A periodic scan starts pending setup
after that transaction commits.
- Secret approval and binding use separate transactions. A failed
binding can leave an approved secret with no agent binding.
- New approved hires remain unavailable until setup and verification
complete. Existing clients see `paused` during these steps. This PR does
not change the UI.
- Migration `0320_daily_onslaught.sql` maps existing statuses and pause
reasons. It does not create external resources or claim that an existing
harness passed verification.
- Use a coordinated server update for this migration. Older server
versions can write legacy status without the new lifecycle checks.
- A failed onboarding or invitation request can leave a committed hire.
A retry reuses that hire and completes the remaining records.
- Deletion requires completed termination. Company deletion can require
another request while cleanup is pending.
- Required plugins must make repeated calls safe and reject older
revisions. A disabled or removed required plugin blocks completion until
it is restored.
- A new hire can run a second harness test after the existing UI test.
Some adapters can charge for this test.
- No live provider test was run. Provider implementation and resource
backfill remain separate work.
