feat: default new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner (#15993)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip lets users choose an agent harness and account. > - The server resolves the runner for new agents. > - Claude still needs the same ordinary native-default journey as Codex. > - Existing agents must retain their runner, model and account. > - This PR defaults new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner with Opus 5.5. > - Users can connect and work without a runner override. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15683. This PR depends on #15994 and precedes #15997. Related scope: #15422, #13978 and #15224. ## What Changed - Resolve new Apple Silicon Claude agents to `paperclip_runner`, `provider: acpx`, `acpxAgent: claude`. Keep explicit Legacy, models, provider routing and saved execution. - Use `claude-opus-5-5` for ordinary Claude defaults and retain explicit overrides. - Reuse existing API-key/subscription connections, credential storage and checks. Generalize the shared Advanced runner control with Claude branding. - Carry configured effort into the shared v9 contract. Preserve compatible permissions, instructions, skills, timeouts and session behavior. Require Legacy for unsupported settings. - Qualify a new immutable managed Claude target at explicit Connect through the existing permission-gated probe. Use fresh scoped discovery for test and hire. Discard stale results and require an explicit Connect after settings change. - Retain merged Codex onboarding recovery, auth preparation, import/effort corrections and Grok Bot gates. - Check the Claude first-task wizard's saved default directly. Update configuration/runtime documentation and exact Opus 5.5 accounting. - Align hire fixtures with the merged host-environment restriction. Native agent-authenticated hires cannot inject host env settings; both creation endpoints verify that no extra agent is saved. ## Verification - Updated onto master `9179d8dcc3e908c217fde4f63c9d08ccf8132eeb` through #15994. Native input v9 carries effort while preserving v7 home modes and v8 Muse. Codex defaults remain unchanged. - Focused local verification passed 285 server tests, 323 UI tests, 124 setup/registry tests, and two v9 permission-pin transport cases. Direct server/UI TypeScript checks passed. An initial 30-second hook timeout was resolved by serial verification with a longer hook budget: all 122 credential/permission cases and 232 snapshot/environment cases pass. Direct server TypeScript checking also passes. - Ordinary web creation with the experiment disabled saved native Claude, Opus 5.5 and High effort without runner/model overrides. The actual product task and follow-up both succeeded on integrated source `b2c9fe43f9cd3bc5dd9d22552da0148845ba71a4` with the cloud-built daemon from `04e0202ca81387b17cbe7fd094a8338648356fe9`. The final master reconciliation also changes shared runtime source. Historical proof retains its source identity; a final-source cloud qualification is running before refreshing the preview daemon. - Both actual browser downloads were checked: v1 has three sections/six checkboxes (451 bytes); v2 preserves the original body and adds two Rollback checks (612 bytes). The original attachment stayed byte-identical. The follow-up records session resume and the same provider session. Total estimated API usage: $0.518432800, with no pending/unpriced usage in the successful fixture. - Fixed the live-discovered setup incompatibility: native API-key validation no longer depends on the global Legacy Claude CLI. The existing provider endpoint verifies the key without a paid prompt; subscription/custom routing probes remain intact. - Fixed security review's native-hire credential redirection: agent-supplied URLs, proxy/launch settings and other host environment controls are rejected before inheritance. Native credential references remain supported and partial edits use the saved harness. Added create/hire/update regression coverage. - Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs. - Docker and native release builds ran in cloud infrastructure. An inadvertent local Rust prerequisite was stopped; no local Docker build was run. - The final master merge preserves task-loading, permission, skill-retention and OpenRouter changes. Pi uses a fresh combined profile 27, preserving both historical profile-24 declarations; Copilot remains profile 22. Focused protocol checks passed 155 cases (one skipped), the updated Pi attestation check passed 18 (one skipped), and 91 evaluation/catalog checks passed. - Latest-application manual continuation passed in 37.942 seconds on `695e5c005a85bddc8711d3fcddcaf6b7e1fb64d0`, with High effort, native Opus 5.5, Anthropic API attribution, the same resumed Claude session, an independently checked 635-byte file and persisted Done status. It uses the earlier verified Mac daemon; the preceding-source package qualification passed at `dca62c7aeb4b45f0dd91a8e18d386a16a2658ef8`. That package run predates the small TypeScript startup fix and is not relabeled as qualification for it. - Upgrade limitation: changed compiled sidecar identity rejected old durable launch state and recovery hit session-open bounds before eventually resuming. That attempt was operator-cancelled and retained; the successful manual continuation does not qualify seamless upgrades. - Local latency profile, Opus 5.5/High unchanged: three alternating real-ACP loopback samples per variant reduce median provider-ready time from 5.081s to 4.034s. The matched real API task startup improves from 5.533s to 4.348s, but total reply time changes from 17.933s to 20.221s because agent work varies. This establishes a startup saving of about one second, not a consistent total-reply speedup. A real candidate follow-up passed in 20.146s and resumed the same saved session. The loopback fixture makes no external model requests; failed initial probes remain retained. - The startup change passes 107 focused runtime/effort/lease tests, 53 profile checks (one skipped), TypeScript checking and the TypeScript-only runtime build. Native hire fixture checks pass 70 tests; their first local run retained a socket-hangup failure and stale OpenCode expectation, both accounted for before the passing rerun. Broader required checks run in cloud CI. ## Risks - Missing packages, authentication rejection, unsupported settings and unavailable models must fail explicitly. Existing agents retain saved execution; explicit runner changes use existing revision/session invalidation. - Subscription follow-up remains unverified; remaining live acceptance uses API keys per human steering. Historical accounting holds and the separate $50 ceiling remain intact. - The subscription acceptance limit remains explicit for review. No Claude database migration is introduced. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository tools, code execution and browser testing. The exact serving model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] Focused local tests and final cloud verification pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Share the external Runner lifecycle and add strict Muse contracts (#16444)
Add the external Runner foundation with distinct Dot/Grok V6, canonical home-mode V7 and Muse V8 contracts. Keep generated schemas and profiles synchronized. Bound default question-answer command IDs in a disjoint namespace while preserving existing IDs and durable replay. Preserve canonical migration history and add normally generated, replay-safe Muse schema milestones with literal preview-history fixtures. Refs #16444. feat(runner): expose credential updates through PRP (#16463)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The Runner uses PRP to send harness events to the host. > - A harness can replace its stored OAuth tokens during a run. > - The host has no PRP signal that tells it to read the updated credential. > - This pull request adds a durable credential update event and observers for supported stores. > - The host can react before it acknowledges the event. Token values stay outside PRP. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** `packages/paperclip-runner`: native provider execution, PRP schemas, and host event delivery. **Problem or motivation** A Paperclip host that consumes PRP needs to react when a harness changes its refresh-token credential. Existing credential copy-back paths do not provide a common event during a warm session. **Proposed solution** Add `auth.credentials.updated` as a P0 runner event. Include only the provider, binding ID, revision, and detection method. Observe native Codex and Codex/Grok ACPX credential files. Retain each pending event across runner restart until the durable outbox accepts it. Raw PRP consumers opt in with `observeCredentials: true` before session open. The bundled transport opts in for fresh sessions. **Alternatives considered** `harness.diagnostic` would mix a runner observation with harness diagnostics. Sending token values through PRP would expose credentials to event logs. Both approaches are unnecessary. **Roadmap alignment** I checked `ROADMAP.md`. This change extends the existing Runner protocol and does not duplicate a planned core feature. **Additional context** Refs: #11094, #14056, #12696. These describe credential copy-back and staging work. This PR adds the notification contract. It does not replace those private credential channels or claim to fix their full scope. ## What Changed - Add strict credential update payload validation to PRP v1, v2, and v3. Regenerate validators, the manifest, and the event catalog. - Watch supported credential directories with `notify`. Add a periodic read as a fallback and check at terminal and close boundaries. - Persist a private baseline and pending event together. Notify on account identity changes and retain the new baseline for later refreshes. Ignore incomplete files, unsafe files, and metadata changes. - Forward the event through the host transport. Test commit-before-ACK delivery and replay. - Commit pending runner observations before suspend and shutdown commands complete. Preserve the provider event backlog. - Create the private ACPX runtime directory before configuring observation. Cover fresh session startup with observation enabled. - Fence asynchronous PRP commits to the current authenticated connection and run authority. Ignore replaced callbacks while preserving the maintenance drain of admitted work. - Deliver observations found during final provider cleanup before clearing terminal recovery state. Retain the outbox and recovery state when the host ACK is lost. - Advance the pending Copilot candidate profile to v19 for the changed shared PRP source hashes. Preserve its v18 history and pending qualification status. Include the current fixture in the Docker build context. - Commit credential updates through an awaited host callback before PRP ACK, including during idle and close. Persist them in a separate run-log source namespace with company, agent, session, and runner checks. - Preserve public event metadata through server redaction. Register the event in task run details. - Document opt-in behavior, supported stores, event semantics, and the local run-log path. ## Verification - All 45 durable runner control tests and 24 native executor integration tests pass. - Ten Rust credential observer tests pass. They cover atomic replacement, polling, recovery, account-only changes and later refreshes for Codex and Grok, unsafe files, fresh runtime creation, and the Grok close handoff. Account identity stays private. - The full Runner TypeScript suite passes: 3,565 tests in 221 files. An additional 12 tests are skipped by the suite. - All 214 focused tests pass for the contract, Codex event routing, catalog, and durable host delivery. - All 13 Node protocol contract tests pass. - The exact Docker context integrity command passes: `docker buildx build --file .github/docker-context-checks.Dockerfile .`. - Rust formatting and generated protocol checks pass. - `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` pass. The full local `pnpm test:run` was attempted with CI-compatible `init.defaultBranch=master`, then stopped after a reproducible failure outside this change: `git-workspace-expiration.test.ts` expects one re-expired workspace but gets zero. The same case fails in isolation on this macOS checkout. Full repository validation is provided by CI; the focused Runner and host tests pass locally. - All 253 native transport and restart tests pass against the final release binary. - All 3 durable recovery tests and 139 candidate profile and native admission tests pass. - All 41 host redaction and task protocol surface tests pass. `pnpm check:token-gates` passes. - All 467 CI policy tests pass, including the 15 CI profiling tests. The upstream secret-reference test fix is retained from master. No workflow changes are included. - The Apex host-delivery fix passes 381 targeted Runner tests, six host database tests, repository typecheck, and the production build. The Runner tests cover commit-before-ACK, retry after a rejected host commit, warm attachment, and close after the turn queue ends. - Prior head `2f125cfcb` passed CI, standard Greptile 5/5, and Apex 5/5. One CI shard was interrupted by GitHub runner shutdown; its single rerun passed. Both Apex findings are addressed: idle/cleanup host delivery and late callback reconnect fencing. Current head `5db78f082` passes CI (56 successful statuses and four optional skips) and standard Greptile 5/5. Apex review of the account-change update is 5/5 on this exact head, with no actionable issues. - All 121 durable control-plane and credential callback tests pass, including account-only change delivery, subsequent refresh on the new account during close, host commit retry, late success/failure races, forward cursor delivery on a replacement connection, and the existing maintenance retirement contract. All 27 native provider and durable recovery integration tests pass after the account-change update. ## Risks - File changes signal a stored credential update. They do not prove that an OAuth refresh succeeded. Changes between reads can be combined. - Unix Codex and Codex/Grok ACPX stores are supported. Other harnesses and credentials held only in memory need their own integration. - Hosts must update their event schemas before opting in. Older hosts omit the flag and receive no new event. Older runners ignore the flag. - The host must use its existing private credential channel and account checks to read or copy the token. Account switches trigger notification but do not authorize accepting the new account. The event grants no credential access. - Tests use synthetic credentials. No live OAuth refresh has been forced. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, exact model ID `gpt-6.1-sol`, with high reasoning effort, repository inspection, tool use, and code execution. The session does not expose its context window size. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Trace execution preparation and durable response persistence (#16419)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The server prepares an execution environment before it starts an agent. > - Operators need to distinguish preparation, provider wait, and response persistence. > - Existing preparation phases start separate traces, and the native session trace ends before the final response is saved. > - This pull request adds an execution-attempt trace and detailed spans at the existing work boundaries. > - The benefit is a measurable startup and settlement path without changing execution policy. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** Operator-configured OpenTelemetry tracing for agent preparation, startup, and durable response storage. **Subsystem affected** Server orchestration, native Runner startup, and the Honeycomb run link. **Current behavior** Preparation phases start independent roots. Workspace lock waits, authorization groups, runtime asset work, provider-pack fallback, and the gap after provider completion are hard to attribute. **Proposed behavior** Use a server-owned async context for each execution attempt. Parent nested work to that attempt. Link the separately sampled native session because its ingress and queue history can begin earlier. Record transaction entry, lock waits, grouped authorization, asset preparation, artifact fallback, copyback, and response commit. **Reason and benefit** Operators can identify expensive work from recorded boundaries instead of inferring the cause from elapsed time. Nested and concurrent durations remain visible and must not be added together. **Breaking changes** No API or execution-policy change. New Observability span names and closed count attributes are documented. The existing local run-performance schema also records the additional provider-pack and harness measurements. Refs: #16178, #16205, #16330. ## What Changed - Add `task.execution_attempt` with same-run async ownership, independent root sampling, and native-session links. - Measure workspace transaction entry and settlement, advisory and row waits, source scans, reader groups, notifications, and writes. - Measure runtime selection and each concurrent instructions, skills, and MCP branch. Separate manifest, cache, materialization, and verification work. - Measure provider-pack discovery, verified reuse or upload, final verification, and remote harness state checks. - Measure workspace settlement, accounting, liveness, response authorization, comment commit, and publication enqueue. - Preserve the silent endpoint-off path, including when another library has registered a tracer. Bound repeated detail spans to 16 per name per attempt. - Extend the Honeycomb run link and document the actual coverage and remaining gaps. ## Verification - After resolving the conflict with retained-reader batching on `b98cdaea531c8447637cd4dcc19c61b3f5f41844`, all 61 targeted query, authorization, workspace-preparation and trace-boundary tests passed. The server typecheck passed. Reader tests still bound query count, avoid loading retained run payloads and enforce fresh project grants on every publication attempt. - Before that base integration, the tracing/exporter group passed 855 tests with 2 optional-SDK skips across 10 files and no inherited OTLP endpoint. It covers real PostgreSQL waits/rollback, durable response commit, assembled heartbeat preparation, concurrent parentage, sampling and tracer failure isolation. Native workspace/history tests passed 23 cases. These results remain supporting evidence for the unchanged tracing paths. - Full workspace typecheck and build passed during implementation. Full sharded CI, release validation, E2E and Apex 5/5 passed on prior head `8cebad80f3856dbcff6f3a6d5d34880ff77a20f2`. Fresh CI, security and Apex review are required on the current head before merge. - `pnpm check:token-gates` passed. No styles changed. - Earlier CI runs exposed exact-source-expression assertions changed by wrappers, missing run hashes on transaction-boundary spans, and sampling fixtures without an enabled endpoint. The fixes preserve the calls, add the declared hash and span cap, and enable tracing explicitly in the sampling fixtures. Focused repairs passed; the full prior-head CI passed after those repairs. Earlier failed run: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38729131366. - The full local `pnpm test:run` was stopped after the base advanced during that process. Its mixed-version results are not final-head evidence. A full local-suite pass is not claimed. - The old-head Superagent scan stalled at 35%. The current head has a fresh scan; no security pass is inferred from the old pending result. - No deployed Honeycomb acceptance is claimed by this code change. ## Risks - Enabled tracing creates more spans. Repeated detail spans are bounded, and inventories use group spans. - The attempt and native session remain linked traces. Historical queue time can precede the attempt, and nested intervals overlap. - A committed comment proves durable server storage. Publication enqueue and realtime dispatch do not prove external delivery or browser paint. - New custom attributes use only the existing run hash and validated file/byte counts. No SQL, paths, permissions, content, or exception text is added. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. The serving model ID and context window size are not exposed in this session. The agent used reasoning, tools, code editing, and code execution. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: integrate Pi 1.0 into the experimental Runner (#14921)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - The experimental Runner owns provider processes and durable sessions. > - Pi needs working task execution and human controls. > - The five-PR stack must preserve changes already on master. > - Each layer now carries the complete integrated source for a safe sequential fallback. > - This PR belongs to native GitHub stack #15602, ending at #14956. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #14436, #14631, #14743 and #14956. Ship Pi 1.0 through the experimental Paperclip Runner. The five PRs are #14921, #14922, #14923, #14924 and #14956. The user authorized the complete merge after checks pass. Existing `pi_local` execution is unchanged. Accounting and wider provider/platform qualification remain deferred. ## What Changed - Recover missing final replies after workspace finalization changes owners, using accepted-turn evidence without rerunning work or granting external-chat publication. - Preserve the admitted Pi instruction root across warm runs, while retaining changed-root rejection. - Give Pi a bounded 15-second default shutdown grace so stop, drain acknowledgement and durable suspension can complete. Explicit deadlines and other providers retain their existing behavior. - Integrate the Pi 1.0 runtime and master contracts. - Use Pi profile 22. Preserve explicit caller-selected models and exact native thinking levels. Keep Pi's wrapper, helper, extension and question/control behavior unchanged from the qualified profile-19 runtime. - Preserve master's Dot lifecycle and consent fields, configured task environment, status guards and current Codex/Claude dependency versions. Cursor stays qualified. Copilot stays pending; profile 17 binds the changed shared protocol validation sources. - Exclude general AWS IAM credentials from Pi static/custom provider bindings and selected task projections; preserve the provider-scoped Bedrock bearer key. Profile 21 is retained as historical provenance. Rust and cloud install probes use the current declaration. - Patch bundled brace-expansion 5.0.9 to the exact official 5.0.12 payload. Pin the patch and complete runtime closures. Include the patch in normal installed setup tooling. Keep the upstream Pi shrinkwrap as provenance and permit only this exact security correction. - Include current attestation files in the Docker build context. Keep the repository lockfile unchanged from master. CI and private image builds resolve manifest changes before their frozen installation. ## Verification - Full local `pnpm -r typecheck` passes, including Runner Rust, server and UI. Focused integration checks pass: 194 Runner admission/environment tests, 63 profile/credential tests with one expected skip, 152 Dot/UI configuration tests, and Pi transcript/notice tests. - Full local `pnpm build` passes on the final source. - Fresh final-source checks pass: all 698 Rust workspace tests (32 binaries), 156 credential/profile/controller tests with one expected skip, Runner TypeScript typecheck, and 20 package/setup/sandbox tests. - The profile-21 Pi materializer passes on the native host with the official pinned Node 24.21.0 and its npm. It verifies all 150 locked packages, the patched dependency and the exact closure. Setup/package bundle tests and UI token gates pass. - The old hashes were reproduced for all three supported targets before calculating the patched graph. New closure hashes are darwin-arm64 `282022db10150c6632b3444df421342e7d534bdf5d5fb1097a2e79d0625a2bcf`, darwin-x64 `64e251e19009f755c0b04f73ce2138246faab71a961b0f13d75ebfcc34bef12e`, and linux-x64 `713b1fdff42fb56a1518bdc084f181d70bee8ebadc3e4b1d76321ed9108c8410`. Independent native platform execution is separate from graph identity reproduction. - Historical cloud qualification remains unchanged: all seven core cases pass on shipping source `10dc43c9ec65d88c2f782d62afb296d09494f215`, harness `1a4408a48cfb5a1f094a311141c257c92cd7a893`, image `sha256:5b3a775b383591bda1b0c1889e509acc70ce7f37c53f09733c81d59037f02280`, and accepted Sonnet 4.6/low fixture. All 215 canonical files and all seven cleanup checks pass independent verification. These are profile-19 results and are not relabeled as fresh profile-22 runs. - Current Pi digest: `sha256:e92078bee3c23bec4100aa589013a44613d054cd686826534025d8019e9f39a9`. [The readiness plan](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/codex/pi-production-readiness/doc/plans/2026-10-02-pi-production-readiness.md) preserves campaign and failed-attempt provenance. - Merge only after every PR's current-head CI and fresh review pass. Linux CI covers the full suites, build and browser tests. The local embedded Postgres API-authority suite cannot start on this macOS/Node 26 host, so Linux CI must confirm that suite. ### Fresh profile-22 core qualification — 2026-10-08 All seven accepted core cases pass canonically on Pi profile 22, with `openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6` and native-confirmed low thinking. This model is a fixture; production accepts the caller's explicit Pi provider/model. Runtime/install source: `3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401`. Frozen accepted harness: `1a4408a48cfb5a1f094a311141c257c92cd7a893`. Immutable cloud image: `ghcr.io/paperclipai/paperclip-daytona-runner@sha256:506f22db7edd78f37c0c40bec1cc084af1850455026dbf467194bfbb8fcef141`. Pi digest: `sha256:e92078bee3c23bec4100aa589013a44613d054cd686826534025d8019e9f39a9`. [Hosted Linux image and clean-install verification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868328023) passes, including all 20 source-bound archives, normal CLI/Pi setup, companion import and the production pack reader. This exact installation source includes the latest master integration and the corrected Pi warm instruction-root fence. Full local typecheck/build and current-head hosted CI verify the final stack. All 13 focused real-root regressions pass. The full local executor suite passed 662 tests; 15 database tests could not start the Mac embedded PostgreSQL service. Hosted Linux CI passes the full required verification and E2E checks. These fresh results keep their own source identity; profile-19 results remain historical. | Core path | Canonical campaign | Retained archive SHA-256 | | --- | --- | --- | | File edit, validation, download and Done | `pi-core22-replyfix-0-1791511228` | 23 files; `a473e8603a3dd4737863291f8d3d1e392391f0b16d433c3e0e0e9d8baf7a97b0` | | Pending question and controller restart | `pi-core22-replyfix-1-1791511376` | 33 files; `6b829c4eb74e1f32a89c692a4ae7130dbfc1c6d3cf13915effe2103d9e242c8e` | | Three-turn session/process/workspace continuity | `pi-core22-replyfix-2-1791511587` | 23 files; `7a87021f8f9a3fdd3c58bb4467f8d82c635e3ea4795d6e75f144d9aa14818df8` | | Four typed questions and browser reconnects | `pi-core22-replyfix-3-1791511881` | 42 files; `9e31755252be1f4f9cb0626c984c142d4d1ae5f5bee3a7af08444db8d12c280a` | | Plan approval and completion | `pi-core22-replyfix-4-1791512031` | 22 files; `a0383ce1aab38e7b5a25ce0e9dd3bebea5c037ebd96ae6b29dae19015da2ae2c` | | Same-turn steering and permission denial | `pi-core22-replyfix-5-1791512261` | 39 files; `c929b8c7070f0b66aedc17e65ca46e6beab1e363926ac9f7e2a75fb250f05949` | | Stop during pending permission | `pi-core22-replyfix-6-1791512390` | 33 files; `7f0a58ae0f4d5bfc76149435f4e322537089c5bd16e7ffe9b5ad71f10a621a07` | All 215 canonical files (28714587 bytes) are independently hash-verified. All seven cleanup grades pass, with no owned runtime process or temporary root after each case. Automatic retries are zero. The owned cloud host stopped normally after retention. The prior profile-22 warm attempt remains failed and separately retained: archive SHA-256 `1e54eba5ec72b50cee1534b23d1d1d4f21a090006b8a64501ba70db972abfde5`. Its original canonical classification is preserved. Diagnosis reproduced a product bug comparing an agent-files root against an unset checkpoint-only field. The fix stores the admitted physical root separately from the adopted per-run collection capability. The real-root regression fails before the fix and passes afterward, including rejection of a changed physical root. Fixture, grader, model and all seven accepted case IDs are unchanged; this fresh campaign tests final-reply publication after file registration first. The intermediate restart attempt also remains failed and retained: archive SHA-256 `5dcaefdf1d17cf4cd54fd4cf810f45e736667392339b8ce7caf08bb4e225277f`. Its original canonical classification is preserved. Pi resumed, wrote the verified answer and completed its task; exact runner suspension was proven, but idle stop consumed about 5.2s and left under 3s for the drain acknowledgement. The Pi-only default shutdown grace is now 15s, preserving a full 5s drain round trip and a finite suspension reserve. Explicit caller deadlines, other provider defaults, literal drain receipts and exact suspension identity checks remain unchanged. The timing regression fails before this correction and passes afterward; all 18 focused settlement tests and Runner typecheck pass. The final-source file attempt is also preserved as failed (`candidate_failure`), archive SHA-256 `db6767b6773ea618997927ac77bdb005a5ac81492c7b9c0ffbc900449f829bc9`. Native edit, validation, exact downloadable artifact and Done/succeeded all passed, and the exact final reply was durably recorded. A workspace recovery owner completed before the live heartbeat reached presentation, leaving that reply absent from task chat. Recovery now materializes only a completed final reply from the accepted turn of an ordinary internal Done task, preserving issue/run/contract binding, suppression, external-chat authorization and same-run deduplication. The database regression covers the generated file-preparation receipt, suppression, unapproved external continuation and replay. Server typecheck and all 49 response-selection tests pass; hosted Linux verifies the database regression because embedded PostgreSQL cannot start on this Mac. The delayed-final-answer database regression passes on [the final root-source Linux server shard](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868262553/job/113628594152), alongside 1,108 passing tests. The first root Runner shard had one unchanged durable-resume test exceed its 5-second timeout; the identical top-source shard and the isolated exact test passed. One rerun of that failed job and its required aggregate passed without source or test changes. The original failed job log and the single-rerun receipt remain retained. ### October 9 merge verification Current merge head: `5a8fe63512a7166aaef5cf50065a25008aa8b44b`. All current-head checks pass, including `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`; exact-head Greptile review is 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Current master conflicts are resolved. The user authorized the maintainer override of the code-owner review gate after these checks. The seven retained live core cases remain bound to source `3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401` and its recorded cloud image. ## Risks - The security correction changes the dependency closure and profile identity. Old sessions must reopen on the new profile. Exact identities and credential bindings fail closed. - The runner remains experimental and requires explicit selection. Legacy Pi Local is unchanged. Caller model IDs pass through; the E2E model is a fixture. - Accounting and the broad platform/provider matrix remain deferred. This merge does not publish a release or deploy a service. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex assisted with reasoning, repository inspection, editing and tool use. The exact serving ID and context window are not exposed in this session. Final live qualification uses Pi 1.0.0 with `openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6` and native-confirmed low thinking. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): preserve credential content in document saves (#14937)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The Runner sends authorized tool calls to the control plane. > - Agents use these calls to save plans and instruction files. > - The Runner used diagnostic secret detection to reject execution arguments. > - Ordinary credential-related prose could reject a document save before persistence. > - This pull request forwards the original arguments and leaves credential policy to the provider harness. > - The benefit is reliable saves with useful diagnostic records. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Related foundation: Refs #12415 and #14430. No duplicate save-policy fix was found. **What happened?** A `write_document` call failed before the server saved its plan. The Runner reported `semantic tool input contains credential material; refusing to execute altered arguments`. The detector also masked ordinary phrases such as `secret manager` and `credential handling` in diagnostics. Both TypeScript dispatchers had equivalent execution gates. One dispatcher also rewrote structured approval and question payloads before execution. **Expected behavior** Paperclip forwards authorized arguments unchanged. The provider harness decides credential-content policy. Log and audit redaction does not reject or rewrite save input. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Send an authorized `write_document` call with a plan that discusses credential handling. 2. Include an intentional credential value in the body to exercise harness-owned policy. 3. The old Runner rejects the call. With this change, the document service stores the exact body. 4. Diagnostic records still mask explicit credential values. Qualified credential fields, short bearer values, opaque diagnostic pairs, and valid encoded JSON token headers have regression coverage. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced at `c46e41e81c03cd3c8b64cf993615b604d7fe8c62`. The branch is based on current `master`. **Deployment mode** Server deployment with the native Paperclip Runner. Local regression tests use the real document service and an embedded test database. ## What Changed - Remove credential-content vetoes from Rust admission and both TypeScript semantic dispatchers. - Preserve original structured approval and question arguments during execution. - Keep transport bounds, schema checks, authorization, idempotency, and audit masking. - Require explicit credential syntax or recognized formats for diagnostic masking. Preserve ordinary prose, metadata, and dotted identifiers. - Test exact document persistence, replay, nested argument identities, and masked audit copies. - Remove obsolete retry guidance and document harness-owned credential policy. ## Verification - `cargo test --manifest-path packages/paperclip-runner/runner/Cargo.toml --locked -p paperclip-runner-core --lib --test acpx_event_payload --test acpx_provider_state --test acpx_provider_turns`: 355 tests passed. - Focused server and adapter tests: 189 tests passed after rebase. These include the real document save and the complete tool-gateway suite. - Semantic dispatcher and conformance tests: 34 tests passed. - Diagnostic redaction and MCP tests: 46 tests passed, including all six review examples. - `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed on the repaired branch. - The broad local root suite was interrupted after database fixture setup failures. The focused database suites passed. CI runs the complete configured test lanes. ## Risks - Authorized tool arguments can intentionally contain credentials. The harness must enforce its content policy. - Diagnostic detection is narrower. Explicit assignments, credential fields, and recognized credential formats remain masked. - The change does not add a database migration or change company authorization. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. The session exposes the GPT-6 model family; its exact runtime model identifier and context window size are not exposed. Used reasoning, tool use, and code execution. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix: make runner task context ownership explicit (#13753)
<!-- Write all pull request text in Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100). --> ## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Task descriptions, comments, continuation data, skills, and execution rules enter several agent adapters. > - The same source can be rendered by more than one automatic input carrier. > - Failed resumes can also rebuild input from stale or compact context. > - This pull request gives each Paperclip-owned source one delivery owner and preserves the required transport boundaries. > - It adds deterministic adapter, interaction, runner, and browser tests for these boundaries. > - The benefit is more predictable context delivery with explicit evidence for later live qualification. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Related: #13144 removes a duplicate environment payload and bounds wake lists. Related: #11360 addresses Hermes resume behavior. This pull request preserves compatible active-session formats while repairing context ownership and stale question creation. **What happened?** Task descriptions and comments could enter more than one automatic context block. Native transports could wrap a complete model input in a second task envelope. Some legacy and gateway adapters could omit the owned assignment on ordinary tasks or rebuild a failed resume with stale compact context. A continuation could also request a question after newer human comments had arrived. **Expected behavior** Each task or comment source has one automatic model-facing owner. Distinct comment IDs and repeated wording remain distinct. Fresh fallback attempts rebuild the required full context. A question request is rejected when newer queued human direction makes it stale. Harness access policy remains owned by execution configuration. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Build a task with a description and current comments. 2. Capture the actual adapter or runner input. 3. Compare source ownership and task-envelope nesting. 4. Queue a human comment before a continuation requests a question. 5. Trigger a failed resume and inspect the fresh retry input. 6. Run the focused adapter, interaction, runner, and browser checks. ## What Changed - Add shared prompt-section selection at the provider-attempt boundary. - Deliver owned assignment context through native, legacy CLI, ACP, gateway, cloud, Pi, Kimi, Grok, Gemini, OpenCode, Cursor, OpenClaw, and Hermes paths. - Rebuild full or compact context after resume recovery changes the attempt. Add native and Claude ACP tests of actual recovery requests. - Preserve custom templates, loaded instruction files, execution policies, and older active-session formats. - Record continuation source metadata and reject stale question creation under the issue-row lock. - Add explicit Product E2E context-integrity profiles, prerequisite gates, credential-isolation checks, and report fixtures. - Bypass service-worker forwarding for same-origin Vite development modules. A real Chromium test fails with resource exhaustion before the repair and passes after it. Production asset caching keeps its existing policy. - Add browser diagnostics and service-worker module-loading regressions. - Add an explicit zero-retry eval option. The default retry behavior remains unchanged. Each campaign records its effective policy. - Remove the model-facing working-directory sentence from four prompt builders. Existing workspace, sandbox, permission, and custom-template configuration remains unchanged. - Align the everyday workflow assertion with the current 47-entry catalog. Compared with current upstream master, the branch carries the context-ownership implementation and its tests, the explicit context-integrity catalog and evidence harness, and the focused browser regression checks. ## Verification **Merge assessment:** focused regression evidence supports merge. This is not full completion of the original broad qualification matrix. The maintainer has authorized merge after fresh verification of the master integration. - Current head: `bbd52f82114eabf09bc7b1a7e97d54a5b43bbc00`. This integrates current master `2f585ef26a1814fa209715242d1ca791b63e4c4e`. All 14 conflicts are resolved. Cancellation checks, workspace finalization, native Grok support, and both sets of tests are retained. - Current-head Greptile: **5/5**, with no blocking findings. The review names this exact commit. All **59 reported checks are terminal: 55 successful, 4 skipped, zero pending or failing**. This includes the full root general and serialized suites, separate runner checks, typecheck, build, canary, browser E2E, Docker, and security checks. The successful legacy security status is included in that total. - After integration: workspace typecheck and full build passed. Separate runner checks passed: **2,160 TypeScript tests (10 skipped), 582 Rust tests, and 39 preparation checks**. Other passing checks include 621 Product E2E harness units, 376 focused shared/adapter tests, 160 real-database/API tests, 86 Hermes tests, 18 browser-support checks, and Product E2E typechecking. The complete root suite passed in CI. The duplicate local monolithic root run was stopped after that CI result; it is not counted as a completed local pass. - New native recovery coverage retains full assignment, completion contract, and explicit skill selection after safe replacement, for old and prepared input formats. Full native session test file: **136/136 passed**. - New Claude ACP coverage captures actual fresh, resumed, and missing-session fallback requests. It verifies one assignment copy, comment order, identical text under distinct comment IDs, and full fallback context. Full file: **33/33 passed**. Both affected TypeScript checks passed. - Existing deterministic tests cover source revisions, approval and trust boundaries, completion validation, custom templates, compatible sessions, standalone driver wrapping, and maintained adapter transport requests. - Provider-free browser support: **17/17 passed** after the master merge. Service-worker unit tests: **33/33 passed**. The module-overload regression failed before the repair and passed after it in real Chromium. ### Fresh live comparisons The new batch ran exactly four Product E2E attempts. **All four passed on the first attempt; no retries.** Each has six terminal matchers plus the existing browser lifecycle and invariant checks. | Exact case ID | Control | Candidate | |---|---|---| | `core-compatibility.runner-codex.local.plan-revise-accept` | Passed | Passed | | `local-session-integrity.runner-acpx-claude.local.structured-question-restart-resume` | Passed | Passed | The plan case checks a revised canonical plan and revision-bound approval before completion. The question case restarts the server before submitting the answer, then verifies the continuation completes. Control source is `dfa4e1bda8d50a1a01746603251a9128dbe9d0d6`. Candidate source is `79fcdb5dece501d28064ea9da306603881b46f0c`. They use identical frozen definitions and provider versions: Codex `0.156.0` with `gpt-5.6-sol`; ACPX `0.13.1` / Claude ACP `0.73.0` with `claude-sonnet-5`. The September 24 head added master browser recovery and test-only changes. The September 28 head also integrates newer master changes, including cancellation, workspace finalization, and native Grok. These are frozen-source live results, not exact-head live runs. The candidate received one description copy where the control initially received three. The submitted initial plan envelopes were 7,969 versus 19,097 characters. Question envelopes were 7,592 versus 18,919. These are structural measurements, not whole-provider token or dollar savings. ### Earlier evidence and failed attempts - The preceding fresh batch has four effective passing pairs: OpenCode comment continuation and assigned skill, native Codex comment continuation, and native Claude comment continuation. It retains **11 attempts: eight passed and three failed**. - Original failures remain recorded: missing local PostgreSQL library links before task creation; host-sleep cleanup after task/page checks passed; and a Claude **control** session-open rejection before a model turn. Setup was repaired identically on both worktrees. The permitted unchanged infrastructure retries passed. The underlying Claude provider startup error was not retained and remains unknown. - Older R2 retains **17 passes and one failure** across 18 attempts, including eight both-pass native/legacy Codex/Claude pairs. Its OpenCode blank-page failure led to the service-worker repair. R2 is historical evidence: master changed the native fixed prompt and removed duplicate wake environment data afterward. - The September 24 CI run initially failed one unrelated preview readiness test (`ECONNREFUSED` on its local fixture). Its test and production code match master. Isolated local verification passed **28 tests, 3 skipped**. One unchanged CI retry passed the full shard: **831 passed, 1 skipped**, including all **31 preview-exposure tests**. The aggregate CI gate passed afterward. The precise startup cause remains unknown; a port race is a hypothesis, not a proved cause. ### Limits The original wider profile/workflow matrix, repeated trials, and remote Daytona qualification are incomplete. These results support a focused merge recommendation, not statistical equivalence or universal harness qualification. Some usage receipts are missing in both variants, so no token or dollar savings are claimed. The $500 ceiling was preserved using conservative allowances; failed attempts and unknown charges remain in the ledger. Reproduce the focused additions with `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapters/claude-local/src/server/acp.test.ts` and `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/paperclip-runner exec vitest run src/native-session-runtime.test.ts`. Full checks use `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm test:run`, `pnpm build`, and the separate runner checks. Paid evals require the frozen definitions, profiles, and credentials; do not use `--all` as a substitute for the selected cases. ## Risks - Context placement changes can affect model behavior. Deterministic checks cover the selected paths, but live qualification remains incomplete. - The stale-question guard can reject a request when queued human comments arrived during the run. This is intended. - New stored inputs and model envelopes retain compatibility readers for older active sessions. - Custom templates may intentionally repeat content. - Removing a model-facing working-directory sentence does not change filesystem, command, sandbox, or permission configuration. - The worker bypass applies only to same-origin development module paths. Cache-policy tests preserve private-response handling and production asset caching. Mounted HTTP fixture changes remain test-only. - This PR does not claim measured token savings or statistical equivalence across every harness. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, exact model gpt-6-astra, with repository tools and code execution. Bounded supporting work used gpt-5.6-luna and gpt-6-luna. The serving context-window size is not exposed in this task. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue in-PR using the required issue fields - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket id - [x] I have run the focused local checks and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect these changes - [x] I have considered and documented risks above - [x] All current-head Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups for the current head - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix: complete native agent review handoffs (#13581)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Native execution uses durable runs, issue locks, wake requests, and typed tool authority > - A child can finish with a native agent review request while its original assignee stays responsible for the work > - The reviewer then needs a bounded execution path that can inspect the child, record one decision, and finish safely > - Before this change, assignee-only gates rejected the reviewer or left the parent waiting after the child review ended > - This pull request adds typed reviewer admission, scoped reviewer tools, durable wake and recovery handling, and parent continuation evidence > - The benefit is that native review handoffs complete without changing child ownership or granting broad mutation access ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs: #13314 Refs: #13574 **What happened?** A native child run could report `needs_review` for an agent reviewer. The reviewer wake then failed assignee and execution-lock checks. The child remained in review and the parent remained waiting. **Expected behavior** The named reviewer should receive one durable wake. The reviewer should inspect the child and resolve the exact review card. The child assignee should stay unchanged. The parent should receive the recorded review outcome after the child reaches its terminal state. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Run a native task with a different named agent reviewer. 2. Keep the child assigned to its original worker. 3. Let the worker finish with a native completion review request. 4. Start the durable reviewer wake. 5. Resolve the review and finish the reviewer run. 6. Observe the child and parent state. **Paperclip version or commit** Base: `e926b1301`. PR head: `b31ad9ab8`. Live reviewer verification source: `eea171aae`. **Deployment mode** Built from source. **Installation method** Built from source (pnpm build). **Agent adapter(s) involved** Not adapter-specific (core bug). **Access context** Both. **Database mode** Embedded PostgreSQL in the isolated live test fixtures. ## What Changed - Add server-validated native review assignment facts. - Admit only the exact company, issue, source run, decision, revision, addressee, and resolver policy. - Give reviewer runs a narrow set of Paperclip read and resolve tools. File and shell access follow the configured agent and environment policy, so reviewers can run tests. - Separate server-owned reviewer instructions from untrusted persisted review data. Escape the data boundary; retain server-enforced authorization. - Keep the child assignee unchanged. Atomically claim the reviewer run, wake request, and issue execution lock. A competing lock prevents provider startup. - Require the exact running reviewer session and current issue lock to resolve its assigned card. Reject missing, unrelated, or terminal reviewer runs. - Add durable reviewer wake, lock, stale-card, and abandoned-run recovery handling. - Prevent duplicate native wake dispatches during deferred admission and recovery. - Carry accepted or rejected child review outcomes into parent task context and continuation evidence. - Add focused server, runner, and native protocol coverage. - Preserve upstream continuation rules. Add child review decisions as separate evidence, while keeping real human answers in their own field. - Return actionable completion validation feedback to both providers. Permit a corrected completion after rejection. Keep strict terminal acknowledgment validation. - Apply exclusive shared-workspace locks to sandbox environments. Local and SSH folders can run concurrently, including when old settings request serialization. - Repair test timing, native event parsing, and the review artifact assertion. Allow a valid reject, correct, and accept review sequence. Check the accepted card against its reviewer run and decision. Keep polling within the existing deadline when review acceptance precedes the parent wake projection; report a specific missing-continuation error at timeout. - Apply the ACPX pending-call limit to reserved finish/block calls, with capacity-release and cancellation tests. ## Verification - `pnpm build`: passed on `eea171aae`. - `pnpm -r typecheck`: passed on `eea171aae`. - `pnpm test:e2e:runner:unit`: 359 tests passed in 30 files on `b31ad9ab8`; runner E2E typecheck also passed. - `pnpm check:token-gates`: passed. - Focused DB review, reviewer authority, and prompt-boundary checks: 31 tests passed. They cover invalid reviewer runs, competing locks, atomic admission, duplicate claims, and valid resolution. - Heartbeat, workspace, and recovery checks: 30 tests passed. - ACPX sidecar suite: 27 tests passed. Moving the capacity guard back below reserved handling makes both new regression cases fail. - Four focused live continuation checks passed on their first attempt at `f15f55e0a`: answer updates scope (6/6 each on Codex and Claude) and question tool guidance (12/12 each). These cases do not use the reviewer prompt path changed afterward. - Fresh Codex and Claude review-handoff checks passed all 29 native checks each on their first attempt at `eea171aae`. Both runs received the expected fixed prompt and completed cleanup. Only the six selected live flows were tested; no full paid provider catalog run. - The final commit only extracts the existing test-harness timeout diagnostic into a shared helper and adds positive and negative coverage. Removing the accepted-review guard makes two regression assertions fail; restoring it passes all six timeout tests. Production runtime code, prompts, deadlines, and grading criteria are unchanged by this final commit. - Deadline regressions: a valid continuation delayed 20 seconds succeeds within its 30-second unit-test deadline; an absent wake returns a specific candidate-failure diagnostic at that same deadline. Both assertions failed before the fix. Production E2E deadlines remain unchanged. - Historical native failures remain recorded: Docker availability failures; a valid reject/correct/accept sequence that the first-card grader misread; and a test that rejected the gap between accepted child review and parent wake projection. No failed result was regraded. The latest tests use a protected reference to the pinned Docker image and the unchanged artifact oracle and time limits. - Full repository verification runs in GitHub CI. Local verification uses the focused suites above, full build, and full typecheck. An unchanged Codex shutdown timing test failed once in CI, passed in isolation, and its full shard passed on the final commit without changes to that test or its causal code path. The original failure is retained in the verification record. Greptile reviewed `b31ad9ab8` at 5/5 with no outstanding actionable findings. All review threads are resolved. All current-head CI gates passed, including the isolated native runner Docker build (55 successful checks; two skipped by the workflow). ## Risks - Reviewer admission depends on exact persisted decision and interaction bindings. A stale or changed card is rejected. - Paperclip control-plane tools are limited to inspection and review resolution. This is not a filesystem permission boundary; provider file and shell access retain the configured policy. - Deferred wake recovery changes dispatch receipt coalescing. A scheduler regression could delay a continuation if the receipt state is wrong. - Parent review outcomes are evidence for the model. They do not grant tool authority or change issue ownership. - This change does not address legacy lease-hold handoff behavior. > Roadmap review: native execution, review gates, and durable recovery are existing roadmap capabilities. feat: add experimental native chat connectors (#13038)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - People also ask agents for work in their existing chat tools. > - Each external conversation needs one task and a current authorized source. > - Retries, Stop, and provider failures must not duplicate work or expose private data. > - The first chat PR establishes the opt-in provider and data contracts. > - This PR adds experimental channel integration and its durable control plane. > - Users can request work from connected channels and inspect delivery in Paperclip. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #13100 and #13092. This is the second of exactly two chat PRs. Foundation #13100 is merged and changed 143 files. Runner prerequisite #13092 is also merged. This PR changes 400 files against master, below the 500-file review limit. It contains no wireframe images or HTML galleries. ## What Changed - Add native Slack, GitHub, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, and Discord chat connections. Keep chat disabled unless the operator enables experimental chat connectors. Preserve the production GitHub tool connection and its normal setup path. - Bind each provider bot identity to one immutable Paperclip agent. Bind each admitted external conversation to one task. Paperclip owns tasks, runs, permissions, and audit records. - Add durable admission, per-conversation queues, questions, task controls, progress, final replies, images, files, and delivery receipts. Board comments remain internal unless explicitly sent to the channel. - Check current identity, provider reach, resource access, credentials, runtime generation, and exact source before provider effects. Keep private responses private. Never send raw reasoning, private logs, credentials, or tool arguments. - Hold uncertain sends for explicit audited resolution. Make Board Send-to-channel atomic and idempotent. Keep reconnect and setup credentials in Paperclip secret storage. - Preserve current native-runner authority across retries, lost acknowledgements, and recovery. Keep immutable input and completion contracts separate from newer user input. Receipt reconciliation cannot launch a provider. - Reconcile chat close/new ordering and provider-effect lock order. Audit resource access changes in the same transaction. Submit only the selected resource from each UI toggle so stale pages cannot undo unrelated access changes. - Drain Codex stdout before certifying process exit. Bound the drain with the existing shutdown grace. Preserve observed terminal authority without treating an undrained process as successful or reusable. - Incorporate master `018ca5da` with its ACP Stop, mobile task layout, runner packaging, and official lock changes. Preserve dedicated chat-answer continuations in both directions when ordinary queued comments are adopted after Stop. - Fence late adapter readiness behind an earlier Stop for the same run. Preserve verified cleanup for registered adapters. Handle single Stop, agent pause, duplicate Stops, and failure release without creating a false cancellation receipt. - Incorporate master's `6dd48cad4` wake-queue extraction. Preserve exact failed-chat retry authorization and lineage, retired question-source suppression, and the block on generic recovery that would discard the admitted source. Fresh deferred input retains its separate promotion path. - Incorporate master `2a05b5ed3` and its queue-admission extraction, simplified transaction ports, and separate runner CI job. Preserve exact durable receipts, actor separation, and dedicated-answer isolation through the new module. A failed receipt insert rolls back the accompanying deferred-wake merge. ## Verification Current head: `afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a`, incorporating master `2a05b5ed3457ea33efd6895520447d1d97fe98d8`. The conflicts are resolved. This successor fixes two test-harness boundaries exposed by CI: per-case route-module preparation and actual durable-save completion before intentional runner termination. Production code and all existing test/turn deadlines are unchanged. [Exact-head Greptile review](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13038#issuecomment-5587250594) is **5/5**, completed September 10 at 13:20:55 UTC, with no actionable findings or open review threads. [Fresh exact-head CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34481724341) passes **all 24 jobs**, including Build and both required aggregates. Normal exact-head guarded merge was attempted and rejected by the remaining branch approval policy: CODEOWNER review is required and no human approval is present. Normal **squash auto-merge is enabled** as of September 10 at 13:36:26 UTC. Requested CODEOWNERS have been notified; no approval bypass or self-approval was used. Earlier-head results below remain historical evidence, not qualification of this successor. - Final exact-head Linux evidence: 995/995 chat integration cases; 36/36 agent-skills routes; 35/35 runner live-session cases, including real process kill/resume; 1948 runner Vitest cases with three existing benchmark/platform guards; 870/870 API-authority cases; and 104 browser cases with four existing optional skips. Rust, conformance/replay, full repository build, typecheck, canary, all server/workspace shards, and both required aggregates pass with normal CI concurrency. Earlier failed attempts remain recorded below. - Latest test-only qualification: 141/141 route/permissions/authentication cases pass in separate cold forks, with plain server types and independent review clear. The real-runner suite passes 35/35, with plain runner types and independent review clear. A controlled premature-save acknowledgement fails as expected; matching ownership/effect/process evidence, rejected saves, real turn outcome, test abort, and pre-kill liveness are covered. No local reproduction of the original CI scheduling failure is claimed. The preceding [CI run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34479680858) passes 21/24 jobs, including all 995 Linux chat cases and browser aggregate (104 passed, four existing optional skips); only Build, the skills serialized shard, and the required verification aggregate fail. Its exact-head Greptile review was 5/5. Both failed job logs are retained. - Final fixture qualification: all eight focused Discord cases and all 995 chat integration cases pass. The exact modal statement/PID is observed before taking the real connection lock; the test then proves its actual blocking relationship before mutation. Original SQL execution, provider behavior, negative assertions, and 1s/15s timeouts remain unchanged. Independent review is clear and test/production hashes remain frozen. The preceding [CI attempt](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34477184777) passed 22 jobs, including Build/runner, typecheck, canary, all other test shards, and browser aggregate (104 passed, four existing optional skips); the two fixture failures and failed verification aggregate remain recorded, not relabeled as a pass. - Current queue-module composition: 308/308 recovery/batching/queue/Stop tests; 995/995 full chat integration; 89/89 module tests, including real PostgreSQL receipt-insert rollback; 24/24 workflow/module-boundary tests; plain server and UI types. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass in 1.4 minutes. Fresh databases, no skips or retries, stable reviewed source hashes. The initial boundary failure is retained; its no-op service wrapper was removed without changing recovery context or weakening the check. An exploratory standalone test-directory typecheck fails because its new upstream transformation config is not a standalone typechecking project; standard CI/build does not invoke it, and no configuration was weakened to suppress those diagnostics. - The preceding head `e02a63d462ce5d47433b0aeb632bb6fd20aab1ba` passed [all 24 CI jobs](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34436462958) and exact-head Greptile review at 5/5. Required CODEOWNER review prevented its normal merge before master advanced again. - Final extracted-module composition: 307/307 recovery, batching, queue and Stop-control tests; 995/995 full chat integration; 49/49 module tests including eight PostgreSQL adapter cases; and 19/19 issue-update tests. Plain server types pass. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass in 1.3 minutes. Fresh databases, no skips or retries in these cohorts, frozen source hashes, and independent review clear. - The preceding head `3e4e1c1c` passes [all PR CI jobs](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34415826820), including Build and required `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`. Both the original Rust failure and the previously load-sensitive lineage fixture pass with unchanged Linux concurrency. Master advanced afterward and required this reconciliation. - Final master composition: 448/448 focused UI tests, 186/186 adapter tests, 24/24 queue/control tests, and 11/11 packaging tests. Plain UI, server, shared, and adapter types pass. Token gates and diff checks pass. Independent server and UI reviews are clear. - Stop-registration regression: both real-service cases fail against exact `a95` source and pass with the fix. The full corrected recovery/control suite passes 265/265. Duplicate-owner and failed-Stop controls also pass. Plain server types pass. The readiness barrier prevents provider startup without adding an acknowledgment to an already terminal run. - Final qualification strengthens terminal-field equality and repeats both affected cases successfully on a fresh database. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass again in 1.3 minutes, without skips or retries. The final screenshot shows Cancelled, a paused subtree, retained input, and no error toast. - Two new actual-service regressions fail before the merge fix. They prove that queued-comment adoption could consume a dedicated chat answer or add unrelated input to that answer. The fixed four-case cohort passes, including ordinary upstream continuation and adapter Stop controls. Full recovery passes 257/257. All four actual local process/ACP Stop browser flows pass in 1.4 minutes, without skips or retries, on a fresh database. - The unchanged runner artifact was qualified with 171/171 transport tests, 870/870 API-authority tests, conformance 1/1, and replay 11/11. Six controlled reader tests prove the exit/drain repair. Its local serial Rust workspace passed 546 top-level cases plus two invoked helpers; the later passing Linux CI supplies default-concurrency evidence. - Prior exact-source full chat integration passes 995/995. Settings regressions cover concurrent stale pages, 501 destinations, pending state, rejected updates, and explicit retry. These deterministic tests do not prove live provider behavior. - Retained failed attempts and their causes are in the [qualification log](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-08-chat-queue-and-webhook-repair.md). The first merge adapter run timed out while macOS slept for 290 seconds. Its unchanged repeat passed with a temporary sleep guard. No assertion, deadline, or CI gate was weakened. Review commands include `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts src/__tests__/issue-queued-comments-routes.test.ts` and `pnpm exec playwright test --config tests/e2e/playwright.config.ts tests/e2e/acp-stop-continuation.spec.ts`. Database suites require fresh disposable databases. See the [browser runbook](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-04-chat-adapters-browser-e2e-runbook.md) for provider setup and separate live acceptance steps. ## Risks - This remains experimental. Deterministic tests and bounded live evidence do not establish every provider feature, tenant, permission layout, or media shape. Teams work-tenant qualification is still open. - Failed and uncertain provider effects remain visible and can require operator action. A transport receipt does not prove recipient visibility. - Native controller and runner artifacts must remain compatible. Preserve lease ownership, terminal authority, source binding, and quarantine during future changes. - Access and audit rows commit together, but activity notifications remain best-effort. This is not a new durable event outbox. - The PR operation does not deploy a live server, replace its runner, or change provider permissions. Remaining live qualification is documented in the [temporary handoff](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-08-open-qualification-followups.md). ## Model Used OpenAI Codex assisted with implementation, tool execution, testing, and review. The work records `gpt-6-astra` assistance. The environment does not report a context-window size. fix(runner): repair paid provider startup paths (#12769)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents that perform work. > - Paperclip Runner connects durable task runs to local provider processes. > - The full-stack paid matrix exposed failures after the runner integrity repair. > - Verified JavaScript entrypoints lost their relative module graph when Linux executed them through descriptor paths. > - Returned provider startup errors also remained pending and became indeterminate after recovery. > - Sparse Codex tool lifecycle events lost the `write_document` identity before task transcript projection. > - This pull request repairs those three boundaries and makes the structured-question fixture deterministic. > - The benefit is repeatable provider startup, exact failure replay, and correct inline Plan placement. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #12721 and #12700. **What happened?** The paid runner matrix failed ACPX and OpenCode startup before provider session creation. The runner journal then replaced the original startup error with an indeterminate recovery result. Native Codex saved a Plan but rendered it only as a fallback card. A legacy Claude waiting reply could also echo the reserved terminal marker before the answer arrived. **Expected behavior** Verified JavaScript providers must start from immutable descriptor-backed artifacts. Returned startup failures must persist as terminal failed command results. Native tool lifecycle updates must preserve the `write_document` boundary. Pre-answer fixture output must not contain the reserved terminal marker. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Run the local provider cells in the Runner Full-Stack E2E workflow. 2. Observe ACPX and OpenCode fail during `session.open` before provider execution. 3. Observe recovery report `execution_indeterminate` instead of the original startup error. 4. Run the native Codex Plan cell and observe the fallback Plan card after the tool activity row. 5. Run the legacy Claude structured-question resume cell and observe an early marker echo in waiting prose. **Paperclip version or commit** `0f9452101740835ce0b1488a204bf48acd5bafc3` **Deployment mode** Local development with the paid GitHub Actions acceptance workflow. ## What Changed - Bundle the ACPX sidecar and OpenCode proxy as self-contained Node ESM entrypoints before hashing and verified descriptor launch. - Anchor ACPX dynamic provider package resolution at a controller-derived provider-pack root and keep that root out of the provider child environment. - Persist executor-returned startup errors as redacted durable failed command results while retaining indeterminate recovery for true process death. - Coalesce sparse native tool items by stable ID so a late `write_document` name, input, and result reach the transcript boundary once. - Forbid the structured-question fixture from spelling or announcing its reserved terminal marker before the user answers. ## Verification - Rust and TypeScript regression tests cover durable failed replay, true crash ambiguity, bundle closure, package-root derivation, environment filtering, exact Codex tool lifecycle coalescing, and prompt determinism. - Local execution is intentionally limited to formatters and static diff checks. GitHub Actions will run tests, type checks, builds, and security checks. - After ordinary CI is green, scoped paid cells will validate one ACPX launch, one OpenCode launch, native Codex Plan projection, and legacy Claude structured resume before a complete matrix rerun. - Prior failing matrix: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/33682434315 ## Risks - Bundling changes the bytes covered by provider launch hashes. Provider-pack generation already hashes the final built files. - ACPX still loads qualified provider packages dynamically. The controller supplies a normalized package root, while existing version, digest, path, and descriptor checks remain active. - Durable `failed` is terminal. Replays return the same redacted result and do not execute the provider effect twice. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex based on GPT-5 with agentic reasoning, repository inspection, code editing, Git, parallel subagents, and GitHub Actions coordination. The exact deployed snapshot and context-window size are not exposed to this task. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either linked related public work or described the bug in this PR - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket id - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass (intentionally deferred to GitHub Actions) - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] No documentation change is required for this runtime repair - [x] I have considered and documented the risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

fix(agents): redact plaintext env values in agent read and mutation responses (#9860)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Agents are configured through `adapterConfig`, whose `env` block
holds the credentials an agent needs to talk to its provider (API keys,
tokens, and similar)
> - Those bindings come in several shapes: a legacy bare string, `{
type: "plain", value }`, and the indirection forms `{ type: "secret_ref"
}` / `{ type: "user_secret_ref" }`
> - Every endpoint that serializes an agent returned `adapterConfig` as
stored, so every `plain` binding was returned verbatim in the API
response
> - That means any caller able to read an agent — including the agent
itself via `GET /api/agents/me` — received live credentials in
plaintext, and those values then propagate into client state, logs, and
network traces
> - The exposure spans three response families that share no common
serializer: the single-agent detail reads, the company agent-list read,
and the create/update/lifecycle routes that echo the stored row straight
back
> - This pull request routes all three through one presenter that
redacts `plain` env bindings, so the leak is closed server-side and
cannot be bypassed by the caller
> - The benefit is that agent credentials stop appearing in API
responses while `secret_ref` indirection continues to work unchanged
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
No public upstream issue exists for this, so the underlying bug is
described inline below following
`.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug_report.yml`.
**What happened?**
Every endpoint that serializes an agent returned the full plaintext
value of each `adapterConfig.env` entry whose `type` was `"plain"` (and
each legacy bare-string binding). Any actor authorized to read an agent
received that agent's live credentials in the response body. Three
distinct response families were affected:
- **Single-agent reads** — `GET /api/agents/{id}` and `GET
/api/agents/me`, via `buildAgentDetail`.
- **Company agent list** — `GET /api/companies/{companyId}/agents`,
which serializes rows directly and therefore does not inherit any fix
applied to `buildAgentDetail`. Callers that pass the configuration-read
check received unredacted rows for every agent in the company in a
single request, making this the broadest of the three.
- **Mutation responses** — agent create, `PATCH /api/agents/{id}`, and
the `pause` / `resume` / `clear-error` / `approve` / `terminate` routes,
each of which echoes the stored row back to the caller.
**Expected behavior**
Read endpoints should never emit stored plaintext credentials. `plain`
bindings should be replaced with a redaction sentinel before
serialization, while `secret_ref` and `user_secret_ref` bindings — which
contain no secret material — pass through untouched.
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Configure an agent with an `adapterConfig.env` entry such as `{
"OPENAI_API_KEY": { "type": "plain", "value": "sk-example" } }`.
2. Call `GET /api/agents/{id}` (or authenticate as that agent and call
`GET /api/agents/me`).
3. Observe `sk-example` returned verbatim in the response body.
4. Call `GET /api/companies/{companyId}/agents` as a
configuration-reading caller and observe `sk-example` returned verbatim
for that agent alongside every other agent's credentials.
5. Call `PATCH /api/agents/{id}` with any unrelated field (for example
`{ "title": "Renamed" }`) and observe `sk-example` returned verbatim in
the mutation response.
**Paperclip version or commit**
Reproduced on `master` at `f12bb27b`.
**Deployment mode**
Self-hosted / local development server.
## What Changed
- `server/src/redaction.ts`: adds `redactAgentAdapterConfig`, which
rewrites every bare-string or `{ type: "plain", value }` env binding to
`{ type: "plain", value: "***REDACTED***" }` and passes `secret_ref` /
`user_secret_ref` bindings through unchanged. Reuses the existing
`REDACTED_EVENT_VALUE` and `isSecretRefBinding` /
`isUserSecretRefBinding` / `isPlainBinding` helpers — no new
dependencies.
- `server/src/redaction.ts`: `env` is destructured out and sanitized
only by `redactAgentEnvBinding`, while the remaining adapter keys go
through `redactEventPayload`. Previously the already-redacted `env` was
passed back through `sanitizeRecord`, so each binding was processed
twice — safe only because the sentinel is a fixed point of that second
pass. The two paths are now disjoint, making the invariant structural
rather than coincidental.
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: `buildAgentDetail` applies
`redactAgentAdapterConfig` before serialization, so `GET
/api/agents/{id}` and `GET /api/agents/me` both redact at the response
layer. Restricted views inherit the same protection.
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: adds `redactAgentRowForResponse`, the
single presenter for every response that emits a raw agent row, and
applies it to the company agent-list route and to the create / update /
pause / resume / clear-error / approve / terminate routes. It composes
with `redactForRestrictedAgentView` rather than replacing it: that
helper is an authorization filter (blank the whole config for low-trust
actors), this one is secret hygiene (mask values for every actor scope),
and the two invariants stay independent. `buildAgentDetail` now
delegates to the same presenter instead of inlining the call.
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: adds `restoreRedactedAgentEnv` on the
PATCH path so a client that round-trips a redacted detail response back
through `PATCH /api/agents/{id}` does not zero out stored values —
redacted-sentinel entries matching an existing key are restored from
storage.
## Verification
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit` — clean.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run
agent-permissions-routes.test.ts` — 57 tests pass.
- Adjacent suites (`redaction`, `agent-adapter-validation-routes`,
`agent-cross-tenant-authz-routes`, `agents-pending-approval-config`,
`agents-service-secret-bindings`, `built-in-agent-routes`,
`plugin-managed-agents`, `agent-skills-routes`) — 8 files, 72 tests
pass, no regressions.
- Both new route tests were confirmed to **fail** with the route changes
reverted and pass with them applied, so they genuinely pin the behaviour
rather than passing incidentally.
Tests added:
- `server/src/__tests__/redaction.test.ts`: covers legacy-string, `{
type: "plain" }`, `secret_ref`, and `user_secret_ref` bindings,
asserting the plaintext value never appears in the serialized result;
plus coverage that non-env adapter keys are still sanitized, that env
binding shapes survive intact, and that configs with no `env` block are
handled.
- `server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts`: `GET
/api/agents/{id}` asserts redaction rather than plaintext passthrough;
new `GET /api/agents/me` redaction test across the same binding shapes;
new test asserting the `PATCH` round-trip preserves stored values; new
test asserting the board `GET /api/companies/{companyId}/agents`
response redacts every binding shape; new test asserting a mutation
response redacts rather than echoing the stored plaintext.
No real secret values appear in any test, fixture, or commit message.
## Risks
- **Behavioral change for API consumers.** Any client that read a
plaintext credential out of an agent detail, agent-list, or mutation
response will now receive `***REDACTED***`. This is the intended
security fix, but it is a breaking change for such consumers, which must
move to `secret_ref` indirection.
- **Mutation responses are redacted too.** Callers that previously
relied on a create or update response to echo back the credential they
had just written must now read it from their own request. This is
consistent with the `restoreRedactedAgentEnv` round-trip path, which
already assumes the client holds a redacted copy.
- **Round-trip data loss, mitigated.** A client that GETs an agent and
PATCHes the object straight back would otherwise persist the sentinel
over the real value. `restoreRedactedAgentEnv` restores redacted entries
from storage; the round-trip is covered by a regression test. A PATCH
that *intentionally* sets a value literally equal to the sentinel is not
distinguishable and would be treated as "unchanged" — an acceptable
trade-off given the sentinel is not a plausible credential.
- **No migration.** Stored data is untouched; redaction happens purely
at serialization time, so the change is fully reversible by revert.
- **Overlap with existing PRs** — see the duplicate-search note below.
Maintainers may prefer to consolidate rather than merge this in
isolation.

## Duplicate search
Searching open and closed PRs for prior art surfaced several overlapping
efforts against the same defect. Linking them for maintainer triage — I
am not claiming this PR supersedes them, and consolidation may well be
preferable:
- #9823 — `fix(security): redact adapterConfig secrets on all agent read
endpoints` (closest overlap)
- #8779 — `fix(server): redact agent config secrets in read and mutation
responses`
- #8330 — `fix(server): redact adapterConfig.env for cross-actor agent
reads`
- #4856 — `fix(server): redact adapter env secrets in agent API
responses`
- #4763 — `fix(server): redact adapter_config secrets in agent detail
responses`
- #1839 — `fix: redact secret env vars from agent API responses`
- #4967 — `fix(routines): redact adapterConfig.env in GET

fix(runner): restore local session and task integrity (#12721)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the control plane for agents that perform work. > - Paperclip Runner connects durable provider sessions to individual task runs through PRP. > - Provider continuity and per-run authority are different lifetimes. > - The existing implementation mixed those lifetimes and lost event metadata between provider frames, runnerd, persistence, API sanitization, and the task thread. > - That caused failed continuation, missing progress and Plans, duplicate replies, hidden failures, and unsafe recovery. > - This repair gives every heartbeat fresh authority, preserves qualified provider-session continuity, and restores one lossless presentation path without changing direct adapters. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A second native heartbeat could reuse tickets, leases, command receipts, sequence state, and run identity from the first heartbeat. Provider phase and item identity could be lost before the UI read them. Redaction could corrupt protocol discriminators while still missing malformed credential tails. The task thread could fold progress into the final response, hide failures, or show more than one final answer. Native Codex also exposed approval modes that do not yet have a durable approval bridge. **Expected behavior** Each heartbeat uses a new PRP authority epoch. Codex and OpenCode preserve exact qualified provider sessions; ACPX emits an explicit continuity event when its qualified process-replacement policy is used. Every accepted provider event is presented, classified as internal, or surfaced as unsupported. The task page shows chronological progress, reasoning summaries, activity, Plans, interactions, terminal failures, and exactly one final reply. Direct adapters retain their existing path. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Enable the unified experimental Paperclip Runner setting. 2. Create a local native Codex, OpenCode, ACPX Claude, or ACPX Codex agent. 3. Run response, Plan, structured-question/resume, restart, cancellation, and failure scenarios. 4. Reload the task while active, waiting, failed, and settled. 5. On the old implementation, observe stale run authority, missing classifications, incomplete output, or duplicated/folded replies. **Paperclip version or commit** The repair is based directly on `master` at `87d05e194b643810d16d20612115acd01d735d43`. **Deployment mode** Local development with the embedded database. Related work: Refs #12616, #12646, #12666, #12685, and #12700. ## What Changed - Rotates PRP control-plane, outbox, ticket, lease, command, receipt, and sequence authority for each heartbeat while carrying forward only a validated provider-session identity. - Reads `control-plane-state.json`, validates both durable schemas and lifecycle values, resumes coherent current runs, archives qualified settled authority, and quarantines malformed or mismatched scoped state without moving ambiguous live legacy state. - Preserves Codex provider phase and stable item identities so commentary remains progress and only `final_answer` becomes final. - Adds raw OpenCode HTTP/SSE boundary coverage and canonical reasoning lifecycle mapping. - Makes ACPX normalization lossless for visible reasoning, tool lifecycle metadata, stable bounded identities, Plan revisions, structured requests, failures, and qualified process replacement. Only the compatible terminal assistant message is promoted as final. - Applies schema-aware redaction before generic JWT-shaped detection and scans every diagnostic string leaf. Malformed raw/escaped quoted credential tails are redacted in both server and durable Rust state. - Restores snapshot-style chronological task presentation, expandable tool activity, inline Plan cards, visible waiting/resume/cancel/failure states, and exactly one final answer. - Makes `never` the only qualified native Codex permission mode and rejects unsupported persisted native modes with remediation. OpenCode and ACPX policies remain intact. - Keeps the unified experimental Runner setting as the only enablement flag. Onboarding and direct Codex, Claude, and OpenCode stay on their legacy execution/finalization paths. - Adds cross-language goldens, authority/recovery/fault coverage, exact response/count assertions, and native plus legacy acceptance scenarios. ## Verification - Pull-request GitHub Actions run Rust formatting/tests, TypeScript checks, server/UI tests, builds, protocol drift checks, browser E2E, and security scans. - A separate workflow-only validation ref is pinned directly on this PR head and runs the 35-cell paid local matrix: three core scenarios plus structured-question resume and restart/resume for native Codex, native OpenCode, ACPX Claude, ACPX Codex, and direct Codex/Claude/OpenCode. Run: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/33682434315 - Acceptance requires exact single visible replies, monotonic sequences, matching envelope discriminators, one semantic terminal, one run terminal, no unresolved interaction, no duplicate mutation, no secret leakage, provider continuity, and zero native rows for direct adapters. - Per maintainer direction, tests are running in GitHub Actions rather than on the slower local host. Only formatters and static diff checks were run locally. ## Risks - Recovery from old or partial filesystem state is sensitive. The repair fails closed, preserves active or unverifiable authority, and quarantines only state whose scoped ownership is safe to move. - Provider event formats can change. Closed validators and boundary goldens turn new or malformed events into visible diagnostics instead of silent drops. - Shared task presentation could affect direct adapters. Runtime-fact gating plus the direct-adapter matrix protect the existing path. - Managed and remote providers are not qualified here. Shared code continues to compile and fail safely, but live qualification is deferred. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. feat(runner): add Codex-native application integration (#12591)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The runner package is useful only when the application can start, observe, and recover a native Codex run safely. > - Existing direct adapters must keep their current execution and finalization paths. > - The application boundary therefore needs additive persistence, authorization, coordination, and recovery behind an explicit experimental adapter. > - This pull request adds that Codex-only boundary without activating generalized providers, remote environments, or the later task/SDK surfaces. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Shared contracts, database persistence, adapter utilities, server native-runtime services, and the experimental Paperclip Runner adapter. **Problem or motivation** The already-landed runner package has a qualified Codex path, but the application needs durable native-run state, guarded runtime selection, authenticated coordination, tool security, finalization, and recovery before the experimental adapter can be exercised safely. **Proposed solution** Add a Codex-only `paperclip_runner` application path behind the existing default-off native-runner setting. Bind native state and coordination to company/run identity, preserve persisted-run recovery, and leave every direct adapter on its existing legacy execution path. **Alternatives considered** The earlier stack boundary introduced a generalized executor and remote-environment lifecycle here. That made this PR depend on implementations in higher PRs and changed reusable sandbox behavior globally. Those pieces are now deferred together to #12592. **Roadmap alignment** ROADMAP.md does not list a conflicting native-runner integration project. This change adds the application boundary for the existing Runner architecture. ## What Changed - Added native run/result/finalization/provider-trace persistence, shared validators, and idempotent migration/replay coverage. - Added guarded Codex-only runtime selection, authenticated PRP coordination, recovery, finalization, and interaction services. - Added run/company-bound tool-gateway authorization, credential redaction, SSRF protections, and replay-safe behavior. - Added the explicit `paperclip_runner` adapter behind the default-off rollout setting. - Preserved legacy answered-question wake projection and direct-adapter execution/finalization paths. - Hardened cancellation so only owned in-memory child processes are signaled; persisted recycled PIDs/process groups are never trusted. - Retained the narrow Claude ACPX isolated-context security follow-up discovered after #12590. - Deferred the generalized executor, provider ingress, remote lifecycle, SDK/lab/eval work, release-process changes, and lockfile. ## Verification - Changed-file delta against `master`: 133 files. - GitHub Actions is the authoritative verification environment for this PR. - Full CI, security, and Greptile review will run on this lowest unmerged stack PR. - Local tests/build/typecheck were not run because this checkout is resource constrained. - Static diff/reference checks pass, and `pnpm-lock.yaml` is unchanged. ## Risks - This touches central heartbeat and agent-route code, so legacy compatibility is the primary risk. - Runtime selection remains Codex-only and explicit; direct Codex, Claude, OpenCode, process, HTTP, and plugin adapters remain on their existing paths. - Fresh native starts fail closed while the rollout flag is off; persisted native records remain readable and recoverable. - Cancellation, company/run binding, tool calls, status decisions, and completion writes are guarded or replay-safe. > For core feature work, check [ROADMAP.md](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in #dev before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5.6, with repository tools, code execution, and parallel agent review. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either linked existing issues or described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass — GitHub Actions is authoritative for this resource-constrained checkout - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI and security gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open actionable findings - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before merge ## Stack - Position: 3 of 5 overall; lowest of 3 currently unmerged - Base: `master` - Previous: [#12590](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/12590), qualified Claude ACPX runtime — merged - Next: [#12592](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/12592), generalized Codex executor, task experience, and developer SDKs --------- Co-authored-by: Dev Agent <dev@paperclip.ing> |

feat(apps): add secure remote MCP and PostHog setup (#12339)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Apps give those agents governed access to external tools. > - Remote MCP setup needs secure endpoint validation and durable credentials. > - PostHog needs both browser sign-in and personal API key setup paths. > - This pull request adds the shared remote MCP foundation and the PostHog definition. > - The benefit is a secure and reusable base for later app connection work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #11965 This is stack 1 of 11. It replaces the first reviewable part of #11965. ## What Changed - Add guarded remote MCP setup and credential handling. - Add PostHog OAuth and API key connection methods. - Add focused server, shared contract, and UI coverage. - Keep the migration replay-safe and idempotent. - Give the late-close security regression the same 10-second CI headroom as the adjacent real-timer handshake test. - Synchronize fake-timer handshake tests at the exact ensure-session boundary so real filesystem setup cannot race the fake deadline. - Drive PTY overflow coverage only after listener registration so scheduling cannot reorder the test fixture. ## Verification - pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/execute.test.ts server/src/__tests__/plugin-worker-manager.test.ts (220 passed; affected cases also passed five focused stress repetitions) - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/execute.test.ts -t "never leaks a sandbox-provided value from a late close rejection into logs or the result"` (1 passed) - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/execute.test.ts -t "never promotes a late ensureSession resolution|closes a late-resolving real handle exactly once"` (2 passed) - `pnpm -r typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/tool-access-service.test.ts` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db check:migrations` - `pnpm build` ## Risks - Remote endpoint validation can reject configurations that previously passed without checks. - OAuth configuration errors can block setup until the operator corrects the provider settings. - The migration uses guarded statements so repeated execution is safe. - The test-only synchronization changes do not affect runtime behavior; they remove filesystem/fake-clock and listener-registration races observed under parallel CI load. > I checked `ROADMAP.md`. This stack continues the existing app connection work from #11965 and does not duplicate another planned item. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5. The runtime model ID and context window were not exposed. The model used reasoning, tool use, and code execution. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(issues): contain cross-issue agent side effects (#10837)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the control plane that coordinates autonomous agent work. > - Agents need to collaborate on issues beyond their current assignment. > - Cross-issue comments and updates are useful, but an unbounded run can create cascading side effects. > - The control plane must preserve company-wide collaboration while containing each run's influence. > - Comment attribution must also show the responsible user and the acting agent in audits. > - This pull request adds run-bound cross-issue containment, attribution, and agent-class wake rules. > - The benefit is safer collaboration without restoring issue-assignee ownership restrictions. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** Agent-authenticated issue comments, updates, reopen behavior, and assignee wake routing. **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting: server routes and services, shared contracts, database schema and migration, and implementation documentation. **Current behavior** An authenticated agent can collaborate across company issues, but one heartbeat run has no per-run side-effect boundary. Comment records also do not persist the responsible user separately from the acting agent. **Proposed behavior** Require a valid heartbeat run for agent cross-issue comments and updates. Audit each attempt and cap a run at 20 cross-issue effects. Keep the cap in log-only mode until it automatically changes to enforcement at 2026-08-11 00:00 UTC. Preserve same-issue writes. Use agent-class wakes for agent comments. Keep same-run completion comments from reopening completed work. Record the responsible user on agent-authored comments and activity. **Reason and benefit** Agents can collaborate on other issues without an assignment gate, while each run has an atomic and inspectable side-effect limit. Operators can identify both the acting agent and the responsible user. **Breaking changes** After 2026-08-11 00:00 UTC, the twenty-first cross-issue comment or update from one heartbeat run returns a containment error. Agent cross-issue writes without valid run context are rejected. The migration is additive and backfills existing agent-authored comment attribution where the source data is available. ## What Changed - Added an atomic per-run counter for cross-issue agent comments and updates. - Added audit events for allowed and rejected cross-issue effects. - Added the automatic log-only to enforcement flip at 2026-08-11 00:00 UTC. - Added responsible-user attribution to agent-authored comments, activity records, shared types, and validators. - Added an additive migration and migration coverage for existing comments. - Updated reopen, resume, and wake behavior so agent comments create agent-class wakes and same-run completion comments remain inert. - Updated the implementation specification and regression coverage. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/cross-issue-influence-limit.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-comment-attribution-audit-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-comment-reopen-routes.test.ts packages/db/src/issue-comment-on-behalf-migration.test.ts` — 97 tests passed. - `pnpm -r typecheck` — passed, including migration safety checks. - `pnpm test:run` — server batch: 3,364 passed and 2 skipped; UI batch: 3,504 passed. One unrelated CLI doctor test warned because this agent runtime injects static AWS credentials. - `env -u AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID -u AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY pnpm exec vitest run cli/src/__tests__/secrets.test.ts` — 8 tests passed and confirmed the CLI failure was ambient-environment sensitive. - `pnpm build` — passed. ## Risks - The fixed enforcement timestamp changes production behavior automatically on 2026-08-11 00:00 UTC. Audit logs before that time provide rollout visibility. - The per-run counter serializes on the heartbeat-run row. This prevents concurrent attempts from racing past the cap but adds a small lock scope for cross-issue writes. - Existing comments can only be backfilled when their acting run or agent attribution is recoverable. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 in the Codex agent runtime. The runtime did not expose a context-window size. Reasoning, shell tools, code editing, and test execution were enabled.

[codex] Roll up May 17 branch changes (#6210)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the control plane for autonomous AI companies, so agent work needs visible ownership, recovery, and operator controls. > - This local branch had accumulated several related control-plane reliability and operator-experience fixes across recovery actions, watchdog folding, model-profile defaults, mentions, markdown editing, plugin launchers, and small UI polish. > - The branch needed to be converted into a PR against the current `origin/master` without losing dirty work or including lockfile/workflow churn. > - The safest standalone shape is a single rollup PR because the recovery/server/UI files overlap heavily across the local commits and splitting would create avoidable conflicts. > - This pull request replays the local branch onto latest `origin/master`, preserves the uncommitted work as logical commits, and adds a Zod 4 validator compatibility fix found during verification. > - The benefit is that the May 17 local branch can be reviewed and merged as one coherent, conflict-free branch under the 100-file Greptile limit. ## What Changed - Rebased the local May 17 branch work onto current `origin/master` in a dedicated worktree. - Preserved and committed previously dirty changes for recovery retry handling, plugin/sidebar launcher polish, and `.herenow` ignores. - Added recovery-action behavior for returning source issues to `todo` when retrying source-scoped recovery. - Included the existing local recovery/liveness/watchdog fold, Codex cheap-profile, markdown/mention, duplicate-agent, and UI polish commits from the branch. - Normalized shared validator `z.record(...)` schemas to explicit string-key records for Zod 4 compatibility. - Confirmed the PR has no `pnpm-lock.yaml` or `.github/workflows/*` changes and stays below the 100-file Greptile limit. ## Verification - `pnpm install --frozen-lockfile --ignore-scripts` - `npm run install` in `node_modules/.pnpm/sqlite3@5.1.7/node_modules/sqlite3` to build the local native sqlite3 binding after installing with scripts disabled - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/shared/src/validators/issue.test.ts packages/shared/src/project-mentions.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-model-profile.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-recovery-actions.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-agent-mutation-ownership-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-active-run-output-watchdog.test.ts server/src/__tests__/plugin-local-folders.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueRecoveryActionCard.test.tsx ui/src/components/Sidebar.test.tsx ui/src/components/SidebarAccountMenu.test.tsx ui/src/components/IssueProperties.test.tsx ui/src/components/MarkdownEditor.test.tsx ui/src/components/MarkdownBody.test.tsx ui/src/lib/duplicate-agent-payload.test.ts ui/src/pages/Routines.test.tsx` - First pass: 13 files passed with 201 passing tests; 3 server files failed before sqlite3 native binding was built. - After rebuilding sqlite3: `server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-model-profile.test.ts`, `server/src/__tests__/issue-recovery-actions.test.ts`, and `server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-active-run-output-watchdog.test.ts` passed/loaded; embedded Postgres tests were skipped by the local host guard. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/shared typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` ## Risks - Medium risk: this is a broad rollup PR across recovery semantics, server tests, shared validators, and UI surfaces. - Some embedded Postgres tests skipped locally due the host guard, so CI should provide the stronger database-backed signal. - UI changes were covered by component tests, but no browser screenshot was captured in this PR creation pass. - This branch may overlap with existing recovery/liveness PR work; merge this PR independently or restack/close overlapping branches rather than merging duplicate implementations together. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. Add ACPX local adapter runtime (#4893)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI-agent companies through a control plane that can start, supervise, and recover agent runs. > - Local adapters are the bridge between Paperclip issues and concrete agent runtimes such as Claude, Codex, and other ACP-compatible tools. > - The roadmap calls out broader “bring your own agent” and claw-style agent support, and ACPX gives Paperclip one path to normalize multiple ACP agents behind a single adapter. > - The branch needed to become one reviewable PR against current `paperclipai/paperclip:master`, without carrying stale base conflicts or generated lockfile churn. > - This pull request adds an experimental built-in `acpx_local` adapter, integrates it through the server/CLI/UI adapter surfaces, and adds regression coverage for runtime execution, skill sync, stream parsing, diagnostics, and log redaction. > - The benefit is that Paperclip can run Claude/Codex/custom ACP agents through ACPX while keeping operator configuration, skills, logging, and transcript rendering inside the existing adapter model. ## What Changed - Added `@paperclipai/adapter-acpx-local` with server execution, config schema, ACPX session handling, CLI formatting, UI config helpers, and stdout parsing. - Registered `acpx_local` across CLI, server, shared constants, UI adapter metadata, adapter capabilities, and agent creation/editing surfaces. - Added ACPX runtime execution support with persistent sessions, local-agent JWT environment handling, skill snapshots, runtime skill materialization, and isolation/security regressions. - Added ACPX adapter diagnostics and marked the adapter experimental in the UI. - Added command/env secret redaction for resolved command metadata in adapter-utils, server event storage, and the Agent Detail invocation UI. - Added Storybook coverage for ACPX config, transcript rendering, and skill states, plus PR screenshots under `docs/pr-screenshots/pap-2944/`. - Rebased the branch onto current `public-gh/master`; `pnpm-lock.yaml` is intentionally not included and there are no migration/schema changes. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/server/execute.test.ts packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/server/test.test.ts packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/cli/format-event.test.ts packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/ui/parse-stdout.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts server/src/__tests__/redaction.test.ts server/src/__tests__/acpx-local-execute.test.ts server/src/__tests__/acpx-local-skill-sync.test.ts server/src/__tests__/acpx-local-adapter-environment.test.ts server/src/__tests__/adapter-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-skills-routes.test.ts ui/src/adapters/metadata.test.ts` — 12 files, 87 tests passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-acpx-local typecheck` — passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` — passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` — passed. - Confirmed PR diff does not include `pnpm-lock.yaml`, database schema files, or migrations. Screenshots: ## Risks - Medium risk: this introduces a new built-in adapter package and touches runtime execution, adapter registration, agent config, skills, and transcript rendering. - ACPX and ACP agent behavior can vary by installed tool versions; the adapter is marked experimental to set operator expectations. - `pnpm-lock.yaml` is excluded per repository PR policy, so dependency lock refresh must be handled by the repo’s automation or maintainers. - No database migration risk: no schema or migration files changed. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Implement secrets service with local encryption, redaction, and runtime resolution
Add AES-256-GCM local encrypted secrets provider with auto-generated master key, stub providers for AWS/GCP/Vault, and a secrets service that normalizes adapter configs (converting sensitive inline values to secret refs in strict mode) and resolves secret refs back to plain values at runtime. Extract redaction utilities from agent routes into shared module. Redact sensitive values in activity logs, config revisions, and approval payloads. Block rollback of revisions containing redacted secrets. Filter hidden issues from list queries. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com> |
