Default new Pi agents to Paperclip Runner (#17142)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Users choose a harness during agent setup. > - Claude, Codex, and OpenCode already receive their qualified Runner default. > - Pi has a qualified native integration but new Pi agents still use the direct adapter. > - This change gives new Pi agents the native default on supported targets. > - Saved agents keep their runner and compatible settings. Legacy remains available in Advanced. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #17120, #14921, #14922, #14923, #14924, and #14956. Related generic default work: #15422. This PR is the separate Pi follow-up to the merged OpenCode change. **Current behavior** Choosing Pi for a new agent saves the direct Pi adapter. The native Pi integration remains behind the generic experimental flag. **Proposed behavior** Default new Pi agents to ACPX Pi on macOS ARM64/x64 and GNU/Linux x64 with supported glibc. Keep unsupported targets and explicit Legacy selections on the direct adapter. Require an explicit provider/model before test or hire. Permit model-free inactive setup drafts. **Reason and benefit** Users choose Pi once and receive its qualified runner. Saved agents retain their identity and settings. Conversions reject unsupported legacy thinking and launch settings instead of dropping them. ## What Changed - Add Pi to the shared platform/default contract and server creation selection. - Admit native Pi without the generic experimental flag. - Preserve provider models, credentials, workspace settings, exact thinking, and saved native policies. - Add Pi runner controls, branding, setup resume, onboarding, built-in configuration, and import handling. - Add managed Pi OpenRouter routing and matching native provider API-key accounts. Keep subscription and custom gateway exclusions. Clear alternate credentials and reject custom Pi provider overrides. - Keep Pi draft models empty instead of applying Claude's default model. - Verify setup against the pinned Pi runtime. For native Pi on the official OpenRouter route, reverify the API key live without requiring a global Legacy Pi CLI. - Match Pi’s bounded controller close window to its native snapshot cleanup and lifetime verification, preserving explicit caller deadlines and the mandatory drain/suspension proof. - Bind Pi sidecars to the package that owns the pinned native assets, including source and vendored server layouts. Other providers retain their existing package authority. - Keep protocol-owned finish/block tools out of the ACPX forwarded catalog. The trusted bridge installs these tools itself; the complete Rust authorization catalog and terminal receipt ledger remain intact. This fixes actual Pi session startup and applies to other ACPX consumers. - Advance Copilot’s shared-source attestation to v58 because it pins the shared files touched by Pi. Preserve immutable v57 bytes and historical decoding; Pi’s own release identity is unchanged. - Add regression coverage and update the paired maps and developer documentation. ## Verification - Passed: full repository typecheck and full production build on final head |

Default new OpenCode agents to Paperclip Runner (#17120)
Default new OpenCode agents to Paperclip Runner on qualified macOS and Linux x64 targets. Preserve saved runner choices, explicit Legacy selection, and unsupported-target fallback. Pi remains a separate change. Verified the complete browser path with a real OpenRouter connection: create the new agent, assign a task, observe its response and Done status, and reload to confirm persistence. CI passes and Greptile is 5/5 with no unresolved findings. Co-Authored-By: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(claude): default qualified macOS and Linux targets to Paperclip Runner (#15997)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip must run the selected agent on its selected host. > - Claude needs verified packages for each supported target. > - A Mac controller must select the correct Linux provider pack. > - New defaults must follow package and execution evidence. > - This PR adds Claude platform packaging and target-specific pack selection. > - Existing Codex Linux ARM64 behavior remains intact. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15683. This PR depends on #15993 and #15994. Related scope: #15422 and #15224. ## What Changed - Reuse the merged four-target daemon producer/consumer matrix. Add target-owned Linux provider packs and carry their immutable identities through release assembly and vendoring. - Reuse master’s landed pinned Claude SDK ARM64 executable admission and retain package-integrity, architecture and no-follow admission. - Select target-specific remote packs so Mac controllers can use Linux hosts without a development pack override. - Preserve read-only runtime context on SSH startup and resume without accepting unverified old content. - Check ordinary installed Claude readiness without injected package authority. Retain Codex and Linux x64 consumer checks. - Extend Claude automatic target selection for the remaining qualified package targets. Retain unsupported-platform and external-override behavior. - Qualify managed Daytona snapshot names through provider IDs during Claude Connect. Pin native acquisition to the measured ID. Preserve a revocation marker after failed probes or target edits, and block native acquisition until requalification instead of falling back to a mutable name. Preserve immutable-image proof, company and account boundaries, and Legacy acquisition. ## Verification - Reconciled with master `9179d8dcc3e908c217fde4f63c9d08ccf8132eeb` through the prerequisite stack, retaining the merged startup fix and latest Codex Linux ARM64 behavior. - [Four-target exact-source package qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39267321383) passed on source `04e0202ca81387b17cbe7fd094a8338648356fe9`: all four native builds, public-package assembly, Linux x64 verification and clean installed consumers on Apple Silicon, Intel Mac and Linux ARM64. The later master reconciliation adds shared OpenRouter attribution and changes runtime source. This historical result keeps its original source identity; [later qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39281100929) passed at `dca62c7aeb4b45f0dd91a8e18d386a16a2658ef8`. It predates the subsequent TypeScript startup fix. - Fresh local product acceptance on integrated source `b2c9fe43f9cd3bc5dd9d22552da0148845ba71a4` completed a useful file and follow-up through native Claude/Opus 5.5, High effort and the API-key connection. Both actual browser downloads were independently checked; the revision preserves the original body and session continuity. Total task estimates: $0.518432800. Ordinary web and API creation saved defaults with the native experiment disabled. - Local focused verification passed 993 startup/session tests, 243 UI tests, 12 workflow security tests, direct server/UI TypeScript checks, and token/palette gates before the last review changes. Initial DB-backed snapshot pin/revocation coverage passed 18 cases; the final serial route suites pass 122 credential/permission and 232 snapshot/environment cases after correcting a test hook timeout. Current-head cloud suites pass. - Preserved the failed pre-provider local fixture and its full pending reservation. The successful fixture has no unpriced or pending usage. Historical failed Cloud journeys, accounting holds, source identities and subscription limitations remain in the dated plan. - All Docker/Rust release production was performed in cloud CI. No local Docker image was built. An inadvertently invoked local Rust prerequisite was stopped. - Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs. - The final master merge preserves task-loading, permission, skill-retention and OpenRouter changes. Pi uses a fresh combined profile 27, preserving both historical profile-24 declarations; Copilot remains profile 22. Focused protocol checks passed 155 cases (one skipped), the updated Pi attestation check passed 18 (one skipped), and 91 evaluation/catalog checks passed. - Latest-application manual continuation passed in 37.942 seconds on `695e5c005a85bddc8711d3fcddcaf6b7e1fb64d0`, with High effort, native Opus 5.5, Anthropic API attribution, the same resumed Claude session, an independently checked 635-byte file and persisted Done status. It uses the earlier verified Mac daemon; the preceding-source package qualification passed at `dca62c7aeb4b45f0dd91a8e18d386a16a2658ef8`. That package run predates the small TypeScript startup fix and is not relabeled as qualification for it. - Upgrade limitation: changed compiled sidecar identity rejected old durable launch state and recovery hit session-open bounds before eventually resuming. That attempt was operator-cancelled and retained; the successful manual continuation does not qualify seamless upgrades. - Local latency profile, Opus 5.5/High unchanged: three alternating real-ACP loopback samples per variant reduce median provider-ready time from 5.081s to 4.034s. The matched real API task startup improves from 5.533s to 4.348s, but total reply time changes from 17.933s to 20.221s because agent work varies. This establishes a startup saving of about one second, not a consistent total-reply speedup. A real candidate follow-up passed in 20.146s and resumed the same saved session. The loopback fixture makes no external model requests; failed initial probes remain retained. - The startup change passes 107 focused runtime/effort/lease tests, 53 profile checks (one skipped), TypeScript checking and the TypeScript-only runtime build. Native hire fixture checks pass 70 tests; their first local run retained a socket-hangup failure and stale OpenCode expectation, both accounted for before the passing rerun. Broader required checks run in cloud CI. ## Risks - **Experience needs improvement:** successful connection setup still shows “Connection needs attention” because runtime checks are deferred. Cold provider-pack upload took 122–126 seconds per run while the task mainly showed “Thinking.” The tested Core-only preview excludes private Cloud UI plugins; this is not full Cloud distribution or subscription qualification. Desktop dark theme was tested; mobile and comprehensive accessibility were not. The portable report validates, but gallery interaction could not be inspected because host preview was queued. - The optional supply-chain scan returned neutral/inconclusive because GitHub Actions package coverage and infrastructure parsing are unavailable. It is not counted as a successful supply-chain qualification. Exact package, daemon and image integrity checks passed. - A stale, missing or wrong-architecture pack must fail admission. It must not change runner or target silently. - Provider-pack source changes invalidate affected earlier execution results. Existing unknown-cost and cleanup holds remain intact. - Live subscription execution remains unverified under the API-key qualification direction. Built-in authentication flows are retained. ARM64 cloud-image production is deferred. Merge and production deployment remain separate. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository tools, code execution and browser testing. The exact serving model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] Focused local tests and final cloud verification pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: default new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner (#15993)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip lets users choose an agent harness and account. > - The server resolves the runner for new agents. > - Claude still needs the same ordinary native-default journey as Codex. > - Existing agents must retain their runner, model and account. > - This PR defaults new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner with Opus 5.5. > - Users can connect and work without a runner override. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15683. This PR depends on #15994 and precedes #15997. Related scope: #15422, #13978 and #15224. ## What Changed - Resolve new Apple Silicon Claude agents to `paperclip_runner`, `provider: acpx`, `acpxAgent: claude`. Keep explicit Legacy, models, provider routing and saved execution. - Use `claude-opus-5-5` for ordinary Claude defaults and retain explicit overrides. - Reuse existing API-key/subscription connections, credential storage and checks. Generalize the shared Advanced runner control with Claude branding. - Carry configured effort into the shared v9 contract. Preserve compatible permissions, instructions, skills, timeouts and session behavior. Require Legacy for unsupported settings. - Qualify a new immutable managed Claude target at explicit Connect through the existing permission-gated probe. Use fresh scoped discovery for test and hire. Discard stale results and require an explicit Connect after settings change. - Retain merged Codex onboarding recovery, auth preparation, import/effort corrections and Grok Bot gates. - Check the Claude first-task wizard's saved default directly. Update configuration/runtime documentation and exact Opus 5.5 accounting. - Align hire fixtures with the merged host-environment restriction. Native agent-authenticated hires cannot inject host env settings; both creation endpoints verify that no extra agent is saved. ## Verification - Updated onto master `9179d8dcc3e908c217fde4f63c9d08ccf8132eeb` through #15994. Native input v9 carries effort while preserving v7 home modes and v8 Muse. Codex defaults remain unchanged. - Focused local verification passed 285 server tests, 323 UI tests, 124 setup/registry tests, and two v9 permission-pin transport cases. Direct server/UI TypeScript checks passed. An initial 30-second hook timeout was resolved by serial verification with a longer hook budget: all 122 credential/permission cases and 232 snapshot/environment cases pass. Direct server TypeScript checking also passes. - Ordinary web creation with the experiment disabled saved native Claude, Opus 5.5 and High effort without runner/model overrides. The actual product task and follow-up both succeeded on integrated source `b2c9fe43f9cd3bc5dd9d22552da0148845ba71a4` with the cloud-built daemon from `04e0202ca81387b17cbe7fd094a8338648356fe9`. The final master reconciliation also changes shared runtime source. Historical proof retains its source identity; a final-source cloud qualification is running before refreshing the preview daemon. - Both actual browser downloads were checked: v1 has three sections/six checkboxes (451 bytes); v2 preserves the original body and adds two Rollback checks (612 bytes). The original attachment stayed byte-identical. The follow-up records session resume and the same provider session. Total estimated API usage: $0.518432800, with no pending/unpriced usage in the successful fixture. - Fixed the live-discovered setup incompatibility: native API-key validation no longer depends on the global Legacy Claude CLI. The existing provider endpoint verifies the key without a paid prompt; subscription/custom routing probes remain intact. - Fixed security review's native-hire credential redirection: agent-supplied URLs, proxy/launch settings and other host environment controls are rejected before inheritance. Native credential references remain supported and partial edits use the saved harness. Added create/hire/update regression coverage. - Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs. - Docker and native release builds ran in cloud infrastructure. An inadvertent local Rust prerequisite was stopped; no local Docker build was run. ## Risks - Missing packages, authentication rejection, unsupported settings and unavailable models must fail explicitly. Existing agents retain saved execution; explicit runner changes use existing revision/session invalidation. - Subscription follow-up remains unverified; remaining live acceptance uses API keys per human steering. Historical accounting holds and the separate $50 ceiling remain intact. - The subscription acceptance limit remains explicit for review. No Claude database migration is introduced. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] Focused local tests and final cloud verification pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: default new Codex agents to Paperclip Runner on Linux and macOS (#15683)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source control plane for agent companies. > - People choose a harness when creating an agent. > - The server should resolve that harness to a qualified runner. > - Codex is the first harness in the staged default rollout. > - Saved agents must retain their execution choices. > - New Codex agents therefore use Paperclip Runner on qualified macOS/Linux targets, with an explicit Legacy override. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #16028, #15555, #15673, #15422, #15631, #15926, #15932, #16149. The runtime/install prerequisite and release repair are merged. This slice owns Codex creation, setup, configuration and preservation. Other harness defaults remain unchanged. It adds no database migration; incoming master migrations, required maps and regression coverage are retained. ## What Changed - Resolve `runner: auto | paperclip | legacy` at the common creation boundary across onboarding, API/CLI, hires, built-ins, plugins and imports. Freeze pending hires and export resolved execution choices. - Preserve existing runners on upgrades, unrelated edits and import updates, including compatible accounts, workspace settings, Codex effort and intentional clears. - Use the underlying harness picker and branding; put the runner override in Advanced. Use the shared dropdown and update production-component stories and creation contracts. - Support qualified Apple Silicon, Intel Mac, Linux x64 and Linux ARM64. Linux requires GNU libc 2.39+. Disabled, external, unsupported and unqualified combinations retain their applicable Legacy execution. - Test the selected runtime/account/model/environment. Ordinary Connect probes eligible immutable managed targets and refreshes scoped discovery. Creation/discovery do not provision. Auth, dependency, incompatible-setting and cleanup failures remain actionable without changing runners. - Keep setup probes read-only, preserve local/SSH isolation and resolve packaged assets before staging credentials. Bound cleanup reads by the remaining absolute deadline; physically close every owned ingress socket before endpoint release. Unconfirmed cleanup retains recovery state. - Preserve validated completed-onboarding callbacks through startup recovery. First file-producing work belongs to the child task and uses the existing dependency/block handoff and task-scoped registration. - Reuse existing E2E fixtures, artifact checks, reporting and controls. Keep Docker/Cargo/native compilation remote. Paperclip tarballs contain no Codex payloads; official optional npm platform dependencies remain. ## Verification Current tested head: `1c03a8815672d82c264a9b08d4ea1984e8fae107`. **Merge-ready: required CI, fresh review, package qualification, Mac core acceptance and Test task/follow-up acceptance pass.** The existing attachment and native-continuity oracles independently verify both Test downloads, run attribution and unchanged native/provider/workspace identities. The maintainer authorized a code-owner-review exception for this PR only. The first Test setup failure and normal Board completion-review friction are retained below. Actual post-merge packages and private Cloud distribution remain separate qualification gates. - [Current CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38564241625): all 48 ordinary jobs and required verify/E2E pass. Attempt 1 retained six simultaneous host-shutdown cancellations. One failed-only retry passes those six lanes and two aggregates, preserving 40 successes. Actual integration checkout `53104c1` combines this head with master `c80`; it is not relabeled as the branch tree. Fresh exact-head Greptile 5/5, 30 resolved threads, no actionable findings. - [Exact-source package qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38565287239): nine applicable jobs pass, nine conditional jobs skip. Four remote native producers; Linux x64 clean install; Intel Mac, Apple Silicon and Linux ARM64 native startup/physical cleanup controls. All 18 tarballs/four daemon source/hash/manifest bindings and 343 migrations through 0344 verify. No Codex payload is packed. These hosted tarballs are not a published npm canary. - Normal Apple Silicon installation and credential-free native startup/cleanup pass using the packaged daemon, with no source build or provider turn. Fresh installed DB initialization passes. Upgrade 651a→1c03 preserves all three complete execution configs, accounts, ten recorded run profiles, paused budgets, active incidents, cost summaries and two historical unpriced events. Historical recovery state is retained. - Cleanup regressions: four delayed-read baseline failures become 15 passing deadline/authority controls. No-acknowledgement and prior-error socket ownership regressions become 12 passing controls. Direct runtime/server types, maps: 35 areas / 176 IDs, diff checks and independent reviews pass. Permission/auth/reconnect policy and the 10-second setup budget remain intact. - Existing source coverage includes creation/selection/imports, pending approvals, recovery, account/lifecycle handling, mounted forms, dropdowns and E2E support. Full typechecks/tests/build/token and applicable Storybook checks pass in the recorded current CI; no duplicate suite or weakened grader. - Literal 9546 live Mac proof: ordinary Auto Codex onboarding, useful document, real completed-child callback/reply, seven successful native runs, manual follow-up and independently downloaded1,101-byte child file. Existing Legacy title edit/reload preserves execution; two real Legacy runs produce independently checked15/34-byte files. These remain historical source records. - Current literal 1c03 Mac core acceptance passes independent checks: ordinary Auto native Codex onboarding without runner override; only timeout 180 seconds/concurrency 1 saved; six successful native runs and six serialized turns (maximum overlap 1); both same-task continuity checks and five mechanical callback checks; actual rendered parent reply and exact child downloads. The useful handoff advances from revision 1 to 2. Both files are 48 bytes, SHA-256 `8b742bd4e8123a7c078f0a8d9f3449fbfa8a320d7d90be641a2818db3c53d92c` and `f42db9774fa06e804ab7d596fc8b922a2b638921c418b87d0111151d290a6afe`; exactly one byte changes and old history remains. The agent is paused with zero active runs/errors. Both artifact work products have `isPrimary=false`, and descriptive titles fail a stricter title-helper assumption; these retained results are scoped editorial follow-up, not new merge gates. Six source-bound screenshots are uploaded and verified in the private primary QA report. - [Literal 9546 managed proof](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-38485488621-1/index.html): original 19 assertions and completed judge pass, four native turns, child-bound240-byte file and session/workspace continuity. Checkout reports a verified generated target-lock mutation; full final porcelain was not retained. Signed execution-image identity remains separate from Core source. - Actual 651a Test deployment succeeds on one owned/pinned target. One ordinary Auto API-key Connect then fails native cleanup before hire. Controller turn/drain/suspend completion and service-recorded environment cleanup are observed; they do not certify physical deletion or native authority retirement. Failure/recovery/unknown holds are retained. No Legacy switch or unchanged paid retry. The two source repairs above require actual treatment. - [Current immutable Core preview](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38570365725) and matching DB/shared artifacts pass. One owned, pinned Test target serves exact `1c03`; identical migration history correctly skips the migrator. Ordinary Auto Codex Connect succeeds and hires native; saved native selection and QA bounds survive reload. The initial child preparation attempt fails before provider work, with actual stdout identifying `renewal_deadline`; its trigger remains unknown and the failure is retained. Normal Board **Try again** and **Resume** recover the child to Done, producing a browser-verified 44-byte file, SHA-256 `0a8458b1efcc2d7a0d815689458c4caab039a46c7c7a3e5805de6bc8b1a96ecc`. The actual parent callback reports the completed child document/file. The existing validator requires a parent-owned attachment, so recovery enters normal Review; after byte checking, normal **Approve completion** reaches parent Done. No forced status or duplicate parent file is used. The validator is unchanged from integrated and current master. Autonomous initial callback-to-Done is not proven. The same-child follow-up completes document revision 2 and publishes a second independently downloaded 44-byte file, SHA-256 `22022257300fae762784632d08d3bbe0bab61e2ce81f91864a14dcd7aa464591`; only the revision digit changes. The unchanged existing native-continuity and attachment oracles pass. All ten recorded runs are terminal: nine native successes and the retained pre-provider setup failure. The QA agent is paused with zero active runs. The pre-existing parent evidence scope mismatch is a separate follow-up, with ordinary completion review exercised rather than a forced status or relaxed validation. This unsigned Core preview remains distinct from post-merge private Cloud composition. ## Risks - Saved agents are not migrated. Explicit runner changes use normal configuration/session rules; historical runs retain their recorded execution. - Native readiness depends on verified assets and server-owned target qualification. A Legacy probe, HTTP200 or successful account save cannot prove native readiness. - Recovery exceptions remain restricted to validated completed-onboarding reports; process-loss, ownership and terminal-state safeguards remain active. Unexecuted live journeys stay open. - Linux ARM paid tasks, Windows, Alpine and 32-bit ARM remain deferred. Cold Cargo cache misses are recorded; no warm-cache speedup is claimed. - Historical invoices/physical cleanup remain unconfirmed and held. After merge, exact published npm canary, signed standard image/migrator, private composition and serving/live acceptance still require qualification. Production deployment/default promotion is not authorized. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, tools, code execution and parallel agents. Exact serving snapshot and context-window size are not exposed. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used with available version and capability details - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have linked public issues or PRs above - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket id - [x] I have run the stated focused tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation - [x] I have considered and documented risks - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green on the current candidate - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open findings on the current candidate - [x] I will address all reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Own agent hiring and termination in a lifecycle module (#15631)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Agent creation, approval, pause, and termination change whether an agent can work. > - These changes currently use separate service and database paths. > - Some agents need setup after their record exists and before their harness can run. > - This PR adds one module that owns those state changes and their transactions. > - The module records progress and retries incomplete work after a server restart. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Problem or motivation** A hire can become active before its execution environment is ready. Direct agent state writes also bypass one common lifecycle boundary. Termination does not have a durable step for resource cleanup. **Proposed solution** Use agent lifecycle commands for hiring, approval, pause, resume, and termination. Keep proposed hires pending until approval. Prepare each approved hire, test its saved harness configuration, and then permit work. Wait for required plugin work before completing a step. **Alternatives considered** A general database commit hook would expose transaction details to callers. A timer alone would delay each new hire. This module owns each command transaction and starts its worker after commit. A periodic scan recovers work after a process stops. **Roadmap alignment** This change adds the lifecycle boundary for the existing agent and plugin systems. It does not add a user interface or a provider implementation. It replaces the lifecycle delivery approach in #15391. Related proposals include #11475 and #13099; this change does not add their external executor protocols. ## What Changed - Add durable approval, preparation, verification, pause, resume, stop, and cleanup states. - Keep agent creation, lifecycle state, configuration writes, and agent record deletion behind `modules/agent-lifecycle`. Keep validation, credential rules, reads, onboarding, invitations, general approvals, and company data deletion in their services. - Commit a hire before the remaining onboarding or invitation work. Serialize requests with the existing dedicated database connection helper. Reuse the hire after a failed attempt. - Keep accepted work in the run queue during setup. Require execution and cleanup evidence before completing pause or termination. - Retain the original credential owner when approving migrated hires. - Start lifecycle work after each command commits. Use database leases and revision checks for retries and late results. - Add a generic required plugin method and capability. Store the required plugin IDs for each agent. Track host and plugin completion separately. - Keep harness verification and credential rules in services. Supply their results to lifecycle through explicit ports. Reject failed logins and incomplete probes. - Remove reverse imports from lifecycle adapters into services. Share record queries and validation below both layers. - Use one hire decision path for agent IDs and approval IDs. Resolve the approval and agent change in one transaction. Expose policy reconciliation on the command object. - Save configuration and verification invalidation through one module operation. Ordinary commands own their transaction. Restrict the shared transaction integration to its listed callers. Reject identity, company, accounting, timestamp, and unknown fields. - Require completed termination before deleting agent records. The company deletion service calls the module through a separate deletion interface. - Save an approved secret before applying its agent binding. A failed binding leaves the secret approved. A retry reuses it. - Remove old permission and metadata export files. Move hire configuration rules out of lifecycle persistence. - Report failed worker steps and scans with operation context and known error codes. Omit provider messages, stacks, and configuration values. Document ordinary application use and extension rules. - Recover expired native owners only after execution stops. Retry cleanup of failed retained leases. Wait for setup in the live smoke script. - Keep manual, budget, and company pause reasons separate. Guard execution status writes with the ready state. - Add a migration, boundary checks, regression tests, and a lifecycle guide. Keep the current UI. - Limit periodic policy checks to 100 eligible agents per minute. Continue from the last agent ID. Exclude pending hires and agents in termination or a final state. Keep explicit company and budget updates immediate. ## Verification - Latest head `ccc3c86b0` aligns the shared status update schema with the PATCH route. All 15 shared tests, 104 server route/OpenAPI tests, 2 CLI tests, and shared/server/CLI TypeScript checks pass. The Greptile comment is fixed. CI is running; no new Apex review was requested for this small fix. - Rebase `75708ac94` rebases onto master at `2eb5187e4`. The backup test uses the shared 90-second timeout from master; the older timeout commit was removed. The affected backup test passes. - Agent budget edits now pass the target agent ID through enforcement. All 50 affected tests, server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass. Both configuration update paths have regression coverage. CI is running on the latest head. No new Apex review was requested for these small fixes. - Rebase `9b568666a` preserves the run-control extraction and delivery-work startup changes from master. All 559 affected tests, server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass. CI and Apex review are running on the final head. - The policy scan fix passes 56 lifecycle and diagnostic tests, 24 policy and caller tests, and 11 boundary tests. A regression test checks the page limit, interval, excluded states, and cursor wraparound. - Rebase `fd4698750` passes all 611 tests in eight affected lifecycle, route, and heartbeat suites. Server TypeScript and all 11 module boundary tests pass. The company deletion rollback and concurrent hire tests are included. - Follow-up `00aac7646` fixes the failed decision deletion test and the public update schema. All 126 affected server tests, 8 shared tests, 2 CLI tests, and 11 boundary tests pass. Shared, server, CLI, and UI TypeScript checks pass. - Server TypeScript passes: `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit`. - All 11 boundary tests pass: `node --test scripts/check-module-boundaries.test.mjs`. The repository boundary scan also passes. - All 68 lifecycle, failure diagnostic, and harness verification tests pass. Tests reject forbidden fields through the root command, combined transition command, and restricted transaction integration. They also check invalid fields returned by configuration preparation. - Failure tests cover host work, plugin work, claims, renewals, deferrals, and scans. Log tests check known error codes and exclusion of private error contents. - All 355 tests in 10 existing caller suites pass. These tests cover secret approval, pairing, pending hires, credentials, company import, built-in agents, managed agents, instructions, and skills. - The branch is rebased onto `origin/master` at `2eb5187e4`. The queue guards and cancellation lock fix use the extracted heartbeat queue. Agent cancellation uses the extracted run-control file. The source diff scan found no secrets or private URLs. - Earlier checks cover approval retries, rollback, late verification results, policy holds, deletion rollback, concurrent company deletion, and queue admission during setup. - Before the rebase, CI passed on `00aac7646` and Greptile Apex rated it 5/5 with no open comments. CI and a new Apex review are pending for the rebased commit. The branch has no merge conflicts. - The full local build and native Dot suite were not run. The host has no Cargo. No live provider test was run. ## Risks - Background policy recovery takes more than one minute when more than 100 agents are eligible. Explicit company and budget updates still reconcile immediately. - The restricted configuration integration keeps an agent reference and its dependent records in one transaction. It cannot change a budget or invoke a lifecycle transition. A periodic scan starts pending setup after that transaction commits. - Secret approval and binding use separate transactions. A failed binding can leave an approved secret with no agent binding. - New approved hires remain unavailable until setup and verification complete. Existing clients see `paused` during these steps. This PR does not change the UI. - Migration `0320_daily_onslaught.sql` maps existing statuses and pause reasons. It does not create external resources or claim that an existing harness passed verification. - Use a coordinated server update for this migration. Older server versions can write legacy status without the new lifecycle checks. - A failed onboarding or invitation request can leave a committed hire. A retry reuses that hire and completes the remaining records. - Deletion requires completed termination. Company deletion can require another request while cleanup is pending. - Required plugins must make repeated calls safe and reject older revisions. A disabled or removed required plugin blocks completion until it is restored. - A new hire can run a second harness test after the existing UI test. Some adapters can charge for this test. - No live provider test was run. Provider implementation and resource backfill remain separate work. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with reasoning, code tools, and local test execution. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue in this PR with the feature request field labels - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation - [x] I have considered and documented risks - [x] Targeted local tests pass - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green on the new commit - [x] Greptile Apex is 5/5 with no open comments on the new commit - [x] I will address review comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: add personal primary agents (#15470)
Add a personal primary agent per company and user. Initialize it from the first human-created agent, expose profile-only switching with confirmation, and use it after recent choices for task and Chat defaults. Persist authenticated preferences, preserve lifecycle and membership rules, keep selections out of shared audit events, and document the API contract. Include the reviewed Storybook surfaces and regression coverage for concurrent choices, onboarding, cross-device updates, and browser journeys. Co-Authored-By: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

test: remove the no-op sequential describe modifier (#15286)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Paperclip runs the server and runner test suites with Vitest. > - Vitest 5 removes the deprecated `describe.sequential` property, so the pending Vitest 5 upgrade fails the type-check and test jobs. > - `describe.sequential` only changes behaviour inside a `describe.concurrent` suite, or when `sequence.concurrent` is on. > - This repository has neither, so the modifier changed nothing at run time. > - The benefit is that the Vitest 5 upgrade can land, and the test files lose a modifier that did no work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs: #12969 ## What Changed - Replace every `describe.sequential` use with a plain `describe` call. - Drop the `{ concurrent: false }` suite option from the two runner test files. - Add a comment to `server/vitest.config.ts` that records why these suites must run one test at a time. - Leave the package manifests and the lockfile unchanged. ## Why the modifier did nothing The Vitest documentation states that `describe.sequential` is useful to run tests in sequence inside a `describe.concurrent` suite, or with the `--sequence.concurrent` option. `sequence.concurrent` defaults to `false`. This repository satisfies neither condition: - No test file uses `describe.concurrent`, `it.concurrent`, or `test.concurrent`. - `server/vitest.config.ts` sets `sequence.concurrent: false`, with `maxWorkers: 1`, `maxConcurrency: 1`, and `isolate: true`. - `packages/paperclip-runner/vitest.config.ts` sets no `sequence` block, so the `false` default applies. `packages/db` and `cli` already run the same embedded-Postgres suites with a plain `describe`, and those jobs are green. The server package was the only outlier. The modifier did carry one real piece of knowledge: these suites need their tests to run one at a time. The new comment in `server/vitest.config.ts` records that reason next to the setting that enforces it. ## Verification - `git grep` for `describe.sequential` returns nothing outside `node_modules`. - The author ran the changed server test files under the installed Vitest 4, and the results match the results without this change. - Two very large embedded-Postgres test files exceeded the author's local memory limit, so the CI test jobs cover those two. - The two changed runner test files have pre-existing local failures caused by a missing Rust toolchain and a missing global `pnpm` binary. The failures are identical with and without this change. - The author type-checked the changed files and found no new error. - CI must pass the typecheck, build, server test, and runner verify jobs. ## Risks - Low risk. Suite execution stays serial, because the Vitest config enforces it. - The change adds no dependency and changes no package manifest or lockfile. - A future change that turns `sequence.concurrent` on would break these suites. The new config comment warns against it. ## Model Used - Claude Sonnet 5 — code edits and local verification. - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5 — the earlier revision of this branch. ## Test plan - [x] Every CI check reaches a terminal green state. fix(agents): grant configuration access by default (#15283)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agent work and permissions for a company. > - Agent setup can require one agent to configure another agent. > - New standard agents could create agents, but they had no direct configuration grant. > - Existing agents must keep their current permissions after an upgrade. > - The requested new-agent defaults include 13 more direct permissions for suggestions, skills, tools, audit, inbox, and task assignment. > - This pull request adds the 14-grant set at creation and approval activation, retains it through invitations, and keeps existing agents unchanged. > - The change keeps low trust and built-in agents on their narrower permissions. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** The agent creation and approval flows, and the agent configuration authorization path. **Current behavior** A new standard agent can create an agent. It cannot make protected changes to a peer agent unless an operator adds an `agents:configure` grant. **Proposed behavior** Add direct grants for `agents:configure`, `agents:suggest-changes`, `skills:create`, `skills:suggest-changes`, `tools:manage_connections`, `tools:manage_profiles`, `tools:view_audit`, `audit:view_agent_actions`, `tools:use`, `tools:manage_runtime`, `inbox:manage`, `tasks:assign`, `tasks:assign_scope`, and `tasks:manage_active_checkouts` to new standard agents. Scope `tasks:assign_scope` to the agent’s reporting subtree. Keep existing agents and their grants unchanged. **Reason and benefit** New standard agents can complete agent setup and the requested tool, skill, inbox, and task workflows under existing route, scope, and approval checks. **Breaking changes** Existing agents keep their current permissions. There is no permission migration. Related PR: #12212 adds scoped grant routes. This PR changes the default grant. ## What Changed - Add the 14 requested direct grants in agent creation and approval activation. Keep them when invitation approval replaces grants, preserving explicit scopes. Remove them when an agent is deleted. - Apply defaults only to new agents. Remove the existing-agent permission migration, its snapshot, and its journal entry. Preserve existing scoped grants. - Add permission, scope, invitation, and existing-agent regression tests. Document all default and excluded permissions. - Prevent agent keys from creating, changing, or restoring host-executed process or local adapter command settings, and from restoring workspace commands through rollback. ## Verification - Run `node_modules/.bin/vitest run server/src/__tests__/agent-default-configure-grants.test.ts server/src/__tests__/invite-join-grants.test.ts packages/db/src/migration-snapshot-drift.test.ts`. All 15 tests pass. These cover new-agent defaults, unchanged existing grants, pending approval, invitation grants, and migration history. - Run `node_modules/.bin/tsc -p server/tsconfig.json --noEmit`. It passes. - Run `packages/db/node_modules/.bin/tsx packages/db/src/check-migration-numbering.ts` and `packages/db/node_modules/.bin/tsx packages/db/src/check-migration-safety.ts`. Both pass. - Confirm that this PR has no files under `packages/db/src/migrations/` in its final diff. - GitHub CI at `e8173b2c41` passes build, typecheck, server suites, browser shards, and canary verification. One unchanged OpenCode transport test reached its five-second timeout in the first Runner shard run. That test passes locally in 2.55 seconds. The shard passed on one retry. All 54 checks pass, with two expected skips. - Greptile gives this exact head 5/5. Security review passes. The PR has no unresolved review threads or merge conflicts. ## Risks - The 14 default permissions apply only to new standard agents. Existing permissions stay unchanged. Low trust and managed built-in agents are excluded. - New grants include connection, runtime, and active-checkout management. Existing company, responsible-user, scope, and approval checks remain in force. The default inbox grant carries a responsible-user-only scope so it cannot override another user's inbox settings. - Protected changes still need the responsible user's authority when that check applies. Company boundaries and approval gates still apply. - Agent-authenticated requests cannot configure process adapters or host command settings on local adapters. Known provider credential references remain allowed, as do narrow plain authentication overrides on new peers when the caller uses an AI connection pool. Arbitrary environment settings remain blocked. Board operators retain the host configuration paths. > I checked `ROADMAP.md`. This is a narrow fix to existing agent configuration behavior. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 series. This runtime did not expose its exact hosted model ID or context window. This revision uses OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex with tool use, code execution, and tests. The runtime does not expose the exact hosted model ID or context window. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Validate heartbeat run IDs before database lookups (#13657)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Operators inspect heartbeat runs, logs, and provider traces through the API. > - These routes use UUID database keys. > - A malformed path value such as `undefined` reaches the database and causes a server error. > - This pull request validates run IDs before those lookups. > - Valid requests keep the existing company and permission checks. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Related: Refs #8135. That proposal guards actor run headers and activity writes; this fix covers heartbeat run path parameters. **What happened?** A request such as `GET /api/heartbeat-runs/undefined` passes a non-UUID value to a UUID lookup and returns a server error. Run logs and the other heartbeat run endpoints have the same unchecked path input. **Expected behavior** Reject malformed run IDs with HTTP 400 before any run lookup. Preserve valid run reads, company isolation, and the existing board and instance-admin checks. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Request a heartbeat run endpoint with `undefined`, `null`, another malformed ID, or a UUID with surrounding whitespace. 2. Observe the database UUID error. 3. Run the route regressions before and after this change. **Paperclip version or commit** Confirmed on master at `6d0342868`. **Deployment mode** The defect affects API deployments backed by PostgreSQL. Regression tests exercise the actual Express routes and authorization code with stubbed services. The historical request does not identify the originating client, so this change does not alter a guessed UI caller. ## What Changed - Share strict run-ID validation across the 12 heartbeat run endpoints in the agent router. - Keep existing board and instance-admin gates ahead of validation. Keep valid-run company and telemetry checks intact. - Reject surrounding whitespace, which the shared UUID helper accepts but PostgreSQL rejects. - Encode the UUID constraint and document the 400 response in OpenAPI. Test the generated parameter pattern on all 12 endpoints. - Cover malformed IDs on every affected endpoint, uppercase UUIDs, missing and cross-company runs, and permission precedence. Use UUID-shaped run fixtures in existing route tests. ## Verification - Before the fix: four malformed-ID regression cases fail; three access-control cases pass. - Focused agent route, permission, cross-company, and OpenAPI suites: 154 tests passed, including the final uppercase-UUID case. - Direct server typecheck passed: `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit`. - The full local test attempt is still running; the complete Linux test suite passed in CI. Local results will be recorded when it finishes. - Complete Linux CI passed on the exact head: 53 checks passed, two non-applicable checks skipped. One untouched preview-service readiness test failed initially; its three targeted cases passed locally and the failed-jobs-only CI rerun passed. Greptile scored the final head 5/5 with no unresolved comments. - Full local `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` reach the native runner step and stop because `cargo` is absent. The complete Linux CI checks passed. ## Risks Low risk: this changes malformed route inputs to HTTP 400. Valid UUID requests keep their existing lookup and authorization paths. There is no migration, dependency, provider operation, or configuration change. The separate activity router and actor run headers are outside this change. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with code editing, shell execution, and test tools. The exact context window size was not exposed. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run focused tests locally and they pass; full-check limits are recorded above - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(agents): hired agents inherit provider credential references (#13268)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Agent adapters need provider credentials to start work > - A hired agent can lack the credential reference that its hiring agent already uses > - The child agent then cannot authenticate, even when the company has a valid credential > - This pull request copies matching credential references from the hiring agent to the hired agent > - The benefit is that hired agents can start with the provider access that the hiring agent already uses ## Linked Issues or Issue Description This change relates to [PR #9920](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/9920), which covers credential inheritance for other agent creation paths. This pull request covers hiring-specific inheritance and fixed Claude OAuth binding checks. ### What existing behavior does this improve? The agent hire route builds the child adapter configuration from the hire request only. ### Current behavior A hired agent does not receive matching provider credential references from its hiring agent. The child agent cannot run when the request omits the credential. ### Proposed behavior The hire route inherits matching credential references from the hiring agent. The request keeps priority. A Claude hire that supplies any Claude credential inherits none. ### Reason and benefit The child agent can use the provider access that the hiring agent already uses. The change copies references only and never copies raw token values. ### Breaking changes None. The change affects only hires that need an inherited reference. ## What Changed - Copy matching credential references from the hiring agent into the hired agent adapter configuration. - Preserve pinned versions, `required`, and `allowMissingOverride` fields on each copied reference. - Keep hire-request credentials ahead of inherited credentials. - Reject inherited fixed Claude OAuth bindings unless the parent agent passes company, adapter, and exact-binding checks inside the same transaction. - Add route and service tests for inheritance, precedence, and binding validation. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server src/__tests__/agent-hire-auth-inheritance-routes.test.ts src/__tests__/agents-claude-oauth-binding.test.ts` — 60 passed. - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server src/__tests__/agent-hire-idempotency-routes.test.ts src/__tests__/agents-service-secret-bindings.test.ts src/__tests__/secrets-service-user-secret-owner-scoped.test.ts` — 28 passed. - `tsc --noEmit` in `server/` — the error count matches the merge base, with no error in either changed source file. - `git diff --check` — clean. ## Risks Low risk. The route copies references, not raw tokens. The request keeps precedence. Company, adapter, and exact-binding checks protect the inherited Claude OAuth path. ## Model Used Codex, OpenAI GPT-5, with code execution and review support. The implementation commit predates this pull request handoff. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: nickyleach <331803+nickyleach@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(security): harden privileged server boundaries (#12776)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - The server controls secrets, host files, outbound requests, and workspace commands > - A red-team review found cases where restricted callers could cross these trust boundaries > - These cases could expose credentials or let untrusted input reach privileged resources > - This pull request applies least-privilege checks at each affected server boundary > - The benefit is safer agent execution without changing the private-instance bootstrap contract ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** Several server paths used authorization, redaction, or content-delivery rules that were too broad. Restricted agent keys could obtain company-level operational data. Some adapter and instruction paths could reach server-owned network or file resources without the required owner approval. **Expected behavior** Paperclip must redact credential values, enforce restricted-key scopes, guard outbound network access, prevent same-origin script execution, and reserve host-level file and command controls for authorized operators. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Configure an authenticated development instance at the parent commit. 2. Exercise the affected APIs with a restricted agent key or a non-instance-admin company user. 3. Observe that the parent commit returns privileged data or accepts a privileged operation. 4. Repeat on this branch and observe a redacted response, a safe download, or an HTTP 403 response. **Paperclip version or commit** The findings reproduce from commit `39898ab22` and are fixed by this pull request. **Deployment mode** Authenticated self-hosted server and local development modes. **Installation method** Built from source with pnpm. ## What Changed - Redact generic secret `value` and `token` fields recursively in structured logs. - Classify exact and separator-suffixed `KEY` environment names as secrets in company exports. - Limit restricted self-identity responses and protect company run, log, and secret catalog APIs. - Route HTTP adapter requests through DNS-pinned SSRF protection with exact private-origin allowlisting. - Download HTML, SVG, and other script-capable assets with `nosniff` and a sandbox CSP. - Require instance-admin access for external instruction roots and exports that read them. - Block agent-authenticated host command persistence across supported workspace runtime shapes. - Apply the central runtime-management decision before workspace command controls. - Keep the documented first-user instance-admin claim contract unchanged. - Add regression tests and server-owner configuration documentation. ## Verification - `pnpm -r typecheck` passes. - The Node 24 remediation suite passes with 365 tests. It skips 25 environment-gated tests. - `pnpm build` passes under Node 24. - `git diff --check` passes. - The full local runner reaches known macOS-only general-server harness failures before the serialized route lane. The Linux PR matrix is the authoritative full-suite gate. ## Risks - Restricted agent keys now receive HTTP 403 responses from company-wide run, log, and secret catalog endpoints. - Script-capable assets now download instead of rendering inline. - External instruction roots now require instance-admin access. - Private HTTP adapter endpoints now require an exact origin in `PAPERCLIP_HTTP_ADAPTER_PRIVATE_ENDPOINT_ALLOWLIST`. - Public HTTP adapter endpoints remain enabled. Redirects and metadata or link-local targets remain blocked. - No database migration is required. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. fix(agents): redact plaintext env values in agent read and mutation responses (#9860)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Agents are configured through `adapterConfig`, whose `env` block
holds the credentials an agent needs to talk to its provider (API keys,
tokens, and similar)
> - Those bindings come in several shapes: a legacy bare string, `{
type: "plain", value }`, and the indirection forms `{ type: "secret_ref"
}` / `{ type: "user_secret_ref" }`
> - Every endpoint that serializes an agent returned `adapterConfig` as
stored, so every `plain` binding was returned verbatim in the API
response
> - That means any caller able to read an agent — including the agent
itself via `GET /api/agents/me` — received live credentials in
plaintext, and those values then propagate into client state, logs, and
network traces
> - The exposure spans three response families that share no common
serializer: the single-agent detail reads, the company agent-list read,
and the create/update/lifecycle routes that echo the stored row straight
back
> - This pull request routes all three through one presenter that
redacts `plain` env bindings, so the leak is closed server-side and
cannot be bypassed by the caller
> - The benefit is that agent credentials stop appearing in API
responses while `secret_ref` indirection continues to work unchanged
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
No public upstream issue exists for this, so the underlying bug is
described inline below following
`.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug_report.yml`.
**What happened?**
Every endpoint that serializes an agent returned the full plaintext
value of each `adapterConfig.env` entry whose `type` was `"plain"` (and
each legacy bare-string binding). Any actor authorized to read an agent
received that agent's live credentials in the response body. Three
distinct response families were affected:
- **Single-agent reads** — `GET /api/agents/{id}` and `GET
/api/agents/me`, via `buildAgentDetail`.
- **Company agent list** — `GET /api/companies/{companyId}/agents`,
which serializes rows directly and therefore does not inherit any fix
applied to `buildAgentDetail`. Callers that pass the configuration-read
check received unredacted rows for every agent in the company in a
single request, making this the broadest of the three.
- **Mutation responses** — agent create, `PATCH /api/agents/{id}`, and
the `pause` / `resume` / `clear-error` / `approve` / `terminate` routes,
each of which echoes the stored row back to the caller.
**Expected behavior**
Read endpoints should never emit stored plaintext credentials. `plain`
bindings should be replaced with a redaction sentinel before
serialization, while `secret_ref` and `user_secret_ref` bindings — which
contain no secret material — pass through untouched.
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Configure an agent with an `adapterConfig.env` entry such as `{
"OPENAI_API_KEY": { "type": "plain", "value": "sk-example" } }`.
2. Call `GET /api/agents/{id}` (or authenticate as that agent and call
`GET /api/agents/me`).
3. Observe `sk-example` returned verbatim in the response body.
4. Call `GET /api/companies/{companyId}/agents` as a
configuration-reading caller and observe `sk-example` returned verbatim
for that agent alongside every other agent's credentials.
5. Call `PATCH /api/agents/{id}` with any unrelated field (for example
`{ "title": "Renamed" }`) and observe `sk-example` returned verbatim in
the mutation response.
**Paperclip version or commit**
Reproduced on `master` at `f12bb27b`.
**Deployment mode**
Self-hosted / local development server.
## What Changed
- `server/src/redaction.ts`: adds `redactAgentAdapterConfig`, which
rewrites every bare-string or `{ type: "plain", value }` env binding to
`{ type: "plain", value: "***REDACTED***" }` and passes `secret_ref` /
`user_secret_ref` bindings through unchanged. Reuses the existing
`REDACTED_EVENT_VALUE` and `isSecretRefBinding` /
`isUserSecretRefBinding` / `isPlainBinding` helpers — no new
dependencies.
- `server/src/redaction.ts`: `env` is destructured out and sanitized
only by `redactAgentEnvBinding`, while the remaining adapter keys go
through `redactEventPayload`. Previously the already-redacted `env` was
passed back through `sanitizeRecord`, so each binding was processed
twice — safe only because the sentinel is a fixed point of that second
pass. The two paths are now disjoint, making the invariant structural
rather than coincidental.
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: `buildAgentDetail` applies
`redactAgentAdapterConfig` before serialization, so `GET
/api/agents/{id}` and `GET /api/agents/me` both redact at the response
layer. Restricted views inherit the same protection.
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: adds `redactAgentRowForResponse`, the
single presenter for every response that emits a raw agent row, and
applies it to the company agent-list route and to the create / update /
pause / resume / clear-error / approve / terminate routes. It composes
with `redactForRestrictedAgentView` rather than replacing it: that
helper is an authorization filter (blank the whole config for low-trust
actors), this one is secret hygiene (mask values for every actor scope),
and the two invariants stay independent. `buildAgentDetail` now
delegates to the same presenter instead of inlining the call.
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: adds `restoreRedactedAgentEnv` on the
PATCH path so a client that round-trips a redacted detail response back
through `PATCH /api/agents/{id}` does not zero out stored values —
redacted-sentinel entries matching an existing key are restored from
storage.
## Verification
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit` — clean.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run
agent-permissions-routes.test.ts` — 57 tests pass.
- Adjacent suites (`redaction`, `agent-adapter-validation-routes`,
`agent-cross-tenant-authz-routes`, `agents-pending-approval-config`,
`agents-service-secret-bindings`, `built-in-agent-routes`,
`plugin-managed-agents`, `agent-skills-routes`) — 8 files, 72 tests
pass, no regressions.
- Both new route tests were confirmed to **fail** with the route changes
reverted and pass with them applied, so they genuinely pin the behaviour
rather than passing incidentally.
Tests added:
- `server/src/__tests__/redaction.test.ts`: covers legacy-string, `{
type: "plain" }`, `secret_ref`, and `user_secret_ref` bindings,
asserting the plaintext value never appears in the serialized result;
plus coverage that non-env adapter keys are still sanitized, that env
binding shapes survive intact, and that configs with no `env` block are
handled.
- `server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts`: `GET
/api/agents/{id}` asserts redaction rather than plaintext passthrough;
new `GET /api/agents/me` redaction test across the same binding shapes;
new test asserting the `PATCH` round-trip preserves stored values; new
test asserting the board `GET /api/companies/{companyId}/agents`
response redacts every binding shape; new test asserting a mutation
response redacts rather than echoing the stored plaintext.
No real secret values appear in any test, fixture, or commit message.
## Risks
- **Behavioral change for API consumers.** Any client that read a
plaintext credential out of an agent detail, agent-list, or mutation
response will now receive `***REDACTED***`. This is the intended
security fix, but it is a breaking change for such consumers, which must
move to `secret_ref` indirection.
- **Mutation responses are redacted too.** Callers that previously
relied on a create or update response to echo back the credential they
had just written must now read it from their own request. This is
consistent with the `restoreRedactedAgentEnv` round-trip path, which
already assumes the client holds a redacted copy.
- **Round-trip data loss, mitigated.** A client that GETs an agent and
PATCHes the object straight back would otherwise persist the sentinel
over the real value. `restoreRedactedAgentEnv` restores redacted entries
from storage; the round-trip is covered by a regression test. A PATCH
that *intentionally* sets a value literally equal to the sentinel is not
distinguishable and would be treated as "unchanged" — an acceptable
trade-off given the sentinel is not a plausible credential.
- **No migration.** Stored data is untouched; redaction happens purely
at serialization time, so the change is fully reversible by revert.
- **Overlap with existing PRs** — see the duplicate-search note below.
Maintainers may prefer to consolidate rather than merge this in
isolation.

## Duplicate search
Searching open and closed PRs for prior art surfaced several overlapping
efforts against the same defect. Linking them for maintainer triage — I
am not claiming this PR supersedes them, and consolidation may well be
preferable:
- #9823 — `fix(security): redact adapterConfig secrets on all agent read
endpoints` (closest overlap)
- #8779 — `fix(server): redact agent config secrets in read and mutation
responses`
- #8330 — `fix(server): redact adapterConfig.env for cross-actor agent
reads`
- #4856 — `fix(server): redact adapter env secrets in agent API
responses`
- #4763 — `fix(server): redact adapter_config secrets in agent detail
responses`
- #1839 — `fix: redact secret env vars from agent API responses`
- #4967 — `fix(routines): redact adapterConfig.env in GET
/api/routines/{id}` (same class, routines surface)

Remove cheap model profiles (#12683)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agents that use different model providers and adapters. > - Paperclip must keep agent execution rules clear and predictable. > - The cheap-model profile added a second execution mode across adapters, task recovery, APIs, and the UI. > - That mode increased configuration and recovery complexity. > - This pull request removes the cheap-model profile as a product feature. > - The benefit is one model-selection path for normal work and recovery work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** This change simplifies model selection across agent configuration, task execution, recovery, and adapter capabilities. **Current behavior** Paperclip exposes cheap-model profiles in adapter metadata, agent runtime configuration, task overrides, recovery rules, APIs, and the board UI. Recovery work can select a different model profile from the agent's configured model. **Proposed behavior** Paperclip uses the agent's configured model for normal work and recovery work. Status-only recovery stays limited to coordination work. The API rejects legacy model-profile configuration. A migration removes stored model-profile values from existing agent, issue, and historical revision records. **Reason and benefit** One model path reduces configuration, API, UI, and recovery complexity. It also prevents status recovery from becoming a separate product-level model-routing feature. **Breaking changes** This change removes model-profile fields and adapter capability metadata. Existing stored model-profile values are removed by an idempotent migration. The validators reject new legacy profile values with clear errors. ## What Changed - Removed model-profile types, adapter capabilities, API fields, and model selection logic. - Removed cheap-model controls from agent and task UI surfaces. - Kept status-only recovery limited to coordination context while normal continuations use the configured agent model. - Added an idempotent migration that removes stored model-profile values from agents, issues, and configuration revisions without changing issue update timestamps. - Updated tests and product documentation for the single-model behavior. ## Verification - `pnpm check:token-gates` passes. - `pnpm -r typecheck` passes. - `pnpm build` passes. - `pnpm test:run` completed with 5,607 passing tests and 8 environment-sensitive failures in unrelated fixed-port and database-deadlock suites. The same failures repeated in an isolated rerun. CI is the final clean-room result. ## Risks - This is an intentional breaking change for clients that send model-profile fields. - The migration changes legacy agent, issue, and configuration-revision JSON. It is idempotent and preserves unrelated fields and issue update timestamps. - The change is cross-cutting because the removed feature existed in adapters, shared contracts, the server, plugins, and the UI. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex with `gpt-5`. Reasoning and tool use were enabled. The runtime did not expose the context-window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [ ] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(runner): add remote execution substrate (#12638)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Paperclip Runner gives native runs a durable and governed execution path. > - The current native path runs on the control-plane host. > - Remote environments need an authenticated execution-target contract. > - The contract must not change direct adapters or enable new runtimes by default. > - This pull request adds the remote execution substrate and Daytona ingress. > - The benefit is a bounded base for later remote runner transport work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #12616. Refs #12352. **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting. This change touches runner transport, server orchestration, plugin contracts, and shared settings. **Problem or motivation** Native execution cannot resolve an authenticated runner ingress through a remote environment. The server also lacks one provider-neutral contract for remote execution targets. **Proposed solution** Add a default-off runner preview ingress capability. Add transport-neutral runner connectivity. Add remote execution target and lifecycle handling. Add a Daytona ingress implementation with redacted credentials. **Alternatives considered** A provider-specific server path would duplicate orchestration and authorization. A public endpoint without an environment contract would weaken the trust boundary. **Roadmap alignment** This work supports the Cloud and Sandbox agents milestone. It also supports self-healing runs and governed tool access. ## What Changed - Added execution-target traits for local, SSH, and sandbox environments. - Added plugin RPC contracts for runner ingress endpoints. - Added authenticated Daytona preview ingress. - Added transport-neutral PRP outbound connections. - Added remote runner artifact verification and fail-closed provider selection. - Added bounded native session resume, cancellation, and lifecycle recovery. - Preserved Codex-only selection for fresh experimental runner starts. - Preserved all direct adapter execution and finalization paths. - Removed stale Pi provider-pack requirements that security review rejected. - Kept the rollout controls off by default. - Did not change pnpm-lock.yaml, Cargo, database migrations, or GitHub workflows. ## Verification - GitHub Actions will run the repository test, typecheck, build, security, and policy gates. - Focused tests cover ingress validation, redaction, execution targets, remote lifecycle, cancellation, resume, and legacy adapter selection. - Local tests were not run. The requested verification policy uses GitHub Actions for this series. - `git diff --check origin/master...HEAD` passes. - The diff contains 52 files. ## Risks - Remote execution crosses a trust boundary. - The implementation validates target capabilities, artifact digests, provider-pack pins, and connection metadata. - The feature remains default-off. - Fresh native selection remains Codex-only. - Existing direct adapters remain on the legacy path. - This PR does not yet make remote Codex runnable. The next PR adds the Rust WSS and TLS transport. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex with GPT-5.6. The work used high-reasoning agent mode, repository tools, GitHub tools, and parallel code-audit agents. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with Fixes: / Closes / Refs OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

feat(runner): add Codex-native application integration (#12591)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The runner package is useful only when the application can start, observe, and recover a native Codex run safely. > - Existing direct adapters must keep their current execution and finalization paths. > - The application boundary therefore needs additive persistence, authorization, coordination, and recovery behind an explicit experimental adapter. > - This pull request adds that Codex-only boundary without activating generalized providers, remote environments, or the later task/SDK surfaces. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Shared contracts, database persistence, adapter utilities, server native-runtime services, and the experimental Paperclip Runner adapter. **Problem or motivation** The already-landed runner package has a qualified Codex path, but the application needs durable native-run state, guarded runtime selection, authenticated coordination, tool security, finalization, and recovery before the experimental adapter can be exercised safely. **Proposed solution** Add a Codex-only `paperclip_runner` application path behind the existing default-off native-runner setting. Bind native state and coordination to company/run identity, preserve persisted-run recovery, and leave every direct adapter on its existing legacy execution path. **Alternatives considered** The earlier stack boundary introduced a generalized executor and remote-environment lifecycle here. That made this PR depend on implementations in higher PRs and changed reusable sandbox behavior globally. Those pieces are now deferred together to #12592. **Roadmap alignment** ROADMAP.md does not list a conflicting native-runner integration project. This change adds the application boundary for the existing Runner architecture. ## What Changed - Added native run/result/finalization/provider-trace persistence, shared validators, and idempotent migration/replay coverage. - Added guarded Codex-only runtime selection, authenticated PRP coordination, recovery, finalization, and interaction services. - Added run/company-bound tool-gateway authorization, credential redaction, SSRF protections, and replay-safe behavior. - Added the explicit `paperclip_runner` adapter behind the default-off rollout setting. - Preserved legacy answered-question wake projection and direct-adapter execution/finalization paths. - Hardened cancellation so only owned in-memory child processes are signaled; persisted recycled PIDs/process groups are never trusted. - Retained the narrow Claude ACPX isolated-context security follow-up discovered after #12590. - Deferred the generalized executor, provider ingress, remote lifecycle, SDK/lab/eval work, release-process changes, and lockfile. ## Verification - Changed-file delta against `master`: 133 files. - GitHub Actions is the authoritative verification environment for this PR. - Full CI, security, and Greptile review will run on this lowest unmerged stack PR. - Local tests/build/typecheck were not run because this checkout is resource constrained. - Static diff/reference checks pass, and `pnpm-lock.yaml` is unchanged. ## Risks - This touches central heartbeat and agent-route code, so legacy compatibility is the primary risk. - Runtime selection remains Codex-only and explicit; direct Codex, Claude, OpenCode, process, HTTP, and plugin adapters remain on their existing paths. - Fresh native starts fail closed while the rollout flag is off; persisted native records remain readable and recoverable. - Cancellation, company/run binding, tool calls, status decisions, and completion writes are guarded or replay-safe. > For core feature work, check [ROADMAP.md](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in #dev before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5.6, with repository tools, code execution, and parallel agent review. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either linked existing issues or described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass — GitHub Actions is authoritative for this resource-constrained checkout - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI and security gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open actionable findings - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before merge ## Stack - Position: 3 of 5 overall; lowest of 3 currently unmerged - Base: `master` - Previous: [#12590](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/12590), qualified Claude ACPX runtime — merged - Next: [#12592](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/12592), generalized Codex executor, task experience, and developer SDKs --------- Co-authored-by: Dev Agent <dev@paperclip.ing> |

test(server): load the agent-permissions route module graph once per file (#12471)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - The server test suites verify agent permissions and route behavior > - The agent-permissions route suite rebuilt its full module graph for every test > - CPU load made that repeated work exceed the test timeout and caused intermittent failures > - This pull request loads the route module graph once for the file and resets each mock before every test > - The benefit is faster, stable test execution with the same test coverage and isolation ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** `server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts` failed intermittently in continuous integration. The suite reset modules and re-imported the route module graph for every test. Under CPU load, one import took seconds instead of milliseconds and caused an expected response to become an HTTP 500. **Expected behavior** The suite should run all 54 cases without intermittent timeout failures. Each test should keep isolated mock state. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Run `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts`. 2. Repeat the file run under high CPU load. 3. Compare the failure rate and run time before and after this change. **Paperclip version or commit** `c4d1af4216f174a92823ca3a20e0717c54371dd5` **Deployment mode** Built from source. **Installation method** Built from source with pnpm. **Agent adapter(s) involved** Not adapter-specific. This change affects a server test suite. **Database mode** Not database-related. ## What Changed - Load the route module graph one time for the describe block with the existing `hoistModuleGraph` helper. - Make `createApp` synchronous and read the hoisted graph. - Remove per-test `vi.resetModules()` and the 26 `vi.doUnmock(...)` calls. - Keep stable mock objects and reset each route-facing mock before every test. - Keep all 44 `it` blocks and 54 parameterized cases. ## Verification - `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts` passes and reports 54 tests. - `npx tsc --noEmit -p server/tsconfig.json` passes with 0 errors. - Under 32 concurrent CPU-bound loops, the file passed 15 of 15 runs after this change, with 54 of 54 cases on each run. - The same test failed 1 of 15 runs before this change. - Per-run wall-clock time changed from about 29–34 seconds to about 8–10 seconds. ## Risks - Low risk. The change affects test setup only. - The hoisted mock objects keep stable identity, and `beforeEach` resets every route-facing mock. - The registration step arms no mock implementations, and the test adapter still unregisters in a `finally` block. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5. The runtime provided tool use and code execution. The runtime did not provide a context window value. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: Claude login on the new-agent page before agent creation (#11347)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - The Claude local adapter supports subscription login through a sandbox > - The new-agent page must show login before the user creates an agent > - Test results must not expose raw sandbox diagnostics or secret values > - This pull request adds the login UI to both Test lanes and closes the diagnostic boundary > - The branch also adds durable cleanup recovery for failed sandbox teardown > - Reusable sandboxes must retain both their recorded teardown configuration and a valid lifecycle path until destruction succeeds > - The benefit is a usable login flow with fixed public checks, redacted server logs, and recoverable sandbox cleanup ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Related public work: [#9488](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/9488) adds first-class recognition for `CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN` in headless and remote runs. Related public issue: [#2681](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/issues/2681) requests Claude Code subscription support. This pull request adds the login transport and new-agent UI flow that those changes do not provide. **Subsystem affected:** Claude local adapter, server login probes, sandbox provider setup, cleanup recovery, and the new-agent UI. **Problem or motivation:** The Test lanes did not show the sandbox login panel in all supported cases. Test results also exposed raw probe diagnostics, and JSON escapes could end secret redaction early. **Proposed solution:** Surface the login capability through the bundled provider manifest. Prepare the same probe runtime in the ACP lane. Send diagnostics only to redacted server logs. Keep Test checks on fixed public messages. Normalize login URL hints to allowlisted HTTPS Claude and Anthropic hosts. Consume JSON escapes during redaction. Preserve failed sandbox cleanup state across retries and restarts, and prevent deletion from severing the lifecycle context of a live reusable sandbox. **Alternatives considered:** Keep raw diagnostics in Test checks or trust login URL text from the sandbox. Both choices increase information exposure. Keep separate probe behavior in the ACP lane. That choice would leave the two Test lanes inconsistent. ## What Changed - Surface the sandbox login panel on both Test lanes. - Reconcile the bundled Daytona plugin manifest so `supportsSetupTokenLogin` reaches the UI capability gate. - Prepare the ACP Test lane with the same probe runtime as the CLI Test lane. - Add the `claude_acp_login_probe_unavailable` warning when the ACP probe cannot run. - Send raw sandbox diagnostics only to redacted server logs. - Keep Test checks on fixed public messages in the ACP, managed-config, and CLI paths. - Normalize login URL hints to allowlisted HTTPS Claude and Anthropic hosts. - Redact JSON and escaped-JSON secret values, including escaped quotes and backslashes. - Preserve orphan cleanup records across provider failures, restarts, and unavailable plugins. - Atomically block environment deletion while a live reusable sandbox lease still depends on it. - Verify pending cleanup destroys plugin sandboxes with the provider configuration recorded on the lease, even after the current environment configuration changes. ## Verification - Head under review: `506b7fa2d83c36bfa5fd722ee9d95b0c7431c241`. - Focused environment route/service/runtime coverage passes: 196 tests across 3 files. - `pnpm -r typecheck` passes. - `pnpm build` passes. - The full Vitest run completed with 4,754 passing and 28 failing tests. All 23 source-test failures reproduce unchanged on parent head `58cfe61a33191ce03d965d65085d26064b4888ba`; the other 5 are duplicate executions from stale `server/dist` output. The failures are unrelated macOS path/listener and scheduler-fixture failures, so there is no new bad commit for bisect to localize. - All required CI checks pass for the current head, including build, typecheck/release registry, all server and workspace shards, serialized server suites, canary, and e2e. - A fresh Greptile review for `506b7fa2d83c36bfa5fd722ee9d95b0c7431c241` reports 5/5, “safe to merge,” with no blocking failure remaining. ## Risks - A probe or redaction change could hide useful server diagnostics. - An allowlist change could reject a valid Claude login URL. - Cleanup recovery changes could affect provider teardown ordering. - An environment with a live reusable sandbox can no longer be deleted until the owning issue or execution workspace completes teardown. - The implementation keeps public Test messages fixed and sends detail to redacted server logs. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 via Codex — exact model ID: GPT-5; tool use and code execution enabled; extended reasoning enabled. The implementation author used AI-assisted development. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs: #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and documented the result - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation or confirmed no separate documentation change is needed - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(agents): disable cheap model profiles by default (#10019)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the control plane people use to create and govern
AI-agent companies
> - Agent creation persists runtime configuration that controls which
model profiles future runs may select
> - Adapters can expose a `cheap` profile, and existing creation paths
implicitly left that profile available when operators made no choice
> - That made a newly created agent eligible for a lower-cost model
without an explicit operator opt-in
> - The UI also dropped an explicit opt-in when the operator selected
the adapter's default cheap model rather than a custom model ID
> - Codex additionally hardcoded `gpt-5.3-codex-spark` into its cheap
profile and static fallback model list, making Paperclip choose an
auth-dependent model rather than requiring an operator choice
> - This pull request makes new-agent creation disable an available
cheap profile by default while preserving explicit opt-in from the UI or
API
> - The Codex cheap profile now remains available for explicit
configuration but supplies no model default, so an unconfigured cheap
request stays on the primary model
> - The benefit is predictable model quality for new agents and an
intentional, auditable choice before lower-cost routing is enabled
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
**Problem**
New agents created with an adapter that exposes a `cheap` model profile
can inherit that profile without the operator explicitly enabling it. In
the UI, enabling the adapter-default cheap model is also omitted because
runtime configuration is only written when a custom model ID is present.
**Expected behavior**
- New agents default an available `cheap` model profile to `{ enabled:
false }` when the caller does not specify it.
- Explicit API configuration remains authoritative.
- UI opt-in persists even when the adapter default model is used.
- Codex does not advertise or automatically select
`gpt-5.3-codex-spark`; operators must explicitly configure any
lower-cost Codex model.
**Related public work**
- Refs #4881, which introduced cheap model profiles for local adapters.
- Supersedes the default-selection portions of #8032 and #10004 by
removing the Codex model default instead of replacing it with another
hardcoded model.
## What Changed
- Detect whether the selected adapter exposes a `cheap` model profile
during agent creation and hiring.
- Persist `runtimeConfig.modelProfiles.cheap.enabled = false` only when
the caller did not explicitly configure the profile.
- Preserve UI cheap-profile opt-in when using the adapter's default
model by writing an empty adapter config.
- Remove `gpt-5.3-codex-spark` from the Codex static model list.
- Keep the Codex `cheap` profile explicitly configurable while giving it
an empty adapter config, so Paperclip never chooses a cheap Codex model
automatically.
- Verify that a Codex cheap request without an explicit model leaves the
primary model unchanged.
- Extend server route and UI runtime-config tests for default-disable
and explicit-opt-in behavior.
## Verification
- `env -u PAPERCLIP_IN_WORKTREE -u PAPERCLIP_WORKTREE_NAME -u
PAPERCLIP_CONFIG -u PAPERCLIP_HOME -u PAPERCLIP_INSTANCE_ID -u
PAPERCLIP_CONTEXT pnpm exec vitest run
packages/adapters/codex-local/src/index.test.ts
packages/adapters/codex-local/src/server/codex-args.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/adapter-models.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/adapter-registry.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-model-profile.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts
ui/src/lib/new-agent-runtime-config.test.ts`
- Result: 7 test files passed, 105 tests passed.
- GitHub `Typecheck + Release Registry` check passed on the final head.
- `git diff --check public-gh/master...HEAD`
## Risks
- Low behavioral risk: only newly created or hired agents are
normalized; existing agents are unchanged.
- Explicit `cheap` profile settings remain untouched, including explicit
opt-in.
- Codex users who explicitly opt into the cheap lane must choose a
model; requests without a configured override intentionally continue on
the primary model.
- Adapter profile discovery is now awaited during creation, adding a
small amount of adapter metadata lookup work.
- The source branch name is automation-provided and retained as required
by the task, so it does not satisfy the preferred public branch naming
convention.

security(server): close cross-tenant existence oracle (404 instead of 403) (#3967)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - In a multi-tenant deployment, route handlers that take a resource id (`issue`, `goal`, `project`, `approval`, etc.) look the resource up by id and then call `assertCompanyAccess` on its `companyId` — 404 if it doesn't exist, 403 if it exists in another tenant > - The split status codes are a classic *existence oracle*: any authenticated user can enumerate ids across tenants by probing for the 403/404 boundary, mapping out which issues, labels, approvals, etc. exist in other customers' tenants even when they cannot read the contents > - The right fix is a single uniform 404 for both "not found" and "found but cross-tenant", which collapses the oracle but still preserves write-path checks (active membership, viewer-readonly) for *authorized* tenants > - This pull request adds a non-throwing `hasCompanyAccess(req, companyId)` helper plus a `getAccessibleResource` wrapper that ~130 handlers across 14 route files now use, folding the access check into the existence check while still running `assertCompanyAccess` for authorized tenants so viewer-readonly / inactive-membership rejections fire unchanged on write paths > - The benefit is closing a multi-tenant information leak without breaking write-path security or single-tenant local-first behavior ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #709 — asks for company-scope regression coverage across approval/activity/access routes, because a subtle route refactor could leak cross-tenant data; this PR hardens exactly those surfaces (uniform 404 across 14 route files including `approvals`, `activity`, `secrets`) and updates cross-tenant expectations in test files. It does not add the full coverage matrix #709 asks for — hence Refs, not Closes. No existing issue covers the oracle itself — described in-PR: - Route handlers returned 404 for "not found" but 403 for "exists in another tenant", a classic *existence oracle*: any authenticated user could enumerate ids across tenants by probing the 403/404 boundary. - That maps out which issues, labels, approvals, etc. exist in other customers' tenants even when their contents are unreadable. - Fix: a uniform 404 for both cases, while keeping write-path checks (active membership, viewer-readonly) for authorized tenants. ## What Changed - **`server/src/routes/authz.ts`** — new `hasCompanyAccess(req, companyId): boolean` helper alongside the existing `assertCompanyAccess`. Docstring spells out the two-step pattern (404 gate, then `assertCompanyAccess` for write-path checks). The helper mirrors `assertCompanyAccess`'s company-scope semantics exactly — in particular, signed-in instance admins do **not** get blanket access to companies they are not a member of (the repo's `authz-company-access` tests pin that behavior for `assertCompanyAccess`; an earlier draft of the helper accidentally widened it for reads). - **`getAccessibleResource(req, res, lookup, notFoundMessage)`** — the safe thing is now the easy thing. One helper wraps the whole pattern (uniform 404 for missing/cross-tenant, then `assertCompanyAccess` for write-path membership checks) and ~130 handlers across 14 route files use it: ```ts const goal = await getAccessibleResource(req, res, svc.getById(id), "Goal not found"); if (!goal) return; ``` Files: `activity`, `agents`, `approvals`, `assets`, `costs`, `environments`, `execution-workspaces`, `file-resources`, `goals`, `issue-tree-control`, `issues`, `projects`, `routines`, `secrets`. Handlers with bespoke not-found behavior (the legacy `200 []` contract, audit-logged denials in `file-resources`, null-returning authz helpers) compose `hasCompanyAccess` directly using the documented two-step pattern: ```ts // step 1: close the oracle (uniform 404 for both not-found and cross-tenant) if (!existing || !hasCompanyAccess(req, existing.companyId)) { res.status(404).json({ error: "Goal not found" }); return; } // step 2: enforce write-path membership checks for authorised tenants (no-op on GET) assertCompanyAccess(req, existing.companyId); ``` Routes where `companyId` comes from *request input* (`req.params.companyId`, `req.body.companyId`, e.g. in `companies.ts` and `plugins.ts`) deliberately retain plain `assertCompanyAccess` — there's no existence oracle to close because the companyId is an input, not a discovered value. - **Full-sweep coverage** — a scripted audit of every `assertCompanyAccess(req, <resource>.companyId)` call site in `server/src/routes/` found ~55 lookup-then-assert pairs the first pass missed; all are now gated. Notable ones: the `/secret-provider-configs/:id` CRUD routes, the agents instructions-bundle/config-revision/skills-sync routes (which check access via the `assertCanUpdateAgent` / `assertCanReadAgent` / `assertCanManageInstructionsPath` helpers), `POST /heartbeat-runs/:runId/watchdog-decisions`, `GET /issues/:id/cost-summary`, the environment + environment-lease GET routes, all six issue-tree-control routes, ~24 issue sub-resource routes (document annotations, interactions, approvals links, recovery actions, plan decompositions, lock/unlock), and the three workspace file-resource routes (these throw `notFound` instead of `forbidden` inside their audit-logging wrappers, so denied attempts are still activity-logged server-side while the client sees a uniform 404). - **Helpers made self-defending** — `assertCanUpdateAgent` / `assertCanReadAgent` / `assertCanManageInstructionsPath` (agents) and `assertCanManage{Project,Execution}WorkspaceRuntimeServices` throw `notFound` for cross-tenant resources before their `assertCompanyAccess` step, so a future caller that forgets the route-level gate still can't reopen the oracle. - **Pattern enforcement** — new `authz-existence-oracle-guard.test.ts` statically scans `server/src/routes/*.ts` and fails CI on any `assertCompanyAccess(req, <resource>.companyId)` call that is not preceded by a `hasCompanyAccess` gate, with an explicit allowlist (plus staleness check) for the request-input cases. New routes that regress to the 403/404 split fail the suite with a message pointing at the documented pattern. - **Tests** — cross-tenant expectations updated from 403→404 where routes are now gated; new `hasCompanyAccess` unit tests in `authz-company-access.test.ts` pin the instance-admin/local-implicit/agent/none semantics in lockstep with `assertCompanyAccess`; `write-path-membership.test.ts` (added in an earlier round) confirms viewer/inactive users are still rejected on writes. - **One legacy-contract preserve** — `GET /heartbeat-runs/:runId/issues` still returns `200 []` for both "doesn't exist" and "cross-tenant" so the legacy contract is preserved while the oracle stays closed. ## Verification - `pnpm run typecheck` — PASS. - `pnpm -F @paperclipai/server exec vitest run` — full server suite green locally apart from 4 pre-existing local-environment failures (`paperclip-skill-utils` ×2 and `workspace-runtime` ×1 are cwd/git-environment dependent — verified identical on a clean checkout of the base; `heartbeat-process-recovery` is the known macOS flake). - The new `authz-existence-oracle-guard` test sweeps `server/src/routes/*.ts` and confirms no remaining `assertCompanyAccess(resource.companyId)` site without a `hasCompanyAccess` gate; the only allowlisted holdouts take `companyId` from request input. ## Risks - **API contract narrowing.** Any client that specifically checked for `403` on cross-tenant access now sees `404`. This is a strict narrowing (one status instead of two for the same negative outcome) and matches what a client should expect for any id it can't access. - **Write-path checks preserved.** `assertCompanyAccess` still runs after the 404 gate on write routes, so viewer-readonly / inactive-membership rejections fire unchanged for legitimate users. - **Instance-admin scope unchanged.** `hasCompanyAccess` denies signed-in instance admins without an explicit membership, exactly like `assertCompanyAccess` (pinned by unit tests) — so the gate introduces no new read access for admins. - **Single-tenant local-first deploys** behave identically — the helper short-circuits to `true` for `local_implicit` sessions. - No new env vars, no deployment-mode switch. ## Model Used Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context), extended thinking mode; completeness sweep + instance-admin parity fix by Claude Fable 5 (1M context). ## Checklist - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] Thinking path traces from project context to this change - [x] Model used specified - [x] Checked ROADMAP.md — part of the multi-tenant hardening initiative - [x] Tests run locally and pass - [x] Added/updated cross-tenant 404 expectations across test files - [x] No UI changes - [x] Documented risks above - [x] Will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before merge Part of the multi-tenant hardening initiative — see also #5864 (per-company JWT keys) and #5865 (plugin tables `company_id`). --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

[codex] Add built-in agents and Reflection Coach bundle (#9206)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Operators need first-party agent capabilities for repeatable company work, not just manually created one-off agents. > - Built-in agents need to behave like normal company-scoped agents while preserving approval gates, permissions, budgets, and audit trails. > - Reflection and coaching work also needs bundled instructions, skill content, and a routine so the feature can be installed and reset predictably. > - The API, database, UI, portability, and tests all need to agree on the built-in lifecycle from not provisioned through setup, approval, ready, paused, and reset. > - This pull request adds built-in agent provisioning and the Reflection Coach bundle end-to-end. > - The benefit is a safer first-party path for Paperclip-managed agents without bypassing the same governance model used for operator-created agents. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue was found for this exact built-in agent and Reflection Coach bundle work. Problem/motivation: - Paperclip did not have a first-party built-in agent lifecycle for product-owned agents. - Bundled agent resources such as default instructions, skills, and routines needed managed ownership and reset semantics. - Approval-gated companies needed built-in setup to preserve requested adapter, budget, manager, and permission state through board approval. - The board UI needed clear built-in badges, setup affordances, readiness state, and bundle status without exposing secrets. Proposed solution: - Add a company-scoped built-in agent registry, provisioning/reset/reconcile/status APIs, and Reflection Coach bundled resources. - Track bundled managed resources in the database with idempotent migration behavior. - Reuse existing agent approval, authorization, budget, and activity-log paths instead of creating a bypass. - Add UI setup, badges, gates, bundle panels, and route coverage for built-in agents. Duplicate search: - Searched GitHub PRs for `built-in agents Reflection Coach repo:paperclipai/paperclip`; only this PR was returned. - Searched GitHub issues for the same query; no public issues were returned. ## What Changed - Added built-in agent definitions, lifecycle state derivation, provisioning, reset, reconcile, status, and routine-control routes. - Added the `built_in_managed_resources` migration and schema exports for bundled instructions, skill, and routine ownership. - Added the Reflection Coach built-in bundle with default instructions, skill catalog content, routine template, default permissions, and managed-resource drift handling. - Added approval-aware provisioning behavior that preserves requested adapter config, budgets, manager assignment, and built-in permissions through hire approval. - Added authorization and mutation gates for built-in agent and skill changes, including consented Reflection Coach change paths. - Added UI surfaces for built-in agent setup, roster/detail badges, readiness gates, bundle status, routine controls, and route filtering. - Added company import/export and validator coverage for built-in managed resources and low-trust/red-team presets. - Addressed Greptile follow-ups for pending approval reconciliation, consent-gate error propagation, config-read authorization fallback, approval-path manager preservation, and non-model adapter provisioning. ## Verification Local verification: - `git diff --check public/master..HEAD` passed. - `pnpm check:token-gates` passed with all gates clean. - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/components/ConfigureBuiltInAgentModal.test.tsx` passed: 1 file, 4 tests. - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/components/EntityRow.test.tsx ui/src/pages/Agents.test.tsx ui/src/components/BuiltInAgentGate.test.tsx ui/src/components/ConfigureBuiltInAgentModal.test.tsx ui/src/components/BuiltInBundlePanel.test.tsx ui/src/pages/InstanceExperimentalSettings.test.tsx ui/src/pages/Routines.test.tsx` passed: 7 files, 64 tests. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/built-in-agents.test.ts src/__tests__/authorization-service.test.ts src/__tests__/company-skills-routes.test.ts` passed: 3 files, 91 tests. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db check:migrations` passed. - `pnpm -r typecheck` passed after the rebase; `pnpm --filter ui typecheck` passed after the final UI review fix. Remote verification on latest head `1c61f693a4ec881d739022b0e75a8ca8bf8c2cd8`: - Merge state: `CLEAN`. - Greptile: `5/5`, zero unresolved Greptile threads. - PR check rollup: all checks successful, neutral, or skipped as expected. - Passing gates include Build, Typecheck + Release Registry, all server shards, all workspace shards, all serialized server suites, e2e, Canary Dry Run, policy, review, verify, Socket, Superagent, and Snyk. ## Risks - This adds a new managed-resource table and migration; the migration uses idempotent create/add/index guards and passed migration safety checks. - Built-in agent provisioning touches approval and authorization paths; tests cover pending approval preservation, stale retry rejection, consent gates, and config-read fallback behavior. - Reflection Coach creates managed instructions, skill, and routine resources; drift/reset behavior is covered by service tests and redacted API responses. - Non-model adapter setup now provisions a `needs_setup` built-in row before command/endpoint fields are complete; this matches the server lifecycle and is covered by the setup modal regression test. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex coding agent based on GPT-5. Exact hosted model ID, context-window size, and reasoning-mode labels are not exposed in this runtime; tool use, shell execution, GitHub CLI/API access, and local code editing were enabled.

[codex] Add built-in Hermes adapters (#8543)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Agent adapters are the boundary between the control plane and the runtimes that actually do work. > - Hermes support needs to be available as first-class local and gateway adapters while still preserving the adapter-manager override path for external packages. > - The adapter work touches runtime execution, UI adapter metadata, onboarding prompts, scoped credentials, release packaging, and smoke coverage, so the handoff needs concrete verification rather than only unit tests. > - This pull request adds built-in Hermes local and Hermes gateway support, keeps external adapter overrides compatible, and documents/tests the gateway flow end to end. > - The benefit is that operators can hire Hermes-backed agents without a manual plugin install, while self-hosted installs can still override/shadow the built-ins through Adapter manager packages. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this exact Hermes built-in adapter, gateway onboarding, and release-source work. Problem description: - Hermes local and gateway adapters need a public, reviewable source path in the monorepo so package artifacts and built-in adapter behavior match the application source. - Operators need built-in `hermes_local` and `hermes_gateway` adapter choices without losing the ability to install external Hermes packages as overrides. - Gateway onboarding needs secure defaults for API server URLs, API keys, and generated agent setup text. - Hermes-originated task bridge credentials need narrower API-key scope configuration. - Related public PRs found during duplicate search include #3027, #2363, #7544, #7950, #8095, and #8543. ## What Changed - Added the unified Hermes adapter package with local and gateway server/UI/CLI exports, config schemas, transcript parsing, model detection, and package metadata. - Registered `hermes_local` and `hermes_gateway` as built-in adapters across shared constants, server registries, CLI packaging, and UI adapter registries. - Kept the external adapter override path compatible so installed Hermes packages can shadow built-ins and restore the built-in parser when disabled. - Added Hermes gateway onboarding docs, board-operator docs, Docker smoke assets, and shell smoke harnesses for join/e2e validation. - Added scoped task-bridge API-key support, authorization checks, issue-origin handling, and tests for Hermes-created Paperclip tasks. - Hardened gateway transport and redaction behavior for API keys, headers, session data, and smoke diagnostics. - Updated release packaging/bootstrap checks for the Hermes packages while leaving `pnpm-lock.yaml` out of the PR per repository policy. ## Verification Targeted local verification recorded before PR handoff: - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/hermes-paperclip-adapter exec vitest run src/gateway/server/execute.test.ts` — 14/14 passed. - `pnpm test:hermes-gateway-smoke` — 6/6 passed. - Hermes package typecheck/build checks passed. - Focused server/UI adapter tests passed — 31/31. - Release helper Node tests passed — 18/18. - `git diff --check origin/master..HEAD` passed. Fresh Docker E2E smoke evidence: - Ran `pnpm smoke:hermes-gateway-e2e` on 2026-06-26 with a fresh state directory and fresh Docker container against a live Paperclip dev server. - Hermes direct execution reached `completed`. - Hermes stop/cancel path reached `cancelled`. - Hermes gateway created a Paperclip task, Paperclip ran the Hermes agent, and the task reached `done` with the expected marker response. - Temporary board auth keys, token files, smoke state, and Docker containers were cleaned up after the run. PR checks on head `b5eae40ce`: - GitHub Actions passed: `policy`, `review`, `Typecheck + Release Registry`, all general test shards, all serialized server shards, `Build`, `Canary Dry Run`, `e2e`, and aggregate `verify`. - External checks passed: Snyk and Socket Project Report. - External Socket Pull Request Alerts remained pending after the first-party CI matrix completed. ## Risks - Medium risk: this spans adapter registration, package publishing, gateway execution, onboarding docs, API-key scoping, and UI adapter metadata. - Migration risk is low: the scope-config migration adds a nullable column and does not rewrite existing keys. - Gateway execution depends on operator-provided Hermes API configuration; the smoke covers the Docker gateway path but real deployments may differ by network/auth setup. - Direct Greptile review on the latest expanded diff is file-count limited, although the commitperclip review gate passed. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5 coding agent, tool use enabled in a local repository workspace. Context window size is not exposed in this environment. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Commitperclip review gate is green; direct Greptile review is file-count limited on the latest expanded diff - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Agents and board users operate inside a company-scoped control plane where permissions decide which mutating actions they can perform > - Company skills are part of the reusable agent-company setup surface, but skill mutation had been coupled to broader agent-creation authority > - That coupling meant importing or managing skills required a permission that also implies hiring power, which is broader than the operation needs > - Paperclip already has a grant-based permission vocabulary, so skill mutation should be authorized through a dedicated `skills:create` capability while preserving existing default behavior for trusted agents > - This pull request adds the skill creation permission contract, enforces it on company skill mutations, exposes it in agent permission management, and documents the changed CLI/API expectations > - The benefit is a narrower, auditable permission path for skill import/create/update/delete flows without forcing agents to receive broader agent-creation authority ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public issue is linked. Problem: company skill mutation APIs were effectively tied to broader agent creation authority. This PR splits skill mutation authorization onto the public `skills:create` permission while keeping existing default skill creation behavior for agents unless explicitly disabled. Related public PR found during duplicate search: #5330. That PR uses an older `canManageSkills` shape; this PR implements the `skills:create` grant path instead. ## What Changed - Added `skills:create` to shared permission constants and agent permission types/validators as `canCreateSkills`. - Backfilled default human/member role grants for `skills:create`. - Updated company skill mutation routes to require board/user or agent access to `skills:create`, while preserving legacy/default agent behavior through `canCreateSkills` unless explicitly disabled. - Updated agent permission update handling, UI permission controls, duplicate-agent payloads, plugin SDK fixtures, and agent detail API surfaces for `canCreateSkills`. - Added regression coverage for skill route authorization, permission schema/default behavior, invite grants, omitted permission updates, and duplicate-agent payloads. - Updated CLI and Paperclip skill documentation for the new skill creation permission. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-skills-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/invite-join-grants.test.ts ui/src/lib/duplicate-agent-payload.test.ts` — 5 files, 90 tests passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/shared typecheck && pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck && pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` — passed. - `pnpm test:run ...changed files...` was attempted first, but the stable wrapper rejects explicit file arguments; direct Vitest was used for the same targeted files. ## Risks - Moderate authorization risk: this changes the gate for company skill mutations, so the tests cover board grant checks, agent explicit grant checks, legacy default allowance, and explicit denial. - Migration/backfill risk is low: the migration only grants `skills:create` to existing human roles that already need broad management capability. - UI/API compatibility risk is low: `canCreateSkills` remains default-on for full agent permissions, and the update validator preserves omitted values so unrelated permission edits do not re-enable disabled skill creation. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. [codex] Harden same-company CEO authorization (#8276)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Companies are the primary tenant boundary for agents, board users, settings, and portability operations. > - CEO agents need limited same-company management powers, but those powers must not cross into another company. > - The affected company routes mixed route-level access checks with validation middleware and repeated CEO checks, which left adjacent mutation and portability surfaces easy to drift. > - This pull request centralizes same-company CEO-or-board authorization for those company-scoped surfaces. > - It also adds regression coverage proving a CEO agent from one company cannot read, mutate, archive, delete, export, or import against another company. > - The benefit is tighter company isolation without removing legitimate same-company CEO operations. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Internal task: PAP-11205 / PAP-11347. Bug report: - What happened: same-company CEO authorization for company settings, branding, and portability routes was implemented per-route, making it possible for adjacent surfaces to drift and risking company-boundary mistakes. - Expected behavior: an agent API key must only manage the company that owns the authenticated agent, and only CEO agents should get the limited same-company management permissions. - Steps to reproduce: authenticate as a CEO agent from Company A and call Company B company routes such as `PATCH /api/companies/:companyId`, `PATCH /api/companies/:companyId/branding`, export/preview export, safe import preview/apply, archive, delete, or read. - Version/commit: fixed on this branch at `45edaccb8` on top of `public/master` `ddc193c2b`. - Deployment mode: server API behavior; no UI change. Related search results reviewed, not duplicates of this exact route hardening: - Refs #2212 - Refs #1083 - Refs #8053 ## What Changed - Added a shared `assertSameCompanyCeoAgentOrBoard` company route guard and reused it for company settings, branding, export, and safe import endpoints. - Moved request parsing after authorization on sensitive company mutation/export/import routes so unauthorized cross-company callers are rejected before route body validation side effects or service calls. - Tightened archive and delete ordering to assert route company access before board-only mutation authorization. - Added a cross-company company-route authorization regression suite covering read, settings, branding, archive, delete, export, export preview, import preview, and import apply paths. - Extended adjacent route/service tests to prove non-CEO and cross-company agent keys are rejected on the relevant company-scoped surfaces. - Addressed Greptile follow-ups by removing a redundant board assertion and inlining the portability authorization wrapper. ## Verification Local focused verification on rebased head `45edaccb8`: - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/companies-route-cross-company-authz.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-branding-route.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-portability-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/authorization-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/openclaw-invite-prompt-route.test.ts` - 6 test files passed - 127 tests passed Remote PR checks on rebased head `45edaccb8`: - Paperclip PR workflow: green, including policy, typecheck, build, e2e, canary dry run, workspace tests, server general tests, and all serialized server shards. - Greptile Review: success with 5/5 confidence on `45edaccb8`. - Greptile review threads: all resolved. ## Risks Low to moderate risk. This intentionally tightens company route authorization and changes whether some unauthorized requests fail at the authz layer before schema validation. Legitimate board users and same-company CEO agents remain covered by tests, but callers that depended on validation errors from unauthorized company routes will now receive authorization errors first. No migrations. No `pnpm-lock.yaml` changes. No `.github/workflows` changes. No screenshots or design images added. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. refactor(environments): make execution environments instance-scoped (#8375)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the control plane for AI-agent companies, so execution environment selection has to stay inspectable and predictable across companies, agents, and runs. > - The environment subsystem decides where an agent heartbeat actually runs and how remote sandbox state is realized and restored. > - That subsystem previously mixed company-scoped environment catalogs with issue-level environment stamping, so a reassigned issue could keep executing in the previous assignee's sandbox. > - That behavior breaks the control-plane contract: changing the assignee should change the executing agent/environment path unless there is an explicit current override. > - Fixing it cleanly required more than a narrow patch; the environment model had to move to instance scope with a single inherited default and per-agent override semantics. > - This pull request rewires the schema, server/API surface, runtime resolution, and UI around that model, then adds regression coverage for cross-company inheritance and per-agent isolation. > - The benefit is that environment choice now follows the approved instance/agent configuration path instead of stale issue state, while shared environments only need to be configured once per instance. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description - No directly matching public GitHub issue or PR was found while searching for this refactor. ### What happened? Reassigning work between agents with different execution environments could keep running in the previous sandbox because environment choice was stamped onto the issue and outranked the current assignee. The same subsystem also forced environment catalogs to be duplicated per company even though the underlying execution environments were instance-wide resources. ### Expected behavior Execution should resolve through the current instance and agent configuration path, with one instance-scoped environment catalog, one instance default, optional per-agent override, and no stale issue-level environment authority surviving reassignment. ### Steps to reproduce 1. Configure two agents to use different execution environments. 2. Assign an issue to the first agent so the issue records execution state in that environment. 3. Reassign the same issue to the second agent and run another heartbeat. 4. Observe that the pre-fix runtime can still sync or execute in the original sandbox instead of the second agent's environment. ### Paperclip version or commit Current `master` before this PR. ### Deployment mode Self-hosted server. ### Installation method Built from source (`pnpm dev` / `pnpm build`). ### Agent adapter(s) involved - Claude Code - Not adapter-specific (core bug in environment authority / resolution) ### Database mode External Postgres. ### Access context Both board reassignment and agent heartbeats were involved. ## What Changed - Moved environments and their default selection contract to instance scope in DB/shared types, including the migration that dedupes legacy per-company environments and seeds the instance local default. - Reworked environment CRUD/auth flows to use instance-scoped APIs and added route/service coverage for instance-level environment management. - Changed runtime resolution to prefer `agent default -> instance default -> built-in local`, removed issue-level environment stamping from the active execution path, and isolated sandbox/plugin leases by `(executionWorkspaceId, agentId)`. - Added environment env-var runtime precedence so environment-provided values act as the baseline for agent execution. - Moved the environment UI into instance settings and updated agent configuration surfaces to reflect inherit/override behavior. - Added regression coverage for instance-default inheritance across companies and for the new runtime resolution behavior. - Fixed a rebase-only duplicate `enableTaskWatchdogs` flag regression in instance settings types/validators/services so the branch typechecks cleanly on current `master`. - Updated stale server tests so CI matches the shipped instance-scoped environment contract. ## Verification - `git diff --check` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/shared typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db typecheck` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/environment-runtime-driver-contract.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/environment-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/environment-instance-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/execution-workspace-policy.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-plugin-environment.test.ts server/src/__tests__/instance-settings-routes.test.ts` ## Risks - The migration changes environment scope and dedupes existing rows, so installs with unusual legacy environment combinations should be reviewed carefully during upgrade. - Remote execution behavior now depends on instance-default inheritance semantics instead of issue-level stamping, so any remaining code paths that still assume issue-scoped environment authority would surface as follow-up bugs. - This PR includes both server/runtime behavior and UI relocation, so reviewers should watch for authorization edge cases around instance settings and environment management. > I checked [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md). This work fits the existing Cloud / Sandbox agents direction as a bug-fix/refactor to current behavior, not a new parallel product surface. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex coding agent in this Paperclip/Codex session; GPT-5-class tool-using model with code execution and shell access. The exact backend model ID is not exposed to the session runtime. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

fix(agents): clear inbox hire approval when approving/terminating from detail page (#8340)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Hiring a new agent creates a `hire_agent` approval record; until it is resolved, the agent sits in `pending_approval` and the open approval surfaces an "Approve/Reject" card in the inbox > - There are two places to act on that hire: the inbox approval card and the agent detail page's Approve/Terminate buttons > - The agent detail page only flipped the agent to `idle` via `activatePendingApproval`, never resolving the linked approval record > - So after approving (or terminating) from the detail page, the approval stayed `pending` and the inbox kept showing a stale "Approve/Reject" card for an agent that was already decided > - This pull request routes the detail-page approve through the shared `approvalsSvc.approve()` (which resolves the approval and runs activation, budget policy, and the hire-approved notification), and rejects the linked approval when a still-pending agent is terminated > - The benefit is a single source of truth: deciding a hire in one place clears it everywhere, so the inbox no longer asks you to approve an agent you already approved ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this; describing in-PR (bug report). **What happened:** Create a new agent, then approve it from the agent detail page. The agent activates, but the inbox still shows a "Hire Agent" item with Approve/Reject buttons for it. **Expected:** Once a hire is approved or rejected anywhere in the UI, it should be resolved everywhere — the inbox should not re-ask you to approve an agent that is already decided. **Root cause:** `POST /agents/:id/approve` called `activatePendingApproval`, which only changes the agent's status. The linked `hire_agent` approval row stayed `pending`. The inbox lists approvals filtered to unresolved statuses, so the card persisted. Terminating a pending agent from the detail page had the mirror problem for the "reject" half. Related (not duplicates): #215 (join-request inbox badge), #1815 (approval detail button loading text). ## What Changed - Added `approvalService.findOpenHireApprovalForAgent(companyId, agentId)` to locate the open `hire_agent` approval for an agent. The company/type/open-status **and** `payload->>'agentId'` predicates all run in SQL (jsonb operator), so the DB returns only the relevant row instead of filtering in JS (`server/src/services/approvals.ts`). - `POST /agents/:id/approve` resolves the linked approval through the shared `approvalsSvc.approve()` — running activation, budget-policy upsert, and the hire-approved notification as one path — and falls back to direct `activatePendingApproval` only when no open approval exists (legacy agents created before approvals were tracked) (`server/src/routes/agents.ts`). - `POST /agents/:id/terminate` now branches the same way: when a still-`pending_approval` agent has an open hire approval, it delegates to `approvalsSvc.reject()` (which resolves the approval **and** terminates the agent internally) and re-reads the agent, otherwise it terminates directly. This avoids terminating the agent twice (`reject()` already calls `agentsSvc.terminate()`) (`server/src/routes/agents.ts`). - The `agent.approved` activity log records the resolved `approvalId` (or `null` on the fallback path) for traceability. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` — clean. - Targeted server tests pass (57 tests): `npx vitest run src/__tests__/approvals-service.test.ts src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts` - `findOpenHireApprovalForAgent` returns the row the SQL filter yields / returns null when none matches. - Approving from the detail page resolves the linked approval via `approvalsSvc.approve()` and does not double-activate; legacy fallback still calls `activatePendingApproval`. - Terminating a still-pending agent with an open approval calls `approvalsSvc.reject()` and does **not** call `agentsSvc.terminate()` a second time; terminating with no open approval terminates directly. - Manual: create an agent → inbox shows the hire card → approve from the agent detail page → inbox card is gone and the agent is active. Same for terminate-while-pending clearing the card. ## Risks Low risk, server-only, no schema or migration changes. The fallback to `activatePendingApproval` preserves existing behavior for agents with no tracked approval record, so legacy agents still activate. The shared approval path is the same one the inbox card already uses, so approve/terminate-from-detail-page now match approve/reject-from-inbox exactly. ## Model Used Claude Opus 4.8 (claude-opus-4-8), extended thinking with tool use, via Claude Code. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots (server-only change, no UI diff) - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups (in progress) - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

fix: read-only agent config/skill endpoints should not require agents:create (#3725)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - Access to agents, skills, and configurations is governed by a per-company permission system > - `agents:create` is a mutation-tier permission that controls who can create or modify agents > - `assertCanReadConfigurations` delegates to `assertCanCreateAgentsForCompany`, effectively requiring `agents:create` just to *read* agent configs, skills, and config revisions > - That's a permission regression: any company member without `agents:create` hits 403 on the Skills tab, agent config pages, and revision history — but those responses are already secret-redacted > - This pull request loosens the read gate to company membership only, while keeping every mutation-adjacent gate at `agents:create` ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No existing issue covers this directly — problem described in-PR following the bug-report template: **What happened** `assertCanReadConfigurations` delegates to `assertCanCreateAgentsForCompany`, effectively requiring the mutation-tier `agents:create` permission just to *read* agent configs, skills, and config revisions. Any company member without `agents:create` hits 403 on the Skills tab, agent config pages, and revision history — even though those responses are already secret-redacted (`redactAgentConfiguration`, `redactConfigRevision`). **Expected behavior** Read-only configuration/skill/revision endpoints are readable by any company member; only mutation-adjacent endpoints require `agents:create`. **Steps to reproduce** As a company member without `agents:create`, open the Skills tab or an agent config page (or `GET` the config/skill/revision endpoints) — the request fails with 403. ## What Changed - `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: - `assertCanReadConfigurations` now requires company membership only (plus the existing agent-key cross-company check). Previously it required `agents:create`. - `actorCanReadConfigurationsForCompany` (the boolean twin, used by `GET /agents/:id` to decide whether to return a restricted detail) now uses the standard try/catch-around-`assertCompanyAccess` pattern. - `POST /companies/:companyId/adapters/:type/test-environment` is not a pure read (it exercises adapter secrets) and now calls `assertCanCreateAgentsForCompany` directly instead of going through `assertCanReadConfigurations`. Behavior for this endpoint is unchanged. ## Verification - Existing tests pass. - Manual: log in as a company member without an `agents:create` grant. Visit the Skills tab on an agent and the agent configuration panel — both load. Try to edit the agent — blocked, as before. - Manual: POST to `/companies/:companyId/adapters/:type/test-environment` as the same user — still 403. ## Risks Low. The only behavior change is on read endpoints whose responses were already redacted (\`redactAgentConfiguration\`, \`redactConfigRevision\`). No secret escapes anywhere. ## Model Used Claude Opus 4.6 (1M context), extended thinking mode. ## Checklist - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] Thinking path traces from project context to this change - [x] Model used specified - [x] Tests run locally and pass - [x] CI green - [x] Greptile review addressed Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Add low-trust review containment (#7530)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is a control plane for AI-agent companies, so execution policy and trust boundaries are part of the product's safety contract. > - Low-trust review work needs narrower authority than normal same-company agents because hostile PRs, comments, attachments, and generated output can carry prompt-injection payloads. > - The current V1 shape gives trusted workers broad company context, which is useful for normal execution but too permissive for a reviewer assigned to hostile content. > - This branch adds a `low_trust_review` preset, source-trust tagging, route-level containment, and quarantine handling so low-trust output does not automatically flow into higher-trust wake context. > - The branch has been rebased onto current `origin/master`, and the low-trust migration was renumbered to `0097_low_trust_source_trust.sql` to avoid collisions with existing `0091` through `0096` migrations. > - Greptile feedback was addressed by tightening low-trust detection, preserving project-level trust policy checks, fixing issue-kind promotion lookup, removing duplicate post-lease isolation assertion, documenting fail-closed source-trust behavior, bounding ancestry checks, enforcing runtime issue context for CEOs, awaiting accepted-plan monitor authorization, and making low-trust issue source-trust tagging atomic. > - The benefit is a first production slice of deny-by-default review containment with regression coverage for the main control-plane pivot surfaces. Fixes #7531. ## What Changed - Added shared trust-policy types and validators, plus database/source-trust fields for issues, comments, documents, and work products. - Implemented server enforcement for low-trust issue scope, agent self-view redaction, secret/plugin/runtime denial paths, promotion checks, and quarantined continuation/wake context. - Added focused low-trust regression tests for resolver behavior, source trust, route authorization, heartbeat preflight ordering, runtime containment, and quarantine redaction. - Added board UI affordances for selecting/reviewing the low-trust preset and surfacing source-trust badges in relevant issue views. - Added `doc/LOW-TRUST-PRESETS.md`, updated `doc/SPEC-implementation.md`, and committed the low-trust review contract plan under `doc/plans/`. - Rebasing note: the original `0097_low_trust_source_trust.sql` migration was renamed to `0097_low_trust_source_trust.sql`; the SQL uses `ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS` so users who already applied the old-numbered migration are not broken by the renumbered migration. ## Verification - Rebased branch onto current `origin/master` and force-pushed with lease to `origin/PAP-10211-low-trust-agent` at head `2719f31e3`. - Confirmed the PR diff does not include `pnpm-lock.yaml` or `.github/workflows` changes. - Resolved upstream UI/comment conflicts by preserving deleted-comment tombstone behavior and low-trust source-trust badges/metadata. - Renumbered the low-trust source-trust migration to `0097_low_trust_source_trust.sql`; the SQL uses `ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS` so users who already applied an old-numbered copy are not broken. - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/lib/issue-chat-messages.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-workspace-session.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/source-trust.test.ts server/src/__tests__/workspace-runtime-service-authz.test.ts ui/src/lib/trust-policy-ui.test.ts ui/src/components/TrustPresetSection.test.tsx` - `pnpm run typecheck:build-gaps` - `git diff --check` - GitHub checks pass on head `2719f31e3`: build, typecheck/release registry, general tests, serialized server suites, e2e, canary, verify, policy/review, Socket, and Snyk. - Greptile Review passes with Confidence Score 5/5 and zero unresolved Greptile review threads. - No design screenshots/images were added because the task explicitly says not to add them unless they are specifically part of the work. ## Risks - Medium risk: this touches shared trust-policy contracts, server authorization paths, heartbeat context generation, migration metadata, and UI preset controls. - Low-trust containment is intentionally deny-by-default; legitimate future review workflows may need explicit allowlisted exceptions. - Plugin/runtime/security surfaces are broad, so regression tests cover the current known routes but future integrations must route through the same containment layer. - The PR is ready for review; GitHub checks are green and Greptile is 5/5. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5 coding agent, tool-enabled shell and GitHub CLI workflow. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] UI changes are covered by focused tests; no screenshots were added per task instruction not to add design images unless specifically required - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

[codex] Add agent permissions and controls plan (#6386)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies by keeping task ownership, approvals, and operator control inside one control plane. > - Agent permissions and plugin-hosted company settings sit on the boundary between autonomy and governance. > - V1 needs scoped task assignment rules, plugin extension points, and clearer company access surfaces without weakening company boundaries. > - The branch builds the core authorization service, plugin SDK/host APIs, and UI simplifications needed to support those controls. > - Paperclip EE plugin surfaces were intentionally moved out of this core PR per review direction, so this PR now carries only the public core/plugin infrastructure work. > - The latest updates preserve the PAP-9937 branch changes that belong in this PR, remove the `design/` artifacts, and exclude the experimental `plugin-briefs` package. > - Greptile feedback was applied through the authorization/audit paths and the final cleanup commit was re-reviewed at 5/5 with no unresolved Greptile threads. > - The benefit is safer assignment control with extension hooks for richer permission products while preserving simple defaults for normal operators. ## What Changed - Added scoped task-assignment authorization decisions and routed issue/agent assignment mutations through the authorization service. - Added plugin SDK and host APIs for company settings slots, authorization policy/grant management, assignment previews, and bridge invocation scope propagation. - Simplified core company access UI and moved advanced controls behind plugin-provided settings surfaces. - Added retry-now affordances for blocked issue next-step notices. - Added protected-assignment enforcement for persisted agent/project/issue policies, including explicit-grant fallback behavior. - Added incremental principal-access compatibility backfill for active agent memberships and role-default human permission grants. - Added the Markdown code block wrap action fix from the latest branch changes. - Removed `design/` artifacts from the PR and removed `packages/plugins/plugin-briefs` from the final diff. - Addressed Greptile feedback for plugin actor sanitization, legacy membership handling, audit pagination, unknown grant-scope metadata, and startup test mocks. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/access-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts` -> 2 files passed, 54 tests passed. - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/server-startup-feedback-export.test.ts server/src/__tests__/access-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts` -> 3 files passed, 62 tests passed. - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/authorization-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/plugin-access-authorization-host-services.test.ts server/src/__tests__/server-startup-feedback-export.test.ts` -> 3 files passed, 28 tests passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` -> passed. - `git diff --check` -> passed. - `node ./scripts/check-docker-deps-stage.mjs` -> passed. - `CI=true pnpm install --frozen-lockfile --ignore-scripts` -> passed with no lockfile update. - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/components/MarkdownBody.interaction.test.tsx` -> 1 test passed. - `git ls-files design packages/plugins/plugin-briefs | wc -l` -> 0. - GitHub CI on `40cd83b53` -> all checks passed, merge state `CLEAN`. - Greptile on `40cd83b53` -> 5/5, 102 files reviewed, 0 comments/annotations added, 0 unresolved review threads. - Confirmed the PR diff contains no `design/`, `packages/plugins/plugin-briefs`, `pnpm-lock.yaml`, or `.github/workflows` changes. ## Risks - Medium: task assignment authorization paths are behaviorally stricter for protected/private policy data, so existing plugin-authored policies may block assignment until explicit grants or approval flows are configured. - Medium: plugin-host authorization APIs expand the surface area available to trusted plugins and need careful review for company scoping. - Low: startup now performs a principal-access compatibility backfill, but the migration and runtime backfill use conflict-tolerant inserts. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5 coding agent, tool-enabled workflow with shell, git, and GitHub CLI access. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Switch OpenCode to explicit static/local-aware model selection (#5117)
> **Stacked PR (part 4 of 7).** Depends on: - PR #5114 - PR #5115 - PR #5116 > Diff against `master` includes commits from earlier PRs in the stack — the new commit in this PR is the topmost one. ## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - When creating an OpenCode-local agent, Paperclip currently validates > `adapterConfig.model` against the *Paperclip host's* `opencode models` output > - SSH testing surfaced that this blocks creating an OpenCode agent for an SSH > environment: the model that exists on the SSH target isn't visible to the > host, so creation fails with "OpenCode requires `adapterConfig.model` in > provider/model format" even when the operator picked a real remote model > - The initial direction was environment-aware model discovery; the final > decision was to keep OpenCode on the same explicit-model pattern as other > adapters (default + curated list + manual override) and stop blocking > creation on host-side discovery > - This PR does both: the adapter-models endpoint now accepts `environmentId` and > probes against the target environment, and the create-time hard gate is > replaced by `requireOpenCodeModelId` which validates `provider/model` *format* > without requiring host-local discovery. Test/run-time still surfaces real > auth/availability problems > - The benefit is that operators can create OpenCode agents for remote > environments without out-of-band setup, and the model picker in the UI > reflects the actually-targeted environment ## What Changed - Added `requireOpenCodeModelId(input)` in `opencode-local/src/server/models.ts`, exported it from the adapter index - `ensureOpenCodeModelConfiguredAndAvailable` now delegates the format check to `requireOpenCodeModelId` - `agentsApi.adapterModels(companyId, adapterType, { environmentId })` now accepts an environment ID and passes it as a query parameter - `queryKeys.agents.adapterModels` now keys on `(companyId, adapterType, environmentId)` - `server/src/routes/agents.ts` reads and validates the new query parameter, forwarding it to the adapter's model probe - `AgentConfigForm.tsx` and `OnboardingWizard.tsx` build the model query key from the currently selected default environment ID and disable autodetect for `opencode_local` (model selection is explicit) - `NewAgent.tsx` simplified — no longer special-cases OpenCode autodetect - `company-portability.ts` no longer needs OpenCode-specific autodetect handling - Tests added/updated: `adapter-model-refresh-routes.test.ts`, `adapter-models.test.ts`, `agent-permissions-routes.test.ts`, `opencode-local/src/server/models.test.ts` ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server test -- adapter-models adapter-model-refresh agent-permissions` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-opencode-local test` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui test -- AgentConfigForm OnboardingWizard NewAgent` - Manual QA in browser: 1. Boot Paperclip on Tailscale-bound port (so it's reachable from another machine), create an OpenCode-local agent, switch the default environment between two installed sandboxes, and confirm the model list refreshes per-environment 2. Submit with a malformed `provider/model` string and verify the new `requireOpenCodeModelId` error surfaces - Before/after screenshots attached for `AgentConfigForm` model picker ## Risks - Behavioural shift: switching default environment now triggers a model refetch. Should be cheap but introduces a new UI loading state for OpenCode users. - Removing dynamic autodetect for OpenCode: if any user configured an agent without specifying `model` and relied on autodetect populating it, that agent will now fail at submit time. Mitigation: validation error is explicit and actionable. - New query string parameter on `/api/companies/:id/adapter-models` — older clients that omit it still work (parameter is optional and defaults to null). ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-5.4 (reasoning effort: high) via Codex CLI - Provider: OpenAI - Used to author the code changes in this PR ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [ ] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes — N/A - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

[codex] Raise agent heartbeat concurrency default (#4954)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - Agent heartbeat settings control how much parallel work one employee can run > - The previous default of 5 concurrent runs was too restrictive for active local agent teams > - The shared default, heartbeat clamp, docs, and route/import/UI expectations need to agree > - This pull request raises the default heartbeat concurrency to 20 while keeping explicit headroom up to 50 for power users > - The benefit is higher throughput for agent teams without each new agent needing manual runtime config edits ## What Changed - Raised `AGENT_DEFAULT_MAX_CONCURRENT_RUNS` from 5 to 20. - Raised the heartbeat service max clamp from 10 to 50, keeping the new default below the ceiling. - Updated V1 implementation docs and tests that assert default imported/exported runtime config. - Updated the new-agent UI runtime config test to assert the shared default constant instead of duplicating the numeric value. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts ui/src/lib/new-agent-runtime-config.test.ts` ## Risks - Medium risk: new agents can consume more local execution capacity by default. The heartbeat scheduler still respects configured max concurrency and budget/pause controls, and operators can lower or raise the per-agent cap within the `1..50` clamp. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5 coding agent, tool use and local command execution. Add cheap model profiles for local adapters (#4881)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is a control plane for autonomous AI companies, where adapters are the boundary between the board, agents, and execution runtimes. > - Local adapters currently expose a primary runtime configuration, but operators often need a cheaper model lane for routine or low-risk work. > - That cheap lane has to stay adapter-owned: runtime profile settings should not mutate the primary adapter config or bypass existing auth/secret mediation. > - Issue creation also needs an ergonomic way to request primary, cheap, or custom model behavior for a selected assignee. > - This pull request adds a first-class `cheap` model profile contract across adapter capabilities, heartbeat config resolution, agent configuration, and issue creation. > - The benefit is cheaper task execution can be configured and requested explicitly while preserving adapter boundaries, secret handling, and audit visibility. ## What Changed - Added adapter model-profile capability metadata and a `cheap` profile contract for supported local adapters. - Applied `runtimeConfig.modelProfiles.cheap.adapterConfig` during heartbeat config resolution, including requested/applied/fallback run metadata. - Added agent configuration UI for cheap model profile settings without writing those settings into primary `adapterConfig`. - Added New Issue assignee model lane controls for Primary / Cheap / Custom and request payload handling. - Added run ledger profile badges and Storybook stories for the new cheap-lane UI states. - Added tests for validators, heartbeat model profile application, permission/secret mediation, UI payload helpers, and run ledger rendering. - Added committed UI verification screenshots under `docs/pr-screenshots/pap-2837/`. - Addressed Greptile review feedback around cheap-profile defaults, shared profile types, and fallback test data. ## Verification Local: - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/shared/src/validators/issue.test.ts server/src/__tests__/adapter-registry.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-model-profile.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueRunLedger.test.tsx ui/src/lib/agent-config-patch.test.ts ui/src/lib/issue-assignee-overrides.test.ts ui/src/lib/new-agent-runtime-config.test.ts` — passed, 8 files / 103 tests. - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/lib/new-agent-runtime-config.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueRunLedger.test.tsx` — passed after Greptile/rebase follow-up, 2 files / 17 tests. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` — passed after Greptile/rebase follow-up. - `pnpm -r typecheck` — passed. - `pnpm build` — passed. - `pnpm test:run` — did not complete successfully in this local worktree: it stopped in pre-existing `@paperclipai/adapter-utils` sandbox/SSH fixture suites outside this PR diff. Failures were 5s local timeouts plus `git init -b` unsupported by this machine's Git 2.21.0. The branch-specific targeted suites above passed. - Branch was fetched/rebased onto `public-gh/master`; `git rev-list --left-right --count public-gh/master...HEAD` reports `0 9`. Remote PR checks on latest head `e30bf399146451c86cee98ed528d51d33fa5af5a`: - `policy` — passed. - `verify` — passed. - `e2e` — passed. - `Greptile Review` — passed, confidence score 5/5; Greptile review threads resolved. - `security/snyk (cryppadotta)` — passed. [codex] Harden recovery issue handling (#4600)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - The control plane must recover stranded agent work without creating new operational loops > - Stranded recovery issues can themselves fail, and exposing raw retry errors in comments can leak sensitive adapter details > - New local companies also should not force a hire-approval gate unless operators enable that policy > - This pull request hardens recovery issue handling, redacts retry failure details in issue copy, preserves `maxConcurrentRuns: 1`, and flips new-hire approval to an opt-in default > - The benefit is safer automatic recovery and smoother default company setup without hidden migration conflicts ## What Changed - Added migration `0071_default_hire_approval_off` and updated company schema/import/export/docs so hire approvals default off and serialize only when enabled. - Added migration `0072_large_sandman` with a partial unique index preventing duplicate active stranded recovery issues for the same source issue. - Blocked failed `stranded_issue_recovery` issues in place instead of creating nested recovery issues. - Redacted latest retry failure details from recovery issue comments while still linking reviewers to run evidence. - Allowed `maxConcurrentRuns: 1` to be honored by heartbeat concurrency normalization. - Added focused regression coverage for recovery recursion, redaction, migration ordering, and concurrency behavior. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db run check:migrations` - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server server/src/__tests__/recovery-classifiers.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts --pool=forks --poolOptions.forks.isolate=true` - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts --pool=forks --poolOptions.forks.isolate=true` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts --pool=forks --poolOptions.forks.isolate=true` exits 0, but this host skipped the embedded Postgres tests with the existing init guard. - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-dependency-scheduling.test.ts --pool=forks --poolOptions.forks.isolate=true` exits 0, but this host skipped the embedded Postgres tests with the existing init guard. ## Risks - Migration risk is low but this PR intentionally owns both new migrations to avoid separate PR migration-journal conflicts. - Recovery comments now require operators to inspect linked run evidence for details instead of reading raw errors inline. - The hire approval default changes behavior for newly created/imported companies only; existing persisted company settings are not changed except by the SQL default for future rows. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Stabilize serialized server route tests (#4448)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - The server route suite is a core confidence layer for auth, issue context, and workspace runtime behavior > - Some route tests were doing extra module/server isolation work that made local runs slower and more fragile > - The stable Vitest runner also needs to pass server-relative exclude paths to avoid accidentally re-including serialized suites > - This pull request tightens route test isolation and runner serialization behavior > - The benefit is more reliable targeted and stable-route test execution without product behavior changes ## What Changed - Updated `run-vitest-stable.mjs` to exclude serialized server tests using server-relative paths. - Forced the server Vitest config to use a single worker in addition to isolated forks. - Simplified agent permission route tests to create per-request test servers without shared server lifecycle state. - Stabilized issue goal context route mocks by using static mocked services and a sequential suite. - Re-registered workspace runtime route mocks before cache-busted route imports. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run --project @paperclipai/server server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issues-goal-context-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/workspace-runtime-routes-authz.test.ts --pool=forks --poolOptions.forks.isolate=true` - `node --check scripts/run-vitest-stable.mjs` ## Risks - Low risk. This is test infrastructure only. - The stable runner path fix changes which tests are excluded from the non-serialized server batch, matching the server project root that Vitest applies internally. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. Add sandbox environment support (#4415)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies. > - The environment/runtime layer decides where agent work executes and how the control plane reaches those runtimes. > - Today Paperclip can run locally and over SSH, but sandboxed execution needs a first-class environment model instead of one-off adapter behavior. > - We also want sandbox providers to be pluggable so the core does not hardcode every provider implementation. > - This branch adds the Sandbox environment path, the provider contract, and a deterministic fake provider plugin. > - That required synchronized changes across shared contracts, plugin SDK surfaces, server runtime orchestration, and the UI environment/workspace flows. > - The result is that sandbox execution becomes a core control-plane capability while keeping provider implementations extensible and testable. ## What Changed - Added sandbox runtime support to the environment execution path, including runtime URL discovery, sandbox execution targeting, orchestration, and heartbeat integration. - Added plugin-provider support for sandbox environments so providers can be supplied via plugins instead of hardcoded server logic. - Added the fake sandbox provider plugin with deterministic behavior suitable for local and automated testing. - Updated shared types, validators, plugin protocol definitions, and SDK helpers to carry sandbox provider and workspace-runtime contracts across package boundaries. - Updated server routes and services so companies can create sandbox environments, select them for work, and execute work through the sandbox runtime path. - Updated the UI environment and workspace surfaces to expose sandbox environment configuration and selection. - Added test coverage for sandbox runtime behavior, provider seams, environment route guards, orchestration, and the fake provider plugin. ## Verification - Ran locally before the final fixture-only scrub: - `pnpm -r typecheck` - `pnpm test:run` - `pnpm build` - Ran locally after the final scrub amend: - `pnpm vitest run server/src/__tests__/runtime-api.test.ts` - Reviewer spot checks: - create a sandbox environment backed by the fake provider plugin - run work through that environment - confirm sandbox provider execution does not inherit host secrets implicitly ## Risks - This touches shared contracts, plugin SDK plumbing, server runtime orchestration, and UI environment/workspace flows, so regressions would likely show up as cross-layer mismatches rather than isolated type errors. - Runtime URL discovery and sandbox callback selection are sensitive to host/bind configuration; if that logic is wrong, sandbox-backed callbacks may fail even when execution succeeds. - The fake provider plugin is intentionally deterministic and test-oriented; future providers may expose capability gaps that this branch does not yet cover. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex coding agent on a GPT-5-class backend in the Paperclip/Codex harness. Exact backend model ID is not exposed in-session. Tool-assisted workflow with shell execution, file editing, git history inspection, and local test execution. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

Add SSH environment support (#4358)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - The environments subsystem already models execution environments, but before this branch there was no end-to-end SSH-backed runtime path for agents to actually run work against a remote box > - That meant agents could be configured around environment concepts without a reliable way to execute adapter sessions remotely, sync workspace state, and preserve run context across supported adapters > - We also need environment selection to participate in normal Paperclip control-plane behavior: agent defaults, project/issue selection, route validation, and environment probing > - Because this capability is still experimental, the UI surface should be easy to hide and easy to remove later without undoing the underlying implementation > - This pull request adds SSH environment execution support across the runtime, adapters, routes, schema, and tests, then puts the visible environment-management UI behind an experimental flag > - The benefit is that we can validate real SSH-backed agent execution now while keeping the user-facing controls safely gated until the feature is ready to come out of experimentation ## What Changed - Added SSH-backed execution target support in the shared adapter runtime, including remote workspace preparation, skill/runtime asset sync, remote session handling, and workspace restore behavior after runs. - Added SSH execution coverage for supported local adapters, plus remote execution tests across Claude, Codex, Cursor, Gemini, OpenCode, and Pi. - Added environment selection and environment-management backend support needed for SSH execution, including route/service work, validation, probing, and agent default environment persistence. - Added CLI support for SSH environment lab verification and updated related docs/tests. - Added the `enableEnvironments` experimental flag and gated the environment UI behind it on company settings, agent configuration, and project configuration surfaces. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapters/claude-local/src/server/execute.remote.test.ts packages/adapters/cursor-local/src/server/execute.remote.test.ts packages/adapters/gemini-local/src/server/execute.remote.test.ts packages/adapters/opencode-local/src/server/execute.remote.test.ts packages/adapters/pi-local/src/server/execute.remote.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/environment-routes.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/instance-settings-routes.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/lib/new-agent-hire-payload.test.ts ui/src/lib/new-agent-runtime-config.test.ts` - `pnpm -r typecheck` - `pnpm build` - Manual verification on a branch-local dev server: - enabled the experimental flag - created an SSH environment - created a Linux Claude agent using that environment - confirmed a run executed on the Linux box and synced workspace changes back ## Risks - Medium: this touches runtime execution flow across multiple adapters, so regressions would likely show up in remote session setup, workspace sync, or environment selection precedence. - The UI flag reduces exposure, but the underlying runtime and route changes are still substantial and rely on migration correctness. - The change set is broad across adapters, control-plane services, migrations, and UI gating, so review should pay close attention to environment-selection precedence and remote workspace lifecycle behavior. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex via Paperclip's local Codex adapter, GPT-5-class coding model with tool use and code execution in the local repo workspace. The local adapter does not surface a more specific public model version string in this branch workflow.

## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies. > - Operators supervise that work through issues, comments, approvals, and the board UI. > - Some agent proposals need structured board/user decisions, not hidden markdown conventions or heavyweight governed approvals. > - Issue-thread interactions already provide a natural thread-native surface for proposed tasks and questions. > - This pull request extends that surface with request confirmations, richer interaction cards, and agent/plugin/MCP helpers. > - The benefit is that plan approvals and yes/no decisions become explicit, auditable, and resumable without losing the single-issue workflow. ## What Changed - Added persisted issue-thread interactions for suggested tasks, structured questions, and request confirmations. - Added board UI cards for interaction review, selection, question answers, and accept/reject confirmation flows. - Added MCP and plugin SDK helpers for creating interaction cards from agents/plugins. - Updated agent wake instructions, onboarding assets, Paperclip skill docs, and public docs to prefer structured confirmations for issue-scoped decisions. - Rebased the branch onto `public-gh/master` and renumbered branch migrations to `0063` and `0064`; the idempotency migration uses `ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS` for old branch users. ## Verification - `git diff --check public-gh/master..HEAD` - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts packages/mcp-server/src/tools.test.ts packages/shared/src/issue-thread-interactions.test.ts ui/src/lib/issue-thread-interactions.test.ts ui/src/lib/issue-chat-messages.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueThreadInteractionCard.test.tsx ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx server/src/__tests__/issue-thread-interaction-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-thread-interactions-service.test.ts server/src/services/issue-thread-interactions.test.ts` -> 9 files / 79 tests passed - `pnpm -r typecheck` -> passed, including `packages/db` migration numbering check ## Risks - Medium: this adds a new issue-thread interaction model across db/shared/server/ui/plugin surfaces. - Migration risk is reduced by placing this branch after current master migrations (`0063`, `0064`) and making the idempotency column add idempotent for users who applied the old branch numbering. - UI interaction behavior is covered by component tests, but this PR does not include browser screenshots. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5-class coding agent runtime. Exact model ID and context window are not exposed in this Paperclip run; tool use and local shell/code execution were enabled. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Harden API route authorization boundaries (#4122)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies. > - The REST API is the control-plane boundary for companies, agents, plugins, adapters, costs, invites, and issue mutations. > - Several routes still relied on broad board or company access checks without consistently enforcing the narrower actor, company, and active-checkout boundaries those operations require. > - That can allow agents or non-admin users to mutate sensitive resources outside the intended governance path. > - This pull request hardens the route authorization layer and adds regression coverage for the audited API surfaces. > - The benefit is tighter multi-company isolation, safer plugin and adapter administration, and stronger enforcement of active issue ownership. ## What Changed - Added route-level authorization checks for budgets, plugin administration/scoped routes, adapter management, company import/export, direct agent creation, invite test resolution, and issue mutation/write surfaces. - Enforced active checkout ownership for agent-authenticated issue mutations, while preserving explicit management overrides for permitted managers. - Restricted sensitive adapter and plugin management operations to instance-admin or properly scoped actors. - Tightened company portability and invite probing routes so agents cannot cross company boundaries. - Updated access constants and the Company Access UI copy for the new active-checkout management grant. - Added focused regression tests covering cross-company denial, agent self-mutation denial, admin-only operations, and active checkout ownership. - Rebased the branch onto `public-gh/master` and fixed validation fallout from the rebase: heartbeat-context route ordering and a company import/export e2e fixture that now opts out of direct-hire approval before using direct agent creation. - Updated onboarding and signoff e2e setup to create seed agents through `/agent-hires` plus board approval, so they remain compatible with the approval-gated new-agent default. - Addressed Greptile feedback by removing a duplicate company export API alias, avoiding N+1 reporting-chain lookups in active-checkout override checks, allowing agent mutations on unassigned `in_progress` issues, and blocking NAT64 invite-probe targets. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/issues-goal-context-routes.test.ts cli/src/__tests__/company-import-export-e2e.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/plugin-routes-authz.test.ts server/src/__tests__/adapter-routes-authz.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/company-portability-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/costs-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/invite-test-resolution-route.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-agent-mutation-ownership-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/issue-agent-mutation-ownership-routes.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/invite-test-resolution-route.test.ts` - `pnpm -r typecheck` - `pnpm --filter server typecheck` - `pnpm --filter ui typecheck` - `pnpm build` - `pnpm test:e2e -- tests/e2e/onboarding.spec.ts tests/e2e/signoff-policy.spec.ts` - `pnpm test:e2e -- tests/e2e/signoff-policy.spec.ts` - `pnpm test:run` was also run. It failed under default full-suite parallelism with two order-dependent failures in `plugin-routes-authz.test.ts` and `routines-e2e.test.ts`; both files passed when rerun directly together with `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/plugin-routes-authz.test.ts server/src/__tests__/routines-e2e.test.ts`. ## Risks - Medium risk: this changes authorization behavior across multiple sensitive API surfaces, so callers that depended on broad board/company access may now receive `403` or `409` until they use the correct governance path. - Direct agent creation now respects the company-level board-approval requirement; integrations that need pending hires should use `/api/companies/:companyId/agent-hires`. - Active in-progress issue mutations now require checkout ownership or an explicit management override, which may reveal workflow assumptions in older automation. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5 coding agent, tool-using workflow with local shell, Git, GitHub CLI, and repository tests. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

[codex] Improve agent runtime recovery and governance (#4086)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies. > - The heartbeat runtime, agent import path, and agent configuration defaults determine whether work is dispatched safely and predictably. > - Several accumulated fixes all touched agent execution recovery, wake routing, import behavior, and runtime concurrency defaults. > - Those changes need to land together so the heartbeat service and agent creation defaults stay internally consistent. > - This pull request groups the runtime/governance changes from the split branch into one standalone branch. > - The benefit is safer recovery for stranded runs, bounded high-volume reads, imported-agent approval correctness, skill-template support, and a clearer default concurrency policy. ## What Changed - Fixed stranded continuation recovery so successful automatic retries are requeued instead of incorrectly blocking the issue. - Bounded high-volume issue/log reads across issue, heartbeat, agent, project, and workspace paths. - Fixed imported-agent approval and instruction-path permission handling. - Quarantined seeded worktree execution state during worktree provisioning. - Queued approval follow-up wakes and hardened SQL_ASCII heartbeat output handling. - Added reusable agent instruction templates for hiring flows. - Set the default max concurrent agent runs to five and updated related UI/tests/docs. ## Verification - `pnpm install --frozen-lockfile` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-comment-wake-batching.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-list.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issues-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts ui/src/lib/new-agent-runtime-config.test.ts` - Split integration check: merged this branch first, followed by the other [PAP-1614](/PAP/issues/PAP-1614) branches, with no merge conflicts. - Confirmed this branch does not include `pnpm-lock.yaml`. ## Risks - Medium risk: touches heartbeat recovery, queueing, and issue list bounds in central runtime paths. - Imported-agent and concurrency default behavior changes may affect existing automation that assumes one-at-a-time default runs. - No database migrations are included. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5.4 tool-enabled coding model, agentic code-editing/runtime with local shell and GitHub CLI access; exact context window and reasoning mode are not exposed by the Paperclip harness.

[codex] harden authenticated routes and issue editor reliability (#3741)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - The control plane depends on authenticated routes enforcing company boundaries and role permissions correctly > - This branch also touches the issue detail and markdown editing flows operators use while handling advisory and triage work > - Partial issue cache seeds and fragile rich-editor parsing could leave important issue content missing or blank at the moment an operator needed it > - Blocked issues becoming actionable again should wake their assignee automatically instead of silently staying idle > - This pull request rebases the advisory follow-up branch onto current `master`, hardens authenticated route authorization, and carries the issue-detail/editor reliability fixes forward with regression tests > - The benefit is tighter authz on sensitive routes plus more reliable issue/advisory editing and wakeup behavior on top of the latest base ## What Changed - Hardened authenticated route authorization across agent, activity, approval, access, project, plugin, health, execution-workspace, portability, and related server paths, with new cross-tenant and runtime-authz regression coverage. - Switched issue detail queries from `initialData` to placeholder-based hydration so list/quicklook seeds still refetch full issue bodies. - Normalized advisory-style HTML images before mounting the markdown editor and strengthened fallback behavior when the rich editor silently fails or rejects the content. - Woke assigned agents when blocked issues move back to `todo`, with route coverage for reopen and unblock transitions. - Rebasing note: this branch now sits cleanly on top of the latest `master` tip used for the PR base. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/lib/issueDetailQuery.test.tsx ui/src/components/MarkdownEditor.test.tsx server/src/__tests__/issue-comment-reopen-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/activity-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-cross-tenant-authz-routes.test.ts` - Confirmed `pnpm-lock.yaml` is not part of the PR diff. - Rebased the branch onto current `public-gh/master` before publishing. ## Risks - Broad authz tightening may expose existing flows that were relying on permissive board or agent access and now need explicit grants. - Markdown editor fallback changes could affect focus or rendering in edge-case content that mixes HTML-like advisory markup with normal markdown. - This verification was intentionally scoped to touched regressions and did not run the full repository suite. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5-based coding agent in the Codex CLI environment with tool use for terminal, git, and GitHub operations. The exact runtime model identifier is not exposed inside this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] If this change affects the UI, it is behavior-only and does not need before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes, or no documentation changes were needed for these internal fixes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

[codex] Harden execution reliability and heartbeat tooling (#3679)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - Reliable execution depends on heartbeat routing, issue lifecycle semantics, telemetry, and a fast enough local verification loop to keep regressions visible > - The remaining commits on this branch were mostly server/runtime correctness fixes plus test and documentation follow-ups in that area > - Those changes are logically separate from the UI-focused issue-detail and workspace/navigation branches even when they touch overlapping issue APIs > - This pull request groups the execution reliability, heartbeat, telemetry, and tooling changes into one standalone branch > - The benefit is a focused review of the control-plane correctness work, including the follow-up fix that restored the implicit comment-reopen helpers after branch splitting ## What Changed - Hardened issue/heartbeat execution behavior, including self-review stage skipping, deferred mention wakes during active execution, stranded execution recovery, active-run scoping, assignee resolution, and blocked-to-todo wake resumption - Reduced noisy polling/logging overhead by trimming issue run payloads, compacting persisted run logs, silencing high-volume request logs, and capping heartbeat-run queries in dashboard/inbox surfaces - Expanded telemetry and status semantics with adapter/model fields on task completion plus clearer status guidance in docs/onboarding material - Updated test infrastructure and verification defaults with faster route-test module isolation, cheaper default `pnpm test`, e2e isolation from local state, and repo verification follow-ups - Included docs/release housekeeping from the branch and added a small follow-up commit restoring the implicit comment-reopen helpers that were dropped during branch reconstruction ## Verification - `pnpm vitest run server/src/__tests__/issue-comment-reopen-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-telemetry-routes.test.ts` - `pnpm vitest run server/src/__tests__/http-log-policy.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-run-log.test.ts server/src/__tests__/health.test.ts` - `server/src/__tests__/activity-service.test.ts`, `server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-comment-wake-batching.test.ts`, and `server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts` were attempted on this host but the embedded Postgres harness reported init-script/data-dir problems and skipped or failed to start, so they are noted as environment-limited ## Risks - Medium: this branch changes core issue/heartbeat routing and reopen/wakeup behavior, so regressions would affect agent execution flow rather than isolated UI polish - Because it also updates verification infrastructure, reviewers should pay attention to whether the new tests are asserting the right failure modes and not just reshaping harness behavior ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex coding agent (GPT-5-class runtime in Codex CLI; exact deployed model ID is not exposed in this environment), reasoning enabled, tool use and local code execution enabled ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(authz): scope import, approvals, activity, and heartbeat routes (#3315)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents and company-scoped control-plane actions for zero-human companies. > - This change touches the server authz boundary around company portability, approvals, activity, and heartbeat-run operations. > - The vulnerability was that board-authenticated callers could cross company boundaries or create new companies through import paths without the same authorization checks enforced elsewhere. > - Once that gap existed, an attacker could chain it into higher-impact behavior through agent execution paths. > - The fix needed to harden every confirmed authorization gap in the reported chain, not just the first route that exposed it. > - This pull request adds the missing instance-admin and company-access checks and adds regression tests for each affected route. > - The benefit is that cross-company actions and new-company import flows now follow the same control-plane authorization rules as the rest of the product. ## What Changed - Required instance-admin access for `new_company` import preview/apply flows in `server/src/routes/companies.ts`. - Required company access before approval decision routes in `server/src/routes/approvals.ts`. - Required company access for activity creation and heartbeat-run issue listing in `server/src/routes/activity.ts`. - Required company access before heartbeat cancellation in `server/src/routes/agents.ts`. - Added regression coverage in the corresponding server route tests. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/company-portability-routes.test.ts src/__tests__/approval-routes-idempotency.test.ts src/__tests__/activity-routes.test.ts src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` - Prior verification on the original security patch branch also included `pnpm build`. ## Risks - Low code risk: the change is narrow and only adds missing authorization gates to existing routes. - Operational risk: the advisory is already public, so this PR should be merged quickly to minimize the public unpatched window. - Residual product risk remains around open signup / bootstrap defaults, which was intentionally left out of this patch because the current first-user onboarding flow depends on it. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-5 Codex coding agent with tool use and local code execution in the Codex CLI environment. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [ ] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Forgotten <forgottenrunes@protonmail.com> |
