DottaandPaperclip c6ee96a3df fix: stop idle MCP event polling (#17036)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - MCP task subscriptions and Dot mailboxes notify external clients
when work changes.
> - Their delivery workers queried SQL every two seconds, including when
no work existed.
> - Those queries prevent idle databases from becoming quiet across many
hosted instances.
> - Existing activity, mailbox, subscription, and delivery records
already preserve the work.
> - This pull request uses committed-write signals and saved retry
deadlines to drive delivery.
> - Idle subscriptions become quiet while startup, retry, drain, and
shutdown recovery remain supported.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Related sleep migrations: #15625, #17000, #17008. Searched open PRs and
issues for MCP event sleep/polling work; no duplicate found.

**What happened?**

Each public MCP and Dot event service started a two-second interval. It
checked settings, scanned subscriptions, created delivery receipts,
cleaned expired records, and attempted delivery even without changes.

**Expected behavior**

An empty or subscribed-but-idle service produces no recurring SQL or
network traffic. Committed events trigger prompt delivery. Only
unfinished work retains a retry deadline.

**Steps to reproduce**

Configure a public MCP origin and start the server. Observe recurring
settings queries with MCP disabled, or subscription/queue queries with
it enabled. No incoming task changes are required.

**Paperclip version or commit**

Initially inspected master at
`8b4ab65b1c3d863d282752e83307943720a5c85c`; rebased onto `c2daf906d9`
after master advanced. The only conflict was overlapping imports in the
heartbeat queue; both were preserved.

## What Changed

- Register separate MCP and Dot workers with the existing delivery
coordinator. Remove both unconditional intervals.
- Notify from committed activity, comment, mailbox, subscription, and
experimental-settings writes. Centralize comment insertion in one small
helper so normal callers do not manage recovery state.
- Preserve outer transaction ownership, uncertainty reconciliation, and
requests deferred during drain or standby.
- Restore delivery retry/abandoned-claim deadlines on startup. Scan
subscriptions in pages of 20; drain full source and delivery batches
without another external event. Scope subscription refreshes to their
subscription or shared Dot binding, issue activity to its task, comment
discovery to its company, and mailbox/assignment changes to their
binding. Retry deadlines do not rescan unchanged sources.
- Run expired-record cleanup opportunistically. Preserve on-use expiry
checks and the existing one-time automatic Dot challenge behavior.
- Add real PostgreSQL lifecycle coverage and guarded external test
database options for existing MCP/Dot integrations. Document producers
and the supported writer model.

## Verification

- Final head `e54fb34485921016ef988f7df9cca173a9ebdfc8`: all CI checks
passed (55 successful checks/statuses, one neutral review, two
intentionally skipped Storybook checks). Mergeable with no unresolved
review threads. Greptile: 5/5 on this exact commit; security scan
passed.
- All 284 affected tests passed in one local run after rebasing: 16
real-PostgreSQL lifecycle tests, 24 coordinator/scheduler/standby tests,
84 public MCP tests, 54 Dot runner tests, and 106 interaction-service
tests.
- Server TypeScript passed after refreshing generated Runner/plugin SDK
dependencies from master. Full workspace typecheck and build passed
before the rebase; final CI repeated typecheck and build successfully on
the rebased head.
- Coverage includes SQL/network quiet with configuration and history,
committed writes, outer commit/rollback, drain/standby, retry
restoration, reenable/unsubscribe, concurrent writes, shutdown,
source/delivery/subscription batch boundaries, Dot challenges and
reconnects, native broker fences, comment discovery, and
company-isolated scans.
- CI exposed an existing lock-order test whose insert proxy missed
nested transactions and waited indefinitely. The fixture now observes
nested inserts, preserves the lock assertion, and fails explicitly if
interception is missed. The complete 106-test interaction suite and the
formerly hanging CI shard pass. The warm-standby/settings test doubles
were also updated for the new coordinator/transaction boundaries.
- Earlier fixture failures (required timestamps, cleanup, external
database selection, async waits) were corrected. One existing OAuth
first-poll timing assertion and one E2E company-cleanup race passed on
single reruns; the final full CI run passed without a rerun. No OAuth or
company-deletion behavior was changed.
- The local full `pnpm test:run` attempt could not initialize embedded
PostgreSQL after five attempts. It was stopped; affected integrations
were verified with separate disposable PostgreSQL 17 databases, and
final CI supplied the full-suite result. Embedded-only local skips are
not counted as passes.

## Risks

- Notifications use one live server/database scope. Independent SQL
writers and separate live replicas do not trigger these process-local
workers. Startup recovers durable state; continuous multi-writer
discovery needs a notification/ingress contract.
- Idle physical cleanup waits for startup or another enabled sweep.
Subscription and authorization expiry remain enforced on use.
- Existing delivery claims, retry bounds, signatures, and receipt
deduplication remain in place. No new tables or migrations.
- Host sleep-safety checks remain conservative. MCP/Dot retry deadlines
are not yet covered by Paperclip Cloud's scheduled-wake contract. This
proves worker quiet, not deployed host suspension or fleet savings.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex (GPT-6), with reasoning, local code execution, and tool
use. The runtime does not expose a more specific model version or
context-window size.

DottaandPaperclip cb2d6e80d3 perf: stop polling idle Muse maintenance (#17000)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - Muse connects an external worker to a Paperclip agent.
> - Its maintenance loop scans the database every five seconds, even
without bindings.
> - These empty scans prevent an otherwise idle database from sleeping.
> - The shared delivery coordinator can react to committed writes and
saved deadlines.
> - This change uses that coordinator and retains recovery for
unfinished assignments.
> - Idle Muse maintenance can now stop querying the database.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What existing behavior does this improve?**

Muse qualification, OAuth authority, and terminal assignment
maintenance.

**Current behavior**

A claimed instance runs two empty scans every five seconds even when
Muse has no bindings. This produces about 34,560 unnecessary queries per
day. Warm standby suppression from #16974 does not cover claimed
instances.

**Proposed behavior**

Recover once at startup. Wake after relevant transactions settle.
Schedule qualification expiry at its saved deadline. Retain five-second
recovery only for failures and unfinished assignments.

**Reason and benefit**

Remove recurring database traffic from idle Muse maintenance while
preserving authority checks and recovery. Reuse the database work signal
foundation from #15625 without adding tables.

## What Changed

- Register Muse maintenance with the shared delivery coordinator and its
idle admission rules.
- Signal pairing, OAuth attachment and revocation, qualification
changes, and new assignments before transaction writes. The existing
transaction layer waits for outer commit.
- Restore qualification deadlines from persisted bindings. Retry failed
sweeps and unfinished assignments.
- Add PostgreSQL tests for idle quiet, nested commit, rollback,
deadlines, standby, drain, and failure recovery. Verify signals from
actual Muse producers. Preserve startup, newly committed work, and
failed sweep retries across idle drain without SQL polling.
- Document the remaining recovery cadence and sleep limitations.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck`: passed before rebase. Server typechecking also
passed after rebase and the drain fix.
- `pnpm build`: passed before rebase.
- Final change: 33 maintenance, delivery coordinator, and scheduler
tests passed. Maintenance used a fresh disposable PostgreSQL 17
database.
- Muse control-plane tests: 254 passed against the same disposable
database.
- `pnpm test:run`: attempted, then stopped after repeated embedded
PostgreSQL startup failures from this host's semaphore limit.
Native-session, Muse, and AI-connection suites could not create local
clusters. The complete suite runs in CI.
- `git diff --check`: passed.
- Final commit `e106cbf20d`: all CI gates passed, including complete
test suites, E2E, build, production bundle boot, public-install smoke
test, and canary dry run. Greptile and Paperclip source reviews both
rated 5/5, with no unresolved findings.

The focused suites accept `PAPERCLIP_MUSE_MAINTENANCE_TEST_DATABASE_URL`
and `PAPERCLIP_MUSE_CONTROL_TEST_DATABASE_URL`. Use a disposable test
database; fixtures remove test data.

## Risks

- Unfinished assignments retain five-second recovery. This change
removes idle polling, not all Muse polling.
- Signals are process-local. Independent database writers need explicit
integration. Startup recovers persisted state.
- Qualification deadlines depend on the running process. Existing
durable Muse sleep blockers remain unchanged.
- The receiver keeps its batching timer. An empty buffer already makes
no database calls.
- No schema migration or API change.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with code execution and repository tools.
The exact model version is not exposed in this session.

DottaandPaperclip e6dcc6b095 Connect personal Muse through secure native execution and Vault OAuth (#16448)
Add company-scoped Muse native control, OAuth, wake receiver and recovery.

Recheck current authority after waits and before effects or receipt replay. Preserve task-read scope, assignment expiry, independent holds, nonblocking reassignment and truthful cleanup provenance.

Retain source trust on progress comments and verify current Muse V8 authority through real signed-JWT HTTP requests. Preserve the upstream trimmed ordinary authentication lookup.

Refs #16448.

Preserve captured canonical queue recovery and concurrent environment preparation while retaining the scoped Muse V8 exclusion. Normal migration 0354 and existing Muse SQL remain unchanged. Fresh current-head Greptile review is 5/5 with the project-write finding addressed. Required CI and independent technical review gate the merge; maintainer override is reserved for formal approval rules.

Recheck current Muse project-write authority after all receipt/task/run/admission waits, before creation or replay. Real PostgreSQL regressions reproduce four late effects/replays on the old route; the repaired three-file treatment passes 354 cases with no skips, and the scoped server typecheck passes. Ordinary/Dot behavior is preserved.

DottaandPaperclip 51b56706fb fix(grok): verify file completion and recover failed sessions (#16305)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages work and authority for AI agents.
> - Grok Bot runs outside Paperclip and uses authenticated upload grants
for files.
> - Native completion requires a verified file publication receipt.
> - The upload saved the file but did not create that receipt. Real Grok
work could not finish.
> - A failed run also left an assignment that the Stop action could not
fence.
> - This pull request connects verified uploads to normal completion and
repairs that recovery action.
> - The result preserves file integrity and current work-session
authority.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs: #16219, #16274.

**What happened?**

A real Grok Bot saved a task document and CSV. Semantic completion
rejected the CSV because its upload had no verified publication receipt.
After the managed run failed, Stop rejected its remaining assignment as
a changed session. The driver also discarded the remote monitor's known
failure reason.

**Expected behavior**

An authenticated upload of the exact requested bytes can satisfy normal
completion. Stop can fence the remaining assignment of the selected
failed run. An old Stop action cannot stop newer work. Known remote
lease and reconnect errors remain visible without raw diagnostics or
credentials.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Connect an experimental Grok Bot agent and verify its routine.
2. Assign a task that requires a document and a file.
3. Upload the file through its accepted assignment and cite the
attachment in semantic completion.
4. Observe the missing publication receipt error on the previous
implementation.
5. For recovery, select Stop after that run fails but its assignment
remains active.

**Paperclip version or commit**

The live defects were observed after #16274. The current candidate
merges master `739f9e40a4` and is
`26c5b9601d1cb2b8f5bb7fcf730f019523763f5b`.

## What Changed

- Record a server-owned publication receipt in the verified upload
transaction. Bind it to the real native Grok run and exact stored file
metadata.
- Validate external publication against the actual upload and admitted
assignment. Keep existing native and person upload rules.
- Recover the committed receipt after a lost response. Reverify the same
bytes when an older upload lacks proof.
- Hold assignment authority through publication with
grant-before-assignment and task-before-run lock order. Disconnect does
not wait for remote file storage.
- Allow Stop to fence the exact lingering assignment of a terminal run.
Reject stale Stop calls for successor work.
- Preserve only known lease/reconnect failure codes from the remote
monitor. Do not expose raw stderr.
- Extend real Rust, overlapping document/upload and disconnect/upload,
file retry, completion and Stop regressions. Document setup, files and
recovery.

## Verification

- The real Rust Grok regression requests a file, checks an overlapping
native document save, concurrent retries and lost-response recovery,
rejects missing delivery evidence, then uses normal semantic completion
and finalization.
- Focused tests cover person MCP, native file handoff, completion, Stop
and both external driver providers.
- Local repository typecheck and production build pass on the current
candidate. The five focused protocol suites pass (264 tests); all 17
external Runner driver tests pass, with the driver unchanged since the
master merge.
- Token gates and Storybook build pass. Nine existing Grok fixture
journeys pass their browser interaction assertions; the static probe
separately records five fixture API routes returning 404. This is UI
fixture evidence only.
- Full repository coverage passed in CI. The duplicate local `pnpm
test:run` was interrupted after CI completed; its partial log is
retained and is not reported as a local full-suite pass. The earlier
aggregate invocation was interrupted for the second review fix.
- All CI gates pass on `26c5b9601d1cb2b8f5bb7fcf730f019523763f5b`: 55
successful checks and two skipped Storybook jobs (no UI diff). This
includes the complete sharded repository suites, native Runner, release
checks, build and security scans.
- Current-head Greptile is 5/5 with zero unresolved findings. The PR has
no merge conflicts.
- The prior live attempt is failed acceptance evidence. Real Grok
requalification, proactive work, controller restart and active-session
Stop remain release gates. This PR does not claim those passed.

## Risks

- Upload and completion now share a durable run receipt. Lock order and
current assignment authority must remain consistent with native
mutations.
- Publication fails closed if the file, run or grant changes. A retry
must keep the same upload identity and bytes.
- Person connections gain no agent authority. No database migration is
required.
- Known exit diagnostics do not prove global Grok termination. Grok
spending remains unreported.

execution and computer use. The exact deployment model ID and
context-window size are not exposed in this session.

DottaandPaperclip b8ffeb973a feat(runner): add experimental Grok Bot agent participation (#16219)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents that perform work for a company.
> - The shared Runner owns task admission, authority, receipts and
finalization.
> - An existing Grok Bot needs to receive assignments and return results
through that Runner.
> - The Bot also needs governed access when it starts work from its own
conversation.
> - This PR adds agent-purpose MCP access and routine webhook dispatch.
> - It reuses the external-agent Rust Runner and keeps Grok capabilities
explicit.
> - The provider stays experimental until the real-client managed
journeys pass.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Agent or provider**
Grok Bot, distinct from the Grok Build coding runtime in #13882.

**Why this adapter is useful**
Users can assign work to an existing Bot, receive progress, questions,
documents and files in Paperclip, and let the Bot initiate work under
its agent permissions.

**How the agent is invoked**
A webhook-only routine delivers bounded references. Dedicated
named-agent OAuth and MCP provide inbound calls. Setup follows [Grok
routines](https://cursor.com/help/grok-bot/routines) and [custom
plugins](https://cursor.com/help/grok-bot/connect-plugins). The current
desktop app needs its Bot-generated Webhook URL navigation link when
routine-row clicks fail.

The GitHub search found related Grok Build runtime work, but no existing
Grok Bot agent provider. This extends the roadmap’s existing agent,
Runner, governance and artifact foundations.

## What Changed

- Add default-off Grok Bot participation through the shared real Rust
external backend, preserving native provider identity guarantees and
distinguishing session closure from remote termination.
- Bind agent OAuth to company, agent, client, gateway and authorizer;
recheck permissions and task-bound execution authority without
manufacturing a native identity.
- Persist routine configuration, dispatch intents, authenticated
acknowledgement and recovery holds. Store URL/key together in encrypted
secret storage, use guarded public egress, and never automatically
replay ambiguous HTTP delivery.
- Reuse native tools, durable waiting, completion assessment and review.
Add task-bound file grants through existing artifact storage; suppress
proactive echo dispatch and synchronous result wake loops.
- Enforce the current native deliverable work-mode policy at file-ticket
issuance and use. Add operator retries for confirmed rejected wakes,
with retained receipts, stable retry intent and current-authority
checks. Recovery locks bindings before routine rows. Thread Stop
resolves the selected run and its agent.
- Cancel queued and preparing Stop targets before assignment creation,
restore saved setup after a failed request and successful retry, and
publish the Grok provider descriptor schema. Advance the versioned
Copilot source declaration for the shared schema change; its
qualification remains pending.
- Filter task summaries with the shared privacy policy, preserve
feedback admission when wake delivery is blocked, reconcile settled
delivery receipts without restoring work authority, and bind every Stop
control to its displayed run. Recovery records distinguish dispatch
uncertainty from a revoked session.
- Add resumable guided setup, credential replacement, consent,
management, observed work status and stop/recovery controls, plus an
interactive Storybook journey using the production task thread, question
form and report card. Grok’s own apps remain available; Paperclip
workspace and third-party tools are deferred.

## Verification

- Five focused protocol, authorization, person MCP and Runner files: 192
tests pass. The Grok assigned-work case executes the actual Rust Runner,
saves a document, uploads/deduplicates a file and reaches ordinary
finalization.
- Proactive intake/deduplication and renewed-session recovery pass.
These use scripted clients and synthetic storage; they are not
real-provider acceptance.
- Repository typecheck, production build, token gates, map checks and
Storybook build/catalog checks pass. The local full-suite campaign was
stopped after macOS shared-memory exhaustion repeatedly prevented
embedded PostgreSQL startup. No local aggregate pass is claimed. The
first clean-worker CI run identified avatar fixture/configuration, flag
defaults, feature-card ordering and OpenAPI route-coverage gaps; all
four focused regressions pass after correction. Those regressions pass.
The latest clean-worker CI run also found a Copilot source-hash
declaration mismatch after the shared descriptor update; the corrected
declaration passes all 28 integrity tests. The next review corrections
pass 144 rendered UI tests, 21 OpenAPI tests and 82 Runner
contract/integrity/history tests. The latest database fixtures were
blocked at startup by host shared-memory exhaustion; clean-worker CI
must execute their new regressions. Full current-head CI now passes: 54
successful checks and four intentional skips. The database regression
uses the PostgreSQL driver result shape; file-policy, rejected-feedback
and lock-order cases pass on clean workers. Current-head Greptile is 5/5
with no unresolved findings.
- Rendered setup steps and outbound-only verification were walked
through in Storybook. Simulation cannot enable Done without an
authenticated-reply state.
- Actual client OAuth, continued access, reconnect and one routine wake
with an exact chat acknowledgement were observed separately. This
candidate’s live authenticated challenge, assigned/proactive workflows,
Linux managed artifact, restart and cleanup are not yet qualified. The
provider stays disabled by default.
- The separate Cloud ingress change forwards only exact task-bound
upload/download paths and preserves host identity and header stripping.
- Current Cloud policy reserves Test for pre-merge app/harness
experiments; Staging accepts only master-derived revisions. Real-client
qualification needs a supported, authorized deployment target and
remains outstanding.

## Risks

One append-only migration adds routine/dispatch state and extends shared
bindings and file tickets. The unshipped migrations were regenerated
after upstream consumed their original numbers. Rolling back code
retains the durable rows; revoke grants and inspect unknown remote
activity before resuming dispatch. Grok cannot confirm remote
termination, stream its complete transcript or report spending. Plugins
are account-wide and do not isolate credentials between Bots.
Real-client managed acceptance remains required before enabling the
experimental provider.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex based on GPT-6, with reasoning, code execution and
browser/native UI tools. The exact deployment model ID and
context-window size are not exposed by this runtime.

9cc979116e fix(server): stop reporting queries that outlive the database shutdown (#16243)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The server reports unexpected route errors to Sentry through the
shared error handler.
> - An orderly shutdown drains the HTTP listener, and then it ends the
database pool.
> - `server.close()` completes when the sockets close. A route handler
whose client disconnected, or whose socket the drain timeout closed, can
still run.
> - The next query of that handler fails with postgres.js
`CONNECTION_ENDED`, because this process ended the pool. The error
handler reports this as a 500 crash.
> - This pull request marks the pool as closing just before it ends. The
error handler then skips the error sinks for that one error code during
shutdown.
> - Public MCP calls run in their own internal Express app, so the flag
is also shared with that app.
> - The benefit is that a normal restart does not create false Sentry
crash reports. Real errors are still reported.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

No public GitHub issue exists. This is the bug description.

**What happened?**

A staging server restarted. During the restart, `GET
/api/companies/:companyId/heartbeat-runs` failed in the per-row run
privacy check (`canActorReadHeartbeatRun`). The error was `Failed query:
select "id" from "issues" ...`. Its cause was `write CONNECTION_ENDED
<host>:5432`. postgres.js raises this code only for a query that starts
after the process called `sql.end()`. The error handler sent the error
to Sentry as a crash.

**Expected behavior**

A query that runs after the shutdown ends the pool is an expected part
of the shutdown. The server must not report it as a crash. If the
response is still open, the server answers `503`. The server must
continue to report all other errors.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Start the server, and send a slow request (for example, a large
heartbeat run list).
2. Close the client connection, or let the 5 second drain timeout close
it, while the handler still runs.
3. Send SIGTERM. The shutdown drains HTTP and ends the pool.
4. The handler's next query fails with `CONNECTION_ENDED`. Before this
change, the error goes to Sentry.

## What Changed

- `server/src/database-retry.ts`: Add `isEndedDbPoolError`. It finds the
postgres.js `CONNECTION_ENDED` code anywhere in the error `cause` chain.
`isTransientDbConnectionError` now uses the same chain walk. Its
behavior does not change.
- `server/src/index.ts`: The orderly shutdown sets
`app.locals.paperclipDatabaseClosing = true` immediately before it ends
the database pools.
- `server/src/middleware/error-handler.ts`: When the flag is set and the
error is `CONNECTION_ENDED`, the handler answers `503 { error: "Server
is shutting down" }`, or it ends the response if the headers are already
sent. It does not call Sentry or crash telemetry. This follows the
existing client-abort (`ECONNRESET`) case.
- `server/src/services/public-mcp/capabilities.ts` and
`server/src/app.ts`: `createMcpApiDispatch` takes the main app's locals.
Each per-call dispatch app reads `paperclipDatabaseClosing` through a
live getter, so a public MCP call that outlives the pool is handled the
same way (Greptile review finding).
- `server/src/__tests__/error-handler.test.ts`: Add tests for the 503
path, the headers-sent path, `CONNECTION_ENDED` outside shutdown (still
reported), and `CONNECTION_CLOSED` during shutdown (still reported).
- `server/src/__tests__/public-mcp-dispatch-shutdown.test.ts`: Send an
ended-pool error through the real MCP dispatch, both during shutdown
(503, not reported) and outside shutdown (reported).

## Verification

- `cd server && vitest run
src/__tests__/public-mcp-dispatch-shutdown.test.ts
src/__tests__/error-handler.test.ts
src/__tests__/cloud-tenant-transient-db-retry.test.ts`: 25 tests pass.
- With only the error-handler change reverted, the two new error-handler
shutdown tests fail. With only the dispatch change reverted, the MCP
shutdown test fails. The negative-control tests pass in both cases.
- I could not run the full `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm test:run`, and
`pnpm build` locally, or `public-mcp.test.ts`, which needs built
workspace packages. The sandbox has a 4 GB memory limit. CI runs the
full gates.

## Risks

- Low risk. The skip applies only to `CONNECTION_ENDED`, and only after
the shutdown starts to end the pools. postgres.js raises that code only
for a pool that this process ended. Network and database failures
(`CONNECTION_CLOSED`, `CONNECTION_DESTROYED`, and others) are still
reported.
- `CONNECTION_ENDED` outside shutdown (for example, a dedicated client
used after it ended) is still reported as a crash.
- The MCP dispatch app gets only the shutdown flag from the main app's
locals. It does not get any other locals.
- No schema, API contract, or UI change.

DottaandPaperclip a7dd5284b5 feat: add company fast-response acknowledgements (#15748)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Human messages start agent work through task, chat, and
external-channel intake.
> - Agent startup can delay the first visible response.
> - A small direct model call can acknowledge the request while normal
work starts.
> - This response must remain separate from evidence that the agent
answered or completed work.
> - This pull request adds optional company-wide fast responses with
durable receipts, access checks, and cost accounting.
> - Users receive prompt acknowledgement without changing the agent
execution path.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Cross-cutting: database, shared contracts, server orchestration,
connections, and UI.

**Problem or motivation**

Users can wait for an agent to start before they receive a contextual
response. Generic progress messages do not confirm what the user asked.
An acknowledgement must not falsely complete work or satisfy an
unanswered turn.

**Proposed solution**

Add a disabled-by-default experimental fast-response model using an
existing shared API connection. Generate one short acknowledgement for
each accepted human turn. Use the existing agent identity and external
publication outboxes. Retain platform provenance and account for the
inference independently.

**Alternatives considered**

Running the acknowledgement through the agent runtime adds startup
latency. Restricting implementation to OpenRouter leaves other existing
API connections unsupported. This change supports all existing API
connections and uses OpenRouter for live verification.

**Roadmap alignment**

This extends existing agent communication and connection settings.
ROADMAP.md and open pull requests were checked. No duplicate
fast-response implementation was found. The maintainer supplied the
feature plan directly.

## What Changed

- Add Experimental fast responses to instance settings. Keep the feature
off by default. Enforce the flag at intake, dispatch, and publication.
- Move Decision model and Fast response setup to company Settings →
Connections when the experiment is enabled. Place Connections below
Environments. Separate the model sections with clear headings and a
divider. Keep Decision model in General when the experiment is off.
Route Costs setup links to the available settings page.
- Make the acknowledgement prompt a multiline template string. Ask for a
brief, positive response in the user’s language.

- Add settings, connection/model selection, sponsorship, fixed-sample
testing, and Costs history.
- Add a Vercel AI SDK text service for existing native, routed, Bedrock,
and local API connections.
- Add durable per-turn requests, a bounded worker, a three-second
admission deadline, and one inference attempt.
- Integrate task creation, task and agent chat, steering, queued
follow-ups, experimental board chat, shared chat intake, and email.
- Preserve receipt provenance and exclude receipts from completion,
recovery, interaction resolution, and agent wakeups.
- Recheck authorization, source validity, real replies, budgets, and
destination binding before publication. Preserve accounting for
suppressed or uncertain outcomes.
- Add provider contracts, database race tests, channel outbox tests, UI
tests, Stories, and documentation. Keep decision-model execution
unchanged.

## Verification

- Local `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm build`, and UI token gates pass after
rebase. The UI typecheck and build also pass after the final navigation
fixes. All 37 focused navigation tests pass. The first full local `pnpm
test:run` invocation reported seven chat failures. All seven passed in
isolated reruns after fixture updates and host cleanup. This invocation
was stopped after the full final-head CI suite passed.
- Initial local database tests hit macOS shared-memory exhaustion. A
diagnostic confirmed `shmget: No space left on device` with the system
limit of 32 IDs. Three abandoned, unattached PostgreSQL IPC headers were
reclaimed. The isolated rerun passed all 31 fast-response and channel
tests. The two additional Slack regression cases also passed in a
separate rerun. No active database was stopped.
- UI token gates pass. Provider contract tests cover all supported API
connection types. Fast-response tests cover uniqueness, authorization,
budgets, expiry, cancellation, restart, real-reply races, and the
experimental flag.
- The test drive verified that disabling the experiment hides
Connections and redirects its direct URL. Enabling it restores the saved
OpenRouter setup. After restart on the final commit, the OpenRouter
settings sample returned “Sure, I’ll take care of fixing the border
around the settings panel.” in 428 ms. It used 260 input and 31 output
tokens and recorded $0.0000576 in reported cost.
- Earlier live OpenRouter verification produced a receipt in 1.013
seconds for a new task. The real agent then supplied its substantive
answer. A separate settings test took 1.34 seconds, used 246 input and
23 output tokens, and recorded $0.0000361.
- Live Slack verification on final commit
`24016fa525961ebc7a4acffdc5019ce123970549` passed for a fresh initial
task and a follow-up in a disposable bot DM. The initial acknowledgement
appeared 2.405 seconds after the Slack message and 1.413 seconds after
durable acceptance; the follow-up appeared in 2.322 seconds and 1.160
seconds respectively. The recorded generation/settlement durations were
898 ms and 697 ms. The initial call used 291 input / 39 output tokens
and cost $0.00006705; the follow-up used 281 / 47 and cost $0.00007035.
- The Slack acknowledgements retained the assigned agent identity and
`origin: fast_response`, source-turn references, and no fabricated run
ID. A status snapshot after the initial receipt showed the task still
`in_progress` with its real execution run. The agent then read the CSV
fixture and correctly reported two ready items, two blockers, and their
owners. Both replies stayed in the originating DM, and no duplicate
generic working message followed the delivered contextual
acknowledgements. The `new` command started a fresh conversation session
without generating a fast response.
- An earlier eligible Slack turn generated a response but suppressed
publication. Its reported cost was retained, generic progress remained,
and the real agent completed the requested result. This is recorded
separately from the two delivered acknowledgements; the history did not
expose a precise suppression reason.
- Slack verification used real signed provider events, the existing
intake/publication paths, and a user-approved temporary webhook-only
HTTPS tunnel. Subscriptions were limited to direct-message events. The
test bot was paused and the tunnel stopped afterward. Live
channel/group-thread and GitHub journeys remain unverified; their mocked
tests cover intake, destination binding, publication, and continued
underlying work.
- Greptile reviewed final commit
`24016fa525961ebc7a4acffdc5019ce123970549` at 5/5. Both new review
findings are fixed and all threads are resolved. [Final-head CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38060015730)
passed. This includes grouped server/chat/workspace tests, serialized
suites, runner checks, browser journeys, typecheck, build, release
registry, policy, and the canary dry run.
- Manual check: enable Experimental fast responses. Open company
Settings → Connections. Select a shared API connection and model. Save
and use Test response. Submit a task message and confirm that its
receipt does not complete the task.

## Risks

- The migration adds receipt and configuration tables plus accounting
references. It uses idempotent statements and follows the current
migration sequence.
- A slow provider, authorization change, or real-agent reply can
suppress an acknowledgement. Existing progress feedback remains
available.
- Unknown provider billing retains a reservation until reconciliation.
External deliveries with uncertain outcomes must not be blindly
repeated.
- Live Slack initial-task and follow-up DM journeys pass. Live Slack
channel/group-thread and GitHub journeys remain unverified. The PR
remains a draft and records these gaps. Final-head repository CI and
automated review pass.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with reasoning, repository tools, code
execution, and browser interaction. The runtime does not expose an exact
model snapshot ID or context-window size; these are not asserted.

DottaandPaperclip c5f7713dd4 fix: clarify native tool use for external agents (#15734)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - External agents keep their own tools and app connections.
> - The Paperclip assignment catalog controls the Paperclip bridge.
> - Dot treated a qualification test restriction as a rule for later
work.
> - Existing prompts did not clearly separate these two tool sources.
> - This pull request tells agents to use their own capabilities and
return results to Paperclip.
> - The benefit is that a missing Paperclip app does not block an
available native capability.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Related work: #15722 and #15691. I searched open PRs for Dot tool
guidance and found no duplicate.

**What happened?**
After a qualification test, Dot refused a Slack request because the test
Paperclip agent had no assigned Slack app. Dot already had a working
Slack connection in ChatGPT. It carried the test's plugin restriction
into a later task message.

**Expected behavior**
An external agent uses its own available tools, apps, plugins, skills,
and capabilities to complete the current request. It then returns the
result through Paperclip's task reporting and completion tools. The
assignment catalog limits Paperclip calls. It does not disable the
agent's native tools.

**Steps to reproduce**
1. Connect a Dot that has a native Slack connection.
2. Complete a Paperclip qualification task with a restriction scoped to
that test.
3. Send a later task message that requires Slack.
4. Observe that Dot can mistake the Paperclip catalog for its full tool
inventory.

**Deployment mode**
Observed on Cloud staging with the Dot Runner.

## What Changed

- Add shared tool-use guidance for external-agent onboarding and Dot
setup.
- Include it in the server onboarding document, pairing response, event
instructions, and capability response.
- Clarify the tool descriptions on both Dot bridge paths.
- Include the same guidance in each Dot Runner assignment without adding
a shared-package dependency to the standalone Runner.
- Document native tool use and the scope of test restrictions.

## Verification

- The 49 relevant onboarding, Dot invitation, and Runner context tests
passed. The final UI run passed 29 tests. The updated plain-text
renderer run passed all 4 tests.
- Full workspace typecheck, full workspace build, and design token gates
passed. All current-head CI gates passed, including full tests, Runner
verification, and browser E2E. Greptile is 5/5 on the exact final
commit, and the one review finding is resolved.
- The real Dot received the standing correction and confirmed that it
will use its relevant tools and connections, return results through
Paperclip, and stop carrying the test restriction forward.
- Extended the existing plain-text renderer test to check native Slack
access, qualification-test scope, and the Paperclip denial boundary.
This covers agents that receive only the onboarding.txt URL.
- The full Vitest suite passed in CI. The earlier local Cloud
qualification run encountered failures in unchanged suites; this
follow-up uses focused local tests for the instruction changes.

## Risks

This changes instructions, not access checks. Native tools retain their
own permissions and approval requirements. Paperclip operations remain
scoped to the authorized company, agent, and task. Agents must not use
another connection or identity to bypass a denial. There is no database
migration or new permission grant.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. Used reasoning, repository tools, and
browser control. The runtime does not expose a more specific model ID or
context window size.

DottaandPaperclip 556daf9a99 feat(dot): run cloud assignments in managed sandboxes (#15691)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages agents and governs their work.
> - The Runner owns execution and task authority.
> - Dot executes at OpenAI and uses Paperclip through MCP.
> - Dot previously required a self-hosted controller.
> - Cloud must admit Dot work in a managed sandbox and keep protocol
traffic in the tenant.
> - This pull request adds managed Dot execution and dedicated pairing
routes.
> - The same Runner path can later host sandboxed workspace tools.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Agent or provider**

OpenAI Dot, through the existing dedicated MCP adapter. Related changes:
#15402, #15414, and #15581.

**Why this adapter is useful**

Cloud users need to assign work to Dot and let Dot request work while
idle. Neither path should execute agent commands on the control-plane
host or require an idle sandbox.

**How the agent is invoked**

The tenant serves OAuth, signed mailbox events, and scoped tools. Normal
admission creates a managed sandbox for each assignment. A verified Rust
Runner owns that assignment and relays its tools and results.

## What Changed

- Enable the external-agent invitation in Cloud behind the standalone
Dot flag.
- Launch Dot through the existing managed process launcher and
authenticated PRP transport.
- Verify the artifact digest and Dot capability before dispatch. Read
provider checkpoints from the execution target for recovery.
- Reject local execution in Cloud and reject managed workspace access
for this release.
- Add dedicated public Dot pairing aliases. Preserve the personal
assistant consent paths.
- Keep Dot events in the tenant when a personal Cloud broker is
configured.
- Use the app-configured heartbeat for Dot-initiated work. Report
terminal admission failures and fence stranded offers before new
admission.
- Offer normal comments through the active assignment's mailbox. Keep
their wakes deferred until a successful history receipt contains the
exact IDs; preserve unread comments through finish, batching and
recovery without replaying consumed input.
- Require a sandbox process fingerprint before dispatch and allow a
bounded five-minute controller reconnect gap. Preserve remote process
birth without inspecting a colliding controller PID.
- Recognize authenticated remote shutdown receipts even without an OS
exit code.
- Document dedicated pairing aliases and teach route coverage to inspect
literal path arrays.
- Add opt-in private Daytona qualification and focused contract tests.

## Verification

- Workspace typecheck, production build, and UI token gates passed.
- Focused onboarding, OAuth, managed environment, artifact metadata, and
terminal-fence tests passed. One environment-test timeout passed on an
isolated repeat.
- A private Daytona fixture passed with the real Rust Runner, signed
readiness, assigned app tools, document writes, duplicate receipts,
authority fences, completion, and sandbox deletion.
- A real OpenAI Dot completed both an operator-assigned task and a
Dot-initiated task in managed Daytona sandboxes. Both leases were
released.
- A real accepted Dot assignment survived a controller gap longer than
one minute with the same sandbox process, Runner, session, and
assignment. Dot consumed the normal task-comment follow-up and completed
exactly once; the lease was released.
- A real cancellation fenced an accepted assignment, released its lease,
and received Dot's acknowledgement without claiming a global provider
stop.
- Final local checks: 74 Dot execution, OAuth onboarding and API
contract tests after integrating the current agent-lifecycle changes, 9
real Rust driver tests, 21 remote-runtime tests plus the 3
detached-process cleanup tests, and 17 lifecycle tests passed. The final
live Daytona fixture passed and deleted its sandbox.
- A final real Dot follow-up stayed pending until its exact comment
appeared in a successful history receipt. Dot completed the original
managed assignment once; its lease was released.
- The broad local suite crossed a rebase and was stopped; its failures
are not a qualification of this final source. Focused repeats passed.
The final head passed all CI gates: workspace types, build, general and
serialized test suites, Rust and Runner verification, all browser
shards, and the canary dry run. Greptile is 5/5 with both findings
resolved.

## Risks

- Deploy the tenant app with its current Linux Runner artifact and the
corresponding front-door protocol routes together.
- This branch has not been deployed to a Cloud tenant. A deployed tenant
still needs an OAuth and assignment smoke test.
- Dot provider usage and cost are unmetered. Revocation fences Paperclip
tools and does not prove a global OpenAI stop.
- Missing or changed recovery identity fails closed. No replacement Dot
thread is invented.
- No schema migration is added. Managed Dot workspace access remains
unavailable.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with reasoning, tool use, code execution,
and browser testing. The exact runtime model identifier and
context-window size are not exposed in this session.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 2dd9811e8b Own agent hiring and termination in a lifecycle module (#15631)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - Agent creation, approval, pause, and termination change whether an
agent can work.
> - These changes currently use separate service and database paths.
> - Some agents need setup after their record exists and before their
harness can run.
> - This PR adds one module that owns those state changes and their
transactions.
> - The module records progress and retries incomplete work after a
server restart.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation**

A hire can become active before its execution environment is ready.
Direct agent state writes also bypass one common lifecycle boundary.
Termination does not have a durable step for resource cleanup.

**Proposed solution**

Use agent lifecycle commands for hiring, approval, pause, resume, and
termination. Keep proposed hires pending until approval. Prepare each
approved hire, test its saved harness configuration, and then permit
work. Wait for required plugin work before completing a step.

**Alternatives considered**

A general database commit hook would expose transaction details to
callers. A timer alone would delay each new hire. This module owns each
command transaction and starts its worker after commit. A periodic scan
recovers work after a process stops.

**Roadmap alignment**

This change adds the lifecycle boundary for the existing agent and
plugin systems. It does not add a user interface or a provider
implementation. It replaces the lifecycle delivery approach in #15391.
Related proposals include #11475 and #13099; this change does not add
their external executor protocols.

## What Changed

- Add durable approval, preparation, verification, pause, resume, stop,
and cleanup states.
- Keep agent creation, lifecycle state, configuration writes, and agent
record deletion behind `modules/agent-lifecycle`. Keep validation,
credential rules, reads, onboarding, invitations, general approvals, and
company data deletion in their services.
- Commit a hire before the remaining onboarding or invitation work.
Serialize requests with the existing dedicated database connection
helper. Reuse the hire after a failed attempt.
- Keep accepted work in the run queue during setup. Require execution
and cleanup evidence before completing pause or termination.
- Retain the original credential owner when approving migrated hires.
- Start lifecycle work after each command commits. Use database leases
and revision checks for retries and late results.
- Add a generic required plugin method and capability. Store the
required plugin IDs for each agent. Track host and plugin completion
separately.
- Keep harness verification and credential rules in services. Supply
their results to lifecycle through explicit ports. Reject failed logins
and incomplete probes.
- Remove reverse imports from lifecycle adapters into services. Share
record queries and validation below both layers.
- Use one hire decision path for agent IDs and approval IDs. Resolve the
approval and agent change in one transaction. Expose policy
reconciliation on the command object.
- Save configuration and verification invalidation through one module
operation. Ordinary commands own their transaction. Restrict the shared
transaction integration to its listed callers. Reject identity, company,
accounting, timestamp, and unknown fields.
- Require completed termination before deleting agent records. The
company deletion service calls the module through a separate deletion
interface.
- Save an approved secret before applying its agent binding. A failed
binding leaves the secret approved. A retry reuses it.
- Remove old permission and metadata export files. Move hire
configuration rules out of lifecycle persistence.
- Report failed worker steps and scans with operation context and known
error codes. Omit provider messages, stacks, and configuration values.
Document ordinary application use and extension rules.
- Recover expired native owners only after execution stops. Retry
cleanup of failed retained leases. Wait for setup in the live smoke
script.
- Keep manual, budget, and company pause reasons separate. Guard
execution status writes with the ready state.
- Add a migration, boundary checks, regression tests, and a lifecycle
guide. Keep the current UI.
- Limit periodic policy checks to 100 eligible agents per minute.
Continue from the last agent ID. Exclude pending hires and agents in
termination or a final state. Keep explicit company and budget updates
immediate.

## Verification

- Latest head `ccc3c86b0` aligns the shared status update schema with
the PATCH route. All 15 shared tests, 104 server route/OpenAPI tests, 2
CLI tests, and shared/server/CLI TypeScript checks pass. The Greptile
comment is fixed. CI is running; no new Apex review was requested for
this small fix.

- Rebase `75708ac94` rebases onto master at `2eb5187e4`. The backup test
uses the shared 90-second timeout from master; the older timeout commit
was removed. The affected backup test passes.
- Agent budget edits now pass the target agent ID through enforcement.
All 50 affected tests, server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass.
Both configuration update paths have regression coverage. CI is running
on the latest head. No new Apex review was requested for these small
fixes.

- Rebase `9b568666a` preserves the run-control extraction and
delivery-work startup changes from master. All 559 affected tests,
server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass. CI and Apex review are
running on the final head.
- The policy scan fix passes 56 lifecycle and diagnostic tests, 24
policy and caller tests, and 11 boundary tests. A regression test checks
the page limit, interval, excluded states, and cursor wraparound.

- Rebase `fd4698750` passes all 611 tests in eight affected lifecycle,
route, and heartbeat suites. Server TypeScript and all 11 module
boundary tests pass. The company deletion rollback and concurrent hire
tests are included.

- Follow-up `00aac7646` fixes the failed decision deletion test and the
public update schema. All 126 affected server tests, 8 shared tests, 2
CLI tests, and 11 boundary tests pass. Shared, server, CLI, and UI
TypeScript checks pass.

- Server TypeScript passes: `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc
--noEmit`.
- All 11 boundary tests pass: `node --test
scripts/check-module-boundaries.test.mjs`. The repository boundary scan
also passes.
- All 68 lifecycle, failure diagnostic, and harness verification tests
pass. Tests reject forbidden fields through the root command, combined
transition command, and restricted transaction integration. They also
check invalid fields returned by configuration preparation.
- Failure tests cover host work, plugin work, claims, renewals,
deferrals, and scans. Log tests check known error codes and exclusion of
private error contents.
- All 355 tests in 10 existing caller suites pass. These tests cover
secret approval, pairing, pending hires, credentials, company import,
built-in agents, managed agents, instructions, and skills.
- The branch is rebased onto `origin/master` at `2eb5187e4`. The queue
guards and cancellation lock fix use the extracted heartbeat queue.
Agent cancellation uses the extracted run-control file. The source diff
scan found no secrets or private URLs.
- Earlier checks cover approval retries, rollback, late verification
results, policy holds, deletion rollback, concurrent company deletion,
and queue admission during setup.
- Before the rebase, CI passed on `00aac7646` and Greptile Apex rated it
5/5 with no open comments. CI and a new Apex review are pending for the
rebased commit. The branch has no merge conflicts.
- The full local build and native Dot suite were not run. The host has
no Cargo. No live provider test was run.

## Risks

- Background policy recovery takes more than one minute when more than
100 agents are eligible. Explicit company and budget updates still
reconcile immediately.

- The restricted configuration integration keeps an agent reference and
its dependent records in one transaction. It cannot change a budget or
invoke a lifecycle transition. A periodic scan starts pending setup
after that transaction commits.
- Secret approval and binding use separate transactions. A failed
binding can leave an approved secret with no agent binding.
- New approved hires remain unavailable until setup and verification
complete. Existing clients see `paused` during these steps. This PR does
not change the UI.
- Migration `0320_daily_onslaught.sql` maps existing statuses and pause
reasons. It does not create external resources or claim that an existing
harness passed verification.
- Use a coordinated server update for this migration. Older server
versions can write legacy status without the new lifecycle checks.
- A failed onboarding or invitation request can leave a committed hire.
A retry reuses that hire and completes the remaining records.
- Deletion requires completed termination. Company deletion can require
another request while cleanup is pending.
- Required plugins must make repeated calls safe and reject older
revisions. A disabled or removed required plugin blocks completion until
it is restored.
- A new hire can run a second harness test after the existing UI test.
Some adapters can charge for this test.
- No live provider test was run. Provider implementation and resource
backfill remain separate work.

DottaandPaperclip 57e977be72 feat: integrate Pi 1.0 into the experimental Runner (#14921)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - The experimental Runner owns provider processes and durable
sessions.
> - Pi needs working task execution and human controls.
> - The five-PR stack must preserve changes already on master.
> - Each layer now carries the complete integrated source for a safe
sequential fallback.
> - This PR belongs to native GitHub stack #15602, ending at #14956.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #14436, #14631, #14743 and #14956.

Ship Pi 1.0 through the experimental Paperclip Runner. The five PRs are
#14921, #14922, #14923, #14924 and #14956. The user authorized the
complete merge after checks pass. Existing `pi_local` execution is
unchanged. Accounting and wider provider/platform qualification remain
deferred.

## What Changed

- Recover missing final replies after workspace finalization changes
owners, using accepted-turn evidence without rerunning work or granting
external-chat publication.
- Preserve the admitted Pi instruction root across warm runs, while
retaining changed-root rejection.
- Give Pi a bounded 15-second default shutdown grace so stop, drain
acknowledgement and durable suspension can complete. Explicit deadlines
and other providers retain their existing behavior.
- Integrate the Pi 1.0 runtime and master contracts.
- Use Pi profile 22. Preserve explicit caller-selected models and exact
native thinking levels. Keep Pi's wrapper, helper, extension and
question/control behavior unchanged from the qualified profile-19
runtime.
- Preserve master's Dot lifecycle and consent fields, configured task
environment, status guards and current Codex/Claude dependency versions.
Cursor stays qualified. Copilot stays pending; profile 17 binds the
changed shared protocol validation sources.
- Exclude general AWS IAM credentials from Pi static/custom provider
bindings and selected task projections; preserve the provider-scoped
Bedrock bearer key. Profile 21 is retained as historical provenance.
Rust and cloud install probes use the current declaration.
- Patch bundled brace-expansion 5.0.9 to the exact official 5.0.12
payload. Pin the patch and complete runtime closures. Include the patch
in normal installed setup tooling. Keep the upstream Pi shrinkwrap as
provenance and permit only this exact security correction.
- Include current attestation files in the Docker build context. Keep
the repository lockfile unchanged from master. CI and private image
builds resolve manifest changes before their frozen installation.

## Verification

- Full local `pnpm -r typecheck` passes, including Runner Rust, server
and UI. Focused integration checks pass: 194 Runner
admission/environment tests, 63 profile/credential tests with one
expected skip, 152 Dot/UI configuration tests, and Pi transcript/notice
tests.
- Full local `pnpm build` passes on the final source.
- Fresh final-source checks pass: all 698 Rust workspace tests (32
binaries), 156 credential/profile/controller tests with one expected
skip, Runner TypeScript typecheck, and 20 package/setup/sandbox tests.
- The profile-21 Pi materializer passes on the native host with the
official pinned Node 24.21.0 and its npm. It verifies all 150 locked
packages, the patched dependency and the exact closure. Setup/package
bundle tests and UI token gates pass.
- The old hashes were reproduced for all three supported targets before
calculating the patched graph. New closure hashes are darwin-arm64

Independent native platform execution is separate from graph identity
reproduction.
- Historical cloud qualification remains unchanged: all seven core cases
pass on shipping source `10dc43c9ec65d88c2f782d62afb296d09494f215`,

and accepted Sonnet 4.6/low fixture. All 215 canonical files and all
seven cleanup checks pass independent verification. These are profile-19
results and are not relabeled as fresh profile-22 runs.

plan](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/codex/pi-production-readiness/doc/plans/2026-10-02-pi-production-readiness.md)
preserves campaign and failed-attempt provenance.
- Merge only after every PR's current-head CI and fresh review pass.
Linux CI covers the full suites, build and browser tests. The local
embedded Postgres API-authority suite cannot start on this macOS/Node 26
host, so Linux CI must confirm that suite.

### Fresh profile-22 core qualification — 2026-10-08

All seven accepted core cases pass canonically on Pi profile 22, with
`openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6` and native-confirmed low
thinking. This model is a fixture; production accepts the caller's
explicit Pi provider/model.

Runtime/install source: `3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401`.
Frozen accepted harness: `1a4408a48cfb5a1f094a311141c257c92cd7a893`.
Immutable cloud image:

Pi digest:

[Hosted Linux image and clean-install
verification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868328023)
passes, including all 20 source-bound archives, normal CLI/Pi setup,
companion import and the production pack reader. This exact installation
source includes the latest master integration and the corrected Pi warm
instruction-root fence. Full local typecheck/build and current-head
hosted CI verify the final stack. All 13 focused real-root regressions
pass. The full local executor suite passed 662 tests; 15 database tests
could not start the Mac embedded PostgreSQL service. Hosted Linux CI
passes the full required verification and E2E checks. These fresh
results keep their own source identity; profile-19 results remain
historical.

All 215 canonical files (28714587 bytes) are independently
hash-verified. All seven cleanup grades pass, with no owned runtime
process or temporary root after each case. Automatic retries are zero.
The owned cloud host stopped normally after retention. The prior
profile-22 warm attempt remains failed and separately retained: archive
SHA-256
`1e54eba5ec72b50cee1534b23d1d1d4f21a090006b8a64501ba70db972abfde5`. Its
original canonical classification is preserved. Diagnosis reproduced a
product bug comparing an agent-files root against an unset
checkpoint-only field. The fix stores the admitted physical root
separately from the adopted per-run collection capability. The real-root
regression fails before the fix and passes afterward, including
rejection of a changed physical root. Fixture, grader, model and all
seven accepted case IDs are unchanged; this fresh campaign tests
final-reply publication after file registration first. The intermediate
restart attempt also remains failed and retained: archive SHA-256
`5dcaefdf1d17cf4cd54fd4cf810f45e736667392339b8ce7caf08bb4e225277f`. Its
original canonical classification is preserved. Pi resumed, wrote the
verified answer and completed its task; exact runner suspension was
proven, but idle stop consumed about 5.2s and left under 3s for the
drain acknowledgement. The Pi-only default shutdown grace is now 15s,
preserving a full 5s drain round trip and a finite suspension reserve.
Explicit caller deadlines, other provider defaults, literal drain
receipts and exact suspension identity checks remain unchanged. The
timing regression fails before this correction and passes afterward; all
18 focused settlement tests and Runner typecheck pass. The final-source
file attempt is also preserved as failed (`candidate_failure`), archive
SHA-256
`db6767b6773ea618997927ac77bdb005a5ac81492c7b9c0ffbc900449f829bc9`.
Native edit, validation, exact downloadable artifact and Done/succeeded
all passed, and the exact final reply was durably recorded. A workspace
recovery owner completed before the live heartbeat reached presentation,
leaving that reply absent from task chat. Recovery now materializes only
a completed final reply from the accepted turn of an ordinary internal
Done task, preserving issue/run/contract binding, suppression,
external-chat authorization and same-run deduplication. The database
regression covers the generated file-preparation receipt, suppression,
unapproved external continuation and replay. Server typecheck and all 49
response-selection tests pass; hosted Linux verifies the database
regression because embedded PostgreSQL cannot start on this Mac.

The delayed-final-answer database regression passes on [the final
root-source Linux server
shard](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868262553/job/113628594152),
alongside 1,108 passing tests. The first root Runner shard had one
unchanged durable-resume test exceed its 5-second timeout; the identical
top-source shard and the isolated exact test passed. One rerun of that
failed job and its required aggregate passed without source or test
changes. The original failed job log and the single-rerun receipt remain
retained.

### October 9 merge verification

Current merge head: `5a8fe63512a7166aaef5cf50065a25008aa8b44b`. All
current-head checks pass, including `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`;
exact-head Greptile review is 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Current
master conflicts are resolved. The user authorized the maintainer
override of the code-owner review gate after these checks. The seven
retained live core cases remain bound to source
`3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401` and its recorded cloud image.

## Risks

- The security correction changes the dependency closure and profile
identity. Old sessions must reopen on the new profile. Exact identities
and credential bindings fail closed.
- The runner remains experimental and requires explicit selection.
Legacy Pi Local is unchanged. Caller model IDs pass through; the E2E
model is a fixture.
- Accounting and the broad platform/provider matrix remain deferred.
This merge does not publish a release or deploy a service.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex assisted with reasoning, repository
inspection, editing and tool use. The exact serving ID and context
window are not exposed in this session. Final live qualification uses Pi
1.0.0 with `openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6` and native-confirmed
low thinking.

DottaandPaperclip dd777f4b73 feat(dot): complete onboarding and expand governed Runner capabilities (#15414)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents, their work, and their permissions.
> - Paperclip Runner supplies the same admitted tool authority to each
provider.
> - The Dot provider in #15402 needs reliable onboarding and useful
agent capabilities.
> - An idle Dot could not start work, assign a human, read skills, or
produce a workspace artifact.
> - Pairing also relied on a second configuration save before ordinary
admission could work.
> - This pull request adds governed idle admission and shared Runner
tools, and completes pairing atomically.
> - Operators can test Dot with fresh data while keeping normal company,
approval, budget, and run ownership checks.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Paperclip Runner, dedicated Dot MCP access, OAuth onboarding,
experimental settings, and empty worktree startup. This PR builds on
merged provider PR #15402. It reuses the merged MCP gateway from #14846
and assistant connection work from #14933 and #15380.

**Problem or motivation**

An idle Dot could see assignments but could not act on a conversation
request until someone created a task first. Its Runner catalog could not
assign tasks to humans or read pinned skills and workspace files.
First-time OAuth discovery and pairing also needed browser fixes, and a
completed pairing did not persist its binding reference on the agent.

**Proposed solution**

Keep Dot within the existing Runner. Admit a visible agent-authored
intake task for idle requests. Add people, human assignment, cross-task,
skill, and optional sandbox workspace tools through shared authority.
Relay assigned app calls through the configured MCP gateway. Add lease
renewal and follow-up references. Save pairing and its configuration
revision atomically. Show prerequisites and provide a complete copy
prompt.

**Roadmap alignment**

This extends the experimental provider in #15402. It uses the existing
governed gateway, task model, skills, artifact path, and native Runner.
It adds no separate execution subsystem.

## What Changed

- Add a standalone OpenAI Dot agent choice with an independent
experimental opt-in. It works with the general Runner option off.
Require Assistant connections (MCP), authenticated sign-in, and public
HTTPS for pairing.
- Use Dot’s own option for company package import. Allow an unpaired Dot
configuration to save after external billing acknowledgement; task
admission still requires pairing. Prepare the shared dev binary for
Dot-only opt-in.
- Label saved Dot agents as OpenAI Dot. Use prerequisite-check copy in
setup and runtime configuration.
- Route Dot creation directly to pairing after explicit external billing
acknowledgement. Hide local CLI, model, and harness setup for Dot.
Preserve the shared Runner implementation and canonical API type. Other
Runner providers still require their general opt-in.
- Add an empty worktree option with fresh signing keys and no production
data copy.
- Fix public-client OAuth negotiation, discovery compatibility, and
optional separate browser authorization origin.
- Add one-use pairing consent preview, clear copied setup instructions,
and atomic binding persistence and cleanup.
- Add idle request admission with stable request IDs and normal
scheduling, permissions, budgets, and task ownership.
- Add identity and people discovery, human task assignment and
reassignment, and authorized cross-task comments and documents.
- Read assigned skill files from pinned manifests. Relay assigned app
calls through the merged gateway without exposing credentials.
- Add an off-by-default workspace bridge. Constrain paths and writes.
Run commands in a deny-by-default OS sandbox with no network or injected
credentials. Reserve mutations before effects and never blindly repeat
uncertain work.
- Add rolling lease renewal, task pagination, bounded operation limits,
and deduplicated follow-up references without comment bodies in
webhooks.
- Add an off-by-default attachment reading setting. Restrict reads to
files on the current assigned task. Verify size and hash, cache bounded
verified copies per run, paginate text or binary bytes, and recheck live
authority before returning.
- Keep file grants operator-owned. Reject agent self-grants across
configuration routes. Preserve attachment consent in create/import
forms. Close generic API file bypasses while retaining current-run
response snapshots and permitted uploads.
- Keep provider limits explicit. Do not inherit a Dot binding,
attachment permission, or workspace permission when hiring another
agent.
- Include the required Markdown format in cross-task document writes and
validate the API title limit. Verify real creation and revision
persistence.
- Restrict command execution to Linux bubblewrap with descendant
containment. macOS retains workspace file tools and artifact publishing,
while refusing command calls. Explain the platform limit in setup.
- Exclude Paperclip instance state from workspace files, uploads,
artifact publication, and sandbox commands. Protect nested directories
and case variants. Fail closed when the directory protection scan
exceeds 4,096 directories.
- Add static UI compression for slow public tunnels. Document setup, the
complete tool inventory, and qualification limits.

## Verification

- Merge preparation on `00ca2c75b` integrates merged base #15402 and
master `fc6304dfe`. The ancestry commit preserves the reviewed follow-up
source tree. The subsequent security fix excludes instance state from
file tools, uploads, artifact publication, and sandbox commands. It
preserves private task authorization and task monitors. It regenerates
the combined tool catalog, seeded catalog digest, and protocol manifest.
Workspace typecheck, full build, and UI token gates pass. All sixteen
real Dot broker cases and 93 company import cases pass after the review
fixes and creator-attribution test correction. The exported
human-assignment catalog and Unicode page boundaries are also fixed. All
ten catalog tests and nine workspace/skill bridge tests pass. All 35
workspace bridge and authority tests passed after the instance-state
fix, including real macOS commands in that intermediate version. The
subsequent document and descendant-containment fixes pass 44 focused
tests across bridge, authority, and setup UI, with six Linux command
cases skipped on macOS. Real cross-task documents pass the route
validator and persist two revisions. macOS refuses command execution and
does not advertise the tool. Full workspace typecheck and build, changed
server/UI typechecks, and token gates pass again on the final commit.
Greptile rates final head 00ca2c75b 5/5 and its completed check
concludes success; all review threads are resolved. All 58 current-head
checks are complete: 54 passed and 4 intentionally skipped. This
includes full tests, typecheck, build, Runner, browser E2E, release
verification, and Canary Dry Run. The older full local root attempt
finished with 16,602 passes, 93 skips, and ten failures across two
suites: it began before source edits and retained earlier imported
implementations while loading later tests. Both suites pass a clean
final-head rerun (25 passed, six Linux-only command cases skipped on
macOS). This mixed-source full attempt is not a final-head full-suite
pass; use the fresh CI evidence below.
- Full workspace typecheck and build pass for the standalone Dot change
on head `392d54f80`. UI token gates are clean. The full workspace
typecheck passed before the final importer UI edit; the changed UI
typecheck, build, and token gates pass again on the final commit. The
server build passes for its unchanged final source.
- Standalone selection, creation, settings, harness visibility,
inventory, and runtime admission checks pass. OAuth onboarding and the
real Rust/PostgreSQL broker suite pass 27 cases with the general Runner
option disabled. Dot and MCP revocation still block pairing; other
Runner providers remain disabled. Create, hire, conversion, and
inherited-hire route regressions pass 68 cases. The runtime selection
suite passes 20 cases. The setup UI suite passes 50 cases. Company
import and dev binary checks pass 97 cases. Import UI checks pass 29
cases, including Dot-only selection, preservation of imported Dot
agents, generic Runner fallback, canonical configuration serialization,
and required billing acknowledgement. A read of the synthetic instance
reports the native binary required with Dot enabled, the general rollout
disabled, and no persisted native work.
- The latest attachment, operator-consent, generic API file-guard, and
bridge checks pass 80 tests. Cache and native lifecycle checks pass 550
tests; create/import builders pass 45 tests; attachment setup UI checks
pass 16 tests. The real Rust/PostgreSQL Dot broker suite passes 15
cases.
- Earlier authority, human assignment, pinned skill, confinement,
cancellation, inheritance, onboarding, replay, OpenAPI, and gateway
regressions pass their focused rechecks. Workspace writes reject
concurrent stale hashes.
- In the live empty test-drive, turn the general Runner option off and
leave Dot and MCP on. Add agent shows a separate OpenAI Dot choice.
Create rejects missing billing acknowledgement, saves the canonical Dot
configuration, and opens pairing. The existing paired Dot remains ready
and passes its prerequisite checks. No new plugin pairing was needed for
this UI change. The final browser import preview keeps a Dot source
agent as OpenAI Dot, falls back a generic Runner agent while its switch
is off, and offers Dot independently.
- Real Dot completed OAuth, signed MCP Events readiness, and an
event-only assigned document task in an empty synthetic instance.
Pairing saved its binding without a second configuration save.
- Real Dot verified human assignment, cross-task comments and documents,
pinned skill reading, sandbox commands, lease renewal, follow-up input,
and a downloaded artifact whose bytes and hash matched its receipt. An
idle conversation request created an intake, created a task for its
human owner, continued after a definite missing-file read error, and
finalized Done with exit code 0.
- After operator approval, real Dot read a synthetic assigned-task
attachment and wrote its file-only random proof into an agent-authored
document. Its first test required accepting review because the existing
document tool removed the final newline.
- On head `2626c8f9b`, real Dot read a 13,849-byte synthetic attachment
in two pages, used `expectedSha256` on page two, saved exactly its final
random marker, verified readback, and finalized Done with exit code 0. A
direct inbox check was required for this attachment qualification; it
does not claim event-only delivery.
- Previous head `392d54f80` passes all 55 checks (53 passed, two
intentionally skipped), including the full test, typecheck, build,
native Runner, browser, and release verification gates. Greptile rates
this head 5/5; all review threads are resolved.
- Head `2626c8f9b` passed all 56 checks: 54 passed and two intentionally
skipped. This includes full typecheck, build, native Runner, server
tests, serialized suites, browser E2E, and Canary Dry Run. The unchanged
Cursor managed-runtime test exceeded its five-second deadline on the
first attempt; its focused local suite passed all eight cases, and the
single CI rerun plus dependent verify gate passed.
- A prior full local serial test attempt reported 19 failures (16,141
passed, 88 skipped) and stopped before later wrapper groups. It began
before the final source edits. Every failed suite has a passing fresh
recheck; the macOS snapshot stress case passes alone in 227 seconds. The
previous head `000fb9261` passed all 56 CI checks. PRs leave
`pnpm-lock.yaml` unchanged; CI and the refresh bot own dependency
resolution.

## Risks

- Dot remains off by default. Its own opt-in does not enable other
Runner providers. It still requires the MCP option; disabling Dot blocks
new work while keeping existing recovery and saved bindings.
- Dot requires a stable public HTTPS origin. Its base provider in #15402
is merged. Temporary tunnels are useful for testing but are not
permanent deployments.
- Idle intake creates a visible agent-authored task. It does not
fabricate a human message or bypass ordinary admission.
- Workspace commands require Linux bubblewrap with a private PID
namespace; deployment qualification is still needed. macOS file tools
and artifact publishing remain available, but commands are disabled
because sandbox-exec does not contain detached descendants. There is no
unrestricted fallback. Command protection fails closed above 4,096
workspace directories. The historical macOS command walkthrough does not
qualify the current Linux implementation.
- Provider model choice, token usage, cost, native thread control, and
global external stopping remain unavailable. Known Paperclip budget
gates still apply.
- The workspace bridge and attachment reader are separate opt-in
settings. Reading assigned task files sends their contents to OpenAI.
Revocation prevents future reads but cannot withdraw bytes already sent.
Files are read on request; automatic inbound attachment staging remains
disabled.
- An existing event registration can retain earlier instructions that
prohibit extra tasks. Dot asked for permission before a second intake
after the final event-only bootstrap; that extra no-nudge continuation
is not live-qualified under that earlier registration. The later
attachment qualification submitted normally through the composer. The
revised onboarding prompt describes the new idle entry point, and its
protocol polling path is tested.
- OpenAI event delivery can be delayed; a webhook acknowledgement is not
proof that Dot has begun work.
- A running Dot can retain an old plugin catalog after tool refresh.
Refresh and actual tool exposure must be checked before using new
top-level actions.
- Hosted and remote controller modes are not qualified.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact deployment ID and context window
size are not exposed in this session. Capabilities used: reasoning,
repository editing, code execution, test inspection, and browser
control.

DottaandPaperclip fc6304dfe5 feat(runner): add experimental OpenAI Dot provider over MCP Events (#15402)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents, tasks, permissions, and execution
budgets.
> - Paperclip Runner gives each provider the same admitted task and tool
authority.
> - OpenAI Dot runs outside the local process tree and needs
asynchronous work delivery.
> - The merged MCP gateway supplies OAuth consent and signed event
delivery.
> - A personal assistant grant cannot safely stand in for an assigned
agent.
> - This pull request adds a separate Dot agent connection and a durable
Rust Runner bridge.
> - The operator can assign work to Dot and inspect its accepted work,
tool receipts, and result.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Agent or provider**

OpenAI Dot, as an experimental provider of the existing Paperclip Runner
adapter.

**Why this adapter is useful**

An operator can assign normal Paperclip tasks to an existing Dot. Dot
can read its mailbox, request work on an assigned task, use admitted
task tools, and submit a result. Paperclip keeps company scope,
checkout, approvals, known budget limits, and activity attribution.

**How the agent is invoked**

A dedicated `/mcp/runner` OAuth resource pairs one Dot grant with one
agent. A signed MCP mailbox event wakes Dot. Dot explicitly accepts the
assignment. The Rust Runner owns the durable turn and operation
receipts. The first release supports self-hosted instances with a local
Runner controller.

**Additional context**

This extends the merged public MCP gateway from #14846 and the assistant
invitation and device-consent work from #14933. This also integrates the
merged assistant tool and configuration expansion in #15380. Dot retains
its dedicated agent resource and cannot receive personal configuration
permission. The public assistant connection remains a personal
connection.

## What Changed

- Add a durable Rust Dot provider and its TypeScript Runner driver.
- Add closed PRP v3 external-provider operations and native execution
input v6.
- Add company-scoped pairing, mailbox, assignment, and operation
records.
- Reuse merged browser/device consent, client metadata verification,
webhook admissions, refresh, secret rotation, and warm-standby gates.
- Keep Dot scopes, issuer, grants, event workers, and tool access
separate from personal assistant access.
- Add Dot configuration, pairing, readiness, and consent UI. Keep agent
grants out of the personal Connections entry.
- Regenerate the Dot-only migration after master. Preserve published
gateway migrations. Make the new migration safe to reapply.
- Document setup, recovery, accounting limits, evidence, and remaining
account qualification.
- Reverify reconnect callbacks and wake outstanding work with a fresh
mailbox reference; preserve the existing assignment and operation
receipts.
- Clean up Dot bindings and waiting runs on OAuth revoke and
refresh-token replay. Old grants cannot revoke replacement bindings.
- Restore the pairing reference when an unsaved agent form is reopened;
document board-only pairing routes in OpenAPI.
- Accept a clean Rust exit after the acknowledged shutdown receipt.
Unexpected exits still require recovery.
- Clear the cached binding after a successful revoke so a failed
connection refresh cannot restore it.
- Add production-component Storybook states and screenshots for pairing
and connection review. All preview account data is synthetic.
- Persist normalized completion, serialize Dot turns and durable work
admission, and poll subscription readiness.
- Serialize mailbox writes and cursor reads; retain paused fence
acknowledgement without task authority.
- Authorize admitted review runs without changing the worker assignee.
Include the fenced assignment ID in production stop notices.

## Verification

- This PR integrates master `4a8178e9c`. Dot migration
`0317_messy_famine.sql` follows the published history and is safe to
reapply. The merge preserves the reserved migration connection,
batch-commit handling, private task checks, task monitors, and native
accounting.
- Local workspace typecheck, full build, and UI token gates pass. The
server typecheck passes after the review fixes. Database and native
executor regressions pass.
- All twelve real Rust/PostgreSQL Dot integration tests and twelve Dot
driver tests pass. The tests cover native document writing and
finalization, durable replay, queue admission, mailbox ordering,
admitted reviews, stale authority, production stop references, and
paused acknowledgements.
- Current head `d0e7e0626` passes all 57 checks: 53 pass and four are
intentionally skipped. This includes full typecheck, build, tests, Rust
Runner verification, browser E2E, release verification, and Canary Dry
Run. Greptile rates this exact head 5/5. All review threads are
resolved.
- The full local root test run is slower than the sharded CI run and has
not completed. The full CI test gates pass on the current commit.
Focused local regressions pass.
- Real-account pairing and event delivery on this base commit remain
unqualified. Live account and setup proof are recorded in the follow-up
#15414.

The following screenshots use synthetic preview data. They show the
production pairing component and do not qualify a real account or the
full agent setup journey.

![Synthetic connected
preview](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/codex/dot-events-prototype/doc/screenshots/openai-dot-runner/connected.jpg?raw=true)

## Risks

- This base adapter uses `PAPERCLIP_ENABLE_OPENAI_DOT=1` plus Public MCP
and Paperclip Runner. The separate experimental-settings follow-up in
#15414 replaces this environment flag with saved operator settings.
- Dot does not expose provider token usage or cost. The operator must
acknowledge external billing. Known Paperclip budget gates still apply.
- Cancellation fences Paperclip authority. It does not confirm that Dot
stopped all external activity.
- Assigned skill files and third-party MCP bindings are unsupported and
reject admission. There is no mounted workspace, model selector, or
provider thread identifier.
- Hosted agent-broker and remote controller deployments are not
qualified.
- The new migration follows the merged master history. Existing
prototype databases still need the normal master migration history
before this Dot-only migration.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact deployment ID and context window
size are not exposed in this session. Capabilities used: reasoning,
repository editing, code execution, and test inspection.

DottaandPaperclip 99a9de9940 fix(mcp): personalize assistant connections and hide revoked grants (#15411)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Assistant connections let people use their organization from another
assistant.
> - Setup begins with an invitation and returns to a list of connected
assistants.
> - Client-only labels obscure the authorizing person, while revoked
rows clutter that list.
> - This pull request shows the person’s avatar, names connections by
owner and client, and hides revoked rows.
> - It also shortens the copied invitation while keeping the approval
instructions.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Related: #14933 and #15380.

**What existing behavior does this improve?**

Invitation copy and assistant connection management, in the
organization’s Connections screen and the account-wide management page.

**Subsystem affected**

Cross-cutting: shared MCP connection types, server profile projection,
UI and Storybook.

**Current behavior**

Connections are labeled only with a client name such as “Codex.” Revoked
connections remain visible. The invitation includes an extra sentence
about agent identity.

**Proposed behavior**

Show the authorizing person’s avatar and use names such as “Dotta’s
Codex connection.” Hide revoked rows after successful revocation and
when loading retained revoked grants. Failed revocation leaves the
connection visible. Remove the extra identity sentence from invitation
copy.

**Reason and benefit**

Make connection identity clear and keep the list focused on usable
connections.

**Breaking changes**

The connection response adds optional `user` metadata with name and
image. Older servers remain usable. Names and revoked-row visibility
change in the UI; OAuth client identity, authorization and audit
retention remain unchanged.

## What Changed

- Shorten the shared invitation text.
- Project the authorizing person’s name and avatar through the
user-scoped connection endpoint, without returning email or credentials.
- Reuse the existing Identity component and owner naming conventions
across the connection page, catalog card and account-wide list.
- Hide revoked grants and remove a successfully revoked row from the
shared cache, even if the subsequent refresh fails.
- Update documentation, regression tests and production-page Storybook
fixtures and revocation journeys.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm build`, `pnpm build-storybook` and `pnpm
check:token-gates` pass. Final UI type checks also pass.
- Focused consent and connection UI tests: 31 pass, including company
filtering, legacy metadata, custom client names, user-initial fallbacks,
failed revocation, retained revoked rows and refresh failure after
successful revocation.
- Existing MCP regression suite: 6 pass; 71 database checks are skipped
locally because embedded PostgreSQL cannot start on this machine. The
added database check verifies user-profile isolation and retained
revocation history; CI runs these checks.
- Browser verification with Storybook fixtures: owner avatar and name
render; revocation removes the selected row in both production pages,
leaves other connections visible, and restores the empty state after the
last revocation.
- All 54 current-head CI checks pass, with two optional Storybook jobs
skipped. CI includes database, browser, runner, typecheck, build and
clean-install canary coverage.
- Greptile reviewed commit `1368d79e1066b418712224378d89d64c2b11cb86`:
5/5, no actionable findings or unresolved threads.
- The full local `pnpm test:run` was stopped after complete CI passed.
Local database coverage remains unavailable because embedded PostgreSQL
cannot start; no full local-suite pass is claimed.

## Risks

Low risk. The additive profile field is optional for compatibility.
Revoked grants are filtered only from management UI and retained for
audit. Revocation failure does not hide an active connection. No
authorization scopes, token handling or schema changes.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with code editing, command execution and
browser verification. The exact deployment ID and context-window size
are not exposed in this session.

DottaandPaperclip 2d0c138122 Expand direct assistant MCP tools for work and configuration (#15380)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - People also use assistants in Codex, Claude, and other MCP clients.
> - The existing assistant connection can read work and create tasks or
comments.
> - It cannot edit tasks, exchange files, or manage normal agent and
project settings.
> - These operations must retain the person's permissions and
Paperclip's execution rules.
> - This pull request adds an explicit operation registry and separately
consented configuration access.
> - Assistants can manage work without receiving credentials or runner
authority.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Cross-cutting: assistant MCP, domain routes, consent UI, storage, and
Product E2E.

**Problem or motivation**

A connected assistant cannot update tasks, maintain documents, attach
files, or configure existing agents, projects, and skills. Users must
leave the assistant for these routine actions.

**Proposed solution**

Add named tools and a restricted API registry to direct connections.
Require separate configuration consent. Reuse domain routes and retry
receipts. File uploads save the attachment when the byte transfer
succeeds.

**Alternatives considered**

Arbitrary REST forwarding would expose administration and credential
operations. Runner impersonation would bypass execution ownership.
Separate upload completion calls add unnecessary client state.

**Roadmap alignment**

Checked ROADMAP.md and related MCP pull requests. This extends the
human-authorized connection from #14933. It does not replace the runner
or introduce agent impersonation.

Companion Cloud routing and directory isolation:
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip-cloud/pull/678.

## What Changed

- Add task editing, finish/block, documents/revisions, deliverables,
agent settings/instructions, projects/repositories, and skills/files.
- Add an allowlisted API search/call registry with identical field
restrictions, scopes, and retry identities.
- Add unchecked configuration consent. Existing write grants retain
their current authority.
- Add hashed, expiring file transfer tickets and atomic upload receipts.
No completion call is required.
- Preserve company boundaries, human attribution, active native
execution ownership, and execution review gates.
- Add protocol/domain tests, consent stories, and eight paid Product E2E
workflows.
- Repair two CI fixture races: await cold route setup before assertions,
and wait for asynchronously loaded connection copy. Both fixture suites
pass (24 + 48 tests).

## Verification

- Consent revision: one write-access checkbox controls requested work
and configuration permissions in browser and device flows. All 16
consent tests, UI typecheck/build and token gates pass. Updated
interactive stories cover default approval, opt-out and viewer
restrictions. The paid browser helper uses the new exact label. Real
GPT-5.4 Mini Product E2E passes 2/2 at
`64f96373118eb190f8cba1c2ab17cb979555f3ad` (configuration + permission
denial), campaign `local-2026-10-07T00-51-14-337Z`, no automatic
retries, cleanup passed; $0.04149375 estimated assistant cost plus
unpriced worker usage. Raw results, usage and source fingerprints are
retained in the worktree. UI and Product E2E typechecks pass.

- Prior head `2f246d4b74f1f98c75ebcb37ae6753a748237fac`: all 52 checks
pass; two optional Storybook checks skip. Greptile 5/5 on that head, no
unresolved review threads. Final consent head
`64f96373118eb190f8cba1c2ab17cb979555f3ad` also has all checks passing
and Greptile 5/5 with no unresolved threads. The unchanged Cursor
sandbox test had one 10-second timeout, passed in local isolation, and
passed its single CI rerun; the failed attempt remains in [the CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37554106934).
The existing chat retry-denial browser test had one visibility failure;
its single rerun passes, and the failed attempt remains in [the CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37542735691).

- Full workspace `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` pass at final
runtime source `b2196fae1`. UI token gates pass.
- 139 MCP/OAuth/transfer/privacy tests and 76 grader calibration tests
pass, including one-connection PostgreSQL OAuth and concurrent upload
retries.
- Paid Product E2E: all eight expanded cases qualified across Mini,
Haiku and Sonnet. A merged-source repeat passed 23/24; one Haiku cell
timed out before application startup. Final affected-case qualification
passes 9/9 on all three models with grader v16, including the failed
cell. Automatic retries disabled; failures, costs, source hashes and
independent durable-state/file assertions are retained in [the
verification
record](doc/plans/2026-10-06-expanded-assistant-mcp-verification.md).
- Actual Codex CLI, Claude Code and OpenCode clients completed local
reads/mutations. Codex wrote a report, Claude updated it in a later
conversation, and OpenCode uploaded/downloaded a file with matching
SHA-256 and registered the attachment. Revoking the CLI grant rejects
subsequent bridge initialization.
- Butter staging is verified on final runtime `b2196fae1`
([deployment](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip-cloud/actions/runs/37538432138)).
A fresh OpenCode workspace fetched the copied invitation, configured
remote MCP, started OAuth and reached real consent with configuration
unchecked. Invalid transfer tickets return 403 through Cloud. Human
approval for the new persistent staging grant is pending; hosted
task/file success is not yet claimed. The final transaction fix is
deployed.
- Full local `pnpm test:run` passed 15,614 general-server tests but
stopped on two macOS timeouts. The heartbeat test passed in isolation;
the existing 40,000-file Git stress fixture timed out again. Its Linux
CI lane passes. Later local full-suite phases did not run after the
timeout; this is not an all-green local full-suite claim.
- Instructions and security limits are in `doc/public-mcp.md`; the saved
plan is `doc/plans/2026-10-06-expanded-assistant-mcp-tools.md`.

## Risks

- This expands the experimental direct MCP surface. Explicit schemas and
domain permissions must stay synchronized.
- Migration 0311 adds transfer tickets and upload receipts. Expired
orphan cleanup must not remove committed attachments.
- Configuration requires a new consent request containing that scope;
the single write-access choice controls it alongside work mutations.
Refreshing an old grant does not add it.
- The public directory keeps its original ten tools through the
companion Cloud change.
- Hosted consent/work proof remains the final delivery gate. The PR
stays draft while approval of the new staging grant is pending; code
checks and review are green. Merging is a separate action.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex (GPT-6, tool use and code execution). The exact serving
model ID and context window are not exposed in this session. Paid
evaluation models: gpt-5.4-mini, claude-haiku-4-5-20251001;
claude-sonnet-4-6.

DottaandPaperclip 22a3ea3414 Invite assistants from Connections with scoped browser and device consent (#14933)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Public MCP lets people use their organization from an external
assistant.
> - Operators need a visible control for this experimental access.
> - Hosted users should select an organization once and then approve its
permissions.
> - This pull request adds the setting, invitation-first setup, and
browser or device consent.
> - Connections provides a copyable invitation with public instructions
that grant no access.
> - Users reach browser consent from their assistant and return to
inspect or revoke access.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Builds on merged foundation #14846. This PR now targets master. Related
settings convention: #13905.

**Current behavior**

The preview uses an environment variable to enable MCP. Hosted consent
repeats organization selection. Assistant access has no entry in
Connections, so users must already know the endpoint and how to reach
consent.

**Proposed behavior**

An administrator enables Settings → Experimental → Assistant connections
(MCP). A hosted connection shows the selected organization and its icon,
then asks for permissions. Requested write access starts checked when
the user’s role permits it; the user can opt out before connecting.
Direct instance connections show an organization picker with the first
available organization selected. The selection stays fixed across
refetches and still requires an explicit Connect action. Connections
includes Assistant Connection (MCP). Its setup page explains the
canonical endpoint, client configuration, browser authentication, and
connected access. It connects as the current person and does not select
or impersonate an agent.

**Reason and benefit**

Operators manage access with the other experiments. Users select one
organization, and both the UI and server enforce that choice.

**Breaking changes**

The old enable variable has no effect. Preview operators must enable the
setting once. Apply the additive consent-request migration before
deploying the tenant, then deploy the compatible Cloud broker. Existing
direct requests and grants keep their behavior.

## What Changed

- Simplify OAuth and device consent: show the Paperclip logo beside
“Connect {client} to Paperclip”, fall back to “your assistant”, and show
the identifying origin plus its favicon below, with the callback URL
also visible when different. Remove the hosted-organization creation
action. Default to the first available organization without silently
changing it on refetch; preserve company restrictions and write
opt-outs. Keep the button row contained on narrow screens.
- Make Copy invitation the primary action, using the shared animated
AgentSetupPrompt and a collapsed manual setup section with icon-labeled
line tabs. Remove redundant link actions, copy-status text, the extra
first-prompt well and revocation explanation from the setup page. Serve
shared version-aware HTML and Markdown instructions without private
organization data.
- Support guarded Client ID Metadata Documents alongside dynamic
registration, and include authorization response issuer identification.
- Add RFC 8628 device authorization with separately hashed codes,
expiry, shared request quotas, persistent polling backoff and atomic
redemption. Reuse human consent, role checks, scoped grants, audit and
revocation.
- Add CLI device login and a local stdio bridge. Store credentials
separately with private permissions and serialize rotating refreshes.
- Add device consent stories and five cold-start paid Product E2E cases
with independent grant, configuration and durable-work assertions.

- Add `enablePublicMcp` to the settings validator, normalizer, feature
catalog, and toggle UI. Check it live for OAuth, tools, subscriptions,
and event delivery. Keep connection management and revocation available
while disabled.
- Default the MCP origin to the existing auth public URL, with strict
validation and an explicit override.
- Persist the optional OAuth `company_id` restriction. Describe only
that company and reject approval for any other company, even if the
person belongs to both. Keep active-membership and role checks.
- Show the Paperclip icon and a large organization icon during consent.
Return the saved company logo through the company-scoped request
response and reuse the standard fallback icon. Use the requested concise
permission labels: “Read all of your Paperclip data” and “Allow write
access and creating tasks as me”. Use concise permission copy, retain a
compact client and callback-origin disclosure, and remove the footer
link.
- Default requested write access on for eligible roles. Preserve opt-out
across organization changes and refetch, reset defaults for a new
request, and submit read-only access when the request or role does not
allow writes. Align the shared checkbox with its label.
- Use organization wording in consent, management, settings, and
walkthroughs. Keep the organization fixed for hosted requests and retain
direct-instance choice.
- Add an Assistant Connection (MCP) card to the Connectors catalog, a
setup page in the app shell, and a return link from Experimental
settings. Include Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, and generic remote MCP
instructions.
- Read the live gate and canonical server URL through authenticated
setup metadata. Show only the current person’s grants for the selected
organization, refresh after consent, and support revocation. Surface
catalog status failures with an explicit retry action; do not present
them as an empty connection list. Opening setup grants no authority.
- Start the eight guided chapters in Connections. Keep presenter notes
and chapter controls around real product pages in the app shell. Explain
the terminal, consent, delegation, retrieval, and revocation handoffs.
Mark conversation examples as illustrative. Cover first use, client
setup, connected, loading, and error states. Keep the existing consent
and management stories.
- Keep the paid-eval setup and browser helper aligned with the setting
and consent button.

## Verification

- Warm-standby integration fix `ec64ea05e`: public MCP ingress now
follows the Cloud claim guard; MCP and discovery paths return 503
instead of SPA HTML while unclaimed. Event polling checks the in-memory
claim before reading the persisted experimental setting. All 97 focused
OAuth/Cloud tests and server typecheck pass, including new request and
timer regressions for idle-before-claim and resume-after-claim behavior.
Fresh review is 5/5 with no unresolved threads, and all security scans
pass on this final head. All browser shards, typecheck, build, canary
installation and other test groups passed on the first attempt. The
unchanged Cursor sandbox default-command test timed out at 10 seconds;
the exact test passed locally without edits in 587 ms. The single
failed-job retry passed, with the original failure retained in workflow
37500711895. All 54 final-head checks pass on
`ec64ea05e9a03e2179d4e2f84c2de03761f7ce26` (two optional Storybook jobs
are intentionally skipped).

- Final master integration `8457828fc`: merged foundation #14846 and
current master, preserving the invitation changes and all 33 files from
the two newer upstream changes. No migration renumbering was required.
All 95 focused OAuth/Cloud integration tests, full recursive typecheck
and token gates pass. All CI gates passed on that integration head;
review identified the warm-standby issue fixed above.

- Security-review fix `8c1d0b696`: commit shared global/per-source
admission before outbound CIMD work, preserve failed-attempt receipts,
and validate resource/scope before fetching. Added migration
`0305_chubby_vin_gonzales.sql` and six concurrent/adversarial regression
cases. All 69 OAuth/metadata tests, 26 migration checks, full recursive
typecheck and production build pass. The security scanner passed that
commit. Follow-up `87f9658e7` limits only actual cache-miss fetches; 18
authorization requests sharing one proxy across two service instances
use just two fetches. All 70 OAuth/metadata tests and server typecheck
pass after that refinement. Final follow-up `8ebeae84c` reports
admission-storage failures as retryable HTTP 503 instead of invalid
client metadata. Its regression proves no outbound request before
admission and successful retry after storage recovers. All 71
OAuth/metadata tests and server typecheck pass. Final-head security
scanning passes; Greptile is 5/5 with no unresolved findings. CI passed
all browser shards, typecheck, build, token gates and canary
installation. One unchanged adapter-utils bridge test raced a
response-file write (expected a JSON error, received the safe
file-changed error). The exact test passed locally without edits. The
single failed-job retry passed; the original failure is retained in
workflow 37490609192. All 54 checks now pass on final head
`8ebeae84ca77c0cf7ac12c2006f0f8743fe50e0b`, with security scan and fresh
Greptile 5/5 and no unresolved threads. Foundation #14846 subsequently
merged as `e34abee670069cca84afb2efb86041bce7dccbec`; the final
integration above now targets master.

- Integration with current master: preserved the new Connections source
filters and pagination, kept all eval suites, and regenerated the
consent/device snapshots as migrations 0303/0304. All four MCP migration
SQL hashes are unchanged from the staging versions. Full recursive
typecheck and production build, 132 focused UI tests (including catalog
filtering), 89 server authorization/settings tests, 26 migration tests,
120 eval calibration tests and token gates pass. Review follow-up
`4820ce74c` also keeps active assistant grants in Installed, with
pending/error recovery and revocation/company-isolation coverage. All 76
setup/catalog tests, UI typecheck and token gates pass after that fix.
The unchanged signoff browser test timed out waiting for a heartbeat in
CI at `4820ce74c`; the exact test passed locally without code changes,
and the preceding CI head passed that shard. That same unchanged test
failed at the reviewer stage in the next CI run. All five signoff tests
passed three times locally (15/15), without test changes. All eight
browser shards pass at final head `8ebeae84c`; no browser-test edits or
failed-browser-job retries were needed.

- Setup-page refinement at `9ab009178`: all 17 focused setup/consent
tests pass, along with UI typecheck, production build, Storybook build
and token gates. Browser exercised the shared prompt preview and client
tab switching, and the updated InvitationCopied Storybook interaction
checks its clipboard fixture. All final-head CI checks pass at
`9ab009178`, with no unresolved review findings. Deployed successfully
to Butter in
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip-cloud/actions/runs/37475189524.
Verified the actual page, tab switching and line styling, removed
actions/copy, and successful native copy/paste of the complete Butter
invitation into a local-only test field. The existing Claude grant was
left intact.
- Consent follow-up at `dc8e9fd11`: all 10 consent tests and token gates
pass. UI typecheck and production build passed again at `4e4d5e4d9`;
Storybook build and eval-helper typecheck passed for `28101cf91`.
Follow-ups let the primary button wrap on narrow screens, preserve a
distinct callback URL, and use only bundled icons to avoid pre-consent
requests to client-selected sites. Browser-verified the real consent
component in desktop and 320px mobile stories, including default
selection, write access and preserved opt-out. Updated E2E
heading/default-selection helpers. All CI checks passed at `dc8e9fd11`,
with review 5/5 and no unresolved threads. The Butter preview
publication needed a retry because npm initially accepted the DB package
before making it visible; the retry succeeded and `dc8e9fd11` deployed.
Verified a fresh, unapproved native Codex CIMD request on Butter:
default organization/write selection, known-client heading and icon,
distinct callback origin, and removed creation action. No grant was
approved for this UI check. Prior paid runs below retain their exact
source provenance; this UI-only follow-up did not rerun paid
qualification.
- Source-pinned paid matrix at
`2992ef2710f47230e7f484c709c6ba02524f884c`: **15/15 passed**, five cases
each on GPT-5.4 Mini, Claude Haiku and Sonnet. Campaign
`local-2026-10-06T02-41-14-462Z`. Covers cold start, existing config,
unavailable host, denied consent and reconnect/later retrieval, with
independent configuration/grant/task/run/document assertions. Original
failures, transcripts, source fingerprints and billing remain retained.
- Final instruction follow-up `cda8178af`: **3/3 cold starts passed** on
Mini, Haiku and Sonnet. Campaign `local-2026-10-06T02-58-30-041Z`.
Latest `0637b9f1c` shares that same guidance across HTML, Markdown and
manual UI after review; generated Markdown is verified byte-identical to
the paid-evaluated version. Shared build, server/UI typechecks, token
gates and 63 auth/metadata tests passed again. Every CI gate passed at
prior HEAD `0637b9f1c`, with review 5/5 and no unresolved threads.
- Other focused checks: 11 CLI credential/refresh-lock tests, 120 eval
calibration tests, server/UI/eval typechecks, token gates and Storybook
build passed. Full recursive typecheck and production build passed
during implementation; CI also passed them at `2992ef271`.
- Local full-suite limitations: a large-file Git streaming test times
out on this Mac, and broader CLI/route runs hit DB hook timeouts. Fresh
MCP reruns passed, and the corresponding CI groups passed. No claim that
the local full suite is green.
- Actual clients: Codex 0.153.4 and Claude Code 2.1.245 reach CIMD
consent; device CLI reaches verification/consent. New grants await human
approval. Existing local OpenCode retrieved a saved result in a fresh
conversation through its previously approved grant.
- Fresh OpenCode 1.18.17 on Butter: started with no MCP config, received
the exact copied invitation, read public setup, configured its server
and started PKCE consent. Its shell command timed out; background retry
reached the client's own callback deadline while approval remained
pending. Latest instructions cover that handoff. **No completed Butter
read/delegation/result retrieval is claimed.**
- Cloud companion
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip-cloud/pull/672 passes
checks/review and deployed. Anonymous setup and device-protocol routing
verified. Core `2992ef271` deployed successfully and the actual Claude
web flow now reaches consent. Its extra JWT-bearer metadata is filtered
to implemented grants; unsupported token grants remain rejected. Final
`0637b9f1c` deployed successfully to Butter in
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip-cloud/actions/runs/37409195300;
live HTML and Markdown both contain the final guidance. The superseded
instruction-only build was canceled before deployment. This is a
core-only staging preview; private Cloud plugins are omitted. ChatGPT
web is signed out, so browser connector use is unverified.
- Screenshot gallery begins at Butter's dashboard and distinguishes real
setup/pending consent from local reuse and fixtures. It records the
timeout finding. New persistent access needs human confirmation before
the remaining actual-client acceptance work.
- Manual path: Connectors → Assistant Connection (MCP) → Copy invitation
→ paste into assistant → configure and start authorization → sign in and
approve → verify `paperclip_connection` → delegate → retrieve the saved
report later.
- Plan and instructions: `doc/plans/2026-10-05-assistant-invitations.md`
and `doc/public-mcp.md`.

## Risks

- Apply additive, replay-safe migration `0304_curvy_shadow_king.sql`
before using device authorization. The public setup link carries no
credential. Device codes and tokens stay private; neither sharing
instructions nor installing a plugin authorizes access.
- Apply additive migration `0305_chubby_vin_gonzales.sql` before
deploying the shared metadata admission gate. It retains at most 60
short-lived, hashed-source receipts per instance and rejects excess
attempts with 429.
- CIMD metadata fetching is a new external-input boundary. It requires
HTTPS, exact client ID and redirect validation, bounded responses and
guarded DNS/network access. Client names remain self-reported.
- Device support is per-instance. The central Cloud broker retains its
existing grant support. Host installation and tool reload capabilities
vary by client; instructions describe manual settings and restart
requirements.

- Consent names the registered client in its heading and displays its
identifying origin below. Known-origin icons are bundled; all other
origins show a neutral site icon without contacting client-selected
sites. Client names are self-reported; the callback origin is the
recipient check. The Cloud chooser also displays the original client and
receiving origin before tenant handoff.

- A user who accepts the preselected write permission can create tasks
and comments. Task creation and comments can start or wake agents and
use execution budget; the consent label uses the concise wording
explicitly requested by the maintainer. Scope requests, role checks, and
the final Connect action still apply.
- Migration `0303_supreme_garia.sql` adds one nullable UUID column with
`IF NOT EXISTS`. Requests without a company restriction keep the
direct-instance picker. The binding stays recorded if its company is
deleted; consent then fails closed.
- Deploy tenant support before the Cloud broker sends `company_id`.
Unknown or inaccessible organizations must never fall back to a
different company.
- The setting defaults off. Disabling access does not cancel work
already delegated. Existing tokens and unexpired subscriptions can
resume when enabled again; revocation remains separate.
- The catalog entry is visible for discovery while the feature is off.
Setup instructions, OAuth, and tool execution remain gated. No access is
granted by viewing the entry.
- Assistant sign-in starts in the external client so it owns PKCE and
callback state. Client command syntax can change and links to official
setup documentation are included.
- An authenticated instance and valid public URL are required. Hosting,
paid execution, and store publication remain separate rollout steps.

DottaandPaperclip e34abee670 feat(mcp): connect assistants to a team with user OAuth (#14846)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip gives teams durable tasks, agent execution, budgets, and
approvals.
> - People also use assistants in Codex, Claude, and other MCP clients.
> - Those assistants need a scoped connection that preserves the
person’s permissions and attribution.
> - Delegating a task must not turn the assistant into the assigned
agent.
> - This PR adds opt-in user OAuth, ten first-party tools, browser
consent, and workflow packages.
> - Paid product evals verify the resulting tasks, documents,
attribution, retries, and access boundaries.
> - The team keeps working after the assistant conversation ends.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation**

A person cannot connect an external assistant to an existing team
through browser consent and safely delegate durable work as themselves.

**Proposed solution**

Expose an opt-in `/mcp/paperclip` endpoint with individually described
first-party operations. Bind every connection to a person, client,
company, resource, and scopes. Reuse domain authorization and
scheduling. Package shared team-review, delegation, and follow-up
workflows for OpenAI/Codex and Claude.

**Alternatives considered**

Related PRs #9393 and #12549 cover earlier remote MCP and board-operator
approaches. This change uses user OAuth and a bounded public catalog. It
does not expose a generic executor, operator administration, static
shared board credentials, or external agent execution. Registry listing
work in #9851 is a separate distribution step.

**Roadmap alignment**

This maintainer-requested implementation extends the governed MCP
gateway, activity attribution, durable work products, and hosted
deployment direction in `ROADMAP.md`. It implements the first release of
the saved design plan; external agent participation and granted
third-party tools remain later releases.

## What Changed

- Add MCP 2.0 discovery and task status/comment/document Events on the
same authenticated endpoint. Persist subscriptions and delivery
receipts, verify HTTPS callbacks, sign Standard Webhooks, encrypt
callback material, recheck permissions/Cloud membership, and bound
retries/expiry. Older MCP clients keep their existing tools.
- Add discovery, dynamic client registration, S256 PKCE, resource
validation, rotating refresh tokens, revocation, and company consent.
Store credentials as hashes and recheck membership at execution.
- Add tools for connection identity, agents/projects, task
search/read/create, human comments, documents/deliverables, and
pending-approval links. Preserve current domain permissions and
scheduling.
- Add durable mutation receipts across reconnects. Matching retries
replay results; uncertain outcomes keep the same request ID and require
inspection.
- Add consent and connection-management pages, OAuth log redaction,
shared plugin workflows, and separate OpenAI/Codex and Claude package
outputs.
- Add eight paid Product E2E cases across three models, independent
durable-state grading, usage evidence, cleanup, and report integration.
Add task-document guidance and regenerate the runner capability
inventories.
- Add migrations 0301 and 0302, the dated implementation plan, result
notes, and direct-client setup instructions in `doc/public-mcp.md`.

## Verification

- Merge integration `e180b1948`: resolved conflicts with current master,
preserved both eval registries, regenerated capability catalogs, and
regenerated migrations as 0301/0302 while keeping the original
replay-safe SQL byte-identical. Local migration safety/snapshot tests
(26), MCP/OAuth tests (38), redaction/OpenAPI tests (71), and eval
catalog/grading tests (198) pass. Token and capability gates pass. Full
recursive typecheck passed. Fresh Greptile review is 5/5 with no
unresolved findings. CI is green on this exact head (55 successes, two
intentional skips, one neutral result): one unchanged Cursor sandbox
test timed out at 10 seconds, then passed locally in 856 ms. A single
retry of that failed shard and the aggregate workflow passed. Merge
remains blocked on the repository code-owner approval rule.

Earlier checks passed at `6aa0962d4fb715f2190bb7bb22efacab2e58495d`: 55
successes, two intentional skips and one neutral result. [The earlier CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/36901592350)
includes all test shards, browser tests, typecheck, build and canary dry
run. Greptile was 5/5 on that commit with no unresolved review threads.
GitHub still requires code-owner review under the repository merge
rules; passing checks do not bypass that approval. Paid source
fingerprints remain separate below and in the dated result note.

- Paid Events qualification passes **3/3**: GPT-5.4 Mini, Claude Haiku
4.5 and Claude Sonnet 4.6. Each uses a real public HTTPS callback,
signature verification and report retrieval in a fresh conversation. A
final Mini regression passes after the quota/status fixes. All evidence
validates. Bounded tunnel startup retries occur before provider calls
and remain visible; failed earlier attempts retain their original
grades.
- The earlier complete seven-case matrix passes **21/21**, with a
separate **3/3** delegation regression. Two preceding matrices also
passed 21/21 each. A complete 24-cell matrix including Events has not
been run. [The dated
results](doc/plans/2026-10-01-public-mcp-paid-eval-results.md) retain
exact source fingerprints, failures, model IDs and partial costs.
- Node 24: repository-wide `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` pass
after merging master. Server typecheck passes after the final
quota/status changes. Eval typecheck and all 892 eval-support tests
pass.
- All 33 real MCP/OAuth tests pass. The preceding combined MCP,
redaction, private-address and DNS-rebinding run passed 129 tests; two
later MCP regressions cover quota reuse and unchanged-status
suppression. All 28 adjacent issue-tree/stale-lock route tests pass. CI
then found a null checkout result in the existing concurrent-workspace
path; logging now uses optional status access. All 12 closed-workspace
tests and all 33 MCP tests pass after that correction. The exact-start
event calibration exposed a timestamp gap; scanning now includes the
subscription start, with all 33 MCP tests and server typecheck passing.
These two narrow corrections follow the paid regression.
- A real Core → Cloud → Core authority round trip passes OAuth, MCP 2.0
subscription/delivery, current membership loss, unsubscribe, legacy SDK
tools, refresh and revocation. Its callback transport is a fixture with
independent HMAC verification. The paid Events campaigns separately
prove public HTTPS delivery.
- Earlier component qualification passed UI 7,117 tests, CLI 502, shared
832, skills catalog 20, database 160 and OpenAPI 10. Token gates, module
boundaries, migration order and plugin regeneration passed. CI covers
general/serialized suites, eight browser shards, runner checks,
typecheck, build and canary dry run.
- **Local full-suite limitation:** the earlier monolithic run was not
clean. It encountered overlapping schema rebuilding, Mac database
shared-memory limits and isolated CLI/fixture failures. Targeted reruns
passed. The existing >32 MiB Git filename stress test still hit its
300-second Mac timeout. The additional serialized sweep stopped after 62
passing suites once CI passed. Original failures and partial logs
remain; this PR does not claim a wholly green local monolithic run.
- Local Codex CLI and Claude Code OAuth login and MCP SDK
interoperability were verified. Public-store installation, actual
ChatGPT Work Cloud Events UI, staging HTTPS client behavior and hosted
newcomer provisioning remain release gates.

Enablement is moving to **Settings → Experimental → Assistant
connections (MCP)** in the stacked follow-up
[#14933](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/14933). Merge
both for the intended setup experience. This foundation branch alone
still uses `PAPERCLIP_PUBLIC_MCP_ENABLED=true`. After deployment, set
`PAPERCLIP_PUBLIC_URL` to the authenticated instance's HTTPS origin, and
connect to `/mcp/paperclip`. Select a team and allow writes in browser
consent. Configure an available agent and budget, then delegate and
retrieve results later. For Events, rescan the deployed plugin catalog
in ChatGPT Work Cloud; the host supplies its webhook credentials when
the user asks to watch a task. See [the setup
runbook](doc/public-mcp.md).

## Risks

- Events are at-least-once and may arrive out of order. No replay cursor
is advertised. Clients must refresh finite subscriptions, read current
state and avoid comment feedback loops. Callback material uses the
instance secrets master key; hosted subscriptions require the updated
Cloud broker and are bounded to five minutes/the access proof expiry.
- ChatGPT Work Cloud/dot event UI, plugin rescan and a hosted staging
subscription remain deployment gates. Local signed-webhook and paid
model evidence does not claim those surfaces have been exercised.
- Disabled by default. Merging adds schema and opt-in code; it does not
deploy a public endpoint, publish a store listing, create a team, or
start paid agents.
- Migrations 0301 and 0302 are additive and idempotent. Their SQL is
unchanged from the earlier preview numbers, so hash-aware upgrade
reconciliation preserves prior staging applications. Normal instance
upgrades must apply it before enabling MCP.
- Task creation and comments can schedule paid agent work. Consent and
tool descriptions disclose that effect. Revocation blocks future calls
but does not undo delegated work.
- Public deployments need edge rate limits and credential-safe logging.
Internal dispatch is restricted to the closed catalog and carries a
request-local verified actor.
- Hosted onboarding requires the companion Cloud broker, encryption-key
configuration, and tenant rollout. Self-hosted direct connections can
use this PR alone.
- Store acceptance and agent-mode participation are not claimed.
Checked-in plugin endpoints are development defaults; rebuild packages
for a real deployment before installation.

by the session. Paid eval models: `gpt-5.4-mini-2026-03-17`,
`claude-haiku-4-5-20251001`, and `claude-sonnet-4-6`.
