39279aa34f feat(ui): shared error, connectivity and query foundation for disconnects (#15754)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The board reads API data and keeps the current task on screen.
> - A restart or temporary network failure can interrupt those reads.
> - Separate page error handlers can hide cached data or expose raw
server codes.
> - The app needs one connection state, readable error copy and a
consistent read policy.
> - This change provides that foundation and moves affected read
surfaces onto it.
> - The dependent write layer in #17960 preserves edits and submissions
across the same failures.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Temporary API failures could replace loaded content with errors.
Different surfaces handled the same outage differently. Some showed raw
server codes. A successful query to an unrelated service could also
falsely report that Paperclip had recovered.

**Expected behavior**

Keep cached content visible. Show one connection banner during sustained
trouble. Confirm recovery through the Paperclip health probe or its
WebSocket. Retry transient reads and show readable errors for permanent
failures.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Open a populated task or workspace page.
2. Interrupt API requests with a 503 or a dropped connection.
3. Keep an unrelated external request in flight.
4. Confirm that cached content remains and that the external result
cannot clear the outage.
5. Restore the API and check that reads refresh.

The write layer first merged into this feature branch in #15769 now has
its own dependent PR, #17960. This PR contains the shared foundation and
read changes. Merge this PR first.

## What Changed

- Classify API errors and provide readable error copy, including
non-JSON proxy responses and Retry-After handling.
- Use one connection store and health probe with bounded backoff.
Confirm recovery from the server health probe or live-updates WebSocket.
- Pause reads while disconnected, retry transient errors, and refresh
active reads after recovery.
- Keep cached data visible through shared query views and affected page,
panel and plugin read surfaces.
- Add one app-level connection banner and support the pending-write
count consumed by the dependent write layer.
- Add a query-error rendering guard. Call it directly from the existing
CI step. Update development documentation.

## Verification

- Historical-chat lookup now follows the same ready/stale roster state
as rendering. Three regressions fail before the fix; the six new cases
pass after it, including working Retry, fresh data, no-cache error,
permanent 403 and company isolation. All six focused query/recovery
suites pass 200 tests. Final-commit CI passes and Apex is 5/5 with no
unresolved findings. Canary Dry Run initially refused a preview version
that was already on npm. It passed after one rerun with fresh registry
metadata; no check was disabled.

- Integrated current master and retained both transcript interest
registration and connectivity reporting on socket open. The seven
focused recovery/query suites pass 288 tests, and UI typecheck and
production build pass. All 9,451 UI tests across 799 files pass on the
merge commit. Final-commit CI passes and Apex is 5/5 with no unresolved
findings.

- Current head `70d9335d732219352ef0f98414439766bbcb33df`: all hosted CI
checks pass. Apex is **5/5** on that head with no unresolved findings.
The branch has no merge conflict. GitHub still requires code-owner
approval.

- The foundation passes 9,430 UI tests in 804 files. After integrating
current master page paths, 190 focused page tests pass.
- Two unrelated-success regressions fail before the latest fix. With the
fix, 62 focused UI tests, all six guard tests and UI TypeScript pass.
- The composed foundation and write layer pass **9,505 UI tests in 808
files**, UI TypeScript, a production UI build, and query-error, token
and map guards.
- A real Chromium journey on the composed source injects a 503 during
title save. The loaded task stays visible; one reconnect banner appears;
the edit saves after recovery; another task stays unchanged; the saved
title survives reload.
- Full recursive local checks were not repeated because Runner
compilation exhausted local disk during another repair. Hosted checks
must pass before merge. No new staging deployment is claimed.

- Latest review follow-up: a cached CaseDetail now survives a failed
HTTP 429 refresh. Its page regression fails before the fix and passes
after it. Eighty focused foundation tests, UI TypeScript, build and
guards pass after that change.
- Earlier CI evidence is retained: several foundation jobs received a
runner shutdown signal together. The write-layer head also failed an
unchanged Runner descriptor close test with `provider_transport_failed`.
The same Runner source passed that suite in the foundation run. New CI
runs cover the updated heads; no check or assertion was weakened.

## Risks

- Shared retry defaults change the time before transient read errors
appear. Permanent errors still fail promptly.
- ApiError.message now contains readable copy. Callers that compare raw
codes must use ApiError.code.
- Cache success can come from another service or local data. It must not
confirm Paperclip recovery.
- Durable writes are reviewed separately in #17960. This PR does not
change database or mutation contracts.

## Model Used

Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 (`claude-opus-5-5`) produced the original work
with tool use. OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, assisted with restoration,
integration, tests and review fixes. The Codex session does not expose
its exact serving model ID or context window size.

73526559b5 fix(ui): reload once when a lazy chunk or its CSS fails to load (#17349)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The board UI loads each page as a lazy chunk. Vite adds a preload
step that also loads the CSS of the chunk.
> - Staging error monitoring reported `Unable to preload CSS for
…/assets/issue-detail-CIbQo9zW.css`. The same file name comes from the
current build, so the CSS did not change. One request for the file
failed for a short time.
> - Vite rejects only the first import that asks for a failed file.
Later imports skip that file. On a task page, the first import is the
task-page prefetch, which ignores errors. The page then shows without
its CSS. On other pages that share the CSS, such as Agents, the lazy
route rejects and the route error boundary shows the error.
> - Neither case recovers without a manual reload. This is a routine
retry that the app can do safely, so the app must do it.
> - This pull request reloads the page one time when a chunk or its CSS
fails to load. A loop guard limits this to one reload in five minutes.
> - The benefit is that a stale tab after a deploy, or one failed asset
request, recovers without an error page, without missing styles, and
without error-monitoring noise. An asset that stays broken still shows
the error and still sends a report.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**
A board page showed "This page hit an error" with `Unable to preload CSS
for <origin>/assets/issue-detail-<hash>.css`. On a task page, the same
failure gave no error message, but the page showed without its
stylesheet.

**Steps to reproduce**
1. Build the UI and start the server.
2. Make the first request for `/assets/issue-detail-*.css` fail. The new
Playwright spec does this with `page.route(...).abort("failed")`.
3. Open `/<prefix>/agents`. The route error boundary shows "Unable to
preload CSS".
4. Open `/<prefix>/issues/<id>`. The task shows, but the browser does
not request the task CSS again. The page has no task-page CSS.

**Expected behavior**
The app recovers from a chunk or CSS load failure without user action.
If the failure continues, the app shows the error one time, with no
reload loop.

**Environment**
Hosted staging browser. The local build of current `master` reproduces
it.

I searched open and closed PRs for `preload`, `preloadError`, and `stale
chunk`. I found no related PR.

## What Changed

- `ui/src/lib/chunk-load-recovery.ts` (new): `isChunkLoadError` matches
the Vite CSS preload error and the dynamic import errors from Chromium,
Firefox, and WebKit. `reloadForChunkLoadError` reloads one time. A
`sessionStorage` marker blocks a second reload for five minutes. After
the first reload, later chunk errors in the same document are part of
that reload, so they return "reloading" and do not show an error.
Without `sessionStorage`, the function does not reload, because it
cannot guard against a loop. `startChunkLoadRecovery` listens for
`vite:preloadError`. It does not cancel the event, so the import still
rejects as before.
- `ui/src/main.tsx`: Starts the listener before the first render. The
listener covers every import, including the task-page prefetch that
ignores errors.
- `RouteErrorBoundary` and `AppErrorBoundary`: While a recovery reload
runs, they show a loading state. They do not show the error page and do
not report to Sentry. Other errors work as before.
- Tests: Vitest unit tests for the helper and both boundaries. A new
Playwright spec, `tests/e2e/chunk-load-recovery.spec.ts`, runs against
the real server and the built UI.

## Verification

- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui exec vitest run
src/lib/chunk-load-recovery.test.ts
src/components/RouteErrorBoundary.test.tsx
src/components/AppErrorBoundary.test.tsx`: 21 tests pass.
- Full UI Vitest suite: 793 files, 9,075 tests pass.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` passes. `node
scripts/check-token-gates.mjs` is clean. `node scripts/check-maps.mjs`
passes.
- `npx playwright test --config tests/e2e/playwright.config.ts
chunk-load-recovery.spec.ts`: 3 tests pass.
- Task page with one failed CSS request: one reload, the CSS loads, and
the task shows.
- Agents page with one failed CSS request: one reload, the CSS loads,
and the page shows with no error page.
- CSS that always fails: one reload, then the error page shows. There is
no second reload.
- Red proof: I ran the same spec with the `ui/src` changes removed
(current `master` UI code). Both recovery tests fail. On Agents, the
route error boundary shows `Unable to preload CSS for
http://127.0.0.1:3199/assets/issue-detail-CIbQo9zW.css`. On the task
page, the CSS is never requested again.
- A failure I found and fixed during the work: my first version changed
only the error boundaries. The task-page e2e case failed with that
version, because the prefetch received the error and the boundary never
saw it. The `vite:preloadError` listener fixes that case. All results
above are from the final commit.
- The spec blocks service workers, because Playwright page routes cannot
see requests that a service worker sends. With a worker, a failed
network request for an asset that is not cached also gives
`Response.error()`. Thus the preload error is the same.

## Risks

- A page can reload while a user is on it. This occurs only after a
chunk or CSS load failure, and at most one time in five minutes per tab
session. Without this change, that page already shows an error or shows
without styles. Composer drafts use browser storage, so a reload keeps
them.
- A failure that recovers no longer sends a Sentry event. A failure that
continues after the reload still sends one, so a broken deploy stays
visible.
- The error patterns match browser and Vite message prefixes. If a
browser changes its message, that browser goes back to the current
behavior: the error page and a report.
- No API, schema, or server changes.

## Model Used

- Claude Opus 5.5 (`claude-opus-5-5`) by Anthropic, run as a Paperclip
agent through Claude Code with tool use (shell, file edits, Playwright,
and Vitest).

7b9334cd10 Draft: Build agent-ready design proposal system (#16875)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip helps people manage AI agents and their work.
> - People need consistent UI patterns to review and control that work.
> - The current board uses related layouts and controls with different
spacing, type, and behavior.
> - That drift makes it hard for a designer or an agent to build a new
page from a reliable reference.
> - Storybook can show the shared patterns and the states they need to
support.
> - This pull request adds design proposals, a local sandbox, and
reusable UI controls so people can compare the patterns in context.
> - The benefit is a clearer design system that agents can use to build
consistent UI.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

`ui/` — React board UI and Storybook.

**Problem or motivation**

Board pages repeat visual and interaction decisions. Storybook did not
provide a complete reference for task views, conversation states,
typography, toolbars, tabs, and light/dark colors. People could not
compare a proposed pattern with the running board in one place.

**Proposed solution**

Add a staged Design Proposals catalog with foundations, components,
layouts, and page specimens. Add an opt-in sandbox. Reuse production
components where possible. Include synthetic conversation states and
shared controls so reviewers can compare and refine them.

**Alternatives considered**

Separate static mockups would not show keyboard behavior, responsive
layout, or real component states. Rebuilding each page only in Storybook
would allow the reference to drift from the board.

**Roadmap alignment**

This improves existing board UI and Skills Manager surfaces. It does not
add a new control-plane capability.

## What Changed

- Added dark and light color references, typography and conversation
specimens, and component stories for buttons, tabs, toolbars, sidebar,
popovers, activity, and task lists.
- Added a local design sandbox with synthetic task conversation playback
and representative states.
- Shared collection toolbars and navigation patterns across task, agent,
project, routine, skill, connector, and artifact pages.
- Added the streamlined Skills tabs and a My Skills collection that uses
the shared skill cards.
- Restored saved-thread access during synthetic playback, kept connector
searchbox semantics, and updated reproduction checks after moving trial
stories.
- Documented the proposed patterns and added focused UI, catalog, and
browser checks.

## Verification

- `pnpm check:token-gates`, `node scripts/check-maps.mjs`, and `node
scripts/storybook-catalog.mjs --check` passed.
- Full workspace `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed after
merging master. After the review fixes, focused UI typecheck, `pnpm
build-storybook`, 23 Skills Sources tests, and all 15 Storybook
typography browser tests passed.
- Focused task-thread and system-notice suites passed: 251 tests.
Connector Browse passed 84 tests; the connector, attachment, recovery,
and Storybook flyout browser journeys passed locally.
- A local full Vitest run hit one intermittent chat-channels integration
failure; that test passed in isolation. GitHub CI
[39347996059](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39347996059)
passed on the exact latest commit: 55 successful checks and two skipped
draft-only Storybook jobs.
- Greptile reviewed the exact latest commit at 5/5 with no new comments
or open review threads. GitHub reports the branch as cleanly mergeable.

## Risks

- This PR changes 206 files and exceeds the repository's 100-file review
target. Review by commit and consider a scoped split before merge.
- Design Proposals are staged references. Fixture interactions do not
prove API behavior, permissions, or provider execution.
- UI changes to shared controls may affect pages outside the proposal
sandbox. Focused browser checks and the full CI matrix passed.

## Model Used

- OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact runtime model ID and context
window are not exposed in this session. The model used reasoning, code
execution, browser inspection, and local tests. Earlier branch commits
were also AI-assisted in this Codex conversation.

DottaandPaperclip 22d05644f4 feat(ui): add Speko voice setup, task calls, and Storybook coverage (#15728)
Runtime #15727 is merged. This PR adds the UI. Qualification follows in
#15729.

## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages agent work through tasks and governed connections.
> - Chat connections already bind external conversations to those tasks.
> - Speko handles voice and telephony, while the selected Paperclip
agent does the work.
> - A call needs durable session authority, ordered follow-ups, and safe
result delivery.
> - This PR adds the Speko setup and call controls to the existing Apps
and task UI.
> - This PR depends on #15727. The qualification suite follows
separately. Speko stays experimental.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation**

Phone and browser voice conversations cannot use the chat connection
task lifecycle. A separate voice runtime is needed to preserve task
authority, retries, and reply history.

**Proposed solution**

Add company-scoped voice sessions, signed callbacks, durable replies,
inbound intake, and an agent-facing outbound-call tool. Reuse existing
tasks, queues, secrets, and publications.

**Roadmap alignment**

This extends the experimental chat connector entry points under Agent
Chat and Connected Apps. The project owner requested this feature.

Refs #11418 for the original provider catalog proposal. This
implementation uses the newer chat connection infrastructure rather than
an MCP catalog-only integration. Refs #15721 for remote OpenCode
startup.

## What Changed

- Add the Speko Apps catalog entry, provider artwork, and browser SDK.
- Reuse existing agents in setup. Keep the optional Company Phone Agent
in the catalog, with connection instructions available to any assigned
agent.
- Add task voice controls, transcripts, phone callbacks, inbound-line
settings, and call Activity entries.
- Surface retryable connection and incoming-task inventory failures,
preserve active call controls and cached tasks, restore keyboard focus
after recovery, and bound notification polling so a stuck request cannot
hide later results.
- Put Save & exit and Connect Speko in the credential step’s shared
footer.
- Add deterministic production-component Storybook fixtures for setup,
lifecycle, failures, permissions, and phone surfaces.
- Include voice components in the design guide. Stories never request a
real microphone or place calls.

## Verification

- All 27 focused UI/controller regressions, UI typecheck, token gates,
and 28 map/catalog structural tests pass. The shared connection cache
test covers pause/resume invalidation during the 30-second fresh period.
- Storybook builds 157 Speko production-component stories. The complete
prior 156-story set passed all 624 checks on UI source 249cbc616a. After
the final cache repair, all 152 affected page/launcher checks passed
across both themes, 390/1200 widths and reduced motion. Real microphone
access and external provider requests are blocked.
- Source annotations follow the current generated-catalog contract. No
generated catalog or lockfile is included. Three inherited
GitHub-heading tests passed after master reconciliation.
- Latest-head CI and Greptile review must pass before merge. Local
fixture success does not establish provider or spoken-playback
acceptance.
- The separate integrated browser run passed two journeys and failed
browser answer retrieval. Real browser/telephone playback and timing
acceptance remain outstanding. See the dated qualification report and
E01–E16 runbook. Speko stays experimental.

## Risks

- Voice sessions add migrations and provider-dependent lifecycle
behavior. Migrations preserve existing chat and AI transports.
- Callback origins must be reachable HTTPS. Provider keys and signing
secrets remain vaulted.
- Unverified callers receive task-scoped low-trust authority. Caller ID
does not grant private task access.
- Outbound telephony incurs provider charges. Provider acceptance is not
proof that the caller heard an answer.
- Keep the feature behind the existing experimental chat setting until
the real browser, inbound, outbound, and delayed-result acceptance
matrix passes.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6, with tool use and code execution. The exact serving
model ID and context window are not exposed in this session.

DottaandPaperclip ae6f95ed7a feat: add personal primary agents (#15470)
Add a personal primary agent per company and user. Initialize it from the first human-created agent, expose profile-only switching with confirmation, and use it after recent choices for task and Chat defaults.

Persist authenticated preferences, preserve lifecycle and membership rules, keep selections out of shared audit events, and document the API contract. Include the reviewed Storybook surfaces and regression coverage for concurrent choices, onboarding, cross-device updates, and browser journeys.

DottaandPaperclip c90d904779 feat(apps): add connection intent setup experience (#12347)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The backend now turns agent requests into durable connection
intents.
> - Operators need a clear path to inspect, configure, and finish those
requests.
> - The experience must preserve identity, agent access, and interrupted
setup state.
> - This pull request adds the connection intent setup experience across
the app UI.
> - The benefit is one guided flow from agent request to governed
connection.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #11965

This is stack 9 of 11. It depends on stack 8 and replaces another
reviewable part of #11965.

## What Changed

- Add connection intent cards and setup flow integration.
- Add browse, connection, app detail, and sidebar experience updates.
- Preserve exact draft identity and access choices across resume and
OAuth recovery.
- Add focused UI, architecture, policy, and end-to-end coverage.
- Keep transient retained-connection lookup failures retryable instead
of misclassifying them as missing targets.
- Align the dark-mode E2E contract with the intentionally hidden
Gateways and Profiles sidebar tabs.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck`
- Focused UI result: 372 tests passed across 20 files.
- AppsConnect regression suite: 80/80 passed, including failed
connection and application lookups during retained reconnect.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui exec vitest run
src/components/AppsSidebar.test.tsx` (1 passed)
- `pnpm check:token-gates`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db check:migrations`
- `pnpm build`

## Risks

- An interrupted OAuth flow can leave a durable draft that needs resume.
- The UI resumes the exact draft and keeps its identity and agent access
settings.
- Retained reconnect retries refetch connections and applications
together to avoid mixing partial snapshots.
- Gateways and Profiles remain route-accessible but intentionally absent
from the sidebar until their existing ship gate is lifted.
- The change does not add a database migration.

> I checked `ROADMAP.md`. This stack continues the existing app
connection work from #11965 and does not duplicate another planned item.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-5. The runtime model ID and context window were not
exposed. The model used reasoning, tool use, and code execution.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 8f1e3cfe24 feat(observability): add opt-in Sentry error monitoring for the server and the browser (#12190)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The server and the browser need clear error reports when an operator
enables external monitoring.
> - Paperclip already uses an opt-in OpenTelemetry pattern for server
traces.
> - Sentry can provide error reports for both runtime paths when the
operator sets one data source name.
> - This pull request adds one opt-in Sentry gate for the server and the
browser.
> - The benefit is faster diagnosis while the default setup sends no
Sentry data.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What is improved?**

Paperclip gains optional error monitoring for server and browser
failures.

**Subsystem affected**

Cross-cutting (server, UI, and shared authentication data).

**Current behavior**

Paperclip has no built-in Sentry error capture for server failures or
browser boundary failures. Operators must inspect local logs and browser
tools.

**Proposed behavior**

When the operator sets `SENTRY_DSN`, the server and authenticated
browser use the same Sentry project. When the variable is absent, both
paths stay inactive. The server loads Sentry dynamically and fails open
when the optional package is absent.

**Reason and benefit**

Operators can inspect runtime errors in one Sentry project. The default
setup remains local and sends no monitoring data.

**Breaking changes**

None when `SENTRY_DSN` remains unset. Authenticated session responses
add the optional `sentryDsn` field.

**Additional context**

The implementation uses built-in Sentry privacy options. It disables
default HTTP context and breadcrumb integrations and keeps
`sendDefaultPii` false.

## What Changed

- Add an opt-in server Sentry gate with dynamic package loading and
fail-open behavior.
- Add the Sentry data source name to the authenticated session response.
- Add an authenticated browser Sentry gate and React error boundary
capture.
- Add tests for server, browser, route, and application error paths.
- Document activation, installation, privacy settings, capture behavior,
and operator controls.

## Verification

- Run `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/sentry.test.ts`.
- Run `npx vitest run ui/src/lib/sentry.test.ts`.
- Run `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/auth-routes.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/shutdown.test.ts`.
- Confirm that the full continuous integration suite passes on this pull
request.
- Leave `SENTRY_DSN` unset and confirm that the server and browser gates
stay inactive.
- Set `SENTRY_DSN` and install the optional Sentry packages before a
manual capture check.

## Risks

The operator controls the Sentry project and accepts the data risk when
the operator enables the feature. Error objects can contain messages,
stacks, or cause chains with private values. The default configuration
sends no data because the feature stays off without `SENTRY_DSN`. A
missing optional server package does not stop server boot.

Devin Foley ca02d2463a fix(ui): keep the installed service worker fresh on parked tabs (#12198)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The web UI registers a service worker (`/sw.js`) that caches the app
shell for an offline fallback.
> - Browsers only re-fetch a worker script on navigation or a ~24h
timer, and Paperclip is a parked-tab SPA: a tab can sit open for weeks
without one navigation.
> - An installed worker — and the shell it cached — can therefore keep
serving an old bundle long after a deploy, and the server let `sw.js`
inherit the generic 1h static TTL on top of that.
> - This pull request adds explicit update checks (tab-visible +
hourly), applies a discovered update with one reload while the tab is
hidden, and serves `sw.js` with `Cache-Control: no-cache`.
> - The benefit is that a deploy reaches every open tab within about an
hour, instead of some tabs silently running stale UI indefinitely.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #11292 (the network-first `sw.js` fallback fix; this PR closes the
delivery gap that can keep clients pinned on a pre-#11292 worker).

**What happened?**

A browser that had an older cache-first worker installed kept rendering
a stale app shell — old feature set, old naming — while the server was
verified to be running the current release. Nothing on the client checks
for a new worker outside navigations, so a parked tab never picked up
the fixed worker, and `sw.js` was served with a 1h cache TTL that
further delayed update checks.

**Expected behavior**

Every open tab converges to the deployed bundle shortly after a release,
without users unregistering workers in DevTools or hard-reloading.

**Steps to reproduce**

Install a build's service worker, deploy a newer build, and leave the
tab parked (no navigation): the tab keeps running the old bundle
indefinitely; the worker update check only happens if the user
navigates, and even then a cached `sw.js` can answer it.

## What Changed

- New `ui/src/lib/service-worker-updates.ts`: registers `/sw.js`, runs
`registration.update()` when the tab becomes visible and on an hourly
timer, and on `controllerchange` of a previously-controlled page applies
the update with a single reload — only while the tab is hidden, so an
update never yanks the page mid-session; a takeover while visible defers
the reload to the next hidden transition. First-ever installs never
reload.
- `ui/src/main.tsx`: replaces the fire-and-forget `register()` with the
new module.
- New `server/src/static-ui-cache.ts` (`staticUiCacheControl`):
`index.html` and `sw.js` are served `Cache-Control: no-cache`; other
non-hashed statics keep the 1h default. `server/src/app.ts` uses it in
the static middleware.

## Verification

- `npx vitest run ui/src/lib/service-worker-updates.test.ts` — 8 tests:
registration, hidden-takeover reload (once), deferred reload on visible
takeover, no reload on first install, visibility-triggered and
timer-triggered update checks, cleanup, no-container no-op.
- `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/static-ui-cache.test.ts` — 3
tests incl. the `sw.js.map` lookalike keeping the default TTL.
- `tsc -b` (ui) and `tsc --noEmit` (server) clean; `pnpm check:tokens`
clean.

## Risks

- Behavioral shift: tabs now reload once, while hidden, after a deploy
lands. Unsaved in-page state in a hidden tab is lost at that moment —
the same exposure as a browser discarding a background tab, which SPAs
must already tolerate.
- Self-hosted behavior is otherwise unchanged: same worker script, same
registration URL, one added conditional header.
- Low risk on the server side: the header change only widens
revalidation.

Devin Foley d90f4d488e fix(ui): survive first load against a cold backend without a blank page (#11246)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - The web UI holds live websocket connections for run events,
coordinates cross-tab polling through a leader-election store, and
renders app chrome (sidebar, providers) around a routed outlet
> - When the backend is still cold-starting (managed hosting wake,
server restart, reverse proxy up before the app), the event websockets
refuse connections and the first SPA load mounts against a dead backend
> - In that state the mount cascade can exceed React's nested update
limit (minified error #185); the crash originates in shell hooks outside
the routed error boundary, so React unmounts the entire root to a blank
page, and the dead page keeps retrying the websocket on a flat 1.5s
timer until the user hard-refreshes
> - This pull request removes the wasted nested commits from the
shared-polling subscription path, adds exponential backoff to the
transcript websocket reconnect, and adds a last-resort app-shell error
boundary
> - The benefit is that a cold or briefly unreachable backend degrades
to a recoverable state instead of a blank page that hammers the server

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

No existing issue. Description follows the bug template:

**What happened?**

On the first load against a backend that was still starting, the app
showed its loading animation and then a blank page. The console showed
repeated `WebSocket connection to 'wss://…/api/companies/<id>/events/ws'
failed` lines and `Uncaught Error: Minified React error #185` with a
stack through the shared-polling coordinator's `subscribe`. The
websocket retries continued indefinitely on the dead page. A manual
refresh fixed it.

**Expected behavior**

A backend that is briefly unreachable degrades gracefully: websocket
reconnects back off, the UI keeps rendering from cache, and even a
worst-case crash shows a reload prompt instead of a blank page.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Serve the UI while the backend API is still starting (websocket
upgrades and API calls refused).
2. Load any company page with several shared-polling consumers mounted
(dashboard with sidebar).
3. Observe repeated websocket failures; on affected loads the page goes
blank with React error #185.

## What Changed

- `ui/src/hooks/useSharedPolling.ts`: coordinator snapshot notifications
now keep the previous state object when leadership did not change, so
React bails out instead of scheduling a nested re-render. `subscribe`
invokes its listener synchronously from inside the mount effect with a
fresh object each time; before this change every mount and notify burned
nested-update budget even with no value change — the crash frame in the
field report was exactly this `subscribe → setState` call.
- `ui/src/components/transcript/useLiveRunTranscripts.ts`: the live
event websocket reconnect backs off exponentially (1.5s → 15s cap, reset
on successful open), mirroring `LiveUpdatesProvider`, instead of a flat
1.5s retry.
- `ui/src/components/AppErrorBoundary.tsx` (+ wiring in
`ui/src/main.tsx`): a dependency-free boundary above the router and
providers. `RouteErrorBoundary` only guards the routed `<Outlet />`; a
crash in the shell around it had no boundary, so React unmounted the
root to a blank page. The boundary renders a reload prompt with the
error message.
- Tests: `useSharedPollingSnapshot.test.tsx` (mount costs no extra
commit — fails against the previous code; a real leadership change
re-renders exactly once and ticks stay quiet), a backoff test in
`useLiveRunTranscripts.test.tsx` (delays grow 1.5s → 3s → 6s and reset
after a successful open), and `AppErrorBoundary.test.tsx` (render throw,
effect throw, healthy pass-through).

## Verification

- `pnpm vitest run` in `ui/` over the touched suites (shared polling,
cross-tab poll, transcripts, boundary): 34 tests pass.
- `pnpm typecheck` in `ui/` — clean.
- The snapshot regression test was verified to fail against the
pre-change hook (extra commit per mount).
- Not reproduced end-to-end: the exact 50-update cascade from the field
crash needs a live cold backend; the change removes the identified
per-mount/per-notify nested commits at the reported crash frame, bounds
the reconnect load, and guarantees the shell can no longer blank the
page.

## Risks

Low risk. The snapshot change only suppresses re-renders whose state is
value-identical; leadership changes propagate exactly as before. The
backoff only lengthens retry delays after consecutive failures and
resets on success. The new boundary renders children untouched unless an
error reaches it; behavior on healthy loads is unchanged. Self-hosted
deployments see the same code paths — the cold-backend window simply
rarely occurs there.

Dotta 83765f08d1 fix(ui): reap React 19.2 performance-track measures (memory leak) (#9827)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Its web UI is a long-lived single-page app; users leave tabs open
for hours/days
> - We chased multi-GB tab memory growth through several fixes (#9569,
#9624, #9627, #9701) that cut real churn — but the footprint kept
climbing
> - A heap-snapshot diff on a 12-hour tab finally showed the true cause:
of 13.2M heap nodes, **12.1M were `PerformanceMeasure` objects** — React
19.2 emits a `performance.measure()` per component render for its
DevTools "Performance Tracks" and never clears them
> - These are native objects, so `performance.memory` never reported
them (it read a flat ~74 MB while the real heap was ~308 MB), which is
why our earlier heap/DOM sampling looked stable while the footprint
ballooned
> - This pull request periodically clears the User Timing measure
buffer, since nothing in the app consumes it
> - The benefit is that long-lived tabs stop accumulating millions of
native `PerformanceMeasure` objects, eliminating the remaining unbounded
growth

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

No public GitHub issue exists; describing inline per CONTRIBUTING.md →
"Link Issues or Describe Them In-PR", following the bug report template.
This is the root-cause fix for the memory growth chased in #9569 / #9624
/ #9627 / #9701.

**What happened?**

Long-lived browser tabs grew to multiple GB of memory footprint over
hours/days. A heap snapshot of a 12h tab showed **13.2M nodes, of which
12.1M were `PerformanceMeasure`** (vs ~1.0M total nodes on a fresh tab).
Live capture showed **~340 `performance.measure()` calls/sec**, named
after React components with a `detail.devtools` payload — React 19.2's
"Performance Tracks". Nothing ever clears them, so they accumulate
without bound.

**Expected behavior**

A long-lived tab should not accumulate millions of `PerformanceMeasure`
entries. Idle/long-running tabs should hold a bounded footprint.

**Steps to reproduce**

Open the app (React 19.2 production build), leave a tab open with normal
activity, and run `performance.getEntriesByType('measure').length`
periodically — it climbs unbounded (12.3M after ~12h).
`performance.clearMeasures()` drops it to near-zero and frees the
memory.

**Paperclip version or commit**

Branch `fix/react-perf-measure-leak`, off `master` (after #9701).

**Deployment mode**

Local dev (`pnpm dev` build served by the dev instance), web UI. React
19.2.7. Not adapter-specific.

## What Changed

- **`ui/src/lib/perf-measure-reaper.ts` (new)** —
`startPerfMeasureReaper(intervalMs = 10_000)` clears
`performance.clearMeasures()` on a timer and returns a stop function. It
never calls `getEntriesByType('measure')` (which would materialize the
huge buffer). Honors a `window.__paperclipKeepPerfMeasures = true`
opt-out so a developer recording a React Performance Track in DevTools
can keep the entries.
- **`ui/src/main.tsx`** — start the reaper at app boot.
- Only *measures* are cleared — React's tracks pass explicit start/end
times and leave no marks, and the app doesn't use the User Timing API at
all (verified), so nothing else is affected.

## Verification

- **Root cause proven** by heap-snapshot diff: fresh tab ~1.0M nodes vs
12h tab 13.2M nodes, 12.1M of them `PerformanceMeasure`; live capture
showed ~340 measures/sec with `detail.devtools` and React component
names.
- **Fix proven live**: `performance.clearMeasures()` on the aged tab
dropped the buffer from **12,418,266 → 1,500** and reclaimed the memory
(heap `perf.memory` 308 → 269 MB, plus the ~12M native objects, which
are the bulk of the footprint).
- `vitest`: `perf-measure-reaper.test.ts` — interval clearing, `stop()`,
opt-out flag, and no-API no-op. All pass.
- `tsc -b` clean.

## Risks

Very low, client-only.
- Clearing the User Timing measure buffer only affects the DevTools
Performance panel's React track *history*; normal users never consume
it. Developers who want to record it can set
`window.__paperclipKeepPerfMeasures = true`.
- Only `performance.clearMeasures()` is called (not `clearMarks`), so
any mark-based timing elsewhere is untouched; a grep confirmed the app
makes no `performance.mark()/measure()` calls of its own.
- Adds exactly one 10s interval (negligible), and `clearMeasures()` does
not materialize the buffer.

Note: this is a React 19.2 upstream behavior (its performance tracks are
emitted in the production build and never cleared). If React later gates
or clears them, this reaper can be removed.

DottaandClaude Opus 4.8 3e348b96b9 perf(ui): cut live-updates churn that inflates tab memory (#9624)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Its web UI keeps live views (issue threads, run transcripts,
dashboard) fresh via React Query polling plus a live-events websocket,
coordinated across tabs with a `BroadcastChannel` layer
> - Long-lived tabs viewing live agent runs grew to multi-GB memory
footprints while their JS heap stayed ~60–200 MB — so the memory is
off-heap (Blink/native + committed allocator arenas), not a classic JS
leak
> - Live profiling of a reproduced 2.7 GB / 66 MB tab showed 15–30% idle
CPU, ~3 fetches/sec across overlapping poll loops, and ~8 `setInterval`
create/clear cycles per second whose rate grew ~7× as the tab aged —
relentless allocation churn that inflates committed memory the OS never
reclaims, amplified across tabs by the cross-tab fan-out
> - This pull request cuts that churn at its four largest sources
(invalidation storm, per-instance 1 s timers, redundant polling,
unbounded streamed-run set)
> - The benefit is that idle tabs do far less periodic work, so their
off-heap footprint stops ballooning over a long session

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

No public GitHub issue exists; describing inline per CONTRIBUTING.md →
"Link Issues or Describe Them In-PR", following the bug report template.

**What happened?**

Browser tabs viewing live agent runs grew to 8–16 GB memory footprint
over a long session (multiple tabs open), while each tab's "live" JS
heap stayed only ~150–250 MB. Every idle tab also burned 15–30% CPU.
Tabs eventually approached the ~4 GB V8 heap ceiling / OS pressure and
could crash.

**Expected behavior**

Tabs viewing live runs should hold a bounded footprint and do minimal
work while idle, regardless of how long they stay open or how many tabs
are open.

**Steps to reproduce**

Open several issue/run tabs that have agents actively streaming and
leave them open for a while. Watch Chrome's Task Manager: Memory
Footprint climbs into the GBs while "JavaScript Memory" stays small, and
CPU stays high on idle tabs. Reproduced in ~90 minutes: a tab reached
2.7 GB footprint on a 66 MB JS heap, and the per-second timer-churn rate
was ~7× higher on a 90-minute-old tab than a fresh one.

**Paperclip version or commit**

Branch `fix/live-updates-churn`, off `master`.

**Deployment mode**

Local dev (`pnpm dev`), web UI. Not adapter-specific — core UI
live-updates plumbing (observed with `claude_local` / `codex_local`
runs).

## What Changed

- **`ui/src/lib/query-invalidation-batcher.ts` (new)** —
`createInvalidationBatcher` throttles + de-dupes React Query
invalidations into one flush per ~300 ms, and
`createCoalescingQueryClient` wraps the client via a `Proxy` so only
`invalidateQueries` is batched (optimistic `setQueryData` writes stay
immediate). Wired into `LiveUpdatesProvider`, which previously
invalidated synchronously on every websocket event.
- **`ui/src/hooks/useSecondTick.ts` (new)** — one shared, ref-counted,
page-wide 1 s ticker. `useLiveElapsed` in `IssueChatThread` now uses it
instead of a per-instance `setInterval` that forced a full-thread
re-render every second per live element.
- **`ui/src/components/transcript/useLiveRunTranscripts.ts`** — when the
realtime websocket is enabled, the recurring log poll backs off to a 30
s safety-net cadence instead of polling every 2 s on top of the live
stream. Added a marker for the durable poll→push rearchitecture.
- **`ui/src/lib/issueChatTranscriptRuns.ts`** —
`resolveIssueChatTranscriptRuns` now caps the streamed run set
(live/active runs always kept; most-recent linked runs fill up to 20) so
a large run history can't open a live-transcript poll per historical
run.
- **`ui/src/main.tsx`** — explicit `gcTime` so cross-tab-published cache
entries for unobserved resources are collected promptly.
- Tests for the batcher, shared ticker, and run cap.

## Verification

- `vitest`: new suites `query-invalidation-batcher.test.ts` (batcher
collapses 20 invalidations → 1 flush; keeps distinct keys/variants;
dispose cancels; proxy passes non-invalidate methods through),
`useSecondTick.test.tsx` (single ref-counted timer, stops when idle),
`issueChatTranscriptRuns.test.ts` (cap keeps newest + live). All pass.
- Existing affected suites pass: `LiveUpdatesProvider` (23),
`IssueChatThread` (), `useLiveRunTranscripts`,
`AgentDetail.instructions` — 109 tests across affected files.
- `tsc -b` clean.
- Behavior confirmed by live profiling before the change (2.7 GB / 66 MB
tab, ~8 interval churns/sec growing 7× with age). Runtime churn
reduction should be re-measured against a rebuilt bundle with the same
instrumentation.

## Risks

Low-to-moderate; all changes reduce work rather than add features.
- **Invalidation batching** delays live-driven refetches by up to ~300
ms. Optimistic `setQueryData` writes (e.g. the visible issue's new
comment) remain immediate, so foreground updates still feel instant;
only the safety-net refetch is throttled. Non-live invalidations (user
actions, mutations) are unaffected — they use the real client.
- **Poll back-off** relies on the websocket as the live source when
realtime is enabled; a 30 s fallback poll still covers gaps/reconnects
(both the transcript hook and `LiveUpdatesProvider` also
auto-reconnect).
- **Run cap (20)** means an issue with a very large run history streams
live transcripts only for its live/active + 20 most-recent runs; older
runs still open normally via their run pages.
- Downstream test fallout (timing-sensitive tests around
invalidation/polling) may need adjustment — flagged intentionally for
follow-up.

Durable follow-up (out of scope, marked in code): replace transcript/run
polling with server push (SSE/websocket deltas) so idle tabs do no
periodic work at all.

DottaandPaperclip 424e81d087 Improve operator workflow QoL (#5291)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is a control plane operators use repeatedly to supervise
agent companies.
> - Common operator workflows depend on fast scanning of inboxes, issue
sidebars, workspaces, cost totals, and runtime services.
> - Several small UI and service gaps made those workflows slower or
less clear.
> - This pull request groups the operator-facing QoL changes that can
stand alone from recovery and adapter work.
> - The benefit is a denser, clearer board experience for issue triage
and workspace operation.

## What Changed

- Added inbox assignee/project grouping and issue list token/runtime
totals.
- Improved issue properties with removable blocker chips and workspace
task links.
- Improved execution workspace layout, runtime controls, issues tab
default, and stopped-port reuse behavior.
- Added mobile markdown/routine dialog fixes, page title company names,
sidebar polish, and dashboard run task label cleanup.

## Verification

- `pnpm install --frozen-lockfile`
- `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/lib/inbox.test.ts
ui/src/components/IssueProperties.test.tsx
ui/src/components/WorkspaceRuntimeControls.test.tsx
server/src/__tests__/workspace-runtime.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/costs-service.test.ts`

## Risks

- Medium UI risk because this touches several operator surfaces. The
branch is intentionally grouped around workflow/QoL files and keeps the
file count below the Greptile limit.

## Model Used

- OpenAI GPT-5 Codex via Paperclip `codex_local` adapter, with
shell/git/GitHub CLI tool use.

## Checklist
