DottaandPaperclip 1f55073f96 fix(cursor-cloud): support API-only controllers on managed stacks (#18310)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip helps people manage AI agents at work.
> - Cursor Cloud hosts execution behind its API.
> - Product setup still expected a Paperclip Computer.
> - Managed-only tenants therefore rejected valid setup.
> - This admits the validated API-owned controller.
> - Authority, Stop proof, budgets and cleanup remain enforced.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #18068 and #18069; both dependencies have merged.

**What happened?**

Managed-only setup still requested a Computer. Live tests exposed
missing Cursor Stop proof and duplicate replay.

**Expected behavior**

Use Cursor’s API controller. Verify provider/controller termination and
replay each log identity once.

**Steps to reproduce**

Enable native Runner/managed-only. Configure Cursor model/repository/key
without a Computer, then Test, finish setup, run and Stop.

## What Changed

- Derive API-only placement from validated native Cursor configuration;
reject placement/command/workspace/home overrides and keep
Kubernetes-only execution closed.
- Skip Computers/checkout/workspace realization. Keep scoped tools,
completion, private staging, budgets, leases and recovery. Persist
placement; reject contradictions.
- Align Cloud cards, Test, Save and Finish setup; hold unready drafts.
Legacy keeps its Computer, credential and policy checks.
- Verify Stop from exact API ownership, audited intent,
provider-terminal proof, no Computer/process ownership and controller
retirement. Recheck immediate/deferred retirement; wake existing
recovery on durable evidence.
- Clear warnings when the actual stopped target later has authoritative
confirmation. Keep missing/other-run negatives and the existing
predicate.
- Publish safe status refresh after full-proof ACK. Retain bounded
native/physical cancellation history; add no poller or weaker proof
path.

## Verification

Core merged as `3910352c923a`; Product merged as `27d35314be8e`. Public
branch `5f86eb66b081` has tree `67344151d303`. Its exact-head Greptile
summary is 5/5; the fresh audit found zero unresolved threads and
complete pagination. The controlled workspace retry and required summary
passed. All 59 current-head contexts are terminal and clean. Prior
green-36 evidence keeps its identity.

[Current
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/41680511731)
first failed workspaces-a 1/2: the CLI company-import/export beforeAll
30-second runtime-info/child-PID/HTTP readiness wait expired. All 431 UI
files/4,714 tests and 285 other CLI tests passed (one skip). The cause
remains UNKNOWN. Child output records startup recovery complete, but
buffered CI prefixes do not establish its relation to the waiter
deadline; runtime-file/PID/last-health state was not captured. Both
unchanged local probes were RED. The second observed dependency
preflight still pending at the deadline; observer overhead was not
quantified. Neither proves the CI cause. After all functional jobs
finished, only the queued metadata summary was cancelled; the other 48
records stayed unchanged. Attempt 1 retains 46 successes, the original
failure, one skip and the cancelled summary. One same-head debug retry
was admitted at 18:42 UTC on November 3. Its workspace job passed at
19:23 UTC on the same checkout: UI 431 files/4,714 tests and CLI 33
files/286 tests, including company import/export. Test caching was
disabled. The new `ci / verify` summary passed; workflow attempt 2
completed SUCCESS. Required `ci / e2e` also passed. The final check at
19:53 UTC on November 3 found all 59 current-head contexts terminal and
clean: zero pending and zero failing. The 47 inherited completed/skipped
rows are not new executions. No code, assertion or timeout changed;
success does not explain the original failure or erase the local REDs.

CI checkout is `1ea9d8608ced`/tree `78cb1ec13d59` (parents
`2e37c73c05fe`, 5f86); both workflows use 2e37. Its 20 extra paths add
low-memory build/Rust task-memory. Scripts cohere; later matrix changes
only labels, with no newer debug-cache steps. Static audit found no
blocker. Supported API arguments omit the memory flag: no default
monitor/instruction changes. Flagged external launchers can change
Cursor instructions/digests and remain unqualified.

The merge added 41 master-identical paths, retained the green-36 inbox
hunk and found UI fixtures matching upstream. Startup/backup, recovery
projection, sleep diagnostics and binary backup change production.
Static audit found eight Stop/ACK owner blobs and 37 sleep-work SQL
templates unchanged, with sleep fences/single-flight accounting intact.
Exact precommit tree: 416/416 across eight server files, binary backup
1/1, server types PASS; repeated scopes are not summed.

The deferred-retirement P1 reproduced three real-DB/owned-process
failures; missing proof stayed unverified. Recovery passed 47 process
cases/33 proof negatives. Warning repair binds actual targets to
same-run proof. Validation passed 729 scoped UI cases, a separate
359-case thread run, 111 backend cases (84 CAS, 6 assembled, 21
activity/privacy), types/tokens. Proof validators/predicate are
unchanged; no new poller or increased timeout.

The d8d3 attempt stays FAILED: 45 passes, two workspaces-a failures,
derived verify failure and one skip. Both shards shared three failures:
two successful mocks omitted the account guard’s required userId. The
two-line fixture repair changed no guard, assertion or timeout. Three
failures reproduced; 54 access/auth tests then passed, including
account-change/denial negatives, plus UI types/tokens.

The 69285 attempt stays FAILED: 49 jobs, 46 passed, serialized shard 9
failed, its verify aggregate failed and one selection job skipped. The
shard passed 575/576 cases. Its aborted-snapshot case expected nine
computes but saw eight: a final HTTP 200 coalesced while seven ordinary
reads had not proved the aborted compute settled. Earlier CI and the
unmodified local baseline passed with a miss; no local RED is claimed.
The repair awaits the snapshot, allows exactly one extra GET if
coalesced, then requires a miss and retains nine computes/all HTTP429
assertions. No production code, hook, loop, sleep or timeout changed.
Six inbox and seven cache/admission cases passed locally, plus server
types; 30 unrelated cases were filtered. Green 36 passed 576/576 without
taking the extra-GET branch; local runs also missed that schedule.
Current CI event merge 1ea9 now passed 576/576 and naturally exercised
the former failure: coalesced (count 2, 1ms), then exactly one fresh
miss (count 1, 16ms), with strict nine-compute/HTTP429 assertions
intact. No instrumentation or retry was added.

Earlier compatibility passed scoped remote/inbox, routine, API-placement
and UI tests, plus types/migrations/snapshots/maps/tokens. The 89-path
adoption restored fleet routing without workflow overrides or added
skips. Each result retains its source identity.

Live qualification remains actual `9af1a5de42a2`: unchanged Artifact
grader PASSED 17/17 and active-Stop grader PASSED 21/21. All three
provider test resources were deleted canonically with GET404;
post-delete download returned the exact 27 bytes. Histories stayed
stable (Artifact 121 and Stop 67 canonical identities), with 21 company
runs, zero active work and no accounting/cancellation/reservation debt
or integrity findings. Saved settings reopened; no-prompt Test/Linux
admission passed with `claude-sonnet-4-5`. No new Save is claimed.

The first Stop sampling case stays FAILED on a 10.373-second gap.
Unchanged retry kept all 24 samples: 35.076 seconds quiet, maximum gap
4.584 seconds, plus a separate CANCELLED/artifact-absent read after 180
seconds. Initial grading rejected locator spelling before functional
checks; metadata changed only after same-file/inode/byte proof, with raw
evidence/oracles unchanged. Original Question/Plan/reconnect and
historical deleted-artifact results keep their identities.

Git trees verified 11 history-only conflicts and six earlier mainline
paths. Hosted 9af to the public BRANCH differs in 222 paths; 13,500
other mode/blob leaves match. Runner runtime implementations and six
observer/driver pins match 9af on that branch only; inherited
`drivers/acpx/runtime-host.test.ts` differs. No all-Runner/src,
CI/latest-master runtime or image equality is claimed. Later static
audits through `8ab89f41e499` found no concrete API-only blocker. That
base adds completed-history sleep proofs and an MCP cleanup migration;
protected Stop/ACK owners are unchanged. These later changes are outside
this CI and have no live qualification here. Host duplicate-card and
later recovery/UI repairs retain separate proof, not deployed 9af
identity. Direct-key coverage requires absent aiConnection; API-only
placement skips inherited remote-workspace disk-full paths, and
config-read gates match their parent.

Other retained failures: stale fixture 132/133; E8 48/135 with 87
reset-hook failures; Mac 17 SQL failures/skips;
title/startup/custody/Stop/deletion unknown causes and bounded
recoveries; superseded warning/50 duplicate identities; pre-repair
ACK/Core CI failures. Fixture RED/GREEN passed 7/7 browser and 121/121
shutdown tests with a failing broken-unsubscribe control; stable WSP
wrapper passed 128 after physical teardown failure. No full local-suite
pass is inferred. All paid attempts remain recorded; vendor dollar cost
is UNKNOWN.

## Risks

Experimental: Cursor independently acknowledges neither the effective
model nor instruction digest before the first prompt. Explicit values
are submitted and behavior checked live; unpriced provider dollar cost
stays UNKNOWN.

The placement exception applies only to validated native Cursor API
execution. Other local work remains denied under managed-only policy.
Missing/stale Stop or cleanup proof stays pending; damaged archives
remain failed. Explicit Legacy keeps its existing policy owners.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex/GPT-6 family: tools, execution, browser checks, delegated
review. API ID/context window unavailable.

DottaandPaperclip 27d35314be feat: connect experimental Cursor Cloud to native Runner (#18069)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip helps people manage AI agents at work.
> - Native Runner owns execution and task authority.
> - Operators need an explicit native Cursor Cloud choice.
> - Tools/files need company, task, session and run scope.
> - This connects setup and lifecycle to Runner Core.
> - Legacy agents retain their selected runtime/history.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Depends on #18068. Managed-only API placement and API-owned Stop
containment are in #18310. Refs #5664, #11803, #17299, and #17471. No
duplicate native integration was found.

## What Changed

- Add explicit native setup, Test, saved settings and dispatch with
no-prompt account/catalog/callback checks.
- Scope MCP to company, agent, task, session and run through
authenticated HTTPS. Register verified artifacts/work products; preserve
unpriced accounting, completion and budgets.
- Connect Question/Plan continuation, cold handoff and admitted fresh
sessions; recheck waiting admission under the task lock.
- Present audited Stop intent while preserving physical containment
proof; bound typed Stop metadata. Preserve title edits through
preference/navigation readiness.
- Select one live/history representation per run to prevent duplicate
settled cards. Integrate upstream task/read-state/retry/schema contracts
and repair two test fixtures.

## Verification

Core #18068 merged normally as `3910352c923a`. Product head
`5a60f541c982` has passing repository CI/build/browser checks, including
required `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`, plus a fresh exact-head Greptile
5/5 review with zero unresolved threads. Two non-required external app
checks remain pending: Paperclip Review is queued waiting for its
assigned agent; Superagent Security Scan is reviewing the diff. These
are not claimed completed. The normal merge endpoint enforces the
repository rules; no policy or status override is used. The dependent
Top PR is addressing its fresh deferred-Stop review finding.

Product `5a60f541c982` passed 270 UI and 20 selected
Cloud/native/disk-full tests, UI/server typechecks, tokens and maps.
Top’s clean normal merge passed tokens/maps/diff checks; its matrix is
pending. Earlier receipts retain Core’s 47 Rust, 4 compiled-native
retirement and 19 settlement controls, normal Runner build, and runtime
9af build/recursive typecheck. Reproduced loading/shutdown CI fixture
failures passed 7/7 browser and 121/121 unit tests, including a
broken-unsubscribe negative control. No timeout/oracle was relaxed.

The actual-parent restack adopts 75 mainline paths, including
schema/permission and generic runtime changes, beyond the prior two
fixture repairs and client projection fix. The full difference from
hosted `9af1a5de42a2` is therefore larger than four files; backend
source also differs. The merged config-read checks match Core391, and
the Cursor placement/runtime/relay/selection modules match frozen9af;
selected affected regressions pass. Paid proof keeps its actual 9af
source/image identity. The separately tested live/history card fix is
not claimed deployed on that host.

On 9af, original saved settings survived reopening and fresh no-prompt
Test authenticated catalog/model/binding; no new Save is claimed. Fresh
Linux admission passed. With `claude-sonnet-4-5`, Artifact downloaded
exact 27 bytes and matched 121 canonical identities in complete
S3-served history. First Stop’s strict quiet FAILED on a 10.373-second
gap despite independent cancellation/no late artifact. One targeted
unchanged-sampler retry retained all 24 samples: 35.076 seconds quiet /
maximum gap 4.584 seconds, 67 ordered canonical identities, and separate
CANCELLED/artifact-absent status after the original 180-second deadline.
The pre-reload duplicate settled card is disclosed. Exact-ID cleanup for
the three new provider agents is awaiting authorization, so full grades
and the fresh Artifact’s post-cleanup download remain blocked. A
historical deleted-provider artifact was newly downloaded on 9af;
original F226 Question/Plan/reconnect and cleanup proof keep their
identities.

Retained failures: stale fixture 132/133; E8 48/135 with 87 reset-hook
failures; Mac 17 SQL failures/skips; earlier
title/startup/custody/Stop/deletion failures with unknown causes/bounded
recoveries; `dea023` Stop’s warning/50 duplicate identities; pre-repair
ACK and original Core CI failures. WSP’s 251-assertion, 7/8-suite
attempt failed physical PostgreSQL teardown; the unchanged wrapper rerun
passed 128. Retry alone establishes no cause or full local-suite pass.
All paid attempts remain recorded; vendor dollar cost is UNKNOWN.

## Risks

Experimental: Cursor independently acknowledges neither the effective
model nor instruction digest before the first prompt. Explicit values
are submitted and checked through behavior; unpriced provider dollar
cost stays UNKNOWN.

Callbacks need authenticated reachable HTTPS. Scope, revocation,
budgets, completion and cleanup remain authoritative. Operator Stop
intent is separate from physical containment. Saved legacy agents retain
their selected runtime. Prior shared title-save/deletion failures remain
disclosed.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, assisted with reasoning, repository tools,
code execution, browser verification, and delegated code review. The
serving model’s exact API ID and context window are not exposed. No
value is inferred from the model catalog.

DottaandPaperclip 61bd4ac691 feat(agents): set up Antigravity with saved Google subscriptions (#18189)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages agents and their work.
> - Users choose providers and managed accounts while adding agents.
> - Antigravity was missing from the ordinary additional-agent picker
and its saved Google path did not complete native readiness.
> - A user needs a successful Test, an enabled task action, and a stable
account binding.
> - This pull request connects the ordinary setup flow to the native
candidate.
> - It also preserves retired credential refreshes across database
failures and server restarts.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Built on merged #18188 and #18187. Refs: #12503, #14938 for related
legacy CLI proposals.

**Agent or provider**

Google Antigravity ACP 1.4.3.

**Why this adapter is useful**

Users need to set up an Antigravity agent and run real work through
their managed Google subscription.

**How the agent is invoked**

Native Paperclip Runner uses the pinned Antigravity ACP runtime. Exact
operator admission remains required; the local candidate result does not
enable general release.

## What Changed

- Show Google Antigravity in the ordinary adapter grid and preserve the
draft choice when setup resumes.
- Reuse the same user’s saved personal default Google subscription and
discover the exact low model through the native account.
- Run a prompt-free native Test and wait for authoritative readiness
before enabling task assignment.
- Carry the managed account through native runs and recover retired
refreshes through the existing encrypted, fsynced journal with exact
generation checks.
- Retain the latest rotated credential through verification, storage,
and partial home-removal failures. Retry the exact account’s retained
cleanup before another provider use.
- Reconcile cleanup before taking the credential mutation lock, fence
owners arriving during lock acquisition, and support nested lock holders
without a join cycle.
- Bound sign-in retirement outside database transactions and preserve
claims for the existing cleanup owner; one pending sign-in does not
block unrelated accounts.
- Cover Gemini and Pi API-key recovery, keep API-key bulk manual-model
editing usable, and keep adapter discovery available after candidate
expiry.
- Skip taskless native timer work before run or credential admission.
Preserve current master monitor and deadline scheduling.

## Verification

- The registered local saved-Google-subscription journey passed all 16
matchers in 196,520 ms using eval source `12aba` against actual serving
source `4a37ee7c`. Both turns stayed in one conversation, produced exact
downloaded files of 61 and 119 bytes after reload, and used distinct
native primary processes. All observed owners retired, leases released,
and credential fences settled. Independent readback confirmed Done work,
no active owned runs, a connected saved account, and the retained agent
paused for inspection.
- The measured runtime is production-equivalent to pre-restack
`65ef31dc` except its test-only transport fixture correction.
Current-master head `ff7c9249` preserves all 99 product paths: 98 exact
blobs and only eight inherited plugin-panel lines in `agents.ts`. Its
native binary was rebuilt for inherited Codex-only diagnostic changes;
the changed Rust behavior is outside Antigravity's ACPX execution path.
Shared native/UI changes have focused regression coverage. The recorded
live result is not represented as a measured replay of `ff7c9249`.
- Full workspace build and typecheck passed on `ff7c9249`. All 376
focused tests in 14 files passed, covering Google credential/retirement
controls and the inherited native-tool, redaction, route, and UI
recovery changes. Token gates, maps, and diff checks passed. The
required-close fixture was separately demonstrated red, then passed all
317 selected provider-wiring cases.
- [Current-head
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40959387972)
is green: 55 successful checks, two skipped workflow checks, and an
optional neutral review check. Required `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`
passed. Greptile and Paperclip Review both report 5/5 on exact
`ff7c9249`, with zero unresolved review threads.
- This qualifies the selected operator-authorized local
saved-subscription candidate. The original exploratory journey remains
historical evidence; the repeatable fixed-driver eval is in the next PR.

## Risks

- Google refresh recovery must preserve the exact grant, account, and
credential generation. An uncertain native owner or failed encrypted
handoff retains the private home and blocks cleanup.
- A successful local saved-subscription candidate does not qualify fresh
OAuth, API keys, Cloud, Linux, other models, or general release.
- Timer filtering changes only taskless native Runner admissions.
Existing task-bound monitors and legacy adapters retain their owners.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex (GPT-6). The host did not expose the exact model revision
or context limit. The model used tools for code edits, tests, and
review.

DottaandPaperclip b14e1ecaf8 feat: add a complete agent YAML configuration editor (#18036)
<!-- entire-trail-link-start -->
https://entire.com/gh/paperclipai/-/trails/175/changes/paperclip/175
<!-- entire-trail-link-end -->

## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Operators configure each agent through several settings tabs.
> - Operators also need one complete, editable configuration document.
> - The document must retain each resource service's access and
validation rules.
> - This pull request defines the `paperclip/v1` Agent YAML format and
adds an Advanced editor.
> - The editor previews changes, rejects stale core writes, and explains
partial saves.
> - Operators can edit agent settings in one place and verify the saved
state after reload.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #2219. Related settings work: #10974.

**Problem or motivation**

Agent configuration spans profile, runtime, instructions, skills, tools,
channels, permissions, secrets, keys, and revision history. Operators
cannot inspect and edit those settings as one versioned YAML document.

**Proposed solution**

Add an Advanced agent tab with a YAML editor. Define a shared document
schema. Read and write resources through their existing APIs. Separate
editable settings, explicit commands, and read-only observed state.

**Alternatives considered**

A raw agent-row editor would omit related resources. A generic database
update would bypass resource ownership. The editor therefore uses the
existing resource contracts and records partial results when a later
request fails.

**Roadmap alignment**

This extends the shipped agent configuration capability. It relates to
easy AGENTS.md configuration, multi-harness teams, governed tool access,
and secrets management. Stored credentials remain redacted. This format
is an editable settings view; it does not add company portability or
provider consent.

## What Changed

- Add the `paperclip/v1` Agent document schema and format documentation.
- Add the Advanced route, sidebar entry, YAML editor, validation, change
summary, save progress, and reload recovery.
- Cover core settings, instruction files, skill pins, tool
installs/profiles/policies, channels, permissions, secret operations,
API keys, and revision restore.
- Add private-keyed configuration revisions checked under the agent
write lock. Read the current key through its owner so file-based
rotation does not require restarting the server. Preserve unchanged
secret markers at their original paths.
- Retain drafts and returned credentials after partial saves. Require
reload before retrying commands. Prevent duplicate submissions. Keep new
key tokens visible through rename and disable saves with an empty change
plan.
- Send only changed channel settings. Require explicit intent for shared
profile edits. Load destination instruction files when changing their
location.
- Update Storybook fixtures, verification maps, and regression tests.
Add browser acceptance through real APIs and PostgreSQL.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck` passes.
- `pnpm build` passes.
- The focused UI suite passes all 50 tests. The API/revision helper
suites pass all 93 tests.
- All 65 lifecycle tests pass with a dedicated PostgreSQL database. They
exercise real row locks, redaction, revision history, audit, and company
access.
- All six browser acceptance cases pass. They check saved settings and
clears, secret redaction, key creation/revocation, stale drafts,
lost-response recovery, instruction relocation, revision restore, and
key-token retention through rename. The tests use real resource APIs and
storage. The MCP target uses the existing local provider fixture. No
model run or provider login is claimed.
- Signing-key regressions cover both environment changes and real
in-place key-file rotation. The protected database save/fencing cases
pass after removing the cache. A local measurement of 1,000 file-backed
revision calculations took 48 ms.
- `pnpm check:token-gates`, `node scripts/check-maps.mjs`, and Storybook
catalog checks pass.
- The full [PR CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40725425470)
passes on `34ed97bbf9`: all 48 jobs, including all eight browser shards.
Greptile is 5/5 on this commit, with no unresolved review threads. This
final commit refreshes CI after a runner-routing fallback; its source
tree matches `fb4cf488cf`.
- Paperclip Review and Superagent Security Scan ended neutral because
their external agents did not complete a valid assessment/receipt.
Superagent passed on `fb4cf488cf`, which has the identical source tree.
One request to retry the final scan returned HTTP 404. Neither check
reports a code finding.
- The local full-suite attempt was blocked by host System V semaphore
exhaustion. Acceptance and lifecycle verification used an isolated
PostgreSQL 18 container. Earlier CI runners were interrupted. A local
combined run hit hook/test timeouts; the full 88-test route file passed
after the builds finished. The final full CI run passes. Earlier failure
logs and browser traces remain retained outside the repository.

To run the browser regression:

```sh
pnpm exec playwright test --config tests/e2e/playwright.config.ts tests/e2e/agent-configuration.spec.ts
```

## Risks

- Multi-resource saves are sequential. Earlier operations can remain
saved if a later operation fails. The editor reports the completed steps
and requires reload.
- Core settings and managed instruction files have atomic revision/hash
checks. Other unversioned resource writes and external supporting files
retain a race window after preflight.
- Shared profile definitions affect other bindings. The editor requires
`updateSharedDefinition: true` for those edits.
- The editor follows native service normalization and experimental
settings. Canonical reload can add generated access profiles or mask
environment values.
- New editor dependencies require the repository's normal automated
lockfile update. This pull request does not edit the lockfile or add a
database migration.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact current model version was not
exposed. The work used reasoning, repository tools, code execution, and
browser automation. Earlier work in this chat used the configured Codex
model before a model switch; its exact model ID and context window were
not exposed. The current context window size is also not exposed.

## Checklist

DottaandPaperclip f60ac29cf1 fix(runner): migrate Grok Build with native reasoning effort (#17922)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Harness selection maps supported agents to Paperclip Runner.
> - The native Runner already supports Grok Build, but its migration
mapping excludes Grok.
> - Grok agents also have a thinking-effort setting that the native
execution contract does not carry.
> - This pull request adds the migration path and preserves explicit
Grok effort through startup and resume.
> - Operators can upgrade an existing Grok agent without silently losing
its model, account, or effort.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Existing Grok Build agents have no Runner selector or upgrade action.
Adding only the mapping would route conversion through the Codex
fallback and lose Grok execution semantics. Native execution also
ignores the legacy reasoning-effort field.

**Expected behavior**

A qualified Grok agent can explicitly upgrade. The saved model, account,
instructions, history, and supported effort remain intact. Unsupported
legacy settings fail before saving. The provider must acknowledge the
selected effort before inference.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Open the runtime page of an existing Grok Build agent on a qualified
Linux x64 or macOS ARM64 computer.
2. Observe that the Runner selector and upgrade action are absent.
3. Compare the native execution input with the saved legacy
reasoning-effort setting.

Related work: #13882 introduced native Grok Build. #15422 covers the
earlier default-runner work. This change extends the current shared
selection contract.

## What Changed

- Add the Grok harness mapping, qualified platform limits, upgrade
action, and company-scoped computer qualification.
- Translate Grok settings to ACPX without changing the selected account
or explicit model. Resolve the legacy default model to the native
default. Preserve the effective legacy search policy. Reject
incompatible command, argument, permission, and turn-limit settings.
- Add native execution input v10 for explicit Grok effort and search
policy. Preserve historical schemas. Enforce disabled search through
Grok requirements and bind it across startup and recovery.
- Apply and verify ACP `reasoning_effort` before prompting. Bind the
value to provider descriptors, checkpoints, runtime identity, and resume
checks.
- Use the Grok catalog and effort choices in the task composer. Apply
task model and effort overrides while retaining the agent account and
search policy. Update runtime controls, portability/default handling,
documentation, and capability maps.
- Advance Pi and Copilot source attestations for changed shared
transport and recovery code. Keep historical identities intact and
update all Rust integration fixtures.

## Verification

- Migration and review regressions were reproduced before the fixes.
Coverage includes the Grok mapping, default model, explicit effort,
implicit search policy, task overrides, and incompatible legacy
settings. The broad migration, route, immutable-input, and composer
check passed 478 tests. The final catalog and task-input check passed
135 tests.
- Runner startup, recovery, search policy, and profile checks passed 361
tests, with one platform skip. The final source-identity,
search-admission, and transport event-pump check passed 89 tests.
- All 757 Rust workspace tests passed for the broad implementation.
After the final source attestation update, all 55 ACPX profile/session
tests passed.
- `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed for the implementation.
Server and Runner typecheck passed after the final production change.
Server `tsc --noEmit` passed after the final test-fixture change. Docker
context integrity, token gates, maps, generated protocol data, and
replay goldens passed.
- The v10 startup fixture initially used an ambient local Grok login and
failed on CI. An explicitly empty credential home reproduced all four
failures. The fixture now supplies a synthetic key and a private empty
home. A separate case checks that missing credentials fail closed. All
seven selected Grok v10 and Claude v9 startup cases pass without host
credentials.
- The full local suite could not complete because embedded PostgreSQL
failed before database-backed fixture setup. The broad executor-suite
attempt hit the same limit and was stopped. Neither attempt is counted
as passing. Current-head CI must verify those paths before merge.
- Earlier CI found missing Rust input fields, stale source attestations
and exact fixture pins, a missing Docker context entry, and an outdated
import expectation. Those failures were fixed and checked locally. The
CI logs retain the original failures.
- Different earlier CI runs also failed unchanged cleanup pagination,
device-login timeout, and chat lost-response recovery cases. Later
attempts passed the cleanup and login cases without changes to those
implementations. Their causes remain unproven. The original evidence
remains in [the first
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40563402840),
[the login
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40571128328),
and [the chat
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40573072163).
A passing retry does not establish a root-cause fix.
- Both reviews rate current head
`16fba9b4cdf12bc7945e6628912e79da42959f35` 5/5. All current-head CI
gates pass in [run
40576580699](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40576580699).
All 60 check runs completed cleanly, including the four intentional
skips and the neutral 5/5 Paperclip review. The legacy security status
is successful. No review threads remain unresolved.
- Staging migration and a real shell task are pending deployment. This
PR does not claim full Grok provider qualification. Reviewers can verify
the operator path by upgrading a qualified Grok agent, checking its
saved model and effort, and running a shell task through native
execution.

## Risks

- Explicit effort and search policy require the matching Runner and
sidecar build. Older immutable execution inputs keep their existing
schemas.
- Providers that omit or reject the selected effort fail before a
prompt. Unsupported effort does not fall back silently.
- Existing agents retain their saved runner until an explicit change.
New Grok agents use native execution only on qualified platforms.
- Grok token and cost reporting remain unverified, as before.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact serving model ID and
context-window capacity are not exposed in this session. Used reasoning,
source editing, shell execution, and browser inspection.

DottaandPaperclip 87bf89756e fix: support Daytona runner upgrades and ignore obsolete Claude options (#17361)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Existing Claude and Codex agents can upgrade to Paperclip Runner.
> - A Daytona computer needs platform qualification before Runner
becomes its default.
> - The upgrade notice required that default, so it hid the action that
could start qualification.
> - Saved Claude turn limits also caused conversion to fail even though
Runner can run without them.
> - This pull request verifies the computer on click and ignores
obsolete Claude options with a warning.
> - Agents retain their model, account, environment, instructions, and
permission policy.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Related: #17122.

**What happened?**

A legacy Claude agent on a Daytona snapshot had no upgrade button until
its environment had platform qualification. A saved `maxTurnsPerRun:
1000` then caused conversion to return HTTP 422.

**Expected behavior**

The upgrade action verifies a supported Daytona computer and converts
the agent. Unsupported tuning options produce a visible warning and do
not block execution.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Create a legacy Claude agent with `maxTurnsPerRun: 1000` on an active
Daytona snapshot.
2. Open Runtime before the environment has platform qualification.
3. Try to upgrade to Paperclip Runner.

**Paperclip version or commit**

After #17122, reproduced against `9c442cf48e`.

## What Changed

- Offer upgrade on probe-capable Daytona snapshots and immutable sandbox
images. Perform the public environment probe only after a click. Save
after fresh adapter discovery confirms support.
- Resolve the actual computer for explicit, instance-default, and hidden
managed environments. Preserve pending edits and reject stale probe
results.
- Ignore Claude `maxTurnsPerRun`, `chrome`, `warmHandleIdleMs`, and
`acpWarmHandleIdleMs`. Return structured warnings from create, hire, and
update. Show warnings in Runtime and after a save.
- Keep validation for commands, credentials, filesystem, network, and
permission settings.
- Retain the legacy turn limit in the existing live conversion fixture.
Update regression tests, upgrade stories, and capability maps.

## Verification

- Red: the old route returns HTTP 422 for the saved turn limit; the old
form hides the Daytona upgrade notice.
- Green: 417 focused server and form tests pass. A further 188 tests
pass after the review fixes. Qualification coverage includes failed
probes, unsupported targets, changed settings, managed defaults, unsaved
environment variables, and forced Kubernetes targets.
- `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` pass. Token gates, map checks,
map tests, and Storybook catalog checks pass.
- Real local Claude Opus 5.5 conversion and task pass, with the
downloaded artifact checked against seeded source bytes, SHA-256, and
Git commit.
- Real browser upgrade and full Claude Opus 5.5 task on a disposable
named Daytona snapshot pass at `b81cec7d8c`. The saved agent retains its
model, high effort, credentials, timeout, and grace settings while
dropping the turn limit with a visible warning. Exactly one successful
run completed the task. The downloaded artifact matched independently
seeded source bytes, SHA-256, and Git commit; the source was unchanged,
no interactions remained pending, and the delivery link survived a
browser reload. The snapshot used current runtime assets built from
public source. The supplied Daytona account could not access the
original staging snapshot, so this verifies an equivalent local fixture
rather than that exact snapshot. Disposable test resources were cleaned
up.
- Earlier live attempts remain recorded: an image-based sandbox creation
failed, and the first named-snapshot probe returned failure with
unresolved provisional cleanup identity. Later named-snapshot probing
and the task succeeded; the initial creation failures are not attributed
to this PR or declared resolved. A separate attempt using the Oct 18
cached runtime failed the current provider-pack compatibility check;
rebuilding the runtime from matching public source removed that
mismatch. Owned resources were identified and cleaned up, with
diagnostic databases retained.
- 54 checks passed at `b81cec7d8c`, with no failed checks; Greptile and
Paperclip Review both scored 5/5, with both review threads resolved.
Master advanced during the live proof, so the branch was rebased with
both sides of additive import/test conflicts retained. On the rebased
head `2b74222b94`, 472 focused tests, UI typecheck, and UI build pass.
All required CI gates pass; Greptile and Paperclip Review both score 5/5
on this head, with no unresolved review threads. The PR is mergeable.
The serial local `pnpm test:run` was stopped after the CI test lanes
passed; that local run is not claimed as a pass.

## Risks

- An explicit upgrade can allocate a temporary probe sandbox and take
several minutes. Probe failures leave the agent on its existing runner.
- Ignored options no longer enforce a turn cap, Chrome integration, or
legacy idle-time tuning. The UI warns about each active ignored option.
- Unsafe or ambiguous execution settings still fail validation. This
change does not weaken environment qualification or runtime artifact
checks.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6, with reasoning, code execution, and browser tools.
The exact deployment model ID and context-window size are not exposed in
this session.

DottaandPaperclip 9bf7dc0c8f feat(agents): bulk edit connections and default models (#17215)
Add harness-scoped bulk connection and default-model edits to the agent roster, with compatible choices, change previews, per-agent save results, and retries.

Use an icon-based harness filter, keep agent rows readable, remove the status selector and selection hint, and redirect legacy status URLs to the full roster.

Preserve authorization, audit history, unrelated settings, and optimistic concurrency checks through the existing agent update route.

DottaandPaperclip 734c265339 Default new Pi agents to Paperclip Runner (#17142)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - Users choose a harness during agent setup.
> - Claude, Codex, and OpenCode already receive their qualified Runner
default.
> - Pi has a qualified native integration but new Pi agents still use
the direct adapter.
> - This change gives new Pi agents the native default on supported
targets.
> - Saved agents keep their runner and compatible settings. Legacy
remains available in Advanced.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #17120, #14921, #14922, #14923, #14924, and #14956. Related generic
default work: #15422. This PR is the separate Pi follow-up to the merged
OpenCode change.

**Current behavior**

Choosing Pi for a new agent saves the direct Pi adapter. The native Pi
integration remains behind the generic experimental flag.

**Proposed behavior**

Default new Pi agents to ACPX Pi on macOS ARM64/x64 and GNU/Linux x64
with supported glibc. Keep unsupported targets and explicit Legacy
selections on the direct adapter. Require an explicit provider/model
before test or hire. Permit model-free inactive setup drafts.

**Reason and benefit**

Users choose Pi once and receive its qualified runner. Saved agents
retain their identity and settings. Conversions reject unsupported
legacy thinking and launch settings instead of dropping them.

## What Changed

- Add Pi to the shared platform/default contract and server creation
selection.
- Admit native Pi without the generic experimental flag.
- Preserve provider models, credentials, workspace settings, exact
thinking, and saved native policies.
- Add Pi runner controls, branding, setup resume, onboarding, built-in
configuration, and import handling.
- Add managed Pi OpenRouter routing and matching native provider API-key
accounts. Keep subscription and custom gateway exclusions. Clear
alternate credentials and reject custom Pi provider overrides.
- Keep Pi draft models empty instead of applying Claude's default model.
- Verify setup against the pinned Pi runtime. For native Pi on the
official OpenRouter route, reverify the API key live without requiring a
global Legacy Pi CLI.
- Match Pi’s bounded controller close window to its native snapshot
cleanup and lifetime verification, preserving explicit caller deadlines
and the mandatory drain/suspension proof.
- Bind Pi sidecars to the package that owns the pinned native assets,
including source and vendored server layouts. Other providers retain
their existing package authority.
- Keep protocol-owned finish/block tools out of the ACPX forwarded
catalog. The trusted bridge installs these tools itself; the complete
Rust authorization catalog and terminal receipt ledger remain intact.
This fixes actual Pi session startup and applies to other ACPX
consumers.
- Advance Copilot’s shared-source attestation to v58 because it pins the
shared files touched by Pi. Preserve immutable v57 bytes and historical
decoding; Pi’s own release identity is unchanged.
- Add regression coverage and update the paired maps and developer
documentation.

## Verification

- Passed: full repository typecheck and full production build on final
head 656d304783, including the generated attestation repair.
- Passed: focused shared/server/UI suites covering default selection,
platform fallback, conversion preservation, inactive drafts, managed
account compatibility, credential isolation, OpenRouter routing/model
IDs, exact thinking controls, and saved-account selection. Relevant
batches include 375 server/conversion tests, 267 account/routing tests,
and 110 UI setup/account tests.
- Passed: 179 attestation, historical-profile, qualified-profile, and
native-execution contract tests after CI identified stale Copilot source
hashes. The identity generator check passes; the only delta after the
passing Pi browser run is this Copilot attestation/history repair.
- Passed: 145 managed-account tests, including actual service
preparation and API-key adoption/rejection for native Pi without the
Legacy CLI; 6 pinned-installation probe tests.
- Red then green: an actual task failed session.open because its
54-operation catalog included the bridge-owned terminal tools. The
regression with those tools failed before the filter; all 399 Rust
library tests pass after it. The full product retry exposed an
additional package-authority mismatch. Four authority tests failed
before that repair; 11 authority checks and 14 installation/asset checks
pass afterward. Direct real Pi session initialization with the corrected
package root and catalog succeeds. No model prompt was sent by that
diagnostic.
- Red then green: real Pi posted Hello from Pi but its controller closed
before native cleanup could finish. The cleanup-budget test failed with
the old default and passes with the bounded Pi window. All 46 selected
suspension, drain, and package-authority tests pass after building their
native fixture.
- Passed: token gates, paired map checks, Rust formatting, and git diff
--check.
- Passed real browser acceptance on macOS ARM64, generic native runner
flag disabled, source a433748a12 (Pi code unchanged afterward): the UI
selects Paperclip Runner by default, retains Pi and the selected
model/account, and verifies the pinned runtime plus live OpenRouter key.
A fresh UI-created task, assigned to the UI-created native Pi agent,
posted exactly `Hello from Pi` and reached Done without retry or
restart. The native run and workspace finalization succeeded; the
response and Done persisted after Reload.
- Evidence: 8 preserved browser attempts, including the final passing
18-step journey with all screenshots. Prior failures remain recorded.
The earlier failed checkpoint run recovered on server restart; that
recovery is separate from the fresh final task’s clean success.
- Preserved browser failures: missing account control/inherited Claude
draft model; incompatible managed-account/model-prefix handling; generic
npm probe for Pi; Legacy CLI hello check; duplicate terminal tools and
wrong provider-package authority at actual native session.open; a real
Hello from Pi comment followed by premature checkpoint cleanup timeout.
Each failure has retained screenshots/logs and a corresponding focused
repair. The fresh final task proves these repairs end to end.
- The exact Runner Vitest shard was also run locally after the
attestation fix: the stale-hash failure is gone; 1,833 tests passed, 10
skipped, and two Codex retained-control settlement scenarios failed with
`native_cleanup_maintenance_unproven` during terminal ACK/suspension
replay. Both scenarios passed in an isolated rerun (2/2), and the same
19-test file passed in the preceding Linux CI run. The precise
full-shard timing cause is not established. These Codex scenarios are
outside the changed Pi paths; the original local failures are retained;
no complete local Runner-shard pass is claimed. The corresponding Runner
shard now passes on the final head in hosted Linux CI. All 60 final-head
check runs are now terminal and clean (55 successful, 1 neutral, 4
skipped), and the legacy Snyk status is successful.
- Local full repository tests were attempted but not completed:
provisioning briefly confused a workspace symlink, then a later run was
stopped before browser-driven repairs. No full local-suite pass is
claimed. Final-head hosted CI is green and fresh Greptile review is 5/5
with all review threads resolved; earlier jobs canceled by runner
shutdown are not counted as a pass.

## Risks

- Pi cleanup has a finite 45-second default window, accounting for the
native 30-second snapshot cleanup and 5-second lifetime fence. Other
providers and explicit caller deadlines retain their prior behavior.
- Pi requires explicit operator setup with `paperclipai runtime setup
pi` on the execution host. This PR does not add automatic downloads.
- Linux ARM64, Windows, musl, and unqualified targets retain Legacy.
- Legacy thinking levels minimal, medium, and xhigh cannot be translated
exactly. Native max thinking, warm lifecycle, or restricted permissions
cannot be dropped during a return to Legacy.
- Copilot’s bound profile advances to v58 with exact current launch
admission; v57 remains decodable for recovery. No historical identity is
rewritten.
- Existing agents and immutable run descriptors are not migrated. Cloud
Pi availability is unchanged.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex with reasoning, code editing, command
execution, and browser use. The exact serving model ID and
context-window size are not exposed in this session.

DottaandPaperclip 0f15f82b19 feat: offer existing Claude and Codex agents a runner upgrade (#17122)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Each agent stores its harness, model, account and runtime
configuration.
> - New Claude and Codex agents now use Paperclip Runner on qualified
targets.
> - Existing agents keep their legacy runner and need a clear upgrade
action.
> - The existing configuration API already translates settings and
records revisions.
> - This pull request adds an explicit upgrade action that uses that
API.
> - Operators can retain supported settings and correct rejected
settings in place.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What existing behavior does this improve?**

Existing Claude and Codex agent configuration. Related defaults: #15683
and #15993.

**Current behavior**

Existing agents retain their legacy runner. The operator must find the
runner selector in Advanced to change it.

**Proposed behavior**

Show Upgrade runner when Paperclip Runner is the qualified default for
the saved environment. One click saves pending edits and requests the
existing server conversion. Show any rejected settings without changing
saved configuration.

**Reason and benefit**

Operators can adopt the current runner while retaining their harness,
model, account bindings, instructions and history. Unsupported settings
remain visible and editable.

**Breaking changes**

None. Visiting configuration and saving unrelated changes do not upgrade
an agent. The server API, authorization and conversion rules are
unchanged.

## What Changed

- Add an upgrade notice, pending state, saved result and retry feedback
to the production configuration form.
- Include pending profile, runtime and environment-variable edits in the
upgrade request.
- Bind asynchronous upgrade feedback and save receipts to their original
agent. Navigating away cannot show success on another agent or redirect
back.
- Keep the notice absent for native agents, other harnesses, unavailable
targets and failed discovery.
- Add configuration/API regressions and database session-reset checks
for Claude and Codex.
- Add 13 production-page Storybook states with browser checks in both
themes and on mobile.
- Update the product contract and feature/access maps.

## Verification

- Configuration form and original-agent save receipts: 135 tests passed.
Existing agent route/rename helpers also pass.
- Runner selection, configuration API and database migration
regressions: 220 tests passed.
- Storybook browser checks: 26 passed. Interactive cases wait for
Storybook's visible Pass report. Static cases check the rendered
production form. These use simulated HTTP boundaries.
- Full typecheck, build, map checks and token gates passed on the
current head. Storybook build and public preview verification passed.
- Published fixture preview:
https://storybook.paperclip.page/storybook/branches/codex~2Fagent-runner-upgrade/?path=/story/agents-runner-upgrade--legacy-codex
- All 58 current-head PR checks passed, including the full test shards,
browser suites, build and aggregate gates. The duplicate local pnpm
test:run was stopped after 34 minutes once the same-head full CI suite
passed; it had not finished its general-server phase. No local
full-suite pass is claimed.
- Real disposable local test drive: Codex used gpt-5.4 and Claude used
claude-sonnet-4-6. Both completed one task on Legacy, upgraded through
the browser button, and completed another task on Paperclip Runner with
the same model and API credentials. Independent file checks confirmed
saved instructions and environment bindings before and after conversion.
- Reopened both configurations and compared identity, model, credential
references, instruction hashes, working directories, run policies and
configuration revisions.
- A Claude Chrome setting produced a field-specific rejection. The saved
agent stayed Legacy. Clearing Chrome in the form and clicking Upgrade
runner saved the pending correction and completed conversion.

## Risks

- The existing translator rejects settings that the new runner cannot
honor. The notice shows that error and leaves the form available for
correction.
- Converted agents start fresh sessions. Prior runs remain available.
- Real task execution was checked on local macOS with API credentials.
SSH, sandbox targets and subscription credentials were not exercised in
this change.
- Storybook responses simulate persistence. The real test drive and
database tests provide separate persistence evidence.

## Model Used

- OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. The exact serving variant and
context-window size were not exposed in this session. Used reasoning,
code editing, shell tools and browser interaction. No subagents.

DottaandPaperclip 39e44a9d9b Default new OpenCode agents to Paperclip Runner (#17120)
Default new OpenCode agents to Paperclip Runner on qualified macOS and Linux x64 targets. Preserve saved runner choices, explicit Legacy selection, and unsupported-target fallback. Pi remains a separate change.

Verified the complete browser path with a real OpenRouter connection: create the new agent, assign a task, observe its response and Done status, and reload to confirm persistence. CI passes and Greptile is 5/5 with no unresolved findings.

DottaandPaperclip 45b67f1d93 feat: default new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner (#15993)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip lets users choose an agent harness and account.
> - The server resolves the runner for new agents.
> - Claude still needs the same ordinary native-default journey as
Codex.
> - Existing agents must retain their runner, model and account.
> - This PR defaults new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner
with Opus 5.5.
> - Users can connect and work without a runner override.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #15683. This PR depends on #15994 and precedes #15997. Related
scope: #15422, #13978 and #15224.

## What Changed

- Resolve new Apple Silicon Claude agents to `paperclip_runner`,
`provider: acpx`, `acpxAgent: claude`. Keep explicit Legacy, models,
provider routing and saved execution.
- Use `claude-opus-5-5` for ordinary Claude defaults and retain explicit
overrides.
- Reuse existing API-key/subscription connections, credential storage
and checks. Generalize the shared Advanced runner control with Claude
branding.
- Carry configured effort into the shared v9 contract. Preserve
compatible permissions, instructions, skills, timeouts and session
behavior. Require Legacy for unsupported settings.
- Qualify a new immutable managed Claude target at explicit Connect
through the existing permission-gated probe. Use fresh scoped discovery
for test and hire. Discard stale results and require an explicit Connect
after settings change.
- Retain merged Codex onboarding recovery, auth preparation,
import/effort corrections and Grok Bot gates.
- Check the Claude first-task wizard's saved default directly. Update
configuration/runtime documentation and exact Opus 5.5 accounting.

- Align hire fixtures with the merged host-environment restriction.
Native agent-authenticated hires cannot inject host env settings; both
creation endpoints verify that no extra agent is saved.

## Verification

- Updated onto master `9179d8dcc3e908c217fde4f63c9d08ccf8132eeb` through
#15994. Native input v9 carries effort while preserving v7 home modes
and v8 Muse. Codex defaults remain unchanged.
- Focused local verification passed 285 server tests, 323 UI tests, 124
setup/registry tests, and two v9 permission-pin transport cases. Direct
server/UI TypeScript checks passed. An initial 30-second hook timeout
was resolved by serial verification with a longer hook budget: all 122
credential/permission cases and 232 snapshot/environment cases pass.
Direct server TypeScript checking also passes.
- Ordinary web creation with the experiment disabled saved native
Claude, Opus 5.5 and High effort without runner/model overrides. The
actual product task and follow-up both succeeded on integrated source
`b2c9fe43f9cd3bc5dd9d22552da0148845ba71a4` with the cloud-built daemon
from `04e0202ca81387b17cbe7fd094a8338648356fe9`. The final master
reconciliation also changes shared runtime source. Historical proof
retains its source identity; a final-source cloud qualification is
running before refreshing the preview daemon.
- Both actual browser downloads were checked: v1 has three sections/six
checkboxes (451 bytes); v2 preserves the original body and adds two
Rollback checks (612 bytes). The original attachment stayed
byte-identical. The follow-up records session resume and the same
provider session. Total estimated API usage: $0.518432800, with no
pending/unpriced usage in the successful fixture.
- Fixed the live-discovered setup incompatibility: native API-key
validation no longer depends on the global Legacy Claude CLI. The
existing provider endpoint verifies the key without a paid prompt;
subscription/custom routing probes remain intact.
- Fixed security review's native-hire credential redirection:
agent-supplied URLs, proxy/launch settings and other host environment
controls are rejected before inheritance. Native credential references
remain supported and partial edits use the saved harness. Added
create/hire/update regression coverage.
- Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh
Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required
typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed
remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs.
- Docker and native release builds ran in cloud infrastructure. An
inadvertent local Rust prerequisite was stopped; no local Docker build
was run.

- The final master merge preserves task-loading, permission,
skill-retention and OpenRouter changes. Pi uses a fresh combined profile
27, preserving both historical profile-24 declarations; Copilot remains
profile 22. Focused protocol checks passed 155 cases (one skipped), the
updated Pi attestation check passed 18 (one skipped), and 91
evaluation/catalog checks passed.

- Latest-application manual continuation passed in 37.942 seconds on
`695e5c005a85bddc8711d3fcddcaf6b7e1fb64d0`, with High effort, native
Opus 5.5, Anthropic API attribution, the same resumed Claude session, an
independently checked 635-byte file and persisted Done status. It uses
the earlier verified Mac daemon; the preceding-source package
qualification passed at `dca62c7aeb4b45f0dd91a8e18d386a16a2658ef8`. That
package run predates the small TypeScript startup fix and is not
relabeled as qualification for it.
- Upgrade limitation: changed compiled sidecar identity rejected old
durable launch state and recovery hit session-open bounds before
eventually resuming. That attempt was operator-cancelled and retained;
the successful manual continuation does not qualify seamless upgrades.

- Local latency profile, Opus 5.5/High unchanged: three alternating
real-ACP loopback samples per variant reduce median provider-ready time
from 5.081s to 4.034s. The matched real API task startup improves from
5.533s to 4.348s, but total reply time changes from 17.933s to 20.221s
because agent work varies. This establishes a startup saving of about
one second, not a consistent total-reply speedup. A real candidate
follow-up passed in 20.146s and resumed the same saved session. The
loopback fixture makes no external model requests; failed initial probes
remain retained.
- The startup change passes 107 focused runtime/effort/lease tests, 53
profile checks (one skipped), TypeScript checking and the
TypeScript-only runtime build. Native hire fixture checks pass 70 tests;
their first local run retained a socket-hangup failure and stale
OpenCode expectation, both accounted for before the passing rerun.
Broader required checks run in cloud CI.

## Risks

- Missing packages, authentication rejection, unsupported settings and
unavailable models must fail explicitly. Existing agents retain saved
execution; explicit runner changes use existing revision/session
invalidation.
- Subscription follow-up remains unverified; remaining live acceptance
uses API keys per human steering. Historical accounting holds and the
separate $50 ceiling remain intact.
- The subscription acceptance limit remains explicit for review. No
Claude database migration is introduced.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository tools, code
execution and browser testing. The exact serving model ID and
context-window size are not exposed in this session.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip fa9f3f8a08 feat(runner): support preconfigured user homes for Codex and ACPX (#16486)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - Runner launches the selected provider and keeps durable session
state.
> - Runner currently prepares private provider homes for each session.
> - Operators can already have working login, skills, and MCP
configuration on the execution machine.
> - This PR adds an explicit mode that uses that existing setup.
> - Runner keeps its task bridge and session ownership while leaving the
user's configuration in place.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation:** Rebuilding a provider home is unnecessary
when the execution account is already configured.

**Proposed solution:** Add `homeMode: "preconfigured"` to Runner adapter
config and runnerd transport options. Keep `"isolated"` as the default.
Initially support native Codex and ACPX Claude.

**Alternatives considered:** Continue copying user configuration into a
private home, or add an approval workflow. Both add work outside this
feature's scope.

**Roadmap alignment:** This extends the existing cross-provider Runner.
It does not add another runtime.

Related work: #14056 covers managed Codex credentials. #14474 covers
command environment delivery. This mode uses user-owned credentials and
retains the existing launch boundaries.

## What Changed

- Add a closed v7 launch contract for the selected home mode. Existing
contracts retain their behavior.
- Keep homeMode under operator control. Reject task overrides and
agent-authenticated changes, including removal through replacements,
adapter changes, or rollback. Ignore stored task values and exclude it
from automatic hire inheritance.
- Skip managed AI login, assigned-skill materialization, and external
MCP setup in preconfigured mode. Preserve the Runner task/completion
bridge.
- Keep protocol state and provider lifetime fences scoped to the Runner
session. Different sessions can share a home.
- Fail preconfigured ACPX planning/read-only launches before provider
admission until a read-only user-home launch is qualified. Use isolated
mode or native Codex for planning.
- Reject ACPX approval requests. Keep native Codex on `never`. Local
permission rules and hooks remain effective. Initially require the
default Runner ACPX `approve-all` setting; other Runner policies are
unqualified in this mode and fail before launch.
- Keep the internal ACPX bridge in a stable session namespace,
preserving an existing user MCP server named `paperclip`.
- Reject preconfigured ACPX Codex before launch until a session
permission profile can enforce Runner-state denial. Remove the
unprotected full-access mode switch; use native Codex or isolated mode
for that model family.
- Bump Pi to profile 23 because its attestation covers shared Runner
source changed here. Preserve profile 22 for historical recovery, and
update Docker/package verification inputs.
- Fence recovery on mode and home bindings. Fail missing
provider-history recovery without starting a replacement session.
Exclude the external Codex home from backups and credential cleanup.
- Discover remote HOME on the execution machine. Do not project
controller HOME or XDG paths onto it.
- Separate task instructions from Codex ACP isolation and update the
generated provider digest.
- Keep remote configured-environment manifests consistent when dropping
controller paths. Preserve exact Claude model IDs through per-launch
environment settings, without editing the user home or patching the
provider.

## Verification

- Targeted local checks cover native contracts and launch allowlists,
user-config preservation, provider admission, permissions, session
recovery, remote environment projection, heartbeat preparation, and
operator-only configuration. Runner, shared, and server TypeScript
checks and the Rust binary build pass; generated ACPX profiles are
current.
- Following the latest master integration, all 757 server
configuration/executor tests and 115 Runner admission/recovery tests
passed. Additional review-fix checks passed: 103 planning contract/host
tests, 78 provider-backend tests, 95 route/preparation/inheritance
tests, 43 task-validator tests, and 43 workspace-policy tests. Counts
describe separate runs and can overlap.
- The real pinned Claude ACP/SDK regression reproduces exact-model
aliasing without the fix (`claude-sonnet-5-5` becomes `sonnet`) and
passes with the fix. All 89 adapter tests pass. User settings remain
byte-for-byte unchanged.
- Localhost-only Claude SDK probes with synthetic credentials verify the
private bridge runs, local `ask` reaches the existing reject callback,
local `deny` blocks without a callback, and a user MCP server named
`paperclip` remains available. No user model allowlist is required.
- Review regressions cover fail-closed provider admission, saved-mode
recovery before routing, controller-home path removal without
configured-environment manifest drift, pre-launch rejection of
unqualified read-only ACPX launches, and denial of task/agent changes to
the operator-owned home mode.
- Before rebase, `d4d4ee2aebe4cb88c4f4d9ef8e22fed4b36b87be` received
standard Greptile 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Prior Apex findings
are fixed and covered by regressions. No manual Greptile retrigger is
requested for this rebase, per reviewer direction.
- The prior PR head and master hit the same GitHub runner encoding crash
in workspace-b on three PR attempts, including diagnostic logging
([prior PR
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38818474563/job/116714538405),
[prior master
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38819528748/job/116712423193)).
Rebased onto `origin/master` at `c3ffa3f0dd` to pull in its bridge-test
index correction. The rebased head
`edd153db410bea063b645e0000aa68649f287b00` passes all CI checks ([CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38824676914)),
including workspace-b. Greptile's automatic standard review is 5/5 on
this exact head, with no unresolved threads; no manual review was
requested.
- Local workspace-b investigation passed 911 shared tests and 3,868
tests across the remaining 15 workspace projects. The catalog run
separately hit an existing ignored
`.agents/skills/design-guide/SKILL.md` description-budget violation in
this checkout; that file is untracked, outside the PR, and left
untouched. Repeating shared tests with CI reporting enabled also passed.
- Rebase verification: the final Git tree exactly matches the previously
reviewed branch combined with current master. All 192 Runner
admission/contract tests, 61 server preparation/provider tests, and 68
bridge tests pass, as do Runner/server TypeScript and generated-profile
checks. The real Claude adapter fixture hit an `ENOTEMPTY` cleanup race
on its initial run; all 89 adapter tests passed on retry.
- Apex on rebased head `edd153db` returned 2/5: ACPX Codex selected full
access without enforcing Runner-state denial, and agent configuration
replacement could remove the operator mode. Both are fixed in
`26e14dbbf`. Preconfigured ACPX Codex is temporarily unqualified;
re-enabling it requires session permission enforcement on thread/turn
operations and a real filesystem-denial probe. The config guard covers
effective replacements, adapter changes, and rollback while allowing
ordinary agent merges and operator removal. All 190 focused Runner
tests, 103 server tests, both typechecks, and generated-profile checks
pass. Standard review and CI passed before the next Apex request.
- CI on `26e14dbbf` passed 1,967 Runner-shard tests but hit the
previously observed `ENOTEMPTY` fixture cleanup race after successful
Claude model admission. `eb83284fb` adds bounded filesystem retries to
that fixture's teardown; all 87 adapter tests pass. Assertions and
production cleanup behavior are unchanged. Head
`eb83284fb42ee19a15d9a93b106c1bbb07e1695e` passes all 59 CI checks ([CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38829500857))
and standard Greptile at 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Apex also
completed at **5/5** on that exact head ([Apex
result](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/16486#issuecomment-6201559527)).
All review threads are resolved, the branch has no merge conflicts, and
the PR remains unmerged.
- No live paid-provider or remote-machine smoke was performed. The
lockfile remains unchanged under the repository's refresh-bot policy;
local dependency installation resolved the changed patch hash.

## Risks

This explicit opt-in grants Codex tools access to the execution home
(read-only in planning), including credentials. Native Codex separately
denies Runner-owned protocol state. ACPX Claude retains its existing
provider trust boundary, and the isolated default is unchanged.
Providers may refresh credentials and update their own metadata.

User configuration can block tools or the completion reporter. Existing
blocked results and failure diagnostics remain the recovery path. Edit
the local settings and retry; no new approval workflow is added.

External provider history remains on the execution machine and is not
backed up by Runner. Remote HOME discovery requires `getent` and fails
explicitly when unavailable. Other harnesses need separate
qualification.

The Codex ACP bundle digest changes. Existing sessions tied to the old
bundle may need a fresh session. No database migration is required.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6, with reasoning and code execution. The exact
runtime model ID was not exposed.

DottaandPaperclip adb69e8f09 feat: default new Codex agents to Paperclip Runner on Linux and macOS (#15683)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source control plane for agent companies.
> - People choose a harness when creating an agent.
> - The server should resolve that harness to a qualified runner.
> - Codex is the first harness in the staged default rollout.
> - Saved agents must retain their execution choices.
> - New Codex agents therefore use Paperclip Runner on qualified
macOS/Linux targets, with an explicit Legacy override.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #16028, #15555, #15673, #15422, #15631, #15926, #15932, #16149.

The runtime/install prerequisite and release repair are merged. This
slice owns Codex creation, setup, configuration and preservation. Other
harness defaults remain unchanged. It adds no database migration;
incoming master migrations, required maps and regression coverage are
retained.

## What Changed

- Resolve `runner: auto | paperclip | legacy` at the common creation
boundary across onboarding, API/CLI, hires, built-ins, plugins and
imports. Freeze pending hires and export resolved execution choices.
- Preserve existing runners on upgrades, unrelated edits and import
updates, including compatible accounts, workspace settings, Codex effort
and intentional clears.
- Use the underlying harness picker and branding; put the runner
override in Advanced. Use the shared dropdown and update
production-component stories and creation contracts.
- Support qualified Apple Silicon, Intel Mac, Linux x64 and Linux ARM64.
Linux requires GNU libc 2.39+. Disabled, external, unsupported and
unqualified combinations retain their applicable Legacy execution.
- Test the selected runtime/account/model/environment. Ordinary Connect
probes eligible immutable managed targets and refreshes scoped
discovery. Creation/discovery do not provision. Auth, dependency,
incompatible-setting and cleanup failures remain actionable without
changing runners.
- Keep setup probes read-only, preserve local/SSH isolation and resolve
packaged assets before staging credentials. Bound cleanup reads by the
remaining absolute deadline; physically close every owned ingress socket
before endpoint release. Unconfirmed cleanup retains recovery state.
- Preserve validated completed-onboarding callbacks through startup
recovery. First file-producing work belongs to the child task and uses
the existing dependency/block handoff and task-scoped registration.
- Reuse existing E2E fixtures, artifact checks, reporting and controls.
Keep Docker/Cargo/native compilation remote. Paperclip tarballs contain
no Codex payloads; official optional npm platform dependencies remain.

## Verification

Current tested head: `1c03a8815672d82c264a9b08d4ea1984e8fae107`.
**Merge-ready: required CI, fresh review, package qualification, Mac
core acceptance and Test task/follow-up acceptance pass.** The existing
attachment and native-continuity oracles independently verify both Test
downloads, run attribution and unchanged native/provider/workspace
identities. The maintainer authorized a code-owner-review exception for
this PR only. The first Test setup failure and normal Board
completion-review friction are retained below. Actual post-merge
packages and private Cloud distribution remain separate qualification
gates.

- [Current
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38564241625):
all 48 ordinary jobs and required verify/E2E pass. Attempt 1 retained
six simultaneous host-shutdown cancellations. One failed-only retry
passes those six lanes and two aggregates, preserving 40 successes.
Actual integration checkout `53104c1` combines this head with master
`c80`; it is not relabeled as the branch tree. Fresh exact-head Greptile
5/5, 30 resolved threads, no actionable findings.
- [Exact-source package
qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38565287239):
nine applicable jobs pass, nine conditional jobs skip. Four remote
native producers; Linux x64 clean install; Intel Mac, Apple Silicon and
Linux ARM64 native startup/physical cleanup controls. All 18
tarballs/four daemon source/hash/manifest bindings and 343 migrations
through 0344 verify. No Codex payload is packed. These hosted tarballs
are not a published npm canary.
- Normal Apple Silicon installation and credential-free native
startup/cleanup pass using the packaged daemon, with no source build or
provider turn. Fresh installed DB initialization passes. Upgrade
651a→1c03 preserves all three complete execution configs, accounts, ten
recorded run profiles, paused budgets, active incidents, cost summaries
and two historical unpriced events. Historical recovery state is
retained.
- Cleanup regressions: four delayed-read baseline failures become 15
passing deadline/authority controls. No-acknowledgement and prior-error
socket ownership regressions become 12 passing controls. Direct
runtime/server types, maps: 35 areas / 176 IDs, diff checks and
independent reviews pass. Permission/auth/reconnect policy and the
10-second setup budget remain intact.
- Existing source coverage includes creation/selection/imports, pending
approvals, recovery, account/lifecycle handling, mounted forms,
dropdowns and E2E support. Full typechecks/tests/build/token and
applicable Storybook checks pass in the recorded current CI; no
duplicate suite or weakened grader.
- Literal 9546 live Mac proof: ordinary Auto Codex onboarding, useful
document, real completed-child callback/reply, seven successful native
runs, manual follow-up and independently downloaded1,101-byte child
file. Existing Legacy title edit/reload preserves execution; two real
Legacy runs produce independently checked15/34-byte files. These remain
historical source records.
- Current literal 1c03 Mac core acceptance passes independent checks:
ordinary Auto native Codex onboarding without runner override; only
timeout 180 seconds/concurrency 1 saved; six successful native runs and
six serialized turns (maximum overlap 1); both same-task continuity
checks and five mechanical callback checks; actual rendered parent reply
and exact child downloads. The useful handoff advances from revision 1
to 2. Both files are 48 bytes, SHA-256
`8b742bd4e8123a7c078f0a8d9f3449fbfa8a320d7d90be641a2818db3c53d92c` and
`f42db9774fa06e804ab7d596fc8b922a2b638921c418b87d0111151d290a6afe`;
exactly one byte changes and old history remains. The agent is paused
with zero active runs/errors. Both artifact work products have
`isPrimary=false`, and descriptive titles fail a stricter title-helper
assumption; these retained results are scoped editorial follow-up, not
new merge gates. Six source-bound screenshots are uploaded and verified
in the private primary QA report.
- [Literal 9546 managed
proof](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-38485488621-1/index.html):
original 19 assertions and completed judge pass, four native turns,
child-bound240-byte file and session/workspace continuity. Checkout
reports a verified generated target-lock mutation; full final porcelain
was not retained. Signed execution-image identity remains separate from
Core source.
- Actual 651a Test deployment succeeds on one owned/pinned target. One
ordinary Auto API-key Connect then fails native cleanup before hire.
Controller turn/drain/suspend completion and service-recorded
environment cleanup are observed; they do not certify physical deletion
or native authority retirement. Failure/recovery/unknown holds are
retained. No Legacy switch or unchanged paid retry. The two source
repairs above require actual treatment.
- [Current immutable Core
preview](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38570365725)
and matching DB/shared artifacts pass. One owned, pinned Test target
serves exact `1c03`; identical migration history correctly skips the
migrator. Ordinary Auto Codex Connect succeeds and hires native; saved
native selection and QA bounds survive reload. The initial child
preparation attempt fails before provider work, with actual stdout
identifying `renewal_deadline`; its trigger remains unknown and the
failure is retained. Normal Board **Try again** and **Resume** recover
the child to Done, producing a browser-verified 44-byte file, SHA-256
`0a8458b1efcc2d7a0d815689458c4caab039a46c7c7a3e5805de6bc8b1a96ecc`. The
actual parent callback reports the completed child document/file. The
existing validator requires a parent-owned attachment, so recovery
enters normal Review; after byte checking, normal **Approve completion**
reaches parent Done. No forced status or duplicate parent file is used.
The validator is unchanged from integrated and current master.
Autonomous initial callback-to-Done is not proven. The same-child
follow-up completes document revision 2 and publishes a second
independently downloaded 44-byte file, SHA-256
`22022257300fae762784632d08d3bbe0bab61e2ce81f91864a14dcd7aa464591`; only
the revision digit changes. The unchanged existing native-continuity and
attachment oracles pass. All ten recorded runs are terminal: nine native
successes and the retained pre-provider setup failure. The QA agent is
paused with zero active runs. The pre-existing parent evidence scope
mismatch is a separate follow-up, with ordinary completion review
exercised rather than a forced status or relaxed validation. This
unsigned Core preview remains distinct from post-merge private Cloud
composition.

## Risks

- Saved agents are not migrated. Explicit runner changes use normal
configuration/session rules; historical runs retain their recorded
execution.
- Native readiness depends on verified assets and server-owned target
qualification. A Legacy probe, HTTP200 or successful account save cannot
prove native readiness.
- Recovery exceptions remain restricted to validated
completed-onboarding reports; process-loss, ownership and terminal-state
safeguards remain active. Unexecuted live journeys stay open.
- Linux ARM paid tasks, Windows, Alpine and 32-bit ARM remain deferred.
Cold Cargo cache misses are recorded; no warm-cache speedup is claimed.
- Historical invoices/physical cleanup remain unconfirmed and held.
After merge, exact published npm canary, signed standard image/migrator,
private composition and serving/live acceptance still require
qualification. Production deployment/default promotion is not
authorized.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 2dd9811e8b Own agent hiring and termination in a lifecycle module (#15631)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - Agent creation, approval, pause, and termination change whether an
agent can work.
> - These changes currently use separate service and database paths.
> - Some agents need setup after their record exists and before their
harness can run.
> - This PR adds one module that owns those state changes and their
transactions.
> - The module records progress and retries incomplete work after a
server restart.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation**

A hire can become active before its execution environment is ready.
Direct agent state writes also bypass one common lifecycle boundary.
Termination does not have a durable step for resource cleanup.

**Proposed solution**

Use agent lifecycle commands for hiring, approval, pause, resume, and
termination. Keep proposed hires pending until approval. Prepare each
approved hire, test its saved harness configuration, and then permit
work. Wait for required plugin work before completing a step.

**Alternatives considered**

A general database commit hook would expose transaction details to
callers. A timer alone would delay each new hire. This module owns each
command transaction and starts its worker after commit. A periodic scan
recovers work after a process stops.

**Roadmap alignment**

This change adds the lifecycle boundary for the existing agent and
plugin systems. It does not add a user interface or a provider
implementation. It replaces the lifecycle delivery approach in #15391.
Related proposals include #11475 and #13099; this change does not add
their external executor protocols.

## What Changed

- Add durable approval, preparation, verification, pause, resume, stop,
and cleanup states.
- Keep agent creation, lifecycle state, configuration writes, and agent
record deletion behind `modules/agent-lifecycle`. Keep validation,
credential rules, reads, onboarding, invitations, general approvals, and
company data deletion in their services.
- Commit a hire before the remaining onboarding or invitation work.
Serialize requests with the existing dedicated database connection
helper. Reuse the hire after a failed attempt.
- Keep accepted work in the run queue during setup. Require execution
and cleanup evidence before completing pause or termination.
- Retain the original credential owner when approving migrated hires.
- Start lifecycle work after each command commits. Use database leases
and revision checks for retries and late results.
- Add a generic required plugin method and capability. Store the
required plugin IDs for each agent. Track host and plugin completion
separately.
- Keep harness verification and credential rules in services. Supply
their results to lifecycle through explicit ports. Reject failed logins
and incomplete probes.
- Remove reverse imports from lifecycle adapters into services. Share
record queries and validation below both layers.
- Use one hire decision path for agent IDs and approval IDs. Resolve the
approval and agent change in one transaction. Expose policy
reconciliation on the command object.
- Save configuration and verification invalidation through one module
operation. Ordinary commands own their transaction. Restrict the shared
transaction integration to its listed callers. Reject identity, company,
accounting, timestamp, and unknown fields.
- Require completed termination before deleting agent records. The
company deletion service calls the module through a separate deletion
interface.
- Save an approved secret before applying its agent binding. A failed
binding leaves the secret approved. A retry reuses it.
- Remove old permission and metadata export files. Move hire
configuration rules out of lifecycle persistence.
- Report failed worker steps and scans with operation context and known
error codes. Omit provider messages, stacks, and configuration values.
Document ordinary application use and extension rules.
- Recover expired native owners only after execution stops. Retry
cleanup of failed retained leases. Wait for setup in the live smoke
script.
- Keep manual, budget, and company pause reasons separate. Guard
execution status writes with the ready state.
- Add a migration, boundary checks, regression tests, and a lifecycle
guide. Keep the current UI.
- Limit periodic policy checks to 100 eligible agents per minute.
Continue from the last agent ID. Exclude pending hires and agents in
termination or a final state. Keep explicit company and budget updates
immediate.

## Verification

- Latest head `ccc3c86b0` aligns the shared status update schema with
the PATCH route. All 15 shared tests, 104 server route/OpenAPI tests, 2
CLI tests, and shared/server/CLI TypeScript checks pass. The Greptile
comment is fixed. CI is running; no new Apex review was requested for
this small fix.

- Rebase `75708ac94` rebases onto master at `2eb5187e4`. The backup test
uses the shared 90-second timeout from master; the older timeout commit
was removed. The affected backup test passes.
- Agent budget edits now pass the target agent ID through enforcement.
All 50 affected tests, server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass.
Both configuration update paths have regression coverage. CI is running
on the latest head. No new Apex review was requested for these small
fixes.

- Rebase `9b568666a` preserves the run-control extraction and
delivery-work startup changes from master. All 559 affected tests,
server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass. CI and Apex review are
running on the final head.
- The policy scan fix passes 56 lifecycle and diagnostic tests, 24
policy and caller tests, and 11 boundary tests. A regression test checks
the page limit, interval, excluded states, and cursor wraparound.

- Rebase `fd4698750` passes all 611 tests in eight affected lifecycle,
route, and heartbeat suites. Server TypeScript and all 11 module
boundary tests pass. The company deletion rollback and concurrent hire
tests are included.

- Follow-up `00aac7646` fixes the failed decision deletion test and the
public update schema. All 126 affected server tests, 8 shared tests, 2
CLI tests, and 11 boundary tests pass. Shared, server, CLI, and UI
TypeScript checks pass.

- Server TypeScript passes: `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc
--noEmit`.
- All 11 boundary tests pass: `node --test
scripts/check-module-boundaries.test.mjs`. The repository boundary scan
also passes.
- All 68 lifecycle, failure diagnostic, and harness verification tests
pass. Tests reject forbidden fields through the root command, combined
transition command, and restricted transaction integration. They also
check invalid fields returned by configuration preparation.
- Failure tests cover host work, plugin work, claims, renewals,
deferrals, and scans. Log tests check known error codes and exclusion of
private error contents.
- All 355 tests in 10 existing caller suites pass. These tests cover
secret approval, pairing, pending hires, credentials, company import,
built-in agents, managed agents, instructions, and skills.
- The branch is rebased onto `origin/master` at `2eb5187e4`. The queue
guards and cancellation lock fix use the extracted heartbeat queue.
Agent cancellation uses the extracted run-control file. The source diff
scan found no secrets or private URLs.
- Earlier checks cover approval retries, rollback, late verification
results, policy holds, deletion rollback, concurrent company deletion,
and queue admission during setup.
- Before the rebase, CI passed on `00aac7646` and Greptile Apex rated it
5/5 with no open comments. CI and a new Apex review are pending for the
rebased commit. The branch has no merge conflicts.
- The full local build and native Dot suite were not run. The host has
no Cargo. No live provider test was run.

## Risks

- Background policy recovery takes more than one minute when more than
100 agents are eligible. Explicit company and budget updates still
reconcile immediately.

- The restricted configuration integration keeps an agent reference and
its dependent records in one transaction. It cannot change a budget or
invoke a lifecycle transition. A periodic scan starts pending setup
after that transaction commits.
- Secret approval and binding use separate transactions. A failed
binding can leave an approved secret with no agent binding.
- New approved hires remain unavailable until setup and verification
complete. Existing clients see `paused` during these steps. This PR does
not change the UI.
- Migration `0320_daily_onslaught.sql` maps existing statuses and pause
reasons. It does not create external resources or claim that an existing
harness passed verification.
- Use a coordinated server update for this migration. Older server
versions can write legacy status without the new lifecycle checks.
- A failed onboarding or invitation request can leave a committed hire.
A retry reuses that hire and completes the remaining records.
- Deletion requires completed termination. Company deletion can require
another request while cleanup is pending.
- Required plugins must make repeated calls safe and reject older
revisions. A disabled or removed required plugin blocks completion until
it is restored.
- A new hire can run a second harness test after the existing UI test.
Some adapters can charge for this test.
- No live provider test was run. Provider implementation and resource
backfill remain separate work.

DottaandPaperclip dd777f4b73 feat(dot): complete onboarding and expand governed Runner capabilities (#15414)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents, their work, and their permissions.
> - Paperclip Runner supplies the same admitted tool authority to each
provider.
> - The Dot provider in #15402 needs reliable onboarding and useful
agent capabilities.
> - An idle Dot could not start work, assign a human, read skills, or
produce a workspace artifact.
> - Pairing also relied on a second configuration save before ordinary
admission could work.
> - This pull request adds governed idle admission and shared Runner
tools, and completes pairing atomically.
> - Operators can test Dot with fresh data while keeping normal company,
approval, budget, and run ownership checks.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Paperclip Runner, dedicated Dot MCP access, OAuth onboarding,
experimental settings, and empty worktree startup. This PR builds on
merged provider PR #15402. It reuses the merged MCP gateway from #14846
and assistant connection work from #14933 and #15380.

**Problem or motivation**

An idle Dot could see assignments but could not act on a conversation
request until someone created a task first. Its Runner catalog could not
assign tasks to humans or read pinned skills and workspace files.
First-time OAuth discovery and pairing also needed browser fixes, and a
completed pairing did not persist its binding reference on the agent.

**Proposed solution**

Keep Dot within the existing Runner. Admit a visible agent-authored
intake task for idle requests. Add people, human assignment, cross-task,
skill, and optional sandbox workspace tools through shared authority.
Relay assigned app calls through the configured MCP gateway. Add lease
renewal and follow-up references. Save pairing and its configuration
revision atomically. Show prerequisites and provide a complete copy
prompt.

**Roadmap alignment**

This extends the experimental provider in #15402. It uses the existing
governed gateway, task model, skills, artifact path, and native Runner.
It adds no separate execution subsystem.

## What Changed

- Add a standalone OpenAI Dot agent choice with an independent
experimental opt-in. It works with the general Runner option off.
Require Assistant connections (MCP), authenticated sign-in, and public
HTTPS for pairing.
- Use Dot’s own option for company package import. Allow an unpaired Dot
configuration to save after external billing acknowledgement; task
admission still requires pairing. Prepare the shared dev binary for
Dot-only opt-in.
- Label saved Dot agents as OpenAI Dot. Use prerequisite-check copy in
setup and runtime configuration.
- Route Dot creation directly to pairing after explicit external billing
acknowledgement. Hide local CLI, model, and harness setup for Dot.
Preserve the shared Runner implementation and canonical API type. Other
Runner providers still require their general opt-in.
- Add an empty worktree option with fresh signing keys and no production
data copy.
- Fix public-client OAuth negotiation, discovery compatibility, and
optional separate browser authorization origin.
- Add one-use pairing consent preview, clear copied setup instructions,
and atomic binding persistence and cleanup.
- Add idle request admission with stable request IDs and normal
scheduling, permissions, budgets, and task ownership.
- Add identity and people discovery, human task assignment and
reassignment, and authorized cross-task comments and documents.
- Read assigned skill files from pinned manifests. Relay assigned app
calls through the merged gateway without exposing credentials.
- Add an off-by-default workspace bridge. Constrain paths and writes.
Run commands in a deny-by-default OS sandbox with no network or injected
credentials. Reserve mutations before effects and never blindly repeat
uncertain work.
- Add rolling lease renewal, task pagination, bounded operation limits,
and deduplicated follow-up references without comment bodies in
webhooks.
- Add an off-by-default attachment reading setting. Restrict reads to
files on the current assigned task. Verify size and hash, cache bounded
verified copies per run, paginate text or binary bytes, and recheck live
authority before returning.
- Keep file grants operator-owned. Reject agent self-grants across
configuration routes. Preserve attachment consent in create/import
forms. Close generic API file bypasses while retaining current-run
response snapshots and permitted uploads.
- Keep provider limits explicit. Do not inherit a Dot binding,
attachment permission, or workspace permission when hiring another
agent.
- Include the required Markdown format in cross-task document writes and
validate the API title limit. Verify real creation and revision
persistence.
- Restrict command execution to Linux bubblewrap with descendant
containment. macOS retains workspace file tools and artifact publishing,
while refusing command calls. Explain the platform limit in setup.
- Exclude Paperclip instance state from workspace files, uploads,
artifact publication, and sandbox commands. Protect nested directories
and case variants. Fail closed when the directory protection scan
exceeds 4,096 directories.
- Add static UI compression for slow public tunnels. Document setup, the
complete tool inventory, and qualification limits.

## Verification

- Merge preparation on `00ca2c75b` integrates merged base #15402 and
master `fc6304dfe`. The ancestry commit preserves the reviewed follow-up
source tree. The subsequent security fix excludes instance state from
file tools, uploads, artifact publication, and sandbox commands. It
preserves private task authorization and task monitors. It regenerates
the combined tool catalog, seeded catalog digest, and protocol manifest.
Workspace typecheck, full build, and UI token gates pass. All sixteen
real Dot broker cases and 93 company import cases pass after the review
fixes and creator-attribution test correction. The exported
human-assignment catalog and Unicode page boundaries are also fixed. All
ten catalog tests and nine workspace/skill bridge tests pass. All 35
workspace bridge and authority tests passed after the instance-state
fix, including real macOS commands in that intermediate version. The
subsequent document and descendant-containment fixes pass 44 focused
tests across bridge, authority, and setup UI, with six Linux command
cases skipped on macOS. Real cross-task documents pass the route
validator and persist two revisions. macOS refuses command execution and
does not advertise the tool. Full workspace typecheck and build, changed
server/UI typechecks, and token gates pass again on the final commit.
Greptile rates final head 00ca2c75b 5/5 and its completed check
concludes success; all review threads are resolved. All 58 current-head
checks are complete: 54 passed and 4 intentionally skipped. This
includes full tests, typecheck, build, Runner, browser E2E, release
verification, and Canary Dry Run. The older full local root attempt
finished with 16,602 passes, 93 skips, and ten failures across two
suites: it began before source edits and retained earlier imported
implementations while loading later tests. Both suites pass a clean
final-head rerun (25 passed, six Linux-only command cases skipped on
macOS). This mixed-source full attempt is not a final-head full-suite
pass; use the fresh CI evidence below.
- Full workspace typecheck and build pass for the standalone Dot change
on head `392d54f80`. UI token gates are clean. The full workspace
typecheck passed before the final importer UI edit; the changed UI
typecheck, build, and token gates pass again on the final commit. The
server build passes for its unchanged final source.
- Standalone selection, creation, settings, harness visibility,
inventory, and runtime admission checks pass. OAuth onboarding and the
real Rust/PostgreSQL broker suite pass 27 cases with the general Runner
option disabled. Dot and MCP revocation still block pairing; other
Runner providers remain disabled. Create, hire, conversion, and
inherited-hire route regressions pass 68 cases. The runtime selection
suite passes 20 cases. The setup UI suite passes 50 cases. Company
import and dev binary checks pass 97 cases. Import UI checks pass 29
cases, including Dot-only selection, preservation of imported Dot
agents, generic Runner fallback, canonical configuration serialization,
and required billing acknowledgement. A read of the synthetic instance
reports the native binary required with Dot enabled, the general rollout
disabled, and no persisted native work.
- The latest attachment, operator-consent, generic API file-guard, and
bridge checks pass 80 tests. Cache and native lifecycle checks pass 550
tests; create/import builders pass 45 tests; attachment setup UI checks
pass 16 tests. The real Rust/PostgreSQL Dot broker suite passes 15
cases.
- Earlier authority, human assignment, pinned skill, confinement,
cancellation, inheritance, onboarding, replay, OpenAPI, and gateway
regressions pass their focused rechecks. Workspace writes reject
concurrent stale hashes.
- In the live empty test-drive, turn the general Runner option off and
leave Dot and MCP on. Add agent shows a separate OpenAI Dot choice.
Create rejects missing billing acknowledgement, saves the canonical Dot
configuration, and opens pairing. The existing paired Dot remains ready
and passes its prerequisite checks. No new plugin pairing was needed for
this UI change. The final browser import preview keeps a Dot source
agent as OpenAI Dot, falls back a generic Runner agent while its switch
is off, and offers Dot independently.
- Real Dot completed OAuth, signed MCP Events readiness, and an
event-only assigned document task in an empty synthetic instance.
Pairing saved its binding without a second configuration save.
- Real Dot verified human assignment, cross-task comments and documents,
pinned skill reading, sandbox commands, lease renewal, follow-up input,
and a downloaded artifact whose bytes and hash matched its receipt. An
idle conversation request created an intake, created a task for its
human owner, continued after a definite missing-file read error, and
finalized Done with exit code 0.
- After operator approval, real Dot read a synthetic assigned-task
attachment and wrote its file-only random proof into an agent-authored
document. Its first test required accepting review because the existing
document tool removed the final newline.
- On head `2626c8f9b`, real Dot read a 13,849-byte synthetic attachment
in two pages, used `expectedSha256` on page two, saved exactly its final
random marker, verified readback, and finalized Done with exit code 0. A
direct inbox check was required for this attachment qualification; it
does not claim event-only delivery.
- Previous head `392d54f80` passes all 55 checks (53 passed, two
intentionally skipped), including the full test, typecheck, build,
native Runner, browser, and release verification gates. Greptile rates
this head 5/5; all review threads are resolved.
- Head `2626c8f9b` passed all 56 checks: 54 passed and two intentionally
skipped. This includes full typecheck, build, native Runner, server
tests, serialized suites, browser E2E, and Canary Dry Run. The unchanged
Cursor managed-runtime test exceeded its five-second deadline on the
first attempt; its focused local suite passed all eight cases, and the
single CI rerun plus dependent verify gate passed.
- A prior full local serial test attempt reported 19 failures (16,141
passed, 88 skipped) and stopped before later wrapper groups. It began
before the final source edits. Every failed suite has a passing fresh
recheck; the macOS snapshot stress case passes alone in 227 seconds. The
previous head `000fb9261` passed all 56 CI checks. PRs leave
`pnpm-lock.yaml` unchanged; CI and the refresh bot own dependency
resolution.

## Risks

- Dot remains off by default. Its own opt-in does not enable other
Runner providers. It still requires the MCP option; disabling Dot blocks
new work while keeping existing recovery and saved bindings.
- Dot requires a stable public HTTPS origin. Its base provider in #15402
is merged. Temporary tunnels are useful for testing but are not
permanent deployments.
- Idle intake creates a visible agent-authored task. It does not
fabricate a human message or bypass ordinary admission.
- Workspace commands require Linux bubblewrap with a private PID
namespace; deployment qualification is still needed. macOS file tools
and artifact publishing remain available, but commands are disabled
because sandbox-exec does not contain detached descendants. There is no
unrestricted fallback. Command protection fails closed above 4,096
workspace directories. The historical macOS command walkthrough does not
qualify the current Linux implementation.
- Provider model choice, token usage, cost, native thread control, and
global external stopping remain unavailable. Known Paperclip budget
gates still apply.
- The workspace bridge and attachment reader are separate opt-in
settings. Reading assigned task files sends their contents to OpenAI.
Revocation prevents future reads but cannot withdraw bytes already sent.
Files are read on request; automatic inbound attachment staging remains
disabled.
- An existing event registration can retain earlier instructions that
prohibit extra tasks. Dot asked for permission before a second intake
after the final event-only bootstrap; that extra no-nudge continuation
is not live-qualified under that earlier registration. The later
attachment qualification submitted normally through the composer. The
revised onboarding prompt describes the new idle entry point, and its
protocol polling path is tested.
- OpenAI event delivery can be delayed; a webhook acknowledgement is not
proof that Dot has begun work.
- A running Dot can retain an old plugin catalog after tool refresh.
Refresh and actual tool exposure must be checked before using new
top-level actions.
- Hosted and remote controller modes are not qualified.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact deployment ID and context window
size are not exposed in this session. Capabilities used: reasoning,
repository editing, code execution, test inspection, and browser
control.

DottaandPaperclip fc6304dfe5 feat(runner): add experimental OpenAI Dot provider over MCP Events (#15402)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents, tasks, permissions, and execution
budgets.
> - Paperclip Runner gives each provider the same admitted task and tool
authority.
> - OpenAI Dot runs outside the local process tree and needs
asynchronous work delivery.
> - The merged MCP gateway supplies OAuth consent and signed event
delivery.
> - A personal assistant grant cannot safely stand in for an assigned
agent.
> - This pull request adds a separate Dot agent connection and a durable
Rust Runner bridge.
> - The operator can assign work to Dot and inspect its accepted work,
tool receipts, and result.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Agent or provider**

OpenAI Dot, as an experimental provider of the existing Paperclip Runner
adapter.

**Why this adapter is useful**

An operator can assign normal Paperclip tasks to an existing Dot. Dot
can read its mailbox, request work on an assigned task, use admitted
task tools, and submit a result. Paperclip keeps company scope,
checkout, approvals, known budget limits, and activity attribution.

**How the agent is invoked**

A dedicated `/mcp/runner` OAuth resource pairs one Dot grant with one
agent. A signed MCP mailbox event wakes Dot. Dot explicitly accepts the
assignment. The Rust Runner owns the durable turn and operation
receipts. The first release supports self-hosted instances with a local
Runner controller.

**Additional context**

This extends the merged public MCP gateway from #14846 and the assistant
invitation and device-consent work from #14933. This also integrates the
merged assistant tool and configuration expansion in #15380. Dot retains
its dedicated agent resource and cannot receive personal configuration
permission. The public assistant connection remains a personal
connection.

## What Changed

- Add a durable Rust Dot provider and its TypeScript Runner driver.
- Add closed PRP v3 external-provider operations and native execution
input v6.
- Add company-scoped pairing, mailbox, assignment, and operation
records.
- Reuse merged browser/device consent, client metadata verification,
webhook admissions, refresh, secret rotation, and warm-standby gates.
- Keep Dot scopes, issuer, grants, event workers, and tool access
separate from personal assistant access.
- Add Dot configuration, pairing, readiness, and consent UI. Keep agent
grants out of the personal Connections entry.
- Regenerate the Dot-only migration after master. Preserve published
gateway migrations. Make the new migration safe to reapply.
- Document setup, recovery, accounting limits, evidence, and remaining
account qualification.
- Reverify reconnect callbacks and wake outstanding work with a fresh
mailbox reference; preserve the existing assignment and operation
receipts.
- Clean up Dot bindings and waiting runs on OAuth revoke and
refresh-token replay. Old grants cannot revoke replacement bindings.
- Restore the pairing reference when an unsaved agent form is reopened;
document board-only pairing routes in OpenAPI.
- Accept a clean Rust exit after the acknowledged shutdown receipt.
Unexpected exits still require recovery.
- Clear the cached binding after a successful revoke so a failed
connection refresh cannot restore it.
- Add production-component Storybook states and screenshots for pairing
and connection review. All preview account data is synthetic.
- Persist normalized completion, serialize Dot turns and durable work
admission, and poll subscription readiness.
- Serialize mailbox writes and cursor reads; retain paused fence
acknowledgement without task authority.
- Authorize admitted review runs without changing the worker assignee.
Include the fenced assignment ID in production stop notices.

## Verification

- This PR integrates master `4a8178e9c`. Dot migration
`0317_messy_famine.sql` follows the published history and is safe to
reapply. The merge preserves the reserved migration connection,
batch-commit handling, private task checks, task monitors, and native
accounting.
- Local workspace typecheck, full build, and UI token gates pass. The
server typecheck passes after the review fixes. Database and native
executor regressions pass.
- All twelve real Rust/PostgreSQL Dot integration tests and twelve Dot
driver tests pass. The tests cover native document writing and
finalization, durable replay, queue admission, mailbox ordering,
admitted reviews, stale authority, production stop references, and
paused acknowledgements.
- Current head `d0e7e0626` passes all 57 checks: 53 pass and four are
intentionally skipped. This includes full typecheck, build, tests, Rust
Runner verification, browser E2E, release verification, and Canary Dry
Run. Greptile rates this exact head 5/5. All review threads are
resolved.
- The full local root test run is slower than the sharded CI run and has
not completed. The full CI test gates pass on the current commit.
Focused local regressions pass.
- Real-account pairing and event delivery on this base commit remain
unqualified. Live account and setup proof are recorded in the follow-up
#15414.

The following screenshots use synthetic preview data. They show the
production pairing component and do not qualify a real account or the
full agent setup journey.

![Synthetic connected
preview](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/codex/dot-events-prototype/doc/screenshots/openai-dot-runner/connected.jpg?raw=true)

## Risks

- This base adapter uses `PAPERCLIP_ENABLE_OPENAI_DOT=1` plus Public MCP
and Paperclip Runner. The separate experimental-settings follow-up in
#15414 replaces this environment flag with saved operator settings.
- Dot does not expose provider token usage or cost. The operator must
acknowledge external billing. Known Paperclip budget gates still apply.
- Cancellation fences Paperclip authority. It does not confirm that Dot
stopped all external activity.
- Assigned skill files and third-party MCP bindings are unsupported and
reject admission. There is no mounted workspace, model selector, or
provider thread identifier.
- Hosted agent-broker and remote controller deployments are not
qualified.
- The new migration follows the merged master history. Existing
prototype databases still need the normal master migration history
before this Dot-only migration.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact deployment ID and context window
size are not exposed in this session. Capabilities used: reasoning,
repository editing, code execution, and test inspection.

DottaandPaperclip 9335b7db10 fix(runner): validate inherited environments and replace stale sandbox binaries (#13677)
Resolve the effective environment for account adoption and adapter tests. Preserve saved-agent overrides when the request omits environmentId, and treat explicit null as inheritance from the instance.

Reject sandbox runners that lack unlimited-runtime and connection-lease-renewal capabilities. Stage the bundled runner before launch when the image binary is stale.

Add regression coverage for environment precedence, fail-closed validation, adapter switches, API-key reverification, and runner artifact fallback. Document the operational workaround for older controllers.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip ad4f0b5867 Fix Codex API key authentication in tests and runs (#13260)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Agent runtime settings can bind organization secrets to an adapter
environment
> - Paperclip redacts plain environment values when it returns a saved
agent to the UI
> - A saved-agent test sent the redacted `CODEX_HOME` value back to the
server
> - Codex ACP also received the API key without an ACP API-key
authentication request
> - This pull request restores saved environment values for tests and
selects API-key authentication for Codex ACP runs
> - The benefit is that Codex agents can test and run with an
organization-scoped OpenAI API key

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Testing a saved Codex agent sent `***REDACTED***` as `CODEX_HOME`.
Secret normalization rejected that placeholder. Remote Codex ACP runs
received `OPENAI_API_KEY`, but session creation stopped with
`Authentication required`.

**Expected behavior**

Paperclip must use the saved `CODEX_HOME` value when it tests an
existing agent. Codex ACP must select API-key authentication when
`OPENAI_API_KEY` is available.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Create an organization-scoped secret named `OPENAI_API_KEY`.
2. Give a Codex agent access to the secret.
3. Save the agent runtime settings.
4. Test the saved agent again.
5. Run the agent in a remote sandbox through ACP.

**Paperclip version or commit**

Reproduced on master before commit
`68c17709d7c051a804a416263e2e08920f1dfcb1`.

**Deployment mode**

Self-hosted server with a remote sandbox environment.

**Installation method**

Built from source.

**Agent adapter(s) involved**

Codex.

## What Changed

- Send the saved agent ID with adapter environment tests.
- Restore redacted plain environment values from the saved agent before
test-time secret resolution.
- Select the Codex ACP `api-key` authentication method when
`OPENAI_API_KEY` is present.
- Add focused regression coverage for saved-agent tests and remote ACP
launch configuration.

## Verification

- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils exec vitest run
src/acpx-engine/execute.test.ts`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run
src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui exec vitest run
src/lib/test-agent-setup.test.ts`
- `pnpm -r typecheck`
- `pnpm test:run`
- `pnpm build`
- `git diff --check`

## Risks

- Low risk. The test route reads saved configuration only when the
request supplies a compatible agent ID and the caller can update that
agent.
- The Codex ACP change applies only when `OPENAI_API_KEY` exists and no
explicit `DEFAULT_AUTH_REQUEST` exists.
- There are no schema migrations or telemetry changes.

## Model Used

- OpenAI Codex with `gpt-5`. The context-window size is not exposed in
this runtime. The model used reasoning, repository search, file editing,
command execution, and test execution.

DottaandPaperclip 2043e0c735 fix: repair runner configuration, macOS execution, and artifact galleries (#13062)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Agent adapters select a provider, a model, and a runtime.
> - Runner conversion rejected existing Claude agents. The model list
mixed providers.
> - The native Claude runner rejected custom models and could not launch
on macOS.
> - This pull request fixes conversion, model selection, and verified
macOS execution.
> - It also groups configuration fields consistently across adapters and
opens artifact images in the task gallery.
> - Operators can change an agent configuration and run the selected
model on their Mac.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Converting an existing Claude agent to Paperclip Runner failed with a
Codex-only restriction. ACPX Claude showed unrelated models and required
`claude-sonnet-5`. Its native runtime rejected macOS. Configuration
mixed common model settings with process controls. Artifact cards
labeled “Open gallery” navigated to attachment URLs instead of opening
the task gallery.

**Expected behavior**

Conversion keeps agent identity and compatible settings. ACPX Claude
uses the normal Claude catalog and accepts typed model IDs. Codex uses
the native runner. The verified Claude runtime can launch on macOS ARM64
and x64. Common configuration sections place the same fields together
across adapters. Artifact images open in the shared task gallery with
navigation and downloads.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Open the configuration of an existing Claude agent.
2. Convert it to Paperclip Runner.
3. Select ACPX Claude and a different catalog model or a typed model ID.
4. Save the agent and run a disposable task on macOS.
5. Inspect configuration and advanced run-policy controls across
adapters.

**Paperclip version or commit**

The bugs were reproduced on `165ca56a22adb60e5fda56045442d9c8498116a8`.
This branch was rebased onto `7ed122911`.

**Deployment mode**

Built from source. Local test-drive instance on macOS ARM64 with an
isolated database.

Related work: #11798 addresses unsupported ACP session options in the
existing adapter path. #13048 addresses working-folder preservation.
This change fixes native runner configuration and launch behavior.

## What Changed

- Remove the Codex-only conversion restriction. Preserve agent identity,
instructions, directories, credentials, and compatible model settings.
Reset incompatible sessions while retaining history.
- Show ACPX Claude and native Codex as distinct provider choices. Remove
ACPX Codex from advertised configuration. Normalize legacy
configurations before fresh runs without rewriting historical run
descriptors.
- Select model catalogs and cache entries by provider. Support refresh
and typed model IDs. Pass exact Claude IDs through session creation,
model changes, and recovery.
- Add verified macOS ARM64 and x64 Claude SDK snapshots. Bound
executable allocation and total snapshot size. Preserve package checks,
dependency isolation, process ownership, cancellation, and Linux
descriptor loading.
- Probe local runtime readiness. Report remote platform checks as
incomplete until the remote runner verifies its runtime.
- Surface actual model rejection and allow correction and retry.
- Repair missing ACPX goal-capability helpers exposed by the post-rebase
live test. Persist and restore the optional capability without breaking
session startup.
- Put Agent identity first and intentionally remove the Capabilities
editor, as requested. This is removal of UI editing, not relocation:
preserve existing capability metadata and API compatibility without
adding another editor. Use the themed select for configurable permission
modes, with normal text instead of monospace.
- Put model and provider under Adapter. Give environment variables their
own section. Fold command and arguments under Configuration. Fold
lifecycle, timeout, and interrupt grace under Advanced Run Policy. Hide
single-option permission controls.

- Open image and video artifact cards in the existing task gallery,
including cards in the artifacts panel. Chat attachment images use the
same gallery. Preserve standalone media previews and download links.

## Verification

- Rebased focused UI/API/database suites: 293 tests passed.
- Rebased native runtime and ACPX suites: 242 passed, 7 skipped.
- Repository typecheck, build, and token gates passed for the runner
changes. Gallery follow-up UI typecheck, build, and token gates also
passed.
- Follow-up UI suites passed (86 tests), packaging checks passed (14
tests), and the final focused runtime suites passed (126 passed, 7
skipped).
- Linux container isolation and lifecycle fixtures passed before rebase
(57 passed, 2 skipped). Rust ACPX provider-session tests passed after
rebase (8 tests).
- Browser tests completed actual Claude and native Codex tasks on macOS
ARM64. They covered conversion, catalog refresh, a non-default catalog
model, a typed `haiku` ID, save/reload, cancel, follow-up session
continuity, invalid-model errors, and recovery.
- Final-revision live tests completed a typed Claude task, a follow-up
with the same provider session, and a native Codex task on macOS ARM64.
- Browser tests confirmed the moved interrupt-grace field saves and
survives reload. Cross-adapter tests cover Claude, Codex, Gemini,
process, gateway, and schema forms.
- Full local run: 7,080 passed, 30 skipped, and two timeouts. Both
timeout suites passed on isolated rerun (84 tests); the failures were
the plugin login-worker exit diagnostic and the runner real-server
vertical slice.
- Final follow-up checks: 50 registry tests and 45 snapshot/installation
tests passed (6 platform-specific skips). Oversized executable rejection
is covered before allocation or reading; unsupported-platform tests
invoke the real installation probe.
- Runner head `ddb5101c483a297f74875ab96b3c66035b002d50`: all CI gates
green, including full runner verification, repository build, typecheck,
general/serialized server suites, browser tests, and canary dry run. [CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34286178670).
- Greptile: 5/5 on that runner head. All four review threads resolved.
Superagent, Socket, and Snyk checks green.
- After snapshot hardening, another real Claude task completed on this
Mac using the rebuilt runtime.

- Gallery follow-up: 148 focused tests passed, covering artifact
selection, shared attachment collections, deduplication, image/video
cards, standalone previews, downloads, and closing. Live browser
verification completed on the settings follow-up: artifact selection,
6-image pagination with wrapping, download action, and closing all
stayed on the same task URL. All checks passed on gallery head
`96136da58ff195bf6ca00b281eb3022ad12d7bd8`: [CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34287987536).
Greptile returned 5/5 on that exact head with no unresolved threads.

- Final settings polish: 96 focused tests, UI typecheck/build, and token
gates passed. A real browser walkthrough verified readable permission
options, identity placement, Capabilities removal, and permission
save/reload. Original test-agent permission mode restored. All 31 checks
passed on final head `e46540d6bf32bfb0566dca16b2f4a75ba437618c`: [CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34292797886).
Greptile returned 5/5 with no unresolved threads.

## Risks

- Capabilities intentionally has no editable UI field after this change.
Existing values remain readable and API-compatible; removing the field
does not erase stored metadata.

- macOS launch now copies verified package files into private snapshots.
The implementation must retain isolation and clean up snapshots on exit.
- Runtime provider or model changes reset the current session.
Historical runs remain available.
- The macOS x64 SDK executable digest was verified, but a live Intel Mac
run was not available. Linux verification used container fixtures, not a
real Claude task.
- Remote environment tests report a warning when only the platform has
been checked. They do not claim package readiness from the server host.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact served model identifier and
context-window limit are not exposed in this session. Used reasoning,
repository inspection, code execution, Rust and TypeScript tests, and
browser automation.

Dotta 0f94521017 fix(runner): restore local session and task integrity (#12721)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the control plane for agents that perform work.
> - Paperclip Runner connects durable provider sessions to individual
task runs through PRP.
> - Provider continuity and per-run authority are different lifetimes.
> - The existing implementation mixed those lifetimes and lost event
metadata between provider frames, runnerd, persistence, API
sanitization, and the task thread.
> - That caused failed continuation, missing progress and Plans,
duplicate replies, hidden failures, and unsafe recovery.
> - This repair gives every heartbeat fresh authority, preserves
qualified provider-session continuity, and restores one lossless
presentation path without changing direct adapters.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

A second native heartbeat could reuse tickets, leases, command receipts,
sequence state, and run identity from the first heartbeat. Provider
phase and item identity could be lost before the UI read them. Redaction
could corrupt protocol discriminators while still missing malformed
credential tails. The task thread could fold progress into the final
response, hide failures, or show more than one final answer. Native
Codex also exposed approval modes that do not yet have a durable
approval bridge.

**Expected behavior**

Each heartbeat uses a new PRP authority epoch. Codex and OpenCode
preserve exact qualified provider sessions; ACPX emits an explicit
continuity event when its qualified process-replacement policy is used.
Every accepted provider event is presented, classified as internal, or
surfaced as unsupported. The task page shows chronological progress,
reasoning summaries, activity, Plans, interactions, terminal failures,
and exactly one final reply. Direct adapters retain their existing path.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Enable the unified experimental Paperclip Runner setting.
2. Create a local native Codex, OpenCode, ACPX Claude, or ACPX Codex
agent.
3. Run response, Plan, structured-question/resume, restart,
cancellation, and failure scenarios.
4. Reload the task while active, waiting, failed, and settled.
5. On the old implementation, observe stale run authority, missing
classifications, incomplete output, or duplicated/folded replies.

**Paperclip version or commit**

The repair is based directly on `master` at
`87d05e194b643810d16d20612115acd01d735d43`.

**Deployment mode**

Local development with the embedded database.

Related work: Refs #12616, #12646, #12666, #12685, and #12700.

## What Changed

- Rotates PRP control-plane, outbox, ticket, lease, command, receipt,
and sequence authority for each heartbeat while carrying forward only a
validated provider-session identity.
- Reads `control-plane-state.json`, validates both durable schemas and
lifecycle values, resumes coherent current runs, archives qualified
settled authority, and quarantines malformed or mismatched scoped state
without moving ambiguous live legacy state.
- Preserves Codex provider phase and stable item identities so
commentary remains progress and only `final_answer` becomes final.
- Adds raw OpenCode HTTP/SSE boundary coverage and canonical reasoning
lifecycle mapping.
- Makes ACPX normalization lossless for visible reasoning, tool
lifecycle metadata, stable bounded identities, Plan revisions,
structured requests, failures, and qualified process replacement. Only
the compatible terminal assistant message is promoted as final.
- Applies schema-aware redaction before generic JWT-shaped detection and
scans every diagnostic string leaf. Malformed raw/escaped quoted
credential tails are redacted in both server and durable Rust state.
- Restores snapshot-style chronological task presentation, expandable
tool activity, inline Plan cards, visible waiting/resume/cancel/failure
states, and exactly one final answer.
- Makes `never` the only qualified native Codex permission mode and
rejects unsupported persisted native modes with remediation. OpenCode
and ACPX policies remain intact.
- Keeps the unified experimental Runner setting as the only enablement
flag. Onboarding and direct Codex, Claude, and OpenCode stay on their
legacy execution/finalization paths.
- Adds cross-language goldens, authority/recovery/fault coverage, exact
response/count assertions, and native plus legacy acceptance scenarios.

## Verification

- Pull-request GitHub Actions run Rust formatting/tests, TypeScript
checks, server/UI tests, builds, protocol drift checks, browser E2E, and
security scans.
- A separate workflow-only validation ref is pinned directly on this PR
head and runs the 35-cell paid local matrix: three core scenarios plus
structured-question resume and restart/resume for native Codex, native
OpenCode, ACPX Claude, ACPX Codex, and direct Codex/Claude/OpenCode.
Run: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/33682434315
- Acceptance requires exact single visible replies, monotonic sequences,
matching envelope discriminators, one semantic terminal, one run
terminal, no unresolved interaction, no duplicate mutation, no secret
leakage, provider continuity, and zero native rows for direct adapters.
- Per maintainer direction, tests are running in GitHub Actions rather
than on the slower local host. Only formatters and static diff checks
were run locally.

## Risks

- Recovery from old or partial filesystem state is sensitive. The repair
fails closed, preserves active or unverifiable authority, and
quarantines only state whose scoped ownership is safe to move.
- Provider event formats can change. Closed validators and boundary
goldens turn new or malformed events into visible diagnostics instead of
silent drops.
- Shared task presentation could affect direct adapters. Runtime-fact
gating plus the direct-adapter matrix protect the existing path.
- Managed and remote providers are not qualified here. Shared code
continues to compile and fail safely, but live qualification is
deferred.

Dotta fdf8c8464d feat(runner): add managed provider backends (#12699)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The Paperclip Runner provides durable, provider-neutral agent
execution.
> - The current stack supports qualified local providers but omits the
managed provider paths from the integration branch.
> - Claude Managed Agents and AWS AgentCore need explicit profile
qualification, durable recovery, usage accounting, and cleanup controls.
> - This pull request adds those managed backends as the third part of
the Runner parity stack.
> - The benefit is managed execution without weakening the default-off
Runner rollout gate.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Cross-cutting: Runner, server orchestration, database profiles, CLI, and
adapter configuration UI.

**Problem or motivation**

The current Runner stack cannot select or execute the managed Claude
Agents API or AWS Bedrock AgentCore Harness backends. It also lacks
qualified profile storage and recovery checks for those remote
resources.

**Proposed solution**

Add qualified managed and remote profiles, API and CLI management, exact
provider selection, durable lifecycle handling, cumulative usage
accounting, bounded cleanup, and retention acknowledgement. Keep
`enableNativeRunner` default-off.

**Alternatives considered**

A direct copy of the old integration branch was rejected because its
provider contracts, model values, credential flow, and migration history
no longer match the current base. A single large parity pull request was
also rejected because stacked review keeps each subsystem bounded.

**Roadmap alignment**

This continues the existing Runner architecture and rollout work. It
does not introduce a separate execution system.

**Additional context**

This pull request is based on the merged #12691 and #12685 stack. It
also closes the delayed security-review findings reported on #12691 by
binding qualified ACPX and OpenCode launch artifacts to the bytes
actually executed. A GitHub search for managed agent, AgentCore, and
Claude managed work found no duplicate public issue or pull request.

## What Changed

- Add Claude Managed Agents and AWS AgentCore provider executors to
runnerd.
- Add qualified managed and remote profile storage, routes, OpenAPI
contracts, CLI commands, and migration 0237.
- Validate profile ownership, enabled state, exact qualified revision,
model, agent version, and secret binding before persistence and
recovery.
- Persist durable provider session and owned skill state for
restart-safe cleanup.
- Reconcile uncertain create responses and delete remote sessions before
owned skills.
- Track cumulative provider usage and enforce positive session spend
caps.
- Recover interrupted AgentCore usage at the next turn boundary by
charging the prior invocation ceiling exactly once; keep the session
gated until an explicit monotonic budget raise.
- Isolate AgentCore AWS configuration from host profiles and
credential-process/SSO configuration while preserving workload identity.
- Require OpenCode 1.18.17 and fixed build-owned provider-pack artifact
paths; remove the ambient executable override.
- Snapshot and content-verify ACPX and OpenCode commands, scripts, and
provider executables before launch. Linux executes sealed inherited
descriptors; macOS uses authenticated private snapshots with retry-safe
rematerialization at the spawn boundary.
- Persist canonical ACPX and OpenCode launch-profile digests, reject
drift across fresh recovery, and make recovery failures sticky.
- Close and journal unsafe ACPX active-turn recovery before any provider
bootstrap or reconnect.
- Add managed provider fields to the Runner configuration UI and
permission projection.
- Preserve the default-off `enableNativeRunner` experimental flag.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck`
- `pnpm build`
- Focused managed server, database, CLI, Runner TypeScript, Rust,
Claude, AgentCore, ACPX, OpenCode, process-supervisor, and
durable-recovery tests passed.
- `cargo test -p paperclip-runner-core --lib --locked` (160 tests)
- `cargo check --workspace --all-targets --locked`
- Native Codex integration tests passed (60 tests); native provider
tests passed (7 tests); server native-runtime tests passed (87 tests).
- Verified-launch replacement, nested-spawn retry, exact-version,
profile-drift, sticky-failure, and no-bootstrap active-recovery tests
passed.
- `git diff --check`
- The PR changes 91 files. `pnpm-lock.yaml` is unchanged. The Rust
workspace lockfile adds the approved `rustix` dependency used for safe
descriptor handling while `#![forbid(unsafe_code)]` remains enabled.

## Risks

- The provider APIs can change while they are in beta. Exact
qualification and fail-closed recovery checks limit drift.
- Remote cleanup can fail after a partial create. Durable ownership
inventories and retry-safe deletion preserve recovery state.
- Migration 0237 adds profile tables. The generated migration and
snapshot pass the repository migration checks.
- Managed execution can incur provider cost. Positive default spend caps
and explicit retention acknowledgement limit accidental use.
- An interrupted AgentCore invocation without final metadata is
conservatively charged to its active session ceiling. This can overstate
cost, but cannot undercount it; later work requires an explicit budget
increase.
- Linux qualified launches use sealed memory descriptors. macOS lacks
executable-descriptor APIs, so the runner uses owner-only private
snapshots and minimizes linked-path lifetime; hostile same-UID processes
remain outside the documented local-host trust boundary.
- The global Runner feature remains default-off.

Dotta 84bedd4ca1 feat(runner): activate qualified OpenCode and ACPX providers (#12691)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Paperclip Runner is the experimental native runtime for governed
agent work.
> - The runtime contracts already describe Codex, OpenCode, and ACPX
providers.
> - The merged control plane still rejected OpenCode and ACPX for new
runner agents.
> - Runnerd also selected only the Codex provider implementation.
> - This pull request activates the qualified OpenCode and ACPX paths
from the form to runnerd.
> - The benefit is one durable runner path with provider-specific
permissions and recovery.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12685

**Subsystem affected**

This change affects the runner package, server orchestration, adapter
configuration, and UI configuration.

**Problem or motivation**

Paperclip Runner stores provider contracts for OpenCode and ACPX. New
agents cannot select those providers. Runnerd cannot execute those
stored provider descriptors. The UI also shows only Codex.

**Proposed solution**

Accept the qualified OpenCode 1.18.17 profile and the fixed ACPX Claude
and Codex profiles. Route them through runnerd. Keep provider selection,
model selection, permissions, credentials, events, and recovery inside
closed provider-specific boundaries.

**Alternatives considered**

One option was to keep the contracts dormant. That option leaves stored
configuration and runtime behavior out of sync. Another option was to
enable every ACPX agent. That option is not safe because Pi does not yet
have the same verified launch path.

**Roadmap alignment**

This change supports the completed cloud and sandbox agent milestone. It
also supports self-healing runs and governed agent execution. It does
not add a new roadmap surface.

## What Changed

- Add one server profile resolver for Codex, OpenCode, and qualified
ACPX descriptors.
- Keep `adapterConfig` as the provider and permission authority for
fresh runs.
- Add Paperclip Runner provider, ACPX agent, and provider-specific
permission controls to the UI.
- Reset the model to a compatible qualified value when the provider
changes.
- Route Codex, OpenCode, and ACPX through the durable runnerd provider
selector.
- Add a durable ACPX executor with bounded state, recovery, events, tool
receipts, and identity checks.
- Remove Codex labels from OpenCode events, results, evidence, and
recovery diagnostics.
- Pass only provider-specific credential names to child processes.
- Keep ACPX Pi unavailable and reject it before process launch.
- Keep the existing Paperclip Runner experimental flag unchanged.

## Verification

## Risks

- This changes provider process selection and durable recovery. The
experimental flag still gates every fresh Paperclip Runner run.
- OpenCode requires a model in `provider/model` form and stays pinned to
version 1.18.17.
- ACPX accepts only exact Claude and Codex profile versions and models.
Pi stays unavailable.
- ACPX steering stays unavailable and reports that limit through the
driver capabilities.
- Child processes receive explicit environment allowlists. They do not
inherit the full server environment.
- This pull request has no database migration.

Dotta 72b9f92d76 fix(runner): restore task runtime parity (#12685)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The task view shows a running agent and lets an operator guide that
agent.
> - The merged runner stack lost parts of the accepted task experience.
> - Native event errors could hide current reasoning from the operator.
> - Queued message steering had no server route on `master`.
> - This pull request restores the task-runtime behavior and keeps the
runner experimental gate.
> - The benefit is a visible and steerable native run with durable
fallback behavior.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

The task view could stop showing current runner reasoning. The steering
action also failed because the server route was absent. Runner
instruction files were not declared as supported.

**Expected behavior**

The task view must show current provider activity. It must use the live
log when durable native events are empty or unavailable. The operator
must be able to steer a queued message into the active native turn.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Enable the Paperclip Runner experimental setting.
2. Start a native runner task.
3. Open the task view while the run emits reasoning.
4. Queue a message and select the steering action.

**Paperclip version or commit**

The regression reproduces on `24a674f8858060e77ea1beb50689d26473e91431`.

**Additional context**

Related closed work: Refs #12592.

## What Changed

- Restored the queued-comment steering route for active native sessions.
- Added durable and queue-bound steering acknowledgements for safe
retries.
- Restored runner instruction bundle support.
- Added live-log fallback when native events are empty or unavailable.
- Restored the compact live reasoning ticker in the task view.
- Added a visible temporary-unavailable state when both activity sources
fail.
- Kept the unified Paperclip Runner experimental gate unchanged.

## Verification

- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck`
- `pnpm -r typecheck`
- `pnpm check:token-gates`
- `pnpm build`
- Seven focused test files passed with 140 tests.
- The final steering regression file passed with 12 tests.
- The broad local test run reached unrelated workspace, port, and shared
database failures. The changed-area tests remained green.

## Risks

- The steering route changes queue and run records in one transaction.
Tests cover stale targets, unavailable sessions, lost responses, and
wrong-queue acknowledgements.
- Native events remain the primary transcript source. The live log is
used only when event data is absent or its poll fails.
- The experimental gate still hides and rejects the runner when the
setting is off.

Dotta 0a422fda52 feat(runner): add remote execution substrate (#12638)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Paperclip Runner gives native runs a durable and governed execution
path.
> - The current native path runs on the control-plane host.
> - Remote environments need an authenticated execution-target contract.
> - The contract must not change direct adapters or enable new runtimes
by default.
> - This pull request adds the remote execution substrate and Daytona
ingress.
> - The benefit is a bounded base for later remote runner transport
work.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12616.
Refs #12352.

**Subsystem affected**

Cross-cutting. This change touches runner transport, server
orchestration, plugin contracts, and shared settings.

**Problem or motivation**

Native execution cannot resolve an authenticated runner ingress through
a remote environment. The server also lacks one provider-neutral
contract for remote execution targets.

**Proposed solution**

Add a default-off runner preview ingress capability. Add
transport-neutral runner connectivity. Add remote execution target and
lifecycle handling. Add a Daytona ingress implementation with redacted
credentials.

**Alternatives considered**

A provider-specific server path would duplicate orchestration and
authorization. A public endpoint without an environment contract would
weaken the trust boundary.

**Roadmap alignment**

This work supports the Cloud and Sandbox agents milestone. It also
supports self-healing runs and governed tool access.

## What Changed

- Added execution-target traits for local, SSH, and sandbox
environments.
- Added plugin RPC contracts for runner ingress endpoints.
- Added authenticated Daytona preview ingress.
- Added transport-neutral PRP outbound connections.
- Added remote runner artifact verification and fail-closed provider
selection.
- Added bounded native session resume, cancellation, and lifecycle
recovery.
- Preserved Codex-only selection for fresh experimental runner starts.
- Preserved all direct adapter execution and finalization paths.
- Removed stale Pi provider-pack requirements that security review
rejected.
- Kept the rollout controls off by default.
- Did not change pnpm-lock.yaml, Cargo, database migrations, or GitHub
workflows.

## Verification

- GitHub Actions will run the repository test, typecheck, build,
security, and policy gates.
- Focused tests cover ingress validation, redaction, execution targets,
remote lifecycle, cancellation, resume, and legacy adapter selection.
- Local tests were not run. The requested verification policy uses
GitHub Actions for this series.
- `git diff --check origin/master...HEAD` passes.
- The diff contains 52 files.

## Risks

- Remote execution crosses a trust boundary.
- The implementation validates target capabilities, artifact digests,
provider-pack pins, and connection metadata.
- The feature remains default-off.
- Fresh native selection remains Codex-only.
- Existing direct adapters remain on the legacy path.
- This PR does not yet make remote Codex runnable. The next PR adds the
Rust WSS and TLS transport.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex with GPT-5.6. The work used high-reasoning agent mode,
repository tools, GitHub tools, and parallel code-audit agents.

Dotta 397de98193 feat(runner): add flagged Codex execution adapter (#12188)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The Paperclip Runner now has protocol, provider, tool, package,
persistence, and hidden server boundaries.
> - The server still cannot select that path for a real agent heartbeat.
> - A new runtime must not change any existing direct adapter.
> - An experimental runtime must fail closed when its rollout flag is
off.
> - This pull request adds one guarded Codex vertical slice through
runnerd.
> - The benefit is a production-built runner path that users cannot
start by default.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #11962

Refs #12111

Refs #12169

Refs #12176

**Subsystem affected**

Cross-cutting. The change affects the runner package, server
orchestration, shared settings, and adapter configuration UI.

**Problem or motivation**

The hidden PRP coordinator cannot execute a real heartbeat. The
application also needs an explicit rollout boundary before it can expose
the experimental runner. Existing direct adapters must keep their
current execution and finalization behavior.

**Proposed solution**

Add `paperclip_runner` as a Codex-only adapter behind the default-off
`enableNativeRunner` instance flag. Select the native runtime only for
that adapter. Persist the run binding before runnerd starts. Wait for
the durable PRP result and terminal event. Resume the real Codex
provider thread on later heartbeats. Keep persisted native runs readable
and recoverable after the flag changes.

**Alternatives considered**

The server could route `codex_local` through runnerd. That option would
change an existing adapter and weaken rollback safety. The server could
expose all providers now. That option would add unreviewed provider
behavior. The build could depend on a prebuilt runner binary. That
option would make source builds architecture-dependent and difficult to
verify.

**Roadmap alignment**

This work supports the shipped enforced-outcomes, governed-tool, and
self-healing-run milestones. It does not add a new roadmap surface. It
is the guarded execution step after the merged hidden runner boundaries.

**Additional context**

This is the next replacement for the closed large runner pull request.
Task-thread presentation remains a separate follow-up so this change can
preserve the current direct-adapter UI.

## What Changed

- Add `paperclip_runner` as an explicit Codex-only adapter.
- Add the default-off `enableNativeRunner` instance flag.
- Reject fresh create, hire, import, switch, and execution requests
while the flag is off.
- Allow edits to persisted runner agents while the flag is off.
- Recover an already persisted native run even after the flag is
disabled.
- Keep every built-in direct adapter on its existing runtime path.
- Persist an immutable native run binding and revisioned completion
contract before runnerd starts.
- Execute server to PRP to runnerd to Codex to server through the hidden
coordinator.
- Validate the durable result against the terminal event and exact
completion criteria before finalization.
- Preserve the Codex provider thread ID and use `thread/resume` on the
next heartbeat.
- Strip unsupported Codex configuration fields from the experimental
adapter.
- Build a target-native release runner binary from source and vendor it
into the server distribution.
- Install Rust only in the Docker build stage. Do not add a workflow or
lockfile change.
- Stop the runner process group on completion, cancellation, and forced
shutdown.

## Verification

- Run `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/paperclip-runner check:all`. All 69
TypeScript tests and 58 Rust tests pass. Protocol, conformance, replay,
formatting, and generated-file checks pass.
- Run the 12 focused adapter, settings, runtime-selection, coordinator,
direct-isolation, and real Codex integration test files. All 186 tests
pass.
- The real integration test uses PostgreSQL, HTTP, WebSocket, runnerd,
and a fake Codex app server. It proves one `thread/start` followed by
one `thread/resume`.
- Run `pnpm -r typecheck`.
- Run `pnpm build`.
- Run `pnpm check:token-gates`.
- Build the Docker `build` target from a clean context. Confirm that the
server distribution contains an executable `paperclip-runnerd` built
with Debian Rust 1.85.
- Start the server through the source-mode tsx entry point with the
package `dist` directory absent. Confirm the vendor shim resolves source
exports and the server boots.
- Run `pnpm test:run` twice. On this macOS host, 405 files pass and 1
file skips. Eight untouched workspace and loopback tests fail because
macOS resolves `/tmp` and `/var` through `/private` and because
PID-derived test ports exceed 65535. Linux CI must pass the full suite.
- Confirm that the diff contains 52 files. Confirm that it contains no
`.github` or `pnpm-lock.yaml` change.

## Risks

- The feature flag is off by default. A fresh native start fails with a
stable error while the flag is off.
- A persisted native run remains recoverable after the flag changes.
This prevents rollout changes from corrupting recorded work.
- Only local Codex execution is accepted. Other providers and remote
work modes fail closed.
- Existing direct adapters do not start runnerd, create native rows, use
native status arbitration, or enter native finalization.
- The runner receives its one-use bootstrap ticket through the child
environment. The server does not put the ticket in command arguments or
logs.
- The server validates the company, task, agent, run, runner, session,
completion contract, result, and terminal binding before it accepts
completion.
- The build compiles a target-native Rust binary. Cross-platform release
packaging remains a later concern. Source builds and Docker builds
compile for their current target.
- Docker needs enough build memory for the existing server TypeScript
compile. The Docker build stage sets a 4 GB V8 heap limit.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip c1c46f1e4e feat: Claude login on the new-agent page before agent creation (#11347)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - The Claude local adapter supports subscription login through a
sandbox
> - The new-agent page must show login before the user creates an agent
> - Test results must not expose raw sandbox diagnostics or secret
values
> - This pull request adds the login UI to both Test lanes and closes
the diagnostic boundary
> - The branch also adds durable cleanup recovery for failed sandbox
teardown
> - Reusable sandboxes must retain both their recorded teardown
configuration and a valid lifecycle path until destruction succeeds
> - The benefit is a usable login flow with fixed public checks,
redacted server logs, and recoverable sandbox cleanup

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Related public work:
[#9488](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/9488) adds
first-class recognition for `CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN` in headless and
remote runs. Related public issue:
[#2681](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/issues/2681) requests
Claude Code subscription support. This pull request adds the login
transport and new-agent UI flow that those changes do not provide.

**Subsystem affected:** Claude local adapter, server login probes,
sandbox provider setup, cleanup recovery, and the new-agent UI.

**Problem or motivation:** The Test lanes did not show the sandbox login
panel in all supported cases. Test results also exposed raw probe
diagnostics, and JSON escapes could end secret redaction early.

**Proposed solution:** Surface the login capability through the bundled
provider manifest. Prepare the same probe runtime in the ACP lane. Send
diagnostics only to redacted server logs. Keep Test checks on fixed
public messages. Normalize login URL hints to allowlisted HTTPS Claude
and Anthropic hosts. Consume JSON escapes during redaction. Preserve
failed sandbox cleanup state across retries and restarts, and prevent
deletion from severing the lifecycle context of a live reusable sandbox.

**Alternatives considered:** Keep raw diagnostics in Test checks or
trust login URL text from the sandbox. Both choices increase information
exposure. Keep separate probe behavior in the ACP lane. That choice
would leave the two Test lanes inconsistent.

## What Changed

- Surface the sandbox login panel on both Test lanes.
- Reconcile the bundled Daytona plugin manifest so
`supportsSetupTokenLogin` reaches the UI capability gate.
- Prepare the ACP Test lane with the same probe runtime as the CLI Test
lane.
- Add the `claude_acp_login_probe_unavailable` warning when the ACP
probe cannot run.
- Send raw sandbox diagnostics only to redacted server logs.
- Keep Test checks on fixed public messages in the ACP, managed-config,
and CLI paths.
- Normalize login URL hints to allowlisted HTTPS Claude and Anthropic
hosts.
- Redact JSON and escaped-JSON secret values, including escaped quotes
and backslashes.
- Preserve orphan cleanup records across provider failures, restarts,
and unavailable plugins.
- Atomically block environment deletion while a live reusable sandbox
lease still depends on it.
- Verify pending cleanup destroys plugin sandboxes with the provider
configuration recorded on the lease, even after the current environment
configuration changes.

## Verification

- Head under review: `506b7fa2d83c36bfa5fd722ee9d95b0c7431c241`.
- Focused environment route/service/runtime coverage passes: 196 tests
across 3 files.
- `pnpm -r typecheck` passes.
- `pnpm build` passes.
- The full Vitest run completed with 4,754 passing and 28 failing tests.
All 23 source-test failures reproduce unchanged on parent head
`58cfe61a33191ce03d965d65085d26064b4888ba`; the other 5 are duplicate
executions from stale `server/dist` output. The failures are unrelated
macOS path/listener and scheduler-fixture failures, so there is no new
bad commit for bisect to localize.
- All required CI checks pass for the current head, including build,
typecheck/release registry, all server and workspace shards, serialized
server suites, canary, and e2e.
- A fresh Greptile review for `506b7fa2d83c36bfa5fd722ee9d95b0c7431c241`
reports 5/5, “safe to merge,” with no blocking failure remaining.

## Risks

- A probe or redaction change could hide useful server diagnostics.
- An allowlist change could reject a valid Claude login URL.
- Cleanup recovery changes could affect provider teardown ordering.
- An environment with a live reusable sandbox can no longer be deleted
until the owning issue or execution workspace completes teardown.
- The implementation keeps public Test messages fixed and sends detail
to redacted server logs.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-5 via Codex — exact model ID: GPT-5; tool use and code
execution enabled; extended reasoning enabled. The implementation author
used AI-assisted development.

Jannes StubbemannandClaude Opus 5 a0bdf388af fix(agents): refuse to hire onto an adapter this instance cannot run (#10256)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - Hiring an agent means choosing a harness (adapter) for it, and an
instance can declare which harnesses it actually runs through
`PAPERCLIP_ADAPTERS`, which `reconcileAdapterAvailability` turns into a
disabled set at boot
> - The hire and create routes validate the adapter type with
`assertKnownAdapterType`, which only asks whether the adapter is
REGISTERED — a disabled adapter passes
> - So an agent can be created on a harness the instance cannot run, and
the failure only appears later, per run, at lease time: `Adapter "..."
is not in the configured adapter registry`
> - By then the error is in a run log, minutes after the choice, with
nothing tying it back to the harness the user picked; the agent also
keeps accepting work it can never do
> - This pull request validates the hire and create paths against the
ENABLED set and refuses with a message that names the adapters that are
available
> - The benefit is that an impossible choice fails at the moment it is
made, in the words of the choice itself, instead of as a run failure the
user cannot act on

**What happened**

On an instance with a curated registry, a company's Chief of Staff was
hired on `cursor_cloud`, which that instance had disabled. The API
accepted the hire. Its first assignment run then failed:

Failed to acquire lease for environment "Kubernetes Sandbox" (sandbox): Adapter "cursor_cloud" is not in the configured adapter registry
```
and its automation run sat in `queued` for hours afterwards. Nothing in
the hire response, the agent detail view, or the agent's status
explained that this harness could never run.
**Expected behavior**
hiring on an adapter the instance has disabled is refused at hire time,
with a message naming the adapters that can be chosen.
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Start the server with a registry that omits an otherwise-registered
adapter, e.g. `PAPERCLIP_ADAPTERS` listing `claude_local` but not
`cursor_cloud`.
2. `POST /api/companies/:companyId/agents` with
`{"name":"CoS","adapterType":"cursor_cloud"}`.
3. The agent is created (201). Every run it attempts fails at lease time
with the message above.
**Paperclip version or commit**
master (`4c55f0d8d`).
## What Changed
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts`: adds `assertSelectableAdapterType`,
which extends `assertKnownAdapterType` with an enabled-set check and
throws `422 Adapter "<type>" is not available on this instance.
Available adapters: <list>`. The hire (`POST .../agent-hires`) and
create (`POST .../agents`) paths now use it.
- Routes that operate on an EXISTING agent keep
`assertKnownAdapterType`, so an agent already running on a
since-disabled adapter is unaffected — the same rule
`listEnabledServerAdapters` already documents ("hidden from selection,
still functional for agents that already use them").
- `server/src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts`: mocks
the adapter-plugin store's disabled set (so the test never writes to a
real `~/.paperclip/adapter-settings.json`), and covers
refuse-when-disabled (including that the message names the alternatives
and that no agent is created) plus create-still-works-when-enabled.
## Verification
```
pnpm vitest run server/src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts
```
13 tests pass, including the two new cases and the existing
unknown-adapter-type test.
Manual: disable an adapter (`PATCH /api/adapters/:type {"disabled":
true}` as an instance admin, or omit it from `PAPERCLIP_ADAPTERS` and
restart), then POST an agent with that `adapterType` — 422 naming the
available adapters, and no agent row is created.
## Risks
Low, and scoped to new selections:
- Automation that creates agents on a disabled adapter now gets a 422
where it previously got a 201 followed by runs that always failed. That
is the intended behavior change, and the message names the valid
choices.
- Existing agents, and every route that acts on an existing agent, are
untouched.
- The enabled set comes from the same store `GET /api/adapters` already
reports, so the API and the picker cannot disagree.
DottaandPaperclip 8b6a06ee25 [codex] Add built-in agents and Reflection Coach bundle (#9206)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Operators need first-party agent capabilities for repeatable company
work, not just manually created one-off agents.
> - Built-in agents need to behave like normal company-scoped agents
while preserving approval gates, permissions, budgets, and audit trails.
> - Reflection and coaching work also needs bundled instructions, skill
content, and a routine so the feature can be installed and reset
predictably.
> - The API, database, UI, portability, and tests all need to agree on
the built-in lifecycle from not provisioned through setup, approval,
ready, paused, and reset.
> - This pull request adds built-in agent provisioning and the
Reflection Coach bundle end-to-end.
> - The benefit is a safer first-party path for Paperclip-managed agents
without bypassing the same governance model used for operator-created
agents.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
No public GitHub issue was found for this exact built-in agent and
Reflection Coach bundle work.
Problem/motivation:
- Paperclip did not have a first-party built-in agent lifecycle for
product-owned agents.
- Bundled agent resources such as default instructions, skills, and
routines needed managed ownership and reset semantics.
- Approval-gated companies needed built-in setup to preserve requested
adapter, budget, manager, and permission state through board approval.
- The board UI needed clear built-in badges, setup affordances,
readiness state, and bundle status without exposing secrets.
Proposed solution:
- Add a company-scoped built-in agent registry,
provisioning/reset/reconcile/status APIs, and Reflection Coach bundled
resources.
- Track bundled managed resources in the database with idempotent
migration behavior.
- Reuse existing agent approval, authorization, budget, and activity-log
paths instead of creating a bypass.
- Add UI setup, badges, gates, bundle panels, and route coverage for
built-in agents.
Duplicate search:
- Searched GitHub PRs for `built-in agents Reflection Coach
repo:paperclipai/paperclip`; only this PR was returned.
- Searched GitHub issues for the same query; no public issues were
returned.
## What Changed
- Added built-in agent definitions, lifecycle state derivation,
provisioning, reset, reconcile, status, and routine-control routes.
- Added the `built_in_managed_resources` migration and schema exports
for bundled instructions, skill, and routine ownership.
- Added the Reflection Coach built-in bundle with default instructions,
skill catalog content, routine template, default permissions, and
managed-resource drift handling.
- Added approval-aware provisioning behavior that preserves requested
adapter config, budgets, manager assignment, and built-in permissions
through hire approval.
- Added authorization and mutation gates for built-in agent and skill
changes, including consented Reflection Coach change paths.
- Added UI surfaces for built-in agent setup, roster/detail badges,
readiness gates, bundle status, routine controls, and route filtering.
- Added company import/export and validator coverage for built-in
managed resources and low-trust/red-team presets.
- Addressed Greptile follow-ups for pending approval reconciliation,
consent-gate error propagation, config-read authorization fallback,
approval-path manager preservation, and non-model adapter provisioning.
## Verification
Local verification:
- `git diff --check public/master..HEAD` passed.
- `pnpm check:token-gates` passed with all gates clean.
- `pnpm exec vitest run
ui/src/components/ConfigureBuiltInAgentModal.test.tsx` passed: 1 file, 4
tests.
- `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/components/EntityRow.test.tsx
ui/src/pages/Agents.test.tsx ui/src/components/BuiltInAgentGate.test.tsx
ui/src/components/ConfigureBuiltInAgentModal.test.tsx
ui/src/components/BuiltInBundlePanel.test.tsx
ui/src/pages/InstanceExperimentalSettings.test.tsx
ui/src/pages/Routines.test.tsx` passed: 7 files, 64 tests.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run
src/__tests__/built-in-agents.test.ts
src/__tests__/authorization-service.test.ts
src/__tests__/company-skills-routes.test.ts` passed: 3 files, 91 tests.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db check:migrations` passed.
- `pnpm -r typecheck` passed after the rebase; `pnpm --filter ui
typecheck` passed after the final UI review fix.
Remote verification on latest head
`1c61f693a4ec881d739022b0e75a8ca8bf8c2cd8`:
- Merge state: `CLEAN`.
- Greptile: `5/5`, zero unresolved Greptile threads.
- PR check rollup: all checks successful, neutral, or skipped as
expected.
- Passing gates include Build, Typecheck + Release Registry, all server
shards, all workspace shards, all serialized server suites, e2e, Canary
Dry Run, policy, review, verify, Socket, Superagent, and Snyk.
## Risks
- This adds a new managed-resource table and migration; the migration
uses idempotent create/add/index guards and passed migration safety
checks.
- Built-in agent provisioning touches approval and authorization paths;
tests cover pending approval preservation, stale retry rejection,
consent gates, and config-read fallback behavior.
- Reflection Coach creates managed instructions, skill, and routine
resources; drift/reset behavior is covered by service tests and redacted
API responses.
- Non-model adapter setup now provisions a `needs_setup` built-in row
before command/endpoint fields are complete; this matches the server
lifecycle and is covered by the setup modal regression test.
## Model Used
OpenAI Codex coding agent based on GPT-5. Exact hosted model ID,
context-window size, and reasoning-mode labels are not exposed in this
runtime; tool use, shell execution, GitHub CLI/API access, and local
code editing were enabled.
Devin Foley d1e6662ed8 fix(server): let codex_local agents inherit host Codex login by default (#8425)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work
> - The `codex_local` adapter spawns the Codex CLI for an agent, and
`server/src/routes/agents.ts` normalizes each agent's
`adapterConfig.env` on create/hire/update
> - PR #8272 added an isolation guard that, on every codex_local agent,
force-set a per-agent `CODEX_HOME` and injected `OPENAI_API_KEY = ""`,
and rejected any "shared" home
> - This broke the common case: operators who deleted `CODEX_HOME` /
`OPENAI_API_KEY` in the UI saw them silently re-appear on save, and
every agent was forced into an isolated home instead of sharing the
device's existing Codex login (`~/.codex` / `$CODEX_HOME`)
> - This pull request replaces the always-on isolation guard with
key-scoped isolation: a keyless agent gets no env overrides and inherits
the host Codex login at runtime; we only carve out an isolated per-agent
`CODEX_HOME` when the agent sets its own `OPENAI_API_KEY`
> - The benefit is that env-var deletion now persists, agents on one
device share the host login by default, and per-account isolation is
still available by setting a per-agent key
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
No public GitHub issue exists. Bug report (following `bug_report.yml`):
**What happened?** In a `codex_local` agent's configuration, removing
the `CODEX_HOME` and `OPENAI_API_KEY` env vars via the UI (clicking the
X) appears to work, but on save they instantly re-appear. The persisted
config never loses the slots.
**Root cause.** `applyCodexLocalIsolationGuard` in
`server/src/routes/agents.ts` (added in #8272) re-injected `CODEX_HOME`
(defaulting to a per-agent home) and `OPENAI_API_KEY = ""` on every
create/hire/update, and rejected shared homes outright. So a PATCH that
omitted those keys had them written back server-side.
**Expected behavior.** Deleting these env vars should persist. A
codex_local agent with no key should inherit whatever Codex login
already exists on the device.
**Steps to reproduce.**
1. Open a `codex_local` agent's configuration with `CODEX_HOME` and
`OPENAI_API_KEY` set.
2. Remove both env vars and save.
3. Re-open the config — both slots are back.
Related (different approach): Refs #8399 (keeps per-agent isolation,
fixes only the empty `OPENAI_API_KEY` slot), Refs #8272 (introduced the
guard), Refs #8403 (managed-auth seeding into isolated homes).
## What Changed
- `server/src/routes/agents.ts` — replaced
`applyCodexLocalIsolationGuard` (+ `assertCodexLocalHomeIsNotShared` /
`normalizeCodexLocalHomePath`) with `applyCodexLocalKeyIsolation`. A
codex_local agent now receives **no** env overrides unless it explicitly
sets `OPENAI_API_KEY`; only then is an isolated per-agent `CODEX_HOME`
injected (and only if the agent has not set its own `CODEX_HOME`).
Keyless agents fall back to the host Codex login at runtime. Dropped the
now-unused `node:os` import and the shared-home rejection.
- `server/src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts` —
updated the validation-route tests to assert env-var deletion persists,
keyless agents get no overrides, and key-bearing agents still get an
isolated `CODEX_HOME`.
## Verification
```bash
cd server && npx vitest run src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts
```
All 6 tests pass locally. Manually verified in the live UI: removing
`CODEX_HOME` and `OPENAI_API_KEY` from a codex_local agent and saving
now persists the deletion (slots no longer re-appear on reload).
## Risks
- **Host-key leak for keyless agents on a host with `OPENAI_API_KEY`
set.** Low/intended: the product direction here is that codex_local
agents inherit the host's Codex login by default; per-account isolation
is opt-in via a per-agent `OPENAI_API_KEY`, which then gets its own
`CODEX_HOME`.
- **Divergence from #8399.** That PR retains the per-agent isolation
default and only stops injecting the empty key, so it does not address
the `CODEX_HOME` re-injection half of this bug. This PR intentionally
changes the default to host-login inheritance. Reviewers should pick one
direction.
- **No migration.** Existing agents that already store these slots are
not auto-cleaned, but operators can now delete them and the deletion
sticks.
Svetlana ZolotenkovaandPaperclip 5320a44088 Guard codex_local agents from shared OpenAI key (#8272)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies.
> - The `codex_local` adapter runs local Codex CLI processes and builds
their environment from persisted agent config plus host process env.
> - A host-level `OPENAI_API_KEY` or shared Codex auth home can silently
make new agents spend through shared credentials.
> - Existing agents can be repaired manually, but new and updated agents
need a persistent guard at the agent configuration boundary.
> - This pull request isolates new and updated `codex_local` agents with
per-agent `CODEX_HOME` and an empty `OPENAI_API_KEY` override.
> - The benefit is that future agent creation or adapter updates cannot
silently fall back to shared OpenAI credentials.
## Linked Issues or Issue Description
Paperclip work item: [ZOL-5477](/ZOL/issues/ZOL-5477).
No matching GitHub issue exists, so the bug is described inline
following `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug_report.yml`.
**Pre-submission checklist**
- [x] I have searched existing open and closed issues and this is not a
duplicate.
- [x] I am on the latest `master` commit for this PR branch.
- [x] I have confirmed the error originates in Paperclip's `codex_local`
adapter configuration boundary, not in a provider outage.
**What happened?**
New or updated `codex_local` agents could inherit a host-level
`OPENAI_API_KEY` or use a shared Codex home when their adapter config
did not explicitly isolate those values. That made it possible for
future agents or manual adapter edits to silently fall back to shared
OpenAI credentials.
**Expected behavior**
Creating, hiring, or updating a `codex_local` agent should either
persist isolated per-agent configuration or reject unsafe shared Codex
home configuration with a clear 422 response. The guard must not print
secret values.
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Create or update a `codex_local` agent without an explicit
`adapterConfig.env.OPENAI_API_KEY` override.
2. Run it on a host where the Paperclip server process has
`OPENAI_API_KEY` set.
3. Observe that the adapter process can inherit the host key unless
Paperclip persists a blocking empty override.
4. Set `adapterConfig.env.CODEX_HOME` to a shared path such as
`~/.codex` or the company-level `codex-home`.
5. Observe that the old code allowed the shared auth home instead of
returning a validation error.
**Paperclip version or commit**
- Reproduced by inspection against `master` before this PR.
**Deployment mode**
- Local dev / self-hosted server with `codex_local` agents.
**Installation method**
- Built from source.
**Agent adapter(s) involved**
- Codex.
**Database mode**
- Not database-related.
**Access context**
- Board and agent configuration paths.
**Relevant logs or output**
- No secret-bearing logs included.
**Relevant config**
- Unsafe shape: missing `adapterConfig.env.OPENAI_API_KEY`, or shared
`adapterConfig.env.CODEX_HOME`.
- Fixed shape: per-agent `CODEX_HOME` plus empty `OPENAI_API_KEY`
override.
**Additional context**
Related PR search for `codex_local OPENAI_API_KEY CODEX_HOME` found:
- #3681 `fix: preserve managed Codex auth and repo-root env loading`
- #5621 `fix: copy worktree codex auth locally`
Those are adjacent auth-handling changes, but they do not add the agent
create/update guard implemented here.
**Privacy checklist**
- [x] I have reviewed all pasted output for PII, usernames, file paths,
API keys, tokens, company names, and redacted where necessary.
## What Changed
- Added a `codex_local` config guard in agent create, hire, and update
routes.
- The guard assigns `adapterConfig.env.CODEX_HOME` to
`companies/<companyId>/agents/<agentId>/codex-home` when missing.
- The guard persists `adapterConfig.env.OPENAI_API_KEY = ""` when
missing, preventing host env inheritance.
- Shared `CODEX_HOME` values for the company codex-home, host
`$CODEX_HOME`, or `~/.codex` now fail with a 422 error.
- Added route tests for create, hire, update, and rejected shared host
Codex home.
- Updated `codex_local` and development docs to describe the per-agent
home contract.
## Verification
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts`
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/agent-skills-routes.test.ts`
- `pnpm typecheck`
- `git diff --check upstream/master...HEAD`
- `gh pr list --repo paperclipai/paperclip --state all --search
"codex_local OPENAI_API_KEY CODEX_HOME" --limit 20 --json
number,title,state,url`
- `rg -n "codex|OPENAI_API_KEY|CODEX_HOME|adapter" ROADMAP.md` returned
no roadmap overlap.
## Risks
- Existing legacy `codex_local` agents with shared `CODEX_HOME` will get
a clear 422 when their adapter config is updated until the shared path
is replaced. This is intentional because silent fallback is the bug
being guarded.
- Low migration risk: no database migration and no secret values are
printed or persisted beyond the empty override.
## Model Used
- OpenAI GPT-5.5 Codex, Codex coding-agent session with repository tool
use.
DottaandPaperclip 38c185fb8b [codex] Add agent permissions and controls plan (#6386)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies by keeping
task ownership, approvals, and operator control inside one control
plane.
> - Agent permissions and plugin-hosted company settings sit on the
boundary between autonomy and governance.
> - V1 needs scoped task assignment rules, plugin extension points, and
clearer company access surfaces without weakening company boundaries.
> - The branch builds the core authorization service, plugin SDK/host
APIs, and UI simplifications needed to support those controls.
> - Paperclip EE plugin surfaces were intentionally moved out of this
core PR per review direction, so this PR now carries only the public
core/plugin infrastructure work.
> - The latest updates preserve the PAP-9937 branch changes that belong
in this PR, remove the `design/` artifacts, and exclude the experimental
`plugin-briefs` package.
> - Greptile feedback was applied through the authorization/audit paths
and the final cleanup commit was re-reviewed at 5/5 with no unresolved
Greptile threads.
> - The benefit is safer assignment control with extension hooks for
richer permission products while preserving simple defaults for normal
operators.
## What Changed
- Added scoped task-assignment authorization decisions and routed
issue/agent assignment mutations through the authorization service.
- Added plugin SDK and host APIs for company settings slots,
authorization policy/grant management, assignment previews, and bridge
invocation scope propagation.
- Simplified core company access UI and moved advanced controls behind
plugin-provided settings surfaces.
- Added retry-now affordances for blocked issue next-step notices.
- Added protected-assignment enforcement for persisted
agent/project/issue policies, including explicit-grant fallback
behavior.
- Added incremental principal-access compatibility backfill for active
agent memberships and role-default human permission grants.
- Added the Markdown code block wrap action fix from the latest branch
changes.
- Removed `design/` artifacts from the PR and removed
`packages/plugins/plugin-briefs` from the final diff.
- Addressed Greptile feedback for plugin actor sanitization, legacy
membership handling, audit pagination, unknown grant-scope metadata, and
startup test mocks.
## Verification
- `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/access-service.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts` -> 2 files passed, 54
tests passed.
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/server-startup-feedback-export.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/access-service.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts` -> 3 files passed, 62
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/authorization-service.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/plugin-access-authorization-host-services.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/server-startup-feedback-export.test.ts` -> 3 files
passed, 28 tests passed.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` -> passed.
- `git diff --check` -> passed.
- `node ./scripts/check-docker-deps-stage.mjs` -> passed.
- `CI=true pnpm install --frozen-lockfile --ignore-scripts` -> passed
with no lockfile update.
- `pnpm exec vitest run
ui/src/components/MarkdownBody.interaction.test.tsx` -> 1 test passed.
- `git ls-files design packages/plugins/plugin-briefs | wc -l` -> 0.
- GitHub CI on `40cd83b53` -> all checks passed, merge state `CLEAN`.
- Greptile on `40cd83b53` -> 5/5, 102 files reviewed, 0
comments/annotations added, 0 unresolved review threads.
- Confirmed the PR diff contains no `design/`,
`packages/plugins/plugin-briefs`, `pnpm-lock.yaml`, or
`.github/workflows` changes.
## Risks
- Medium: task assignment authorization paths are behaviorally stricter
for protected/private policy data, so existing plugin-authored policies
may block assignment until explicit grants or approval flows are
configured.
- Medium: plugin-host authorization APIs expand the surface area
available to trusted plugins and need careful review for company
scoping.
- Low: startup now performs a principal-access compatibility backfill,
but the migration and runtime backfill use conflict-tolerant inserts.
DottaandPaperclip 9a8d219949 [codex] Stabilize tests and local maintenance assets (#4423)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies
> - A fast-moving control plane needs stable local tests and repeatable
local maintenance tools so contributors can safely split and review work
> - Several route suites needed stronger isolation, Codex manual model
selection needed a faster-mode option, and local browser cleanup missed
Playwright's headless shell binary
> - Storybook static output also needed to be preserved as a generated
review artifact from the working branch
> - This pull request groups the test/local-dev maintenance pieces so
they can be reviewed separately from product runtime changes
> - The benefit is more predictable contributor verification and cleaner
local maintenance without mixing these changes into feature PRs
## What Changed
- Added stable Vitest runner support and serialized route/authz test
isolation.
- Fixed workspace runtime authz route mocks and stabilized
Claude/company-import related assertions.
- Allowed Codex fast mode for manually selected models.
- Broadened the agent browser cleanup script to detect
`chrome-headless-shell` as well as Chrome for Testing.
- Preserved generated Storybook static output from the source branch.
## Verification
- `pnpm exec vitest run
src/__tests__/workspace-runtime-routes-authz.test.ts
src/__tests__/claude-local-execute.test.ts --config vitest.config.ts`
from `server/` passed: 2 files, 19 tests.
- `pnpm exec vitest run src/server/codex-args.test.ts --config
vitest.config.ts` from `packages/adapters/codex-local/` passed: 1 file,
3 tests.
- `bash -n scripts/kill-agent-browsers.sh &&
scripts/kill-agent-browsers.sh --dry` passed; dry-run detected
`chrome-headless-shell` processes without killing them.
- `test -f ui/storybook-static/index.html && test -f
ui/storybook-static/assets/forms-editors.stories-Dry7qwx2.js` passed.
- `git diff --check public-gh/master..pap-2228-test-local-maintenance --
. ':(exclude)ui/storybook-static'` passed.
- `pnpm exec vitest run
cli/src/__tests__/company-import-export-e2e.test.ts --config
cli/vitest.config.ts` did not complete in the isolated split worktree
because `paperclipai run` exited during build prep with `TS2688: Cannot
find type definition file for 'react'`; this appears to be caused by the
worktree dependency symlink setup, not the code under test.
- Confirmed this PR does not include `pnpm-lock.yaml`.
## Risks
- Medium risk: the stable Vitest runner changes how route/authz tests
are scheduled.
- Generated `ui/storybook-static` files are large and contain minified
third-party output; `git diff --check` reports whitespace inside those
generated assets, so reviewers may choose to drop or regenerate that
artifact before merge.
- No database migrations.
discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap
with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap
first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`.
## Model Used
- OpenAI Codex coding agent based on GPT-5, with shell, git, Paperclip
API, and GitHub CLI tool use in the local Paperclip workspace.
## Checklist
- [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context
DottaandPaperclip 7a329fb8bb Harden API route authorization boundaries (#4122)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies.
> - The REST API is the control-plane boundary for companies, agents,
plugins, adapters, costs, invites, and issue mutations.
> - Several routes still relied on broad board or company access checks
without consistently enforcing the narrower actor, company, and
active-checkout boundaries those operations require.
> - That can allow agents or non-admin users to mutate sensitive
resources outside the intended governance path.
> - This pull request hardens the route authorization layer and adds
regression coverage for the audited API surfaces.
> - The benefit is tighter multi-company isolation, safer plugin and
adapter administration, and stronger enforcement of active issue
ownership.
## What Changed
- Added route-level authorization checks for budgets, plugin
administration/scoped routes, adapter management, company import/export,
direct agent creation, invite test resolution, and issue mutation/write
surfaces.
- Enforced active checkout ownership for agent-authenticated issue
mutations, while preserving explicit management overrides for permitted
managers.
- Restricted sensitive adapter and plugin management operations to
instance-admin or properly scoped actors.
- Tightened company portability and invite probing routes so agents
cannot cross company boundaries.
- Updated access constants and the Company Access UI copy for the new
active-checkout management grant.
- Added focused regression tests covering cross-company denial, agent
self-mutation denial, admin-only operations, and active checkout
ownership.
- Rebased the branch onto `public-gh/master` and fixed validation
fallout from the rebase: heartbeat-context route ordering and a company
import/export e2e fixture that now opts out of direct-hire approval
before using direct agent creation.
- Updated onboarding and signoff e2e setup to create seed agents through
`/agent-hires` plus board approval, so they remain compatible with the
approval-gated new-agent default.
- Addressed Greptile feedback by removing a duplicate company export API
alias, avoiding N+1 reporting-chain lookups in active-checkout override
checks, allowing agent mutations on unassigned `in_progress` issues, and
blocking NAT64 invite-probe targets.
## Verification
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/issues-goal-context-routes.test.ts
cli/src/__tests__/company-import-export-e2e.test.ts`
- `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/plugin-routes-authz.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/adapter-routes-authz.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/company-portability-routes.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/costs-service.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/invite-test-resolution-route.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/issue-agent-mutation-ownership-routes.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts`
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/issue-agent-mutation-ownership-routes.test.ts`
- `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/invite-test-resolution-route.test.ts`
- `pnpm -r typecheck`
- `pnpm --filter server typecheck`
- `pnpm --filter ui typecheck`
- `pnpm build`
- `pnpm test:e2e -- tests/e2e/onboarding.spec.ts
tests/e2e/signoff-policy.spec.ts`
- `pnpm test:e2e -- tests/e2e/signoff-policy.spec.ts`
- `pnpm test:run` was also run. It failed under default full-suite
parallelism with two order-dependent failures in
`plugin-routes-authz.test.ts` and `routines-e2e.test.ts`; both files
passed when rerun directly together with `pnpm exec vitest run
server/src/__tests__/plugin-routes-authz.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/routines-e2e.test.ts`.
## Risks
- Medium risk: this changes authorization behavior across multiple
sensitive API surfaces, so callers that depended on broad board/company
access may now receive `403` or `409` until they use the correct
governance path.
- Direct agent creation now respects the company-level board-approval
requirement; integrations that need pending hires should use
`/api/companies/:companyId/agent-hires`.
- Active in-progress issue mutations now require checkout ownership or
an explicit management override, which may reveal workflow assumptions
in older automation.
DottaandPaperclip 7f893ac4ec [codex] Harden execution reliability and heartbeat tooling (#3679)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies
> - Reliable execution depends on heartbeat routing, issue lifecycle
semantics, telemetry, and a fast enough local verification loop to keep
regressions visible
> - The remaining commits on this branch were mostly server/runtime
correctness fixes plus test and documentation follow-ups in that area
> - Those changes are logically separate from the UI-focused
issue-detail and workspace/navigation branches even when they touch
overlapping issue APIs
> - This pull request groups the execution reliability, heartbeat,
telemetry, and tooling changes into one standalone branch
> - The benefit is a focused review of the control-plane correctness
work, including the follow-up fix that restored the implicit
comment-reopen helpers after branch splitting
## What Changed
- Hardened issue/heartbeat execution behavior, including self-review
stage skipping, deferred mention wakes during active execution, stranded
execution recovery, active-run scoping, assignee resolution, and
blocked-to-todo wake resumption
- Reduced noisy polling/logging overhead by trimming issue run payloads,
compacting persisted run logs, silencing high-volume request logs, and
capping heartbeat-run queries in dashboard/inbox surfaces
- Expanded telemetry and status semantics with adapter/model fields on
task completion plus clearer status guidance in docs/onboarding material
- Updated test infrastructure and verification defaults with faster
route-test module isolation, cheaper default `pnpm test`, e2e isolation
from local state, and repo verification follow-ups
- Included docs/release housekeeping from the branch and added a small
follow-up commit restoring the implicit comment-reopen helpers that were
dropped during branch reconstruction
## Verification
- `pnpm vitest run
server/src/__tests__/issue-comment-reopen-routes.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/issue-telemetry-routes.test.ts`
- `pnpm vitest run server/src/__tests__/http-log-policy.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-run-log.test.ts
server/src/__tests__/health.test.ts`
- `server/src/__tests__/activity-service.test.ts`,
`server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-comment-wake-batching.test.ts`, and
`server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts` were attempted
on this host but the embedded Postgres harness reported
init-script/data-dir problems and skipped or failed to start, so they
are noted as environment-limited
## Risks
- Medium: this branch changes core issue/heartbeat routing and
reopen/wakeup behavior, so regressions would affect agent execution flow
rather than isolated UI polish
- Because it also updates verification infrastructure, reviewers should
pay attention to whether the new tests are asserting the right failure
modes and not just reshaping harness behavior
## Model Used
- OpenAI Codex coding agent (GPT-5-class runtime in Codex CLI; exact
deployed model ID is not exposed in this environment), reasoning
enabled, tool use and local code execution enabled
