Devin FoleyandPaperclip 9fb06afbfa fix(runner): explain ACPX session-start failures and name typed causes (#18847)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Native Runner starts ACP providers (Claude, Codex, Pi and others)
through the ACPX sidecar. `session.open` starts the provider session.
> - When the provider session does not start, Runner reports
`classification=session_ensure_failed`. If the provider failed with a
plain error and not with an ACP `RequestError`, no provider cause
crosses the sidecar. Then the run error, the run events and the run log
do not say why the session did not start.
> - A provider can also type the failure, for example with ACP's
authentication-required code. Runner reported that failure with the same
generic classification. The server could not tell a limit or a sign-in
failure at session start from other startup failures.
> - On one instance, a Claude agent hit its provider usage limit. The
first run failed in the turn with a typed limit failure. Each later run
for many hours failed at `session.open` with only
`session_ensure_failed`. Operators could only guess the cause from the
timing.
> - This pull request keeps a redacted, bounded cause for every session
ensure rejection. It names a typed provider category in the closed
classification.
> - The benefit: an operator can read why a session did not start, and a
later recovery change can treat a typed startup failure by its category.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #18622, which added the `ProviderFailure` cause for startup and
turn failures. This change closes the remaining startup gaps. Refs
#17543, which is a related open change to the same classifier. It keeps
the JSON-RPC code range as a closed code. The two changes edit the same
lines, so the second one to merge needs a small rebase.

**What happened?**

A native ACPX run failed before its first prompt with `ACPX sidecar
command session.open was rejected (retryable=false,
classification=session_ensure_failed)`. When the ensure rejection was
not an ACP `RequestError`, the run had no other cause data. When the
provider typed the failure (for example ACP `-32000` "Authentication
required"), the classification stayed the same generic value.

**Expected behavior**

Every session ensure rejection keeps a redacted provider cause that an
operator can read on the run. A typed provider failure keeps its
category in the cause and in the closed classification. Provider text
never goes into the closed error text.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Make `runtime.ensureSession` reject with a plain `Error`, or with an
ACP error that has code `-32000`.
2. Open a qualified ACPX runtime through the sidecar.
3. Before this change, the plain error has no `providerFailure`, and the
`-32000` error has category `unknown` and
`classification=session_ensure_failed`.

**Paperclip version or commit**

`master` at `e0276e0166c`.

## What Changed

- `acpxProviderFailure` reads ACP's reserved authentication-required
code (`-32000`) as category `authentication`. It also reads the
`errorKind` that Claude ACP puts in ACP error data (`rate_limit`,
`billing_error`, `authentication_failed`, `overloaded` and others). The
category table is now a `Map`, so an `errorKind` such as `constructor`
cannot select an inherited object key.
- The session ensure path in `codex-runtime-adapter.ts` keeps a cause
for every rejection. A rejection without an ACP error keeps its own
message, redacted with the launch environment and the existing
credential patterns, with category `unknown`. An abort reason is Runner
cancellation, so it does not become a provider cause. A non-`Error`
rejection now keeps its cause on the wrapper error.
- `acpx_sidecar_transport.rs`: for `ACPX_SESSION_ENSURE_FAILED`, a
schema-valid cause with a typed category gives
`classification=provider_<category>` (for example
`provider_quota_exhausted`, `provider_rate_limit`,
`provider_authentication`). An untyped or invalid cause keeps
`session_ensure_failed`. Only the validated enum value is used. The
cause's text never goes into the error string.
- `runnerd-codex-transport.ts`: when a command result has a provider
cause, the reported error now keeps Runner's closed ACPX rejection text,
so the classification stays in the run error. Before, it changed that
text to "Provider request failed". Any other message (for example a
Codex `RPC failed: ...` message) still gets the generic text. Provider
text still travels only in `providerFailure`.
- The credential-free Pi probe (`pi-closed-startup.test.mjs`,
`scripts/pi-public-install-probe.mjs`) now expects
`provider_authentication`. Pi reports its missing credential with ACP's
authentication-required error.
- Docs: `doc/run-log-events.md` and
`doc/architecture/runner-pi-capabilities.md`.

**What the Claude ACP agent returns at session start**
(`@agentclientprotocol/claude-agent-acp` 0.73.0 with the repository
patch, and the ACPX 0.13.1 patch):

- `newSession` and `loadSession` call `createSession`. It throws
`RequestError.authRequired` (`-32000`) only for a claude.ai subscription
when gateway auth is hidden. It throws `invalidParams` for a bad `cwd`
and `resourceNotFound` for a missing resumed session.
- Any other error, for example a failed SDK `initializationResult()`,
becomes a generic `-32603 Internal error`. The ACP SDK puts the raw
message in `data.details`, or the parsed JSON body in `data` when the
message is JSON.
- The typed AIR `sessionFailure` (category `limit`, `access` and others)
is sent only on prompt responses and on `session_info_update`
notifications. `loadSession` history replay also sends one for each
earlier usage-limit message, but that notification does not show whether
the limit is still active. The `errorKind` data is attached only by the
prompt loop.
- Thus a usage limit at session start has no typed signal on the ACP
error. The cause keeps the provider's message, and the existing `API
error: NNN` status parse can type it. This change does not add more
free-text matching.

**Shape for a recovery consumer:** the server reads the cause with
`providerFailureFromError(error)`, as it does now. A startup cause has
`phase: "startup"`, a `category` from the `ProviderFailure` schema and
its `retryability`. The run error keeps
`classification=provider_<category>` for a typed ensure failure, or
`session_ensure_failed` when the category is `unknown`.

## Verification

- `npx vitest run src/drivers/acpx src/cli
src/drivers/provider-failure.test.ts
src/live/runnerd-codex-transport.test.ts
src/live/runnerd-codex-transport-settlement.test.ts` in
`packages/paperclip-runner`: 103 of 104 files passed, 2214 tests. The 2
failures are in `installation-integrity.test.ts`. They fail the same way
on unmodified `origin/master` in this checkout (a temporary `server.js`
cannot resolve a module).
- New tests: a plain ensure error keeps its message with the
launch-environment secret and an `sk-ant-` value redacted; a `-32000`
ensure error gives category `authentication`; a non-`Error` rejection
with `errorKind: "billing_error"` gives `quota_exhausted`; an aborted
handshake gets no cause; typed and untyped ACP errors; a closed ACPX
rejection keeps its classification and a changed one gets the generic
text.
- `npx vitest run src/control-plane/acpx-controller-recovery.test.ts`: 8
passed.
- `cargo test -p paperclip-runner-core --no-fail-fast`: all passed. New
unit test: typed categories give `provider_<category>`; `unknown`, no
cause, a category outside the schema and an extra field each keep
`session_ensure_failed`; other closed codes keep their own
classification. New pipe test through the fake sidecar: the cause
survives the rejection, the classification is typed or generic, and the
cause text is not in the error string. In the first full run, two
`stdio_mcp` relay tests timed out. They passed in the second full run.
They do not use the changed code.
- `node --test test/acpx-sidecar-contract.test.mjs
test/protocol-contract.test.mjs test/pi-closed-startup.test.mjs`: 29
passed. The Pi probe is skipped without the Pi distribution.
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/paperclip-runner typecheck` (TypeScript,
`cargo fmt --check`, `cargo check`): passed. `pnpm --filter
@paperclipai/paperclip-runner build`: passed.
- Server, after the runner build: native provider failure, run
completion, task interruption presentation, Antigravity probe and the
related native session executor tests: 639 passed.
- Not verified: a live Claude account at its usage limit. I could not
run the credential-free Pi probe, because this checkout has no Pi
distribution. Its new expectation follows from the Pi patch, which
raises `RequestError.authRequired` for the missing credential.

## Risks

- The run error for an ACPX startup rejection with a cause now shows
Runner's closed rejection text, not "Provider request failed". This text
has only closed codes and is the same text that the run error showed
before #18622. Provider text stays in `providerFailure`.
- A plain ensure error message now becomes a displayed provider cause.
Redaction applies before the 4,000-character bound. A new credential
format that the patterns do not know can still need a new pattern. The
same risk applies to all provider causes.
- The classification of a typed ensure failure changes from
`session_ensure_failed` to `provider_<category>`. No server code matches
`session_ensure_failed`. The Pi probe expectation is updated.
- The category and retryability are evidence only. This change does not
change retry policy.

## Model Used

- Claude Opus 5.5 (`claude-opus-5-5`) through Claude Code, with tool use
(shell, file edits, test runs). The runtime does not expose the context
window or reasoning configuration.

DottaandPaperclip b22ef22d56 fix(runner): show provider failure details on tasks and runs (#18622)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Native Runner starts providers and records their run outcomes.
> - Provider failures can contain useful details below a generic
protocol error.
> - Those details were lost at the sidecar, command receipt, and run
projection boundaries.
> - A blocked task therefore showed a generic failure even when the
provider gave a clear reason.
> - This pull request carries a bounded, sanitized provider failure
through those boundaries.
> - Operators can read the actual cause on the task and run pages.
Existing recovery policy still controls retries.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #17543 for the related closed JSON-RPC classification work. Refs
#17272 for provider recovery in the legacy OpenCode adapter. This change
adds display evidence for native Runner providers and keeps recovery
policy separate.

**What happened?**

A native Claude session returned an HTTP 429 message below an ACP
`Internal error`. The task and run showed only a generic startup
failure. Operators had to inspect the provider response to learn that
the account was rate limited.

**Expected behavior**

The task and run show the sanitized provider message, provider name,
startup or turn phase, and available HTTP status. Unknown categories
keep the message. Display evidence does not grant a retry or replace a
recovery decision.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Start a native Claude run whose account is rate limited during model
selection, or return a structured provider failure from a Codex or
OpenCode turn.
2. Let the run fail and open its task page.
3. Before this change, the page shows a generic failure. With this
change, the page shows the provider explanation. The run page shows the
same explanation after reload.

**Paperclip version or commit**

Source checkout based on `f8a888a072`.

## What Changed

- Add one JSON Schema for `ProviderFailure` and generate matching Runner
and shared TypeScript readers. Keep the Runner package independent of
the app workspace at runtime.
- Normalize known ACPX, Codex, and OpenCode error fields. Preserve
unknown messages. Redact known credential values and credential patterns
before applying the 4,000-character limit. Do not copy response bodies,
headers, stacks, or prompts.
- Carry startup failures through the sidecar, Rust Runner, durable
command receipts, and private transport error details. Keep provider
text out of generic transport error strings and Sentry failure messages.
- Keep turn failures in authenticated run events. Recover the same
evidence from persisted events during server finalization. Store the
cause in the company-scoped run result.
- Show one shared notice on failed tasks and run details. Keep existing
retry permissions, scheduled retry state, and resolved-task behavior.
- Reapply registered run-secret and current-user redaction to task
display data. Batch secret lookups for only the visible provider causes.
- Document the contract and update the capability maps. Add regressions
for nested Claude 429 errors, OpenAI quota and rate limits, OpenCode
errors, redaction, durable receipt replay, restart finalization, and UI
rendering.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck` passed. `pnpm build` passed. All GitHub Actions
build, test, package, and validation jobs passed on `d49c79ab4a`. The
security checks passed. Greptile gave this head 5/5 with no open review
threads. Paperclip Review remains pending. Its review worker exhausted
six workspace recovery attempts with export_interrupted. A fresh review
request was accepted and is waiting for that saved workspace. The
ordinary Retry action rejected reuse of the stopped request. This is an
external review-worker blocker; no check was overridden. The duplicate
local `pnpm test:run` was stopped after the CI test shards passed.
- Focused server settlement, provider evidence, and restart tests: 93
passed. Runner admission and normalization tests: 103 passed. Focused
Runner wire and terminal tests: 29 passed. The real Rust/sidecar command
receipt replay test passed.
- The new projection test failed before implementation because the task
had no provider cause. The startup producer regression also failed
before extraction moved ahead of the generic error-code replacement.
Both pass with this change.
- Live check: a rebuilt local sidecar received an actual Claude HTTP 429
during startup. The new cause kept the full provider message. A
synthetic task in an isolated local app then reached the same provider
error through the native Runner path. The dedicated run result, task
API, task banner, and run detail all showed the same message after
reload. The later reporting fix keeps run.error generic; a regression
proves the display cause still survives restart and stays out of Sentry
capture.
- The first isolated app attempt failed earlier in
`admission_credential`. An ordinary manual Retry reached the provider
and produced the 429 above. This PR does not claim to fix that separate
admission failure. An initial parallel local database test setup also
failed; the serial restart suite passed.
- Security review found that copying display text into run.error could
forward it to Sentry. A regression failed with that behavior. The fix
keeps the cause in its display field. All 38 settlement/restart tests
and the server typecheck pass.
- All 29 protocol contract tests pass, including bounds and extra-field
rejection. An earlier full Rust core run passed. The later full run hit
one 5-second receipt-limit timing assertion; its isolated rerun passed.
The full Linux and Windows Rust CI jobs passed on this head.
- Review regressions pass for explicit Codex driver identity, native
Rust startup and resume receipt propagation, oversized OpenCode/ACPX
errors, task read-time registered-secret redaction, and the standalone
source closure. The focused Runner run passed 103 tests;
projection/restart tests passed 16.
- Read-time redaction edge cases passed: a missing decryption key omits
only the unsafe optional explanation; expanded redacted messages remain
visible within the Unicode character limit. All 14 task projection tests
and server typecheck pass.
- The package Build check found an old Pi assertion against
Error.message. The probe now checks the exact closed classification in
the authenticated receipt and requires the new provider cause. Both
polling transport cases pass. A local credential-free Pi probe stopped
at admission_installation because this checkout lacks the Pi
distribution; the installed Linux package probe passed in CI on this
head.
- UI coverage includes startup and turn text, unknown categories,
literal rendering of provider text, read-only retry behavior, and
resolved-task suppression. Token gates and map checks passed.
- The live check covers Claude startup on macOS. Codex, OpenCode,
terminal failures, and restart paths have deterministic regression
coverage. The change is not deployed.

## Risks

- Provider messages are untrusted text. The boundary selects specific
fields, redacts credential patterns and known environment secret values,
bounds the message, and renders plain text. New provider-specific secret
formats may need added redaction patterns.
- Optional fields preserve compatibility with older producers and stored
runs. Old runs without the field keep their current fallback text. No
database migration is required.
- The cause stays in company-scoped run data. This change does not send
provider text to first-party Telemetry or add it to OpenTelemetry span
attributes.
- Normalized categories and retryability are display evidence. Existing
recovery classifiers, retry limits, ownership checks, and approval gates
keep their authority.

## Model Used

- OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with reasoning, repository tools, code
execution, and browser verification. The host does not expose the exact
serving variant or context window size.

DottaandPaperclip 54cc522e86 feat(runner): add gated native Antigravity ACP execution (#18188)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages agents and their work.
> - Native Runner must bind each provider turn to the selected task,
account, model, and instructions.
> - Antigravity needs native ACP admission and physical process
ownership across continuation.
> - A saved conversation must not reuse an old process owner or silently
switch its effective model.
> - This pull request adds the native candidate behind exact operator
admission.
> - The default release gate remains closed while qualification is
pending.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Builds on merged #18187. Product account setup and the candidate
producer are in dependent #18189. The repeatable browser journey is in
#18190. Refs: #12503, #14938; those proposals use legacy CLI adapters.

**Agent or provider**

Google Antigravity ACP 1.4.3.

**Why this adapter is useful**

Users need to set up an Antigravity agent and run real work through
their managed Google subscription.

**How the agent is invoked**

Native Paperclip Runner uses the pinned Antigravity ACP runtime. Exact
operator admission is required while qualification remains pending.

## What Changed

- Add native Antigravity ACP model and instruction admission,
selected-account homes, and fenced refresh ownership.
- Carry exact candidate authority from the control plane through Runner,
Rust, the sidecar, and each current run. Clamp daemon lifetime to the
absolute permission expiry, including replacement owners.
- Preserve a rotated OAuth refresh token before later identity
verification can fail, including failed or cancelled startup admission.
Make private lease-close retries safe.
- Bound native probe retirement and retry the exact original owner; do
not delete credential homes before physical proof.
- Preserve Gemini API-key recovery when shared Google subscription
capability is added.
- Resume the same tagged native conversation with fresh per-turn process
ownership and physical native retirement.
- Include native manifests in isolated Rust image stages, release cache
keys, and dev rebuild detection. The workflow changes only extend
existing cache input lists.
- Keep current master provider behavior and append Grok 13, Pi 35, and
Copilot 84 input identities. Preserve prior identities, including saved
Copilot 82 and 83 runs.

## Verification

- Runner TypeScript main checks, profile generators, Rust formatting,
and offline workspace checks pass. The native backend integration target
passes 28 tests.
- The complete transport and cleanup group passes 387 tests without
unhandled rejections. These checks use local scripted children and
actual process and port ownership.
- Saved-profile decoding, native-execution parsing, installation, and
selected-credential controls pass 208 focused tests. All 109
pre-existing profile identity files remain byte-for-byte unchanged.
Copilot, Grok, and shared TypeScript/Rust generation checks pass.
- The final recovery fixture passes all seven cases. After the master
rebase, the combined recovery and owned-Node-runtime group passes all 10
cases. Each expiry case sets one 45-second absolute grant before
startup. It includes the deliberate six-second cold delay, four existing
eight-second command budgets, and active-turn headroom. The test proves
an active turn before expiry and then checks the daemon, owned process
group, child processes, and all three native port fences. The 60-second
test deadline does not renew provider authority.
- The consolidated model-discovery and pending-release group passes 22
tests. Google credential compatibility and auth recovery pass 25 tests,
including existing Gemini API-key recovery. The full product settings
test group remains intact in #18189.
- Earlier failures remain in their original CI runs and local records.
They exposed the Copilot 82 decoder gap, an expired five-second fixture
bootstrap ticket, and a fixture grant consumed before activation on
loaded CI. Each repair has a separate result. Production ticket limits
and admission behavior are unchanged by the final test commits.
- An unrelated decision-expiry check failed in [the earlier CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40941986698/job/123688668997).
Its owning code is unchanged from the base. The unchanged suite passes
20 tests on isolated PostgreSQL. A controlled database rollback
reproduces the earlier wake: clean startup schedules the 120-second
decision expiry, while rollback reconciliation leaves a 30-second
continuation-coalescing wake. The decision stays open, with no wake
delivery or error. The fresh final-head server shard passes; the failed
result is preserved.
- Final native commit `ec6bc7e4d77f5ae0cc4946dbba6c662e95a87f5b` passed
`ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`. Fresh Greptile and Paperclip reviews both
score 5/5, with no open findings. Antigravity retains the recorded
native `.5` closure and exact low-model profile. This PR does not claim
global or cross-platform qualification.

## Risks

- The new transport carries private managed credentials. Exact
ownership, account generation, model, instructions, and native
retirement are fail-closed.
- Only local macOS ARM64 has a verified complete Antigravity runtime.
Default Antigravity task execution remains disabled without current
trusted operator admission. The Google server sign-in lane and
production candidate producer ship in #18189; this native slice does not
expose the subscription catalog choice.
- Shared launch inputs change provider identities. New identities are
append-only; existing recorded identities remain available.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex (GPT-6). The host did not expose the exact model revision
or context limit. The model used tools for code edits, tests, and
review.

DottaandPaperclip 7a8df30953 fix(runner): admit Grok effort through native session metadata (#17942)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip lets people manage AI agents for work.
> - Paperclip Runner must preserve each agent's model and thinking
effort.
> - The Grok migration in #17922 passes explicit effort to native
Runner.
> - The pinned Grok 1.0.13 CLI reports native session metadata instead
of standard ACP config options.
> - The standard effort guard rejects that valid session before the
first prompt.
> - This pull request binds model and effort on Grok session open and
verifies the native reply.
> - Restored sessions keep the selected effort instead of reverting to
Grok's default.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Related: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/17922

**What happened?**
A migrated Grok 4.7 agent with High effort fails at native session.open
before it can run a tool. Grok 1.0.13 has no standard configOptions
response and rejects session/set_config_option. Its native session
metadata supports the requested model and effort. A cold load also
resets effort to High unless the request supplies it again. The upgrade
banner also calls Grok “Codex”.

**Expected behavior**
The native session must acknowledge the selected model and effort before
a prompt. A cold restore must preserve both values. The upgrade banner
must describe the selected harness accurately.

**Steps to reproduce**
1. Upgrade a Grok agent to Paperclip Runner with explicit High effort.
2. Assign a bounded shell task. The pre-fix native session fails during
admission.
3. For the restore case, create a Low native session, close the process,
and load it without effort metadata. The pinned CLI reports High.

**Paperclip version or commit**
Observed at f60ac29cf1 with Grok 1.0.13.

**Deployment mode**
Cloud, with the board operator interface.

## What Changed

- Project the bound model and effort into native Grok session/new,
session/load, and session/resume metadata before transport writes and
observation.
- Require a correlated native acknowledgement with the exact model,
effort, and session identity. Reject conflicting metadata, selection
drift, stale connections, and prompts before admission.
- Connect lazy restored handles through read-only native session
inspection. Keep the existing process ownership and launch snapshot
checks.
- Replace Grok's unsupported standard config setter. Keep the existing
Claude effort path.
- Add behavioral guard cases and a real ACPX client fixture for fresh
and cold Low/High sessions. The fixture resets effort on restore if
metadata is absent, as the pinned CLI does.
- Publish Copilot profile v69 because its source identity includes the
shared runtime adapter. Preserve published v66/v67/v68 bytes and the
reviewed Grok v67 candidate as history. Keep old profiles closed for
launch.
- Explain the native protocol in the Grok Runner guide and use
provider-independent upgrade banner text.

## Verification

- Three native create/load/resume cases failed before the repair. The
pre-fix guard rejected the native metadata reply.
- Seven affected Runner test files: 234 tests passed after the master
merge. These include native Grok admission, the real ACPX transport
fixture, runtime ownership, Claude effort, and profile history.
- The review follow-up extends the same Low/High fixture through a
complete first turn after cold restore. It checks the repeated native
load, original session id, actual response event, and completed turn.
All 127 tests in the three affected Grok/adapter files passed again;
Runner typecheck and source identity checks also passed.
- All 167 existing agent form tests passed. Token gates and diff checks
passed.
- Workspace typecheck passed. Final Runner typecheck and generated
profile checks passed.
- Production `pnpm build` passed, including after the master conflict
resolution. Runner typecheck, profile history checks, and the 234
affected tests passed on the merged source. All 55 Rust ACPX library
tests also passed on the merged source.
- Real pinned Grok 1.0.13 metadata probes reproduced the unsupported
standard setter and native create/load/resume behavior. No model prompt
was sent. An earlier actual ACPX runtime probe passed fresh and cold
Low/High metadata checks. A repeat with an explicitly isolated HOME
failed authentication before session creation, so it does not count as
final live acceptance. The deterministic transport fixture is green; a
deployed shell task remains required.
- `pnpm test:run` did not complete locally. Embedded Postgres failed
during bootstrap after five attempts. This is the same local fixture
limitation recorded for #17922. Fresh PR CI must pass before merge.
- After deployment, retry the original bounded shell task with the saved
Grok 4.7/High configuration. Verify actual tool output, a successful
run, and Done state after reload.

- Final commit `810d84fd19728e7d798989582f26b05f69166db2`: all CI gates
passed. Greptile and the formal Paperclip review both reached 5/5. No
unresolved review threads remain.

## Risks

- This depends on the pinned Grok 1.0.13 native metadata format. Missing
or conflicting replies stop admission instead of silently changing
effort.
- Cold restores must make one read-only native inspection call before
admission. The existing handshake timeout and process ownership checks
still apply.
- The shared adapter changes Copilot's source identity. The new current
profile includes the final source hashes; the prior profile remains
decodable but cannot launch.
- This does not change the Grok CLI version, account selection, search
policy, dependency patch, or lockfile.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6. The exact serving model ID and context window are
not exposed in this session. The agent used reasoning, code editing,
shell tools, and browser tools.

DottaandPaperclip f60ac29cf1 fix(runner): migrate Grok Build with native reasoning effort (#17922)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Harness selection maps supported agents to Paperclip Runner.
> - The native Runner already supports Grok Build, but its migration
mapping excludes Grok.
> - Grok agents also have a thinking-effort setting that the native
execution contract does not carry.
> - This pull request adds the migration path and preserves explicit
Grok effort through startup and resume.
> - Operators can upgrade an existing Grok agent without silently losing
its model, account, or effort.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Existing Grok Build agents have no Runner selector or upgrade action.
Adding only the mapping would route conversion through the Codex
fallback and lose Grok execution semantics. Native execution also
ignores the legacy reasoning-effort field.

**Expected behavior**

A qualified Grok agent can explicitly upgrade. The saved model, account,
instructions, history, and supported effort remain intact. Unsupported
legacy settings fail before saving. The provider must acknowledge the
selected effort before inference.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Open the runtime page of an existing Grok Build agent on a qualified
Linux x64 or macOS ARM64 computer.
2. Observe that the Runner selector and upgrade action are absent.
3. Compare the native execution input with the saved legacy
reasoning-effort setting.

Related work: #13882 introduced native Grok Build. #15422 covers the
earlier default-runner work. This change extends the current shared
selection contract.

## What Changed

- Add the Grok harness mapping, qualified platform limits, upgrade
action, and company-scoped computer qualification.
- Translate Grok settings to ACPX without changing the selected account
or explicit model. Resolve the legacy default model to the native
default. Preserve the effective legacy search policy. Reject
incompatible command, argument, permission, and turn-limit settings.
- Add native execution input v10 for explicit Grok effort and search
policy. Preserve historical schemas. Enforce disabled search through
Grok requirements and bind it across startup and recovery.
- Apply and verify ACP `reasoning_effort` before prompting. Bind the
value to provider descriptors, checkpoints, runtime identity, and resume
checks.
- Use the Grok catalog and effort choices in the task composer. Apply
task model and effort overrides while retaining the agent account and
search policy. Update runtime controls, portability/default handling,
documentation, and capability maps.
- Advance Pi and Copilot source attestations for changed shared
transport and recovery code. Keep historical identities intact and
update all Rust integration fixtures.

## Verification

- Migration and review regressions were reproduced before the fixes.
Coverage includes the Grok mapping, default model, explicit effort,
implicit search policy, task overrides, and incompatible legacy
settings. The broad migration, route, immutable-input, and composer
check passed 478 tests. The final catalog and task-input check passed
135 tests.
- Runner startup, recovery, search policy, and profile checks passed 361
tests, with one platform skip. The final source-identity,
search-admission, and transport event-pump check passed 89 tests.
- All 757 Rust workspace tests passed for the broad implementation.
After the final source attestation update, all 55 ACPX profile/session
tests passed.
- `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed for the implementation.
Server and Runner typecheck passed after the final production change.
Server `tsc --noEmit` passed after the final test-fixture change. Docker
context integrity, token gates, maps, generated protocol data, and
replay goldens passed.
- The v10 startup fixture initially used an ambient local Grok login and
failed on CI. An explicitly empty credential home reproduced all four
failures. The fixture now supplies a synthetic key and a private empty
home. A separate case checks that missing credentials fail closed. All
seven selected Grok v10 and Claude v9 startup cases pass without host
credentials.
- The full local suite could not complete because embedded PostgreSQL
failed before database-backed fixture setup. The broad executor-suite
attempt hit the same limit and was stopped. Neither attempt is counted
as passing. Current-head CI must verify those paths before merge.
- Earlier CI found missing Rust input fields, stale source attestations
and exact fixture pins, a missing Docker context entry, and an outdated
import expectation. Those failures were fixed and checked locally. The
CI logs retain the original failures.
- Different earlier CI runs also failed unchanged cleanup pagination,
device-login timeout, and chat lost-response recovery cases. Later
attempts passed the cleanup and login cases without changes to those
implementations. Their causes remain unproven. The original evidence
remains in [the first
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40563402840),
[the login
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40571128328),
and [the chat
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40573072163).
A passing retry does not establish a root-cause fix.
- Both reviews rate current head
`16fba9b4cdf12bc7945e6628912e79da42959f35` 5/5. All current-head CI
gates pass in [run
40576580699](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/40576580699).
All 60 check runs completed cleanly, including the four intentional
skips and the neutral 5/5 Paperclip review. The legacy security status
is successful. No review threads remain unresolved.
- Staging migration and a real shell task are pending deployment. This
PR does not claim full Grok provider qualification. Reviewers can verify
the operator path by upgrading a qualified Grok agent, checking its
saved model and effort, and running a shell task through native
execution.

## Risks

- Explicit effort and search policy require the matching Runner and
sidecar build. Older immutable execution inputs keep their existing
schemas.
- Providers that omit or reject the selected effort fail before a
prompt. Unsupported effort does not fall back silently.
- Existing agents retain their saved runner until an explicit change.
New Grok agents use native execution only on qualified platforms.
- Grok token and cost reporting remain unverified, as before.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family. The exact serving model ID and
context-window capacity are not exposed in this session. Used reasoning,
source editing, shell execution, and browser inspection.

DottaandPaperclip d855e550ad Finish Copilot native runtime on current master (#15701)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Paperclip Runner controls provider processes, permissions and task
completion.
> - Copilot needs its pinned distribution, native message identities and
accepted semantic completion receipts.
> - The release must preserve saved-token access and task lifecycle
guarantees.
> - This pull request will keep the current completion and recovery
fixes while adding the Copilot runtime.
> - The benefit is a reviewable part of the Copilot production release.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #14434. Supersedes the runtime work in #15560. This is the first PR
in the stack; #15703, #15705 and #15706 follow. Related alternative
adapter work: #15881. This change uses the shared Runner path.

## What Changed

- Pin Copilot CLI 1.0.88 and bind the integrated implementation as
profile45.
- Keep native instruction, permission, receipt, process ownership and
cancellation boundaries.
- Preserve current master completion continuation and remote
verification behavior. Other provider release identities stay unchanged.

## Verification

Final reviewed source
[`4f3f1af807d2ed21adabb04c2f27f4df9c4bc8d5`](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/commit/4f3f1af807d2ed21adabb04c2f27f4df9c4bc8d5)
includes master `cde944ed75648adfb569e86133adc8b118b55dd6`. The combined
four-part PR tree matches it except for the CI-owned lockfile. Every
prior public PR head remains an ancestor. Released master migrations
remain unchanged; Copilot adds migration361. No unrelated provider is
enabled.

Copilot CLI1.0.88 and profile47 retain digest
`sha256:55044aa235e88b3fe36ec8a556ee1e3382590870aab907e4462ef7d64af49cea`.
The pending qualification marker is removed. The [qualification

reports **20/20 Product cells,154 assertions;7/7 protocol cases,46
assertions** against frozen installed application
`c2616370800f5f6df45246b0890ba35a7cd2faab`. Both environments use the
exact authenticated model `gpt-5.6-luna`. Every passing Product case
confirms cleanup. Automatic behavior retries are disabled. Original
failed attempts remain recorded.

The ordinary installed remote journey passed saved-token selection,
authenticated model discovery, normal UI save/reopen, metadata-only
Test, task completion, accepted receipt and an exact19-byte browser
download. An open model catalog caused no new discovery requests
during117seconds. Actual installed runtime smokes passed on macOS ARM64,
macOS x64 under Rosetta and native Linux x64 on Daytona. Raw token
browser entry was not exercised; the encrypted connection was created
through the normal API.

The original Daytona file attempt timed out during delayed semantic
dispatch. Its precise stalled layer remains unresolved. Independent
ordinary delivery and the other19 cells passed before one instrumented
recheck passed8/8 with unchanged source, prompt, assertions and deadlines.
No causal latency repair is claimed.

After current-master reconciliation,129 connection tests,59 runner
tests,72 shared eval tests and88 recovery/workspace tests pass.
Migration generation/safety, unchanged profile identity and UI token
gates pass. Prior required CI was green. Fresh exact-head required CI
and E2E are green for all four updated heads. Each has a fresh
Greptile5/5 review and zero unresolved review threads. The [final
normal-package cloud
build](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39414239704)
is running. Recursive typecheck, full CI test shards, build and all8
browser shards pass. These checks cover the final source; no additional
local full-suite pass is claimed.

The [frozen image
build](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39334401638)
and [original normal package
build](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39334407471)
passed. The exact image is published and independently retrieved
anonymously. No separate full-image scan is claimed. All18 original
normal archives were scanned with zero selected credentials. Docker
builds run in the cloud. Provider USD remains unknown and
GitHub-attributed.

**Qualification is complete on the recorded frozen build. Normal
protected merge, automatic master canary publication and final
shipped-package local/Daytona canaries remain. No production deployment
is claimed.**

## Risks

Shared Runner behavior can affect active tasks. Exact profile admission
rejects stale runtime identities. The final campaign and installed
canaries remain release gates.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact serving model ID and context
window are not exposed in this task. Used for code changes, review and
tool-assisted verification.

DottaandPaperclip 95672307f4 feat(runner): carry acknowledged Claude effort through native resume (#15994)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - The native runner must carry each supported agent setting.
> - Claude effort must reach its ACP session before a prompt and after
resume.
> - Installed Claude setup must find the owning server package without a
qualification override.
> - This PR adds those shared contracts and preserves historical
readers.
> - The Claude default change can then use the same runner path.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #15683. This prerequisite follows the actual Codex squash
`adb69e8f09852c772d9901ae270e5b2d66e39c77`. Consumers: #15993 and
#15997. Related scope: #15422, #13978 and #15224.

## What Changed

- Add native-input v9 for Claude effort. Preserve v1–v8 readers,
including v7 explicit home modes, v8 Muse, Dot and Grok Bot.
- Preserve prepared task input and constraints through the newer
contracts, including completion-only continuation without wrapping
compact model input again.
- Carry effort through daemon/sidecar admission; require provider
acknowledgment before prompting and after resume.
- Find installed server package authority through the verified canonical
layout. Retain package-integrity, digest, architecture and no-follow
checks.
- Return Claude startup cancellation promptly while retaining unfinished
settings writes and the lifetime lease through cleanup. Preserve merged
Codex close/cleanup behavior.
- Retain both independently authored historical Pi profile-24
declarations. Combined master/Claude source attestations use Pi profile
27; pending Copilot remains profile 22. This does not expand either
provider's qualification boundary.

- Avoid a spare verified executable snapshot when Claude effort control
reuses its initialized provider. Preserve cold-control snapshot renewal
and acknowledged effort.

## Verification

- Reconciled with master `9179d8dcc3e908c217fde4f63c9d08ccf8132eeb`,
retaining its task-loading, progress, skill-retention, permission and
OpenRouter changes.
- Final focused protocol/provider checks passed 155 tests (one skipped),
the updated Pi attestation check passed 18 (one skipped), and 91
evaluation/catalog checks passed. Generated TypeScript/Rust profile
checks and Rust formatting pass. The integrated consumer's
TypeScript-only runtime build also passes.
- Earlier branch checks passed 369 protocol tests (one skipped), 72
catalog checks and TypeScript checks/build; their source identities
remain historical. No Rust compilation or Docker build is needed locally
for this proof.
- Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh
Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required
typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed
remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs.
- [Earlier four-target package
qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39267321383)
passed on source `04e0202ca81387b17cbe7fd094a8338648356fe9`; it is not
relabeled as proof for the final merge. Existing failures and
unknown-cost holds remain preserved.
- Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh
Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required
typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed
remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs.

- Latest-application manual continuation passed in 37.942 seconds on
`695e5c005a85bddc8711d3fcddcaf6b7e1fb64d0`, with High effort, native
Opus 5.5, Anthropic API attribution, the same resumed Claude session, an
independently checked 635-byte file and persisted Done status. It uses
the earlier verified Mac daemon; the preceding-source package
qualification passed at `dca62c7aeb4b45f0dd91a8e18d386a16a2658ef8`. That
package run predates the small TypeScript startup fix and is not
relabeled as qualification for it.
- Upgrade limitation: changed compiled sidecar identity rejected old
durable launch state and recovery hit session-open bounds before
eventually resuming. That attempt was operator-cancelled and retained;
the successful manual continuation does not qualify seamless upgrades.

- Local latency profile, Opus 5.5/High unchanged: three alternating
real-ACP loopback samples per variant reduce median provider-ready time
from 5.081s to 4.034s. The matched real API task startup improves from
5.533s to 4.348s, but total reply time changes from 17.933s to 20.221s
because agent work varies. This establishes a startup saving of about
one second, not a consistent total-reply speedup. A real candidate
follow-up passed in 20.146s and resumed the same saved session. The
loopback fixture makes no external model requests; failed initial probes
remain retained.
- The startup change passes 107 focused runtime/effort/lease tests, 53
profile checks (one skipped), TypeScript checking and the
TypeScript-only runtime build. Native hire fixture checks pass 70 tests;
their first local run retained a socket-hangup failure and stale
OpenCode expectation, both accounted for before the passing rerun.
Broader required checks run in cloud CI.

## Risks

- Explicit Claude effort needs a daemon and sidecar that support input
v9. Historical readers stay available; downstream builders and
permission-pin transport checks must also use v9.
- Source-bound profile changes may require reopening older Pi/Copilot
sessions. Copilot remains pending and executable package closures remain
unchanged.
- This prerequisite changes shared runtime behavior; Claude default
selection remains in #15993/#15997. No database migration or Codex
default change is introduced.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository tools, code
execution and browser testing. The exact serving model ID and
context-window size are not exposed in this session.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip 6f8ad3d77b Add verified session-local stdio MCP transport to Runner (#16526)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agent runs and their tool authority.
> - Runner supplies provider sessions with assigned MCP connections.
> - The current native connection binding supports an HTTP gateway only.
> - Execution hosts also have private local tools with stdio MCP
interfaces.
> - Those tools need session-local registration and safe concurrency.
> - This pull request adds verified local stdio assignments beside the
existing gateway.
> - Providers receive the existing tool schemas and image content.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation**

Runner can supply a native provider session with an HTTP MCP gateway,
but cannot also assign a verified local stdio MCP server without
persistent provider configuration. Execution hosts need a session-local
transport for local MCP tools, coordination for calls sharing a
resource, and native schema/image delivery. The pinned native Codex
client drops MCP images when `structuredContent` is also present.

**Proposed solution**

Add general stdio MCP transport support using host-assigned executable
digests, arguments, environment and a private Unix socket identifying
the shared resource. Tool implementations supply their own schemas and
responses; Runner forwards their native MCP schemas and content.
Register the transport for the current provider session. Serialize calls
across processes, keep unknown outcomes fenced, and authorize assigned
native Codex tools without a new prompt while routing explicit tool
confirmations through existing PRP permission requests. Retain the HTTP
gateway and applicable permission policy.

**Alternatives considered**

Reimplementing tools or translating their actions into provider-specific
APIs would tie the transport to individual tool implementations. Global
provider config would leak session assignments. Shell commands alone do
not deliver native MCP images or preserve MCP approval requests.

**Roadmap alignment**

This completes the existing Runner transport boundary. Related: #10690
(operator config for the legacy ACPX engine), #11605 (gateway delivery
of installed stdio connections), #16486 (preconfigured provider homes).
This change assigns local tools on the execution host and leaves those
administration paths intact.

## What Changed

- Add reserved, verified stdio bindings for native Codex and through the
shared ACPX runtime. ACPX clients must support stdio MCP assignments.
Read-only sessions omit the binding. No home/project config is
rewritten.
- Run the backend with only its assigned environment through the
verified executable launch path.
- Serialize all calls sharing a private Unix socket across sessions.
Metadata remains responsive. Queued cancellation prevents execution;
active calls remain fenced until acknowledgement. Unknown outcomes
require a resource restart.
- Authorize host-assigned native Codex tools without a new per-call
prompt, matching existing execution-host shell utilities. Preserve
explicit tool deny/prompt rules. Route requested MCP tool confirmations
through one-time PRP approvals, bound to the active thread and turn.
Keep shell escalation disabled and existing tool deny rules effective.
ACPX adapters retain their applicable ACPX permission policy.
- Preserve schemas and image blocks. For native Codex 0.160/0.162,
retain structured metadata as MCP text on image-bearing results to avoid
the client's image-loss bug. ACPX adapters receive the original
response.
- Document transport authority, cancellation and recovery limits.

## Verification

- `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed with pnpm 9.15.4 and Rust
1.97.1 on macOS arm64.
- Before Apex, full `paperclip-runner-core` Rust tests passed. After the
fixes, all 379 library tests and eight subprocess tests using a generic
stdio MCP fixture pass. Those subprocess tests cover schema/image
passthrough, assigned-only environment, executable drift, call
serialization, cancellation and unknown outcomes. The native Codex suite
passed 91 tests with two intentionally ignored;
`receipt_limit_rejects_the_call_and_keeps_polling_when_interrupt_fails`
timed out waiting for `turn.interrupted`, including an isolated retry.
The unchanged pre-fix commit `80917b301a2309f7966a466cf0c198a2112be2d5`
reproduces the same timeout in isolation; this local native-suite run is
not claimed as fully passing.
- All 252 native controller tests pass against the final narrowed
approval branch. Focused TypeScript transport/permission suites passed
(298 tests); final binding, read-only host, policy and adapter checks
passed (105 tests).
- **Provider-client smoke coverage:** pinned Codex 0.160.0 through
native Runner and Claude SDK 0.3.286 used local stdio MCP servers and
loopback model API fixtures without live model credentials. These
clients define the smoke-test coverage; this is not an exhaustive
adapter compatibility test. Image responses reached the next model
request as typed image blocks. Native Codex checks also verified
unattended execution without approval requests, explicit per-tool prompt
denial without backend execution, disabled-tool rules, and stale-turn
approval rejection.
- Two Greptile concurrency findings were reproduced with failing
subprocess tests and fixed: pending cancellation under output
backpressure, and a ctime-based fence reset after chmod. Initial checks
exposed Codex CLI option-scope and key-quoting errors, which were
corrected. The existing ordinary elicitation regression also exposed an
overly broad request branch; the final branch handles explicit tool
approvals only.
- `pnpm test:run` was attempted. The broad local server suite hit
persistent embedded PostgreSQL startup failures and unrelated local Git
fixture failures; it was stopped with the failure log retained. Those
local results are not claimed as passing. Hosted Linux CI gates passed
on the reviewed runtime commit, as recorded below.
- First Apex review found three additional defects, now fixed with
regressions: keep the resource-lock socket snapshot instead of sampling
the socket twice; project native permission requests with durable
turn/item IDs while retaining provider IDs in details; validate provider
response conversion before marking a request as settling. The retry
regression failed before the fix. Focused Codex request/adapter checks
pass (23 tests), server permission projection passes (16 tests), and all
379 Runner library tests pass. The broader database-backed bridge suite
was attempted but its local PostgreSQL setup timed out; 29 tests did not
execute. This local failure is retained, not claimed as passing.
- Runtime acceptance before the documentation clarification, on
`bd4fccae001157beb5bc76ff17c1920a5db3105a`: standard Greptile 5/5, then
Apex 5/5 with no unresolved threads; all 60 checks complete successfully
or intentionally skip. Ten CI jobs were interrupted by the same runner
shutdown, including one stale job that required cancellation before
retry; the same-commit retry passed. Hosted Rust tests also pass,
including the native suite with the local baseline timeout noted above.
- `git diff --check`, map validation, and pre-push secret/PII scan
passed.

## Risks

- No live model account or deployment isolation qualification was run.
The loopback fixture proves the actual vendor-client request format, not
model interpretation.
- Stdio MCP support uses the current host-assignment contract: each
binding requires a verified executable and a private Unix socket
identifying the serialized resource. Other platforms retain the HTTP
path. No provider version was upgraded.
- A lost acknowledgement blocks subsequent calls until the host restarts
the assigned resource. Direct shell calls are outside this MCP fence and
retain the existing shell policy.
- Preconfigured Claude remains unattended and denies interactive
approval requests. Host assignment authorizes native Codex local tools;
it must be supplied only for sessions already authorized to use the
resource.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6, with reasoning and repository/tool execution. The
session does not expose a more specific model identifier or
context-window size.

Nicky LeachandPaperclip fa9f3f8a08 feat(runner): support preconfigured user homes for Codex and ACPX (#16486)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - Runner launches the selected provider and keeps durable session
state.
> - Runner currently prepares private provider homes for each session.
> - Operators can already have working login, skills, and MCP
configuration on the execution machine.
> - This PR adds an explicit mode that uses that existing setup.
> - Runner keeps its task bridge and session ownership while leaving the
user's configuration in place.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Problem or motivation:** Rebuilding a provider home is unnecessary
when the execution account is already configured.

**Proposed solution:** Add `homeMode: "preconfigured"` to Runner adapter
config and runnerd transport options. Keep `"isolated"` as the default.
Initially support native Codex and ACPX Claude.

**Alternatives considered:** Continue copying user configuration into a
private home, or add an approval workflow. Both add work outside this
feature's scope.

**Roadmap alignment:** This extends the existing cross-provider Runner.
It does not add another runtime.

Related work: #14056 covers managed Codex credentials. #14474 covers
command environment delivery. This mode uses user-owned credentials and
retains the existing launch boundaries.

## What Changed

- Add a closed v7 launch contract for the selected home mode. Existing
contracts retain their behavior.
- Keep homeMode under operator control. Reject task overrides and
agent-authenticated changes, including removal through replacements,
adapter changes, or rollback. Ignore stored task values and exclude it
from automatic hire inheritance.
- Skip managed AI login, assigned-skill materialization, and external
MCP setup in preconfigured mode. Preserve the Runner task/completion
bridge.
- Keep protocol state and provider lifetime fences scoped to the Runner
session. Different sessions can share a home.
- Fail preconfigured ACPX planning/read-only launches before provider
admission until a read-only user-home launch is qualified. Use isolated
mode or native Codex for planning.
- Reject ACPX approval requests. Keep native Codex on `never`. Local
permission rules and hooks remain effective. Initially require the
default Runner ACPX `approve-all` setting; other Runner policies are
unqualified in this mode and fail before launch.
- Keep the internal ACPX bridge in a stable session namespace,
preserving an existing user MCP server named `paperclip`.
- Reject preconfigured ACPX Codex before launch until a session
permission profile can enforce Runner-state denial. Remove the
unprotected full-access mode switch; use native Codex or isolated mode
for that model family.
- Bump Pi to profile 23 because its attestation covers shared Runner
source changed here. Preserve profile 22 for historical recovery, and
update Docker/package verification inputs.
- Fence recovery on mode and home bindings. Fail missing
provider-history recovery without starting a replacement session.
Exclude the external Codex home from backups and credential cleanup.
- Discover remote HOME on the execution machine. Do not project
controller HOME or XDG paths onto it.
- Separate task instructions from Codex ACP isolation and update the
generated provider digest.
- Keep remote configured-environment manifests consistent when dropping
controller paths. Preserve exact Claude model IDs through per-launch
environment settings, without editing the user home or patching the
provider.

## Verification

- Targeted local checks cover native contracts and launch allowlists,
user-config preservation, provider admission, permissions, session
recovery, remote environment projection, heartbeat preparation, and
operator-only configuration. Runner, shared, and server TypeScript
checks and the Rust binary build pass; generated ACPX profiles are
current.
- Following the latest master integration, all 757 server
configuration/executor tests and 115 Runner admission/recovery tests
passed. Additional review-fix checks passed: 103 planning contract/host
tests, 78 provider-backend tests, 95 route/preparation/inheritance
tests, 43 task-validator tests, and 43 workspace-policy tests. Counts
describe separate runs and can overlap.
- The real pinned Claude ACP/SDK regression reproduces exact-model
aliasing without the fix (`claude-sonnet-5-5` becomes `sonnet`) and
passes with the fix. All 89 adapter tests pass. User settings remain
byte-for-byte unchanged.
- Localhost-only Claude SDK probes with synthetic credentials verify the
private bridge runs, local `ask` reaches the existing reject callback,
local `deny` blocks without a callback, and a user MCP server named
`paperclip` remains available. No user model allowlist is required.
- Review regressions cover fail-closed provider admission, saved-mode
recovery before routing, controller-home path removal without
configured-environment manifest drift, pre-launch rejection of
unqualified read-only ACPX launches, and denial of task/agent changes to
the operator-owned home mode.
- Before rebase, `d4d4ee2aebe4cb88c4f4d9ef8e22fed4b36b87be` received
standard Greptile 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Prior Apex findings
are fixed and covered by regressions. No manual Greptile retrigger is
requested for this rebase, per reviewer direction.
- The prior PR head and master hit the same GitHub runner encoding crash
in workspace-b on three PR attempts, including diagnostic logging
([prior PR
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38818474563/job/116714538405),
[prior master
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38819528748/job/116712423193)).
Rebased onto `origin/master` at `c3ffa3f0dd` to pull in its bridge-test
index correction. The rebased head
`edd153db410bea063b645e0000aa68649f287b00` passes all CI checks ([CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38824676914)),
including workspace-b. Greptile's automatic standard review is 5/5 on
this exact head, with no unresolved threads; no manual review was
requested.
- Local workspace-b investigation passed 911 shared tests and 3,868
tests across the remaining 15 workspace projects. The catalog run
separately hit an existing ignored
`.agents/skills/design-guide/SKILL.md` description-budget violation in
this checkout; that file is untracked, outside the PR, and left
untouched. Repeating shared tests with CI reporting enabled also passed.
- Rebase verification: the final Git tree exactly matches the previously
reviewed branch combined with current master. All 192 Runner
admission/contract tests, 61 server preparation/provider tests, and 68
bridge tests pass, as do Runner/server TypeScript and generated-profile
checks. The real Claude adapter fixture hit an `ENOTEMPTY` cleanup race
on its initial run; all 89 adapter tests passed on retry.
- Apex on rebased head `edd153db` returned 2/5: ACPX Codex selected full
access without enforcing Runner-state denial, and agent configuration
replacement could remove the operator mode. Both are fixed in
`26e14dbbf`. Preconfigured ACPX Codex is temporarily unqualified;
re-enabling it requires session permission enforcement on thread/turn
operations and a real filesystem-denial probe. The config guard covers
effective replacements, adapter changes, and rollback while allowing
ordinary agent merges and operator removal. All 190 focused Runner
tests, 103 server tests, both typechecks, and generated-profile checks
pass. Standard review and CI passed before the next Apex request.
- CI on `26e14dbbf` passed 1,967 Runner-shard tests but hit the
previously observed `ENOTEMPTY` fixture cleanup race after successful
Claude model admission. `eb83284fb` adds bounded filesystem retries to
that fixture's teardown; all 87 adapter tests pass. Assertions and
production cleanup behavior are unchanged. Head
`eb83284fb42ee19a15d9a93b106c1bbb07e1695e` passes all 59 CI checks ([CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38829500857))
and standard Greptile at 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Apex also
completed at **5/5** on that exact head ([Apex
result](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/16486#issuecomment-6201559527)).
All review threads are resolved, the branch has no merge conflicts, and
the PR remains unmerged.
- No live paid-provider or remote-machine smoke was performed. The
lockfile remains unchanged under the repository's refresh-bot policy;
local dependency installation resolved the changed patch hash.

## Risks

This explicit opt-in grants Codex tools access to the execution home
(read-only in planning), including credentials. Native Codex separately
denies Runner-owned protocol state. ACPX Claude retains its existing
provider trust boundary, and the isolated default is unchanged.
Providers may refresh credentials and update their own metadata.

User configuration can block tools or the completion reporter. Existing
blocked results and failure diagnostics remain the recovery path. Edit
the local settings and retry; no new approval workflow is added.

External provider history remains on the execution machine and is not
backed up by Runner. Remote HOME discovery requires `getent` and fails
explicitly when unavailable. Other harnesses need separate
qualification.

The Codex ACP bundle digest changes. Existing sessions tied to the old
bundle may need a fresh session. No database migration is required.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6, with reasoning and code execution. The exact
runtime model ID was not exposed.

DottaandPaperclip 57e977be72 feat: integrate Pi 1.0 into the experimental Runner (#14921)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work.
> - The experimental Runner owns provider processes and durable
sessions.
> - Pi needs working task execution and human controls.
> - The five-PR stack must preserve changes already on master.
> - Each layer now carries the complete integrated source for a safe
sequential fallback.
> - This PR belongs to native GitHub stack #15602, ending at #14956.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #14436, #14631, #14743 and #14956.

Ship Pi 1.0 through the experimental Paperclip Runner. The five PRs are
#14921, #14922, #14923, #14924 and #14956. The user authorized the
complete merge after checks pass. Existing `pi_local` execution is
unchanged. Accounting and wider provider/platform qualification remain
deferred.

## What Changed

- Recover missing final replies after workspace finalization changes
owners, using accepted-turn evidence without rerunning work or granting
external-chat publication.
- Preserve the admitted Pi instruction root across warm runs, while
retaining changed-root rejection.
- Give Pi a bounded 15-second default shutdown grace so stop, drain
acknowledgement and durable suspension can complete. Explicit deadlines
and other providers retain their existing behavior.
- Integrate the Pi 1.0 runtime and master contracts.
- Use Pi profile 22. Preserve explicit caller-selected models and exact
native thinking levels. Keep Pi's wrapper, helper, extension and
question/control behavior unchanged from the qualified profile-19
runtime.
- Preserve master's Dot lifecycle and consent fields, configured task
environment, status guards and current Codex/Claude dependency versions.
Cursor stays qualified. Copilot stays pending; profile 17 binds the
changed shared protocol validation sources.
- Exclude general AWS IAM credentials from Pi static/custom provider
bindings and selected task projections; preserve the provider-scoped
Bedrock bearer key. Profile 21 is retained as historical provenance.
Rust and cloud install probes use the current declaration.
- Patch bundled brace-expansion 5.0.9 to the exact official 5.0.12
payload. Pin the patch and complete runtime closures. Include the patch
in normal installed setup tooling. Keep the upstream Pi shrinkwrap as
provenance and permit only this exact security correction.
- Include current attestation files in the Docker build context. Keep
the repository lockfile unchanged from master. CI and private image
builds resolve manifest changes before their frozen installation.

## Verification

- Full local `pnpm -r typecheck` passes, including Runner Rust, server
and UI. Focused integration checks pass: 194 Runner
admission/environment tests, 63 profile/credential tests with one
expected skip, 152 Dot/UI configuration tests, and Pi transcript/notice
tests.
- Full local `pnpm build` passes on the final source.
- Fresh final-source checks pass: all 698 Rust workspace tests (32
binaries), 156 credential/profile/controller tests with one expected
skip, Runner TypeScript typecheck, and 20 package/setup/sandbox tests.
- The profile-21 Pi materializer passes on the native host with the
official pinned Node 24.21.0 and its npm. It verifies all 150 locked
packages, the patched dependency and the exact closure. Setup/package
bundle tests and UI token gates pass.
- The old hashes were reproduced for all three supported targets before
calculating the patched graph. New closure hashes are darwin-arm64
`282022db10150c6632b3444df421342e7d534bdf5d5fb1097a2e79d0625a2bcf`,

`713b1fdff42fb56a1518bdc084f181d70bee8ebadc3e4b1d76321ed9108c8410`.
Independent native platform execution is separate from graph identity
reproduction.
- Historical cloud qualification remains unchanged: all seven core cases
pass on shipping source `10dc43c9ec65d88c2f782d62afb296d09494f215`,
harness `1a4408a48cfb5a1f094a311141c257c92cd7a893`, image

and accepted Sonnet 4.6/low fixture. All 215 canonical files and all
seven cleanup checks pass independent verification. These are profile-19
results and are not relabeled as fresh profile-22 runs.
- Current Pi digest:

[The readiness
plan](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/codex/pi-production-readiness/doc/plans/2026-10-02-pi-production-readiness.md)
preserves campaign and failed-attempt provenance.
- Merge only after every PR's current-head CI and fresh review pass.
Linux CI covers the full suites, build and browser tests. The local
embedded Postgres API-authority suite cannot start on this macOS/Node 26
host, so Linux CI must confirm that suite.

### Fresh profile-22 core qualification — 2026-10-08

All seven accepted core cases pass canonically on Pi profile 22, with
`openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6` and native-confirmed low
thinking. This model is a fixture; production accepts the caller's
explicit Pi provider/model.

Runtime/install source: `3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401`.
Frozen accepted harness: `1a4408a48cfb5a1f094a311141c257c92cd7a893`.

[Hosted Linux image and clean-install
verification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868328023)
passes, including all 20 source-bound archives, normal CLI/Pi setup,
companion import and the production pack reader. This exact installation
source includes the latest master integration and the corrected Pi warm
instruction-root fence. Full local typecheck/build and current-head
hosted CI verify the final stack. All 13 focused real-root regressions
pass. The full local executor suite passed 662 tests; 15 database tests
could not start the Mac embedded PostgreSQL service. Hosted Linux CI
passes the full required verification and E2E checks. These fresh
results keep their own source identity; profile-19 results remain
historical.

All 215 canonical files (28714587 bytes) are independently
hash-verified. All seven cleanup grades pass, with no owned runtime
process or temporary root after each case. Automatic retries are zero.
The owned cloud host stopped normally after retention. The prior
profile-22 warm attempt remains failed and separately retained: archive
SHA-256
`1e54eba5ec72b50cee1534b23d1d1d4f21a090006b8a64501ba70db972abfde5`. Its
original canonical classification is preserved. Diagnosis reproduced a
product bug comparing an agent-files root against an unset
checkpoint-only field. The fix stores the admitted physical root
separately from the adopted per-run collection capability. The real-root
regression fails before the fix and passes afterward, including
rejection of a changed physical root. Fixture, grader, model and all
seven accepted case IDs are unchanged; this fresh campaign tests
final-reply publication after file registration first. The intermediate
restart attempt also remains failed and retained: archive SHA-256
`5dcaefdf1d17cf4cd54fd4cf810f45e736667392339b8ce7caf08bb4e225277f`. Its
original canonical classification is preserved. Pi resumed, wrote the
verified answer and completed its task; exact runner suspension was
proven, but idle stop consumed about 5.2s and left under 3s for the
drain acknowledgement. The Pi-only default shutdown grace is now 15s,
preserving a full 5s drain round trip and a finite suspension reserve.
Explicit caller deadlines, other provider defaults, literal drain
receipts and exact suspension identity checks remain unchanged. The
timing regression fails before this correction and passes afterward; all
18 focused settlement tests and Runner typecheck pass. The final-source
file attempt is also preserved as failed (`candidate_failure`), archive
SHA-256
`db6767b6773ea618997927ac77bdb005a5ac81492c7b9c0ffbc900449f829bc9`.
Native edit, validation, exact downloadable artifact and Done/succeeded
all passed, and the exact final reply was durably recorded. A workspace
recovery owner completed before the live heartbeat reached presentation,
leaving that reply absent from task chat. Recovery now materializes only
a completed final reply from the accepted turn of an ordinary internal
Done task, preserving issue/run/contract binding, suppression,
external-chat authorization and same-run deduplication. The database
regression covers the generated file-preparation receipt, suppression,
unapproved external continuation and replay. Server typecheck and all 49
response-selection tests pass; hosted Linux verifies the database
regression because embedded PostgreSQL cannot start on this Mac.

The delayed-final-answer database regression passes on [the final
root-source Linux server
shard](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868262553/job/113628594152),
alongside 1,108 passing tests. The first root Runner shard had one
unchanged durable-resume test exceed its 5-second timeout; the identical
top-source shard and the isolated exact test passed. One rerun of that
failed job and its required aggregate passed without source or test
changes. The original failed job log and the single-rerun receipt remain
retained.

### October 9 merge verification

Current merge head: `5a8fe63512a7166aaef5cf50065a25008aa8b44b`. All
current-head checks pass, including `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`;
exact-head Greptile review is 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Current
master conflicts are resolved. The user authorized the maintainer
override of the code-owner review gate after these checks. The seven
retained live core cases remain bound to source
`3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401` and its recorded cloud image.

## Risks

- The security correction changes the dependency closure and profile
identity. Old sessions must reopen on the new profile. Exact identities
and credential bindings fail closed.
- The runner remains experimental and requires explicit selection.
Legacy Pi Local is unchanged. Caller model IDs pass through; the E2E
model is a fixture.
- Accounting and the broad platform/provider matrix remain deferred.
This merge does not publish a release or deploy a service.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex assisted with reasoning, repository
inspection, editing and tool use. The exact serving ID and context
window are not exposed in this session. Final live qualification uses Pi
1.0.0 with `openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6` and native-confirmed
low thinking.

DottaandPaperclip a6306ba606 feat(runner): consolidate Cursor production integration (#15075)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The native Runner keeps provider sessions under company authority,
approvals, budgets and durable recovery.
> - Cursor work was spread across candidate branches. The published
branch lacked later plan, permission and cleanup fixes.
> - Production also needs public installation and matching runtime
assets for local and Daytona execution.
> - This pull request consolidates Cursor onto current mainline recovery
behavior and completes that installation path.
> - The installed v11 release passed focused local and Daytona
qualification after the generic mode and lifecycle cleanup. The later
model-selection correction and current mainline merge produce v14
artifacts that need matching release qualification.
> - Cursor admission is enabled in source; publish only an artifact
combination with matching qualification. Native AskQuestion and complete
per-run dollar accounting remain excluded.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs: #14435, #14631, #14669, #14699, #14724.

This completes the Cursor implementation by @cryppadotta from combined
source `22c78242a4e0c2369fecf0c2dc4e7600fbad6706`. It preserves newer
mainline recovery, completion and warm-directory behavior. Pi and
Copilot remain gated.

## What Changed

- Generate named Rust and TypeScript ACPX release profiles from one
manifest. Share runtime pins with packaging and server verification.
Preserve vendor runtime versions; bind the updated ACPX patch to Cursor
profile v14 and reject stale generated declarations at build/typecheck.
- Remove ACPX model allowlists, including the former Codex and Pi
restrictions and the duplicate developer test-drive gate. Send any
explicit model ID unchanged to its provider and verify the effective
selection before prompting. The bundled ACPX package forwards unlisted
IDs, rejects mismatched acknowledgements, and restores the exact
selection after session load. It does not expand Cursor model aliases.
Provider rejection, mismatch, or missing model controls fails without a
fallback. Model examples live in evaluation fixtures, outside runtime
declarations.

- Add pinned Cursor execution, contained instructions, exact model
verification and Agent/Plan/Ask modes.
- Carry an opaque generic `mode` identifier in shared native execution,
sidecar, Rust and recovery contracts. The provider adapter owns
supported modes, defaults, native translation and acknowledgement.
- Keep native RPC recognition, accepted-plan interpretation and
permission evidence behind provider adapters. Shared settlement and
recovery verify normalized facts and their committed evidence.
- Replace the Cursor-only warm-attachment branch with a runner-owned
capability. Only Cursor opts into it. Move profile compatibility and
optional usage parsing into provider metadata and adapters.
- Write generic plan-wait receipts. Read exact historical Cursor
receipts through a separate compatibility decoder. Reject mixed formats
and preserve existing authority checks.
- Carry native plans, semantic questions, todos, child activity,
permission identities and partial usage diagnostics through the Runner.
- Preserve durable response delivery, cancellation, warm ownership and
process retirement.
- Finish accepted planning runs successfully. Keep their tasks open for
explicit direction. Acceptance does not start implementation.
- Ship `paperclipai runtime setup cursor` and its provisioner through
the public package. npm installation does not download Cursor. Setup
uses the OS account's closure-keyed cache so system-wide npm packages
can remain read-only. Run it as the Paperclip service account.
- Include Cursor in normal provider packs and Daytona images for macOS
ARM64/x64 and Linux x64.
- Reject stale release packs by source revision and current ACPX/Cursor
pins before assembly writes files. Verify current Cursor
version/profile/closure again at runtime.
- Ship all three daemon targets and the expected Linux image-pack
identity. A macOS controller uses its packaged Linux daemon for Daytona.
Image mismatches fail before provider launch.
- Use the vendored Runner boundary for installed readiness probes.
Verify the actual installed Cursor probe.
- Verify compiled public Daytona plugins and their release versions in
installed smokes.
- Record exact artifacts, the acceptance matrix, retained failures,
supported capabilities and rollback behavior in the [readiness
report](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/codex/cursor-production-readiness/doc/plans/2026-10-03-cursor-production-readiness.md).

## Verification

- Current head `f7ec5cc1f0e30c62a829c016ff2013a2a9d79037` merges
mainline `faa8e452c73bae5e044dd6379179a00106abb131`. It keeps Cursor
plan and cancellation guards alongside mainline historical-question
filtering. The evaluation catalog includes both Cursor and expanded
adapter accounting cases (683 total). Recursive typecheck, full build,
696 lifecycle/recovery tests, 45 fixture tests and fixture typecheck
passed. Current-head CI passed: 56 successful checks, one neutral and
four skipped. [Complete
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37557996535).
The fresh Base Greptile review is 5/5 on this exact head, with 304 files
reviewed, zero new comments and zero unresolved threads. The user
authorized overriding the CODEOWNER review gate after checks passed; no
failing checks are overridden. Prior results below retain their own head
identities.
- Corrective head `3d2b168366258036f6b6a6fccb382c49138cc601` fixes the
post-merge Apex finding. Automatic-review and new-evidence
reconciliation preserve pending child results and recheck delivery under
the status lock before completing. Account repair now excludes unrelated
secret consumers and requires the failed agent's identity. Regression
coverage includes the commit race, delivery statuses,
current-run/current-intent exclusions, repeated reconciliation, both
database reconciliation paths, and credential consumer boundaries. All
184 affected tests, server typecheck and server build passed.
Current-head Base Greptile review is 5/5, with 304 files reviewed, zero
new comments and zero unresolved threads. Current-head CI passed: 56
successful checks, one neutral and four skipped. [Complete
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37535994724).
This Base review is distinct from the earlier Apex review.
- Merge head `5957c257a` reconciles mainline `b508a05c4`. It preserves
both accepted-plan waits and pending-child-completion checks, current
provider selectors, task-creation response identities, and mainline ACPX
missing-file handling. The combined patch is bound to Cursor profile
v14; historical records keep their original identities.
- Merge head `5957c257a` passed recursive typecheck, full build, 43
installed ACPX/package contracts, 107 provider UI and plan/recovery
tests, 593 database-backed lifecycle tests, 49 profile/native contract
tests, 45 Product E2E fixture tests, fixture typecheck, token gates,
three provider-free browser task-creation cases, and Runner
conformance/replay checks. Its complete CI passed (55 successful checks,
one neutral and four skipped), while Apex returned 2/5 with a
child-delivery finding addressed below.
- The local full-suite attempt again failed the unchanged Git streaming
test (360-second timeout) and was stopped. The concurrent local Rust
attempt failed four unchanged Codex process/deadline tests; all four
passed serially without code changes in 7.29 seconds after removing the
competing test load. These failed commands are retained and are not
reported as full-suite passes; the fresh Linux CI runs are tracked
separately.
- The previous head `907bdb2a2778c7ffeb4a662a91460c9d1ddfc9c5` earned
Apex 5/5 with zero comments after fixing all three findings: per-user
install cache, stale release-pack rejection, and public Linux smoke
account/home handling. Its real built installer passed from read-only
public packages on macOS ARM64 and Linux x64. All 137 release-registry
checks and 64 ACPX package contracts passed. That review does not cover
this mainline reconciliation.
- Prior `beadd3654` passed the full CI matrix; its one unchanged chat
test failure and successful single retry remain in the [CI
history](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37521449327).
Historical results below remain attributed to their original builds.

- Fixture follow-up `dd59d7e82b103a88b7cbd7d2c38b612c0fbbff7a` removes
provider-specific model choices from generic offline ACPX tests. The
fake sidecar preserves the model and session identity selected at open
through suspension. Affected verification passed: 106 Rust tests and 73
TypeScript tests. This commit changes test code only; the
production-code checks below retain their recorded identities. Its CI
and Greptile review later passed; those results belong to that
historical head.
- Model-selection cleanup `9a070808b48960a41fdfd369ae0636b95af82459`:
252 focused Runner tests passed (six platform skips), covering all six
ACPX agents, native model acknowledgement, rejected selections,
installation integrity and recovery identity. The merged branch passed
recursive typecheck, full build, token gates, server admission (19
tests), and the Product E2E catalog (45 tests). The acceptance catalog
passed all four tests. The full Rust suite passed: 643 tests, 2 ignored.
It verifies sidecar acknowledgement of unlisted models and rejection of
model mismatches. The final commits only update Rust tests; production
sources match the verified build at
`65ec3279ac50185e3cda109b5cfd9b4f56105de0`. No new paid provider calls
were made.
- The merge preserves both Cursor and the new mainline public-MCP
fixture cases. Auto-merge remains disabled; the latest follow-up status
is recorded above. The local `pnpm test:run` attempt hit the unchanged
Git streaming test's 300-second timeout and was interrupted before
merging mainline. The broad Runner attempt found obsolete single-model
assertions plus three macOS fixture-path failures caused by a
`/private/tmp` override. The assertions are corrected; affected
TypeScript checks passed with the standard macOS temporary directory,
and the complete Rust suite passed. Neither interrupted command is a
full-suite pass.
- Earlier declaration-cleanup head `6f4a5e9e2` passed recursive
typecheck, build, Rust and focused tests. Its CI later exposed a test
expecting duplicated Grok digest literals. The current source fixes that
assertion to compare launcher bytes with the shared manifest. Historical
successes and failed attempts are retained; no new live provider
qualification is claimed.
- Previous head `e75fde6098b0ddd8cec765bfb6ecaeecb88a26a6` passed
complete CI (56 successful checks, one neutral, four skipped) and
Greptile 5/5. [Historical complete
CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37489112305).
Those results are not claimed for the cleanup head.
- Frozen live application: `d7b696f9b8f79095233e9e3d56d23e6a6018dd48`.
Public package version: `0.0.0-cursor-verify.3d0c9b7761c6`. The
declaration cleanup preserves release pins and does not relabel that
tested artifact as a build of the new source. Mainline through
`e34abee670` was reconciled while preserving accepted-plan waits,
provider-capacity handling, and both Cursor and public-MCP fixtures.
- Clean normal installation, explicit Cursor setup and daemon resolution
passed on macOS ARM64, macOS x64 under Rosetta, and Linux x64. npm
lifecycle hooks ran without silently downloading Cursor.
- Historical v11 live matrix: **18/18 passed with cleanup** (nine local,
nine Daytona) after the generic mode and lifecycle cleanup. The campaign
has 23 attempts; all five failures and their diagnoses remain recorded.
Exact case identities, hashes and limits are in the readiness report.
All provider calls are real, use the explicit Luna model and
company-bound credentials, and run without qualification or
runtime-asset overrides.
- The immutable Daytona image is
`ghcr.io/paperclipai/paperclip-daytona-runner@sha256:d6259b6bba094702c13fc2283bd85550849c1c53145b656fb2746778f9fa1747`.
The public Daytona plugin is installed independently and its version is
checked.
- Recursive typecheck, full build, token gates and Runner
contract/conformance/replay checks passed on the frozen application. Its
complete Linux CI suite passed. The duplicate local full-suite command
was incomplete after timing failures; affected repeats passed, but that
command is not reported as a clean pass.
- Qualification fixtures passed typecheck, 1,675 Vitest tests (one
skip), 128 Node checks, three provider-free browser tests, and 150
focused lifecycle tests after the final diagnostic correction. The
affected legacy Cursor command file also passed all five tests after
removing its shorter 10-second override; it now inherits the suite’s
standard 15-second timeout. Greptile is 5/5 on `e75fde609` with no
unresolved review threads. CI results above are recorded separately from
historical build results.

## Risks

- Cursor v14 includes the updated ACPX dependency patch and release
identity. The v11 live matrix and image below remain historical
evidence. They do not certify new v14 package/image artifacts.

- ACPX accepts models beyond the qualification fixtures. Availability
and entitlement depend on the provider. Successful configuration is not
a claim of live qualification for every model.
- Shared mode is an opaque identifier. Provider adapters own its
meaning. Incompatible historical sessions remain fenced; exact committed
plan waits and task history remain inspectable.
- Native AskQuestion is excluded. Paperclip semantic questions are
supported. Authoritative per-run dollar accounting is unavailable;
partial counters remain diagnostics and unknown cost is not zero.
- Image input, detailed native diffs, deeper child transcripts and
native plan-file export remain follow-ups.
- macOS x64 has clean-install and daemon-startup proof under Rosetta,
not a separate live campaign on Intel hardware.
- Release only the tested package/image combination. Merging this PR
does not publish npm packages or deploy that image. Later builds need
their own release verification. Rollback disables new Cursor admission
while preserving records and recovery inspection.
- A model can fail an exact instruction: one cancelled-plan attempt
returned the wrong summary marker despite correct cancellation. The
unchanged repeat passed; both results remain in the report.

> ROADMAP.md was checked. This completes existing native Runner/Cursor
work; it does not add an independent core feature proposal.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6. The exact serving variant and context window are
not exposed in this session. The agent used reasoning, repository
inspection, code execution, protocol tests and browser-backed Product
E2E tools. Cursor acceptance uses the explicit
`gpt-5.6-luna[context=272k,reasoning=medium,fast=false]` model. That is
the evaluated provider model.

DottaandPaperclip f1a394bd30 feat(runner): add Grok Build through native ACP (#13882)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents and governs their work.
> - Its native runner uses structured provider protocols for sessions
and tools.
> - Grok Build supports ACP over stdio, but the runner did not expose
it.
> - Native execution requires company-scoped credentials, verified
identities, and permission gates.
> - This change adds Grok through ACPX for local and Daytona execution.
> - Subscription login and explicit API-key execution have separate
credential paths.
> - Qualification grades real tool outcomes, durable state, and browser
workflows.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #13845, #13847, #13850, #13878, #13901, #13973, #13977, #13979.

Add **Grok Build** to `paperclip_runner` with `provider: "acpx"`,
`acpxAgent: "grok"`, and model `grok-4.7`. Existing legacy Grok agents
keep their adapter. Merge the three companion fixes (#13973, #13977,
#13979) before treating the integrated Product qualification as deployed
behavior.

## What Changed

- Synchronize shared, TypeScript, Rust, server, validation, and UI
provider contracts.
- Run Grok native ACP stdio through ACPX and the authenticated Paperclip
MCP bridge. Verify the pinned executable and exact ACP model identity.
- Prefer company subscription login. Support an explicit company-secret
API key without automatic paid fallback. Fence refresh and copyback to
the same account and remove private runtime credentials after
containment.
- Preserve selected permissions, cancellation, durable session identity,
resume, and restart recovery. Keep unsupported steering and goals
unavailable. Preserve missing usage and cost as unknown.
- Package checksum-verified Grok Build 1.0.13 for Daytona with an
immutable, signed image built on EC2.
- Add deterministic admission, protocol, permissions, identity,
credential, failure, and cleanup checks. Add the maintained 39-case
protocol roster and separate subscription/API Product profiles.
- Fix live-test findings in reasoning events, reloads, idle-owner
retirement, credential-home cleanup, expired-login model discovery,
launcher pinning, and rerun evidence selection.
- Align control-plane state readers with the transport's 64 MiB bound
while retaining identity, ownership, lifecycle, and size rejection
checks.
- Stabilize two asynchronous CI assertions while retaining actual
outcome and filesystem-evidence checks.

## Verification

Current integration head `f114948376056fe0b6b34c1496ae8667b59daa63`
includes master `3447609d2247e75e55d91493dda91a608364f672` (2026-09-28).
Two master advances during verification overlapped the eval catalog; the
final merge preserves Grok qualification, completion updates, and
bounded API-response reading in all 348 cells. All 77 focused
catalog/eval/workflow tests pass. Both native stack layers (#14397) are
mergeable, and both exact-head Greptile reviews are 5/5 with successful
security scans and no unresolved review threads. All current-head CI is
green: 56 successful checks/statuses and four intentional skips ([CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/36447097232)).
Trunk code-owner requirements remain enforced. The review summary’s
non-blocking saved-asset offset classification note concerns code
already merged in #14301; those runtime files are identical to master
and outside this stack’s diff. Historical live evidence below retains
its original source revisions.

Earlier integration checkpoint:
`24fc9b94ca0afb21ccdc8d26dbb2e4b258ad72cb`. Refreshed against master
`0f14d2612`, preserving Grok qualification alongside the new accounting
and lifecycle suites. All 124 focused catalog, evidence, and
service-worker checks pass. The current base workflow includes the
explicitly selected public-install verification lane; follow-up #14024
supplies its verifier script. CI at that earlier checkpoint was green
(56 successful checks/statuses, four intentional skips), and the review
is 5/5 with no unresolved findings. Prior feature CI at
`fd73f0a9b1ecdf4094685054028df71739ddc3e1` passed ([run
36148259902](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/36148259902));
that is historical evidence, not a current-head result.

Paid Product measurements use frozen integrated source
`2d939a92b21dcaf5c77c88b54d96784d2ddd0699`, which combines the feature
with #13973, #13977, and #13979. That source passed all 52 CI checks and
clean 5/5 review. Later master syncs incorporate upstream changes. Their
checks remain separate from these pinned live measurements.

each passed 6/6. Total: 28 unique subscription attempts at `2d939a92`. |
| API smoke and question continuation | [4/4 first attempts; cleanup

and 18/18 core repetitions at `4a1061c8`; retained as measurements of
that revision |
| Native Daytona proof | Three subscription and three API
MCP/permissions/resume runs passed at `bc6833f7`. Three expired-login
admission and fenced refresh checks passed without inference. All test
sandboxes were removed. |
| Inspectable artifacts and UI | Current-source screenshots verify
planning approval, direct Ask completion, question continuation after
controller restart, and two downloadable project revisions. The project
downloads pass 12 and 18 tests; all 40 independent artifact oracle
checks pass. |
| Provider-free checks | 116 eval-validator tests, 39 Grok definitions,
and 359 enabled/external campaign cells pass. Continuation regressions
above 2 MiB and 16 MiB failed before their fixes; 32 focused
recovery/ownership/size checks pass. |

The 32 unique current-source Product attempts have no failures, retries,
or skipped cells, and all cleanup checks pass. Whole-workflow timing,
model identity, image and provider-pack provenance, attempts, and
accounting coverage are retained in the canonical reports. The report
publisher's conservative `complete=false` flag is preserved; independent
audits verify the exact selected source catalog and immutable result
rows.

They retain their original grades. No Docker or Rust builds ran on the
developer laptop for these follow-ups.

## Risks

Merge packaging follow-up #14024 with this base before public release.
The follow-up replaces the private Grok bridge package with a built-in
launcher and makes the native binary an explicit sandbox prerequisite.

Three separate, reviewed fixes are part of the tested integrated
behavior: #13973 serializes task-run admission; #13977 captures complete
event evidence; #13979 durably reconciles failed Daytona creation. Each
has green CI and clean 5/5 review. Failed-create recovery has 277 plugin
tests, 92 SDK tests, host-runtime recovery tests, and a real Daytona
lost-deletion-receipt proof. The live proof uses a private file for
journal persistence; database durability is covered by host tests.
Worker death before delivery of a failure envelope remains outside that
recovery mechanism.

Subscription fixtures stage an authorized company login; interactive
browser sign-in is not qualified. Local Product profiles ran on EC2
Linux. The temporary subscription credential was removed from the
protected GitHub environment after all subscription audits, with absence
verified. Runtime homes and refresh copyback remain ownership-fenced.

Protocol results remain pinned to their original revisions; they are not
relabeled as tests of the latest feature commit. New binary/model
versions require qualification. Missing token usage and model cost
remain unknown; runtime estimates do not establish a full bill.
Automatic paid Grok scheduling remains disabled pending separate
reviewed enablement. The 64 MiB bound can increase memory use for
verbose sessions, and larger files still fail closed. No automatic
legacy-agent migration occurs.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with tool use and code execution. The exact
serving model identifier and context-window size are not exposed in this
session.

DottaandPaperclip 7bc03e0acd feat(runner): default harnesses to full auto and support task reassignment (#13686)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip lets people manage AI agents and their work.
> - Agent Chat uses native runners to save plans and coordinate tasks.
> - Provider defaults differed across harnesses and could stop
unattended work at a second permission gate.
> - Agents also lacked a dedicated tool to move existing work to another
agent safely.
> - This change defaults native providers to full automatic permission
for provider tools and connected tools.
> - A guarded reassignment tool preserves task identity, stops the
previous run, and schedules the new owner once.
> - Codex and Claude chat acceptance tests now use production permission
defaults.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Native runner, ACPX Claude permission policy, task authority, and Agent
Chat acceptance tests.

**Problem or motivation**

A user can authorize an agent to save a plan or create a task, but
Claude's default provider gate can still stop that action. Reassignment
needs a dedicated operation that preserves context and avoids concurrent
owners or unintended recovery runs.

**Proposed solution**

Default Claude/ACPX to `approve-all`, OpenCode to `allow`, and Codex to
`never`. Apply the defaults at configuration, execution, fresh-session,
resume, driver, and proxy boundaries. Keep explicit permission settings
and server-side company, claim, task-mode, and approval checks. Add
`reassign_task` with version checks, durable idempotency, audited
cancellation, and guarded successor scheduling.

**Alternatives considered**

A Paperclip-only allowlist still blocks provider tools and other
connections during unattended work. Full automatic permission is the
requested product default. Recreating a task discards its identity and
history. Updating assignment without stopping the previous run can leave
two agents working on the same task.

**Roadmap alignment**

This extends the existing planning, delegated work, governed tool
access, and recovery features. It adds no new service or schema
migration. Recent related tasks and open PRs were checked for duplicate
work.

**Additional context**

Related: #13678 (Agent Chat tools and recovery), #13677 (remote runner
startup). The stacked legacy-adapter companion is #13693. This also
fixes the deployed-server artifact fallback needed to stage the current
runner binary.

## What Changed

- Default Claude/ACPX to `approve-all`, OpenCode to `allow`, and Codex
to `never`, including missing settings at direct driver and proxy entry
points. These defaults cover provider tools and connected tools.
Preserve explicitly configured restrictive modes.
- Include assigned approval reads using canonical side-effect
classifications, so verifying a recorded approval does not trigger
another provider gate. Paperclip approval decisions still enforce
controller authority.
- Carry the new permission mode through server configuration, execution
contracts, recovery identity, TypeScript, and Rust. Keep
`approve-paperclip` as an optional restricted mode, with exact SDK rules
and closed unknown requests. It is not a default.
- Add `reassign_task` to the semantic catalog, controller, mock
authority, and generated contracts.
- Guard reassignment with company authorization, expected owner and
version, protected-state checks, and durable retry receipts.
- Honor explicit backlog task creation atomically with the initial plan,
without scheduling a wake. Preserve backlog holds regardless of
dependency readiness.
- Stop active work before changing ownership. Restore the prior owner
through a guarded, idempotent wake if final handoff validation fails.
Keep intentional reassignment stops out of failure recovery. Preserve
backlog and blocked states without waking them early.
- Add authorization, concurrency, replay, stop, and permission boundary
regressions. Add Codex and Claude chat reassignment cases and run native
chat cases with production defaults.
- Clarify shared runner guidance: save plans and Paperclip documents
directly with `write_document`; create and register a local file only
when a downloadable file is requested.
- Document provider defaults and the operator choices for existing
agents.

## Verification

- Current head `d82fbb0f03546d27cecf072250e4172e0b1ee662`: **55 checks
passed**, with two intentional skips. [PR
checks](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13686/checks).
- Greptile reviewed that exact head at **5/5**. The security reviewer
acknowledged the intended full-auto default, and the acknowledged
discussions are resolved.
- Full workspace `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed locally
after rebasing onto current master. Targeted adapter/server, runner,
API, default/resume, and heartbeat configuration tests passed.
- **All six real-provider acceptance cases passed on their first
attempt, with cleanup passing:** plan handoff, task reassignment, and
backlog creation/status, each on native Claude and Codex. Evidence
records Claude's effective `approve-all` mode. [Campaign and
downloadable
evidence](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/35469926548).
- The live campaign tested combined revision
`a37881c824dcd7170380fc4b788732fc743e5da7`. The final PR heads add only
a heartbeat test expectation correction; application code is unchanged
from that live-tested revision.
- The campaign's result-enforcement job passed. Its separate report
publisher failed because the trusted workflow's `patchedDependencies`
configuration differs from its frozen lockfile. All six results and
screenshots remain available as GitHub artifacts. The overall manual
workflow is red for this publishing failure.
- Full-suite coverage is supplied by the passing CI partitions. The
separate unsharded local run was stopped after the corresponding CI
partitions passed; it is not counted as a completed local run.
- Reassignment tests cover stale state, cross-company access, denied
authority, cancellation failure, compensating wake, and idempotent
retries. Backlog tests verify the original creation audit, saved plan,
exact task count, and absence of task-bound runs.

## Risks

- Agents with no explicit permission mode now receive full provider tool
permission, including connected tools. This is a deliberate broad
default. Existing explicit restrictive modes still apply. Controller
authorization, company isolation, workspace boundaries, and Paperclip
governance remain in force.
- Reassignment crosses run cancellation and task ownership transactions.
Durable stop intent, revalidation, audit receipts, and guarded queue
dispatch cover interruptions and retries.
- The new permission enum requires a current runner artifact. The remote
artifact fallback uses the same resolved controller binary for upload
and execution.
- Live provider behavior remains subject to the selected model. Targeted
live results do not qualify the full catalog.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with code execution and repository tools.
The exact deployment model ID and context-window size are not exposed in
this session.

DottaandPaperclip 78ce96a48b fix(runner): restore native Claude context and read permissions (#13422)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The native runner supplies each agent with instructions, assigned
skills, and tools.
> - Native Claude lost its skill snapshot before provider launch. It
also changed exact model IDs to aliases.
> - The read permission mode denied ordinary Paperclip reads because
this runner has no interactive approval handler.
> - This pull request restores the missing context and permits only
assigned tools that Paperclip defines as reads.
> - Other requests that need approval stop with a clear action for the
operator. They do not retry automatically.
> - Agents can complete read tasks. Users can see why a restricted task
stopped.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Native Claude could not find assigned skills. The ACP layer could
replace an exact model ID with an alias and then fail identity
verification. The default `approve-reads` mode denied Paperclip read
tools. A denied write showed a generic transport failure.

The tool descriptions also called live operations “mock” operations. The
completion prompt said to call a completion tool once, although the
protocol can reject a claim and require a corrected call.

**Expected behavior**

Load assigned skills before launch. Keep the selected model ID. Allow
assigned Paperclip reads. Stop an operation that needs approval with
clear instructions when no approval handler exists.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Configure a native Paperclip Runner agent with ACPX Claude and an
exact model ID.
2. Assign a skill and ask the agent to use it.
3. Select the read permission mode and ask the agent to read task
context and list documents.
4. Ask the agent to write a document. Check the task state and recovery
message.

**Paperclip version or commit**

Reproduced from `d351e08deee1b49d3467a950d1a3f01131943441`.

**Deployment mode**

Local native runner with real Claude, Rust runnerd, the Paperclip
server, and embedded PostgreSQL.

Related: #13196 fixed remote skill staging in the legacy `claude_local`
adapter. The native runner uses a separate path, which this pull request
fixes.

## What Changed

- Carry the runtime context through Rust and the ACPX sidecar. Load
assigned Claude skills after the provider lifetime lease is held.
Refresh the files on each open.
- Write the exact requested model ID into the isolated Claude settings.
- Grant exact MCP permissions for the intersection of assigned tools and
Paperclip's read catalog. Provider hints cannot grant access. Existing
task-control permissions stay in place.
- Stop requests that need an unavailable approval handler. Preserve the
typed error through the server. Show “Approval required” on the task and
require operator action without automatic retry.
- Label the setting “Allow Paperclip reads.” Remove “mock” from live
tool descriptions and regenerate the contracts.
- Change one completion-prompt sentence to require one accepted result.
Add regression tests and update the runner documentation.

## Verification

- Red/green regression tests cover read admission, unavailable approval
handling, server recovery, and the task error message.
- A real Claude read trial failed before the fix and completed after it:
[red

- Full browser tests used real Claude and the production tool authority.
Reads completed. A write stopped with “Approval required.” No document
was created and no automatic retry was scheduled. All nine checks
passed: [events and
screenshots](https://www.braintrust.dev/app/Paperclip/object?object_type=project_logs&object_id=fda74078-b00d-495a-90d3-ea1be019d71b&id=1c4ff10be0d779cc).
- A separate full browser test assigned a skill, invoked it, and
completed with a marker absent from the task prompt: [skill
evidence](https://www.braintrust.dev/app/Paperclip/object?object_type=project_logs&object_id=fda74078-b00d-495a-90d3-ea1be019d71b&id=ba5fbcb29a60be52).
- Post-rebase checks passed: 128 targeted runner tests, 46 Rust tests,
27 sidecar/protocol contract tests, `pnpm -r typecheck`, and `pnpm
build`. The server/UI red-green checks and `pnpm check:token-gates` also
passed. The full suite passed in CI, including all general and
serialized test shards, all three browser shards, and runner
`check:all`. The duplicate unsharded local full-suite run was stopped
after CI passed.

Braintrust links require project access. The traces contain
provider/runner events and app outcomes. They do not contain raw model
HTTP requests.

## Risks

- `approve-reads` now allows assigned Paperclip reads. Other operations
that need approval stop the turn. Users must review the operation and
change permissions before retrying.
- The Claude settings depend on the pinned ACP and SDK behavior.
Automated tests and real Claude trials cover this boundary.
- The native Codex path is unchanged. The ACPX Codex fallback shares the
clearer approval failure handling.
- Local execution was tested end to end. Remote execution was not run.
This change has no database migration.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. The agent used reasoning, code execution,
and browser tools. The exact deployment ID and context-window size were
not exposed in the session. Live acceptance tests used
`claude-sonnet-5`.

DottaandPaperclip 422287eecd fix: preserve runner recovery, warm sessions, and task outcomes (#13338)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The native runner connects task messages, provider execution, and
task outcomes.
> - First-time user tests exposed gaps in recovery, completion
permissions, message delivery, and Stop behavior.
> - These gaps left usable output hidden, completed work waiting for
bookkeeping, or safe work unable to continue.
> - This pull request fixes the shared lifecycle and receipt paths while
preserving process ownership and action checks.
> - Users can continue work with accurate task state and durable
messages.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

A stopped local Codex execution could remain blocked even after its
processes had stopped and its complete transcript proved that no
external action needed replay. Claude under Conservative permissions
could fail to call task completion tools. Recovery could reuse an
assistant item ID and overwrite prior output. A delivered comment could
remain marked uncertain after navigation. Stop could look like Pause or
a new recovery incident. Workspace contention could look like
cancellation. A direct reply reopening Done could enter a clarification
loop.

**Expected behavior**

Recover automatically only with verified termination and complete action
receipts. Preserve answers and messages. Keep task completion available
under Conservative permissions without broad tool access. Show crashes
as Blocked, actual human decisions as In Review, and ordinary workspace
contention as waiting. Stop the current response and allow a new
direction.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Create ordinary response tasks with local Codex and Claude Code, then
send follow-up messages through the task composer.
2. Interrupt a disposable local Codex runner during text-only work.
Verify automatic continuation and retained output.
3. Stop a response, send a new request, answer a clarification, and
reopen completed work with another message.
4. Navigate or reload while a comment submission is pending. Confirm the
exact persisted request receipt settles it without removing newer draft
text.
5. Run two tasks in a shared Daytona workspace. Confirm waiting does not
appear as failure.

**Paperclip version or commit**

Initial acceptance baseline: `c9021c6721f91e2c74bd9fee9d3fd41c999d17b7`.
Current integration base: `6cef9743c`. Both operator-interruption and
workspace-waiting guards are preserved; native restart and legacy
permission rules remain documented.

**Deployment mode**

An isolated source-built test-drive instance, with real local Codex and
Claude Code providers and disposable Daytona environments.

Related work: #13314, #13316, #13327, #13344, #13239, #13254, #13163.
This PR addresses additional failures from ordinary task journeys,
including controller restart handoff and repeated warm sandbox setup.
Historical task status reconciliation is excluded.

## What Changed

- Persist runner ownership immediately at spawn and resume an explicitly
adopted runner even when the controller crashed before the first driver
checkpoint. Detach the controller safely across graceful restarts,
including session startup. Prevent an old finalizer from suspending or
signaling an adopted runner. Checkpoint idle warm sessions before
shutdown. Preserve the same run and queued follow-up messages.
- Scope saved legacy queue successor checks to the queue owner while
preserving ordinary task locks, operator identity, assignment gates, and
exactly-once delivery.
- Preserve managed Codex credential files when an old session is
detached for restart; normal owned cleanup still copies refreshed auth
back and removes the scoped copy.
- Reuse the bound warm shared sandbox and fully verify an existing
staged provider pack before using it. This avoids repeated uploads when
the pack is already valid.
- Add a narrow local Codex replacement path with stopped-process proof,
a closed transcript inventory, exact completion receipts, and
fresh-session lineage. Preserve no-replay holds when evidence is
incomplete. Recovery may clear only the same run's recorded Blocked
status version; manual re-blocking and dependency changes invalidate
that receipt, while queued comments do not. Later blocks stop scheduled,
queued, and final dispatch; queued/final checks re-read dependencies
even when the task status stays In Progress.
- Permit only task delivery and human-input tools through the isolated
Claude runner's exact task bridge.
- Scope assistant item identity to the provider turn and ignore only
authority-free Codex skill-change notifications during startup.
- Reconcile composer submissions by client request ID across response
loss, navigation, and reload. Retain text typed during delivery.
- Keep acknowledged run-only Stop neutral and show workspace contention
as waiting. Project exhausted native failures as Blocked.
- Restore the guarded task-page retry action for failed legacy runs,
including the server-supported explicit new-attempt path for stopped
conversation adapters. Preserve native/process recovery holds and avoid
promising Retry while a decision or execution gate hides it.
- Refresh delivered artifacts and handle direct user replies that reopen
completed work without a clarification loop.
- Check the embedded PostgreSQL PID, data directory, and actual port
before connecting or migrating.
- Document accepted behavior and add focused regressions at lifecycle,
route, transcript, and UI boundaries.

## Verification

- Final head `fece606ac2` passes the complete GitHub CI matrix: **34
green checks, two expected Storybook skips, no failures or pending
checks**, including `ci / verify`, `ci / e2e`, full runner verification,
typecheck, build, every server/workspace shard, and all browser shards.
[CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34727183287).
Greptile is **5/5 with no open findings**. The final two commits only
refine test fixtures; both affected suites pass 24/24 locally and in CI,
with server typecheck green.
- Complete local Vitest coverage uses the canonical groups/shards: all
635 general server suites, all 145 serialized suites, and all workspace
packages. The aggregate began on `0a8001c18` while the final queue fix
arrived: 23,903 passed, five failed, 87 skipped. The five
port/socket/timing failures passed unchanged in follow-ups (60 tests in
the exposure/file suites and 412 tests covering the serialized failures
and unrun tails). The final queue/operator-identity suites separately
passed 52/52. This is aggregate coverage plus explicit reruns, not a
pristine single-command final-head run.
- After integration with current master,
queue/operator-identity/continuation suites passed 162/162 and affected
UI suites passed 140/140. ACP Stop/continuation and legacy
task/Inbox/message browser suites passed 9/9, including both task
recovery Retry and thread Try again, automatic saved-message delivery,
exactly one new run, Done, and retained output after reload. The default
process Stop/Pause/Resume browser case passed (the native-provider case
is opt-in and skipped by default). The complete Board attachment/receipt
browser suite passed 11/11 on a disposable instance, covering both
composers, exact receipts after lost responses, no replay, bound
attachments, and newer drafts after reload.
- Blocking-intent regressions cover pre-existing Blocked, a mismatched
run/cause, an explicit manual re-block, changed dependencies, a queued
comment after failure, and a block arriving between scheduling and
provider dispatch. The negative cases reproduced before the fix. All 478
affected executor/recovery/dispatch tests passed; both database suites
ran separately after availability-probe skips in the first combined
command. The final late-dependency check passed all 143 affected
recovery/dispatch tests (zero skips) after two new negative cases
reproduced the bug.
- Focused runtime regressions cover awaited runner ownership
publication, authenticated adoption before the first checkpoint,
old-finalizer detachment, idle and busy warm-session shutdown, rejected
checkpoint propagation, provider-pack verification, and managed-Codex
credential preservation. Four managed credential detachment cases
reproduced the bug before the fix; normal owned cleanup still succeeds
exactly once.
- Live local Claude: SIGKILL 2.6 seconds into startup recovered the same
run automatically in 53 seconds, then a normal follow-up completed in 24
seconds. SIGTERM 2.5 seconds into startup preserved the same run (54
seconds) and its queued follow-up (21 seconds). Answers remained visible
and the task reached Done.
- Live Claude Daytona: a warm follow-up retained its sandbox and fell
from 121 seconds to 44 seconds. A separate cold turn took 127 seconds;
after controller shutdown and checkpointing, its follow-up completed in
33 seconds with the same sandbox, workspace, native session, and runner.
Both answers remained visible and the task was Done.
- Other live journeys covered task completion and follow-up with local
and Daytona Codex, local Codex crash recovery, Stop then new direction,
clarification response, live artifact refresh, and shared-workspace
waiting.
- Validation limits: the opt-in native composer Stop/Pause→subtree
Resume fixture exposes terminal/result ordering and subtree-cancellation
attribution bugs that can leave a child task blocked; that new finding
is assigned to a separate follow-up and is not claimed fixed here.
Default CI skips this optional native-provider fixture. Managed-Codex
credential handoff and the queue-agent integration use automated
regression evidence. Cold custom provider-pack uploads still add startup
latency.

## Risks

- Automatic replacement remains deliberately narrow: local Codex,
verified stopped identities, unchanged retained state, and a complete
text/completion-only turn. Unknown actions, partial history, or changed
ownership remain blocked.
- Claude completion permission handling changes an upstream package
patch. The exact isolated task bridge must remain pinned; unrelated
tools keep their existing permissions.
- New task failure projection changes user-visible status. No historical
status backfill or database migration is included.
- This is a broad lifecycle fix across server and UI. Live proof covers
graceful local Claude restart during startup and idle Claude Daytona
session recovery across controller shutdown. Live abrupt SIGKILL during
local Claude startup also recovered the same run. Unknown ownership or
missing action evidence still blocks reuse. Cold custom provider-pack
uploads still add startup latency; this change avoids unnecessary repeat
uploads.

## Model Used

OpenAI GPT-6 (Codex), with reasoning, code execution, browser
automation, and tool use. The exact hosted model ID and context window
are not exposed in this task.

DottaandPaperclip ab15aff390 feat: add experimental persistent agent chat (#13284)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Conversations must use the same tasks, controls, and execution
history.
> - Users need an ongoing chat with an agent without managing task
properties.
> - Agents should clarify and plan work, then hand execution to assigned
project tasks.
> - This pull request combines the reviewed Agent Chat stack for one
squash merge.
> - The benefit is persistent conversation with normal task governance
and shared UI.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Task lifecycle, agent runtime tools, shared task UI, and browser/paid
runner tests.

**Problem or motivation**

Users need one persistent conversation with each agent. A separate chat
store or renderer would duplicate task behavior and bypass existing
controls.

**Proposed solution**

Use a task-backed chat per company, user, and agent. Reuse the task
composer and transcript. Clarify and plan in chat, then create assigned
project tasks with the relevant plan. Keep Agent Chat behind its own
disabled-by-default experimental setting.

**Roadmap alignment**

This implements the task-backed direction in [CEO
Chat](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/master/ROADMAP.md#-ceo-chat).
Related proposals: #2504 and #9693. Related request: #7981. The
maintainer requested one squash merge of the complete stack.

Consolidates the reviewed runtime
[#13281](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13281), backend
[#13282](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13282), and UI
[#13283](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13283) layers
with this PR's E2E coverage. All four layers passed CI and received
Greptile 5/5 before consolidation. This PR targets master and includes
the complete feature.

## What Changed

- Add personal canonical chat tasks with ordinary company visibility,
immutable identity, idempotent first sends, and an idle waiting state.
- Process `/new` in queue order. Preserve history, release a chat pause,
and fence old provider context and delayed writes.
- Keep chat lifecycle rules across recovery, finalization, assignment,
task lists, and rollups.
- Support research and plan revision in chat. Hand plans to ordinary
assigned project tasks before execution starts. Reject new chat
subtasks.
- Add repository-aware project creation and discovery tools, including
multiple repository IDs and GitHub URLs, authorization, idempotency, and
durable project-created cards.
- Reuse task UI components for chat, with starred/recent agent
navigation and a separate `enableAgentChat` experimental flag.
- Add deterministic browser tests and 24 paid chat cells across four
Codex/Claude profiles, with validated reports and screenshots.
- Integrate current master recovery, controller lease, queued-message,
and task UI changes. Gate chat interruption and deferred promotion on
ownership/feature policy. Guarantee lease renewal and active controls
are stopped even if teardown fails.
- Preserve master's migration 0273 and generate chat migration 0274 with
idempotent replay for development databases.

## Verification

- Prior exact heads of all four PRs passed Linux CI, including build,
typecheck, general/serialized tests, and browser E2E. Each had Greptile
5/5 and no unresolved findings.
- Integrated local verification passed: full repository typecheck and
production build, Storybook build, token gates, 340 focused UI tests,
all 20 deterministic chat browser tests, two migration replay tests, 88
focused chat/queue/native/controller tests, and provider/session
regressions including real lease expiry. These include the three
lifecycle regressions for the final admission/teardown fixes; server
typecheck also passes. Current head
`1268eda16cc2af892055917e7292f068820be135` has Greptile 5/5 with no
unresolved findings and passing security scans. All final-head CI gates
passed: build, full Runner verification, typecheck/release registry,
canary, all general/serialized test shards, and all browser E2E shards
([CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34696739927)).
Local PostgreSQL startup contention required serialized retries; skipped
fixtures do not count as passing coverage.
- The earlier paid campaign passed all 24 chat cells and retained 32
screenshots:
[report](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-34648511170-1/index.html?report=agent-chat#suite-agent-chat).
It tested `abacbdfd2f660709ec37312cdb758284c8399d04`; it is prior
evidence, not a paid run of this integrated head.
- Manual check: enable Agent Chat in Experimental settings, open an
agent, clarify and revise a plan, then hand off to an assigned project
task. Stop a reply, send `/new`, and verify fresh context with retained
history. Disable the setting and verify agent shortcuts/new chat turns
are blocked.

## Risks

- Queue/session integration can affect retries and delayed writes. Tests
cover ownership, cancellation, reset boundaries, idle recovery, and
ordinary task behavior.
- Migration 0274 adds conversation fields and constraints. Replay is
idempotent and preserves existing development chat history.
- This combines the previously reviewed stack at the maintainer's
request. Agent Chat remains off by default and is separate from
Conference Room.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 Astra (`gpt-6-astra`), with reasoning, code
execution, browser tools, and parallel review. The exact context-window
size is not exposed in this session. Codex and Claude also ran as test
subjects in the linked paid campaign.

DottaandPaperclip 2043e0c735 fix: repair runner configuration, macOS execution, and artifact galleries (#13062)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Agent adapters select a provider, a model, and a runtime.
> - Runner conversion rejected existing Claude agents. The model list
mixed providers.
> - The native Claude runner rejected custom models and could not launch
on macOS.
> - This pull request fixes conversion, model selection, and verified
macOS execution.
> - It also groups configuration fields consistently across adapters and
opens artifact images in the task gallery.
> - Operators can change an agent configuration and run the selected
model on their Mac.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Converting an existing Claude agent to Paperclip Runner failed with a
Codex-only restriction. ACPX Claude showed unrelated models and required
`claude-sonnet-5`. Its native runtime rejected macOS. Configuration
mixed common model settings with process controls. Artifact cards
labeled “Open gallery” navigated to attachment URLs instead of opening
the task gallery.

**Expected behavior**

Conversion keeps agent identity and compatible settings. ACPX Claude
uses the normal Claude catalog and accepts typed model IDs. Codex uses
the native runner. The verified Claude runtime can launch on macOS ARM64
and x64. Common configuration sections place the same fields together
across adapters. Artifact images open in the shared task gallery with
navigation and downloads.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Open the configuration of an existing Claude agent.
2. Convert it to Paperclip Runner.
3. Select ACPX Claude and a different catalog model or a typed model ID.
4. Save the agent and run a disposable task on macOS.
5. Inspect configuration and advanced run-policy controls across
adapters.

**Paperclip version or commit**

The bugs were reproduced on `165ca56a22adb60e5fda56045442d9c8498116a8`.
This branch was rebased onto `7ed122911`.

**Deployment mode**

Built from source. Local test-drive instance on macOS ARM64 with an
isolated database.

Related work: #11798 addresses unsupported ACP session options in the
existing adapter path. #13048 addresses working-folder preservation.
This change fixes native runner configuration and launch behavior.

## What Changed

- Remove the Codex-only conversion restriction. Preserve agent identity,
instructions, directories, credentials, and compatible model settings.
Reset incompatible sessions while retaining history.
- Show ACPX Claude and native Codex as distinct provider choices. Remove
ACPX Codex from advertised configuration. Normalize legacy
configurations before fresh runs without rewriting historical run
descriptors.
- Select model catalogs and cache entries by provider. Support refresh
and typed model IDs. Pass exact Claude IDs through session creation,
model changes, and recovery.
- Add verified macOS ARM64 and x64 Claude SDK snapshots. Bound
executable allocation and total snapshot size. Preserve package checks,
dependency isolation, process ownership, cancellation, and Linux
descriptor loading.
- Probe local runtime readiness. Report remote platform checks as
incomplete until the remote runner verifies its runtime.
- Surface actual model rejection and allow correction and retry.
- Repair missing ACPX goal-capability helpers exposed by the post-rebase
live test. Persist and restore the optional capability without breaking
session startup.
- Put Agent identity first and intentionally remove the Capabilities
editor, as requested. This is removal of UI editing, not relocation:
preserve existing capability metadata and API compatibility without
adding another editor. Use the themed select for configurable permission
modes, with normal text instead of monospace.
- Put model and provider under Adapter. Give environment variables their
own section. Fold command and arguments under Configuration. Fold
lifecycle, timeout, and interrupt grace under Advanced Run Policy. Hide
single-option permission controls.

- Open image and video artifact cards in the existing task gallery,
including cards in the artifacts panel. Chat attachment images use the
same gallery. Preserve standalone media previews and download links.

## Verification

- Rebased focused UI/API/database suites: 293 tests passed.
- Rebased native runtime and ACPX suites: 242 passed, 7 skipped.
- Repository typecheck, build, and token gates passed for the runner
changes. Gallery follow-up UI typecheck, build, and token gates also
passed.
- Follow-up UI suites passed (86 tests), packaging checks passed (14
tests), and the final focused runtime suites passed (126 passed, 7
skipped).
- Linux container isolation and lifecycle fixtures passed before rebase
(57 passed, 2 skipped). Rust ACPX provider-session tests passed after
rebase (8 tests).
- Browser tests completed actual Claude and native Codex tasks on macOS
ARM64. They covered conversion, catalog refresh, a non-default catalog
model, a typed `haiku` ID, save/reload, cancel, follow-up session
continuity, invalid-model errors, and recovery.
- Final-revision live tests completed a typed Claude task, a follow-up
with the same provider session, and a native Codex task on macOS ARM64.
- Browser tests confirmed the moved interrupt-grace field saves and
survives reload. Cross-adapter tests cover Claude, Codex, Gemini,
process, gateway, and schema forms.
- Full local run: 7,080 passed, 30 skipped, and two timeouts. Both
timeout suites passed on isolated rerun (84 tests); the failures were
the plugin login-worker exit diagnostic and the runner real-server
vertical slice.
- Final follow-up checks: 50 registry tests and 45 snapshot/installation
tests passed (6 platform-specific skips). Oversized executable rejection
is covered before allocation or reading; unsupported-platform tests
invoke the real installation probe.
- Runner head `ddb5101c483a297f74875ab96b3c66035b002d50`: all CI gates
green, including full runner verification, repository build, typecheck,
general/serialized server suites, browser tests, and canary dry run. [CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34286178670).
- Greptile: 5/5 on that runner head. All four review threads resolved.
Superagent, Socket, and Snyk checks green.
- After snapshot hardening, another real Claude task completed on this
Mac using the rebuilt runtime.

- Gallery follow-up: 148 focused tests passed, covering artifact
selection, shared attachment collections, deduplication, image/video
cards, standalone previews, downloads, and closing. Live browser
verification completed on the settings follow-up: artifact selection,
6-image pagination with wrapping, download action, and closing all
stayed on the same task URL. All checks passed on gallery head
`96136da58ff195bf6ca00b281eb3022ad12d7bd8`: [CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34287987536).
Greptile returned 5/5 on that exact head with no unresolved threads.

- Final settings polish: 96 focused tests, UI typecheck/build, and token
gates passed. A real browser walkthrough verified readable permission
options, identity placement, Capabilities removal, and permission
save/reload. Original test-agent permission mode restored. All 31 checks
passed on final head `e46540d6bf32bfb0566dca16b2f4a75ba437618c`: [CI
run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34292797886).
Greptile returned 5/5 with no unresolved threads.

## Risks

- Capabilities intentionally has no editable UI field after this change.
Existing values remain readable and API-compatible; removing the field
does not erase stored metadata.

- macOS launch now copies verified package files into private snapshots.
The implementation must retain isolation and clean up snapshots on exit.
- Runtime provider or model changes reset the current session.
Historical runs remain available.
- The macOS x64 SDK executable digest was verified, but a live Intel Mac
run was not available. Linux verification used container fixtures, not a
real Claude task.
- Remote environment tests report a warning when only the platform has
been checked. They do not claim package readiness from the server host.

## Model Used

OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact served model identifier and
context-window limit are not exposed in this session. Used reasoning,
repository inspection, code execution, Rust and TypeScript tests, and
browser automation.

DottaandPaperclip 83987210d6 fix(runner): align direct eval provider setup with qualified runtimes (#12945)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - Runner direct live evals test semantic tools against a mock control
plane.
> - The first complete AWS campaign exercised 358 cells.
> - It exposed setup differences from the working full-stack harness.
> - This pull request corrects those direct-harness differences.
> - It preserves production permission defaults and the full-stack
workflow.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**What happened?**

Native Codex cells could not find a global codex executable. ACPX denied
unattended tool requests and lost valid provider usage receipts.
AgentCore hit a 30-second facade timeout while its worker allows 120
seconds for delivery. Several models reported a native run result
without updating the separate mock task state.

**What did you expect?**

The direct harness should use the pinned executable, explicit test
permissions, and a timeout compatible with the provider delivery
contract. Its instructions should explain which operation changes mock
task state.

**Steps to reproduce**

Run the full Runner Direct Live Protocol Evals workflow. Baseline
campaign:
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34059009921.

**Paperclip version**

Master at b55ce03e86. Related public
change: #12932. No duplicate fix was found.

## What Changed

- Resolve native Codex from the pinned Codex ACP dependency, as the
full-stack launcher does.
- Select explicit unattended ACPX permissions only in the isolated
direct eval harness.
- Add a configurable bounded turn-admission wait. AgentCore direct evals
use up to 125 seconds, capped by their turn budget. Other callers retain
the current default waits.
- Explain mock task-state operations separately from native run-result
reporting. Keep all scoring assertions unchanged.
- Bind the direct turn's scope to the current request, rather than stale
shared fixture notes. A provider's end-of-turn result does not authorize
an unrequested mock task completion or extra completion comment.
- Normalize the qualified Claude/Codex usage semantics without
double-counting reasoning or inventing unknown billable categories.
Forward ACPX's persisted terminal prompt-response usage for the exact
current turn; reject stale or ambiguous receipts.
- Preserve the known numeric ACPX token-counter aliases through durable
redaction. Continue redacting strings and credential-shaped values. A
regression test reproduces the previously redacted usage before
normalization.
- Add regression tests and operating documentation.

## Verification

- Passed Runner TypeScript build.
- Passed 88 focused tests across the eval request contract, provider
setup, and Runner transport.
- Passed 93 focused ACPX adapter, sidecar lifecycle, and
usage-accounting tests, including persisted receipt identity and
missing-field regressions.
- Passed 97 additional runtime-host, in-process ACPX driver, OpenCode
proxy, and MCP bridge tests.
- Reproduced the ACPX counter-redaction failure, then passed 36 Rust
decoder/normalizer and durable-redaction tests after the fix.
Credential-shaped strings and objects remain redacted.
- Native Codex get-task-context passed a real provider probe with no
global CLI dependency.
- Local ACPX probes reached a platform startup rejection on macOS;
qualification therefore used the intended AWS Linux fleet. Complete
campaign 34060573948 reached 341/358 passing with zero infrastructure
failures (up from 250/358 and 100 infrastructure failures). ACPX Claude
reached 34/35, ACPX Codex 7/8, native Codex 34/35, and AgentCore 35/35.
Remaining failures were retained in the canonical report:
https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-protocol-evals/campaigns/gha-34060573948-1/.
- Final complete campaign 34062394019 exercises the current-request
scope clarification with all 358 cells; results pending.
- Passed git diff --check.
- Repo-wide typecheck, build, and tests are delegated to PR CI. They
were not repeated on this machine.

## Risks

- ACPX approval is scoped to the operator-requested isolated fixture
harness. Production defaults do not change.
- AgentCore admission can wait longer, but remains within the whole-turn
budget.
- The mock fixture has no production task lifecycle service. Explicit
task-state instructions describe that boundary; they do not relax
scoring.
- This change does not modify the browser full-stack workflow or its
test fixtures.
- ACPX receipt corrections apply to all native ACPX sessions. They rely
on the pinned qualified server contracts; unknown or ambiguous receipts
stay unknown, and a final accounting-read error never overwrites the
provider's terminal result.

## Model Used

- OpenAI GPT-6 (`gpt-6-astra`) through Codex, with reasoning, tool use,
and code execution. The session does not expose an exact context-window
limit.

Dotta af3023f1e3 fix(runner): repair paid provider startup paths (#12769)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip manages AI agents that perform work.
> - Paperclip Runner connects durable task runs to local provider
processes.
> - The full-stack paid matrix exposed failures after the runner
integrity repair.
> - Verified JavaScript entrypoints lost their relative module graph
when Linux executed them through descriptor paths.
> - Returned provider startup errors also remained pending and became
indeterminate after recovery.
> - Sparse Codex tool lifecycle events lost the `write_document`
identity before task transcript projection.
> - This pull request repairs those three boundaries and makes the
structured-question fixture deterministic.
> - The benefit is repeatable provider startup, exact failure replay,
and correct inline Plan placement.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12721 and #12700.

**What happened?**

The paid runner matrix failed ACPX and OpenCode startup before provider
session creation. The runner journal then replaced the original startup
error with an indeterminate recovery result. Native Codex saved a Plan
but rendered it only as a fallback card. A legacy Claude waiting reply
could also echo the reserved terminal marker before the answer arrived.

**Expected behavior**

Verified JavaScript providers must start from immutable
descriptor-backed artifacts. Returned startup failures must persist as
terminal failed command results. Native tool lifecycle updates must
preserve the `write_document` boundary. Pre-answer fixture output must
not contain the reserved terminal marker.

**Steps to reproduce**

1. Run the local provider cells in the Runner Full-Stack E2E workflow.
2. Observe ACPX and OpenCode fail during `session.open` before provider
execution.
3. Observe recovery report `execution_indeterminate` instead of the
original startup error.
4. Run the native Codex Plan cell and observe the fallback Plan card
after the tool activity row.
5. Run the legacy Claude structured-question resume cell and observe an
early marker echo in waiting prose.

**Paperclip version or commit**

`0f9452101740835ce0b1488a204bf48acd5bafc3`

**Deployment mode**

Local development with the paid GitHub Actions acceptance workflow.

## What Changed

- Bundle the ACPX sidecar and OpenCode proxy as self-contained Node ESM
entrypoints before hashing and verified descriptor launch.
- Anchor ACPX dynamic provider package resolution at a
controller-derived provider-pack root and keep that root out of the
provider child environment.
- Persist executor-returned startup errors as redacted durable failed
command results while retaining indeterminate recovery for true process
death.
- Coalesce sparse native tool items by stable ID so a late
`write_document` name, input, and result reach the transcript boundary
once.
- Forbid the structured-question fixture from spelling or announcing its
reserved terminal marker before the user answers.

## Verification

- Rust and TypeScript regression tests cover durable failed replay, true
crash ambiguity, bundle closure, package-root derivation, environment
filtering, exact Codex tool lifecycle coalescing, and prompt
determinism.
- Local execution is intentionally limited to formatters and static diff
checks. GitHub Actions will run tests, type checks, builds, and security
checks.
- After ordinary CI is green, scoped paid cells will validate one ACPX
launch, one OpenCode launch, native Codex Plan projection, and legacy
Claude structured resume before a complete matrix rerun.
- Prior failing matrix:
https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/33682434315

## Risks

- Bundling changes the bytes covered by provider launch hashes.
Provider-pack generation already hashes the final built files.
- ACPX still loads qualified provider packages dynamically. The
controller supplies a normalized package root, while existing version,
digest, path, and descriptor checks remain active.
- Durable `failed` is terminal. Replays return the same redacted result
and do not execute the provider effect twice.

DottaandDev Agent 25cf079ec5 feat(runner): add Codex-native application integration (#12591)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The runner package is useful only when the application can start,
observe, and recover a native Codex run safely.
> - Existing direct adapters must keep their current execution and
finalization paths.
> - The application boundary therefore needs additive persistence,
authorization, coordination, and recovery behind an explicit
experimental adapter.
> - This pull request adds that Codex-only boundary without activating
generalized providers, remote environments, or the later task/SDK
surfaces.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Shared contracts, database persistence, adapter utilities, server
native-runtime services, and the experimental Paperclip Runner adapter.

**Problem or motivation**

The already-landed runner package has a qualified Codex path, but the
application needs durable native-run state, guarded runtime selection,
authenticated coordination, tool security, finalization, and recovery
before the experimental adapter can be exercised safely.

**Proposed solution**

Add a Codex-only `paperclip_runner` application path behind the existing
default-off native-runner setting. Bind native state and coordination to
company/run identity, preserve persisted-run recovery, and leave every
direct adapter on its existing legacy execution path.

**Alternatives considered**

The earlier stack boundary introduced a generalized executor and
remote-environment lifecycle here. That made this PR depend on
implementations in higher PRs and changed reusable sandbox behavior
globally. Those pieces are now deferred together to #12592.

**Roadmap alignment**

ROADMAP.md does not list a conflicting native-runner integration
project. This change adds the application boundary for the existing
Runner architecture.

## What Changed

- Added native run/result/finalization/provider-trace persistence,
shared validators, and idempotent migration/replay coverage.
- Added guarded Codex-only runtime selection, authenticated PRP
coordination, recovery, finalization, and interaction services.
- Added run/company-bound tool-gateway authorization, credential
redaction, SSRF protections, and replay-safe behavior.
- Added the explicit `paperclip_runner` adapter behind the default-off
rollout setting.
- Preserved legacy answered-question wake projection and direct-adapter
execution/finalization paths.
- Hardened cancellation so only owned in-memory child processes are
signaled; persisted recycled PIDs/process groups are never trusted.
- Retained the narrow Claude ACPX isolated-context security follow-up
discovered after #12590.
- Deferred the generalized executor, provider ingress, remote lifecycle,
SDK/lab/eval work, release-process changes, and lockfile.

## Verification

- Changed-file delta against `master`: 133 files.
- GitHub Actions is the authoritative verification environment for this
PR.
- Full CI, security, and Greptile review will run on this lowest
unmerged stack PR.
- Local tests/build/typecheck were not run because this checkout is
resource constrained.
- Static diff/reference checks pass, and `pnpm-lock.yaml` is unchanged.

## Risks

- This touches central heartbeat and agent-route code, so legacy
compatibility is the primary risk.
- Runtime selection remains Codex-only and explicit; direct Codex,
Claude, OpenCode, process, HTTP, and plugin adapters remain on their
existing paths.
- Fresh native starts fail closed while the rollout flag is off;
persisted native records remain readable and recoverable.
- Cancellation, company/run binding, tool calls, status decisions, and
completion writes are guarded or replay-safe.

discuss it in #dev before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with
planned core work may need to be redirected.

Dotta ad0ad43cf4 feat(runner): activate qualified Claude ACPX runtime (#12590)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip Runner already has a hardened ACPX path for Codex.
> - Claude can reuse that protocol only with an exact package/model
profile and provider-lifetime fencing.
> - Pi needs a separately spawned runtime whose executable does not yet
have the descriptor-confined verified launch used by the ACP server.
> - This pull request therefore activates Claude only and keeps Pi
unavailable before installation or process launch.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Subsystem affected**

Paperclip Runner ACPX driver, runtime host, sidecar, backend factory,
package dependency, and provider conformance tests.

**Problem or motivation**

The production ACPX backend was Codex-only. Claude needs the same
fail-closed model, authorization, cancellation, cleanup, and recovery
boundaries without exposing an unsafe secondary runtime path.

**Proposed solution**

Generalize the hardened ACPX runtime for the exact qualified `claude`
profile, add the pinned Claude ACP package and reviewed isolation patch,
and reject Pi before installation, backend construction, sidecar
initialization, Rust session admission, or process creation.

**Alternatives considered**

Activating Pi in this PR was rejected after security review because its
secondary runtime executable was pathname-based and lacked the verified
descriptor/snapshot boundary. Pi is deferred to a dedicated follow-up.
Replaying the older generic ACPX implementation was rejected because it
predates current hardening.

**Roadmap alignment**

ROADMAP.md does not list a conflicting ACPX-provider project. This
extends the existing Runner provider architecture.

## What Changed

- Generalized the ACPX backend, driver, runtime adapter, host, and
sidecar for the qualified Claude profile.
- Added Claude ACPX activation through its exact pinned package/model
pair and isolated-settings patch.
- Added provider-lifetime fencing for non-Codex qualified ACPX sessions.
- Kept Pi dependencies and its patch out of the package and build
configuration.
- Added fail-closed Pi rejection at driver validation, backend
construction, runtime-host admission, sidecar initialization, and Rust
session validation.
- Added focused tests for Claude selection, model enforcement, lifecycle
fencing, cancellation, recovery, and Pi rejection.
- Did not change or commit `pnpm-lock.yaml`; CI regenerates the PR
lockfile under the existing repository policy.

## Verification

- GitHub Actions is the authoritative verification environment for this
PR.
- CI runs dependency policy, runner package checks, protocol parity,
typecheck, build, security, and stack policy.
- Local tests were not run because this checkout is resource
constrained, per the requested workflow.

## Risks

- Claude package behavior can drift from the qualified protocol; the
package and patch are pinned and admission verifies the exact profile.
- Unsupported providers and models fail closed.
- Pi remains unavailable until descriptor-confined verified launch
exists for its separate runtime.
- Existing Codex ACPX behavior remains covered by shared conformance
tests.

Dotta 9ad8dbffa0 feat(runner): add Codex ACPX sidecar (#12410)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The runner needs a bounded process boundary for each qualified
provider runtime.
> - The ACPX contract, Codex profile, structured questions, and recovery
rules now exist in the package.
> - The package does not yet provide an executable that applies those
rules to a real Codex ACPX host.
> - Provider admission must retain process, credential, and cleanup
ownership on every failure path.
> - A production selector must not depend on an unreviewed
provider-generic sidecar.
> - This pull request adds one installable Codex-only ACPX sidecar and
leaves it unselected.
> - The benefit is a testable package boundary for later runnerd
integration without changing current execution selection.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12409

Refs #12386

This pull request implements the Codex-only executable for the ACPX
sidecar contract merged in #12386. It builds on the question conformance
gate merged in #12409. Runnerd and the server do not select this
executable in this pull request.

## What Changed

- Publish the `paperclip-runner-acpx-sidecar` package binary and
document its current boundary.
- Add a versioned stdin/stdout sidecar that admits only the qualified
Codex ACPX profile and exact initialized model.
- Support atomic session open, run attachment, turn start and
cancellation, tool and input resolution, session read and snapshot, safe
suspension, close, and recovery identity checks.
- Bind runtime directory, workspace, permission mode, provider identity,
run identity, and semantic tool catalog before use.
- Validate completion and blocked results against the PRP result
contract. Bound pending tools, pending inputs, messages, events, usage,
diagnostics, and errors.
- Redact provider output and convert file locations to bounded
workspace-relative display data. Do not treat displayed paths as
file-access authority.
- Harden verified executable loading, module resolution, launch
environment filtering, process-group guardianship, and provider
termination.
- Retain managed credentials and every failed-admission resource until
the exact provider cleanup proves ownership was released.
- Keep failed-admission cleanup alive with bounded backoff until the
provider exits. Do not scrub credentials or admit a replacement while
cleanup still owns the provider.
- Use one runtime-host cleanup-owner registry and preserve sequential
cleanup retries across command timeouts and shutdown.
- Arm a credential-free same-group watchdog before provider admission so
guardian death reaps even a stopped provider; retain an independent
kernel EOF proof before releasing credentials.
- Add sidecar process, lifecycle, location, package, driver, credential,
installation, runtime-adapter, and runtime-host regression tests.
- Add `tsx` as a package test-only development dependency for the real
TypeScript sidecar process test.

  - `packages/paperclip-runner/src/drivers/acpx/runtime-host.test.ts`
- `packages/paperclip-runner/test/acpx-codex-package-contract.test.mjs`
- The resolved combined delta is 4,725 additions and 665 deletions; it
preserves the lower-PR runtime-close semantics, repairs stale
successful-admission fixtures, deterministically observes renewed
reconciliation, accepts authoritative same-host cleanup recovery without
dropping pending owners, ignores superseded cleanup failures after a
newer owner recovers, and requires both guardian exit and independent
provider-lifetime EOF before releasing cleanup or credential ownership.
A readiness-gated, credential-free watchdog also reaps a stopped
provider if its guardian is externally killed.
- This change updates the runner package manifest, README, and test-only
dependencies. It does not change `pnpm-lock.yaml`, a workflow,
migration, server route, UI path, runnerd selection, or current
direct-adapter behavior.
- Focused GitHub verification: **PASSED** for the sidecar process,
lifecycle, location, package-contract, driver, credential,
installation-integrity, runtime-adapter, and runtime-host suites on the
replayed head.
- Package verification: **PASSED** for the clean tarball, Node shebang,
and exact binary mapping on the replayed head.
- GitHub Actions and security checks: **PASSED** for the replayed exact
head; full CI run `33357846557` completed 23/23 jobs successfully, and
Superagent, Socket, Snyk, supply-chain, and contributor-trust checks are
green. Storybook was intentionally skipped because this PR does not
touch its paths.
- Greptile: **5/5** on the exact head with zero unresolved review
threads.
- No local test result is claimed. GitHub Actions is the authoritative
verification environment for the replayed revision.

## Risks

This change has medium security and lifecycle risk because the new
executable crosses a process, credential, filesystem, and provider
boundary. The sidecar fails closed on unsupported providers, models,
permissions, identities, catalogs, forms, commands, and persistent-state
deletion. A cleanup owner can remain alive until a stubborn provider
exits. Its retries use bounded backoff, and admission stays closed while
ownership remains. Command and shutdown waits remain bounded without
abandoning the underlying cleanup. The new `tsx` dependency is
development-only. The package exposes a new binary, but no runnerd,
server, UI, or direct-adapter path starts it in this pull request.

Dotta 4fe3189f02 feat(runner): bridge Codex ACPX questions (#12408)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The runner package gives provider sessions one normalized execution
contract.
> - The merged Codex ACPX path can run and recover settled turns.
> - It cannot yet send a structured provider question through the
existing Paperclip question boundary.
> - Provider questions must not expose ACPX-specific data to later
server integrations.
> - Every pending provider request must also settle on resolution,
handoff, cancellation, failure, or close.
> - This pull request adds a bounded Codex ACPX form bridge inside the
runner package.
> - The benefit is a provider-neutral question flow with fail-closed
lifecycle handling.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12407

This pull request builds on the settled Codex ACPX recovery path merged
in #12407. It adds only package-local structured-question support for
Codex ACPX sessions.

## What Changed

- Enable ACPX form elicitation for the Codex runtime and pass its
handler through the runtime host boundary.
- Normalize ACPX forms to `paperclip.question_set.v1` and emit
`paperclip.runtime_request.v2` events.
- Validate `paperclip.question_response.v1` resolutions before
conversion to ACP form responses.
- Support explicit resolution and durable handoff. Cancel pending
requests on provider abort, stream failure, turn settlement, and session
close.
- Limit each session to 16 pending requests. Reject unsupported input
modes, regular expression patterns, session-wide acceptance, stale
turns, and late responses.
- Fail closed under bounded event-queue pressure: cancel an input whose
creation event cannot be retained, and preserve a live request when its
durable-handoff event cannot be retained.
- Persist pending-request facts in snapshots and reject recovery while a
provider request is still pending.
- Add focused driver, runtime-adapter, and runtime-host regression tests
for round trips, aborts, stream failures, handoff, and handler
forwarding.

- The exact combined delta is 716 additions and 14 deletions.
- This change does not add a dependency, lockfile update, migration,
workflow, server route, UI change, documentation file, or public package
export.
- GitHub Actions run `33351323368` passed the full matrix on the exact
replay head, including Paperclip Runner verification, build,
typecheck/release-registry, general and serialized server suites,
canary, and all e2e shards.
- Superagent, Socket, Snyk, contributor-trust, policy, and PR-review
checks pass on the exact replay head.
- Greptile reviewed the exact replay head at 5/5 with no blocking
finding and zero review threads.
- No local test result is claimed. GitHub Actions is the authoritative
verification environment for the replayed revision.

## Risks

This change has medium package-local risk because it connects
provider-owned input to durable runner state. Unsupported modes and
unbounded patterns fail closed. The pending-request limit bounds
retained provider state. Provider abort, turn settlement, stream
failure, and session close cancel live questions. A durable handoff
expires the request before it interrupts the turn. Recovery rejects a
snapshot that still contains a pending provider request. Existing direct
adapters, server selection, and task-page behavior do not use this
route.

Dotta 96421b0663 feat(runner): recover settled Codex ACPX sessions (#12407)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The runner package keeps provider sessions durable across process
restarts.
> - The merged Codex ACPX backend can admit a new qualified session
through the package factory.
> - It cannot yet recover a settled session from a durable checkpoint.
> - Recovery must prove the same provider identity, runtime root,
workspace, and latest terminal settlement before it resumes.
> - ACPX cannot yet prove continuity for a provider turn that was active
when the process stopped.
> - This pull request recovers only settled Codex ACPX checkpoints and
rejects ambiguous or stale state.
> - The benefit is fail-closed restart recovery without repeated work,
silent session replacement, or recovery of an older semantic result.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12406

This pull request builds on the Codex ACPX backend route merged in
#12406. It adds only settled-session recovery and the package-local
durability and filesystem checks that recovery requires.

## What Changed

- Add settled-session recovery to the Codex ACPX harness driver and
advertise resume support for that bounded path.
- Keep provider recovery on the same persisted ACPX session. Do not
permit a replacement provider session.
- Require persisted run, normalized session, provider, profile,
workspace, permission, result, terminal, and recovery-policy identities
to agree.
- Reopen the provider with the exact persisted ACPX identity and reject
provider or qualification drift.
- Restore the last source sequence, terminal history, semantic result,
provider recovery policy, and normalized terminal fact before new work
can start.
- Clear a stale active-turn marker only when durable terminal history
proves that exact turn settled.
- Reject active-turn recovery when durable history cannot prove
provider-turn continuity.
- Require a semantic result to belong to the latest completed terminal
settlement.
- Reject an older completed semantic result when a later identical retry
failed or was interrupted.
- Reject resultless recovery unless the latest terminal turn completed
successfully.
- Bound terminal history and semantic-result recovery by entry count,
aggregate bytes, fingerprint bytes, node count, and nesting depth before
cloning or serializing persisted data.
- Read the private workspace record through pinned namespace,
runtime-root, record, and workspace identities.
- Reject symbolic links, substituted directories, replaced records,
invalid files, root workspaces, and workspace changes during admission.
- Keep the recovery workspace lease pinned and revalidate it at the host
and provider-spawn boundaries.
- Retain and close a workspace lease that resolves after cancellation.
Close a partially recovered provider session if lease cleanup fails.
- Stage a valid isolated Codex credential in the runtime-open-boundary
regression so the test reaches and proves the intended workspace
revalidation fence.
- Add focused recovery tests for settled checkpoints, terminal
ownership, stale semantic results, active turns, identity drift, bounded
persisted data, cancellation, directory substitution, record
replacement, and spawn-boundary workspace replacement.

## Risks

This change has medium package-local risk because it admits persisted
state back into a provider session. Recovery fails closed when an active
provider turn has no matching terminal fingerprint, when a semantic
result is not owned by the latest completed settlement, when any durable
identity changes, or when the workspace cannot remain pinned through
provider spawn. Recovery never selects a replacement provider session.
Bounds prevent oversized or deeply nested persisted state from consuming
unbounded work before validation. The workspace lease prevents path
substitution during recovery admission. Existing direct adapters and the
Codex app-server driver do not use this ACPX recovery route. This change
does not add a migration, dependency, lockfile update, workflow, server
route, UI surface, public export, or production rollout flag.

Dotta 74aabb7ea6 feat(runner): add Codex ACPX harness driver (#12405)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The runner package hides provider behavior behind the
`HarnessDriver` contract.
> - The admitted Codex ACPX runtime can open sessions, execute bounded
turns, and use run-scoped semantic tools.
> - The package still needs a driver that translates those turns into
canonical PRP events and semantic results.
> - The driver must preserve terminal facts under backpressure and
retain cleanup ownership after caller-facing timeouts.
> - Abort can win after the host transfers a credential-bearing
admission but before the adapter body starts, so that boundary must
publish a completed cleanup proof without changing the exact
cancellation reason.
> - An external close can join an autonomous reconciliation attempt; if
it joins the exhausted final attempt, its batched intent must create one
new bounded generation when that exact cleanup fails.
> - A late cleanup failure needs a finite reconciliation budget that
cannot renew itself without a distinct external intent.
> - This pull request adds the Codex-only ACPX harness driver and the
package-local lifecycle rules it needs.
> - The benefit is a tested provider-neutral session boundary for later
runnerd and server integration.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12404

**Subsystem affected**

This change affects `packages/paperclip-runner`, the Codex ACPX driver,
and the provider-neutral native session runtime.

**Problem or motivation**

The package has an admitted Codex ACPX session, bounded turn control,
and authenticated semantic tools. It does not have a `HarnessDriver`
implementation that joins those parts and emits canonical PRP events. It
also needs bounded ownership for provider cleanup that settles after a
caller-facing timeout. Cancellation can win after the host schedules
runtime admission and transfers the staged credential but before the
adapter body starts; that rejected admission must still prove that
provider cleanup is complete so the credential can be scrubbed and later
admission can proceed. Separately, an external close that coalesces onto
an exhausted autonomous reconciliation must not lose its cleanup intent
if that exact protocol or provider-process cleanup fails.

**Proposed solution**

Add a Codex-only harness driver. It opens the admitted host, executes
one active turn, normalizes ACPX events, dispatches run-scoped tools,
and commits one schema-valid completion or blocked result. It provides
bounded event storage, interruption, transcripts, usage, snapshots,
diagnostics, and ordered close behavior. The native session runtime
quarantines incomplete cleanup before another session can enter the same
cleanup domain. The ACPX adapter records the immutable origin and
attempt number of each exact close attempt. Autonomous reconciliation
failures stay inside the three-attempt budget of the generation that
created them. External callers that join an attempt are represented by
one idempotent batched intent: success consumes it, failure on an
earlier attempt uses the remaining same-generation retries, and failure
on the exhausted final attempt creates exactly one new bounded
generation. Both direct and late protocol/provider cleanup outcomes use
the same rule. At the adapter entry boundary, an already-aborted
admission transfers an already-complete cleanup proof before rethrowing
the exact abort reason; the host retains credential cleanup until that
proof settles.

**Alternatives considered**

The multi-provider integration driver was not copied because it mixes
deferred providers and recovery behavior into the Codex path. Direct
server registration was also deferred because this package slice must
remain inactive and independently safe. Relabeling a coalesced
autonomous attempt as external was rejected because it would let
observers replenish retry budgets; starting another protocol close
before the exact retained attempt settles was rejected because it would
overlap cleanup ownership.

**Roadmap alignment**

This is package-local production hardening for the experimental runner.
It does not enable a new adapter or change current agent execution
selection.

## What Changed

- Add a Codex-only ACPX `HarnessDriver` and session implementation.
- Advertise only implemented capabilities. Keep resume, steering,
runtime request resolution, runtime request handoff, goals, and thread
lineage unavailable.
- Emit canonical PRP turn, transcript, tool execution, final reply,
result, failure, interruption, and usage facts.
- Dispatch authorized dynamic tools through the authenticated semantic
bridge.
- Validate and commit one completion or blocked result with disposition
and conflict checks.
- Add stable bounded event identities, one-active-turn admission,
terminal capacity reservation, and bounded interruption.
- Redact authorization credentials from emitted events and retained
transcripts.
- Add read, reconcile, transcript, usage, snapshot, status,
interruption, and ordered close surfaces.
- Retain and quarantine host cleanup that outlives a caller-facing close
bound.
- Gate new native-session admission on prior cleanup in the same cleanup
domain.
- Preserve durable success and governed waits while provider cleanup
continues under bounded ownership.
- Transfer a completed cleanup proof when cancellation wins before the
Codex adapter body, then preserve the caller's exact abort reason.
- Add a host-level regression proving staged credentials are scrubbed,
the credential lease can be reacquired, and a later runtime admission
succeeds after that pre-entry abort.
- Tag each exact ACPX close attempt with an immutable external or
reconciliation origin and immutable reconciliation attempt number.
- Keep timed-out autonomous reconciliation failures inside their
originating three-attempt budget.
- Batch concurrent external callers that join one reconciliation attempt
so they cannot mint independent generations.
- Consume a joined external intent on successful cleanup and on an
earlier failed attempt that still has same-generation retries.
- Renew exactly one bounded generation when a joined external intent
reaches a failed, exhausted final reconciliation attempt.
- Treat both protocol-close and provider-process cleanup failures as
failed intent settlement, including non-timeout and timed-out late
paths.
- Prevent a coalescing external observer from relabeling an immutable
autonomous attempt.
- Reset the finite reconciliation budget only for a distinct external
late-failure generation or one failed batched intent on an exhausted
final attempt.
- Isolate persistent-cleanup tests by cleanup domain and attach expected
rejection handlers before fake timers release them.
- Stabilize cleanup-settlement assertions exposed by GitHub Actions:
observe retained proofs without relying on callback order, wait for the
credential lease release rather than only the preceding credential-file
deletion, and use a supported scalar size assertion instead of an
unavailable Set matcher.
- Add focused tests for driver behavior, event validation, bounded
buffers, cleanup quarantine, admission gating, immutable attempt
origins, final-attempt intent batching, direct and late cleanup
failures, late success consumption, bounded reconciliation, exact
pre-entry cancellation, credential recovery, and durable native-session
outcomes.

## Risks

This change has medium package-local risk. It adds a new driver and
changes native-session cleanup coordination. A lagging event consumer
could otherwise lose terminal state. The driver reserves terminal
capacity and rejects new work when bounded storage cannot safely accept
it. A stalled, rejected, or late provider close could otherwise overlap
a new session, retain credentials indefinitely, lose an external cleanup
request, or consume unlimited retries. Cleanup-proof transfer keeps the
staged credential owned across the pre-entry abort race, while the host
scrubs it only after the adapter proves that no provider resource
exists. Cleanup quarantine blocks conflicting admission and keeps exact
attempts owned. Immutable attempt origins and attempt numbers prevent
autonomous retries and coalesced observers from silently replenishing
the cap. One batched external intent can renew one generation only after
the exhausted final attempt fails; earlier failures remain within the
original generation, and success consumes the intent. Each renewed
generation remains capped at three autonomous attempts. The driver
reports recovery and other unimplemented capabilities as unavailable. No
server or runnerd factory selects this driver in this pull request.

Dotta 3623a369aa feat(runner): bind semantic tools to ACPX sessions (#12404)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The runner package provides a provider-neutral execution boundary.
> - The admitted Codex ACPX runtime needs access to the run-scoped
semantic tool catalog.
> - The tool endpoint contains an authentication secret and must stay
outside durable session state.
> - ACPX permission requests must follow the same run policy as semantic
tool authorization.
> - The deny-all mode must reject every request, including requests for
runner-owned MCP tools.
> - This pull request composes the authenticated loopback bridge into
the admitted Codex runtime.
> - The benefit is a closed tool catalog with fail-closed permissions
and bounded cleanup.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12403

**Subsystem affected**

This change affects `packages/paperclip-runner` and its package-local
Codex ACPX runtime boundary.

**Problem or motivation**

The package has an authenticated semantic MCP bridge and an admitted
Codex ACPX session. The two components are not connected. A direct
connection must not persist the bridge token. It must not allow
unrelated MCP operations. The deny-all mode must remain closed for
runner-owned MCP requests.

**Proposed solution**

The runtime host starts one loopback bridge when semantic tools are
configured. It passes an ephemeral bearer binding to ACPX. The adapter
projects that binding into the ACP runtime configuration. It sends each
permission request through the existing ACPX permission policy. The
deny-all mode rejects every request. Other requests either receive the
policy result or delegate to an available coordinator.

**Alternatives considered**

Persisting MCP configuration with the ACPX session was rejected because
it would retain authentication material. A global MCP endpoint was
rejected because it would weaken run isolation.

**Roadmap alignment**

This is package-local hardening for the existing experimental runner
work. It does not enable a new user-facing adapter.

## What Changed

- Start and own one authenticated semantic MCP bridge when a host
receives semantic tool options.
- Pass one ephemeral loopback MCP binding to the Codex ACPX adapter.
- Keep the bridge token out of the persisted environment and ACPX
session options.
- Map the runner-owned HTTP MCP binding into ACPX runtime configuration
with a bearer header.
- Apply the existing ACPX permission policy to runtime permission
requests.
- Keep the deny-all mode closed for runner-owned MCP requests.
- Delegate only the permission decisions that require a coordinator.
- Revoke the tool bridge after the runtime close attempt settles,
including when runtime close fails.
- Release staged credentials only after the exact runtime close
succeeds.
- Add focused host and adapter tests for bridge dispatch, secret
isolation, fail-closed permissions, delegation, and cleanup.

- Greptile: **5/5** for the exact head with no open P2s,

## Risks

The main risk is secret or permission leakage at the ACP boundary. The
host passes the bearer token only in ephemeral runtime configuration. It
does not put the token in the persisted environment or ACPX session
options. The existing permission policy controls every ACPX permission
request. The deny-all mode rejects runner-owned MCP requests too.
Another risk is partial cleanup. The host revokes the tool bridge after
the runtime close attempt settles. It retains staged credentials if the
exact runtime close fails. This pull request stays inside the runner
package and does not select the experimental runner in the server.

Dotta 57449579ca feat(runner): add bounded ACPX turn lifecycle (#12403)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The admitted Codex ACPX runtime can open and recover a verified
session.
> - It cannot yet accept a provider prompt through the narrow host port.
> - Turn admission must bound durable identity and prompt payloads.
> - Shutdown must cancel an active turn and release runtime resources in
a bounded way.
> - A cancellation timeout must not leave the runtime, command lease, or
staged credentials alive indefinitely.
> - This pull request adds the package-local turn lifecycle and its
cleanup rules without production wiring.
> - The benefit is one explicit and testable prompt boundary for the
later harness driver.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

Refs #12402

**What would you like to improve?**

The package-local ACPX host stops at session admission. A later driver
needs to submit a prompt, consume typed ACP events, wait for the
terminal result, cancel work, and close the session. Passing the full
third-party runtime through the host would bypass the existing trust and
cleanup boundary.

**Why is this important?**

Provider prompts can be large. Turn identifiers participate in durable
correlation. Concurrent turns can make replay and cancellation
ambiguous. Shutdown must also stop an active prompt before credentials
and verified command resources are released. A provider that does not
finish cancellation must not block all remaining cleanup indefinitely.

**Suggested approach**

Add a minimal turn interface to the admitted runtime port. Accept one
prompt turn at a time. Bound the request identity and text before the
runtime sees them. Map the call to ACPX prompt mode with the admitted
session handle. Track the active turn and request cancellation before
ordered runtime cleanup. Bound the cancellation wait. Continue runtime
and command cleanup after that timeout. Release staged credentials only
after the exact runtime close succeeds.

**Additional context**

This pull request builds on #12402. It does not attach semantic tools,
normalize provider events, create a harness driver, start runnerd,
register production execution, or change server, UI, or direct-adapter
behavior.

## What Changed

- Add a narrow ACPX turn input and result and event lifecycle to the
admitted runtime port.
- Map prompt turns to the exact persistent ACPX session handle.
- Support abort signals without adding steering or attachments.
- Reject empty, whitespace-normalized, or oversized request identities.
- Reject prompt text larger than one MiB before third-party code
executes.
- Permit only one active turn per host.
- Clear the active turn only after the canonical ACPX result settles.
- Reject new turns as soon as shutdown starts.
- Cancel an active turn before runtime, credential, and command cleanup.
- Bound the cancellation wait to two seconds.
- Continue runtime and command cleanup when turn cancellation fails or
reaches its timeout.
- Release staged credentials only after the exact runtime close
succeeds.
- Keep the cancellation handle and credential lease when runtime cleanup
remains retryable.
- Coalesce concurrent close calls and report all cleanup failures in one
aggregate error.
- Add focused host and adapter tests for turn mapping, bounds,
concurrency, cancellation, timeout cleanup, credential retention, and
late-turn rejection.

all test shards, canary, and e2e; Storybook skipped by path as expected.
- Greptile is 5/5 on the exact corrected head with no blocking failure
and zero unresolved review threads.
- Superagent Security, Snyk, contributor trust, and commitperclip passed
on the exact corrected head.
- No local test result is claimed. GitHub Actions is the authoritative
verification environment for this revision.

## Risks

The primary risk is ambiguous concurrent execution. The host admits only
one active turn and releases that slot from the canonical ACPX terminal
result. Another risk is partial shutdown. The host requests cancellation
first and waits for at most two seconds. It then attempts runtime and
command cleanup even if cancellation fails or reaches the timeout. It
releases staged credentials only after the exact runtime close succeeds.
If runtime cleanup fails, the host keeps the cancellation handle and
credentials for a later cleanup attempt. This pull request does not
register the runtime for production use.

Dotta db52ec0ca0 feat(runner): adapt the pinned Codex ACPX runtime (#12401)
## Thinking Path

> - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for
work.
> - The runner admits a verified Codex ACPX profile before any provider
process can start.
> - The pinned ACPX library needs a narrow adapter to the admitted
runtime host.
> - That adapter must keep credentials and launch controls out of
durable session records.
> - It must preserve exact recovery identity, model controls, and
ownership of the complete provider process tree.
> - This pull request adds the Codex-only package adapter without
registering production execution.

## Linked Issues or Issue Description

**Agent or provider**

Codex through the exact ACPX and Codex ACP packages landed in #12400.

**Why this adapter is useful**

The package-local runtime host has an injected port, but no production
implementation. This implementation uses the verified executable lease
and private runtime sandbox without persisting managed credentials or
other launch-only state in ACPX recovery records.

**How the agent is invoked**

The adapter creates one persistent ACPX Codex session. ACPX receives a
placeholder registry command, while its patched spawn callback launches
through Paperclip's verified command lease. The private launch
environment is supplied only at spawn time. Durable session state
receives only the session key, workspace, model, and bounded system
instructions.

**Additional context**

#12400 is merged. This PR does not register an adapter, start runnerd,
expose a server route, or change any direct adapter. It supports Codex
only, rejects non-Codex profiles, and fails closed on Windows until
provider descendants can be contained with an owned Job Object or
equivalent.

## What Changed

- Add a Codex-only adapter from the pinned ACPX library to the admitted
runtime port.
- Create the ACPX store inside the private runtime state directory.
- Open one persistent session with the qualified model and bounded
system instructions.
- Route provider launches through the verified executable lease and a
dedicated POSIX process group.
- Retain cleanup ownership through asynchronous errors and late
termination.
- Supply the private launch environment at spawn time without persisting
it.
- Require all ACPX recovery identity fields before returning the runtime
port.
- Map status, exact model selection, and state-preserving close
operations.
- Add regression coverage for secret isolation, verified spawning,
process-tree cleanup, lifecycle mapping, identity failure, and the
Codex-only boundary.

## Verification

- Exact verified head: `dc89439d0b2e3dee46d212715caeefc8ae0c0959`.
- Full GitHub PR workflow passed in [run 33341468207, attempt
3](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/33341468207/attempts/3),
including runner verification/build, typecheck, all test shards, canary,
and e2e.
- Greptile is 5/5 on the exact head with zero unresolved review threads.
- Superagent Security, Snyk, contributor trust, and commitperclip passed
on the exact head.
- Storybook skipped by path as expected.
- The diff contains 2 files and does not change `pnpm-lock.yaml`,
workflows, migrations, server selection, or UI behavior.
- No additional local suite was run during the final restack; GitHub
Actions is the authoritative verification environment.

## Risks

The primary risk is leaking launch credentials into durable ACPX state.
Session options are constructed explicitly and regression-tested; the
launch environment remains behind the spawn-time callback. Another risk
is orphaning credential-bearing descendants. Supported launches use a
retained POSIX process-group identity with bounded TERM-to-KILL cleanup.
Windows fails closed before runtime construction until equivalent
process-tree containment exists.
