Bound native OpenCode assigned-tool catalog projection (#17740)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Native agents use assigned connection tools through a governed gateway. > - OpenCode received the gateway catalog directly, outside the bounded server tool projection. > - A large catalog can exceed a provider grammar compiler's capacity even when it fits the transport limits. > - Synthetic requests reproduced the Fireworks grammar timeout on the configured DeepSeek model. > - This pull request gives OpenCode two assigned-tool discovery and call schemas through the existing server relay. > - The gateway keeps the same grants, validation, approvals, revocation, and audit rules. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A native OpenCode run could fail during provider grammar compilation before its first assigned-tool call. OpenCode advertised the full assigned gateway catalog. A synthetic catalog of 741 tool schemas reproduced `Grammar processing took too much time` on Fireworks through OpenRouter with `deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash-1017`. The same model and backend accepted a compact two-tool discovery/call catalog. This reproduces the mechanism; it does not replay a historical private request. **Expected behavior** Assigned-tool discovery must keep provider grammar size bounded. Every call must retain the run's original gateway binding and permissions. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Give a native OpenCode run a large assigned connection catalog. 2. Use a provider that compiles tool schemas into a constrained output grammar. 3. Observe the full catalog in the provider tool surface before this change. 4. After this change, observe only `paperclip_search_assigned_tools` and `paperclip_call_assigned_tool` for assigned tools. Discover and call a permitted tool through its pinned alias. **Paperclip version or commit** Source checkout based on current `master`. **Deployment mode** Native local or sandbox execution with OpenCode 1.18.34. Related work: Refs #14258 (discovery paging), #16678 (local adapter MCP launch), and #17688 (gateway capability advertisement). This change covers native OpenCode catalog projection. ## What Changed - Route native OpenCode assigned tools through the existing server-owned authenticated relay. - Use bounded discovery/call schemas for OpenCode, including small catalogs. Preserve transport capacity checks. - Keep assigned gateway credentials on the controller. Ignore gateway and credential values in tool arguments. - Preserve exact declared MCP operation names through admission and driver dispatch. Resolve transport prefixes only against the closed catalog. Reject unknown or shortened names. - Refresh former OpenCode direct-catalog and shortened-name checkpoints. Keep the existing fingerprints for other providers. - Add local and remote wiring, catalog capacity, alias, scope, work-mode, approval, and revocation tests. - Allow the native test files to use a validated dedicated external test database when embedded PostgreSQL is unavailable. - Document the assigned-tool execution contract. - Bound OpenCode discovery pages to 32 KiB and large-schema chunks to 16K characters. Keep other harness budgets unchanged. - Test medium pages and escaped large schemas through the actual HTTP MCP bridge on the explicit Runner testing surface. ## Verification - Red before the catalog fix: OpenCode did not create the server relay, and forced compact delivery advertised 1 or 741 direct schemas. - Red before the alias repair: HTTP MCP changed declared operation names, and the driver sent `search_assigned_tools` instead of the authorized `paperclip_search_assigned_tools`. - Current repair tests: 112 OpenCode/proxy tests pass, plus one actual Rust/proxy/HTTP MCP regression. Two checkpoint regressions fail with the former scoped revision and pass with the new revision. Other providers keep their prior fingerprints. - The combined QA candidate with this exact PR head passes all 916 native tests and all 113 transport tests on supported Node 24.22. An earlier Node 26.4/macOS run passed the 113 assertions but had an uncaught networking error. That non-clean run remains recorded; its stack matches [the upstream Undici defect](https://github.com/nodejs/undici/issues/5544). No production workaround or error suppression was added. - `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm build`, and `git diff --check` pass on `bc41ba72be2195eabeb0d7727227ee0cd02e8532`. The maps structural check passes. - The local `pnpm test:run` attempt stopped after host embedded PostgreSQL initialization failures. The relevant database suites pass with isolated PostgreSQL 18. All repository CI gates, including aggregate `ci / verify`, pass on the current head. - Synthetic live provider comparison: 741 invented schemas produced the exact Fireworks grammar timeout in 20.9 seconds. Two compact invented schemas produced a discovery call in 585 ms on the same model and backend. - The first hosted QA attempt exposed the alias failure described above. On the patched source, a real local Rust runner → proxy → OpenCode 1.18.34 → exact DeepSeek smoke completed discovery, one synthetic gateway read, and `paperclip_finish`, then emitted `turn/completed`. It used the production compact projection and unchanged Rust allowlist. - Two earlier local smoke attempts exposed missing terminal authority and completion-contract fields in the smoke harness. Those failures remain recorded. The corrected ordinary bindings produced the clean result. - Fresh Greptile: 5/5 on `bc41ba72be2195eabeb0d7727227ee0cd02e8532`, with no new actionable findings or unresolved threads. - Hosted QA publication and lifecycle acceptance remain pending. The separate deployed-agent `Paperclip Review` check is also pending; it follows a task that failed on the earlier deployed runtime. - Local OpenCode/OpenRouter acceptance at `bc41ba72`: 530 synthetic tools were authorized and installed. A simple model-ID reply completed in 17.3 seconds with no app calls. A discovery task completed in 37.6 seconds, used the search/call relay, made one upstream call, and returned the exact synthetic value. This is local source acceptance, not a staging sandbox timing comparison. - The large-result review finding has a failing-before/passing-after HTTP MCP regression. Five medium schemas now page without invalid JSON. A large schema with escaped text reconstructs exactly through bounded chunks. All 35 assigned-tool tests and the server typecheck pass after this follow-up. - Final head `d84ce4856a6e65a35ad5fb8b561492598b525f4e`: all CI gates pass. Greptile and Paperclip Review both rate the change 5/5. No review threads remain open. The final full build, server typecheck, and 35 assigned-tool tests pass locally. ## Risks - OpenCode uses discovery before it calls an assigned tool, including for small catalogs. This can add a model turn. - An existing OpenCode provider checkpoint rotates once because it retains the former tool declarations. Paperclip task history remains available. - The historical filtered catalog was not captured. The synthetic comparison proves the failure mechanism, not the exact cardinality of an earlier private request. - No model, provider route, permission, or automatic retry policy changes. ## Model Used The bounded-result follow-up also used OpenAI Codex (GPT-6 family). The exact backend model ID and context-window size were not exposed for that session. It used reasoning, code execution, and tool use. OpenAI `gpt-6.1-sol` in Codex, with reasoning, tool use, code execution, and source inspection. The runtime does not expose the context-window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(github): reuse review instructions across native turns (#16971)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - GitHub events continue an ordinary task and can reuse its provider conversation. > - Each automatic event appended the full review policy and PR description. > - Native GitHub follow-ups also repeated task history because only Slack used the compact path. > - This pull request separates admitted review configuration from commit updates. > - A verified resume sends the current messages and changed configuration. A fresh session gets full context. > - This reduces repeated input while retaining review rules and current tool checks. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #13959, #16645, #16901. **What happened?** Opening a PR and pushing twice stored three full review prompts. A later native turn repeated all three in a retained provider conversation. **Expected behavior** A new event supplies its commit and event data. The harness delivers stable review instructions once per retained conversation and configuration. Fresh sessions receive full instructions. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Enable automatic GitHub reviews for a repository. 2. Open a PR, let the review finish, and push two new commits. 3. Inspect task messages and the native submitted envelopes. Before this fix, the policy and old requests repeat. ## What Changed - Store compact automatic event messages. Fetch the PR description through the existing metadata tool when needed. - Load review instructions from processed deliveries bound to the company, task, agent, and source comments. Preserve each admitted policy snapshot. - Use the existing verified native continuation path for complete GitHub text batches. Deliver configuration changes using a key over endpoint, PR conversation, revision, and instructions. - Keep full bootstrap input for fresh sessions and failed resume, including board follow-ups with no new GitHub event. Retain existing framing for incomplete batches, attachments, interactions, and recovery. - Keep the same configuration identity across automatic review, discussion, and automatic review. Coalesced requests use the last accepted request's admitted policy. - Add regression and database coverage. Update the execution contract and verification recipe. ## Verification - Red: the new event-size regression failed because policy and PR body repeated. The GitHub continuation regression failed because it returned no compact prompt. - Green: focused policy, continuation, native input, and adapter prompt tests passed (231 tests). Native resume/fresh-bootstrap cases passed (9 tests). - The signed-webhook/database case passed at `6296168253`. It checks configuration edits, queued older snapshots, coalesced policy selection, discussion continuity, board follow-ups, and company/task/agent/comment boundaries. The private PostgreSQL template used 12 connections because the host reached its semaphore limit with the default settings. - The earlier broad channel/session integration run passed 1,432 tests. Later review fixes invalidated that run. The latest focused database case passed after those fixes. - Reviewer regressions failed against the previous lookup, then passed with the fix: a mixed-revision batch delivered multiple policies, and a discussion lost the configuration identity. The board wake-to-rendered-prompt regression also failed before repair. - `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm build`, `node scripts/check-maps.mjs`, and `git diff --check` passed on the final source. - Full local `pnpm test:run` exposed follow-up/fixture failures during development. Those cases are fixed and pass separately. The stale run was stopped after source edits. Full-suite validation for the final commit passed in CI. - All required CI checks passed for `6296168253`, including tests, typechecks, build, and clean public npm install checks. The two unrelated Storybook checks were skipped. - A live two-turn Codex smoke could not start: the local macOS sandbox helper rejected execution of the installed Codex 0.153.4 binary. No live GitHub/provider acceptance or deployment is claimed. ## Risks Skipping instructions is safe only after a verified checkpoint resume with the correct previous run. The full bootstrap remains available if resume fails. Changed or previously unknown configuration is sent again. Tests cover these cases. Tool authorization and publication checks still run under the current server policy. No database migration is required. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with tool use and code execution. The exact deployment model identifier and context window are not exposed in this session. No delegated agents were used.

Connect and configure GitHub Copilot through Apps (#15705)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Apps and AI Connections store credentials and govern access to agent runtimes. > - Users need a supported saved-token connection and config values that survive save and reopen. > - The release must preserve saved-token access and task lifecycle guarantees. > - This pull request will connect Copilot through the normal Apps and AI Connections path. > - The benefit is a reviewable part of the Copilot production release. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15701 and #15703. Supersedes setup work in #15562. Base: #15703. Next: #15706. ## What Changed - Require configuration update authority before Copilot credential-bearing model discovery; default to the saved environment and preserve explicit selection for editors. - Keep Copilot discovery passive during reconnect reconciliation; refresh on explicit opening, account/environment changes and reconnect. - Add GitHub AI token connections with encrypted storage, ownership, grants and audit logging. - Keep repository access separate from Copilot runtime authentication. - Probe the selected environment without sending a model prompt and preserve authenticated model selection through save/reopen. - Keep fresh execution admission consistent with normal Copilot setup; persist task model choices without changing provider or permission policy. - Refresh authenticated models after reconnecting the same saved Copilot account, including recovery from a previous authentication error. - Apply the additive provider-default constraint migration through the normal generated migration workflow. ## Verification Runtime #15701 is merged at `d855e550ad8d2a267312983f26457aabf5393c3a`. History #15703 is merged at `df80616d98119cbf5abd40549794d9980a5fabf6`. Remaining source [`42bcbd61299655f7e37aabe6bb5f19bba770ad1d`](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/commit/42bcbd61299655f7e37aabe6bb5f19bba770ad1d) contains the four-file authorization repair. The remaining PR trees preserve six nonoverlapping files from the newer public mainline managed-settings fix and the CI-owned lockfile. No unrelated provider is enabled. The security finding is repaired: existing-agent discovery requires `agent_config:update` before connection selection or token resolution. The saved environment is the default. Authorized editors can select a prospective environment. Both denied board-viewer and agent-reader regressions fail on the original source. All49 route tests and server typecheck pass with the fix. Denied requests perform no connection selection, credential resolution or probe. Current-head security scans pass on both remaining PRs; the repaired thread is resolved. Copilot CLI1.0.88 and profile47 retain digest `sha256:55044aa235e88b3fe36ec8a556ee1e3382590870aab907e4462ef7d64af49cea`. The [qualification record](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/42bcbd61299655f7e37aabe6bb5f19bba770ad1d/doc/plans/2026-10-20-copilot-qualification-v47.json) reports20/20 Product cells,154 assertions and7/7 protocol cases,46 assertions against frozen normal installed source `c2616370800f5f6df45246b0890ba35a7cd2faab`. The exact qualification model is `gpt-5.6-luna`. Every passing Product case confirms cleanup. Original failures remain recorded; automatic behavior retries are disabled. The route-only authorization repair changes no bound runtime/profile bytes and does not relabel the frozen campaign. The ordinary installed remote journey passed saved-token selection, model discovery, normal UI save/reopen, metadata-only Test, completed task, accepted receipt and exact19-byte browser download. An open model catalog caused no additional discovery requests during117seconds. Actual installed runtime smokes passed on macOS ARM64, macOS x64 under Rosetta and native Linux x64 on Daytona. Raw token browser entry was not exercised; encrypted connection creation used the normal API. The first Daytona file attempt timed out during delayed semantic dispatch; its precise stalled layer remains unresolved. Independent ordinary remote delivery and the other19 Product cells passed before one instrumented recheck passed8/8 with unchanged source, prompt, assertions and deadlines. No causal latency repair is claimed. Before the authorization repair, all four final PR heads passed required verify/E2E and fresh Greptile5/5 reviews with zero unresolved threads. Current-head CI/review is running for the two repaired heads. Local focused checks retain129 connection,59 runner,72 shared-eval and88 recovery/workspace passes, plus migration safety and token gates. The additive Copilot migration is361; released master history is preserved. [Cloud normal-package run39414239704](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39414239704) builds the pre-security source4f3f. All four native producers and Linux package assembly pass; the final clean installed consumers are finishing. All18 retained archives match their hashes;37,863 regular files contain zero selected credentials. That package does not contain the later route repair. The actual final published package must include it and pass the local/Daytona live canaries. The frozen Daytona image remains published and independently verified. No separate full-image scan is claimed. Docker builds run in the cloud. **Remaining:** current-head CI/review, setup and qualification merges, final publication, and ordinary local/Daytona canaries against the actual shipped package. The user explicitly authorizes the maintainer review override; CI remains a merge gate. No production deployment is claimed. Provider USD remains unknown and GitHub-attributed. ## Risks Bad credentials, missing entitlement, runtime installation and unavailable models must remain distinct failures. A connection must not adopt ambient credentials. The constraint migration changes accepted provider values, with no credential-storage migration. Current-master NewAgent fixture extraction is retained. Copilot cases use that shared support and test both passive discovery and explicit reconnect under the same setup lifecycle. The onboarding retry regression shares the component suite’s saved-connection, authenticated-model, draft, agent-list, hire and render lifecycle fixtures. Keeping it beside the existing onboarding failures makes adoption versus duplicate hire observable under the same lifecycle; this is the concrete cohesion reason for the existing large test file. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. The exact serving model ID and context window are not exposed in this task. Used for code changes, review and tool-assisted verification. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Trace execution preparation and durable response persistence (#16419)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The server prepares an execution environment before it starts an agent. > - Operators need to distinguish preparation, provider wait, and response persistence. > - Existing preparation phases start separate traces, and the native session trace ends before the final response is saved. > - This pull request adds an execution-attempt trace and detailed spans at the existing work boundaries. > - The benefit is a measurable startup and settlement path without changing execution policy. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** Operator-configured OpenTelemetry tracing for agent preparation, startup, and durable response storage. **Subsystem affected** Server orchestration, native Runner startup, and the Honeycomb run link. **Current behavior** Preparation phases start independent roots. Workspace lock waits, authorization groups, runtime asset work, provider-pack fallback, and the gap after provider completion are hard to attribute. **Proposed behavior** Use a server-owned async context for each execution attempt. Parent nested work to that attempt. Link the separately sampled native session because its ingress and queue history can begin earlier. Record transaction entry, lock waits, grouped authorization, asset preparation, artifact fallback, copyback, and response commit. **Reason and benefit** Operators can identify expensive work from recorded boundaries instead of inferring the cause from elapsed time. Nested and concurrent durations remain visible and must not be added together. **Breaking changes** No API or execution-policy change. New Observability span names and closed count attributes are documented. The existing local run-performance schema also records the additional provider-pack and harness measurements. Refs: #16178, #16205, #16330. ## What Changed - Add `task.execution_attempt` with same-run async ownership, independent root sampling, and native-session links. - Measure workspace transaction entry and settlement, advisory and row waits, source scans, reader groups, notifications, and writes. - Measure runtime selection and each concurrent instructions, skills, and MCP branch. Separate manifest, cache, materialization, and verification work. - Measure provider-pack discovery, verified reuse or upload, final verification, and remote harness state checks. - Measure workspace settlement, accounting, liveness, response authorization, comment commit, and publication enqueue. - Preserve the silent endpoint-off path, including when another library has registered a tracer. Bound repeated detail spans to 16 per name per attempt. - Extend the Honeycomb run link and document the actual coverage and remaining gaps. ## Verification - After resolving the conflict with retained-reader batching on `b98cdaea531c8447637cd4dcc19c61b3f5f41844`, all 61 targeted query, authorization, workspace-preparation and trace-boundary tests passed. The server typecheck passed. Reader tests still bound query count, avoid loading retained run payloads and enforce fresh project grants on every publication attempt. - Before that base integration, the tracing/exporter group passed 855 tests with 2 optional-SDK skips across 10 files and no inherited OTLP endpoint. It covers real PostgreSQL waits/rollback, durable response commit, assembled heartbeat preparation, concurrent parentage, sampling and tracer failure isolation. Native workspace/history tests passed 23 cases. These results remain supporting evidence for the unchanged tracing paths. - Full workspace typecheck and build passed during implementation. Full sharded CI, release validation, E2E and Apex 5/5 passed on prior head `8cebad80f3856dbcff6f3a6d5d34880ff77a20f2`. Fresh CI, security and Apex review are required on the current head before merge. - `pnpm check:token-gates` passed. No styles changed. - Earlier CI runs exposed exact-source-expression assertions changed by wrappers, missing run hashes on transaction-boundary spans, and sampling fixtures without an enabled endpoint. The fixes preserve the calls, add the declared hash and span cap, and enable tracing explicitly in the sampling fixtures. Focused repairs passed; the full prior-head CI passed after those repairs. Earlier failed run: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38729131366. - The full local `pnpm test:run` was stopped after the base advanced during that process. Its mixed-version results are not final-head evidence. A full local-suite pass is not claimed. - The old-head Superagent scan stalled at 35%. The current head has a fresh scan; no security pass is inferred from the old pending result. - No deployed Honeycomb acceptance is claimed by this code change. ## Risks - Enabled tracing creates more spans. Repeated detail spans are bounded, and inventories use group spans. - The attempt and native session remain linked traces. Historical queue time can precede the attempt, and nested intervals overlap. - A committed comment proves durable server storage. Publication enqueue and realtime dispatch do not prove external delivery or browser paint. - New custom attributes use only the existing run hash and validated file/byte counts. No SQL, paths, permissions, content, or exception text is added. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. The serving model ID and context window size are not exposed in this session. The agent used reasoning, tools, code editing, and code execution.

Stabilize task lifecycle browser fixtures (#15878)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agents and their tasks. > - Browser and runner tests check task recovery and user actions. > - Some fixtures act before a prior request or run has settled. > - Those races can report a product failure before the intended assertion runs. > - This PR binds each check to the exact request, run, or geometry snapshot it needs. > - The tests retain their existing budgets and negative assertions. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs: #15813, #15804. The draft stack is master → [fixture prerequisite #15878](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/15878) → [runtime prerequisite #15880](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/15880) → [Boat core #15813](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/15813) → [UI #15804](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/15804). GitHub confirms 5, 63, 97, and 75 changed files respectively, each below the 100-file limit. Existing commits and PR URLs remain intact. [Historical evidence](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/tree/5909bfac9fa41405beb3fe8a65253dc28ba52835/doc/plans/assets/2026-10-10-boat) remains pinned to its original commit; current proof files stay with the UI PR. This is the test-only prerequisite extracted from the experimental Boat work. It contains five existing test-file changes. It does not add the Boat adapter or change task admission. ## What Changed - Wait for the exact signoff fixture run and each replacement run to succeed before applying the next stage decision. - Wait for the inbox Retry response for the exact failed run before navigating away. - Compare task planning time with the first run that actually started, instead of assuming the first list item started. - Read the touch target, container, and scroll position in one browser evaluation. Keep strict containment and native gesture checks. - Bind the native recovery fixture to its disposable fake Codex executable so installed provider binaries cannot override it. ## Verification Draft branch: `codex/boat-fixture-prerequisite`, commit `e318850909c0777565b43644a4d8114c6006da60`. Base: master `e733bddc45e00efb1819fffa8677f7b0d07802c5`. Five changed files. The isolated fixture-plus-runtime stack passed 24 browser cases. Six legacy recovery cases could not reach their assertions because the fixture requires embedded PostgreSQL metadata. A normal embedded PostgreSQL attempt then failed during cluster setup on this host. These are not six passing cases. No test seam, timeout increase, or product-database fixture was used. The fixture-only commit has not yet had a separate complete local browser run. All six legacy cases subsequently passed on this exact fixture commit in PR CI browser shard 8 (20/20 total, job114470999277). The original local setup failures remain recorded. The full-stack typecheck/build results belong to the assembled fixture-plus-runtime tree and are not claimed as independent qualification of this smaller commit. Review the exact run/request filters and the unchanged rejection assertions. Run the four changed Playwright specs and the native-session-resume suite through the repository's normal fixture setup. At 13:03:24 UTC, this exact head had 53 successful checks and two skips, with no pending checks or failures. All eight browser shards passed. Greptile is 5/5 on the exact head with no unresolved threads. [Exact-head legacy browser proof](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/9eacca2c5321bb63f061eef4bb775b6951d5846d/doc/plans/assets/2026-10-10-boat/evidence/prerequisite-legacy-browser-ci-proof.json). Feature acceptance stays in the downstream report. Deployment29 verified `05f3725af838b5a074707df1d6ed1e193bdfe49e` at 12:23:23.944 UTC. Native Claude cold execution passed at 12:39:57.782 after 14m56s of first-use preparation. Warm continuation passed at 12:42:09.943 with the same owner, boot and session identities. Normal retirement and archive followed. The ordinary saved post-idle turn then failed: its primary attempt reported the closed `LINK_COUNT` module fence at `turn_ownership_verified` (3,711ms), and same-run recovery settled failed at 12:52:09 with identity/authority errors. Natural archive completed at 12:52:21. Numeric link counts and their direction are not yet proven. A narrower failure-only diagnostic and a bounded read-only probe are under review; neither establishes a fix for this live failure. Prior staging27/28 failures remain preserved. Local complete lifecycle passes and staging Codex/computer/HMR passes remain separate source-bound evidence. No session, quarantine, provider stop or migration history was reset. These live observations do not qualify this prerequisite by themselves. ## Risks - Waiting for the wrong run could hide a task race. The fixtures match task, agent, and replacement-run identity before proceeding. - A geometry helper could weaken touch coverage. This change preserves containment and gesture assertions and only makes their inputs one snapshot. - The six legacy browser cases passed in exact-head CI; their local PostgreSQL setup limitation remains recorded. No live Boat acceptance result follows from this test-only change. Documentation impact: no product command or behavior changes. This description records fixture scope and validation limits. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex (GPT-6 family) assisted with code, test execution, and review. The host does not expose the exact primary model ID or context window. The work used tools for source inspection and local execution. Prior architecture work used `gpt-6-astra`; an independent design review used `gpt-6.1-sol`. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal issue id or instance-derived details - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

refactor(server): extract heartbeat runtime selection (#15746)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Heartbeat execution prepares a runtime, dispatches work, and records the result. > - Earlier refactors separated workspace services, scheduling, and completion. > - The executor still builds native inputs and records runtime selection inline. > - This preparation must preserve admitted inputs and serialize with Stop. > - This pull request moves that phase into a typed runtime-selection module. > - Reviewers can inspect runtime preparation separately from dispatch and cleanup. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs: #15732. **What existing behavior does this improve?** Maintainability of heartbeat runtime preparation and selection. **Subsystem affected** server/ — orchestration services. **Current behavior** The main heartbeat service has 8,128 lines. `executeRun` builds or restores native inputs, selects sessions and sandbox lifecycle, and records native or legacy selection inline. **Proposed behavior** Move this phase into `server/src/services/heartbeat/runtime-selection.ts`. The executor calls `selectHeartbeatRuntime` at the existing boundary and receives an explicit selection result. The main file becomes 7,275 lines, a reduction of 853 lines. **Reason and benefit** This gives runtime selection its own typed boundary and direct tests. It preserves existing decisions, database transactions, and cleanup ordering. **Breaking changes** None intended. All public heartbeat exports remain available. ## What Changed - Move native input assembly, completion contract selection, checkpoint lookup, runtime persistence, and native workspace-sync preparation into `selectHeartbeatRuntime`. - Preserve the row lock and controller lease check that serialize native selection with cancellation. - Report lifecycle and ownership changes to the executor immediately, including when a later preparation step throws. - Move sandbox lifecycle and model fallback helpers with compatible public re-exports. - Add 12 database-backed boundary tests. Update the existing session-recovery source test and developer guide. ## Verification - Structural AST comparison against current `master` confirms the 784-line selection block, moved helpers, and remaining service bodies are unchanged after normalizing boundary callbacks. All 140 public exports are preserved. - On final head `2eddaa485f`, all 12 new database-backed tests and 83 existing lifecycle, selection, fallback-warning, and session regression tests pass (95 total). - Five executor integration cases passed before the rebase. Their final-head rerun could not start because the local checkout was removed during verification; no assertions ran in that last attempt. - `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` both pass on final head. - Local verification limitations: the full `pnpm test:run` was attempted, then stopped after database/process startup timeouts in concurrent local runs. Two unchanged optional real-runner session cases timed out on the initial run and one isolated retry; they were excluded from the 95-test focused run. CI also skips those two binary-dependent cases. - All CI gates pass on final head `2eddaa485f`: typecheck, build, general and serialized tests, runner checks, E2E, and canary dry run. - Greptile reviewed final head at 5/5 with no actionable findings. ## Risks This boundary controls native admission and cleanup ownership. Losing an update after a later exception could change resource cleanup. Immediate callbacks preserve those updates. Tests cover Stop races, lost controller leases, immutable admitted inputs, competing runtime selection, and workspace-sync failures. The change adds no schema or API behavior. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with reasoning, code editing, and command execution. The session does not expose the exact model variant or context window size. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass (95 focused tests on final head; broader local limitations documented above) - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(connections): simplify dedicated GitHub App setup (#15416)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agent work and the tools each agent can use. > - GitHub bots need their own App identity and restricted repository access. > - Manual App configuration and repeated setup gates make that connection hard to finish. > - GitHub can create an App from a manifest, but people must approve creation and repository access. > - Each Paperclip stack should own configuration, credentials, signature verification, and task admission. > - This change uses Cloud as an encrypted callback and event gateway, then completes setup in the stack. > - GitHub review bots have their own experimental setting. Chat connector opt-in does not control them. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** Dedicated GitHub App setup, bot settings, and task-scoped GitHub replies. **Current behavior** Users must configure an App, copy credentials, repeat repository selection, and complete manual verification gates. Review settings are hard to scan. Mentions in descriptions can be missed, and automatic completion text can produce an extra GitHub comment. **Proposed behavior** Choose an agent and connect GitHub under a personal account or organization. GitHub asks for creation and installation consent. Paperclip resumes the same draft, stores secrets locally, imports access, verifies delivery, and opens Settings. Each accepted request has one editable App-owned comment for progress and results. Review assessments produce deterministic checks for the reviewed commit. **Breaking changes** GitHub bots require their own default-off experimental opt-in. The setup-method and delegated-agent screens are removed. Per-person automatic-run flags remain readable but are replaced by author filters. Existing connections, direct webhooks, saved restrictions, and manual existing-App recovery remain supported. Companion gateway: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip-cloud/pull/688 (merged). The roadmap and related PRs were checked; no duplicate dedicated-App wizard was found. ## What Changed - Add an independent **GitHub review bots** setting across the catalog, routes, identity admission, and task controls. Existing bots continue running when the UI setting is off. - Replace setup with Choose agent and Connect GitHub. Support personal and organization owners, inline low-trust conversion, saved drafts, known organization suggestions, automatic completion, and same-App recovery. - Keep manifests, OAuth PKCE, credential exchange, vault storage, installation verification, and original webhook-signature validation in the stack. Use the Cloud sealed gateway for public callbacks and outbound local delivery. - Add resumable owner metadata in migration 0323. Retry a failed registration renewal through the same durable replacement rather than creating another App route. - Support authorized mentions in issue and PR bodies, comments, inline comments, and review summaries. Preserve attachments, edited-source identity, duplicate protection, and lifecycle invalidation. Filter requests explicitly addressed to another connected bot. - Give agents task-scoped review, comment, and update tools. Update one working comment through progress and final output. Close coalesced requests and recover delayed acknowledgements, including deleted earlier working comments. Preserve automatic replies for legacy connections without saved review configuration. Preserve partial publication evidence and quarantine uncertain automatic fallbacks without blocking Board messages or questions. - Reorganize Settings and Access with rich slash-skill instructions, numeric passing scores, clear automation controls, formal-review tooltips, member and contributor sections, and verified App branding links. Preserve invalid score drafts and automation choices across tabs. - Paginate repositories in 20-row batches with search and a true connection-wide toggle. Batch verification at GitHub's 500-ID token limit. Keep saved repository overrides while hiding their editor. - Give each review a detail URL that remains usable beyond the newest 100 records. Synchronize the manager OpenAPI contracts and add recovery, authorization, UI, and browser regressions. - Reconcile the current master branch and retain its agent avatar, feature catalog, and extracted heartbeat preparation code. Preserve a saved test-drive port and recover from an occupied high port. ## Verification - Focused UI, independent experimental-setting, and CLI tests: 199 passed. - `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm build`, and `pnpm check:token-gates` passed. The broad local Vitest attempt was interrupted after resource timeouts and stale expectations; the affected regressions passed focused reruns. The latest-head full CI matrix passed, including all browser shards, server/chat suites, builds, typechecking, canary packaging, and Docker context integrity. A Docker Hub 429 required a CI retry; it passed without changing the code. - Final review repairs: 127 attachment/event tests and server typecheck passed. All 13 final integration regressions passed under the normal CI timeout, covering legacy reply compatibility, deleted coalesced comments, inline-only review completion, progress edits, and native final recovery. Restart-safe description/review attachments passed the attachment suite. - Final regressions: four reply/lifecycle tests, both native GitHub wait tests, 171 feature-gate/reply-contract tests, the routed review preview, and five scheduler/reply regressions passed. The final fixture repair also passed all six setup-continuation cases and all three complete chat-test shards in CI, covering terminal receipts and retries under the normal CI timeout. One loaded-host receipt run exceeded its local timeout; the exact case passed in an isolated rerun and the complete CI shard. - GitHub integration tests cover personal and organization setup, retry recovery, edited mentions, attachment provenance, coalesced requests, delayed acknowledgements, partial review writes, old review URLs, and company boundaries. - Browser qualification: both GitHub journeys, all five provider setup/management journeys, and the GitHub uncertain-send recovery journey passed. GitHub setup, reconnect, and task replies run with chat disabled; chat enabled alone cannot expose GitHub bots. The disposable qualification database was removed after testing. - Earlier live qualification verified App-owned issue replies, native slash-skill invocation, progress comment edits, and a 5/5 PR review with a passing current-head check in the dedicated permissions-smoke repository. These live checks did not use personal credentials as bot execution authority. ## Risks - Deploy the merged Cloud gateway protocol before the stack update. Each callback and encrypted event must retain the original instance and tenant binding. - Migration 0323 uses idempotent column additions for test installations that already applied the earlier draft migration number. - A verified connection does not prove runtime isolation or a completed review. Runtime checks remain separate. - Required merge checks must be configured in GitHub. A passing numeric score does not formally approve a PR; approval and request-changes tools remain opt-in. - Existing-App credentials cannot silently renew an uncertain manifest exchange. Recovery preserves the existing App, draft, connection, and agent. - Repository changes save immediately. Global toggles affect all currently available repositories, including unloaded rows, without granting new installation access. - A failed or uncertain tool write suppresses automatic fallback text; the governed outbox retains its evidence. Deleted or replaced response comments are not recreated through a personal credential fallback. - GitHub logo upload remains an optional human action in GitHub App settings. Runtime provisioning, delegated setup, screenshot publication, and production push delivery remain deferred. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with tool use and code execution. The exact runtime model identifier and context size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub references) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass (focused suites; complete test matrix is checked in CI) - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: integrate Pi 1.0 into the experimental Runner (#14921)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - The experimental Runner owns provider processes and durable sessions. > - Pi needs working task execution and human controls. > - The five-PR stack must preserve changes already on master. > - Each layer now carries the complete integrated source for a safe sequential fallback. > - This PR belongs to native GitHub stack #15602, ending at #14956. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #14436, #14631, #14743 and #14956. Ship Pi 1.0 through the experimental Paperclip Runner. The five PRs are #14921, #14922, #14923, #14924 and #14956. The user authorized the complete merge after checks pass. Existing `pi_local` execution is unchanged. Accounting and wider provider/platform qualification remain deferred. ## What Changed - Recover missing final replies after workspace finalization changes owners, using accepted-turn evidence without rerunning work or granting external-chat publication. - Preserve the admitted Pi instruction root across warm runs, while retaining changed-root rejection. - Give Pi a bounded 15-second default shutdown grace so stop, drain acknowledgement and durable suspension can complete. Explicit deadlines and other providers retain their existing behavior. - Integrate the Pi 1.0 runtime and master contracts. - Use Pi profile 22. Preserve explicit caller-selected models and exact native thinking levels. Keep Pi's wrapper, helper, extension and question/control behavior unchanged from the qualified profile-19 runtime. - Preserve master's Dot lifecycle and consent fields, configured task environment, status guards and current Codex/Claude dependency versions. Cursor stays qualified. Copilot stays pending; profile 17 binds the changed shared protocol validation sources. - Exclude general AWS IAM credentials from Pi static/custom provider bindings and selected task projections; preserve the provider-scoped Bedrock bearer key. Profile 21 is retained as historical provenance. Rust and cloud install probes use the current declaration. - Patch bundled brace-expansion 5.0.9 to the exact official 5.0.12 payload. Pin the patch and complete runtime closures. Include the patch in normal installed setup tooling. Keep the upstream Pi shrinkwrap as provenance and permit only this exact security correction. - Include current attestation files in the Docker build context. Keep the repository lockfile unchanged from master. CI and private image builds resolve manifest changes before their frozen installation. ## Verification - Full local `pnpm -r typecheck` passes, including Runner Rust, server and UI. Focused integration checks pass: 194 Runner admission/environment tests, 63 profile/credential tests with one expected skip, 152 Dot/UI configuration tests, and Pi transcript/notice tests. - Full local `pnpm build` passes on the final source. - Fresh final-source checks pass: all 698 Rust workspace tests (32 binaries), 156 credential/profile/controller tests with one expected skip, Runner TypeScript typecheck, and 20 package/setup/sandbox tests. - The profile-21 Pi materializer passes on the native host with the official pinned Node 24.21.0 and its npm. It verifies all 150 locked packages, the patched dependency and the exact closure. Setup/package bundle tests and UI token gates pass. - The old hashes were reproduced for all three supported targets before calculating the patched graph. New closure hashes are darwin-arm64 `282022db10150c6632b3444df421342e7d534bdf5d5fb1097a2e79d0625a2bcf`, darwin-x64 `64e251e19009f755c0b04f73ce2138246faab71a961b0f13d75ebfcc34bef12e`, and linux-x64 `713b1fdff42fb56a1518bdc084f181d70bee8ebadc3e4b1d76321ed9108c8410`. Independent native platform execution is separate from graph identity reproduction. - Historical cloud qualification remains unchanged: all seven core cases pass on shipping source `10dc43c9ec65d88c2f782d62afb296d09494f215`, harness `1a4408a48cfb5a1f094a311141c257c92cd7a893`, image `sha256:5b3a775b383591bda1b0c1889e509acc70ce7f37c53f09733c81d59037f02280`, and accepted Sonnet 4.6/low fixture. All 215 canonical files and all seven cleanup checks pass independent verification. These are profile-19 results and are not relabeled as fresh profile-22 runs. - Current Pi digest: `sha256:e92078bee3c23bec4100aa589013a44613d054cd686826534025d8019e9f39a9`. [The readiness plan](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/codex/pi-production-readiness/doc/plans/2026-10-02-pi-production-readiness.md) preserves campaign and failed-attempt provenance. - Merge only after every PR's current-head CI and fresh review pass. Linux CI covers the full suites, build and browser tests. The local embedded Postgres API-authority suite cannot start on this macOS/Node 26 host, so Linux CI must confirm that suite. ### Fresh profile-22 core qualification — 2026-10-08 All seven accepted core cases pass canonically on Pi profile 22, with `openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6` and native-confirmed low thinking. This model is a fixture; production accepts the caller's explicit Pi provider/model. Runtime/install source: `3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401`. [Hosted Linux image and clean-install verification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868328023) passes, including all 20 source-bound archives, normal CLI/Pi setup, companion import and the production pack reader. This exact installation source includes the latest master integration and the corrected Pi warm instruction-root fence. Full local typecheck/build and current-head hosted CI verify the final stack. All 13 focused real-root regressions pass. The full local executor suite passed 662 tests; 15 database tests could not start the Mac embedded PostgreSQL service. Hosted Linux CI passes the full required verification and E2E checks. These fresh results keep their own source identity; profile-19 results remain historical. | Core path | Canonical campaign | Retained archive SHA-256 | | --- | --- | --- | | File edit, validation, download and Done | `pi-core22-replyfix-0-1791511228` | 23 files; `a473e8603a3dd4737863291f8d3d1e392391f0b16d433c3e0e0e9d8baf7a97b0` | | Pending question and controller restart | `pi-core22-replyfix-1-1791511376` | 33 files; `6b829c4eb74e1f32a89c692a4ae7130dbfc1c6d3cf13915effe2103d9e242c8e` | | Three-turn session/process/workspace continuity | `pi-core22-replyfix-2-1791511587` | 23 files; `7a87021f8f9a3fdd3c58bb4467f8d82c635e3ea4795d6e75f144d9aa14818df8` | | Four typed questions and browser reconnects | `pi-core22-replyfix-3-1791511881` | 42 files; `9e31755252be1f4f9cb0626c984c142d4d1ae5f5bee3a7af08444db8d12c280a` | | Plan approval and completion | `pi-core22-replyfix-4-1791512031` | 22 files; `a0383ce1aab38e7b5a25ce0e9dd3bebea5c037ebd96ae6b29dae19015da2ae2c` | | Same-turn steering and permission denial | `pi-core22-replyfix-5-1791512261` | 39 files; `c929b8c7070f0b66aedc17e65ca46e6beab1e363926ac9f7e2a75fb250f05949` | | Stop during pending permission | `pi-core22-replyfix-6-1791512390` | 33 files; `7f0a58ae0f4d5bfc76149435f4e322537089c5bd16e7ffe9b5ad71f10a621a07` | All 215 canonical files (28714587 bytes) are independently hash-verified. All seven cleanup grades pass, with no owned runtime process or temporary root after each case. Automatic retries are zero. The owned cloud host stopped normally after retention. The prior profile-22 warm attempt remains failed and separately retained: archive SHA-256 `1e54eba5ec72b50cee1534b23d1d1d4f21a090006b8a64501ba70db972abfde5`. Its original canonical classification is preserved. Diagnosis reproduced a product bug comparing an agent-files root against an unset checkpoint-only field. The fix stores the admitted physical root separately from the adopted per-run collection capability. The real-root regression fails before the fix and passes afterward, including rejection of a changed physical root. Fixture, grader, model and all seven accepted case IDs are unchanged; this fresh campaign tests final-reply publication after file registration first. The intermediate restart attempt also remains failed and retained: archive SHA-256 `5dcaefdf1d17cf4cd54fd4cf810f45e736667392339b8ce7caf08bb4e225277f`. Its original canonical classification is preserved. Pi resumed, wrote the verified answer and completed its task; exact runner suspension was proven, but idle stop consumed about 5.2s and left under 3s for the drain acknowledgement. The Pi-only default shutdown grace is now 15s, preserving a full 5s drain round trip and a finite suspension reserve. Explicit caller deadlines, other provider defaults, literal drain receipts and exact suspension identity checks remain unchanged. The timing regression fails before this correction and passes afterward; all 18 focused settlement tests and Runner typecheck pass. The final-source file attempt is also preserved as failed (`candidate_failure`), archive SHA-256 `db6767b6773ea618997927ac77bdb005a5ac81492c7b9c0ffbc900449f829bc9`. Native edit, validation, exact downloadable artifact and Done/succeeded all passed, and the exact final reply was durably recorded. A workspace recovery owner completed before the live heartbeat reached presentation, leaving that reply absent from task chat. Recovery now materializes only a completed final reply from the accepted turn of an ordinary internal Done task, preserving issue/run/contract binding, suppression, external-chat authorization and same-run deduplication. The database regression covers the generated file-preparation receipt, suppression, unapproved external continuation and replay. Server typecheck and all 49 response-selection tests pass; hosted Linux verifies the database regression because embedded PostgreSQL cannot start on this Mac. The delayed-final-answer database regression passes on [the final root-source Linux server shard](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37868262553/job/113628594152), alongside 1,108 passing tests. The first root Runner shard had one unchanged durable-resume test exceed its 5-second timeout; the identical top-source shard and the isolated exact test passed. One rerun of that failed job and its required aggregate passed without source or test changes. The original failed job log and the single-rerun receipt remain retained. ### October 9 merge verification Current merge head: `5a8fe63512a7166aaef5cf50065a25008aa8b44b`. All current-head checks pass, including `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`; exact-head Greptile review is 5/5 with no unresolved threads. Current master conflicts are resolved. The user authorized the maintainer override of the code-owner review gate after these checks. The seven retained live core cases remain bound to source `3241a992f2a7703e59e97ed0fd3e5d6405de4401` and its recorded cloud image. ## Risks - The security correction changes the dependency closure and profile identity. Old sessions must reopen on the new profile. Exact identities and credential bindings fail closed. - The runner remains experimental and requires explicit selection. Legacy Pi Local is unchanged. Caller model IDs pass through; the E2E model is a fixture. - Accounting and the broad platform/provider matrix remain deferred. fix(native): resume connection tasks after approval decisions (#15471)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Native tasks can pause while a human decides whether to allow a connection action. > - The next turn needs both the saved decision and complete accounting for the previous turn. > - Cancellation could discard final usage, and complete direct Claude API receipts could remain unpriced. > - A stale blocked or review report could also request approval again after the original card was declined. > - This pull request retains shutdown accounting and rejects approval waits bound to an already resolved action. > - The benefit is reliable continuation with the existing budget and approval controls. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15420. Related: #15312 addresses requester ownership during dispatch. This change addresses receipt capture and final-response validation. ## What Changed - Retain usage events after native cancellation. Continue to reject late provider messages and work. - Drain same-turn accounting and terminal events for at most fifteen seconds after a durable governed wait. Keep incomplete accounting blocked. - Estimate complete, unpriced, direct Anthropic API receipts for the exact `claude-sonnet-5` model. Record the rate version and assumptions. Use the one-hour cache-write rate when the receipt lacks cache TTL. - Bind stale approval reports to exact interaction, action-request, or invocation IDs in the same company, task, agent, and run. Cover blocked, review, and response-wake reports. Keep independent reviews valid. - Fence checkpoint and result writes after a controller detaches for restart, including operations waiting for a database lock. Reject stale successful returns before certifying accounting. - Allow bounded subscription teardown only after retaining an actual provider terminal. - Journal the exact governed-wait trigger and disposition before provider interruption. Recover that wait independently of a later saved answer, replay retained accounting, and reject mismatched or unproven terminal evidence. - Give settling governed turns a bounded window before shutdown detaches their controller. - Keep fuzzy external app matches alongside installed capability matches instead of forcing an unrelated provider question for a generic query. - Return up to twenty exact active catalog tool names after an invalid request, after eligibility checks; still reject the request without granting access or creating an approval. - Require retained provider terminal proof before settling a governed wait, including when complete usage arrives before stream closure/error/timeout. Retain harmless numbered cancellation events so restart replay stays contiguous. - Isolate accounting-test OpenCode config from the host plugin directory. - Add regression coverage and document the accounting, restart and connection-search behavior. ## Verification Current PR source: `0cf08efd75f8fb23f7989beda6dbda92587088bf`. The live matrix below measured frozen `09a776bcb1f77422156f8be11e13f8c29f43e7f7`; later review fixes are verified separately and do not relabel those runs. - Repository typecheck and build pass. - Current runner runtime and cancellation suites: 191 tests pass. Six new regressions cover stream end/error/timeout without provider-stop proof and contiguous cancellation acknowledgement/request replay; all six failed before the fix. The existing bounded cleanup case now explicitly supplies terminal proof. All 31 adapter accounting tests pass with isolated fixture config. - New checkpoint-rebinding and approval-criterion suites: 65 tests pass; runner HTTP integration: 29 tests pass. Unchanged executor/control-plane suites: 640 tests pass; database-backed connection suites: 68 tests pass. - Current retained evidence verification covers 222 file hashes across all fifteen original result artifacts. The three-case [published report](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-37651896525-1/index.html) and all eight screenshot hashes verify. The [three-case recovery report](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-37662587356-1/index.html) and all six screenshots also verify; the nine-result campaign did not publish. - Evaluation support: 1,805 Vitest tests pass, one skipped; 128 Node tests pass. Eval typecheck and catalog discovery pass. - Full local repository unit run was interrupted before the follow-up edits after three tool-access failures and one runner HTTP failure. Those failures pass in isolation; the 09a full run was interrupted after one rapid Slack callback-ordering failure and seven skill-service failures. All eight pass both isolated and with full-runner environment settings, and all 74 skill-service tests pass together; the subsequent full run reported two 15-second OpenCode accounting timeouts and was stopped with exit 130 to apply review fixes. The timeouts reproduce while copying this host’s 61 MB OpenCode config. All 31 tests pass after isolating config inside each fixture without increasing timeouts or changing assertions. A complete local full-suite pass is not claimed. Repository-wide CI also passes on the final review-fix head in [run 37669185952](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37669185952). Earlier database-skipped diagnostics and the older ENFILE run are retained and are not full-suite passing evidence. - Three-case live campaign [37651896525](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37651896525) passes all three original grades on frozen source 09a: 55/55 checks, eight succeeded run records, complete accounting receipts, matching checkpoint identities and no pending approvals. Campaign [37653533353](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37653533353) adds nine original passes (173/173 checks, eighteen succeeded records) on the identical source. Its other three jobs failed before runner assignment or any step while GitHub could not load the paid environment; those original infrastructure failures are retained. Campaign [37662587356](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37662587356) completes only those unstarted cells: all three original grades pass (57/57 checks, six succeeded run records). All fifteen exact cases now pass on source 09a: eight FAIL → PASS, seven PASS → PASS, zero new overall failures and zero pending pairs. Total current evidence: 285/285 checks and thirty-two succeeded run records, complete accounting receipts, matching checkpoint identities, no pending approvals or retry records. Earlier campaigns retain forty-seven additional run records and two known same-run recovery attempts; actual provider-call counts and invoices remain unknown. The nine-result campaign skipped publication and its public URL returns 403; original artifacts remain retained. Previous ba9 campaign [37645656840](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37645656840) completed 2 PASS / 1 FAIL: Claude restart/approval and Codex decline pass, while OpenCode resumes but times out searching for exact tool names and never creates the access card. That failure and incomplete cancelled-run accounting remain preserved; the new catalog error guidance targets this observed dead end. Campaign [37642957312](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37642957312) remains 0 PASS / 3 FAIL and exposed the now-corrected cross-run marker leak and unknown-criterion approval gap. The original baseline remains 7 PASS / 8 FAIL, first repair 2 PASS / 3 FAIL, and second repair 0 PASS / 3 FAIL. All fifteen selected cases are qualified by their original grades in this bounded trial. These live grades belong to 09a. Its twelve governed-wait checkpoints retain matching same-turn terminal fingerprints, but passing artifacts omit detailed event journals; the later six adversarial regressions qualify the new terminal-proof and replay guards separately. Final-head repository CI passes. [Fresh Greptile review](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/15471#issuecomment-6044369780) is 5/5, confirms both findings are fixed, and reports no new actionable issues. All review threads are resolved and the PR has no merge conflicts. ## Risks - Governed cancellation drains accounting for up to fifteen seconds. Restart detachment gives a settling batch up to twenty seconds to finish. An incomplete receipt or unproven provider terminal still prevents successful qualification. - Claude prices are estimates, not invoices. The estimate assumes standard global API pricing and uses a conservative cache-write rate. Unsupported models, billers, and billing modes remain unpriced. - Approval identity matching must remain scoped to the current run and the requested approval. It does not authorize execution of a declined call. - Original baseline and final candidate have different merged master context. Exact-case outcomes are before/after observations, not isolated causal attribution to this repair. - No schema migration, fixture, oracle or grader change. Search-result guidance now treats fuzzy external matches as suggestions. Existing app authorization and provider-consent checks remain required. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with code editing, terminal tools, and test execution. The exact deployment identifier and context window are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass (191 current runtime tests and 31 accounting tests; interrupted full-suite history and CI coverage are disclosed above) - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(connections): deliver saved instructions to authorized agent turns (#15216)
Persist optional connection instructions and deliver authorized snapshots to agent execution prompts. Keep provider templates with each app definition, preserve edits and opt-outs, and replace sessions when guidance or access changes. Use shared production settings across setup and Permissions, with source visibility in agent Instructions. Add the initial memory-provider defaults and managed Honcho workspace configuration. Include migration 0298 and regression coverage for generic providers, runtime delivery, authorization, and catalog regeneration. Co-Authored-By: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): share native completion tool guidance (#14961)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Native Runner agents report completion through finish and block tools. > - The providers receive different descriptions for those tools. > - Completion guidance belongs with the tools that enforce the result. > - This pull request shares the descriptions and refreshes retained catalogs. > - A separate native suite checks completion and blocking on production defaults. > - Legacy agents retain their separate skill and API paths. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs: #14920, #14948, #14985. **Current behavior** Native Codex and MCP bridges describe finish and block differently. Retained provider sessions can keep old descriptions. **Proposed behavior** Native providers receive the same finish and block descriptions. The descriptions cover report selection, validation feedback, returned outcomes, approval gates and final-answer timing. Retained native sessions refresh from v13 to v14. **Reason and benefit** Put the completion procedure next to its native tool. Preserve stock base instructions, schemas, permissions and terminal semantics. This PR now stands alone on master. It contains no reduced manual, shared prompt or operational-skill changes from #14948. ## What Changed - Add canonical native finish and block descriptions. Use them in direct Codex and both native MCP bridges. - Advance the native tool contract to v14. Cover old-v13 refresh without replacing task identity or prior history. - Check authenticated tool catalogs, provider start/resume frames and serialized daemon catalogs. - Add an independent, explicit-only native completion suite. Preserve the original assigned-skill durable-document journey. Pair it with a concrete whole-task blocker across Codex, ACPX Claude and OpenCode. - Verify the actual public production default bundle and budgets before execution. Require independent durable disposition, native result/terminal receipts and observable provider-final ordering. - Correct the blocker browser oracle to accept the requested explanation. Keep exact owner/action/scope checks. Calibrate positive, missing and contradictory replies. - Preserve only actual `tool_call` terminal names (`paperclip_finish` / `paperclip_block`) in the native compatibility run-log projection. Require the same named call ID through its finishing result; retain all other redaction boundaries. - Admit verified hosted shallow checkout/build hydration and bind the selected runnerd to exact source/archive/binary provenance. Hosted cells truthfully reuse the existing trusted build; local admission executes Rust calibration. Forward only public source/run identifiers through both launcher preflight subprocess paths. - Enforce single attempts in the launcher for opted-in fixtures. Keep ordinary retry policy unchanged. Run exact-source, credential-free admission before credential loading. ## Verification - Frozen candidate: `d6e59e4712a3158ab4cd7d58deff1389b4578c21`, based on master `59c07ede72dc08b8aba149a01cc11e0b7a204621`; historical descriptions: `e74ed61a69fbdd8b3a8f15dd6456bc3140246e33`. Exactly the five original native production files and six unit tests differ. Both carry identical corrected fixtures, strict named finishing-call grader, closed compatibility carrier and admission. Defaults, profiles/models/auth/permissions and manifest bytes match. - Actual launcher `prepareNativeCompletionPreflight` → `verifyNativeCompletionPreflight` admission passes on both exact refs with zero providers: candidate 132 / historical 127 selected TypeScript assertions, 128 Node calibrations and one Rust normalization calibration each; E2E typecheck, manifest checks, selected binary provenance and six-cell discovery pass. Each has 257 explicitly skipped unrelated assertions, not coverage. The credential-free environment calibration exercises both real prepare/verify subprocess options with public hosted identifiers and rejects credential/ambient overrides. Complete actual launcher prepare→verify also passes on both frozen refs with explicitly synthetic hosted metadata/verified archives, separately labeled as calibration rather than a trusted GitHub run. Exact framed provenance parsing and mock source identity are calibrated without relaxing the real verifier. - [Complete matched qualification report](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/532066620b88e8731a5211fbe1cbc48ce8c7dd1a/doc/plans/2026-10-02-native-completion-master-qualification.md), [immutable manifest](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/532066620b88e8731a5211fbe1cbc48ce8c7dd1a/doc/plans/2026-10-02-native-completion-calibrated-manifest.json) and [closed retained audit/hashes](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/532066620b88e8731a5211fbe1cbc48ce8c7dd1a/doc/plans/2026-10-02-native-completion-calibrated-results/comparison.json) are inspectable. All six candidate cells pass; historical descriptions pass five. Paired outcomes: **zero new failures, one new pass (Codex blocker), five unchanged passes, zero pending pairs**. [Candidate campaign](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37098728980) and [historical campaign](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37098815696) each execute six original attempt-1 native runs, with no campaign retry and successful cleanup. Their trusted workflow revision is `215586d127e97c9301d86e769a39a15c13298ca2`, separate from measured source. [Candidate public HTML](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-37098728980-1/index.html) and [historical public HTML](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-37098815696-1/index.html) retain declared screenshots. - Independent candidate evidence agrees with all original grades: 51 strict native checks, 12 served-default/budget checks and 21 original skill/document checks pass. The historical Codex blocker saves the correct whole-task blocker but omits the required marker from its actual provider final and identical saved reply. This is not semantic-summary fallback. Its original browser/matcher failure stays retained; the additional native snapshot/grade and workspace before/after digest were never written and are not fabricated by the separate API/PRP audit. Historical Codex completion has one failed finish followed by success within the same native run; the public receipt records no failure reason. All twelve runs and their usage remain counted. Reported model-cost subtotals are $0.00421482 historical/$0.00437391 candidate; Codex/Claude zero entries have unknown billing type, actual invoices are unverified and hosted execution cost is unmetered. One matched trial supports no extra failure within these six cases, not broad statistical or coding-quality equivalence. - Initial hosted `e18c2cf9` / `459455ac` and subsequent `0a9c5a7` / `00a761b` cohorts each stopped before providers in all twelve cells. The latter failed a mocked-receipt unit test under ambient hosted metadata; all source/build proofs passed. [All twelve later setup receipts](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/402ee94c52273ad58de355ae9a7d562dd22f8101/doc/plans/2026-10-02-native-completion-qualified-hosted-setup.json) are retained. [Exact failed setup receipts](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/27653eb1a8f8ce839776d760f4563f672e5a706c/doc/plans/2026-10-02-native-completion-master-hosted-setup.json) and the original manifest remain intact. Local sandbox-denied loopback and stale anchor-expectation attempts are retained separately; unchanged appropriate assertions were corrected/admitted before paid dispatch. Old anonymous OpenCode streams are not assigned inferred tool names or retroactively passed. - Full provider-free E2E support previously passed 927 tests in 67 files. Exact-head d6 normal CI run `37098409915`, attempt 1 passes full repository typecheck/build/tests, Runner Rust/static checks, all browser shards/aggregate and canary: 52 check-runs pass, four intentional skips, Snyk passes. Fresh Greptile check `111132956342` is 5/5 with zero unresolved threads. Source-specific deterministic tests do not substitute for the bounded live comparison. - Earlier native source `9138f570c341c251a5727c32d6615ce238bc8e03` is archived. Its [complete reduced-manual-context report](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/9138f570c341c251a5727c32d6615ce238bc8e03/doc/plans/2026-10-02-native-completion-live-comparison.md) remains intact, including original failures, grader limits and provider-free replay. It is not current-master-context qualification. ## Risks Changed tool text can change model behavior. The completed six-pair qualification shows no extra failing outcomes in this bounded trial; other tasks and repeated-run variance remain unmeasured. Observable final ordering does not prove provider feedback consumption. Public evidence can fail closed if a provider does not expose the required result sequence. This slice does not remove native fixed prompts or measure general coding quality. No database, schema, permission or legacy completion changes occur. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with code inspection, execution and tool use. The exact deployment ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. They are unavailable rather than inferred from the model menu. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): preserve task context when tool connections change (#14963)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Agents use tools through company-scoped connections and provider sessions. > - Resolving a tool connection currently forces a fresh session even when the provider can load new tools into the existing conversation. > - A fresh provider conversation can receive too little history to continue the task. > - This pull request adds explicit tool-refresh capabilities and uses them in both runner paths. > - Fresh attempts receive bounded task history with source IDs and retrieval instructions. > - The benefit is that agents can continue the same task after a connection changes. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A resolved tool connection forced a fresh provider conversation. The new conversation could lose the original goal and prior answers. Claude also rejected resume when only the MCP server set changed. **Expected behavior** Resume the provider conversation when its harness can refresh tools. When a fresh session is required, supply enough bounded history to continue the task. Preserve company, agent, task, workspace, model, instruction, and skill checks. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Start a conversation and agree on a task and its constraints. 2. Request and connect a tool needed for the task. 3. Continue the conversation after the connection resolves. 4. Check that the agent remembers the task and can use the new tool. **Paperclip version or commit** The bug was reproduced on master at `c46e41e81`. This branch is rebased on current master. **Deployment mode** Self-hosted server. Both legacy adapters and the native runner are affected. Related public work: Refs #13282 for task-backed conversations. Refs #13057 for the broader session-compaction proposal. Refs #14659 for another report about local CLI session continuity. This change fixes tool-connection continuation. Provider authentication repairs keep their existing recovery behavior. ## What Changed - Expose tool-refresh support in native harness descriptors and legacy adapter metadata. - Request tool refresh after connection resolution. Keep provider authentication repair as a fresh-session wake. - Reload current tools and credentials while retaining supported Claude, Codex, Grok, and other provider conversations. - Allow MCP-only changes during qualified native recovery. Keep all other compatibility checks. - Refresh managed-provider and ACPX tool bindings when attaching a new run. - Add a fresh-session handoff for both runner paths. Bound database reads, excerpts, and the final packet to 24,000 bytes. - Include the original request, recent messages, decisions, plans, prior answers, and source IDs. Mark omitted content. Apply reset boundaries, wake cutoffs, quarantine, and secret redaction. - Add regression tests and document the capabilities and handoff behavior. ## Verification - `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed. Rust formatting passed. - Final review fixes passed 314 server tests, 333 adapter utility tests, 139 native-session runtime tests, and 12 managed-provider Rust tests. They verify historical quarantine, raised budgets across attachment, no history reads on successful resume, and handoff delivery on fresh retry. - Broader branch verification also passed 1,401 adapter utility tests, 1,047 runner TypeScript tests, 43 Grok adapter tests, and 311 Rust core tests. - Live Claude CLI and Grok ACP probes preserved the provider session ID, recalled a prior task constraint, and called a newly added read-only MCP tool. - GitHub CI passed on `b21486d18084a7aa4cafbe8e012f7cad6585d9cc`: 55 successful checks and 4 skipped checks. This includes all test shards, all eight browser shards, runner checks, and the Grok clean public npm install canary. [CI run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37057514976). - A full local test attempt encountered a separate Git snapshot timeout. All affected local suites passed after the final edits, and the full CI test gates passed. - Review the capability matrix in `packages/paperclip-runner/README.md`. Repeat the four reproduction steps with a supported provider and with an unsupported harness. ## Risks - Provider tool refresh can fail. Existing recovery falls back to a fresh conversation where policy permits it. - A new transport can replace an old process while preserving the provider conversation. Tests cover current credentials and unchanged identity. - Long history can omit older context. Explicit markers and source IDs let the agent retrieve needed context within task scope. - Unknown and unqualified harnesses use the fresh-session path. No database migration is required. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6, with reasoning, tool use, code execution, and live provider testing. The exact model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. Claude and Grok also ran as test subjects. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix: make runner task context ownership explicit (#13753)
<!-- Write all pull request text in Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100). --> ## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Task descriptions, comments, continuation data, skills, and execution rules enter several agent adapters. > - The same source can be rendered by more than one automatic input carrier. > - Failed resumes can also rebuild input from stale or compact context. > - This pull request gives each Paperclip-owned source one delivery owner and preserves the required transport boundaries. > - It adds deterministic adapter, interaction, runner, and browser tests for these boundaries. > - The benefit is more predictable context delivery with explicit evidence for later live qualification. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Related: #13144 removes a duplicate environment payload and bounds wake lists. Related: #11360 addresses Hermes resume behavior. This pull request preserves compatible active-session formats while repairing context ownership and stale question creation. **What happened?** Task descriptions and comments could enter more than one automatic context block. Native transports could wrap a complete model input in a second task envelope. Some legacy and gateway adapters could omit the owned assignment on ordinary tasks or rebuild a failed resume with stale compact context. A continuation could also request a question after newer human comments had arrived. **Expected behavior** Each task or comment source has one automatic model-facing owner. Distinct comment IDs and repeated wording remain distinct. Fresh fallback attempts rebuild the required full context. A question request is rejected when newer queued human direction makes it stale. Harness access policy remains owned by execution configuration. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Build a task with a description and current comments. 2. Capture the actual adapter or runner input. 3. Compare source ownership and task-envelope nesting. 4. Queue a human comment before a continuation requests a question. 5. Trigger a failed resume and inspect the fresh retry input. 6. Run the focused adapter, interaction, runner, and browser checks. ## What Changed - Add shared prompt-section selection at the provider-attempt boundary. - Deliver owned assignment context through native, legacy CLI, ACP, gateway, cloud, Pi, Kimi, Grok, Gemini, OpenCode, Cursor, OpenClaw, and Hermes paths. - Rebuild full or compact context after resume recovery changes the attempt. Add native and Claude ACP tests of actual recovery requests. - Preserve custom templates, loaded instruction files, execution policies, and older active-session formats. - Record continuation source metadata and reject stale question creation under the issue-row lock. - Add explicit Product E2E context-integrity profiles, prerequisite gates, credential-isolation checks, and report fixtures. - Bypass service-worker forwarding for same-origin Vite development modules. A real Chromium test fails with resource exhaustion before the repair and passes after it. Production asset caching keeps its existing policy. - Add browser diagnostics and service-worker module-loading regressions. - Add an explicit zero-retry eval option. The default retry behavior remains unchanged. Each campaign records its effective policy. - Remove the model-facing working-directory sentence from four prompt builders. Existing workspace, sandbox, permission, and custom-template configuration remains unchanged. - Align the everyday workflow assertion with the current 47-entry catalog. Compared with current upstream master, the branch carries the context-ownership implementation and its tests, the explicit context-integrity catalog and evidence harness, and the focused browser regression checks. ## Verification **Merge assessment:** focused regression evidence supports merge. This is not full completion of the original broad qualification matrix. The maintainer has authorized merge after fresh verification of the master integration. - Current head: `bbd52f82114eabf09bc7b1a7e97d54a5b43bbc00`. This integrates current master `2f585ef26a1814fa209715242d1ca791b63e4c4e`. All 14 conflicts are resolved. Cancellation checks, workspace finalization, native Grok support, and both sets of tests are retained. - Current-head Greptile: **5/5**, with no blocking findings. The review names this exact commit. All **59 reported checks are terminal: 55 successful, 4 skipped, zero pending or failing**. This includes the full root general and serialized suites, separate runner checks, typecheck, build, canary, browser E2E, Docker, and security checks. The successful legacy security status is included in that total. - After integration: workspace typecheck and full build passed. Separate runner checks passed: **2,160 TypeScript tests (10 skipped), 582 Rust tests, and 39 preparation checks**. Other passing checks include 621 Product E2E harness units, 376 focused shared/adapter tests, 160 real-database/API tests, 86 Hermes tests, 18 browser-support checks, and Product E2E typechecking. The complete root suite passed in CI. The duplicate local monolithic root run was stopped after that CI result; it is not counted as a completed local pass. - New native recovery coverage retains full assignment, completion contract, and explicit skill selection after safe replacement, for old and prepared input formats. Full native session test file: **136/136 passed**. - New Claude ACP coverage captures actual fresh, resumed, and missing-session fallback requests. It verifies one assignment copy, comment order, identical text under distinct comment IDs, and full fallback context. Full file: **33/33 passed**. Both affected TypeScript checks passed. - Existing deterministic tests cover source revisions, approval and trust boundaries, completion validation, custom templates, compatible sessions, standalone driver wrapping, and maintained adapter transport requests. - Provider-free browser support: **17/17 passed** after the master merge. Service-worker unit tests: **33/33 passed**. The module-overload regression failed before the repair and passed after it in real Chromium. ### Fresh live comparisons The new batch ran exactly four Product E2E attempts. **All four passed on the first attempt; no retries.** Each has six terminal matchers plus the existing browser lifecycle and invariant checks. | Exact case ID | Control | Candidate | |---|---|---| | `core-compatibility.runner-codex.local.plan-revise-accept` | Passed | Passed | | `local-session-integrity.runner-acpx-claude.local.structured-question-restart-resume` | Passed | Passed | The plan case checks a revised canonical plan and revision-bound approval before completion. The question case restarts the server before submitting the answer, then verifies the continuation completes. Control source is `dfa4e1bda8d50a1a01746603251a9128dbe9d0d6`. Candidate source is `79fcdb5dece501d28064ea9da306603881b46f0c`. They use identical frozen definitions and provider versions: Codex `0.156.0` with `gpt-5.6-sol`; ACPX `0.13.1` / Claude ACP `0.73.0` with `claude-sonnet-5`. The September 24 head added master browser recovery and test-only changes. The September 28 head also integrates newer master changes, including cancellation, workspace finalization, and native Grok. These are frozen-source live results, not exact-head live runs. The candidate received one description copy where the control initially received three. The submitted initial plan envelopes were 7,969 versus 19,097 characters. Question envelopes were 7,592 versus 18,919. These are structural measurements, not whole-provider token or dollar savings. ### Earlier evidence and failed attempts - The preceding fresh batch has four effective passing pairs: OpenCode comment continuation and assigned skill, native Codex comment continuation, and native Claude comment continuation. It retains **11 attempts: eight passed and three failed**. - Original failures remain recorded: missing local PostgreSQL library links before task creation; host-sleep cleanup after task/page checks passed; and a Claude **control** session-open rejection before a model turn. Setup was repaired identically on both worktrees. The permitted unchanged infrastructure retries passed. The underlying Claude provider startup error was not retained and remains unknown. - Older R2 retains **17 passes and one failure** across 18 attempts, including eight both-pass native/legacy Codex/Claude pairs. Its OpenCode blank-page failure led to the service-worker repair. R2 is historical evidence: master changed the native fixed prompt and removed duplicate wake environment data afterward. - The September 24 CI run initially failed one unrelated preview readiness test (`ECONNREFUSED` on its local fixture). Its test and production code match master. Isolated local verification passed **28 tests, 3 skipped**. One unchanged CI retry passed the full shard: **831 passed, 1 skipped**, including all **31 preview-exposure tests**. The aggregate CI gate passed afterward. The precise startup cause remains unknown; a port race is a hypothesis, not a proved cause. ### Limits The original wider profile/workflow matrix, repeated trials, and remote Daytona qualification are incomplete. These results support a focused merge recommendation, not statistical equivalence or universal harness qualification. Some usage receipts are missing in both variants, so no token or dollar savings are claimed. The $500 ceiling was preserved using conservative allowances; failed attempts and unknown charges remain in the ledger. Reproduce the focused additions with `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapters/claude-local/src/server/acp.test.ts` and `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/paperclip-runner exec vitest run src/native-session-runtime.test.ts`. Full checks use `pnpm -r typecheck`, `pnpm test:run`, `pnpm build`, and the separate runner checks. Paid evals require the frozen definitions, profiles, and credentials; do not use `--all` as a substitute for the selected cases. ## Risks - Context placement changes can affect model behavior. Deterministic checks cover the selected paths, but live qualification remains incomplete. - The stale-question guard can reject a request when queued human comments arrived during the run. This is intended. - New stored inputs and model envelopes retain compatibility readers for older active sessions. - Custom templates may intentionally repeat content. - Removing a model-facing working-directory sentence does not change filesystem, command, sandbox, or permission configuration. - The worker bypass applies only to same-origin development module paths. Cache-policy tests preserve private-response handling and production asset caching. Mounted HTTP fixture changes remain test-only. - This PR does not claim measured token savings or statistical equivalence across every harness. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, exact model gpt-6-astra, with repository tools and code execution. Bounded supporting work used gpt-5.6-luna and gpt-6-luna. The serving context-window size is not exposed in this task. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue in-PR using the required issue fields - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket id - [x] I have run the focused local checks and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect these changes - [x] I have considered and documented risks above - [x] All current-head Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups for the current head - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix: reduce chat latency and preserve managed session reuse (#13710)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and keeps their work attached to tasks. > - Chat connectors carry user messages and agent replies between a provider and those tasks. > - Each extra startup and context reset delays a reply. > - Managed account metadata was lost during adapter decoding, so compatible follow-ups started fresh. > - This branch fixes the reset and measures the remaining preparation, execution, and delivery costs. > - The changes must preserve account isolation, authorization, durable output, and recovery ownership. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #13699. The related service lifecycle work in #13410 and #13408 is separate; this branch focuses on task-bound chat response latency. **What happened?** Managed AI follow-ups started new provider sessions even after their configuration fingerprint stayed stable. The Codex codec removes unknown fields. The resume check then read the removed credential identity and treated it as a credential change. **Expected behavior** Compatible follow-ups resume the correct provider session. Changes to credentials, responsible users, permissions, or task configuration retain their reset behavior. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Use a Slack connector with a managed AI connection. 2. Send a message, then send a same-thread follow-up. 3. Inspect the configuration reset reason and the provider session identity. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced on `2a99de80ec52db01eead901f28323926ceaf3c1d`. **Deployment mode** Cloud staging with a native Codex runner. ## What Changed - Read saved credential identity before adapter decoding discards it. - Remove the internal credential identity from adapter-facing session params. - Test the real Codex codec and missing, changed, or unmanaged identity cases. - Preserve configured warm Codex runners and flush refreshed credentials after every turn. - Fence detached or closing session handles from successor credential ownership. - Stage current Codex launch credentials after restoring durable session history, uploading launch assets only once. - Reuse a runner binary already in the retained sandbox only when its SHA-256 matches the controller-owned artifact; still verify required capabilities before launch. - Lock the task before the run when saving results, preventing deadlocks with task updates. - Scope reusable projectless sandboxes to the company, environment, task, agent, and runtime configuration; verify Daytona sentinels for that scope. - Admit a new authorized chat message after a fully committed failed run and verified process cleanup. - Send compact deltas for verified plain-text Slack continuations. Match the actual prior run and current comment identity/body; exclude edited historical comments and prior agent output, preserve genuine brief edits and the full bootstrap fallback. - Keep attachments, omitted input, questions, approvals, recovery, and other providers on their existing framing. - Document managed session compatibility, credential lifecycle, and compact continuation boundaries. ## Verification - Workspace/session coverage: 156 tests passed. - Native session and credential ownership coverage: 390 tests passed, including exact artifact reuse, mismatches, failed probes, timeouts, and explicit artifact overrides. - Explicit continuation and durable chat authorization coverage: 172 tests passed. - Session resume and launch preparation coverage: 416 tests passed. - Result persistence coverage: 15 tests passed. The new concurrency test reproduced a PostgreSQL deadlock before the lock-order fix. - Environment lifecycle coverage: 92 tests passed, including projectless reuse and task/agent isolation at both selection and atomic handoff. - Daytona plugin coverage: 237 tests passed; 6 gated tests skipped. Standalone plugin build passed. - Compact Slack continuation and native resume coverage: 69 tests passed, including full-bootstrap retention, matching message authors/bodies, current-delivery selection, rejection of duplicate identities and historical comments, brief edits, and attachment/recovery fallbacks. - Final frozen-head `pnpm test:run` on repository-supported Node 26: 668 suites passed, 3 skipped, 1 failed; 12,797 tests passed and 82 skipped. The sole failure was a local `socket hang up` in `issue-recovery-actions.test.ts`, not an authorization assertion mismatch. All 57 tests in that suite passed three fresh reruns, and the suite passed latest-head CI. The full local invocation is therefore not claimed green. - An earlier Node 24 full run exposed an unrelated macOS symlink-cleanup failure; that 11-test catalog suite passes on Node 26 and in CI. No test behavior or timeout was relaxed. - Full local typecheck and build passed. Latest-head CI is green; Greptile is 5/5 with no unresolved review threads. - Two real Slack baseline replies took 25.1 and 24.6 seconds (24.9-second mean). Three same-thread signed probes on this head took 23.8, 23.9, and 22.7 seconds (23.5-second mean). This is a small sample and a modest wall-clock improvement, not a large or statistically established speedup. - In that same thread, uncached provider input fell from 8,514 tokens before compact input to 694–765 tokens afterward. The current delivery uses a 362-character delta; the full 19–21k-character bootstrap remains available for failed resume. Verified runner artifact preparation fell from about 1.2 seconds to 0.6 seconds. - A fresh thread created a separate task, sandbox, and provider session with full bootstrap (24.4 seconds). Its follow-up reused its own sandbox/session and compact input (28.3 seconds, including 16 seconds of model execution). Model variability and process startup remain substantial. - A signed duplicate webhook produced exactly one user comment, one successful run, and one final Slack reply. Slack's API independently confirmed the actual replies and a public task URL without an internal or pool hostname. - Earlier signed probes verified recovery after a failed run and reuse across a server deployment. The final idle test observed Daytona report the sandbox as stopped, then delivered a new reply in 19.9 seconds using the same sandbox/provider-session identity and compact input. Slack’s API confirmed that reply. - Live probes use signed synthetic inbound webhooks and real outbound Slack delivery, read back through Slack’s API. The final browser recheck found the Mac locked and the Slack tab blocked by another extension, so this is not claimed as full UI E2E proof. - This is a review branch. Do not merge until the maintainer reviews it. ## Risks - Incorrect session reuse could mix account or task context. Missing or changed identities continue to reset, and existing authorization checks remain in place. - Warm mode remains opt-in. Remote warm mode requires a reusable sandbox lease. Retained processes keep credentials until they close, so idle expiry and ownership fences are required. - A fresh user message may continue after a committed provider failure. Approval, current authorization, process termination, and prior-result checks remain required. - Projectless sandbox reuse is task- and agent-scoped. Missing or mismatched ownership cannot replace an existing lease; existing workspace-scoped leases keep their scope. Opt-in reuse retains a sandbox per task/agent, so provider auto-stop and deletion policies still determine idle compute and storage costs. Fleet defaults are unchanged. - Compact prompts apply only after proven resume and a matching prior-run delta. Missing or specialized context falls back to full input; fresh sessions always receive the full bootstrap. - No schema or migration changes. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with code editing, tool use, and test execution. The exact serving model ID and context-window size are not exposed by this session. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(runner): default harnesses to full auto and support task reassignment (#13686)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip lets people manage AI agents and their work. > - Agent Chat uses native runners to save plans and coordinate tasks. > - Provider defaults differed across harnesses and could stop unattended work at a second permission gate. > - Agents also lacked a dedicated tool to move existing work to another agent safely. > - This change defaults native providers to full automatic permission for provider tools and connected tools. > - A guarded reassignment tool preserves task identity, stops the previous run, and schedules the new owner once. > - Codex and Claude chat acceptance tests now use production permission defaults. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Native runner, ACPX Claude permission policy, task authority, and Agent Chat acceptance tests. **Problem or motivation** A user can authorize an agent to save a plan or create a task, but Claude's default provider gate can still stop that action. Reassignment needs a dedicated operation that preserves context and avoids concurrent owners or unintended recovery runs. **Proposed solution** Default Claude/ACPX to `approve-all`, OpenCode to `allow`, and Codex to `never`. Apply the defaults at configuration, execution, fresh-session, resume, driver, and proxy boundaries. Keep explicit permission settings and server-side company, claim, task-mode, and approval checks. Add `reassign_task` with version checks, durable idempotency, audited cancellation, and guarded successor scheduling. **Alternatives considered** A Paperclip-only allowlist still blocks provider tools and other connections during unattended work. Full automatic permission is the requested product default. Recreating a task discards its identity and history. Updating assignment without stopping the previous run can leave two agents working on the same task. **Roadmap alignment** This extends the existing planning, delegated work, governed tool access, and recovery features. It adds no new service or schema migration. Recent related tasks and open PRs were checked for duplicate work. **Additional context** Related: #13678 (Agent Chat tools and recovery), #13677 (remote runner startup). The stacked legacy-adapter companion is #13693. This also fixes the deployed-server artifact fallback needed to stage the current runner binary. ## What Changed - Default Claude/ACPX to `approve-all`, OpenCode to `allow`, and Codex to `never`, including missing settings at direct driver and proxy entry points. These defaults cover provider tools and connected tools. Preserve explicitly configured restrictive modes. - Include assigned approval reads using canonical side-effect classifications, so verifying a recorded approval does not trigger another provider gate. Paperclip approval decisions still enforce controller authority. - Carry the new permission mode through server configuration, execution contracts, recovery identity, TypeScript, and Rust. Keep `approve-paperclip` as an optional restricted mode, with exact SDK rules and closed unknown requests. It is not a default. - Add `reassign_task` to the semantic catalog, controller, mock authority, and generated contracts. - Guard reassignment with company authorization, expected owner and version, protected-state checks, and durable retry receipts. - Honor explicit backlog task creation atomically with the initial plan, without scheduling a wake. Preserve backlog holds regardless of dependency readiness. - Stop active work before changing ownership. Restore the prior owner through a guarded, idempotent wake if final handoff validation fails. Keep intentional reassignment stops out of failure recovery. Preserve backlog and blocked states without waking them early. - Add authorization, concurrency, replay, stop, and permission boundary regressions. Add Codex and Claude chat reassignment cases and run native chat cases with production defaults. - Clarify shared runner guidance: save plans and Paperclip documents directly with `write_document`; create and register a local file only when a downloadable file is requested. - Document provider defaults and the operator choices for existing agents. ## Verification - Current head `d82fbb0f03546d27cecf072250e4172e0b1ee662`: **55 checks passed**, with two intentional skips. [PR checks](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13686/checks). - Greptile reviewed that exact head at **5/5**. The security reviewer acknowledged the intended full-auto default, and the acknowledged discussions are resolved. - Full workspace `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` passed locally after rebasing onto current master. Targeted adapter/server, runner, API, default/resume, and heartbeat configuration tests passed. - **All six real-provider acceptance cases passed on their first attempt, with cleanup passing:** plan handoff, task reassignment, and backlog creation/status, each on native Claude and Codex. Evidence records Claude's effective `approve-all` mode. [Campaign and downloadable evidence](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/35469926548). - The live campaign tested combined revision `a37881c824dcd7170380fc4b788732fc743e5da7`. The final PR heads add only a heartbeat test expectation correction; application code is unchanged from that live-tested revision. - The campaign's result-enforcement job passed. Its separate report publisher failed because the trusted workflow's `patchedDependencies` configuration differs from its frozen lockfile. All six results and screenshots remain available as GitHub artifacts. The overall manual workflow is red for this publishing failure. - Full-suite coverage is supplied by the passing CI partitions. The separate unsharded local run was stopped after the corresponding CI partitions passed; it is not counted as a completed local run. - Reassignment tests cover stale state, cross-company access, denied authority, cancellation failure, compensating wake, and idempotent retries. Backlog tests verify the original creation audit, saved plan, exact task count, and absence of task-bound runs. ## Risks - Agents with no explicit permission mode now receive full provider tool permission, including connected tools. This is a deliberate broad default. Existing explicit restrictive modes still apply. Controller authorization, company isolation, workspace boundaries, and Paperclip governance remain in force. - Reassignment crosses run cancellation and task ownership transactions. Durable stop intent, revalidation, audit receipts, and guarded queue dispatch cover interruptions and retries. - The new permission enum requires a current runner artifact. The remote artifact fallback uses the same resolved controller binary for upload and execution. - Live provider behavior remains subject to the selected model. Targeted live results do not qualify the full catalog. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6, with code execution and repository tools. The exact deployment model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): preserve sessions and complete question and approval continuations (#13655)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The native runner connects task state to provider sessions. > - Follow-up turns must retain provider memory and carry new user direction. > - Lost session IDs caused repeated context and extra input tokens. > - Native question answers and approval races could leave valid work blocked. > - This pull request repairs those paths and adds regression coverage. > - Agents can continue accepted work without repeating the conversation or losing the user's answer. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #13574. That merged PR shortened continuation prompts and moved question instructions into tool documentation. This change preserves sessions and fixes failures exposed by broader testing. Related runtime work: #13408 and #13410. **What happened?** Native follow-up turns could lose the provider session ID. Completion guidance could replace the original task with its latest comment. Claude native questions could remain pending after the user answered. Approval during a running tool call could suspend the run before the tool response arrived. Onboarding and chat handoff instructions also caused repeated planning or missing plan documents. **Expected behavior** Reuse a valid provider session. Send only new events when that session already has the history. Preserve the task requirements and apply later user direction. Store the question answer and deliver it to the waiting run. Finish governed tool responses before suspending. Execute the accepted plan without asking for the same approval again. **Steps to reproduce** Run the continuation, local-session-integrity, first-task, and agent-chat suites with native Codex and Claude. Include provider-question-bridge, accept-while-running, and plan-handoff. **Paperclip version or commit** This branch is based on master |

feat: add experimental persistent agent chat (#13284)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Conversations must use the same tasks, controls, and execution history. > - Users need an ongoing chat with an agent without managing task properties. > - Agents should clarify and plan work, then hand execution to assigned project tasks. > - This pull request combines the reviewed Agent Chat stack for one squash merge. > - The benefit is persistent conversation with normal task governance and shared UI. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Task lifecycle, agent runtime tools, shared task UI, and browser/paid runner tests. **Problem or motivation** Users need one persistent conversation with each agent. A separate chat store or renderer would duplicate task behavior and bypass existing controls. **Proposed solution** Use a task-backed chat per company, user, and agent. Reuse the task composer and transcript. Clarify and plan in chat, then create assigned project tasks with the relevant plan. Keep Agent Chat behind its own disabled-by-default experimental setting. **Roadmap alignment** This implements the task-backed direction in [CEO Chat](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/master/ROADMAP.md#-ceo-chat). Related proposals: #2504 and #9693. Related request: #7981. The maintainer requested one squash merge of the complete stack. Consolidates the reviewed runtime [#13281](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13281), backend [#13282](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13282), and UI [#13283](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13283) layers with this PR's E2E coverage. All four layers passed CI and received Greptile 5/5 before consolidation. This PR targets master and includes the complete feature. ## What Changed - Add personal canonical chat tasks with ordinary company visibility, immutable identity, idempotent first sends, and an idle waiting state. - Process `/new` in queue order. Preserve history, release a chat pause, and fence old provider context and delayed writes. - Keep chat lifecycle rules across recovery, finalization, assignment, task lists, and rollups. - Support research and plan revision in chat. Hand plans to ordinary assigned project tasks before execution starts. Reject new chat subtasks. - Add repository-aware project creation and discovery tools, including multiple repository IDs and GitHub URLs, authorization, idempotency, and durable project-created cards. - Reuse task UI components for chat, with starred/recent agent navigation and a separate `enableAgentChat` experimental flag. - Add deterministic browser tests and 24 paid chat cells across four Codex/Claude profiles, with validated reports and screenshots. - Integrate current master recovery, controller lease, queued-message, and task UI changes. Gate chat interruption and deferred promotion on ownership/feature policy. Guarantee lease renewal and active controls are stopped even if teardown fails. - Preserve master's migration 0273 and generate chat migration 0274 with idempotent replay for development databases. ## Verification - Prior exact heads of all four PRs passed Linux CI, including build, typecheck, general/serialized tests, and browser E2E. Each had Greptile 5/5 and no unresolved findings. - Integrated local verification passed: full repository typecheck and production build, Storybook build, token gates, 340 focused UI tests, all 20 deterministic chat browser tests, two migration replay tests, 88 focused chat/queue/native/controller tests, and provider/session regressions including real lease expiry. These include the three lifecycle regressions for the final admission/teardown fixes; server typecheck also passes. Current head `1268eda16cc2af892055917e7292f068820be135` has Greptile 5/5 with no unresolved findings and passing security scans. All final-head CI gates passed: build, full Runner verification, typecheck/release registry, canary, all general/serialized test shards, and all browser E2E shards ([CI run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34696739927)). Local PostgreSQL startup contention required serialized retries; skipped fixtures do not count as passing coverage. - The earlier paid campaign passed all 24 chat cells and retained 32 screenshots: [report](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-34648511170-1/index.html?report=agent-chat#suite-agent-chat). It tested `abacbdfd2f660709ec37312cdb758284c8399d04`; it is prior evidence, not a paid run of this integrated head. - Manual check: enable Agent Chat in Experimental settings, open an agent, clarify and revise a plan, then hand off to an assigned project task. Stop a reply, send `/new`, and verify fresh context with retained history. Disable the setting and verify agent shortcuts/new chat turns are blocked. ## Risks - Queue/session integration can affect retries and delayed writes. Tests cover ownership, cancellation, reset boundaries, idle recovery, and ordinary task behavior. - Migration 0274 adds conversation fields and constraints. Replay is idempotent and preserves existing development chat history. - This combines the previously reviewed stack at the maintainer's request. Agent Chat remains off by default and is separate from Conference Room. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 Astra (`gpt-6-astra`), with reasoning, code execution, browser tools, and parallel review. The exact context-window size is not exposed in this session. Codex and Claude also ran as test subjects in the linked paid campaign. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(execution): keep blocked wakes waiting without repeated runs (#13236)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Wake admission decides when a task can create an execution run. > - Recovery can prohibit replay while the previous execution needs review. > - Dependency reconciliation kept creating runs before dispatch rejected that same hold. > - Each rejected run added another startup notice without doing useful work. > - This change checks the hold during admission and records repeated automatic waits once. > - Tasks keep their messages and can resume when the current gates permit execution. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Related changes: Refs #13173 (stale completed-task continuations). Refs #12651 (dependency waits during recovery). **What happened?** A blocked task with completed dependencies can remain under a durable execution reconciliation hold. Each scheduler pass created a queued run. Dispatch then cancelled it before the adapter started. The skipped wake did not satisfy dependency wake deduplication, so this repeated and filled the conversation with “Couldn't start” notices. **Expected behavior** A known execution hold creates a waiting diagnostic without a run. Repeated automatic observations share that diagnostic. Clearing the hold permits a new wake only after the other gates pass. New comments remain available for the next eligible execution. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Assign a blocked task with a completed blocker. 2. Give the task an active reconciliation action, or a resolved action whose automatic recovery evidence still prohibits replay. 3. Run dependency reconciliation repeatedly. 4. Observe repeated cancelled pre-start runs on the base branch. This branch creates no runs while held and admits work after the effective hold clears. ## What Changed - Check effective execution holds under the issue admission lock before inserting runs. Keep the final dispatch check for races. - Share automatic wait diagnostics across producers, wake keys, and service restarts. Apply the helper to reconciliation, dependencies, pause holds, availability, budgets, and disabled heartbeats. - Preserve ordinary comment and interaction receipts during execution holds. Prevent release from draining them while replay is blocked. Keep external-chat receipt authorization intact. - Group empty pre-start reconciliation cancellations into a neutral waiting notice. Keep started runs and the full run history. - Document the waiting contract and add database-backed, UI, and browser regressions. - Stabilize two existing verification tests: allow the asynchronous chat lease transition a bounded five-second wait, and accept either legitimate damaged-session refusal while retaining exact archive-evidence assertions. ## Verification Passed targeted tests: - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-issue-liveness-escalation.test.ts server/src/modules/wake-queue/adapters/postgres.test.ts` — 28 tests. - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/components/TaskChatThread.test.tsx` — covered in the initial combined test run; UI suite passed. - Run-dispatch adapter tests passed in the combined gate regression run. - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/durable-chat-wakeup.test.ts` — 41 tests, including held receipt replay, promotion, and revoked access. - `PAPERCLIP_E2E_PORT=3294 pnpm test:e2e tests/e2e/acp-stop-continuation.spec.ts` — all 3 browser scenarios pass. Repeated held messages create no additional runs or provider prompts and do not replay writes. - `pnpm check:token-gates` - `pnpm check:module-boundaries` - `git diff --check` `pnpm -r typecheck` and `pnpm build` pass. The full local `pnpm test:run` invocation did not finish green: it encountered exhausted local PostgreSQL shared-memory slots, a missing fresh-worktree runner test binary, and tests loaded across in-flight edits. The affected chat/database suites passed on rerun (81 tests), and the targeted lifecycle/recovery verification passed (3 tests). After building the runner test binary, the full native session suite also passed (37 tests). Final-head [CI run 34621288475](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34621288475) passed on `8659618b0ed2b98df002a28f4c1bd97321b0db04`, including all server/workspace test shards, all three browser shards, runner verification, typecheck, build, release dry run, and the aggregate verification gates. All 31 reported checks passed; the two conditional Storybook checks were skipped as intended. Greptile reviewed that exact commit at 5/5 with no unresolved review threads. ## Risks The wait record is diagnostic only. It must never count as a delivered wake or bypass a current gate. Tests cover repeated and concurrent admission, resolved no-replay evidence, a remaining dependency after hold clearance, deferred comments, and release gating. Explicit user requests and authorized chat receipts do not share automatic diagnostics. No migration or historical data deletion is required. Existing provider retry budgets remain unchanged. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex. The runtime does not expose the exact hosted snapshot ID or context-window size. Used repository inspection, code editing, command execution, tests, and review tools. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: add experimental native chat connectors (#13038)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - People also ask agents for work in their existing chat tools. > - Each external conversation needs one task and a current authorized source. > - Retries, Stop, and provider failures must not duplicate work or expose private data. > - The first chat PR establishes the opt-in provider and data contracts. > - This PR adds experimental channel integration and its durable control plane. > - Users can request work from connected channels and inspect delivery in Paperclip. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #13100 and #13092. This is the second of exactly two chat PRs. Foundation #13100 is merged and changed 143 files. Runner prerequisite #13092 is also merged. This PR changes 400 files against master, below the 500-file review limit. It contains no wireframe images or HTML galleries. ## What Changed - Add native Slack, GitHub, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, and Discord chat connections. Keep chat disabled unless the operator enables experimental chat connectors. Preserve the production GitHub tool connection and its normal setup path. - Bind each provider bot identity to one immutable Paperclip agent. Bind each admitted external conversation to one task. Paperclip owns tasks, runs, permissions, and audit records. - Add durable admission, per-conversation queues, questions, task controls, progress, final replies, images, files, and delivery receipts. Board comments remain internal unless explicitly sent to the channel. - Check current identity, provider reach, resource access, credentials, runtime generation, and exact source before provider effects. Keep private responses private. Never send raw reasoning, private logs, credentials, or tool arguments. - Hold uncertain sends for explicit audited resolution. Make Board Send-to-channel atomic and idempotent. Keep reconnect and setup credentials in Paperclip secret storage. - Preserve current native-runner authority across retries, lost acknowledgements, and recovery. Keep immutable input and completion contracts separate from newer user input. Receipt reconciliation cannot launch a provider. - Reconcile chat close/new ordering and provider-effect lock order. Audit resource access changes in the same transaction. Submit only the selected resource from each UI toggle so stale pages cannot undo unrelated access changes. - Drain Codex stdout before certifying process exit. Bound the drain with the existing shutdown grace. Preserve observed terminal authority without treating an undrained process as successful or reusable. - Incorporate master `018ca5da` with its ACP Stop, mobile task layout, runner packaging, and official lock changes. Preserve dedicated chat-answer continuations in both directions when ordinary queued comments are adopted after Stop. - Fence late adapter readiness behind an earlier Stop for the same run. Preserve verified cleanup for registered adapters. Handle single Stop, agent pause, duplicate Stops, and failure release without creating a false cancellation receipt. - Incorporate master's `6dd48cad4` wake-queue extraction. Preserve exact failed-chat retry authorization and lineage, retired question-source suppression, and the block on generic recovery that would discard the admitted source. Fresh deferred input retains its separate promotion path. - Incorporate master `2a05b5ed3` and its queue-admission extraction, simplified transaction ports, and separate runner CI job. Preserve exact durable receipts, actor separation, and dedicated-answer isolation through the new module. A failed receipt insert rolls back the accompanying deferred-wake merge. ## Verification Current head: `afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a`, incorporating master `2a05b5ed3457ea33efd6895520447d1d97fe98d8`. The conflicts are resolved. This successor fixes two test-harness boundaries exposed by CI: per-case route-module preparation and actual durable-save completion before intentional runner termination. Production code and all existing test/turn deadlines are unchanged. [Exact-head Greptile review](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/pull/13038#issuecomment-5587250594) is **5/5**, completed September 10 at 13:20:55 UTC, with no actionable findings or open review threads. [Fresh exact-head CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34481724341) passes **all 24 jobs**, including Build and both required aggregates. Normal exact-head guarded merge was attempted and rejected by the remaining branch approval policy: CODEOWNER review is required and no human approval is present. Normal **squash auto-merge is enabled** as of September 10 at 13:36:26 UTC. Requested CODEOWNERS have been notified; no approval bypass or self-approval was used. Earlier-head results below remain historical evidence, not qualification of this successor. - Final exact-head Linux evidence: 995/995 chat integration cases; 36/36 agent-skills routes; 35/35 runner live-session cases, including real process kill/resume; 1948 runner Vitest cases with three existing benchmark/platform guards; 870/870 API-authority cases; and 104 browser cases with four existing optional skips. Rust, conformance/replay, full repository build, typecheck, canary, all server/workspace shards, and both required aggregates pass with normal CI concurrency. Earlier failed attempts remain recorded below. - Latest test-only qualification: 141/141 route/permissions/authentication cases pass in separate cold forks, with plain server types and independent review clear. The real-runner suite passes 35/35, with plain runner types and independent review clear. A controlled premature-save acknowledgement fails as expected; matching ownership/effect/process evidence, rejected saves, real turn outcome, test abort, and pre-kill liveness are covered. No local reproduction of the original CI scheduling failure is claimed. The preceding [CI run](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34479680858) passes 21/24 jobs, including all 995 Linux chat cases and browser aggregate (104 passed, four existing optional skips); only Build, the skills serialized shard, and the required verification aggregate fail. Its exact-head Greptile review was 5/5. Both failed job logs are retained. - Final fixture qualification: all eight focused Discord cases and all 995 chat integration cases pass. The exact modal statement/PID is observed before taking the real connection lock; the test then proves its actual blocking relationship before mutation. Original SQL execution, provider behavior, negative assertions, and 1s/15s timeouts remain unchanged. Independent review is clear and test/production hashes remain frozen. The preceding [CI attempt](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34477184777) passed 22 jobs, including Build/runner, typecheck, canary, all other test shards, and browser aggregate (104 passed, four existing optional skips); the two fixture failures and failed verification aggregate remain recorded, not relabeled as a pass. - Current queue-module composition: 308/308 recovery/batching/queue/Stop tests; 995/995 full chat integration; 89/89 module tests, including real PostgreSQL receipt-insert rollback; 24/24 workflow/module-boundary tests; plain server and UI types. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass in 1.4 minutes. Fresh databases, no skips or retries, stable reviewed source hashes. The initial boundary failure is retained; its no-op service wrapper was removed without changing recovery context or weakening the check. An exploratory standalone test-directory typecheck fails because its new upstream transformation config is not a standalone typechecking project; standard CI/build does not invoke it, and no configuration was weakened to suppress those diagnostics. - The preceding head `e02a63d462ce5d47433b0aeb632bb6fd20aab1ba` passed [all 24 CI jobs](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34436462958) and exact-head Greptile review at 5/5. Required CODEOWNER review prevented its normal merge before master advanced again. - Final extracted-module composition: 307/307 recovery, batching, queue and Stop-control tests; 995/995 full chat integration; 49/49 module tests including eight PostgreSQL adapter cases; and 19/19 issue-update tests. Plain server types pass. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass in 1.3 minutes. Fresh databases, no skips or retries in these cohorts, frozen source hashes, and independent review clear. - The preceding head `3e4e1c1c` passes [all PR CI jobs](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/34415826820), including Build and required `ci / verify` and `ci / e2e`. Both the original Rust failure and the previously load-sensitive lineage fixture pass with unchanged Linux concurrency. Master advanced afterward and required this reconciliation. - Final master composition: 448/448 focused UI tests, 186/186 adapter tests, 24/24 queue/control tests, and 11/11 packaging tests. Plain UI, server, shared, and adapter types pass. Token gates and diff checks pass. Independent server and UI reviews are clear. - Stop-registration regression: both real-service cases fail against exact `a95` source and pass with the fix. The full corrected recovery/control suite passes 265/265. Duplicate-owner and failed-Stop controls also pass. Plain server types pass. The readiness barrier prevents provider startup without adding an acknowledgment to an already terminal run. - Final qualification strengthens terminal-field equality and repeats both affected cases successfully on a fresh database. All four actual local process/ACP browser paths pass again in 1.3 minutes, without skips or retries. The final screenshot shows Cancelled, a paused subtree, retained input, and no error toast. - Two new actual-service regressions fail before the merge fix. They prove that queued-comment adoption could consume a dedicated chat answer or add unrelated input to that answer. The fixed four-case cohort passes, including ordinary upstream continuation and adapter Stop controls. Full recovery passes 257/257. All four actual local process/ACP Stop browser flows pass in 1.4 minutes, without skips or retries, on a fresh database. - The unchanged runner artifact was qualified with 171/171 transport tests, 870/870 API-authority tests, conformance 1/1, and replay 11/11. Six controlled reader tests prove the exit/drain repair. Its local serial Rust workspace passed 546 top-level cases plus two invoked helpers; the later passing Linux CI supplies default-concurrency evidence. - Prior exact-source full chat integration passes 995/995. Settings regressions cover concurrent stale pages, 501 destinations, pending state, rejected updates, and explicit retry. These deterministic tests do not prove live provider behavior. - Retained failed attempts and their causes are in the [qualification log](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-08-chat-queue-and-webhook-repair.md). The first merge adapter run timed out while macOS slept for 290 seconds. Its unchanged repeat passed with a temporary sleep guard. No assertion, deadline, or CI gate was weakened. Review commands include `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts src/__tests__/issue-queued-comments-routes.test.ts` and `pnpm exec playwright test --config tests/e2e/playwright.config.ts tests/e2e/acp-stop-continuation.spec.ts`. Database suites require fresh disposable databases. See the [browser runbook](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-04-chat-adapters-browser-e2e-runbook.md) for provider setup and separate live acceptance steps. ## Risks - This remains experimental. Deterministic tests and bounded live evidence do not establish every provider feature, tenant, permission layout, or media shape. Teams work-tenant qualification is still open. - Failed and uncertain provider effects remain visible and can require operator action. A transport receipt does not prove recipient visibility. - Native controller and runner artifacts must remain compatible. Preserve lease ownership, terminal authority, source binding, and quarantine during future changes. - Access and audit rows commit together, but activity notifications remain best-effort. This is not a new durable event outbox. - The PR operation does not deploy a live server, replace its runner, or change provider permissions. Remaining live qualification is documented in the [temporary handoff](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/afe19299d06253cb628eb398e91d1200ea9f412a/doc/plans/chat-adapters/2026-09-08-open-qualification-followups.md). ## Model Used OpenAI Codex assisted with implementation, tool execution, testing, and review. The work records `gpt-6-astra` assistance. The environment does not report a context-window size. No private reasoning traces are included. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): repair direct live provider bootstrap (#12932)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip runs AI agents through qualified provider backends. > - The direct live eval workflow builds one immutable Runner runtime for every matrix cell. > - The workflow reinstalled the packed Runner with npm. > - That install discarded pnpm patches and selected provider dependencies outside the qualified lock. > - The first pnpm deployment model also placed its virtual-store marker at the wrong level; a real deployment keeps `.pnpm` beside the scoped Runner package. > - AgentCore enforced the current context-aware harness but the direct eval CLI did not supply the production v3 runtime context that harness requires. > - This pull request preserves the qualified dependency graph, resolves the real deployment layout, and makes direct evals exercise the production runtime-context contract. > - The benefit is that live eval cells reach their provider turn with the same artifacts and context contract that Paperclip qualified. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs: #12931 **What happened?** The full direct live eval campaign failed every ACPX cell during `session.open`. The portable runtime had an incorrect dependency root. Its npm install also discarded the qualified ACP server patches. AgentCore cells first failed because Runner enforced `aws-agentcore-harness-v1` while the provisioned stack and eval profile use `aws-agentcore-harness-context-v2`; after aligning that revision, the direct eval CLI still omitted the required v3 runtime context. **Expected behavior** The direct eval runtime must preserve the frozen pnpm dependency graph and patched provider bytes. Runner, server validation, OpenAPI, and the deployed AgentCore stack must use one qualification revision. Direct eval attempts must supply the same immutable native runtime-context contract as production. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Dispatch `Runner Direct Live Protocol Evals` from `master`. 2. Select an ACPX Claude, ACPX Codex, or AgentCore roster. 3. Observe a pre-turn provider bootstrap failure. **Paperclip version or commit** `d96452db059338b329b458ba8fe359fef72f1363` **Deployment mode** GitHub Actions on the RunsOn Linux x64 fleet. ## What Changed - Build the reusable direct-eval runtime with `pnpm deploy --prod`. - Resolve ACPX dependencies from the actual scoped-package layout of a self-contained pnpm deployment. - Align AgentCore configuration and qualification checks on `aws-agentcore-harness-context-v2`. - Materialize a minimal immutable v3 runtime context for each isolated direct eval attempt. - Add workflow, package-authority, runtime-context, Rust, and server regression coverage. - Document the qualified packaging, runtime-context, and AgentCore revision contracts. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/paperclip-runner typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/paperclip-runner exec vitest run src/live/runnerd-codex-transport.test.ts` (70 tests) - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/paperclip-runner exec vitest run src/cli/eval-session-contract.test.ts` (14 tests) - Focused Runner contract tests (36 tests) - Focused server profile tests (47 tests) - Focused Rust managed-provider and native-selector tests (19 tests) - `node --test packages/paperclip-runner/scripts/runner-protocol-eval-workflow-security.test.mjs` - `actionlint .github/workflows/runner-protocol-live-evals.yml` - A local `pnpm deploy --prod` produced both qualified ACP server digests. - A Linux reproduction of the first follow-up smoke identified the real deployment root and the missing AgentCore runtime context. ## Risks The AgentCore revision change rejects profiles that still use the obsolete v1 value. This is intentional because the provisioned context-aware harness and current eval profile use v2. Direct eval prompts now receive the same fixed runtime-context preamble as production, so behavior scores may move; that is the intended qualification surface. The workflow package layout changes, but tests assert the new entrypoint and dependency root. This change does not modify the browser full-stack E2E workflow. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex with GPT-5.6. The context-window size is not exposed in this session. fix(runner): recover native sessions across restarts (#12845)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The Paperclip Runner keeps durable run and provider state outside one server process. > - A server restart can leave that runner alive or can interrupt it after a provider checkpoint. > - The old startup path used handoff intent and PID evidence, but it did not reconstruct native ownership. > - That gap could block the issue, create a replacement run, or start duplicate provider work. > - This pull request adds durable same-run recovery for coordinated and uncoordinated restarts. > - The benefit is exact recovery of the run, runner, session, provider, steering, and finalization state. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #9628. That pull request added earlier local-adapter hot-restart work. This change adds native PRP authority reconstruction and same-run provider resume. Refs #10935. That pull request handles missing hot-restart snapshots. This change also supports hard restarts with no snapshot. Refs #11624. That pull request prevents unsafe retry after an adopted legacy process exits. This change reconciles native terminal evidence before provider recovery. Refs #12070. That pull request improves process liveness checks. This change also binds recovery to a process-start fingerprint and fails closed on ambiguity. **What happened?** The server could record hot-restart intent, but startup did not rebuild native runner ownership. A live runner could not re-register its PRP authority. A dead runner could not resume the exact native and provider session on the same heartbeat run. Generic recovery could then block the issue or create replacement work. **Expected behavior** A live native runner must reconnect with the same PID and logical identities. A dead runner must resume the same durable session and heartbeat run with only a new operating-system PID. A proposed or terminal result must finalize once before any provider turn starts. Ambiguous process or session evidence must stay blocked without a signal or duplicate spawn. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Start a Paperclip Runner heartbeat and wait for an active provider turn. 2. Restart only the Paperclip server, with or without a hot-restart marker. 3. Observe that the old startup path does not reconstruct the native control-plane authority. 4. Kill both the server and runner after a provider checkpoint. 5. Observe that the old path cannot resume the exact native session on the original heartbeat run. **Paperclip version or commit** The defect was reproduced from commit `1991f31fd53e7f7794d5c2e4b93be384ade2b41d`. This branch is rebased onto the current `master`. **Deployment mode** Local development and self-hosted server deployments that use the local Paperclip Runner. ## What Changed - Added correlated hot-restart requests and version-compatible native handoff fields. - Added controller boot identity, process-start identity, controller generation, recovery state, request id, and bounded history to the native finalization ledger. - Added transactional recovery claims for live-runner reattach, dead-runner resume, and incomplete bootstrap. - Added fail-closed ownership takeover rules and process identity validation. - Added live runner adoption to the local runner transport without a duplicate spawn. - Added same-run provider checkpoint resume and legacy retry-row compatibility. - Reconciled proposed and terminal results before runner or provider recovery. - Bound the HTTP and PRP listener before startup recovery and delayed scheduling and generic reapers until classification completes. - Added restart-aware health diagnostics, run-log recovery transitions, durable runner diagnostics, and bounded shutdown finalizer draining. - Moved restart-survivable diagnostics into runner-owned, pre-redacted bounded writes; raw stdout and stderr are never persisted. - Added process-start fencing for controller, runner, and provider PIDs; startup classifies every candidate without an implicit cap. - Added crash-recoverable, contention-safe development restart-request coordination and failed-startup listener cleanup. - Added a credential-free real-process restart suite for eight restart, scale, and identity scenarios. - Documented native restart operation, persistence, diagnostics, and verification. ## Verification - The documented native restart commands passed. They ran eight real-process/database recovery scenarios and the live runner adoption transport test. - Native executor tests passed: 111 tests. - Heartbeat recovery tests passed: 124 tests. - Hot restart, health, and shutdown tests passed: 52 tests. - The broader affected server suite passed: 350 tests. - Focused native recovery and startup tests passed: 49 tests. - Runner transport and control-plane tests passed: 63 tests. - Runner-owned diagnostic tests passed for write-time bounding, credential redaction, private file modes, and raw stream non-persistence. - Development restart coordination tests passed: 11 tests. - Database migration checks and the partial-application/replay regression test passed. - Server, database, and Paperclip Runner typechecks passed. - `git diff --check` passed. - Full Paperclip PR CI passed, including build, canary, all five general server shards, all five serialized server shards, all three browser E2E shards, workspace suites, and release-registry verification. - Greptile completed at 5/5 with no outstanding findings, recommendations, follow-ups, or open review threads. ## Risks - Moderate risk. This changes startup ordering and ownership transfer for active native runs. - The migration adds nullable columns and does not rewrite existing rows. - Recovery fails closed when process or durable session identity is incomplete or contradictory. - The first implementation supports the local Paperclip Runner. Remote targets keep their existing behavior. - The real-process suite covers cleanup and asserts that no runner or provider process survives each test. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. feat(runner): add managed provider backends (#12699)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The Paperclip Runner provides durable, provider-neutral agent execution. > - The current stack supports qualified local providers but omits the managed provider paths from the integration branch. > - Claude Managed Agents and AWS AgentCore need explicit profile qualification, durable recovery, usage accounting, and cleanup controls. > - This pull request adds those managed backends as the third part of the Runner parity stack. > - The benefit is managed execution without weakening the default-off Runner rollout gate. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting: Runner, server orchestration, database profiles, CLI, and adapter configuration UI. **Problem or motivation** The current Runner stack cannot select or execute the managed Claude Agents API or AWS Bedrock AgentCore Harness backends. It also lacks qualified profile storage and recovery checks for those remote resources. **Proposed solution** Add qualified managed and remote profiles, API and CLI management, exact provider selection, durable lifecycle handling, cumulative usage accounting, bounded cleanup, and retention acknowledgement. Keep `enableNativeRunner` default-off. **Alternatives considered** A direct copy of the old integration branch was rejected because its provider contracts, model values, credential flow, and migration history no longer match the current base. A single large parity pull request was also rejected because stacked review keeps each subsystem bounded. **Roadmap alignment** This continues the existing Runner architecture and rollout work. It does not introduce a separate execution system. **Additional context** This pull request is based on the merged #12691 and #12685 stack. It also closes the delayed security-review findings reported on #12691 by binding qualified ACPX and OpenCode launch artifacts to the bytes actually executed. A GitHub search for managed agent, AgentCore, and Claude managed work found no duplicate public issue or pull request. ## What Changed - Add Claude Managed Agents and AWS AgentCore provider executors to runnerd. - Add qualified managed and remote profile storage, routes, OpenAPI contracts, CLI commands, and migration 0237. - Validate profile ownership, enabled state, exact qualified revision, model, agent version, and secret binding before persistence and recovery. - Persist durable provider session and owned skill state for restart-safe cleanup. - Reconcile uncertain create responses and delete remote sessions before owned skills. - Track cumulative provider usage and enforce positive session spend caps. - Recover interrupted AgentCore usage at the next turn boundary by charging the prior invocation ceiling exactly once; keep the session gated until an explicit monotonic budget raise. - Isolate AgentCore AWS configuration from host profiles and credential-process/SSO configuration while preserving workload identity. - Require OpenCode 1.18.17 and fixed build-owned provider-pack artifact paths; remove the ambient executable override. - Snapshot and content-verify ACPX and OpenCode commands, scripts, and provider executables before launch. Linux executes sealed inherited descriptors; macOS uses authenticated private snapshots with retry-safe rematerialization at the spawn boundary. - Persist canonical ACPX and OpenCode launch-profile digests, reject drift across fresh recovery, and make recovery failures sticky. - Close and journal unsafe ACPX active-turn recovery before any provider bootstrap or reconnect. - Add managed provider fields to the Runner configuration UI and permission projection. - Preserve the default-off `enableNativeRunner` experimental flag. ## Verification - `pnpm -r typecheck` - `pnpm build` - Focused managed server, database, CLI, Runner TypeScript, Rust, Claude, AgentCore, ACPX, OpenCode, process-supervisor, and durable-recovery tests passed. - `cargo test -p paperclip-runner-core --lib --locked` (160 tests) - `cargo check --workspace --all-targets --locked` - Native Codex integration tests passed (60 tests); native provider tests passed (7 tests); server native-runtime tests passed (87 tests). - Verified-launch replacement, nested-spawn retry, exact-version, profile-drift, sticky-failure, and no-bootstrap active-recovery tests passed. - `git diff --check` - The PR changes 91 files. `pnpm-lock.yaml` is unchanged. The Rust workspace lockfile adds the approved `rustix` dependency used for safe descriptor handling while `#![forbid(unsafe_code)]` remains enabled. ## Risks - The provider APIs can change while they are in beta. Exact qualification and fail-closed recovery checks limit drift. - Remote cleanup can fail after a partial create. Durable ownership inventories and retry-safe deletion preserve recovery state. - Migration 0237 adds profile tables. The generated migration and snapshot pass the repository migration checks. - Managed execution can incur provider cost. Positive default spend caps and explicit retention acknowledgement limit accidental use. - An interrupted AgentCore invocation without final metadata is conservatively charged to its active session ceiling. This can overstate cost, but cannot undercount it; later work requires an explicit budget increase. - Linux qualified launches use sealed memory descriptors. macOS lacks executable-descriptor APIs, so the runner uses owner-only private snapshots and minimizes linked-path lifetime; hostile same-UID processes remain outside the documented local-host trust boundary. - The global Runner feature remains default-off. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. fix(runner): harden dormant provider boundaries (#12654)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Paperclip Runner currently enables only the Codex production path. > - The package also contains dormant OpenCode and ACPX provider boundaries. > - Dormant boundaries must still fail safe before later activation work. > - Provider children must not inherit unrelated server secrets or host homes. > - Permission defaults must require interaction instead of broad automatic approval. > - This pull request hardens those boundaries without activating them. > - The benefit is a safer base for later provider-specific runnerd work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** This improves the inactive OpenCode and ACPX provider boundary in Paperclip Runner. **Subsystem affected** The adapter permission contract, Runner provider environment, and native execution input builder. **Current behavior** Dormant OpenCode code can inherit the full server environment. Its default permission mode allows operations. ACPX also defaults to broad approval. The provider guard can accept inherited object property names. **Proposed behavior** Use exact provider identifiers. Use interactive defaults. Allow only required OpenCode environment keys. Reject invalid proxy permission modes. **Reason and benefit** This reduces accidental authority and secret exposure before future provider activation. **Breaking changes** No production provider is activated. Codex runtime selection and Codex credential-home discovery do not change. Dormant OpenCode and ACPX callers that omit permission modes now receive safer defaults. ## What Changed - Change dormant OpenCode and ACPX permission defaults to interactive modes. - Reject prototype property names as provider identifiers. - Default dormant ACPX input to the qualified Codex agent profile. - Add an explicit OpenCode runner environment allowlist. - Exclude host homes, server credentials, database values, and Node injection options. - Add a fail-closed OpenCode proxy permission parser. - Add focused tests for defaults, filtering, and invalid values. ## Verification GitHub Actions must run: - Adapter utility tests. - Paperclip Runner tests, type checks, and build. - Server native runtime tests. - Repository test, type-check, build, policy, and security gates. No local test command was run. The repository owner requested GitHub-only verification. ## Risks Future OpenCode credential providers must add required variables to the allowlist through review. The safer defaults can pause dormant internal scenarios that relied on implicit broad approval. Production Codex behavior is unchanged. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex with the GPT-5 agent model. The work used high reasoning, repository inspection, tool use, and parallel security review. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

feat(runner): add remote execution substrate (#12638)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Paperclip Runner gives native runs a durable and governed execution path. > - The current native path runs on the control-plane host. > - Remote environments need an authenticated execution-target contract. > - The contract must not change direct adapters or enable new runtimes by default. > - This pull request adds the remote execution substrate and Daytona ingress. > - The benefit is a bounded base for later remote runner transport work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #12616. Refs #12352. **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting. This change touches runner transport, server orchestration, plugin contracts, and shared settings. **Problem or motivation** Native execution cannot resolve an authenticated runner ingress through a remote environment. The server also lacks one provider-neutral contract for remote execution targets. **Proposed solution** Add a default-off runner preview ingress capability. Add transport-neutral runner connectivity. Add remote execution target and lifecycle handling. Add a Daytona ingress implementation with redacted credentials. **Alternatives considered** A provider-specific server path would duplicate orchestration and authorization. A public endpoint without an environment contract would weaken the trust boundary. **Roadmap alignment** This work supports the Cloud and Sandbox agents milestone. It also supports self-healing runs and governed tool access. ## What Changed - Added execution-target traits for local, SSH, and sandbox environments. - Added plugin RPC contracts for runner ingress endpoints. - Added authenticated Daytona preview ingress. - Added transport-neutral PRP outbound connections. - Added remote runner artifact verification and fail-closed provider selection. - Added bounded native session resume, cancellation, and lifecycle recovery. - Preserved Codex-only selection for fresh experimental runner starts. - Preserved all direct adapter execution and finalization paths. - Removed stale Pi provider-pack requirements that security review rejected. - Kept the rollout controls off by default. - Did not change pnpm-lock.yaml, Cargo, database migrations, or GitHub workflows. ## Verification - GitHub Actions will run the repository test, typecheck, build, security, and policy gates. - Focused tests cover ingress validation, redaction, execution targets, remote lifecycle, cancellation, resume, and legacy adapter selection. - Local tests were not run. The requested verification policy uses GitHub Actions for this series. - `git diff --check origin/master...HEAD` passes. - The diff contains 52 files. ## Risks - Remote execution crosses a trust boundary. - The implementation validates target capabilities, artifact digests, provider-pack pins, and connection metadata. - The feature remains default-off. - Fresh native selection remains Codex-only. - Existing direct adapters remain on the legacy path. - This PR does not yet make remote Codex runnable. The next PR adds the Rust WSS and TLS transport. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex with GPT-5.6. The work used high-reasoning agent mode, repository tools, GitHub tools, and parallel code-audit agents. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with Fixes: / Closes / Refs OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

feat(runner): integrate Codex native execution (#12616)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source control plane for teams of AI agents. > - Agent runs currently use direct adapters and their established finalization paths. > - The new runner package needs one production integration before it can execute a real provider through the server. > - That integration must not change direct adapters or expose unsupported providers. > - The rollout must also preserve native runs that were already recorded when the feature flag changes. > - This pull request adds a default-off, Codex-only native execution path and its authority boundary. > - The benefit is a recoverable production vertical slice with explicit compatibility guards. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting server orchestration and adapter selection. **Problem or motivation** The runner package exists, but the server cannot yet start and recover a governed Codex run through it. A careless integration could also route existing direct adapters into the native runtime or lose cancellation and finalization state. **Proposed solution** Add a hidden `paperclip_runner` adapter for Codex. Keep it behind the default-off instance flag. Bind native execution, resume, cancellation, semantic tool authority, and finalization to the recorded company, issue, run, and coordinator identities. Leave every direct adapter on its existing path. **Alternatives considered** A multi-provider launch was rejected because only Codex has the complete production bridge in this series. Replacing direct adapter execution was rejected because the runner remains experimental. **Roadmap alignment** This work supports governed tool access, action attribution, and self-healing runs. It keeps the integration narrow and default-off. ## What Changed - Add the Codex-only native session executor and persisted resumption path. - Add run-scoped semantic tool projection, authorization, receipts, and idempotency. - Add audited native cancellation with durable issue and coordinator binding. - Add result fencing so a recorded result cannot reacquire the provider and run twice. - Reject fresh runner starts when the rollout flag is off while preserving recorded native recovery. - Keep direct adapters outside native status, cancellation, record creation, and finalization. - Add focused conformance, recovery, cancellation, status, portability, and compatibility coverage. ## Verification - GitHub Actions is the authoritative test environment for this large stack. - The PR policy and lightweight stack checks run while this is a middle PR. - The full required suite runs when this PR becomes the lowest unmerged or top PR. - Greptile will review this exact delta after the branch is pushed. ## Risks - The main risk is routing a legacy adapter into native execution. Runtime selection and heartbeat tests cover that boundary. - The next risk is stale or cross-company cancellation. Durable binding checks and transactional audit persistence cover it. - The adapter remains hidden and default-off. Only Codex is admitted. - There are no database migration, lockfile, or GitHub workflow changes in this PR. ## Stack 1.
