fix: pass healthy managed Runner connection tests (#17965)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The board tests an agent's selected runtime and AI account. > - Cloud prepares and verifies the managed Runner runtime before execution. > - Its remote ACPX preflight reports that deferred step as a warning. > - The test keeps the warning after the selected account passes its hello probe. > - The board then asks the user to fix a healthy connection. > - This change makes that specific managed step informational after account verification. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A Cloud agent's Claude connection test passes with Legacy. With Runner, the same account completes the Claude hello probe but shows "Connection needs attention." The only warning says that remote runtime preparation must occur before launch. **Expected behavior** A verified managed connection passes when its only warning concerns runtime preparation that Paperclip performs before execution. Failed authentication and actionable runtime checks retain their results. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Select a working Claude subscription on a Cloud-managed sandbox. 2. Select Runner and run the connection test. 3. Observe a successful Claude hello probe and a warning result. Related: #17961 covers managed OpenRouter model verification. #15880 adds persistent computer runtime interfaces. Neither changes this Cloud connection-test status. ## What Changed - Recognize the deferred ACPX runtime check after a provider hello or live API-key verification succeeds. - Report that check as informational for Cloud-managed sandbox connections. - Preserve every other warning and error, including unexplained warning results. - Add service regressions and document the test/launch boundary. ## Verification - Red: the healthy managed-Claude case returned `warn` after a successful hello. The regression fails before the change and passes after it. - **116 tests pass** across connection verdicts, environment-test HTTP routes and adapter registration. Scoped server TypeScript and the server build pass, including the native Runner build. - Negative cases cover rejected credentials, missing hello receipts, missing runtime packages, actionable or unexplained warnings, self-hosted instances, SSH targets and unexplained provider warning results. API-key success requires live provider re-verification. - Operator evidence confirms that the reported test lease was released with cleanup successful. The agent's saved adapter is Legacy. No saved account, agent or environment setting was changed. - A clean local install hit a frozen-lockfile `patchedDependencies` configuration mismatch. The scoped checks reuse installed workspace dependencies. The final commit has passing hosted CI, including clean-install typecheck, tests and build, and Apex 5/5 with no unresolved findings. - A cold HTTP-suite module load reached the 30-second setup limit while other checks ran. All 54 HTTP cases pass on retry, and the full focused run passes 116 tests without changing assertions or time limits. - No staging deployment is claimed. This change classifies the connection-test result; it does not claim that a native Runner hello turn was performed. ## Risks - This status change is limited to a verified Cloud-managed sandbox ACPX connection and the exact deferred check code. The provider's successful receipt is required. - Runtime package preparation and verification still execute before agent work. A connection test does not replace those launch checks. - There is no schema, permission or credential change. Local, SSH and plugin task probes keep their existing verdicts. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository inspection, tool use and code execution. The session does not expose its exact serving model ID or context window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Prepare agent-owned environments during hiring (#17761)
<!-- entire-trail-link-start --> https://entire.com/gh/paperclipai/-/trails/1/changes/paperclip/1 <!-- entire-trail-link-end --> ## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages agents and their execution environments. > - New agent setup saves an inactive agent before model connection tests. > - Some plugins need that agent to prepare its execution resource. > - The wizard tested without the agent ID, while the setup hold prevented preparation. > - Environment changes also discarded the selected model account. > - This change prepares the saved draft during setup and keeps normal execution held. > - Users can test the prepared resource before they finish hiring. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** An agent-owned plugin environment could not acquire a test lease during hiring. Changing environments also returned the user to Connect and cleared the selected account. **Expected behavior** Keep the selected account, invalidate its test, and prepare the saved agent resource in the background. Test that same agent before finishing setup. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Start a new Claude or Codex agent and select a saved account. 2. Change to an agent-owned plugin environment. 3. Try to finish setup or reconnect the account. Related: #17750 defers probes until after hire submission. This change implements preparation during the wizard instead. The related PR search and ROADMAP review found no other implementation of this setup preparation path. ## What Changed - Add the optional `requiresAgent` driver declaration. Require agent lifecycle participation when it is set. - Prepare saved drafts on creation or environment changes. Keep the setup hold and wait in `verifying` without background verification scans. - Bind tests to the saved agent. Return a warning without allocating a lease when the required agent is absent or still preparing. - Preserve the account and configuration step when the environment changes. Save the selection and invalidate the old test. - Show active preparation and support authorized retries. Keep approval, company, budget, and normal task admission controls. - Document the contract and cover lifecycle, lease, manifest, and wizard behavior. ## Verification - Server and UI TypeScript checks passed. - 112 wizard and setup helper tests passed. The shared manifest suite passed. - 123 lifecycle, policy, lease, and environment-test API cases passed after the approval-gate fix. The diagnostic and driver suites and all 80 agent adapter route tests also passed. - Token gates, module boundaries, map validation, and whitespace checks passed. - All 66 lifecycle/policy cases passed after the stopping-draft permission fix. The new real-DB route case verifies creator success, other-creator denial, and refusal to complete a hire while stopping. - Full workspace typecheck and build were attempted. Both stop at the unchanged Rust Runner step because Cargo is not installed on this host. - CI on |

fix: preserve qualified snapshots during native setup validation (#17445)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Native agent setup can validate a selected sandbox before the agent runs. > - A qualified snapshot binds the saved environment and resolved runtime to an immutable provider snapshot. > - Setup validation changes lease retention so each test starts fresh and leaves an archived sandbox for inspection. > - The test passed that changed config as the saved environment, which made valid snapshot proof appear stale. > - This pull request keeps saved qualification separate from the two test retention settings. > - Native setup can use the qualified snapshot and still clean up its test lease. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Related: #15997, #17262. **What happened?** Native setup validation can return `environment_lease_acquire_failed` for a sandbox whose saved snapshot qualification is valid. The test changes `reuseLease` and `archiveOnRelease` before the runtime checks the saved configuration fingerprint. **Expected behavior** The test must qualify the original saved environment, acquire a fresh lease from its immutable snapshot, and preserve archive-on-release in the lease metadata. A changed image, provider, runtime config, or stale proof must still fail. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Save a Daytona snapshot environment with `reuseLease: true` and `archiveOnRelease: false`. 2. Store valid company-scoped snapshot qualification for the saved and resolved runtime configurations. 3. Run native agent setup validation against that environment. 4. Observe that the validation retention overrides invalidate the saved fingerprint before a provider lease is acquired. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced from master at `785d54636e1c8513ee5503d602daf6a5ee1970d6`. The fix is based on `62f60bf158746c5807763778326b1eba4f2ed18a`. **Deployment mode** Any server with a qualified native Daytona sandbox environment. ## What Changed - Pass the original saved environment to native setup lease acquisition. - Allow only `reuseLease` and `archiveOnRelease` to differ in the run configuration. Apply those fields after saved snapshot qualification. - Keep both retention fields in the acquired lease metadata so provider release still archives the test sandbox. - Add service-to-runtime cases for valid and stale proof, immutable snapshot selection, fresh lease retention, release behavior, and rejected non-retention overrides. - Extend the route regression to require the original saved configuration. ## Verification - The focused route regression failed before the fix because acquisition had no `configuredEnvironment`. - All 101 focused route, snapshot, and orchestration tests passed on the exact rebased head. - Full repository typecheck and build passed on exact head `15e13e119941090e85638005de54b2d14ea52c00`. - The local database regression could not start PostgreSQL because macOS could not allocate system semaphores. The full `pnpm test:run` attempt also reported database startup failures and was stopped as incomplete. Neither attempt is counted as passing. - Exact-head Linux CI passed all 179 environment runtime integration tests, including the seven new regression cases. Its server shard passed 3,635 tests with 16 existing skips. All exact-head CI gates passed. The final repository review must also complete before merge. - No live provider or model call is part of this verification. This PR does not deploy the fix. ## Risks The acquisition boundary now accepts two explicit retention-only differences. All other config fields, environment identity, company-scoped proof, resolved runtime fingerprint, and template binding remain subject to the existing checks. Regression cases reject changed snapshot, image, provider, and environment variables before provider dispatch. No schema or API contract changes. No user-facing command or documentation contract changes. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository inspection, code execution, and test tools. The session does not expose an exact backend model identifier or context-window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(runner): make task-capable plugin environments Runner-only (#17380)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - An environment plugin can run Paperclip Runner tasks through a `driver: "plugin"` environment. > - Core lets only the `paperclip_runner` adapter use a plugin environment. > - A Claude agent cannot get onto the Runner there. Runner selection needs a reported platform for Claude, and a plugin target reports none. > - The adapter Test route also checks the driver against the requested harness before it resolves the runner. > - This pull request makes task-capable plugin environments Runner-only and checks the Test driver after runner selection. > - The benefit is that Claude and Codex agents can use a Runner task environment, and the UI cannot produce a legacy agent there. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #17029. Refs #16978. **What happened?** A Claude Code agent with a plugin environment that runs Runner tasks fails the connection test. The error is: `Environment driver "plugin" is not allowed here. Allowed drivers: local, ssh, sandbox`. The Runner selector in Advanced shows Paperclip Runner as unavailable, so the user cannot fix the agent in the form. **Expected behavior** A Claude or Codex agent on that environment uses Paperclip Runner. The connection test passes the driver check. Legacy is not offered, because a legacy adapter cannot run on a plugin environment. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Install an environment plugin whose driver declares `supportsTasks: true`. 2. Create a plugin environment for that driver. 3. Open an agent with the Claude Code harness and select that environment. 4. Click Test. The test fails with the driver error above. **Agent adapter(s) involved** Claude Code, Codex (through Paperclip Runner). **Additional context** Two gates caused the failure: - `agentRunnerAvailability` requires a platform for `claude_local`. A plugin target is `{ driver: "plugin" }`, so Claude resolves to Legacy. - The Test route ran `assertAdapterTestEnvironmentForCompany` with the URL adapter type before `resolveNewAgentRunnerForCompany`. The plugin driver is allowed only for `paperclip_runner`, so the check failed before selection could change the adapter. ## What Changed - Runner target resolution marks a plugin environment as `runnerTasks` when its plugin manifest declares `supportsTasks` for the driver key and has the `environment.drivers.register` capability. The check reads the manifest only. Run admission still verifies a ready plugin and a live worker. - `agentRunnerAvailability` returns Paperclip Runner as the only runner for a `runnerTasks` target. It skips the platform check, because the plugin provisions the host and launches its own pinned Runner. Harnesses that the Runner does not support keep the Legacy result. - The adapter Test route runs the company-binding check first, as before. It runs the driver check after runner selection, with the resolved adapter type. The driver check still runs before secret resolution, leases, and the adapter probe. - A saved adapter that cannot run on the requested environment no longer keeps its saved execution in the Test route. It re-resolves its runner. - `assertAdapterTestEnvironmentBinding` is a new helper that holds the binding half of the guard. `assertAdapterTestEnvironmentForCompany` keeps its behavior and calls it. - The agent form switches a Legacy runner choice to Paperclip Runner when the selected environment offers no Legacy runner. The test and the save then send the Runner choice. - `docs/specs/agent-config-ui.md` records the Runner-only rule and the Run test order. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit` passes. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui exec tsc -b` passes. - Server suites pass: `agent-runner-selection.test.ts`, `agent-test-environment-routes.test.ts`, `agent-permissions-routes.test.ts`, `environment-selection-route-guards.test.ts`, `agent-harness-verification.test.ts`, `plugin-runner-task.integration.test.ts`, `adapter-routes.test.ts`, `adapter-auth-signal-routes.test.ts`, `agent-adapter-validation-routes.test.ts`, `agent-hire-ai-connections.test.ts`. - UI suites pass: `AgentConfigForm.render.test.tsx` and `NewAgent.test.tsx`. - New tests cover these cases: - A task-capable plugin target offers only Paperclip Runner for Codex and Claude. - Claude saves as `paperclip_runner` with ACPX on that target. - A driver without `supportsTasks`, a different driver key, a missing capability, an unknown plugin, or a malformed config keeps the existing plugin target. - The Test route checks the driver against the resolved adapter. - The Test route still rejects a plugin environment for a legacy adapter, before any secret resolution. - A saved adapter re-resolves only when it cannot run on the requested environment. - The form switches a saved or new Legacy choice to Paperclip Runner on a Runner-only environment. - I ran the new route and form tests against the old code. They fail without the change. - The full server `typecheck` script did not complete locally. Its Runner vendor step needs `cargo`, which this machine does not have. CI runs the full script. - I did not run a live plugin environment end to end. ## Risks - Behavior change: Codex on a task-capable plugin environment now offers only Paperclip Runner. Before, the selector also showed Legacy, but Core rejected a legacy save on that environment. No working setup loses an option. - The `runnerTasks` decision reads the plugin manifest. If the plugin is down, the agent still selects the Runner, and the run fails at admission with the existing plugin error. - The adapter auth-signal route still checks the driver with the requested harness. This PR does not change that route. - An explicit Legacy save through the API on a Runner-only environment still fails with the existing driver error. The UI no longer offers that choice. ## Model Used - Claude Opus 5.5 (`claude-opus-5-5`) wrote the change and the tests in Claude Code, with shell, file editing, and local test runs. - Claude Fable 5.1 (`claude-fable-5-1`) did the earlier diagnosis in the same session. - The session does not expose the context window size. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Default new Pi agents to Paperclip Runner (#17142)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Users choose a harness during agent setup. > - Claude, Codex, and OpenCode already receive their qualified Runner default. > - Pi has a qualified native integration but new Pi agents still use the direct adapter. > - This change gives new Pi agents the native default on supported targets. > - Saved agents keep their runner and compatible settings. Legacy remains available in Advanced. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #17120, #14921, #14922, #14923, #14924, and #14956. Related generic default work: #15422. This PR is the separate Pi follow-up to the merged OpenCode change. **Current behavior** Choosing Pi for a new agent saves the direct Pi adapter. The native Pi integration remains behind the generic experimental flag. **Proposed behavior** Default new Pi agents to ACPX Pi on macOS ARM64/x64 and GNU/Linux x64 with supported glibc. Keep unsupported targets and explicit Legacy selections on the direct adapter. Require an explicit provider/model before test or hire. Permit model-free inactive setup drafts. **Reason and benefit** Users choose Pi once and receive its qualified runner. Saved agents retain their identity and settings. Conversions reject unsupported legacy thinking and launch settings instead of dropping them. ## What Changed - Add Pi to the shared platform/default contract and server creation selection. - Admit native Pi without the generic experimental flag. - Preserve provider models, credentials, workspace settings, exact thinking, and saved native policies. - Add Pi runner controls, branding, setup resume, onboarding, built-in configuration, and import handling. - Add managed Pi OpenRouter routing and matching native provider API-key accounts. Keep subscription and custom gateway exclusions. Clear alternate credentials and reject custom Pi provider overrides. - Keep Pi draft models empty instead of applying Claude's default model. - Verify setup against the pinned Pi runtime. For native Pi on the official OpenRouter route, reverify the API key live without requiring a global Legacy Pi CLI. - Match Pi’s bounded controller close window to its native snapshot cleanup and lifetime verification, preserving explicit caller deadlines and the mandatory drain/suspension proof. - Bind Pi sidecars to the package that owns the pinned native assets, including source and vendored server layouts. Other providers retain their existing package authority. - Keep protocol-owned finish/block tools out of the ACPX forwarded catalog. The trusted bridge installs these tools itself; the complete Rust authorization catalog and terminal receipt ledger remain intact. This fixes actual Pi session startup and applies to other ACPX consumers. - Advance Copilot’s shared-source attestation to v58 because it pins the shared files touched by Pi. Preserve immutable v57 bytes and historical decoding; Pi’s own release identity is unchanged. - Add regression coverage and update the paired maps and developer documentation. ## Verification - Passed: full repository typecheck and full production build on final head |

Verify native Runner setup through plugin tasks (#17029)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages work for AI agents. > - An environment plugin can own a Runner task. > - The merged launch-preparation contract lets the execution owner build the provider configuration. > - Core still needs a task process owner and a setup test that uses that configuration. > - This PR connects the task API to the Runner process-owner contract. > - Operators can test a plugin environment before Core sends it task work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Runner, plugin SDK, and agent environment tests. **Problem or motivation** A task-only environment cannot use the shell-based setup path. Core must verify the Runner hello exchange and process cleanup through dedicated task operations. **Proposed solution** Add a lease-bound task driver and use it for a bounded setup probe. Keep heartbeat admission and task execution in #16978. This PR follows the merged launch-preparation contract in #16997. **Alternatives considered** A provider declaration alone cannot prove that Runner and the provider connect. A shell bridge would give the plugin an unnecessary command interface. ## What Changed - Pass structured Runner launch data to process owners. Support an external connection and explicit detach. - Add typed launch authentication checks and checkpoint operations. Check lease, run, project, and retained-task authority. - Connect launch preparation, PRP, termination proof, and credential handoff to the task driver. Reject local environment overrides during installed-account setup. Pass saved-account identity and credential home directly from Core. - Run a short-lived setup probe through the existing agent environment test API. Require a verified provider hello and cleanup. Keep saved Copilot account checks metadata-only through a dedicated task operation. - Update the Copilot source identity because the shared transport source changed. Keep provider behavior and the earlier identity fixture. ## Verification - CI passes on `f987adec7`: 55 successful checks and 5 expected skips. Standard Greptile and Apex are both 5/5 with no open findings. The branch merges cleanly with current master. - Repository typecheck and build pass after the rebase onto the workspace-provider contract. Server typecheck and build also pass after the final setup fix. - The 110 focused lease, SDK, setup, Copilot, and route cases pass after the rebase. All 14 setup cases pass after the final change. These include a real local Runner with a test provider. The saved-agent model-discovery case also passes. - Apex found that Core's relative workspace marker failed the driver path check, and non-Codex sessions omitted the observed model. Both failures were reproduced and fixed. The probe leaves physical workspace selection to plugin preparation. The transport reads each provider's observed model and exposes it to the driver. All 14 setup cases, 6 transport peer cases, and both existing real Runner/OpenCode cases pass. Runner build and server typecheck pass. - The coverage audit removed two redundant cases, repeated fixture code, and two extra real Runner launches. It kept authorization, credential selection, cancellation, lost replies, termination proof, checkpoint identity, and provider setup checks. - The Copilot source-identity check passes. The added-line secret and PII scan passes. The unmerged v52 attestation was regenerated after the shared transport fix. - CI on `13faeff02` caught one stale Copilot digest assertion after attestation regeneration. The literal now matches the candidate attestation, and all 49 installation cases pass. That CI lane otherwise passed 1,818 cases. - An earlier CI run hit an unchanged UI toast timing test. The separate fix is tracked in #16952. Current CI passes that shard. CI also caught a stale model-discovery assertion in this change; the assertion is fixed. - The local full-suite run was stopped when master changed. The final CI run supplies exact-head full-suite validation. No live Cloud or provider test was run. ## Risks - Native hello tests require a saved Core account or the installed account. Local environment overrides are unsupported for installed-account probes and fail before the provider runs. - A native task provider must declare launch preparation and authentication-check version 1. It must keep the checked configuration fixed through submission. Core rejects providers that cannot make this guarantee. - A lost task reply does not prove process termination. Core retains grants until the provider proves termination and Core saves required state. - This PR does not enable native heartbeat dispatch through plugin environments. Cloud deployment and live provider validation remain separate. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6. The exact model ID and context window are not exposed in this session. Tool use includes code editing, local tests, and the GitHub CLI. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal issue details - [x] I have run focused tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Connect and configure GitHub Copilot through Apps (#15705)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Apps and AI Connections store credentials and govern access to agent runtimes. > - Users need a supported saved-token connection and config values that survive save and reopen. > - The release must preserve saved-token access and task lifecycle guarantees. > - This pull request will connect Copilot through the normal Apps and AI Connections path. > - The benefit is a reviewable part of the Copilot production release. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15701 and #15703. Supersedes setup work in #15562. Base: #15703. Next: #15706. ## What Changed - Require configuration update authority before Copilot credential-bearing model discovery; default to the saved environment and preserve explicit selection for editors. - Keep Copilot discovery passive during reconnect reconciliation; refresh on explicit opening, account/environment changes and reconnect. - Add GitHub AI token connections with encrypted storage, ownership, grants and audit logging. - Keep repository access separate from Copilot runtime authentication. - Probe the selected environment without sending a model prompt and preserve authenticated model selection through save/reopen. - Keep fresh execution admission consistent with normal Copilot setup; persist task model choices without changing provider or permission policy. - Refresh authenticated models after reconnecting the same saved Copilot account, including recovery from a previous authentication error. - Apply the additive provider-default constraint migration through the normal generated migration workflow. ## Verification Runtime #15701 is merged at `d855e550ad8d2a267312983f26457aabf5393c3a`. History #15703 is merged at `df80616d98119cbf5abd40549794d9980a5fabf6`. Remaining source [`42bcbd61299655f7e37aabe6bb5f19bba770ad1d`](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/commit/42bcbd61299655f7e37aabe6bb5f19bba770ad1d) contains the four-file authorization repair. The remaining PR trees preserve six nonoverlapping files from the newer public mainline managed-settings fix and the CI-owned lockfile. No unrelated provider is enabled. The security finding is repaired: existing-agent discovery requires `agent_config:update` before connection selection or token resolution. The saved environment is the default. Authorized editors can select a prospective environment. Both denied board-viewer and agent-reader regressions fail on the original source. All49 route tests and server typecheck pass with the fix. Denied requests perform no connection selection, credential resolution or probe. Current-head security scans pass on both remaining PRs; the repaired thread is resolved. Copilot CLI1.0.88 and profile47 retain digest `sha256:55044aa235e88b3fe36ec8a556ee1e3382590870aab907e4462ef7d64af49cea`. The [qualification record](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/blob/42bcbd61299655f7e37aabe6bb5f19bba770ad1d/doc/plans/2026-10-20-copilot-qualification-v47.json) reports20/20 Product cells,154 assertions and7/7 protocol cases,46 assertions against frozen normal installed source `c2616370800f5f6df45246b0890ba35a7cd2faab`. The exact qualification model is `gpt-5.6-luna`. Every passing Product case confirms cleanup. Original failures remain recorded; automatic behavior retries are disabled. The route-only authorization repair changes no bound runtime/profile bytes and does not relabel the frozen campaign. The ordinary installed remote journey passed saved-token selection, model discovery, normal UI save/reopen, metadata-only Test, completed task, accepted receipt and exact19-byte browser download. An open model catalog caused no additional discovery requests during117seconds. Actual installed runtime smokes passed on macOS ARM64, macOS x64 under Rosetta and native Linux x64 on Daytona. Raw token browser entry was not exercised; encrypted connection creation used the normal API. The first Daytona file attempt timed out during delayed semantic dispatch; its precise stalled layer remains unresolved. Independent ordinary remote delivery and the other19 Product cells passed before one instrumented recheck passed8/8 with unchanged source, prompt, assertions and deadlines. No causal latency repair is claimed. Before the authorization repair, all four final PR heads passed required verify/E2E and fresh Greptile5/5 reviews with zero unresolved threads. Current-head CI/review is running for the two repaired heads. Local focused checks retain129 connection,59 runner,72 shared-eval and88 recovery/workspace passes, plus migration safety and token gates. The additive Copilot migration is361; released master history is preserved. [Cloud normal-package run39414239704](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39414239704) builds the pre-security source4f3f. All four native producers and Linux package assembly pass; the final clean installed consumers are finishing. All18 retained archives match their hashes;37,863 regular files contain zero selected credentials. That package does not contain the later route repair. The actual final published package must include it and pass the local/Daytona live canaries. The frozen Daytona image remains published and independently verified. No separate full-image scan is claimed. Docker builds run in the cloud. **Remaining:** current-head CI/review, setup and qualification merges, final publication, and ordinary local/Daytona canaries against the actual shipped package. The user explicitly authorizes the maintainer review override; CI remains a merge gate. No production deployment is claimed. Provider USD remains unknown and GitHub-attributed. ## Risks Bad credentials, missing entitlement, runtime installation and unavailable models must remain distinct failures. A connection must not adopt ambient credentials. The constraint migration changes accepted provider values, with no credential-storage migration. Current-master NewAgent fixture extraction is retained. Copilot cases use that shared support and test both passive discovery and explicit reconnect under the same setup lifecycle. The onboarding retry regression shares the component suite’s saved-connection, authenticated-model, draft, agent-list, hire and render lifecycle fixtures. Keeping it beside the existing onboarding failures makes adoption versus duplicate hire observable under the same lifecycle; this is the concrete cohesion reason for the existing large test file. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, based on GPT-6. Own agent hiring and termination in a lifecycle module (#15631)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages AI agents and their work. > - Agent creation, approval, pause, and termination change whether an agent can work. > - These changes currently use separate service and database paths. > - Some agents need setup after their record exists and before their harness can run. > - This PR adds one module that owns those state changes and their transactions. > - The module records progress and retries incomplete work after a server restart. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Problem or motivation** A hire can become active before its execution environment is ready. Direct agent state writes also bypass one common lifecycle boundary. Termination does not have a durable step for resource cleanup. **Proposed solution** Use agent lifecycle commands for hiring, approval, pause, resume, and termination. Keep proposed hires pending until approval. Prepare each approved hire, test its saved harness configuration, and then permit work. Wait for required plugin work before completing a step. **Alternatives considered** A general database commit hook would expose transaction details to callers. A timer alone would delay each new hire. This module owns each command transaction and starts its worker after commit. A periodic scan recovers work after a process stops. **Roadmap alignment** This change adds the lifecycle boundary for the existing agent and plugin systems. It does not add a user interface or a provider implementation. It replaces the lifecycle delivery approach in #15391. Related proposals include #11475 and #13099; this change does not add their external executor protocols. ## What Changed - Add durable approval, preparation, verification, pause, resume, stop, and cleanup states. - Keep agent creation, lifecycle state, configuration writes, and agent record deletion behind `modules/agent-lifecycle`. Keep validation, credential rules, reads, onboarding, invitations, general approvals, and company data deletion in their services. - Commit a hire before the remaining onboarding or invitation work. Serialize requests with the existing dedicated database connection helper. Reuse the hire after a failed attempt. - Keep accepted work in the run queue during setup. Require execution and cleanup evidence before completing pause or termination. - Retain the original credential owner when approving migrated hires. - Start lifecycle work after each command commits. Use database leases and revision checks for retries and late results. - Add a generic required plugin method and capability. Store the required plugin IDs for each agent. Track host and plugin completion separately. - Keep harness verification and credential rules in services. Supply their results to lifecycle through explicit ports. Reject failed logins and incomplete probes. - Remove reverse imports from lifecycle adapters into services. Share record queries and validation below both layers. - Use one hire decision path for agent IDs and approval IDs. Resolve the approval and agent change in one transaction. Expose policy reconciliation on the command object. - Save configuration and verification invalidation through one module operation. Ordinary commands own their transaction. Restrict the shared transaction integration to its listed callers. Reject identity, company, accounting, timestamp, and unknown fields. - Require completed termination before deleting agent records. The company deletion service calls the module through a separate deletion interface. - Save an approved secret before applying its agent binding. A failed binding leaves the secret approved. A retry reuses it. - Remove old permission and metadata export files. Move hire configuration rules out of lifecycle persistence. - Report failed worker steps and scans with operation context and known error codes. Omit provider messages, stacks, and configuration values. Document ordinary application use and extension rules. - Recover expired native owners only after execution stops. Retry cleanup of failed retained leases. Wait for setup in the live smoke script. - Keep manual, budget, and company pause reasons separate. Guard execution status writes with the ready state. - Add a migration, boundary checks, regression tests, and a lifecycle guide. Keep the current UI. - Limit periodic policy checks to 100 eligible agents per minute. Continue from the last agent ID. Exclude pending hires and agents in termination or a final state. Keep explicit company and budget updates immediate. ## Verification - Latest head `ccc3c86b0` aligns the shared status update schema with the PATCH route. All 15 shared tests, 104 server route/OpenAPI tests, 2 CLI tests, and shared/server/CLI TypeScript checks pass. The Greptile comment is fixed. CI is running; no new Apex review was requested for this small fix. - Rebase `75708ac94` rebases onto master at `2eb5187e4`. The backup test uses the shared 90-second timeout from master; the older timeout commit was removed. The affected backup test passes. - Agent budget edits now pass the target agent ID through enforcement. All 50 affected tests, server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass. Both configuration update paths have regression coverage. CI is running on the latest head. No new Apex review was requested for these small fixes. - Rebase `9b568666a` preserves the run-control extraction and delivery-work startup changes from master. All 559 affected tests, server TypeScript, and 11 boundary tests pass. CI and Apex review are running on the final head. - The policy scan fix passes 56 lifecycle and diagnostic tests, 24 policy and caller tests, and 11 boundary tests. A regression test checks the page limit, interval, excluded states, and cursor wraparound. - Rebase `fd4698750` passes all 611 tests in eight affected lifecycle, route, and heartbeat suites. Server TypeScript and all 11 module boundary tests pass. The company deletion rollback and concurrent hire tests are included. - Follow-up `00aac7646` fixes the failed decision deletion test and the public update schema. All 126 affected server tests, 8 shared tests, 2 CLI tests, and 11 boundary tests pass. Shared, server, CLI, and UI TypeScript checks pass. - Server TypeScript passes: `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit`. - All 11 boundary tests pass: `node --test scripts/check-module-boundaries.test.mjs`. The repository boundary scan also passes. - All 68 lifecycle, failure diagnostic, and harness verification tests pass. Tests reject forbidden fields through the root command, combined transition command, and restricted transaction integration. They also check invalid fields returned by configuration preparation. - Failure tests cover host work, plugin work, claims, renewals, deferrals, and scans. Log tests check known error codes and exclusion of private error contents. - All 355 tests in 10 existing caller suites pass. These tests cover secret approval, pairing, pending hires, credentials, company import, built-in agents, managed agents, instructions, and skills. - The branch is rebased onto `origin/master` at `2eb5187e4`. The queue guards and cancellation lock fix use the extracted heartbeat queue. Agent cancellation uses the extracted run-control file. The source diff scan found no secrets or private URLs. - Earlier checks cover approval retries, rollback, late verification results, policy holds, deletion rollback, concurrent company deletion, and queue admission during setup. - Before the rebase, CI passed on `00aac7646` and Greptile Apex rated it 5/5 with no open comments. CI and a new Apex review are pending for the rebased commit. The branch has no merge conflicts. - The full local build and native Dot suite were not run. The host has no Cargo. No live provider test was run. ## Risks - Background policy recovery takes more than one minute when more than 100 agents are eligible. Explicit company and budget updates still reconcile immediately. - The restricted configuration integration keeps an agent reference and its dependent records in one transaction. It cannot change a budget or invoke a lifecycle transition. A periodic scan starts pending setup after that transaction commits. - Secret approval and binding use separate transactions. A failed binding can leave an approved secret with no agent binding. - New approved hires remain unavailable until setup and verification complete. Existing clients see `paused` during these steps. This PR does not change the UI. - Migration `0320_daily_onslaught.sql` maps existing statuses and pause reasons. It does not create external resources or claim that an existing harness passed verification. - Use a coordinated server update for this migration. Older server versions can write legacy status without the new lifecycle checks. - A failed onboarding or invitation request can leave a committed hire. A retry reuses that hire and completes the remaining records. - Deletion requires completed termination. Company deletion can require another request while cleanup is pending. - Required plugins must make repeated calls safe and reject older revisions. A disabled or removed required plugin blocks completion until it is restored. - A new hire can run a second harness test after the existing UI test. Some adapters can charge for this test. - No live provider test was run. Provider implementation and resource backfill remain separate work. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex, with reasoning, code tools, and local test execution. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue in this PR with the feature request field labels - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation - [x] I have considered and documented risks - [x] Targeted local tests pass - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green on the new commit - [x] Greptile Apex is 5/5 with no open comments on the new commit - [x] I will address review comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |
