feat(claude): default qualified macOS and Linux targets to Paperclip Runner (#15997)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip must run the selected agent on its selected host. > - Claude needs verified packages for each supported target. > - A Mac controller must select the correct Linux provider pack. > - New defaults must follow package and execution evidence. > - This PR adds Claude platform packaging and target-specific pack selection. > - Existing Codex Linux ARM64 behavior remains intact. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15683. This PR depends on #15993 and #15994. Related scope: #15422 and #15224. ## What Changed - Reuse the merged four-target daemon producer/consumer matrix. Add target-owned Linux provider packs and carry their immutable identities through release assembly and vendoring. - Reuse master’s landed pinned Claude SDK ARM64 executable admission and retain package-integrity, architecture and no-follow admission. - Select target-specific remote packs so Mac controllers can use Linux hosts without a development pack override. - Preserve read-only runtime context on SSH startup and resume without accepting unverified old content. - Check ordinary installed Claude readiness without injected package authority. Retain Codex and Linux x64 consumer checks. - Extend Claude automatic target selection for the remaining qualified package targets. Retain unsupported-platform and external-override behavior. - Qualify managed Daytona snapshot names through provider IDs during Claude Connect. Pin native acquisition to the measured ID. Preserve a revocation marker after failed probes or target edits, and block native acquisition until requalification instead of falling back to a mutable name. Preserve immutable-image proof, company and account boundaries, and Legacy acquisition. ## Verification - Reconciled with master `9179d8dcc3e908c217fde4f63c9d08ccf8132eeb` through the prerequisite stack, retaining the merged startup fix and latest Codex Linux ARM64 behavior. - [Four-target exact-source package qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39267321383) passed on source `04e0202ca81387b17cbe7fd094a8338648356fe9`: all four native builds, public-package assembly, Linux x64 verification and clean installed consumers on Apple Silicon, Intel Mac and Linux ARM64. The later master reconciliation adds shared OpenRouter attribution and changes runtime source. This historical result keeps its original source identity; [later qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/39281100929) passed at `dca62c7aeb4b45f0dd91a8e18d386a16a2658ef8`. It predates the subsequent TypeScript startup fix. - Fresh local product acceptance on integrated source `b2c9fe43f9cd3bc5dd9d22552da0148845ba71a4` completed a useful file and follow-up through native Claude/Opus 5.5, High effort and the API-key connection. Both actual browser downloads were independently checked; the revision preserves the original body and session continuity. Total task estimates: $0.518432800. Ordinary web and API creation saved defaults with the native experiment disabled. - Local focused verification passed 993 startup/session tests, 243 UI tests, 12 workflow security tests, direct server/UI TypeScript checks, and token/palette gates before the last review changes. Initial DB-backed snapshot pin/revocation coverage passed 18 cases; the final serial route suites pass 122 credential/permission and 232 snapshot/environment cases after correcting a test hook timeout. Current-head cloud suites pass. - Preserved the failed pre-provider local fixture and its full pending reservation. The successful fixture has no unpriced or pending usage. Historical failed Cloud journeys, accounting holds, source identities and subscription limitations remain in the dated plan. - All Docker/Rust release production was performed in cloud CI. No local Docker image was built. An inadvertently invoked local Rust prerequisite was stopped. - Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs. - The final master merge preserves task-loading, permission, skill-retention and OpenRouter changes. Pi uses a fresh combined profile 27, preserving both historical profile-24 declarations; Copilot remains profile 22. Focused protocol checks passed 155 cases (one skipped), the updated Pi attestation check passed 18 (one skipped), and 91 evaluation/catalog checks passed. - Latest-application manual continuation passed in 37.942 seconds on `695e5c005a85bddc8711d3fcddcaf6b7e1fb64d0`, with High effort, native Opus 5.5, Anthropic API attribution, the same resumed Claude session, an independently checked 635-byte file and persisted Done status. It uses the earlier verified Mac daemon; the preceding-source package qualification passed at `dca62c7aeb4b45f0dd91a8e18d386a16a2658ef8`. That package run predates the small TypeScript startup fix and is not relabeled as qualification for it. - Upgrade limitation: changed compiled sidecar identity rejected old durable launch state and recovery hit session-open bounds before eventually resuming. That attempt was operator-cancelled and retained; the successful manual continuation does not qualify seamless upgrades. - Local latency profile, Opus 5.5/High unchanged: three alternating real-ACP loopback samples per variant reduce median provider-ready time from 5.081s to 4.034s. The matched real API task startup improves from 5.533s to 4.348s, but total reply time changes from 17.933s to 20.221s because agent work varies. This establishes a startup saving of about one second, not a consistent total-reply speedup. A real candidate follow-up passed in 20.146s and resumed the same saved session. The loopback fixture makes no external model requests; failed initial probes remain retained. - The startup change passes 107 focused runtime/effort/lease tests, 53 profile checks (one skipped), TypeScript checking and the TypeScript-only runtime build. Native hire fixture checks pass 70 tests; their first local run retained a socket-hangup failure and stale OpenCode expectation, both accounted for before the passing rerun. Broader required checks run in cloud CI. ## Risks - **Experience needs improvement:** successful connection setup still shows “Connection needs attention” because runtime checks are deferred. Cold provider-pack upload took 122–126 seconds per run while the task mainly showed “Thinking.” The tested Core-only preview excludes private Cloud UI plugins; this is not full Cloud distribution or subscription qualification. Desktop dark theme was tested; mobile and comprehensive accessibility were not. The portable report validates, but gallery interaction could not be inspected because host preview was queued. - The optional supply-chain scan returned neutral/inconclusive because GitHub Actions package coverage and infrastructure parsing are unavailable. It is not counted as a successful supply-chain qualification. Exact package, daemon and image integrity checks passed. - A stale, missing or wrong-architecture pack must fail admission. It must not change runner or target silently. - Provider-pack source changes invalidate affected earlier execution results. Existing unknown-cost and cleanup holds remain intact. - Live subscription execution remains unverified under the API-key qualification direction. Built-in authentication flows are retained. ARM64 cloud-image production is deferred. Merge and production deployment remain separate. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, repository tools, code execution and browser testing. The exact serving model ID and context-window size are not exposed in this session. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] Focused local tests and final cloud verification pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: default new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner (#15993)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip lets users choose an agent harness and account. > - The server resolves the runner for new agents. > - Claude still needs the same ordinary native-default journey as Codex. > - Existing agents must retain their runner, model and account. > - This PR defaults new Apple Silicon Claude agents to Paperclip Runner with Opus 5.5. > - Users can connect and work without a runner override. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #15683. This PR depends on #15994 and precedes #15997. Related scope: #15422, #13978 and #15224. ## What Changed - Resolve new Apple Silicon Claude agents to `paperclip_runner`, `provider: acpx`, `acpxAgent: claude`. Keep explicit Legacy, models, provider routing and saved execution. - Use `claude-opus-5-5` for ordinary Claude defaults and retain explicit overrides. - Reuse existing API-key/subscription connections, credential storage and checks. Generalize the shared Advanced runner control with Claude branding. - Carry configured effort into the shared v9 contract. Preserve compatible permissions, instructions, skills, timeouts and session behavior. Require Legacy for unsupported settings. - Qualify a new immutable managed Claude target at explicit Connect through the existing permission-gated probe. Use fresh scoped discovery for test and hire. Discard stale results and require an explicit Connect after settings change. - Retain merged Codex onboarding recovery, auth preparation, import/effort corrections and Grok Bot gates. - Check the Claude first-task wizard's saved default directly. Update configuration/runtime documentation and exact Opus 5.5 accounting. - Align hire fixtures with the merged host-environment restriction. Native agent-authenticated hires cannot inject host env settings; both creation endpoints verify that no extra agent is saved. ## Verification - Updated onto master `9179d8dcc3e908c217fde4f63c9d08ccf8132eeb` through #15994. Native input v9 carries effort while preserving v7 home modes and v8 Muse. Codex defaults remain unchanged. - Focused local verification passed 285 server tests, 323 UI tests, 124 setup/registry tests, and two v9 permission-pin transport cases. Direct server/UI TypeScript checks passed. An initial 30-second hook timeout was resolved by serial verification with a longer hook budget: all 122 credential/permission cases and 232 snapshot/environment cases pass. Direct server TypeScript checking also passes. - Ordinary web creation with the experiment disabled saved native Claude, Opus 5.5 and High effort without runner/model overrides. The actual product task and follow-up both succeeded on integrated source `b2c9fe43f9cd3bc5dd9d22552da0148845ba71a4` with the cloud-built daemon from `04e0202ca81387b17cbe7fd094a8338648356fe9`. The final master reconciliation also changes shared runtime source. Historical proof retains its source identity; a final-source cloud qualification is running before refreshing the preview daemon. - Both actual browser downloads were checked: v1 has three sections/six checkboxes (451 bytes); v2 preserves the original body and adds two Rollback checks (612 bytes). The original attachment stayed byte-identical. The follow-up records session resume and the same provider session. Total estimated API usage: $0.518432800, with no pending/unpriced usage in the successful fixture. - Fixed the live-discovered setup incompatibility: native API-key validation no longer depends on the global Legacy Claude CLI. The existing provider endpoint verifies the key without a paid prompt; subscription/custom routing probes remain intact. - Fixed security review's native-hire credential redirection: agent-supplied URLs, proxy/launch settings and other host environment controls are rejected before inheritance. Native credential references remain supported and partial edits use the saved harness. Added create/hire/update regression coverage. - Current-head cloud CI is green. All three stack PRs have fresh Greptile 5/5 reviews and zero unresolved review threads. Required typecheck, test and build gates ran in cloud CI; Docker work stayed remote. Earlier failed checks remain in their original runs. - Docker and native release builds ran in cloud infrastructure. An inadvertent local Rust prerequisite was stopped; no local Docker build was run. ## Risks - Missing packages, authentication rejection, unsupported settings and unavailable models must fail explicitly. Existing agents retain saved execution; explicit runner changes use existing revision/session invalidation. - Subscription follow-up remains unverified; remaining live acceptance uses API keys per human steering. Historical accounting holds and the separate $50 ceiling remain intact. - The subscription acceptance limit remains explicit for review. No Claude database migration is introduced. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [ ] Focused local tests and final cloud verification pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: default new Codex agents to Paperclip Runner on Linux and macOS (#15683)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source control plane for agent companies. > - People choose a harness when creating an agent. > - The server should resolve that harness to a qualified runner. > - Codex is the first harness in the staged default rollout. > - Saved agents must retain their execution choices. > - New Codex agents therefore use Paperclip Runner on qualified macOS/Linux targets, with an explicit Legacy override. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #16028, #15555, #15673, #15422, #15631, #15926, #15932, #16149. The runtime/install prerequisite and release repair are merged. This slice owns Codex creation, setup, configuration and preservation. Other harness defaults remain unchanged. It adds no database migration; incoming master migrations, required maps and regression coverage are retained. ## What Changed - Resolve `runner: auto | paperclip | legacy` at the common creation boundary across onboarding, API/CLI, hires, built-ins, plugins and imports. Freeze pending hires and export resolved execution choices. - Preserve existing runners on upgrades, unrelated edits and import updates, including compatible accounts, workspace settings, Codex effort and intentional clears. - Use the underlying harness picker and branding; put the runner override in Advanced. Use the shared dropdown and update production-component stories and creation contracts. - Support qualified Apple Silicon, Intel Mac, Linux x64 and Linux ARM64. Linux requires GNU libc 2.39+. Disabled, external, unsupported and unqualified combinations retain their applicable Legacy execution. - Test the selected runtime/account/model/environment. Ordinary Connect probes eligible immutable managed targets and refreshes scoped discovery. Creation/discovery do not provision. Auth, dependency, incompatible-setting and cleanup failures remain actionable without changing runners. - Keep setup probes read-only, preserve local/SSH isolation and resolve packaged assets before staging credentials. Bound cleanup reads by the remaining absolute deadline; physically close every owned ingress socket before endpoint release. Unconfirmed cleanup retains recovery state. - Preserve validated completed-onboarding callbacks through startup recovery. First file-producing work belongs to the child task and uses the existing dependency/block handoff and task-scoped registration. - Reuse existing E2E fixtures, artifact checks, reporting and controls. Keep Docker/Cargo/native compilation remote. Paperclip tarballs contain no Codex payloads; official optional npm platform dependencies remain. ## Verification Current tested head: `1c03a8815672d82c264a9b08d4ea1984e8fae107`. **Merge-ready: required CI, fresh review, package qualification, Mac core acceptance and Test task/follow-up acceptance pass.** The existing attachment and native-continuity oracles independently verify both Test downloads, run attribution and unchanged native/provider/workspace identities. The maintainer authorized a code-owner-review exception for this PR only. The first Test setup failure and normal Board completion-review friction are retained below. Actual post-merge packages and private Cloud distribution remain separate qualification gates. - [Current CI](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38564241625): all 48 ordinary jobs and required verify/E2E pass. Attempt 1 retained six simultaneous host-shutdown cancellations. One failed-only retry passes those six lanes and two aggregates, preserving 40 successes. Actual integration checkout `53104c1` combines this head with master `c80`; it is not relabeled as the branch tree. Fresh exact-head Greptile 5/5, 30 resolved threads, no actionable findings. - [Exact-source package qualification](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38565287239): nine applicable jobs pass, nine conditional jobs skip. Four remote native producers; Linux x64 clean install; Intel Mac, Apple Silicon and Linux ARM64 native startup/physical cleanup controls. All 18 tarballs/four daemon source/hash/manifest bindings and 343 migrations through 0344 verify. No Codex payload is packed. These hosted tarballs are not a published npm canary. - Normal Apple Silicon installation and credential-free native startup/cleanup pass using the packaged daemon, with no source build or provider turn. Fresh installed DB initialization passes. Upgrade 651a→1c03 preserves all three complete execution configs, accounts, ten recorded run profiles, paused budgets, active incidents, cost summaries and two historical unpriced events. Historical recovery state is retained. - Cleanup regressions: four delayed-read baseline failures become 15 passing deadline/authority controls. No-acknowledgement and prior-error socket ownership regressions become 12 passing controls. Direct runtime/server types, maps: 35 areas / 176 IDs, diff checks and independent reviews pass. Permission/auth/reconnect policy and the 10-second setup budget remain intact. - Existing source coverage includes creation/selection/imports, pending approvals, recovery, account/lifecycle handling, mounted forms, dropdowns and E2E support. Full typechecks/tests/build/token and applicable Storybook checks pass in the recorded current CI; no duplicate suite or weakened grader. - Literal 9546 live Mac proof: ordinary Auto Codex onboarding, useful document, real completed-child callback/reply, seven successful native runs, manual follow-up and independently downloaded1,101-byte child file. Existing Legacy title edit/reload preserves execution; two real Legacy runs produce independently checked15/34-byte files. These remain historical source records. - Current literal 1c03 Mac core acceptance passes independent checks: ordinary Auto native Codex onboarding without runner override; only timeout 180 seconds/concurrency 1 saved; six successful native runs and six serialized turns (maximum overlap 1); both same-task continuity checks and five mechanical callback checks; actual rendered parent reply and exact child downloads. The useful handoff advances from revision 1 to 2. Both files are 48 bytes, SHA-256 `8b742bd4e8123a7c078f0a8d9f3449fbfa8a320d7d90be641a2818db3c53d92c` and `f42db9774fa06e804ab7d596fc8b922a2b638921c418b87d0111151d290a6afe`; exactly one byte changes and old history remains. The agent is paused with zero active runs/errors. Both artifact work products have `isPrimary=false`, and descriptive titles fail a stricter title-helper assumption; these retained results are scoped editorial follow-up, not new merge gates. Six source-bound screenshots are uploaded and verified in the private primary QA report. - [Literal 9546 managed proof](https://d1p6rlowie26tp.cloudfront.net/runner-e2e/campaigns/gha-38485488621-1/index.html): original 19 assertions and completed judge pass, four native turns, child-bound240-byte file and session/workspace continuity. Checkout reports a verified generated target-lock mutation; full final porcelain was not retained. Signed execution-image identity remains separate from Core source. - Actual 651a Test deployment succeeds on one owned/pinned target. One ordinary Auto API-key Connect then fails native cleanup before hire. Controller turn/drain/suspend completion and service-recorded environment cleanup are observed; they do not certify physical deletion or native authority retirement. Failure/recovery/unknown holds are retained. No Legacy switch or unchanged paid retry. The two source repairs above require actual treatment. - [Current immutable Core preview](https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/38570365725) and matching DB/shared artifacts pass. One owned, pinned Test target serves exact `1c03`; identical migration history correctly skips the migrator. Ordinary Auto Codex Connect succeeds and hires native; saved native selection and QA bounds survive reload. The initial child preparation attempt fails before provider work, with actual stdout identifying `renewal_deadline`; its trigger remains unknown and the failure is retained. Normal Board **Try again** and **Resume** recover the child to Done, producing a browser-verified 44-byte file, SHA-256 `0a8458b1efcc2d7a0d815689458c4caab039a46c7c7a3e5805de6bc8b1a96ecc`. The actual parent callback reports the completed child document/file. The existing validator requires a parent-owned attachment, so recovery enters normal Review; after byte checking, normal **Approve completion** reaches parent Done. No forced status or duplicate parent file is used. The validator is unchanged from integrated and current master. Autonomous initial callback-to-Done is not proven. The same-child follow-up completes document revision 2 and publishes a second independently downloaded 44-byte file, SHA-256 `22022257300fae762784632d08d3bbe0bab61e2ce81f91864a14dcd7aa464591`; only the revision digit changes. The unchanged existing native-continuity and attachment oracles pass. All ten recorded runs are terminal: nine native successes and the retained pre-provider setup failure. The QA agent is paused with zero active runs. The pre-existing parent evidence scope mismatch is a separate follow-up, with ordinary completion review exercised rather than a forced status or relaxed validation. This unsigned Core preview remains distinct from post-merge private Cloud composition. ## Risks - Saved agents are not migrated. Explicit runner changes use normal configuration/session rules; historical runs retain their recorded execution. - Native readiness depends on verified assets and server-owned target qualification. A Legacy probe, HTTP200 or successful account save cannot prove native readiness. - Recovery exceptions remain restricted to validated completed-onboarding reports; process-loss, ownership and terminal-state safeguards remain active. Unexecuted live journeys stay open. - Linux ARM paid tasks, Windows, Alpine and 32-bit ARM remain deferred. Cold Cargo cache misses are recorded; no warm-cache speedup is claimed. - Historical invoices/physical cleanup remain unconfirmed and held. After merge, exact published npm canary, signed standard image/migrator, private composition and serving/live acceptance still require qualification. Production deployment/default promotion is not authorized. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-6 family, with reasoning, tools, code execution and parallel agents. Exact serving snapshot and context-window size are not exposed. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used with available version and capability details - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have linked public issues or PRs above - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket id - [x] I have run the stated focused tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation - [x] I have considered and documented risks - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green on the current candidate - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open findings on the current candidate - [x] I will address all reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(agents): reduce hiring templates to role descriptions (#14985)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - New agents receive role instructions from onboarding, the hiring skill, or a team package. > - These sources repeat harness procedures and impose generic work policies. > - They can crowd out the task and the harness instructions. > - This pull request reduces those sources to short role descriptions. > - It preserves configuration, skills, authentication, reporting lines, and approval controls. > - The benefit is less repeated instruction text with explicit coverage for the default hiring path. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #3307. The CEO template can impose a fixed delegation route instead of letting the agent choose how to fulfill the request. This change removes that route. It does not implement autonomous goal selection. Related work: #14920 preserves stock Codex base instructions. #14948 reduces the generic manual and shared runtime prompts. #14961 improves native completion-tool descriptions. This PR is separate from those changes. ## What Changed - Select only the short CEO `AGENTS.md` for new default CEO bundles. Keep the three former companion files as compatibility assets. - Reduce the first-agent chief-of-staff prompt and coder, QA, UX, and security role examples. - Reduce seven bundled team role bodies. Preserve their role, reporting, and skill metadata. Regenerate the catalog. - Make hiring examples optional. Replace the long generic role manual with short role drafting guidance. Preserve explicit requester instructions. - Add configuration and import coverage for native and legacy managed bundles, custom instructions, first-agent rendering, and catalog contents. - Add an explicit-only hiring eval that starts from the production CEO default and checks one coder hire, independently computed JSON output, saved instructions, and worker reuse. - Include the full prompt comparison and a separate three-request drafting simulation. Neither is a live provider comparison. Prompt differences: [before and after](doc/plans/2026-10-02-hiring-template-prompt-diff.md). The CEO default falls from 1,897 to 20 words. The coder example falls from 652 to 18 words. Word counts describe instruction size, not outcome quality or billing. ## Verification - PASS: 99 focused server tests and eight shipped-catalog tests. - PASS: catalog generation and validation for four shipped teams. - PASS: hiring skill validation. - PASS: `pnpm -r typecheck`. - PASS: `pnpm build`. - INCOMPLETE: the full local `pnpm test:run` was stopped before rebase. Its original log is retained. This is not a completed full-suite pass. The full current-head GitHub CI workflow passed: https://github.com/paperclipai/paperclip/actions/runs/37073372419. - PASS: `pnpm test:e2e:runner:typecheck` and `pnpm test:e2e:runner:unit` (63 files / 843 tests). - PASS: discovery for the two new hiring cells, 50 existing everyday cells, and the full 438-cell catalog. - PASS after rebase: 99 server tests, 11 catalog tests, 62 selected E2E support tests, and the E2E typecheck. - PASS: all current-head PR checks at `57dcee147ed0b2d2e3cc657cd9e50fb16bf9ec25`: 51 successful check runs, two intentional Storybook skips, and successful Snyk status. Fresh Greptile is 5/5 with zero unresolved threads. - PENDING follow-up: matched live hiring runs on frozen integration refs. No live outcome-quality or non-regression result is claimed from the configuration checks or this merge. The new suite has two local native cells: Codex and ACPX Claude. It expects five provider turns per cell. It compares source-derived bundles, so the historical long templates remain admissible. Missing successful source-read receipts make a pair uncomparable. They do not establish a behavior regression or equivalence. ## Risks - New default roles have fewer prescribed procedures. Live checks must determine whether a removed instruction was needed for an outcome. - Existing custom and saved bundles keep their contents. The retained companion assets avoid a source-file compatibility break. - Specialized Summarizer, Reflection Coach, and Wiki Maintainer prompts remain unchanged. Their product contracts need separate review. - The generic non-CEO fallback reduction is in #14948. This PR alone does not provide its eight-word fallback. - Configuration tests and drafting simulations do not establish live outcome quality. QA, UX, security, and chief-of-staff hiring behavior remain outside the new two-cell comparison. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. test: add persistent E2E coverage for human blocker decisions (#14707)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip manages work for AI agents. > - Agents use the coordination skill when work needs human authority or a scope decision. > - PR #14188 replaced automatic manager escalation with direct blocker handling. > - This behavior needs real browser, server, database, and provider tests. > - The test must verify saved human input, task ownership, and resumed work. > - This pull request adds six reusable Product E2E cases and improves the skill examples that they exercise. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #14188. The merged change needs repeatable behavior coverage. The new suite tests missing administrator access, missing hiring permission, and requester scope questions. Searches found no duplicate blocker-guidance suite. This extends the existing eval system described in ROADMAP.md. ## What Changed - Add the explicit-only `blocker-guidance` Product E2E suite. It has three local scenarios on legacy Codex and legacy Claude. - Use the production UI and public APIs to create work, save a human-only question or confirmation, answer it after reload, and resume the same task. - Check requester identity, ownership history, manager activity, hiring, saved answers, and completion. Keep direct text input as a separate UX result. - Save pending and final screenshots, API checkpoints, skill hashes, provider evidence, and billing data through the existing report pipeline. - Isolate the Claude fixture home. Verify the served skill bytes before dispatch so an old installed skill cannot silently replace the evaluated skill. - Improve the coordination and hiring skill examples. Include the human-only policy, requester address, wake behavior, and handling of authorized scope changes. - Grader v5 requires the exact approved public welcome note as a new worker comment. Browser input checks reject unwritable scope cards before clicking, and confirmation direction must be saved in the resolution before the worker wakes. - Add grader calibration and browser-input tests. Update the fixture guide and generated capability inventories. ## Verification - `pnpm build`: passed after rebasing onto current master. - `pnpm -r typecheck`: passed. - `pnpm test:e2e:runner:typecheck`: passed. - `pnpm test:e2e:runner:unit`: 742 tests passed. - `pnpm test:e2e:runner:browser-support blocker-input.spec.ts`: 10 tests passed. - `pnpm test:e2e:runner -- --list --suite blocker-guidance`: six cells found. - Capability inventory and generated-contract checks: passed. - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/hiring-operational-examples.test.ts`: four tests passed after synchronizing the generated API reference and section anchor. - Full general and serialized test suites: passed in CI on `6652cee74517039676bad6a720f213625d265acd`. The redundant local `pnpm test:run` was interrupted after complete CI coverage passed; it is not claimed as a completed local full-suite run. - Final GitHub checks: 54 passed, two optional Storybook checks skipped. The runtime-exposure startup test hit a 10-second readiness timeout once, passed a targeted local reproduction, and its CI shard passed the single retry without code changes. - Current-head Greptile: 5/5, clean check, zero unresolved threads. - Historical live measurement on September 29 at `4edc77ae2b95b10dd61426ce3f042bac00527ad9`: three independent six-cell runs scored 5/6, 6/6, and 6/6. Claude Sonnet 4.6 passed 9/9. Codex `gpt-5.6-sol` passed 8/9. These runs predate this rebase. - Version 5 changes the scope answer to an exact approved publication draft. The historical runs do not qualify that new requirement; the two-provider scope pilot at `49a1f4eab369948b9e3b34a6ce436489e875e4ec` passed Codex and failed Claude. Claude posted the correct salary-free sentence but omitted its required reference line from that comment, placing the reference in a separate completion message. The `public-welcome-note` check correctly failed. An earlier Claude database-startup failure was retained separately; its fresh-instance retry reached the model. This pilot is not a six-cell qualification. - The failed Codex scope case omitted `addresseeUserId`. The strict routing check remains. All 18 attempts had clean evidence manifests and passed cleanup. - To repeat with provider credentials: `pnpm test:e2e:runner -- --suite blocker-guidance --max-parallel 1`. This is a paid, opt-in suite and is excluded from `--all`. ## Risks - The live suite measures variable model behavior. The retained 17/18 historical result and the current 1/2 scope pilot are not all-pass qualifications. These paid cases are opt-in; their observed model failures remain visible independently of deterministic CI checks. - A separate generic task-replacement diagnostic still exposed a Claude refusal. The ordinary cases use specific business decisions. The diagnostic is not a standalone catalog case in this change. - Earlier measurements included an old installed Claude skill and test defects. Their grades remain retained and are not combined with the three final repetitions. - Skill examples can affect when agents ask for human input. Downstream permission checks still apply. - Native runners, Daytona, agent-requester routing, and real external connection authorization are outside this suite. - Raw provider traces and credentials remain private. No screenshots, raw reports, secrets, workflow changes, or lockfile changes are committed. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 through Codex assisted with this change. The exact deployed variant and context window size are not exposed in this session. The assistant used reasoning, repository edits, tool use, and shell execution. The evaluated models were `gpt-5.6-sol` and `claude-sonnet-4-6`. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix: harden agent chat runner tools and recovery (#13678)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Agent Chat turns discussion into plans, tasks, reviews, and hires. > - These workflows need reliable tool results and task context on the native runner. > - Live Claude and Codex tests exposed lost retry requests, invalid project inputs, and a child startup crash. > - Recovery also exposed a misleading retry action and missing child task context. > - This pull request fixes those paths and adds regression coverage. > - Agents can continue the original request and operators can inspect a stopped run. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** A failed Agent Chat retry could lose the user's question. Project creation accepted unsupported icons in its tool schema. Codex could stop when a helper's MCP startup event arrived before its thread lineage. A stopped task offered Retry even when the server required execution reconciliation. Resumed agents could miss existing delegated tasks. Hiring and review instructions did not describe the native runner's available tools and source requirements. **Expected behavior** Retries retain the selected request. Tool schemas match the API. Child startup information does not gain authority over the parent or stop it. Recovery actions match the server's requirements. Task context exposes existing child work. Handoffs contain the material the assignee needs. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Enable experimental Agent Chat in an isolated development instance. 2. Configure native Codex and ACPX Claude agents on Paperclip Runner. 3. Ask for a plan, revise it, approve task creation, and request a hire and status report. 4. Retry a failed chat turn and check that it answers the original request. 5. Start a Codex helper before its thread lineage arrives. 6. Resume a delegated task and inspect its existing children and saved output. **Paperclip version or commit** The live failures were found at `f2c5e54dc`. This branch is rebased onto `86b7ee992`. **Deployment mode** Isolated local development instance with native Codex and ACPX Claude. No database migration or default permission change. Related work: Refs #13284 for Agent Chat. Refs #13438 for the server-side API receipt fix, which this branch preserves. The transport also accepts the earlier HTTP receipt format. Refs #13655 for the current Codex continuation and helper lineage handling, which this branch also preserves. ## What Changed - Preserve failed Agent Chat wake-comment IDs and session generation from the authorized source run. Reject pre-reset retries. - Wrap API receipts with the correct semantic call identity. Test current and earlier receipt formats through real HTTP and runnerd. - Classify early child MCP startup notifications as information. Keep foreign completion and result events rejected. - Constrain project icons on both tool surfaces and regenerate the protocol contracts. - Include bounded, company-scoped visible direct child tasks in task context. Filter hidden tasks before applying the limit. - Replace the rejected Retry action with Inspect run for native continuation reconciliation. - Update hiring, review handoff, status reporting, and development guidance. ## Verification - Live tests covered Claude and Codex questions, plan revisions, approval, task creation, hiring, status, chat reset, failures, and recovery. - The recovered task produced its saved checklist and example. A later follow-up read the existing child tasks and document without creating more work. - Full build, repository type checks, token gates, 142 focused tests, 188 runner TypeScript tests, and the Rust notification/descendant regressions passed after rebase. The separate local full-suite run was stopped after the complete CI suite passed. - Review fixes passed the updated route, tool-authority, and icon regression tests plus server type checking. - Required commands: `pnpm build`, `pnpm -r typecheck`, `PAPERCLIP_IN_WORKTREE=false pnpm test:run`, and `pnpm check:token-gates`. - At `4ce8047b0`, all 55 applicable GitHub checks pass (two Storybook checks are intentionally skipped), including the complete general/serialized test matrix, runner tests, browser tests, build, type checks, Docker checks, and canary dry run. - Fresh Greptile review is 5/5 on `4ce8047b0`; all three findings were fixed with regressions and there are no unresolved review threads. - Two initial CI service-startup timeouts passed unchanged in local reproductions and in the latest CI run. ## Risks - The new event classification is limited to MCP startup information. It does not authorize foreign task completion, results, or tool requests. - Task context returns at most 100 direct child tasks and reports truncation. It excludes hidden tasks and other companies. This improves delegation context but does not enforce semantic duplicate detection. - Native reconciliation still requires an operator to inspect and record prior outcomes. The new link does not replace the recovery API. - API tools remain opt-in. Claude permission choices remain explicit. No default permission, schema, or workflow changes. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-6 in Codex, with reasoning, repository editing, code execution, API tools, and browser testing. The exact deployment identifier and context-window size are not exposed in this session. Live acceptance agents used OpenAI `gpt-5.6-sol` and Anthropic `claude-sonnet-4-6`.

[codex] Refresh docs and agent skills (#4693)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents through a company-scoped control plane > - Contributors and agents need docs and skills that match the current V1 behavior > - The source branch included documentation updates alongside implementation work > - Keeping docs and skill guidance separate makes the implementation PR easier to review > - This pull request refreshes the V1 docs and agent-operating guidance without changing runtime behavior > - The benefit is current contributor guidance that can merge independently from code changes ## What Changed - Refreshed V1 product, goal, implementation, database, and development documentation. - Updated the Paperclip heartbeat skill guidance and create-agent skill references. - Added the Paperclip plan-to-task conversion skill. - Updated release changelog skill guidance. ## Verification - `git diff --check public-gh/master..HEAD` passed in the PR worktree after the Greptile fix. - Greptile Review passed on head `673317ed` with zero unresolved review threads. - GitHub PR checks passed on head `673317ed`: `policy`, `verify`, `e2e`, and `security/snyk (cryppadotta)`. ## Risks - Low runtime risk because this branch only changes docs and skill guidance. - Documentation may need follow-up wording adjustments if reviewers want a different framing for V1 behavior. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. [codex] Harden create-agent skill governance (#4422)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - Hiring agents is a governance-sensitive workflow because it grants roles, adapter config, skills, and execution capability > - The create-agent skill needs explicit templates and review guidance so hires are auditable and not over-permissioned > - Skill sync also needs to recognize bundled Paperclip skills consistently for Codex local agents > - This pull request expands create-agent role templates, adds a security-engineer template, and documents capability/secret-handling review requirements > - The benefit is safer, more repeatable agent creation with clearer approval payloads and less permission sprawl ## What Changed - Expanded `paperclip-create-agent` guidance for template selection, adjacent-template drafting, and role-specific review bars. - Added a Security Engineer agent template and collaboration/safety sections for Coder, QA, and UX Designer templates. - Hardened draft-review guidance around desired skills, external-system access, secrets, and confidential advisory handling. - Updated LLM agent-configuration guidance to point hiring workflows at the create-agent skill. - Added tests for bundled skill sync, create-agent skill injection, hire approval payloads, and LLM route guidance. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/agent-skills-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/codex-local-skill-injection.test.ts server/src/__tests__/codex-local-skill-sync.test.ts server/src/__tests__/llms-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/paperclip-skill-utils.test.ts --config server/vitest.config.ts` passed: 5 files, 23 tests. - `git diff --check public-gh/master..pap-2228-create-agent-governance -- . ':(exclude)ui/storybook-static'` passed. - Confirmed this PR does not include `pnpm-lock.yaml`. ## Risks - Low-to-medium risk: this primarily changes skills/docs and tests, but it affects future hiring guidance and approval expectations. - Reviewers should check whether the new Security Engineer template is too broad for default company installs. - No database migrations. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex coding agent based on GPT-5, with shell, git, Paperclip API, and GitHub CLI tool use in the local Paperclip workspace. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Note: screenshot checklist item is not applicable; this PR changes skills, docs, and server tests. --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

[codex] Split reusable agent hiring templates (#4124)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - Hiring new agents depends on clear, reusable operating instructions > - The create-agent skill had one large template reference that mixed multiple roles together > - That made it harder to reuse, review, and adapt role-specific instructions during governed hires > - This pull request splits the reusable agent instruction templates into focused role files and polishes the agent instructions pane layout > - The benefit is faster, clearer agent hiring without bloating the main skill document ## What Changed - Split coder, QA, and UX designer reusable instructions into dedicated reference files. - Kept the index reference concise and pointed it at the role-specific files. - Updated the create-agent skill to describe the separated template structure. - Polished the agent detail instructions/package file tree layout so the longer template references remain readable. ## Verification - `pnpm install --frozen-lockfile --ignore-scripts` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` - UI screenshot rationale: no screenshots attached because the visible change is limited to the Agent detail instructions file-tree layout (`wrapLabels` plus the side-by-side breakpoint). There is no new user flow or state transition to demonstrate; reviewers can verify visually by opening an agent's Instructions tab and resizing across the single-column and side-by-side breakpoints to confirm long file names wrap instead of truncating or overflowing. ## Risks - Low risk: this is documentation and UI layout only. - Main risk is stale links in the skill references; the new files are committed in the referenced paths. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. [codex] Improve agent runtime recovery and governance (#4086)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies. > - The heartbeat runtime, agent import path, and agent configuration defaults determine whether work is dispatched safely and predictably. > - Several accumulated fixes all touched agent execution recovery, wake routing, import behavior, and runtime concurrency defaults. > - Those changes need to land together so the heartbeat service and agent creation defaults stay internally consistent. > - This pull request groups the runtime/governance changes from the split branch into one standalone branch. > - The benefit is safer recovery for stranded runs, bounded high-volume reads, imported-agent approval correctness, skill-template support, and a clearer default concurrency policy. ## What Changed - Fixed stranded continuation recovery so successful automatic retries are requeued instead of incorrectly blocking the issue. - Bounded high-volume issue/log reads across issue, heartbeat, agent, project, and workspace paths. - Fixed imported-agent approval and instruction-path permission handling. - Quarantined seeded worktree execution state during worktree provisioning. - Queued approval follow-up wakes and hardened SQL_ASCII heartbeat output handling. - Added reusable agent instruction templates for hiring flows. - Set the default max concurrent agent runs to five and updated related UI/tests/docs. ## Verification - `pnpm install --frozen-lockfile` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/company-portability.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-comment-wake-batching.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-list.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issues-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-permissions-routes.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts ui/src/lib/new-agent-runtime-config.test.ts` - Split integration check: merged this branch first, followed by the other [PAP-1614](/PAP/issues/PAP-1614) branches, with no merge conflicts. - Confirmed this branch does not include `pnpm-lock.yaml`. ## Risks - Medium risk: touches heartbeat recovery, queueing, and issue list bounds in central runtime paths. - Imported-agent and concurrency default behavior changes may affect existing automation that assumes one-at-a-time default runs. - No database migrations are included. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. [codex] Add run liveness continuations (#4083)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies. > - Heartbeat runs are the control-plane record of each agent execution window. > - Long-running local agents can exhaust context or stop while still holding useful next-step state. > - Operators need that stop reason, next action, and continuation path to be durable and visible. > - This pull request adds run liveness metadata, continuation summaries, and UI surfaces for issue run ledgers. > - The benefit is that interrupted or long-running work can resume with clearer context instead of losing the agent's last useful handoff. ## What Changed - Added heartbeat-run liveness fields, continuation attempt tracking, and an idempotent `0058` migration. - Added server services and tests for run liveness, continuation summaries, stop metadata, and activity backfill. - Wired local and HTTP adapters to surface continuation/liveness context through shared adapter utilities. - Added shared constants, validators, and heartbeat types for liveness continuation state. - Added issue-detail UI surfaces for continuation handoffs and the run ledger, with component tests. - Updated agent runtime docs, heartbeat protocol docs, prompt guidance, onboarding assets, and skills instructions to explain continuation behavior. - Addressed Greptile feedback by scoping document evidence by run, excluding system continuation-summary documents from liveness evidence, importing shared liveness types, surfacing hidden ledger run counts, documenting bounded retry behavior, and moving run-ledger liveness backfill off the request path. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts server/src/__tests__/run-continuations.test.ts server/src/__tests__/run-liveness.test.ts server/src/__tests__/activity-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/documents-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/issue-continuation-summary.test.ts server/src/services/heartbeat-stop-metadata.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueRunLedger.test.tsx ui/src/components/IssueContinuationHandoff.test.tsx ui/src/components/IssueDocumentsSection.test.tsx` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/db build` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/activity-service.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueRunLedger.test.tsx` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/activity-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/run-continuations.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueRunLedger.test.tsx` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts -t "treats a plan document update"` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/activity-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-process-recovery.test.ts -t "activity service|treats a plan document update"` - Remote PR checks on head `e53b1a1d`: `verify`, `e2e`, `policy`, and Snyk all passed. - Confirmed `public-gh/master` is an ancestor of this branch after fetching `public-gh master`. - Confirmed `pnpm-lock.yaml` is not included in the branch diff. - Confirmed migration `0058_wealthy_starbolt.sql` is ordered after `0057` and uses `IF NOT EXISTS` guards for repeat application. - Greptile inline review threads are resolved. ## Risks - Medium risk: this touches heartbeat execution, liveness recovery, activity rendering, issue routes, shared contracts, docs, and UI. - Migration risk is mitigated by additive columns/indexes and idempotent guards. - Run-ledger liveness backfill is now asynchronous, so the first ledger response can briefly show historical missing liveness until the background backfill completes. - UI screenshot coverage is not included in this packaging pass; validation is currently through focused component tests. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Update SKILL.md with approval handling procedure, issue-approval linking, and config revision documentation. Add new paperclip-create-agent skill for CEO-driven agent hiring workflows.
