feat(runner): add remote execution substrate (#12638)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Paperclip Runner gives native runs a durable and governed execution path. > - The current native path runs on the control-plane host. > - Remote environments need an authenticated execution-target contract. > - The contract must not change direct adapters or enable new runtimes by default. > - This pull request adds the remote execution substrate and Daytona ingress. > - The benefit is a bounded base for later remote runner transport work. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs #12616. Refs #12352. **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting. This change touches runner transport, server orchestration, plugin contracts, and shared settings. **Problem or motivation** Native execution cannot resolve an authenticated runner ingress through a remote environment. The server also lacks one provider-neutral contract for remote execution targets. **Proposed solution** Add a default-off runner preview ingress capability. Add transport-neutral runner connectivity. Add remote execution target and lifecycle handling. Add a Daytona ingress implementation with redacted credentials. **Alternatives considered** A provider-specific server path would duplicate orchestration and authorization. A public endpoint without an environment contract would weaken the trust boundary. **Roadmap alignment** This work supports the Cloud and Sandbox agents milestone. It also supports self-healing runs and governed tool access. ## What Changed - Added execution-target traits for local, SSH, and sandbox environments. - Added plugin RPC contracts for runner ingress endpoints. - Added authenticated Daytona preview ingress. - Added transport-neutral PRP outbound connections. - Added remote runner artifact verification and fail-closed provider selection. - Added bounded native session resume, cancellation, and lifecycle recovery. - Preserved Codex-only selection for fresh experimental runner starts. - Preserved all direct adapter execution and finalization paths. - Removed stale Pi provider-pack requirements that security review rejected. - Kept the rollout controls off by default. - Did not change pnpm-lock.yaml, Cargo, database migrations, or GitHub workflows. ## Verification - GitHub Actions will run the repository test, typecheck, build, security, and policy gates. - Focused tests cover ingress validation, redaction, execution targets, remote lifecycle, cancellation, resume, and legacy adapter selection. - Local tests were not run. The requested verification policy uses GitHub Actions for this series. - `git diff --check origin/master...HEAD` passes. - The diff contains 52 files. ## Risks - Remote execution crosses a trust boundary. - The implementation validates target capabilities, artifact digests, provider-pack pins, and connection metadata. - The feature remains default-off. - Fresh native selection remains Codex-only. - Existing direct adapters remain on the legacy path. - This PR does not yet make remote Codex runnable. The next PR adds the Rust WSS and TLS transport. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex with GPT-5.6. The work used high-reasoning agent mode, repository tools, GitHub tools, and parallel code-audit agents. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with Fixes: / Closes / Refs OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id - [ ] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

refactor(adapter-utils): replace the process-wide byte ledger with route-local byte bounds (#12465)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - The adapter layer carries sandbox requests to host processes. > - The HTTP/2 bridge used one process-wide byte ledger for all routes. > - One busy route could exhaust that shared budget and move another route to file transport. > - This pull request gives each host retention site a fixed byte bound and limits concurrent HTTP/2 streams. > - The benefit is local protection: one route cannot consume the byte budget of another route. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** The HTTP/2 bridge used one aggregate byte ledger for retained bytes across all routes. A busy route could exhaust the shared budget and force an unrelated route to use file transport. **Expected behavior** Each route should protect its own retained bytes. A reset on one HTTP/2 stream should cancel only that stream's host forward. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Start the HTTP/2 bridge with multiple sandbox routes. 2. Send enough retained data through one route to reach the aggregate byte limit. 3. Send a request through a sibling route. 4. Observe that the sibling route can fall back to file transport because the first route used the shared ledger. **Paperclip version or commit** `47639e227e78e3c5e0dd1a3c0e2d792fe86895a3` **Deployment mode** Built from source with the adapter-utils and server test suites. ## What Changed - Bound each host retention site with a fixed local byte limit. - Limited concurrent live HTTP/2 streams with one built-in stream limit. - Bound each host forward and response-body read to its own HTTP/2 stream lifetime. - Removed the process-wide byte ledger, its environment override, its metrics, and its file-transport fallbacks. - Added tests for the stream limit, host body budget, and sibling-stream cancellation. ## Verification - Run `pnpm vitest run --project adapter-utils`. - Confirm that 996 adapter-utils tests pass. - Confirm that `test_live_forward_work_never_passes_the_stream_limit` passes. - Confirm that `test_the_host_body_budget_matches_the_stream_limit` passes. - Confirm that the sibling-stream cancellation test passes. - Run `pnpm tsc --noEmit`. - Confirm that all pull request checks pass. ## Risks The bridge no longer uses a process-wide byte ledger. A local bound or stream limit that is too low can reject or delay valid work. The tests cover the new limits and stream cancellation behavior. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 Codex. Runtime model ID: GPT-5. The model used code execution and repository tools. The runtime does not expose the context window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(duplex): run the Daytona sandbox callback bridge over Node HTTP/2 (#12120)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Sandbox providers carry agent work through controlled execution channels > - The Daytona callback bridge uses a bespoke line-framed protocol over its duplex channel > - The bespoke protocol adds framing work and does not use the Node transport that already supports multiplexed streams > - This pull request carries raw bytes across the channel, adds a Node HTTP/2 bridge, and selects it for Daytona > - The benefit is one authenticated, multiplexed callback session with queue_v1 as the bounded fallback ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** The packages/plugins Daytona provider and the shared duplex execution path. **Problem or motivation** The Daytona callback bridge uses a bespoke line-framed protocol over the provider duplex channel. This adds protocol work and limits stream handling. **Proposed solution** Carry raw bytes through the cross-layer channel. Add an authenticated Node HTTP/2 host server and sandbox client gateway. Select http2_v1 for Daytona and retain queue_v1 as the fallback. **Alternatives considered** Keep the current duplex_v1 protocol. This keeps the bespoke framing path and does not provide one HTTP/2 session for callback streams. **Roadmap alignment** ROADMAP.md lists Daytona under cloud and sandbox agents. This change improves the shipped Daytona provider path. **Additional context** The branch adds no dependency. Node 24 provides the http2 module. The host token check and canonical path parser remain the single dispatch path. ## What Changed - Carry raw Uint8Array chunks through the adapter, plugin, worker, runtime, and Daytona layers. - Encode bytes as base64 only across the JSON-RPC hop, because JSON has no binary type. - Add the bounded host HTTP/2 server and the in-sandbox HTTP/2 client gateway. - Authenticate every stream with the per-run bridge token before route work. - Parse the path once and reuse the canonical result for route and forwarding work. - Select http2_v1 for Daytona and fall back once to queue_v1 when the client preface is absent. - Add transport, session, stream, and fallback telemetry. - Mark HTTP/2 as the preferred transport and queue_v1 as the soft-deprecated fallback. ## Verification - `npx vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src` — 990 passed and 4 skipped. - `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/plugin-worker-manager-duplex.test.ts` — 32 passed. - `npx vitest run --config packages/plugins/sandbox-providers/daytona/vitest.config.ts` — 220 passed and 6 skipped. - `npx tsc --noEmit` in `packages/adapter-utils`, `packages/shared`, `packages/plugins/sdk`, and `server` — clean. - No `package.json` or `pnpm-lock.yaml` file changed. - The live Daytona test skips when `DAYTONA_API_KEY` is absent. - The root `npx tsc --noEmit` command has a pre-existing missing `packages/adapters/droid-local` reference on this branch and on `master`. ## Risks - The transport change affects several duplex layers and could expose byte-boundary errors. - A missing HTTP/2 client preface falls back once to queue_v1 and records `preface_missing`. - The host token check and canonical path parser must remain on the shared dispatch path. - The live Daytona test needs `DAYTONA_API_KEY` and does not run in this agent sandbox. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5, tool-enabled coding agent with repository inspection, GitHub CLI, and shell execution. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

refactor: disambiguate the Telemetry and Observability data paths (#12128)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Paperclip records first-party events, OpenTelemetry data, and local run-log events > - The code and documents used one term for these three data paths > - This naming made the required review level unclear > - This pull request names each data path in the module names, documents, and code comments > - The benefit is a clear review rule without a runtime change ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Issue type** Unclear or confusing. **Where is the issue?** `packages/shared/src/telemetry/README.md`, `doc/observability.md`, `doc/run-log-events.md`, and the duplex instrumentation modules. **What's wrong?** The repository used Telemetry for first-party events, OpenTelemetry data, and local run-log events. This usage made the data path and review level unclear. **Suggested fix** Use Telemetry only for Paperclip first-party events. Use Observability for OpenTelemetry data. Use the run log for rows in `heartbeat_run_events`. Related public pull requests: #8476 and #9672. ## What Changed - Rename the duplex instrumentation modules and identifiers from `Telemetry` to `Observability`. - Move the Observability and run-log contracts out of the Telemetry README. - Add `doc/observability.md` and `doc/run-log-events.md` as the canonical documents. - Add a file-path review rule to `AGENTS.md`. - Correct the remaining code comments that name the wrong data path. - Keep all event names, payloads, database records, spans, configuration keys, environment variables, and runtime paths unchanged. ## Verification - `npx vitest run packages/shared/src/telemetry/readme-contract.test.ts` passes. - `npx vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/published-exports.test.ts` passes. - `npx vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/startup-timing.test.ts` passes with 42 tests. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils typecheck` passes. - `pnpm --filter server typecheck` passes. - The old module name does not remain in TypeScript or JSON files, except for the intentional publication guard. - CI and Greptile checks remain pending after PR creation. ## Risks - The old duplex module subpath no longer has a compatibility shim. The board accepted this intentional hard break. - The new duplex module subpath stays blocked from package publication. - The change has no runtime effect. The main risk is an incorrect document or module reference. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 Codex, exact model ID `gpt-5`, with tool use and code review support. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have described the issue in-PR with the documentation issue fields - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

refactor(environment): classify environment capabilities from static driver definitions (#12045)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Environment runtime drivers provide workspace, lease, and custom image behavior > - Runtime code used driver identity checks and several capability-specific members > - These checks spread capability rules across the runtime and made new drivers harder to verify > - This pull request adds one general capability classifier and one static driver support table > - The benefit is one fail-closed capability model that keeps current behavior and supports future drivers ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** Environment runtime capability checks for workspace realization, custom images, lease capabilities, and duplex authorization. **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting (multiple of the above) **Current behavior** The runtime selects several capability paths from driver identity and separate capability members. Custom image gates also trust provider declarations without checking every matching live worker method. **Proposed behavior** The runtime uses one general capability classifier and one static support table. Custom image gates require both the provider declaration and every matching live worker method. The public capability names remain unchanged. **Reason and benefit** The change keeps capability rules in one place. It removes identity conditions from runtime consumers and makes unsupported drivers fail closed. **Breaking changes** None. The public names sandboxCapabilities, sandboxProviders, and EffectiveSandboxCapabilities remain available. ## What Changed - Add classifyEnvironmentCapabilities and static support definitions for all four driver families. - Add resolveCapabilities to every environment runtime driver. - Move driver traits into environment-driver-traits.ts and migrate runtime consumers. - Require provider declarations and matching live worker methods for all custom image gates. - Migrate duplex authorization to the general resolver and remove the dead sandbox-only member. - Delete the unused resolveEffectiveSandboxCapabilities wrapper and update its test. ## Verification - pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck - pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/environment-capability-contract.test.ts server/src/__tests__/environment-runtime.test.ts — 92 tests pass - pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/environment-driver-traits.test.ts server/src/__tests__/general-capability-classifier.test.ts — 12 tests pass - pnpm exec vitest run server/src/__tests__/environment-custom-images-service.test.ts server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target-capabilities.test.ts server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target-duplex.test.ts server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target-duplex-kill-switch.test.ts — 66 tests pass ## Risks The main risk is a capability gate that denies a valid driver or permits an invalid driver. The static support matrix, live worker method checks, and regression tests reduce this risk. No database, public API, or published type name changes. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5, with tool use and code execution. The deployment does not provide a separate context-window value. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with Fixes: # / Closes # / Refs # OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub #NNN / github.com/paperclipai/paperclip URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (for example, docs/... or fix/...) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(duplex): bound aggregate duplex route resource consumption with a process-owned byte ledger (#12003)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip runs AI agents through adapters and sandboxed execution targets. > - Duplex routes retain bytes across route data, broker messages, decoder buffers, and readiness replay. > - Per-route limits bound each route but do not bound the total retained bytes across many routes. > - A process-owned ledger must charge each retained buffer before allocation and release the charge during cleanup. > - This pull request adds the aggregate ledger, connects it to host and sandbox duplex paths, and adds route coverage. > - The benefit is a fail-closed process-wide byte limit that keeps concurrent duplex work within a safe resource budget. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** This change affects packages/adapter-utils and server duplex orchestration. **Problem or motivation** Many routes can each stay below their per-route limits while their combined retained bytes exceed a safe process budget. **Proposed solution** Add a process-owned aggregate byte ledger. Charge route data, broker bytes, decoder buffers, and readiness replay bytes before allocation. Release each charge during cleanup. Use a separate sandbox_process decoder cap for the in-sandbox path. **Alternatives considered** Keep only per-route limits. This does not bound the combined process use. Set a fixed limit at one call site. This misses retained bytes in other duplex paths. **Roadmap alignment** This is a tightly scoped reliability and resource-safety improvement. It does not duplicate a roadmap feature. **Additional context** The aggregate ceiling uses a safe 256 MiB default. An invalid override falls back to that default and reports the rejected value. ## What Changed - Add a process-owned aggregate byte ledger for duplex route resource use. - Charge and release route data, broker forward and response bytes, decoder buffers, and readiness replay bytes. - Bound host-to-worker pending writes and standard input transport bytes. - Add a separate decoder cap for the sandbox_process path. - Make invalid aggregate-ceiling overrides fall back to the safe default without host startup failure. - Add adapter-utils and server tests for charging, release, rejection, cleanup, and many-route aggregate limits. ## Verification - pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils exec tsc --noEmit - pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit - Run the focused adapter-utils duplex ledger and execution-target tests. - Run the server aggregate-ledger route test. - Confirm all required pull request checks pass on this branch. ## Risks The ledger touches several duplex buffer paths. A missed release could reduce later capacity until process restart. The tests cover charge, release, rejection, cleanup, and route aggregation. The change uses a safe default when configuration input is invalid. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 Codex. The runtime model ID and context window are not exposed to this task. The model used tool calls, shell commands, and code review workflow support. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with Fixes/Closes/Refs OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub issue references) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(sandbox): add the duplex bridge broker, gated transport selection, and fixed observability (#11769)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Sandbox adapters provide controlled execution for untrusted provider environments. > - The sandbox channel needs one persistent duplex transport with strict host control. > - The transport must remain off unless the instance setting and provider capability both allow it. > - The host must detect loss, bound resource use, and expose only safe telemetry. > - This pull request adds the broker, gated selection, kill-switch wiring, fixed observability, and real-process proof. > - The benefit is safer sandbox execution with bounded failure behavior and inspectable transport results. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public issue exists for this change. The related pull requests are #11738 and #11750. **Problem or motivation** The sandbox duplex channel needs a host-controlled broker, strict transport gates, bounded provider input, and safe loss telemetry. Without these controls, a provider can cause replay, resource growth, unsafe endpoint selection, or data exposure through telemetry. **Proposed solution** Add a host broker with nested time limits, request limits, one-shot loss, and per-id deduplication. Select duplex transport only when the instance setting and provider capability both equal true. Assign the endpoint and nonce on the host. Reject invalid readiness data and use the file bridge on failure. Add fixed redacted telemetry and a real-process end-to-end test harness. **Alternatives considered** Keep the file bridge as the only transport. This avoids new channel behavior but does not provide persistent duplex operation for supported sandbox providers. **Roadmap alignment** This change supports the Cloud / Sandbox agents section in ROADMAP.md. ## What Changed - Add the duplex bridge broker with bounded forward, response, and gateway wait budgets. - Bound concurrent requests, lifetime requests, and request-id bytes before retention or forwarding. - Select duplex transport only when both required gates are true. - Assign the loopback port and nonce on the host and enforce a liveness-only READY frame. - Fall back to the file bridge after invalid readiness, contamination, bind failure, or timeout. - Carry the kill switch through the server, acpx engine, and six local adapters. - Add fixed, redacted duplex telemetry with a provider allowlist. - Add a real-process end-to-end harness for readiness, round trips, loss, and teardown. - Add regression coverage for limits, loss, UTF-8 splits, concurrency, and telemetry dimensions. ## Verification - Adapter-utils, server, and Daytona typechecks pass locally. - Adapter-utils tests pass, including the codec, broker, execution-target sandbox, and real-process harness. - Server kill-switch tests pass. - Live Daytona tests pass with the required provider key and skip without that key. - The root pnpm-lock.yaml file has no diff. - The branch contains ten commits after origin/master. ## Risks - Duplex transport remains disabled unless both gates equal true. - A provider remains an untrusted boundary and needs least-privilege credentials and quotas. - The server telemetry recorder stays deferred; the default recorder does nothing. - A provider that pre-binds the host port causes a fail-closed fallback to the file bridge. - The change adds no database migration and changes no root lockfile. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5, exact model family GPT-5, large context window, reasoning, and tool use. The model assisted with Git handoff validation and PR preparation. The implementation commits came from the engineering worktree. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with Fixes: # / Closes # / Refs # OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub #NNN / github.com/paperclipai/paperclip URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. docs/... or fix/...) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge - [x] I searched the GitHub PR list for similar PRs and confirmed this is not a duplicate --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(sandbox): add opt-in duplex command-stream foundation (capability, protocol, bounded host route, frame codec) (#11738)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip provides a control plane for companies that run AI agents. > - Sandboxed agents need a safe execution path for persistent command streams. > - The existing callback transport does not provide a bounded, generic duplex route. > - The host must control capability access, route identity, protocol limits, and close behavior. > - This pull request adds an opt-in duplex command-stream foundation across the sandbox layers. > - The feature stays inert because no current provider declares the capability. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting (multiple of the above) **Problem or motivation** Sandbox command execution needs a persistent host-to-sandbox stream. The current callback bridge uses a file transport and does not provide this generic route. **Proposed solution** Add a fail-closed provider capability, generic worker protocol messages, a host-owned bounded route, cross-layer service mediation, and a versioned newline-delimited frame codec. **Alternatives considered** Keep the file transport and add feature-specific commands. This does not provide one reusable duplex contract or host-owned route bounds. **Roadmap alignment** This work supports the completed Cloud / Sandbox agents roadmap area and the safe autonomy goal in the product definition. **Additional context** The change passed a two-stage security review. The final code review verdict was approve after fixes for active-stream bounds and service-layer capability mediation. ## What Changed - Add the opt-in `duplexCommandStream` provider capability with fail-closed narrowing. - Add duplex open, write, stop, and close requests and data and exit notifications to the plugin worker protocol. - Add a host-owned route with bounds for chunk size, cumulative bytes, lifetime, protocol errors, pending requests, and pre-bind buffering. - Add close acknowledgement handling with worker retirement when the close remains unconfirmed. - Wire `openDuplexChannel` through the execution target, runtime service, and plugin worker. - Add a versioned frame codec with shared wire-compatibility vectors and split UTF-8 handling. ## Verification - `server/src/__tests__/plugin-worker-manager-duplex.test.ts` passes 18 tests. - `server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target-duplex.test.ts` passes 11 tests. - `packages/adapter-utils/src/duplex-frame-codec.test.ts` passes 38 tests. - `server/src/__tests__/sandbox-capability-contract.test.ts` passes 15 tests. - Setup-token pseudo-terminal regression tests pass 47 tests. - Server TypeScript check passes. - Continuous integration will run the full required test, typecheck, build, and policy checks. ## Risks - Providers that opt into the capability must implement the complete worker protocol. - Route limit defaults can close a stream when a workload exceeds the configured bounds. - The capability remains disabled for current providers, so current production behavior does not change. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 (`gpt-5`), with tool use and code execution. The model reviewed and prepared this pull request from the supplied implementation and verification record. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs: #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: parallelize sandbox file-sync behind a provider opt-in capability (#11736)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip runs AI agents through local and remote execution adapters. > - Sandbox providers move workspace and asset files before and after agent runs. > - Serial file transfers delay startup and teardown when several operations do not depend on each other. > - Providers need an opt-in contract so existing providers keep their serial behavior. > - This pull request adds a bounded scheduler and routes inbound and outbound sync operations through it. > - The benefit is shorter sandbox setup and teardown with stable errors, clear telemetry, and a safe opt-in path. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting (multiple of the above): packages/shared, packages/adapter-utils, packages/plugins, and server. **Problem or motivation** Sandbox sync processes the workspace, assets, and referenced projects in series. This adds avoidable wait time to agent startup and teardown. **Proposed solution** Add a fail-closed provider capability named concurrentSyncOperations. Use a bounded scheduler with a limit of four operations. Preserve operation order for error reporting. Keep non-opted-in providers on the serial path. **Alternatives considered** Increase the serial transfer speed or add provider-specific schedulers. Those options do not provide one shared contract or stable behavior across providers. **Roadmap alignment** ROADMAP.md lists cloud and sandbox agents as a product area. This change improves sandbox execution without changing the control-plane contract. **Additional context** The Daytona provider opts in. Board trials on this commit showed overlap for inbound sync and outbound restore, with no referenced-project staging failures. ## What Changed - Add the concurrentSyncOperations sandbox capability and fail-closed parsing. - Add a bounded settle-all scheduler with stable input-order errors. - Parallelize inbound workspace, asset, and referenced-project sync operations when the provider opts in. - Parallelize outbound workspace and asset restore operations when the provider opts in. - Surface referenced-project failure text in run logs and server telemetry. - Add Daytona sync spans and the capability declaration. - Preserve in-flight upload scratch tarballs during workspace wipe. - Add unit and regression tests for the scheduler, coordinators, provider behavior, telemetry, and wipe race. ## Verification - Run the adapter-utils and server type checks. - Run the targeted adapter-utils, server, and Daytona test suites. - Run the full automated sweep. - Review six cold Daytona trials, with three serial and three parallel runs. - Confirm that parallel trials show inbound overlap and outbound restore overlap. - Confirm that providers without the capability keep serial behavior. ## Risks - Providers must opt in only when their file operations can run safely at the same time. - A provider that declares the capability incorrectly can expose transfer races. - The scheduler keeps a limit of four to bound resource use. - Providers without the capability keep the prior serial behavior. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 in the Codex runtime. The model used tool calls, code inspection, and GitHub workflow support. The model did not author the implementation commits. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with Fixes: # / Closes # / Refs # OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub #NNN / github.com/paperclipai/paperclip URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(sandbox): stream session output by capability, drop three operator flags (#11557)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Sandboxed agents use provider capabilities to select safe execution paths > - Session output still depends on three operator flags that duplicate capability data > - Duplicate flags can drift from the verified sandbox capability snapshot > - This pull request makes the capability snapshot the only streaming decision and removes the obsolete flags > - The benefit is default streaming with a poll fallback when a capability or stream fails ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What existing behavior does this improve?** ACP sandbox session-output streaming and sandbox execution configuration. **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting (multiple of the above): server/, packages/shared/, packages/adapter-utils/, and packages/plugins/. **Current behavior** Session-output streaming requires operator flags in the server and Daytona plugin configuration. Saved configurations can retain a removed key. **Proposed behavior** The verified capability snapshot selects streaming. The Daytona plugin uses persistent sessions by default, keeps bypass commands one-shot, and falls back from the log stream to polling. Removed configuration keys become inert. **Reason and benefit** One capability source prevents configuration drift. The fallback keeps output available when capability resolution or log streaming fails. **Breaking changes** The three operator flags no longer control session-output streaming. Existing saved keys load but have no effect. ## What Changed - Remove `useSessions` and `useLogStream` from the Daytona plugin configuration and manifest. - Remove `streamAgentSessionOutput` from server configuration, shared types, and execution-target plumbing. - Select streaming from `persistentProcessSessions` and `independentControlCommands`. - Keep poll fallback on capability resolution failure and stream failure. - Strip removed keys from strict fake-sandbox and catchall plugin configuration. - Update the sandbox capability documentation and focused tests. ## Verification - `tsc --noEmit` passed in `packages/shared`, `packages/adapter-utils`, `server`, and the Daytona plugin. - Daytona `plugin.test.ts` passed 139 tests. - Server capability, configuration, route, and runtime suites passed 160 tests. - `packages/adapter-utils` `execution-target-sandbox.test.ts` passed 44 tests. - The capability matrix covers stream, poll, and resolution-failure paths. - Removed-key tests cover strict fake-sandbox and catchall plugin schemas. ## Risks - A capability snapshot that lacks either required session capability uses polling. - A log stream failure uses polling and can increase request count. - Existing removed configuration keys no longer change behavior. - The isolated-worktree Daytona Vitest run has a pre-existing missing `packages/adapters/droid-local` reference. CI and standard checkouts use the committed configuration. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5, tool use and code review assistance. The exact runtime context window is managed by the Codex platform. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat: sandbox provider capability contract with fail-closed effective resolution (#11463)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Paperclip runs work through adapters and sandbox providers > - Providers need a clear contract so the server can use only verified capabilities > - A declared capability must not grant a method that the live worker did not verify > - This pull request adds manifest declarations and fail-closed effective capability resolution > - The benefit is safe provider reuse across execution targets and run lifecycles ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting (multiple of the above) **Problem or motivation** Sandbox providers expose different runtime methods. The server needs one safe capability contract that accounts for provider declarations, worker verification, and narrowing configuration. **Proposed solution** Add strict manifest validation for five sandbox capabilities. Resolve effective capabilities as the subset of verified, declared, and narrowed values. Store the result as a frozen execution-target snapshot. **Alternatives considered** Trusting the manifest alone could grant methods that the worker does not support. Trusting only a fixed built-in list would reject valid third-party providers. The intersection rule keeps the verified runtime ceiling and supports both provider types. **Roadmap alignment** This change supports the ACP run lifecycle track and the sandbox provider contract work in the current roadmap. **Additional context** The legacy `supportsReusableLeases` field remains supported. The nested capability validator rejects unknown keys. Missing or unavailable verification resolves all capabilities to `false`. ## What Changed - Add strict `sandboxCapabilities` manifest validation with legacy reusable-lease compatibility. - Carry declarations through the ready-driver projection. - Add fail-closed effective resolution from verified, declared, and narrowed capabilities. - Add narrowing for provider configuration, Kubernetes Job leases, and Daytona sessions. - Add a frozen read-only capability snapshot to execution targets. - Add focused tests and keep existing characterization baselines covered. - Add and update sandbox provider capability documentation. ## Verification - `npx vitest run packages/shared/src/validators/plugin.test.ts` - `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/plugin-environment-driver-sandbox-capabilities.test.ts` - `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/sandbox-capability-contract.test.ts` - `npx vitest run server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target-capabilities.test.ts` - `npx vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/startup-characterization.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/turn-characterization.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/settlement-characterization.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/composed-run-characterization.test.ts` - Package typechecks for shared, server, and adapter-utils pass. - Stage-2 security review suites pass with 28 tests. ## Risks The resolver fails closed when verification is absent or unavailable. Providers that rely on undeclared capabilities may see narrower behavior until they expose verified worker methods. The change does not alter the existing native-sync guard. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5, exact runtime model ID `gpt-5`, tool use and code execution. The implementation author used this model to assist with the change. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(acp): stream Daytona sandbox agent output and remove the host output poll (#11049)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app that manages AI agents for work > - Sandbox providers let agents run in remote and isolated environments > - Daytona session commands need a path that sends agent output to the host without host polling > - Host polling adds delay and repeats provider output work > - This pull request adds typed execute.log notifications and a log sink for incremental output > - This pull request adds an optional ACP session stream with final-result replay protection > - The benefit is lower output delay while the default flags keep current behavior unchanged ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting. The change spans the plugin SDK, Daytona provider, adapter utilities, and server execution services. **Problem or motivation** The Daytona ACP bridge polls a host output file while an agent command runs. This adds delay and can repeat work. The host also needs a safe route for provider output chunks. **Proposed solution** Add a typed `execute.log` notification with host-issued invocation correlation. Add an ordered log sink to the environment execute path. Add an optional ACP session-log path that parses newline-delimited JSON frames and removes the host output poll for that path. **Alternatives considered** Keep the output-file poll as the only path. This keeps the current behavior but does not provide timely output. The new path stays behind flags, so the existing path remains the default fallback. **Roadmap alignment** This change supports the shipped Cloud / Sandbox agents milestone in `ROADMAP.md`, including Daytona support. ## What Changed - Add the typed `execute.log` worker-to-host notification and company-scoped host route. - Add ordered `stdout` and `stderr` chunk delivery before the final execute result. - Add the Daytona session log sink and the optional ACP streamed session path. - Add monotonic frame handling so live and final output reach the host once. - Keep `useLogStream` and `streamAgentSessionOutput` off by default. - Add unit and integration coverage for the notification, execution target, runtime, and Daytona paths. ## Verification - Run adapter-utils tests: 445 tests pass locally. - Run server environment tests: 73 tests pass locally. - Run Daytona plugin tests: 131 tests pass locally. - Run TypeScript checks for shared, adapter-utils, and server. - Review the pull request checks after GitHub completes them. - All required GitHub checks pass on the current head. ## Risks The new paths change output delivery only when a feature flag enables them. The final execute result remains available for parsing and fallback. The main risk is a provider stream or frame-order error; the final-result parser limits that risk. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5, tool use and code execution. The runtime did not supply a context-window value. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes No operator documentation change applies because both new flags remain disabled by default. - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

refactor(observability): stop writing detailed per-step timing to the run log (#10776)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip tracks agent work for the team. > - The startup timing path already emits detailed spans. > - The run log repeats the same detailed timing. > - That makes the event larger than it needs to be. > - This pull request removes the redundant per-step timing fields from the run-log payload. > - The benefit is a smaller log with the same detail still available in traces. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue or open pull request matches this change. I described the enhancement below. **What existing behavior does this improve?** `run.startup.step` event output. **Subsystem affected** Cross-cutting (multiple of the above) **Current behavior** `run.startup.step` writes `roundTrips`, `providerExecMs`, `providerGetMs`, `createRuntimeMs`, and `ensureSessionMs`. The same detail already exists in the spans. **Proposed behavior** `run.startup.step` keeps only `step`, `durationMs`, and `outcome`. The heartbeat lifecycle timestamps stay unchanged. **Reason and benefit** This change removes redundant data from the run log. It keeps the useful detail in trace spans. It also makes the payload smaller and easier to read. The revert path stays clear because the removed data has one producer chain. **Breaking changes** Yes. Consumers that read the removed fields must switch to span data or the remaining event fields. The heartbeat lifecycle timestamps do not change. **Additional context** I searched GitHub for related open PRs and issues. I found no match. ## What Changed - Removed the redundant per-step timing fields from the run-log payload. - Removed the now-dead producer chain that fed those fields. - Kept the span-level timing data and the heartbeat lifecycle timestamps. ## Verification - `adapter-utils` typecheck clean - `server` typecheck clean - `startup-timing` suite: 30 passed - `adapter-utils` `execute` suite: 99 passed - `server` `environment-execution-target` suite: 21 passed ## Risks - Consumers that still read the removed fields will need a code change. - This is a one-way-door data removal for the run log. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5, tool use enabled. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs: #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(observability): add provider OTel spans - cache-hit flag, plugin tracer, Daytona pack/transfer spans (#10764)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip uses pull requests to ship control-plane changes with review and audit. > - This change extends sandbox provider telemetry. > - The first PR added startup and exec spans. > - This PR adds provider spans for cache hits, plugin tracer flow, and Daytona file sync steps. > - The host must keep the trust boundary and reject unsafe span data. > - The result is fuller OTel coverage with bounded labels and safe parentage. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **Problem or motivation** Sandbox provider telemetry lacks an explicit cache-hit signal, plugin span context, and file-sync pack and transfer spans. The current proxy for a cache hit is fragile. The plugin SDK also needs a safe tracer surface and a per-call parent context. **Proposed solution** Add an explicit `cacheHit` flag from the Daytona sandbox handle lookup. Expose `ctx.tracer` on the plugin context and pass a `traceparent` string with each call. Record provider spans on the host with allowlist clamping and capability checks. Wrap Daytona file sync pack and transfer steps in spans. **Alternatives considered** Keep the old `providerGetMs == 0` proxy. Reject that path because the cache-hit decision belongs at the handle lookup, not in a timing proxy. The host stays the trust boundary for worker span data. It clamps labels, rejects bad parent data, and gates the worker-to-host span RPC by capability. A security review completed before this PR opened. ## What Changed - Added an explicit `cacheHit` flag from the Daytona sandbox handle lookup. - Added `ctx.tracer` on the plugin context and a `traceparent` field in the per-call context. - Added host-side span recording with attribute clamping and capability checks. - Wrapped Daytona file sync pack and transfer steps in spans. - Added tests for the host trust boundary, the plugin tracer no-op path, and the Daytona span paths. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/plugin-daytona exec vitest run` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/plugin-sdk exec vitest run` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run plugin-host-services environment-execution-target instrumentation plugin-worker-manager` - `tsc --noEmit` for server, plugin-sdk, and adapter-utils ## Risks - Span data now crosses the worker boundary, so the host allowlist and capability gate must stay strict. - The `traceparent` path must stay valid and host-owned. - Daytona file sync spans must not add new round trips. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex, GPT-5, tool use. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used with version and capability details - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either linked existing issues with `Fixes:` / `Closes:` / `Refs:` or described the issue in the PR body - [x] I have not referenced internal or instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(observability): add granular OpenTelemetry spans for sandbox startup and execution (#10758)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip coordinates AI agent work and records execution data. > - The sandbox startup path and the host-to-sandbox execution path need clearer OpenTelemetry spans. > - The trace data now shows wait time, critical path data, and bounded labels. > - This pull request adds bounded spans and closed attribute helpers for sandbox startup and execution. > - The result is better trace data with low cardinality and no secret leakage. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description - No public GitHub issue exists for this branch. - Related PR: #10536 - This PR extends the sandbox OpenTelemetry work with exec spans, root timing, and bounded labels. ## What Changed - Added a closed span-attribute contract for sandbox startup data. - Added a bounded label helper for command and region values. - Threaded the active step context into the execution path. - Added a `sandbox.exec` span with true timestamps and bounded attributes. - Added skipped-step and root-span timing data with low-cardinality context. - Moved handshake sub-times and bridge batch data onto spans. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils run typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server run typecheck` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils exec vitest run` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run environment-execution-target` - `git log --oneline origin/master..origin/feat/sandbox-startup-otel-spans` - `git diff origin/master...origin/feat/sandbox-startup-otel-spans --stat` ## Risks - Span attribute rules could still miss a future field if new code skips the shared helper. - Low-cardinality labels may hide some detail, but that is the intended tradeoff. - Tracing stays fail-open, so a missing tracer still hides data rather than stopping work. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex, GPT-5, tool use enabled. The runtime did not expose the context window size. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge The current head still has one failing required check: `e2e`. feat: activate OpenTelemetry spans on the sandbox start path (#10536)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip moves agent work through sandboxed execution and control-plane services. > - The sandbox start path now has a no-op span seam. > - This change turns that seam on when OTLP export is configured. > - It keeps the default path unchanged when export is off. > - The result is structured startup traces with low-cardinality attributes and explicit parent links. > - The benefit is better observability without changing normal behavior. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this change. ### Problem The sandbox start path has a tracer seam, but it stays a no-op unless the OTLP export path is active. ### Proposed solution Enable the server tracer on sandbox bring-up, open a root span, parent each startup boundary to that root, and keep the export path opt-in behind `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT`. ### Alternatives considered - Keep the start path as a no-op. I rejected that path because it leaves sandbox start opaque when OTLP export is already configured. - Add broad attributes for commands and paths. I rejected that path because the span allowlist must stay low-cardinality. ### Roadmap alignment This follows the current OTel sandbox-start work and keeps the default path unchanged. ## What Changed - Add a root sandbox startup span and child spans for each named startup boundary. - Keep concurrent bridge spans parented to the root span. - Inject the server tracer through the adapter deps without OpenTelemetry imports in the engine. - Attach host-received provider duration attributes only when the values are finite. - Keep span attributes inside the allowlist and keep command, path, id, and error text out of span data. ## Verification - The pushed branch already passed `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils exec tsc --noEmit`. - The pushed branch already passed `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/acpx-engine/`. - The pushed branch already passed `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/environment-execution-target.test.ts src/__tests__/instrumentation.test.ts`. - The pushed branch already passed `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit`. ## Risks - OTel export changes trace volume when the endpoint is set. - The allowlist limits trace detail, so new fields need care. - The change stays no-op when OTLP export is off. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-5, tool use enabled. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used with capability details - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either linked existing issues or described the issue in-PR - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - The sandbox exec path starts agent commands and passes runtime options to the server and plugin layers > - This path kept a noProfile flag after the exec wrappers stopped sourcing a login profile > - The flag no longer changed behavior, so it left dead API surface in the protocol and runtime helpers > - This pull request removes that dead flag from the plugin protocol, the server drivers, and the managed-runtime helpers > - It also updates the tests and points the agent runtime README at the sandbox requirements file > - The benefit is a smaller and clearer exec-path contract with no behavior change ## Linked Issues or Issue Description - No public GitHub issue exists. ### What happened? The sandbox exec path kept a `noProfile` field after the exec wrappers stopped sourcing a login profile. ### Expected behavior The plugin protocol, server drivers, and managed-runtime helpers should not expose or forward a dead field. ### Steps to reproduce 1. Run a managed-runtime command through the sandbox exec path. 2. Inspect the protocol payload and runtime helper inputs. 3. Observe that `noProfile` is present even though it no longer changes behavior. ### Paperclip version or commit `60c7da86fc7a6c1dbf37bbcd86e25ecaaff01607` ### Deployment mode Built from source (pnpm dev / pnpm build) ### Additional context This pull request removes the dead field, updates the affected tests, and updates the README note for the sandbox profile path. ## What Changed - Removed noProfile from the plugin protocol and the server exec-path call sites. - Updated the managed-runtime helpers to use the narrower exec-path contract. - Updated the affected tests and added the README pointer to SANDBOX-REQUIREMENTS.md. ## Verification - `git grep -n "noProfile" -- packages/ server/` returns zero matches. - `tsc --noEmit` passed for `@paperclipai/adapter-utils`, `@paperclipai/plugin-sdk`, and `@paperclipai/server`. - `command-managed-runtime.test.ts` passed: 22/22. - `environment-runtime.test.ts` passed: 24/24. ## Risks - Low risk. The flag was already a no-op. - A hidden external caller may still send the removed field. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-5, tool-enabled. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

fix(server): gate sandbox/ssh execution targets by shared remote-managed adapter capability (#10459)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Paperclip can run an agent in a remote-managed environment, such as a sandbox provider or an SSH host. > - The server resolves an execution target for each run. The resolver kept its own hardcoded list of allowed adapters. > - The shared capability metadata in `packages/shared/src/environment-support.ts` already defines which adapters support remote-managed environments. The environment selector and the capabilities API use it. > - The two lists drifted. The UI offered sandbox environments to Grok Build (`grok_local`) agents, but the resolver refused them at run time. > - This pull request makes the resolver use the shared capability check for both the sandbox gate and the SSH gate. > - The benefit is one source of truth. The UI and the runtime now agree on which adapters can use remote-managed environments. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this bug. Inline description per the bug report template: **What happened?** A Grok Build (`grok_local`) agent was assigned a sandbox environment (a Daytona provider). The UI allowed the assignment. Every run and primary-model test then failed with the warning: `Adapter "grok_local" is not allowed in "<environment>" environments.` **Expected behavior** An adapter that the environment selector offers for a sandbox environment must also pass the runtime gate. The Grok Build run must start in the sandbox. **Steps to reproduce** 1. Create a sandbox environment (for example, with a Daytona provider plugin). 2. Create an agent that uses the `grok_local` adapter. 3. Set the agent's environment to the sandbox environment. The UI accepts this. 4. Run the agent, or run the primary-model test. The run fails with the adapter-not-allowed warning. **Paperclip version or commit** Reproduced on `master` at `0edb742f8d`. **Deployment mode** Local instance with a remote sandbox provider plugin. The same gate also applies to SSH environments. ## What Changed - `resolveEnvironmentExecutionTarget` in `server/src/services/environment-execution-target.ts` now gates the sandbox path with the shared `adapterSupportsRemoteManagedEnvironments()` helper. Before, it used a hardcoded six-adapter list that did not include `grok_local`. - The SSH path in the same file now uses the same shared helper. - New regression tests in `server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target.test.ts`: sandbox target resolution for every remote-managed adapter (including `grok_local`), SSH target resolution for `grok_local`, and the null path for an adapter without remote-managed support. ## Verification - Run `node_modules/.bin/vitest run server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target.test.ts`. All 10 tests pass, including the 3 new ones. - Confirm `grok_local` is in the `REMOTE_MANAGED_ADAPTERS` set in `packages/shared/src/environment-support.ts`. The resolver now reads the same set. - On a live local instance with this fix, a `grok_local` agent assigned to a Daytona sandbox environment no longer produces the adapter-not-allowed warning. ## Risks Low risk. The change routes two hardcoded checks through existing shared capability metadata. Behavior changes only where the lists had drifted: `grok_local`, and any future adapter added to the shared set, can now resolve sandbox and SSH execution targets. Adapters outside the shared set still return `null`. ## Model Used Claude Fable 5 (`claude-fable-5`) by Anthropic, with extended thinking and tool use, running in Claude Code. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

perf(plugin-daytona): opt-in no-profile fast path for default-PATH execs (#10352)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the control plane for autonomous AI companies > - The Daytona adapter turns tasks into shell commands and manages execution overhead > - Many short-lived exec calls still pay for login-shell profile sourcing even when the binary already resolves on the sandbox default PATH > - That extra startup work adds latency on the hot path for repeated command execution > - This pull request adds an opt-in fast path that skips profile sourcing only when the caller explicitly requests it and the command does not need shell initialization > - The benefit is lower per-call latency for eligible commands without changing the conservative default behavior for commands that need the profile ## Linked Issues or Issue Description This change does not reference a public GitHub issue. It follows the same Daytona startup-speed work as merged PR #10335 and narrows the execution path for eligible commands while keeping the default login-shell behavior intact. ## What Changed - Added an optional `noProfile` flag to `PluginEnvironmentExecuteParams`. - Refactored Daytona login-shell script assembly so the profile and nvm sourcing block is omitted only on the explicit fast path. - Preserved environment prefixing, `cd`, shell quoting, `NONINTERACTIVE_GIT_ENV`, stdin handling, and `durationMs` behavior on both paths. - Added regression tests for the fast path omission, the preserved execution parameters, and the default profile-sourcing path. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/sandbox-provider-daytona exec vitest run src/plugin.test.ts` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/plugin-sdk tsc --noEmit` - Reverted the guard locally to confirm the two behavior tests fail again, then restored the change. ## Risks - If a caller opts into `noProfile` for a command that depends on shell initialization, the command can fail to resolve its binary. - The API comment and opt-in design keep that risk narrow; the default path remains unchanged. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 (Codex tool-using coding agent) ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs: #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(adapter-utils): provider-delegable syncIn seam with ordered post-upload commands (#10340)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - The adapter/runtime layer has to move files into sandboxes safely and efficiently > - The current sync-in path needs a provider-delegable seam so providers can use their native upload transport when available > - The upload contract also needs ordered post-upload commands so extracted content can be finalized fail-fast after transfer > - The fallback path still has to preserve current behavior when the provider does not expose native sync verbs > - This pull request adds the contract and runtime seam for provider-delegable sync-in, plus the single-stream collapse flag > - The benefit is fewer round trips, a cleaner provider-owned upload path, and a compatible fallback for existing runners ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this change. The underlying feature request is described below in the repository's feature-request format. ### Problem or motivation Paperclip needs a sync-in path that lets each provider choose the best available upload transport instead of forcing the harness to orchestrate uploads the same way every time. The runtime also needs a way to describe ordered post-upload commands so providers can finalize extracted content fail-fast after transfer. ### Proposed solution Extend the sync contract with ordered post-upload commands, forward that contract through the plugin and environment runtime layers, and make client syncIn always available. When a provider advertises native sync verbs, the client should delegate to that transport; otherwise it should fall back to the existing tarball/write/extract behavior and then run the post-upload commands in order. ### Alternatives considered Keeping upload orchestration entirely host-side would avoid a contract change, but it would block provider-specific transport optimizations and keep the harness responsible for a path the provider can do more efficiently. A separate post-upload API would add another surface without improving the existing sync flow. ### Roadmap alignment This work aligns with the broader runtime and adapter roadmap because it improves provider integration without changing the external product model. It is an additive contract change that preserves backward compatibility for providers that do not expose native sync verbs. ### Additional context The fallback path still needs to preserve existing observable behavior, including command ordering, cwd confinement, and fail-fast execution. The single-stream progress flag is part of the same transport improvement so smaller writes can collapse to a single round trip when the runner supports it. ## What Changed - Added ordered `postUploadCommands` support to the sync operation contract and SDK mirror. - Plumbed the sync-in contract through the plugin and environment runtime layers. - Implemented a runtime client `syncIn` path that delegates to native provider transport when available, otherwise uses the generic tarball/write/extract fallback. - Preserved fail-fast execution of ordered post-upload commands in the fallback path. - Flipped the sandbox runner's single-stream stdin progress flag to collapse small `writeFile` operations to a single round trip. - Added and updated tests for contract forwarding, fallback behavior, cwd rejection, fail-fast behavior, and single-stream collapse. ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/plugin-sdk exec vitest run protocol.postupload.test.ts` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/plugin-sdk exec vitest run environment-sync-negotiation.test.ts` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils exec vitest run command-managed-runtime.test.ts` - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run environment-execution-target.test.ts` - Local typecheck and targeted suite runs reported in the handoff passed before PR creation. ## Risks - The new fallback path could diverge from the previous inline upload behavior if the tarball/extract contract changes. - Provider-native sync handling may expose provider-specific edge cases if a runner advertises sync verbs but does not fully honor the contract. - The single-stream flag changes transport behavior for small uploads, so regressions would likely show up as round-trip or upload failures. ## Model Used OpenAI Codex (GPT-5, tool-using coding agent). ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes: #` / `Refs: #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(acpx): per-step round-trip + provider-latency attribution for sandbox startup (#10222)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - Sandbox-backed runs need more precise startup observability so operators can see where time is spent before an adapter is invoked > - Aggregate startup timing hides which boundary is actually slow, especially in remote execution where the bottleneck can move between host round-trips, provider-boundary latency, and handshake phases > - This pull request keeps the existing startup timing channel additive while attributing the latency to the specific startup steps that caused it > - The benefit is better diagnosis of sandbox startup regressions without changing control flow or introducing a schema migration ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Refs: #10204 This PR extends the existing sandbox run-startup timing observability with per-step round-trip and provider-latency attribution for the Daytona startup path. It keeps the event payload additive and free-form, and it leaves the control flow, database schema, and external adapter interfaces unchanged. ## What Changed - Added per-step round-trip counting for the host-to-sandbox execute seam - Added provider-boundary duration accumulation for the Daytona execute and re-fetch steps - Split the ACP handshake timing into `createRuntimeMs` and `ensureSessionMs` while preserving the warm-handle skip - Kept the startup timing payload additive and did not add a schema migration ## Verification - `adapter-utils` acpx-engine and startup-timing suites: pass - Daytona plugin suite: pass with mocked SDK and injected-clock duration assertions - `server` environment-execution-target suite: pass - `tsc --noEmit` for adapter-utils and server: pass - Git validation: fetched `origin/feat/sandbox-start-step-timing-attribution`, confirmed it matches the authorized submit SHA `53c573266e618af05c57a0720aaa9d9e0452de61`, and confirmed the branch contains only the expected commit on top of `origin/master` - Searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs/issues; found one closely related merged PR and no open duplicate on this branch - Checked `ROADMAP.md`; the broad sandbox-agent roadmap section does not call out this specific startup-timing attribution work as a duplicate ## Risks - Low risk: the change is additive and only enriches existing timing data - Downstream consumers that assume aggregate-only startup timing may need to tolerate the additional per-step fields - The finer spawn/initialize/session split remains a follow-up in the external ACP client because that hook is not available here yet ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5, tool-using coding agent ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [ ] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Harold Kim <harold@paperclip.ing> Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(runtime): opt-in sandbox file-sync lifecycle hooks (API + provider docs) (#10013)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is an open-source AI-agent management platform; agents run tasks inside sandboxed environments (Daytona, Kubernetes, E2B, etc.) > - The control-plane ↔ sandbox file-transfer path flows through the `environmentExecute` seam in `protocol.ts` — the only verb available to plugins — which forces a base64-over-exec chunked loop for every file move: workspace files, assets, Codex home sync > - This transport is correct and safe, but it bypasses provider-native bulk/streaming APIs (Daytona `uploadFiles`, K8s `FastUploadInterceptor` / volume mounts), leaving significant throughput on the table for large workspaces > - The right fix is an opt-in seam extension: providers with faster native transfer declare two optional verbs; providers that do not opt in stay on the existing fallback with zero code or behavior change required > - This PR adds the first layer of that extension — two optional verbs (`environmentSyncIn` / `environmentSyncOut`) in the plugin SDK, the runtime plumbing to prefer the native path for the two clean destroy-then-replace cases, and a doc for the contract > - The core correctness invariant is byte-identical fallback: if no provider opts in, execution is exactly what ships today; `assertSyncOperationsConfined` enforces host-side path confinement for providers that do opt in > - No provider advertises the verbs yet → zero production behavior change; future PRs wire up Daytona and K8s providers against this contract ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this feature. Description follows the `feature_request` issue template: **Subsystem affected:** packages/plugins — plugin system; packages/adapter-utils — adapter runtime; server/ — EnvironmentRuntimeService **Problem or motivation:** Sandbox file transfers currently always use a base64-over-exec chunked loop regardless of what the underlying provider supports. For workspaces larger than a few MB this becomes the dominant wall-clock cost of every sandbox run, and it bypasses bulk/stream APIs that providers like Daytona already expose natively. **Proposed solution:** Add two optional, opt-in plugin hooks — `onEnvironmentSyncIn` / `onEnvironmentSyncOut` — to the plugin SDK. When a provider defines both hooks and both are advertised via the existing `supportedMethods` negotiation, the runtime prefers the native path for the two clean destroy-then-replace transfer cases; all other cases fall back to the existing byte-identical base64 transport. **Alternatives considered:** An unconditional verb would require every provider to implement or stub the verb. The opt-in / `METHOD_NOT_IMPLEMENTED` pattern (already used by `environmentExecute`) preserves backward compatibility with zero provider changes required. **Roadmap alignment:** Consistent with the ✅ "Cloud / Sandbox agents" and ✅ "Plugin system" milestones; extends the plugin seam rather than adding control-plane-level logic. **Additional context:** Searched open pull requests and issues for duplicate sandbox file-sync / native-transfer work; none found. ## What Changed - **`packages/plugins/sdk`** - `protocol.ts`: two new optional `HostToWorkerMethods` — `environmentSyncIn` / `environmentSyncOut` — plus generic `SyncOperation`, `SyncFileMapping`, and `SyncOutcome` types - `define-plugin.ts`: optional `onEnvironmentSyncIn` / `onEnvironmentSyncOut` fields on `PluginDefinition`; worker advertises each verb only when its hook is defined (else `METHOD_NOT_IMPLEMENTED`, mirroring `environmentExecute`) - `worker-rpc-host.ts`: route new verbs to plugin hooks - `index.ts`: re-export new public types - **`packages/adapter-utils`** - `command-managed-runtime.ts`: expose optional `syncIn` / `syncOut` on `CommandManagedRuntimeRunner` (available only when both verbs are advertised); add `assertSyncOperationsConfined` host-side path-confinement guard - `sandbox-managed-runtime.ts`: `SandboxManagedRuntimeClient` gains optional `syncIn` / `syncOut`; orchestrator prefers native path for default-provision asset inbound and workspace-download-into-fresh-dir outbound; all other paths keep the existing base64 fallback - `sandbox-file-sync.test.ts` (new): 234-line characterization suite — native-opt-in branch, fallback branch, `assertSyncOperationsConfined` escape-path rejection, `followSymlinks` → tar `-h` - `command-managed-runtime.test.ts`: negotiation + native-sync + confinement tests - **`server/src/services/environment-runtime.ts`**: `EnvironmentRuntimeService` delegates to `syncIn` / `syncOut`, gated on advertised support - **`server/src/services/environment-execution-target.ts`**: minor typing fix alongside the new verbs - **`doc/plugins/SANDBOX_FILE_SYNC_HOOKS.md`** (new): documents the full contract — opt-in / no-op guarantee, operation ordering, provider-may-tar, atomicity, `followSymlinks`, secret modes (0600, no window), path confinement, `operationId` opacity, resource bounds, shell-quoting ## Verification ```bash # SDK suite pnpm --filter packages/plugins/sdk test # Adapter-utils suite (includes new sandbox-file-sync characterization tests) pnpm --filter packages/adapter-utils test # Expected: 255 pass / 4 skip # Type-check across affected packages pnpm --filter packages/plugins/sdk typecheck pnpm --filter packages/adapter-utils typecheck # Server changed-file spot check: cd server && npx tsc --noEmit --skipLibCheck 2>&1 | grep -E "environment-(runtime|execution-target)" | head -20 ``` Key behavioral invariant to spot-check: with no provider opting in (the current state), run any sandbox task and confirm file-transfer behavior is byte-for-byte identical to what the pre-PR code produces. The characterization tests assert this at the unit level. ## Risks - **Zero production risk today**: no provider advertises `environmentSyncIn` / `environmentSyncOut`, so the new code paths are unreachable in production; all real traffic stays on the existing base64 fallback - **Path confinement**: `assertSyncOperationsConfined` rejects any `targetPath` that escapes the declared root — this is the primary security boundary for future providers. The test suite covers escape-path rejection - **Atomicity**: the contract delegates atomicity to providers; the doc explicitly calls out that directory-level ops are not guaranteed atomic - **Secret transport**: credential assets (e.g., Codex `auth.json`, directory mappings) continue to use the existing tar path — they do not go through the new verbs in any current provider > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. Make ACP the default engine for local adapters (#9238)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work. > - Adapter packages are the bridge between the control plane and local agent harnesses such as Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini CLI. > - ACP support was concentrated in a separate `acpx_local` adapter, which made ACP feel like a separate agent choice instead of an execution capability of the harness adapters. > - Claude, Codex, and Gemini now have ACP-capable harnesses, so the native adapter should own ACP selection, fallback, config, transcript parsing, and environment diagnostics. > - The standalone ACPX adapter still needs a compatibility path for existing rows, but it should not be offered as an active adapter for new agents. > - This pull request moves the shared ACP runtime into `@paperclipai/acpx-engine`, wires Claude/Codex/Gemini local adapters to prefer ACP when prerequisites are available, and retires `acpx_local` to a tombstone. > - The benefit is one adapter per harness, richer ACP transcripts by default where possible, and a migration path for existing Claude/Codex ACPX agents. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description Closes #5932 — the broken default `acpx_local` Claude path is replaced by native `claude_local` ACP support, existing Claude/Codex ACPX rows migrate to native adapters, and new agents no longer choose the standalone ACPX adapter. Refs #4893 — original merged ACPX local adapter runtime that this PR replaces with native per-harness ACP engines. Refs #6590 — prior ACPX-Claude seamlessness work folded into the new native Claude ACP path. Refs #197 — related open generic ACP/Kiro adapter work; this PR does not close it because Kiro/custom generic ACP remains a separate adapter decision. Refs #7018 — related Kimi-specific `acpx_local` shell failure; this PR retires the built-in standalone adapter but does not add a native Kimi adapter. Refs #8864 — related ACPX prompt/API guidance PR; this PR moves runtime guidance into the shared/native ACP engine path instead of the old standalone adapter. Refs #8881 — related `acpx_local` POSIX shell failure from the old `acpx` pin; this PR updates ACP dependencies but does not claim custom/OMP ACP support as a first-class native adapter. Refs #8964 — related open `acpx_local` stderr cleanup PR; this PR makes the old runtime path obsolete for new agents but keeps it as a non-closing reference. Problem description: - The standalone `acpx_local` adapter duplicates Claude/Codex agent choices that already have first-class local adapters. - ACP should be an execution engine capability of each harness adapter when the underlying harness supports ACP. - Existing `acpx_local` agents should either migrate to native harness adapters or fail with an explicit retirement message instead of silently falling back to the process adapter. ## What Changed - Added `@paperclipai/acpx-engine` as the shared ACP execution, session-codec, CLI formatter, and UI parser package. - Wired `claude_local`, `codex_local`, and `gemini_local` to auto-select ACP by default when prerequisites pass, with `engine=cli` opt-out and `engine=acp` strict mode. - Added ACP config schema/UI fields, environment checks, session-codec preservation, transcript parsing, and adapter capability metadata for the native adapters. - Retired `acpx_local` to a server tombstone, removed its UI/package/runtime image surface, and added a migration for existing Claude/Codex ACPX agents. - Updated package manifests, lockfile, release tooling, docs, Kubernetes sandbox defaults, and tests. ## Verification - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/acpx-engine typecheck` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-claude-local typecheck` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-codex-local typecheck` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-gemini-local typecheck` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/acpx-engine exec vitest run` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-claude-local exec vitest run src/server/acp.test.ts src/server/execute.acp-fallback.test.ts src/ui/build-config.test.ts` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-codex-local exec vitest run src/server/acp.test.ts src/ui/build-config.test.ts` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-gemini-local exec vitest run src/server/acp.test.ts src/ui/build-config.test.ts src/ui/parse-stdout.test.ts` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/plugin-sdk ensure-build-deps && corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec tsc --noEmit` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server exec vitest run src/__tests__/adapter-routes.test.ts src/__tests__/adapter-session-codecs.test.ts src/__tests__/adapter-models.test.ts` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` - `corepack pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui exec vitest run src/adapters/metadata.test.ts src/adapters/adapter-display-registry.test.ts src/components/AgentConfigForm.test.ts src/components/AgentConfigForm.render.test.tsx src/components/transcript/RunTranscriptView.test.tsx` - `node --test scripts/bootstrap-npm-package.test.mjs scripts/release-package-map.test.mjs scripts/verify-release-registry-state.test.mjs` Note: the server typecheck script calls `pnpm` internally; this dev shell exposes pnpm through Corepack only, so I ran the two script steps manually with `corepack pnpm`. ## Risks - Migration changes existing `acpx_local` Claude/Codex agents to native adapter types and clears old ACPX task sessions/runtime state. - Custom ACP commands remain on the retired tombstone and will need a separate future adapter/plugin path. - ACP auto-selection depends on local Node and ACP server command prerequisites; remote and unsupported environments fall back to CLI unless `engine=acp` is explicit. - `@paperclipai/acpx-engine` is a new public package and needs npm trusted-publishing bootstrap before release automation can publish it. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Improve live agent feedback during sandboxed runs (#8915)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - A core part of that experience is watching active agent runs without dropping into raw logs first > - Local and sandbox-backed adapters already record useful run output, progress, and tool activity > - But active issue threads could sit visually stale while the agent was syncing workspaces, tailing sandbox output, or emitting incremental tool-call updates > - Operators need timely, human-readable progress while preserving the raw transcript underneath > - This pull request streams sandbox run-log progress into runtime status, keeps visible issue threads refreshed, and folds repeated ACPX tool updates into stable transcript cards > - The benefit is that long-running agent work becomes easier to supervise without changing the task/comment control-plane model ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this exact change. Problem/motivation: - During long-running sandboxed agent work, the issue UI can appear idle even though the agent is actively syncing, running tools, or producing incremental output. - Operators need realtime feedback at the issue-thread layer, not only after opening raw logs or waiting for the final heartbeat result. - Related public context: #1808 previously added live-run status dots to Projects; #4362 touches heartbeat wakeup behavior but is not a duplicate of this runtime/UI feedback change. ## What Changed - Added sandbox run-log streaming support and defaulted sandbox-capable local adapters into the richer live-feedback path. - Surfaced environment/sandbox sync progress through heartbeat runtime status with bounded, redacted snippets. - Added live issue-thread cache patching so visible active runs update as progress events arrive. - Folded repeated ACPX `tool_call` updates into one transcript card instead of stacking duplicate cards. - Updated adapter docs and added focused regression coverage for sandbox log streaming, runtime status, ACPX parsing, live updates, transcript rendering, and issue chat messages. ## Verification - `pnpm install --frozen-lockfile` - `pnpm exec vitest run ui/src/context/LiveUpdatesProvider.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run server/src/services/heartbeat-run-runtime-status.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-runtime-state.test.ts ui/src/context/LiveUpdatesProvider.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/execution-target-sandbox.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/sandbox-managed-runtime.test.ts server/src/services/heartbeat-run-runtime-status.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-live-run-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/heartbeat-runtime-state.test.ts packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/ui/parse-stdout.test.ts ui/src/context/LiveUpdatesProvider.test.ts ui/src/components/transcript/RunTranscriptView.test.tsx ui/src/lib/issue-chat-messages.test.ts ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx` - GitHub PR workflow on head `8397953e7b41ccd42e5d9457ee7e4dfb996e4ec5`: `verify`, build, typecheck/release-registry, e2e, general shards, serialized server shards, and canary dry run passed. - Greptile Review on head `8397953e7b41ccd42e5d9457ee7e4dfb996e4ec5`: Confidence Score 5/5, no unresolved review threads. ## Risks - Live issue-thread cache patching could miss an edge case for a route shape not covered by tests. - Surfacing active-run snippets needs continued care around redaction; this PR keeps snippets bounded and adds redaction-focused coverage. - More frequent active-run UI refreshes could expose performance issues on very large issue threads, though updates are scoped to visible run/query caches. ## Model Used OpenAI GPT-5 via Codex, operating as a tool-enabled coding agent with shell, git, and repository-editing capabilities. Context window size is not exposed in this runtime. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [x] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

feat(adapter-utils): add observable sandbox sync progress (#8395)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the control plane for running AI-agent companies, so long-running remote work needs to stay observable to human operators. > - Cloud / sandbox agents are an active roadmap area, and their workspace sync path is part of the runtime substrate every remote coding run depends on. > - In the sandbox and SSH execution-target flows, Paperclip logged that sync had started, then often went silent for the full transfer window. > - That made large remote syncs feel stalled and also hid a real performance problem in the command-managed sandbox upload path. > - The first part of this pull request threads a throttled progress-reporting surface through the adapter execution-target stack so sync and restore work can emit meaningful updates. > - The second part fixes the command-managed sandbox transport itself: it removes the old serial 32KB append bottleneck, but also falls back away from the single-stream path when a provider-backed sandbox runner cannot surface mid-flight stdin progress. > - The result is that sandbox and SSH transfers are both faster and more observable, including the live Daytona-style sandbox case that previously only emitted `0%` and `100%`. ## Linked Issues or Issue Description No public GitHub issue exists for this bug, so it is described inline below following the bug report template. ### What happened - Remote sandbox and SSH workspace syncs could spend a long time transferring data while only logging a start line (`Syncing workspace and runtime assets to sandbox environment`) and, at best, a terminal line. - In the command-managed sandbox path, the original upload implementation also paid a large performance cost by appending base64 data in many small sequential remote writes (thousands of serial 32KB round-trips on a large workspace). - After the initial transport rewrite, live provider-backed sandbox runs still only emitted `0%` and `100%` because the single-stream stdin RPC buffered progress until completion. ### Expected behavior - Long-running sandbox and SSH syncs should periodically report how much of the transfer is complete (a percentage and/or MB transferred) so an operator can tell the run is healthy and making progress rather than stuck. - The main sandbox upload path should not be artificially slow. - A transfer that fails partway should leave an explicit failure marker in the log rather than a dangling intermediate percentage. ### Steps to reproduce 1. Run an agent against a sandbox (command-managed) or SSH (remote-managed) execution target with a non-trivial workspace. 2. Watch the run log during the workspace/runtime asset sync phase. 3. Observe that the log shows the sync start line and then stays silent for the full transfer (live provider-backed sandbox runs only show `0%` then `100%`). ### Paperclip version or commit - Branch `PAPA-825-provide-status-updates-when-syncing-sandboxes` off `master`. ### Deployment mode - Self-hosted / local instance using sandbox (command-managed) and SSH (remote-managed) execution targets, including provider-backed sandbox runners. ## What Changed - Added shared throttled runtime progress reporting and threaded `onProgress` through the adapter execution-target surface and adapter `execute.ts` entrypoints. - Added sync and restore progress reporting for the command-managed sandbox path and the SSH/remote-managed path, including git import/export progress where totals are known. - Reworked command-managed sandbox transfer behavior so uploads use the faster single-stream path when appropriate, but fall back to chunked progress-emitting writes when the runner cannot expose mid-stream stdin progress. - Marked provider-backed environment sandbox runners as not supporting single-stream stdin progress so live sandbox runs emit meaningful intermediate updates instead of only `0%` and `100%`. - Emit an explicit terminal failure marker (`failed at NN% (x/y MB)`) when an SSH/tar transfer rejects, so a failed sync no longer leaves a dangling intermediate percentage in the log. - Run the SSH sync/restore size estimate (local directory walk / remote `du` probe) concurrently with the transfer instead of awaiting it before opening the pipe, so progress instrumentation no longer adds startup latency proportional to workspace file count. - Added and extended focused regression coverage for runtime progress throttling and the new failure marker, command-managed sandbox transfers, sandbox orchestration, SSH transfer progress, and environment execution-target wiring. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/runtime-progress.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/ssh-fixture.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/command-managed-runtime.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/sandbox-managed-runtime.test.ts` - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapter-utils/src/command-managed-runtime.test.ts server/src/__tests__/environment-execution-target.test.ts` - `npx tsc --noEmit` for `packages/adapter-utils` ## Risks - The provider-backed sandbox fallback now prefers chunked command-managed writes when progress hooks are active, so small-to-medium uploads may trade some raw throughput for observable intermediate progress on runtimes that cannot surface true mid-stream stdin progress. - Progress percentages on tar-based transfers still depend on estimates in some cases, so operators may briefly see MB-only lines before the estimate resolves, then near-final clamping before the terminal `100%` line. - This PR changes shared execution-target behavior used by multiple adapters, so regressions would most likely appear in remote runtime setup/teardown flows rather than in a single adapter. ## Model Used - Initial implementation: OpenAI GPT-5.4 via Codex local agent (`codex_local`), high reasoning mode. - Observability follow-ups (failure marker, concurrent size estimate, added tests): Claude Opus 4.8 via Claude Code (`claude_local`). ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [ ] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [ ] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Fix exe.dev sandbox installs for gemini/opencode local adapters (#5737)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies, including running adapter CLIs inside remote sandboxes > - The QA matrix in PAPA-316 spins up local-runtime adapters (claude/gemini/opencode) against both SSH and the new exe.dev sandbox provider, and "Test" exercises the same install + probe path the real runtime uses > - On exe.dev the QA matrix failed at three different points: SSH/sandbox secret refs would not resolve, gemini-local could not find npm, and opencode-local installed a binary that was not on the probe-shell PATH > - These are all environment-shape issues the runtime should handle, not regressions in any individual adapter, so they need to be fixed in the shared install/resolve layer before the matrix can pass > - This pull request wires the environment id through to secret-ref resolution, bootstraps npm from a portable Node tarball when the sandbox image lacks Node, and symlinks the opencode binary into a directory that non-login shells see > - The benefit is that the QA matrix passes end-to-end on exe.dev, and any future sandbox provider that ships without Node or relies on rc-file PATH wiring gets the same fixes for free ## What Changed - `server/src/services/environment-execution-target.ts`: pass the environment `id` into `resolveEnvironmentDriverConfigForRuntime` for both the sandbox and SSH branches, so `privateKeySecretRef` / sandbox-provider secret refs (e.g. exe.dev `apiKey`) can resolve against the secret store at runtime instead of throwing `Runtime secret resolution requires an environment id`. - `packages/adapter-utils/src/sandbox-install-command.ts`: extend `buildSandboxNpmInstallCommand` with an `ENSURE_NPM_PREAMBLE` that, when `npm` is missing, downloads a portable Node v22 tarball into `$HOME/.local` and sets `PAPERCLIP_NPM_BOOTSTRAPPED=1` so the install step skips sudo (sudo's `secure_path` would lose the freshly-installed `npm` in `$HOME/.local/bin`). Distro-packaged Node from apt-get is intentionally avoided because it tends to be too old to parse modern JS syntax used by `@google/gemini-cli`. - `packages/adapters/gemini-local/src/index.ts`: switch the hardcoded `npm install -g @google/gemini-cli` to `buildSandboxNpmInstallCommand`, so gemini-local picks up the same sudo-aware + npm-bootstrap behavior as the other local adapters. - `packages/adapters/opencode-local/src/index.ts`: append a step to the install command that symlinks `$HOME/.opencode/bin/opencode` into `$HOME/.local/bin`. The upstream installer only adds `~/.opencode/bin` to PATH via `~/.bashrc`, which non-login `sh -c` probe invocations do not source. - `packages/adapter-utils/src/sandbox-install-command.test.ts`: cover the new preamble plus the unchanged root/sudo/user-prefix branches. ## Verification - `cd packages/adapter-utils && npm test -- sandbox-install-command` (passes; new "bootstraps npm from a portable Node tarball when missing" case is included). - Manual: ran the in-app `Test` action against the QA matrix dev instance for `QA exe.dev Claude`, `QA exe.dev Gemini`, and `QA exe.dev OpenCode` — all three now report `status=pass` including the hello probe. `QA SSH Claude` also passes; without the environment-id fix, SSH resolution threw before the wrapper / install fixes could run. - Suggested reviewer check: re-run the matrix on a fresh exe.dev environment and confirm the install step no longer hits `npm: command not found` for gemini and the opencode probe no longer hits `opencode: command not found`. ## Risks - Low/medium. The npm bootstrap pins Node `v22.11.0` from `nodejs.org/dist`; if that URL becomes unreachable the install will fail with a clear `curl` error rather than corrupting state. The bootstrap path is only taken when `npm` is genuinely missing, so existing sandbox images that ship with Node are unaffected. - The opencode symlink uses `ln -sf` into `$HOME/.local/bin`, which is created with `mkdir -p`; idempotent on re-install. - The `id` change is a strict additive: callers previously got `undefined` and only the secret-ref code paths actually read it. No behavior change for environments without secret refs. ## Model Used - Claude (Anthropic), `claude-opus-4-7`, with extended thinking and tool use enabled. Iterated through the Paperclip QA matrix harness; no other model assisted. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots (n/a — runtime/install path only) - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge --------- Co-authored-by: Paperclip <noreply@paperclip.ing> |

Migrate SSH environment callback to bridge (#5116)
> **Stacked PR (part 3 of 7).** Depends on: - PR #5114 - PR #5115 > Diff against `master` includes commits from earlier PRs in the stack — the new commit in this PR is the topmost one. ## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - Agents executing on a remote SSH-backed environment need a way to call back into > the Paperclip control plane (run events, log streaming, signals) > - When the SSH host can't reach the Paperclip host (NAT, firewalls, or simply not > on the same network), the run silently fails or hangs — a recurring class of > failure during SSH testing > - In sandboxed environments we already solved this with a callback bridge that > tunnels back through the existing connection; SSH was the odd one out > - This PR migrates SSH execution to use the same callback bridge, so every > adapter's remote run uses one consistent reverse-channel. Per-adapter SSH glue > is deleted in favour of a shared `CommandManagedRuntimeRunner` built from the > SSH spec > - The benefit is fewer SSH-specific failure modes, a smaller code surface, and > one place to evolve the callback contract going forward ## What Changed - Added `createSshCommandManagedRuntimeRunner` in `packages/adapter-utils/src/ssh.ts` that adapts an SSH spec into a generic command-managed-runtime runner (with cwd, env, and timeout handling) - Removed `paperclipApiUrl` from `SshRemoteExecutionSpec`; the bridge URL now flows through the shared runner - Reworked `execution-target.ts` to use the SSH runner alongside sandbox runners via a unified `CommandManagedRuntimeRunner` interface - Simplified `remote-managed-runtime.ts` and `sandbox-managed-runtime.ts` to consume the shared runner abstraction - Deleted per-adapter SSH callback wiring from claude-local, codex-local, cursor-local, gemini-local, opencode-local, pi-local execute.ts files - Removed `environment-runtime-driver-contract.test.ts` (the contract is now enforced by `environment-execution-target.test.ts`) - Added/updated `execute.remote.test.ts` cases for each adapter to cover the SSH runner path ## Verification - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils test` - `pnpm test -- execute.remote` (covers all six local adapters' SSH paths) - Manual QA: ran a claude-local agent against an SSH-backed environment, confirmed the agent successfully called back to `/api/agent-callback/*` endpoints during the run ## Risks - Refactor touches all six local adapters. If any adapter had subtle SSH-specific behaviour that wasn't captured in tests, it could regress. Mitigation: each adapter's `execute.remote.test.ts` was extended. - `paperclipApiUrl` removal from `SshRemoteExecutionSpec` is a breaking type change for any internal consumer. Verified no external plugins consume this type. - The new `CommandManagedRuntimeRunner` shape is a public surface in `@paperclipai/adapter-utils`; downstream plugins implementing custom runners may need updates, but no such plugins exist in this repo. ## Model Used - OpenAI GPT-5.4 (reasoning effort: high) via Codex CLI - Provider: OpenAI - Used to author the code changes in this PR ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots — N/A - [ ] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes — N/A - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

Let sandbox providers declare shell defaults (#5114)
## Thinking Path
> - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies
> - Agents execute in sandboxed remote environments served by pluggable
sandbox
> providers (E2B today, more later)
> - Today every sandbox command runs under `sh -lc` regardless of what
the
> provider's container actually ships
> - That misses bash-only shell init on E2B (which ships bash) and
prevents
> future providers from declaring a different default — there's no way
for a
> provider to say "I have bash, use it"
> - This PR adds a `shellCommand` field to sandbox execution targets so
providers
> can declare their preferred shell ("bash" for E2B), threads it through
the
> sandbox-managed-runtime client, callback bridge, and execution-target
shell
> helper, and validates the value at the lease-metadata boundary
> - The benefit is that sandbox commands run under the right shell on
the right
> provider, and adding new sandbox providers only needs to declare a
shell
> preference
## What Changed
- Added `packages/adapter-utils/src/sandbox-shell.ts` exporting
`preferredShellForSandbox(shellCommand)` (returns `"bash"` if input is
`"bash"`,
else `"sh"`)
- Added `shellCommand?: "bash" | "sh" | null` to
`AdapterSandboxExecutionTarget`
and `CommandManagedRuntimeSpec`; threaded it through
`runAdapterExecutionTargetShellCommand`,
`prepareAdapterExecutionTargetRuntime`,
and `startAdapterExecutionTargetPaperclipBridge`
- `createCommandManagedRuntimeClient`, `prepareCommandManagedRuntime`,
and
`createCommandManagedSandboxCallbackBridgeQueueClient` now take an
optional
`shellCommand` and use `preferredShellForSandbox` to pick the shell
- `startSandboxCallbackBridgeServer` accepts a `shellCommand` for its
server
startup, readiness probe, and stop hook
- E2B sandbox plugin declares `shellCommand: "bash"` in `leaseMetadata`
- `resolveEnvironmentExecutionTarget` reads `shellCommand` from lease
metadata
(validating against `"bash" | "sh" | null`)
- `environment-runtime.ts` adds `"shellCommand"` to
`INTERNAL_PLUGIN_SANDBOX_CONFIG_KEYS`
so the field round-trips through internal plugin config without leaking
to
external plugin metadata
- Updated tests in `command-managed-runtime.test.ts`,
`execution-target-sandbox.test.ts`, `sandbox-callback-bridge.test.ts`,
`environment-execution-target.test.ts`
## Verification
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-utils test`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server test --
environment-execution-target`
- `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/sandbox-providers-e2b test`
- Manual QA: boot a Paperclip instance, create an E2B-backed
environment, run a
claude_local agent against it, and confirm the run completes (verifies
bash
shell semantics flow through the callback bridge end-to-end)
## Risks
- E2B sandbox commands now run under `bash -lc` instead of `sh -lc`.
Bash is a
strict superset for the commands we issue (no busybox-only flags in our
shell
scripts), so risk is low. The shellCommand field is opt-in via lease
metadata —
providers that don't declare it stay on `sh`.
- New optional field on `CommandManagedRuntimeSpec` and
`AdapterSandboxExecutionTarget`.
Consumers ignoring the field retain previous behaviour (sh).
- Lease metadata now carries an additional field. Existing leases
without
`shellCommand` resolve to `null` and fall back to sh — backwards
compatible.

Add ACPX local adapter runtime (#4893)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI-agent companies through a control plane that can start, supervise, and recover agent runs. > - Local adapters are the bridge between Paperclip issues and concrete agent runtimes such as Claude, Codex, and other ACP-compatible tools. > - The roadmap calls out broader “bring your own agent” and claw-style agent support, and ACPX gives Paperclip one path to normalize multiple ACP agents behind a single adapter. > - The branch needed to become one reviewable PR against current `paperclipai/paperclip:master`, without carrying stale base conflicts or generated lockfile churn. > - This pull request adds an experimental built-in `acpx_local` adapter, integrates it through the server/CLI/UI adapter surfaces, and adds regression coverage for runtime execution, skill sync, stream parsing, diagnostics, and log redaction. > - The benefit is that Paperclip can run Claude/Codex/custom ACP agents through ACPX while keeping operator configuration, skills, logging, and transcript rendering inside the existing adapter model. ## What Changed - Added `@paperclipai/adapter-acpx-local` with server execution, config schema, ACPX session handling, CLI formatting, UI config helpers, and stdout parsing. - Registered `acpx_local` across CLI, server, shared constants, UI adapter metadata, adapter capabilities, and agent creation/editing surfaces. - Added ACPX runtime execution support with persistent sessions, local-agent JWT environment handling, skill snapshots, runtime skill materialization, and isolation/security regressions. - Added ACPX adapter diagnostics and marked the adapter experimental in the UI. - Added command/env secret redaction for resolved command metadata in adapter-utils, server event storage, and the Agent Detail invocation UI. - Added Storybook coverage for ACPX config, transcript rendering, and skill states, plus PR screenshots under `docs/pr-screenshots/pap-2944/`. - Rebased the branch onto current `public-gh/master`; `pnpm-lock.yaml` is intentionally not included and there are no migration/schema changes. ## Verification - `pnpm exec vitest run packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/server/execute.test.ts packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/server/test.test.ts packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/cli/format-event.test.ts packages/adapters/acpx-local/src/ui/parse-stdout.test.ts packages/adapter-utils/src/server-utils.test.ts server/src/__tests__/redaction.test.ts server/src/__tests__/acpx-local-execute.test.ts server/src/__tests__/acpx-local-skill-sync.test.ts server/src/__tests__/acpx-local-adapter-environment.test.ts server/src/__tests__/adapter-routes.test.ts server/src/__tests__/agent-skills-routes.test.ts ui/src/adapters/metadata.test.ts` — 12 files, 87 tests passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/adapter-acpx-local typecheck` — passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/server typecheck` — passed. - `pnpm --filter @paperclipai/ui typecheck` — passed. - Confirmed PR diff does not include `pnpm-lock.yaml`, database schema files, or migrations. Screenshots: ## Risks - Medium risk: this introduces a new built-in adapter package and touches runtime execution, adapter registration, agent config, skills, and transcript rendering. - ACPX and ACP agent behavior can vary by installed tool versions; the adapter is marked experimental to set operator expectations. - `pnpm-lock.yaml` is excluded per repository PR policy, so dependency lock refresh must be handled by the repo’s automation or maintainers. - No database migration risk: no schema or migration files changed. > For core feature work, check [`ROADMAP.md`](ROADMAP.md) first and discuss it in `#dev` before opening the PR. Feature PRs that overlap with planned core work may need to be redirected — check the roadmap first. See `CONTRIBUTING.md`. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex coding agent based on GPT-5, with repository tool use, shell execution, git operations, and local verification. Add sandbox callback bridge for remote environment API access (#4801)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies > - Agents can run inside sandboxed environments like E2B, which are isolated from the host network > - Sandboxed agents need to call back to the Paperclip API to report progress, post comments, and update issue status > - But sandbox environments cannot reach the Paperclip server directly because they run in isolated network namespaces > - This PR adds a callback bridge that proxies API requests from the sandbox to the Paperclip server, running as a local HTTP server on the host that forwards authenticated requests > - The bridge is started automatically when an adapter launches a sandbox execution, and torn down when the run completes > - The benefit is sandboxed agents can interact with the Paperclip API without requiring network-level access to the host, enabling E2B and similar providers to work end-to-end ## What Changed - Added `sandbox-callback-bridge.ts` in `packages/adapter-utils/` — a lightweight HTTP bridge server that accepts requests from sandbox environments and proxies them to the Paperclip API with authentication - Added request validation and security policy: the bridge only forwards requests to the configured API URL, validates content types, enforces size limits, and rejects non-API paths - Wired the bridge into all remote adapter execute paths (claude, codex, cursor, gemini, pi) — the bridge starts before the agent process and the bridge URL is passed via environment variables - Updated `environment-execution-target.ts` to prefer the explicit API URL from environment lease metadata for sandbox callback routing - Fixed Claude sandbox runtime setup to work with the bridge configuration - Added comprehensive test coverage for bridge request handling, policy enforcement, and sandbox execution integration - Fixed browser bundling — the bridge module is excluded from the frontend bundle via the adapter-utils index export ## Verification - `pnpm test` — all existing and new tests pass, including bridge unit tests and sandbox execution integration tests - `pnpm typecheck` — clean - Manual: configure an E2B environment, run an agent task, verify the agent can post comments and update issue status through the bridge ## Risks - Medium. This is a new network-facing component (HTTP server on localhost). The security policy restricts forwarding to the configured API URL only and validates all requests, but any proxy introduces attack surface. The bridge binds to localhost only and is scoped to the lifetime of a single agent run. ## Model Used Codex GPT 5.4 high via Paperclip. ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [ ] If this change affects the UI, I have included before/after screenshots - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge |

Add sandbox environment support (#4415)
## Thinking Path > - Paperclip orchestrates AI agents for zero-human companies. > - The environment/runtime layer decides where agent work executes and how the control plane reaches those runtimes. > - Today Paperclip can run locally and over SSH, but sandboxed execution needs a first-class environment model instead of one-off adapter behavior. > - We also want sandbox providers to be pluggable so the core does not hardcode every provider implementation. > - This branch adds the Sandbox environment path, the provider contract, and a deterministic fake provider plugin. > - That required synchronized changes across shared contracts, plugin SDK surfaces, server runtime orchestration, and the UI environment/workspace flows. > - The result is that sandbox execution becomes a core control-plane capability while keeping provider implementations extensible and testable. ## What Changed - Added sandbox runtime support to the environment execution path, including runtime URL discovery, sandbox execution targeting, orchestration, and heartbeat integration. - Added plugin-provider support for sandbox environments so providers can be supplied via plugins instead of hardcoded server logic. - Added the fake sandbox provider plugin with deterministic behavior suitable for local and automated testing. - Updated shared types, validators, plugin protocol definitions, and SDK helpers to carry sandbox provider and workspace-runtime contracts across package boundaries. - Updated server routes and services so companies can create sandbox environments, select them for work, and execute work through the sandbox runtime path. - Updated the UI environment and workspace surfaces to expose sandbox environment configuration and selection. - Added test coverage for sandbox runtime behavior, provider seams, environment route guards, orchestration, and the fake provider plugin. ## Verification - Ran locally before the final fixture-only scrub: - `pnpm -r typecheck` - `pnpm test:run` - `pnpm build` - Ran locally after the final scrub amend: - `pnpm vitest run server/src/__tests__/runtime-api.test.ts` - Reviewer spot checks: - create a sandbox environment backed by the fake provider plugin - run work through that environment - confirm sandbox provider execution does not inherit host secrets implicitly ## Risks - This touches shared contracts, plugin SDK plumbing, server runtime orchestration, and UI environment/workspace flows, so regressions would likely show up as cross-layer mismatches rather than isolated type errors. - Runtime URL discovery and sandbox callback selection are sensitive to host/bind configuration; if that logic is wrong, sandbox-backed callbacks may fail even when execution succeeds. - The fake provider plugin is intentionally deterministic and test-oriented; future providers may expose capability gaps that this branch does not yet cover. ## Model Used - OpenAI Codex coding agent on a GPT-5-class backend in the Paperclip/Codex harness. Exact backend model ID is not exposed in-session. Tool-assisted workflow with shell execution, file editing, git history inspection, and local test execution.
