From 5d9f6c56c2b325297c467005bf619da16dfd7a75 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Dotta <34892728+cryppadotta@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Thu, 5 Nov 2026 14:37:11 -0600 Subject: [PATCH] fix(ui): stop calling setup-draft agents "paused manually" (#19322) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit ## Thinking Path > - Paperclip is the open source app people use to manage AI agents for work > - The task chat shows a notice when the assigned agent is paused > - A new agent is stored as `status: "paused"` with `pauseReason: "setup"` while its setup runs > - The notice treated every pause reason except budget, import and system as a manual pause > - So a user who just created their first agent saw "It was paused manually." and a "Resume agent" button > - This pull request shows the real setup state and the correct recovery action > - The benefit is that new users do not think that they paused their agent by mistake ## Linked Issues or Issue Description **What happened?** During an onboarding test on a staging cloud workspace, the first agent showed a "paused manually" warning right after it was created. Work continued later. The agent activity log shows `agent.identity.created`, several `agent.updated` events while setup ran, then `agent.hire_created`. It shows no pause or resume event. The agent was never paused by an operator. It was a setup draft (`pauseReason: "setup"`). **Steps to reproduce** 1. Create a first agent in the onboarding flow. 2. Open the task that is assigned to the agent while the agent setup is not finished. 3. See " is paused. New runs will not start until the agent is resumed. It was paused manually." with a "Resume agent" button. **Expected behavior** The notice shows that the agent is still being set up. When the draft waits for the user, the notice links to the agent page to finish setup. A real pause keeps a clear "Resume agent" action. ## What Changed - `IssueAssigneePausedNotice` now handles `pauseReason: "setup"` separately. It shows " is still being set up." with an info tone. - While the lifecycle state is `preparing`, `verifying` or `pausing`, the notice says that runs start automatically when setup finishes. It shows no action. - When the setup draft is parked (`lifecycleState: "paused"`), the notice shows a "Finish setup" link to the agent page, where the existing "Finish setup" button lives. - The notice never offers "Resume agent" for a setup draft. - `company_archived` pauses now say "It was paused because its company is archived." They offer no resume, because restoring the company resumes these agents. - Only `pauseReason: "manual"` says "It was paused manually." An unknown or null reason shows no reason sentence. - Added tests for the setup-draft states and the company-archive pause. ## Verification Red, on current `master` code with the new tests (`cd ui && npx vitest run src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx -t IssueAssigneePausedNotice`): ``` × shows a setup-draft agent (preparing) as still being set up, not manually paused 35ms × shows a setup-draft agent (paused) as still being set up, not manually paused 11ms × explains a company-archive pause instead of calling it manual 12ms AssertionError: expected 'CEO is paused.New runs will not start…' not to contain 'paused manually' Tests 3 failed | 5 passed | 100 skipped (108) ``` Green, same command after the fix: ``` Tests 8 passed | 100 skipped (108) ``` Neighbouring suites (`npx vitest run src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx src/components/TaskChatThread.test.tsx`): ``` Test Files 2 passed (2) Tests 471 passed | 1 skipped (472) ``` - `node scripts/check-token-gates.mjs`: all gates clean. - `tsc --noEmit -p ui`: no errors in the changed files. The local run shows errors only from unbuilt workspace packages (`@paperclipai/plugin-sdk/ui` dist and the generated storybook feature map). CI builds these packages. - I did not run the full `pnpm -r typecheck` / `pnpm test:run` / `pnpm build`. CI runs them. ## Risks - Low risk. The change is UI-only and limited to one notice component. - A null or unknown pause reason no longer says "manually". It still says that the agent is paused and still offers "Resume agent". ## Model Used - Claude Opus 5.5 (`claude-opus-5-5`), Anthropic, via Claude Code with tool use (shell, file edits, browser inspection of the staging workspace). ## Checklist - [x] I have included a thinking path that traces from project context to this change - [x] I have specified the model used (with version and capability details) - [x] I have checked ROADMAP.md and confirmed this PR does not duplicate planned core work - [x] I have searched GitHub for duplicate or related PRs and linked them above - [x] I have either (a) linked existing issues with `Fixes: #` / `Closes #` / `Refs #` OR (b) described the issue in-PR following the relevant issue template - [x] I have not referenced internal/instance-local Paperclip issues or links (only public GitHub `#NNN` / `github.com/paperclipai/paperclip` URLs) - [x] My branch name describes the change (e.g. `docs/...`, `fix/...`) and contains no internal Paperclip ticket id or instance-derived details - [x] I have run tests locally and they pass - [x] I have added or updated tests where applicable - [x] I have updated relevant documentation to reflect my changes - [x] I have considered and documented any risks above - [ ] All Paperclip CI gates are green - [ ] Greptile is 5/5 with no open P2s, recommendations, or follow-ups - [x] I will address all Greptile and reviewer comments before requesting merge 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 --- ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx | 51 +++++++++++++++++++++ ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.tsx | 52 +++++++++++++++++++--- 2 files changed, 97 insertions(+), 6 deletions(-) diff --git a/ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx b/ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx index f84f183b765..9ffc0f4ba4c 100644 --- a/ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx +++ b/ui/src/components/IssueChatThread.test.tsx @@ -84,6 +84,11 @@ const { })); // The session lookup never answers on its own; tests set the account directly. +vi.mock("@/context/CompanyContext", async (importOriginal) => ({ + ...(await importOriginal()), + useCompany: () => ({ selectedCompany: null }), +})); + vi.mock("../api/auth", async (importOriginal) => { const actual = await importOriginal(); return { ...actual, authApi: { ...actual.authApi, getSession: () => new Promise(() => {}) } }; @@ -4468,6 +4473,52 @@ describe("IssueAssigneePausedNotice", () => { act(() => root.unmount()); }); + it.each([ + ["preparing", "computer is being prepared"], + ["verifying", "setup isn't finished"], + ["paused", "setup isn't finished"], + ])("shows a setup-draft agent (%s) as still being set up, not manually paused", (lifecycleState, detail) => { + const root = createRoot(container); + const agent = { ...pausedAgent("setup"), lifecycleState, urlKey: "ceo" } as unknown as Agent; + + act(() => { + root.render( + + + , + ); + }); + + const text = container.textContent ??
